There’s silence, and you’re about to turn around to look at Dani when a weight hits your back and two arms wrap around your neck. You let out a “Oophf!” but manage to keep your feet. Dani is laughing in your right ear, hanging on while mostly between the space between your backpack and your right shoulder. You start laughing yourself and then you ask for her to get down a moment. She obliges, allowing you to lower your backpack and also motion for her to get on once more. She braces against your shoulders and hops on. This time you get a solid grip on her legs and can actually walk. You, uh, didn’t quite think how distracting it would be doing this, though. There is a bit too much “squishiness” rubbing into your back to really think straight.

“Well,” Dani begins, “I’m not completely sure what I want to do after this, yet. I know I would like to do something with Pokémon. Maybe be a Ranger. Maybe I could be a breeder or otherwise work with raising them somehow? What about you?”

You mull it over a bit. Research and science. Battling and hunting. Helping and exploring. There was a time you had even considered joining the Firefighting branch of the Rangers. So much, and only so much time to do it all. You had to work hard and fast.

You chuckle to yourself, and Dani asks “What’s so funny?”

“Well, it’s just that I’d like to try it all, honestly.”

“Hm? Try all of what, Grey?”

“I want to retire someday and maybe teach the next generation. Do some research and maybe even go for full research-credentials and doctorate. I want to help people, explore, find and help Pokémon. Maybe do a stint in the Ranger core? I want to try it all. My, uh, mentor, if you will, always said I was overly ambitious. He said I would have to work harder than everyone else to do half of those things. I told him I would do it. Then… then he would resume throwing rocks.” You laugh and Dani flinches. “Don’t worry, they weren’t too big.”

Dani hums a bit, rocking back and forth on your back. "Oh god," you think. "Stop pushing them against me like that, for'tha lov'a all that's holy!"

You cough and shift Dani backwards a bit before continuing. “Yeah, and I guess that I’d really like to go for at least the regional championship. I don’t have any… delusions about winning, necessarily, but I think. You know.” You shake your head a bit. Have to get over your nervousness talking to her, somehow.

You crane to the side to get a good look at Dani’s smiling face. She looks back at you, and you are reminded once more that you really enjoy watching her smile. “We’re doing pretty well, right?” She nods. “It’s nice being together so far.”

You can’t see the full extent of Dani’s smile so much as feel it. She lays her head against your shoulder and her arm, her breath tickling your ear. You laugh a bit with a shaking, shuddering flinch. When she speaks it tickles you more, and you urge her to stop. She doesn’t. Naturally.

“Hey, Grey?” Dani starts scooting backwards, and you lean with her. “Can you let me down real quick?” You oblige, and she slides off. You make to keep walking but she grabs your hand, and you stop. You look at her. Why is her face so red? She wasn’t the one with THOSE smooshed against her. An internal shiver runs through you just thinking about it.

“…Grey?” Her voice is quiet. Delicate. “Do you want to try again?”

You ave to resist popping your foot up, though. Your lips meet warmth. You feel that you are in a distant place. You're someone else. Nothing so soft, warm, and nice could ever happen to you.

Yet, it feels like home. Like you’re melting into a place that’s safe and kind, yet so very exciting.

As if by instinct you shift into her. One of your hands coming to rest on the small of her back and the other on her left cheek.

Not really. Actually? It’s kinda cute.

Erica’s tent has been flipped over. She's kicking, yelling, and clawing at the fabric surrounding her. She's clearly using Thrash, but is already confused. ("Good one, Grey!")

You can make out some of the details of her body pushing through the fabric. A hand here, a few toes there. Mossimer is next to the tent, claws working on the fabric and legs excitedly pumping up and down in frustration. Poor guy is trying to help her! Unfortunately, the mechanics of a zipper are lost on him. There’s also a third, and new, visitor to the camp:

A Joltik.

You see mottled fur on the end of a round abdomen, with several pairs of dark-colored legs, poking out from a large box of soup mix. Erica must have been making a snack and the Joltik smelt food? Next to you, Dani gives out a high-pitched “OOOooohhHHH!” of excitement and rushes over behind the little bug.

She takes out Vlad’s pokeball, releasing the bat with a flash of light. You….

You at least know now that the tent might not be Poke-Proof, but it’s definitely immune to whatever type Erica is. You kneel down beside her. “Erica, Erica! It’s okay. I’m here now. Just calm down.”

“Grey? Ohmigosh! THANK YOU!” Her thrashing stops, and you watch as the fabric of the tent rises and falls with her heavy breaths. “Saving me again… I’m so sorry… Iwashungry and Igotattacked and, and…”

“Shhh. It’s okay.” You fumble around, trying to find the zipper. “There! Got it.” You slowly pull it down and peel off various layers until Erica is back in the fresh air. She sits up quickly, wrapping you up in a hug. You pat her back and help her up. “You okay?”

She nods. “Yeah… Thanks. Sorry. Hey..." Erica looks around the campsite, worriedly. "Where’s Dani…?” You both turn, and Dani’s nowhere to be seen.

I’ve been sprinting through brush, over roots, and past trees desperately. This bug has a lot of energy – and he’s damned fast! “Ohhhh, but you’reSOcute! Aren’tyouuuu!” I can’t help but yell after the little yellow bug as it dodges, leaps, and jumps from tree to tree. I REALLY want to catch it. Thankfully, I have managed to keep up so far and Vlad is right on my heels.

