“Yes I am Rin. Just wondering why they would have First and Second year students in this tournament.” you respond.

“That is because of what you did to Laura. The First year Doubles Tournament was pushed back so they decided to have both years in the pool.” Rin answers.

“Yeah, there is that. Still doesn't change the fact that the Second years would have an advantage over most of the first years. Not exactly sporting.” you reply now watching the match more intently.

“Well then, they would all have you to blame wouldn't they?” Rin says in a slightly teasing tone.

“I suppose you are right.” you reply, “Looks like the Second years are going to win. They knocked out one of their opponents.”

You say that as the screen in the locker room shows the footage of how the Uchiganes was knocked out. Followed by the now solo First Year Uchigane being surrounded. At least this match should be over quickly.

“They would be no match for us. We both have Personal IS' and a lot more experience than they do.” Rin says proudly.

“Never a smart thing to underestimate your opponent. And I did hear from one of our classmates, that there is someone with a personal unit that is a Second Year.” you reply.

“Yeah, I heard something like that. But with all of our practice, we should be able to beat one personal IS.” Rin says confidently.

Looking again at the screen, the Second year pair was victorious. Not much damage to the field, so the next match should come up quickly. After a short break, the next pairs are displayed.

The two of you quickly make it to the launch bay and are readying yourselves to deploy your IS'. Before you deploy the Maeve, you figure out what to say to Rin.

“Don't forget we are partners Rin. I have your back if anything happens.” you tell Rin directly.

“I know, partner.” Rin says smiling. “Let's go kick some ass.” Rin says with a mix of excitement and confidence.

You deploy your Maeve and Rin deploys her Shenlong. Launching out of the bay, you take up your starting positions. Across the field are two Uchiganes, both equipped with swords. You block out all the noise from the crowd in the stadium, you want to focus on the match.

“John, quick update.” Walken says over the comms, “Huang's support staff is also here but they opted to instead take a backseat at first. They don't want to crowd the channel.”

You hear Rin mumble something in Chinese, completely unable to make it out.

“I also want to emphasize this, both of you are Candidate Representatives so act accordingly. The eyes of the world are on the both of you.” Walken adds.

Great, more reason to tune out everything but the match out. A quick glance over at Rin shows the sentiment if shared between the two of you. OH CRAP, I completely forgot. Grandpa visited and I forgot to talk to Walken about it. I really should talk to him about that at a later time. While the comm line is secure, the receiving end isn't enough for your tastes. Focus on the task at hand, you can do that later.

Seeing as how Rin charged off, you should help her connect. As silly as melee is in what is essentially flying power armor. You give some power to your thrusters and move perpendicular to Rin's charge for an angle to attack. You deploy your Gram and fire at the Uchigane Rin is charging at. Your first burst connects and opens enough of a gap to let Rin get her first strike in. The second Uchigane must have performed a similar maneuver since you can't get a clear shot at her. You continue to circle around before you hear the report of enemy gun fire.

“John, the other girl has a shotgun!” Rin yells as she is forced to disengage.

Smart. Looks like they were able to customize their Uchiganes also. To what extent is unknown. As Rin is getting more distance, you see the second Uchigane and open fire with your Gram. The first burst connects but the second burst is partly deflected by the left armor wing pylon. Now with enough room, the first Uchigane switches out her sword for a rather heavy looking naginata and charges straight at Rin.

Rin is able to keep up with the naginata wielding Uchigane in melee combat but the second one is trying to rush in close and team up on her.

“Rin. Handle the girl with the naginata. I'll show the other girl how to really use a gun.” you tell her over comms.

“Got it. Just hurry up.” Rin yells back in between her strikes.

