It strikes you, as you make your way under the shadow of a sleeping apartment building, that you have another in (of sorts) on this situation you’ve found yourself tackling. Ms. Hardy works for Silvermane, right, like Tombstone? You can’t help but wonder if it might be worth stopping by her fine establishment, even if only very briefly. You doubt she’ll talk to you about anything remotely sensitive, but she doesn’t need to, does she? If there’s anything going on over there, all you really need to do is hang around a while, out of sight but not out of earshot.

Feels sorta wrong, spying on Ms. Hardy, but it’s a good idea. And you kinda want to know if Tombstone got out.

So, taking a moment to orientate yourself, you head off toward the riverside.

It doesn’t take you long to arrive at your destination. As usual, the place is like a fire in the night, its doors bathed in bright neon light. Something’s off, though, and you stop yourself on the opposite side of street – the doors are closed, and the queue that normally coils around the front of the club is nowhere to be seen. There’s a bouncer at the door but he’s looking even less hospitable than usual.

You feel your face fall into a frown.

You could ghost your way in, but, while a stray breeze could be held accountable for a door swinging abruptly open, you’re not sure it’s much of an explanation when the handle turns first. Still, there’s gotta be another way in – the place has a pretty big kitchen, right? Gotta have somewhere to throw out all that waste. Regulations an’ stuff.

Picking your way around the perimeter of the club, you eventually find what you’re fairly certain is the rear entrance – a big, nondescript slate of unmarked iron set into an alley round the back. Seems kinda familiar, too. Maybe you’ve scavenged for scraps back here before. Lord knows, after four years you’ve probably eaten from half the bins in the city.

There’s no doorknob, so you guess you normally have to knock to get in. Not an issue for you and your retard strength, of course – but that’s gonna leave a mark.

You guess it’s not really worth it. You’re not a fan of leaving your impression literally stamped in iron on someone’s door, even if there’s no logical way it could lead back to you. All these powers have made your position no less precarious, and you’re not keen on pushing your luck if you don’t have to.

Besides, you know something’s up, so Ms. Hardy must be at least connected enough to be in the loop regarding this whole thing.

Making your way out of the alley, you head home. Maybe you could stop by once the situation has settled somewhat, and getting in and out is a little easier.

The walk is a long one, but you’re not feeling up to flight – not after all the close-calls you’ve ducked under tonight. You feel like your luck should be just about at the end of its tether right now. One push, one spark, and everything comes tumbling down.

When you start seeing the Scar jut out through the light, a wall of total darkness against the pinpricks, you breathe an involuntary sigh of relief. You’re tired. Almost automatically, you check your watch.

On your way through the Scar, you notice something moving through the gloom. The moonlight is perilously thin tonight, but you can pick out the shapes of three distant figures and… a shopping trolley? Joyce has even inspired a character just with some beetle characteristics, wings and extra arms, add in.

As you approach, the figures gain definition, seeming to filter through into reality. It’s a bunch of young girls, probably around Laura’s age, give or take a year. Smell of rust and sweat hangs in the air, and old, stale cotton. So they’re not fresh on the street.

“Hey, hey, Sue!” One of them spots you, altering the others. ‘Sue’ (apparently) immediately darts around their trolley, positioning herself between you and it and puffing her chest out in an attempt to be as big and wall-like as possible.

She’s like 5’5”, though, so, yeah…

“Whaddya you want!?” She demands, her voice shrill. She’s swathed in a baggy, dark hoodie, tufts of pink hair just about evident under its hood. Her eyes are bright, like steel.

You raise your hands, falling back on the classic visual indicator of non-violence to stem the conversation’s current flow, and you plumb the back of your skull for words that won’t result in John James Green having to beat up a bunch of shoplifting tweens.

You can’t help but notice a little something about the girl at the back – blonde, frayed thing, thin like a rake and just as inappropriately dressed as her friend in yellow, her belly shirt (it’s winter, man), colourful bracelets, and assorted necklaces suggestive of nights spent raving round town with a head full of acid, not scavenging through a literal wasteland. Her eyes coast along the horizon, flickering back and forth between you and everything else, like she’s trying to pick something out of the dark.

“Look…” You hold your hands up even higher. Higher means nicer, right? “…It’s just me, alright? And I’m not here to take your stuff. I do pretty fine for myself.”

Comparatively speaking, of course.

The girl in front watches you a little longer, the steel in her eyes seeming to poke and prod at every facet of your demeanor, before finally opening her mouth:

“That’s enough, Jubes.” Says the girl in the hoodie, interrupting. She holds out her hand. “Susan Marko. My friends're Jubes and Kiden.”

You shake. Her palms are rough, like sand.

They look to one another.

It’s not that you don’t trust these three – it’s more that you don’t trust anyone. Paranoia isn’t paranoia when just over half the world really is out to get you, and if the last few weeks have taught you anything, it’s that you’ve generally been right to err on the side of caution.