He swoops at the Joltik and the wild ‘Mon leaves the treetops with a leap. My eyes follow its arc, and then the pieces of bark that go flying as it lands on a tree trunk and latches on. It’s just meters in front of me; there’s a sort of squeaking, gurgling cry as the Joltik rears back on its back pair of legs, waving its front legs about in a sort of menacing manner. Sparks fly between those waving little lightning-rods. Ah. Shit.

I jump to the side and land behind a large stump, throwing my hands over my neck. I can feel the hairs on my body stand on end and I smell a sort of chemical in the air. Ozone?

I jerk as the sharp “snap” of an electric discharge rings through the air. It’s like a small blast of lightning from the skies themselves. Only moments and then a searing pain lances up my leg, causing me to bite my lip, hard, as I try to draw my legs inward – but only one responds.

I cry out and roll over onto my back. “Fuhh-ck… FUCK!” My leg hurts so bad.

“Vlad… VLAD!” My voice is somewhat hoarse from screaming out in pain, and otherwise there’s not a lot of strength or focus to put towards speaking…. “NIGHT SHADE! NIGHT SHADE, VLAD!”

I pull my shirt up and stuff the hem of it into my mouth, gritting my teeth against the fabric as I pull open my pack. There's a lot of rummaging, but finally I find what I'm looking for: I pull the lightning rod in its compacted from my pack and draw it out. With a muffled “Mmph!” I shove it into the ground and attach the draw and release battery to it.

I look over to the fight ensuing. Vlad is hovering around the Joltik, which thankfully seems relatively woozy, and sending out tendrils of miasma and shooting off Night Shades. It's working, because the Joltik's actions are much more erratic. It still manages to shoot a few string shots and another blast of electricity at Vlad; one of the string shots sticks to the Gastly and this allows the lightning to follow the webbing like a guiding line.

I watch, heart in my throat, as Vlad ceases flapping and instead begins twitching slightly, dropping from the air.

“Vlad!” I reach out to him, wincing slightly from moving my leg. “No!” I feel so bad. I have to help!

The Joltik moves down the trunk, watching Vlad warily. I hurriedly pull out a potion and apply it to my leg. I look back up and Vlad has managed to begin moving again, batting his wings against the oversized bug. With some of the pain in my leg gone, I rise up and dump the pack out onto the ground. I limp over.

Slowly. Slowly. Quietly. Poor Vlad is getting nicked at by the Joltik, but thankfully his miasma has been pouring out in earnest. The Joltik repeatedly has to stop to rub at its eyes and mouth, which Vlad takes advantage with a good sinking of his teeth into its torso.

I ‘m just behind them. I lift the bag above the Joltik.

Before I continue with the story....

Grey, Dani, and Erica are currently in the Southern Shores Region, which is the Southeastern Region in the Greater Inter-regional Confederacy. There's also the Central Plains Region (Erica is from there), the Northeastern Region, etc. etc. 5 regions total.

There's a regional conference/tournament but also an inter-regional tournament / tour that happens at the end of that season's year. It's like going from regionals to nationals.

I think it would be pretty cool if someone else ran their own quest in a different region. The two PCs could meet in nationals or something. This isn't necessary or important but I wanted to share and also offer my blessings if anyone was considering running another Pokemon thread (not that you need my blessings... haha...)

You spend the next few minutes talking and laughing about wrestling. You didn’t quite notice at first, but you had mimed a flying-suplex move with Dani and afterwards your hands simply stayed linked together. You felt your heart beating faster.

I want you guys to understand that in a trainer battle - yeah, talonflame or fletchling, whatever, would wreck a scyther for the most part. The bird can basically just bait and bake. Just sit high in the sky and scorch the bug from above. That is how the type advantage really plays out - that, and, most flying types are natural predators of many bug types. I don't want it to play out as "magic." Bug types aren't very fire resistant, so they burn and dehydrate quickly. That's why they are "Weak" to fire.

HOWEVER,

Picture you are facing off against a wild scyther. Your talonflame is fine, yeah. But what about you? Just think on that.

Well it is bug/flying type. Left to me though my interpretation would be that whilst it's capable of flight it isn't able to reach the altitudes or sustain the duration anywhere close to regular bird pokemon.

I used the grasshopper example, but a praying mantis (which fits a scyther well) works too. They don't fly very well, but they can.

Also I'd love to run another Poke quest as I like DMing with my friends when we play random homebrews and I do like worldbuilding, writing, and all that other good /tg/ stuff...
but I'm rather new and unsure. It would be my first time starting a thread let alone running a quest on /tg/ so if I did end up doing it I'd probably need a lot of give from the players...

Herlad picked up a lot of followers pretty quickly, TG recognizes talented writing. The technical side is most set up thanks to the pokemon system and the work Herald had already done, just need to pick a dice system and run with it for bonuses and adjustments. Only thing I can say to typing speed is just keep practicing at it.

Depends on creature and how well it'd be balanced, most custom mons are either op HAXX that make legendaries look frail or more useless than a level 5 Ralts with no EVs. That being said I haven't played any of the monster hunters so I would not know offhand how'd they'd balance.