You begin pouring thrust out of your engines and fly past Rin and the girl she is in melee combat with. The shotgun Uchigane realizes what you are doing after you fire another burst a bit low to throw up dirt and impede her progress. She tries to return fire but you easily dodge past her fire. Without slowing down you begin to circle around her while keeping up your fire up. Those armor pylons can only protect a limited amount of area and with the lower speed of the Uchigane it should be easy flank her. Your speed lets you easily get behind her and you fire Gram at her flank. Several bursts connect with an unarmored area and she is thrown forward from the force.

“Naomi-chan, I need help here!” the shotgun wielding Uchigane pilot yells.

Your target tries flying forward to try and minimize the damage you have caused. A quick look over and you see the Uchigane Rin is engaged with break off by slamming the naginata into the ground. The dust cloud thrown up by the impact is used to obscure her retreat.

“Not so fast!” Rin yells as she powers through the dust cloud.

You switch vectors to keep up with your target while maintaining your firing lanes. Unfortunately at this rate the two of them will get close enough to cause problems for Rin if she reengages with who you assume is Naomi.

Seeing a new opportunity, you let your left hand let go of Gram and deploy your Razor into your now free hand.

“Rin, what are you doing? Open fire!” you command Rin over the comms.

“Ryuhou FIRE!” Rin yells as she opens fire with her Dragon cannons.

At the instant the naginata Uchigane is hit by Rin's fire, you open fire on both targets at the same time. Both Uchiganes are engulfed in a storm of metal and dust. After what seems like 15 seconds of continuous fire, your HUD indicates your Gram's magazine is empty. Rin takes this sign to stop firing. You try and peer further with your HUD to see if the two Uchiganes are still active. You did notice a prompt from Reinforce.

As the dust cloud slowly dissipates, the horn blows signifying the end the match.

“Match end. Team B victory.” the loud speakers of the stadium blare.

“What? That seems over too quickly.” you muse.

“What are you talking about John, we won.” Rin says enthusiastic at your win.

You quickly have your HUD display the target's shield status, both zero. That went quicker than you thought. Looking at the two Uchiganes, now that the dust cloud has dissipated, you see that they are both unable to move. Wanting to be a good sport, you gently fly the Maeve over to the closest Uchigane, the shotgun wielding one.

“Good match.” you tell her as you give her a hand out of the disabled Uchigane.

“Thanks.” she says as she takes your hand, “Was really scary to be on the receiving end.”

“Yes, but you fought on bravely in spite of that.” you complement, to who you presume is Aimi.

You see Rin take your lead and do the same for Naomi. Now letting the watching crowd in, you hear them cheering. It was quite a flashing ending. Now that you have helped both of them, the support crew takes care of the disabled Uchiganes as you leave the field.

“Good match you two.” you hear Walken say over the comms.

“Of course, it was going to be our victory.” Rin says, still high off the victory.

“Doesn't mean you have to boast about it.” you chide Rin.

“Oh what? An American not boasting? Color me surprised.” Rin teases you.

“Better than someone that falls flat whenever you copy someone.” you tease back.

“Youuuuu.” Rin says as she lightly punches you on the shoulder.

You both start laughing at the exchange. The walk back to the locker room was light hearted. You see Rin take a seat on a bench and drinks from the water she brought. You think on the next course of action.

I think both of those moves are not useable in this tournament. Fully deployed gram almost made the unmanned IS into small scrap metal and the move with the claymore Rin said that could have killed her.

Not wanting to tire yourself out early, you opt to relax and watch the matches. You take a seat next to Rin and watch the screen for the next match.

“Guess we caused a bigger mess this time.” you muse.

“Yeah but fixing the field shouldn't take that much time.” Rin replies.

“Guess you are right. Hear anything about the other person with a personal IS in the Tournament?” you ask as you relax on the bench.

“Nothing much. There was talk that she is one of the stronger students here.” Rin says after she thinks on it for a second.

“I don't want to go in blind. So I might as well watch the matches to see who she is.” you reply.

Soon enough, the break is over and the next match starts. Nothing that really jumps out at you. One of the Second Year girls was using a Rafele Revive while everyone else used an Uchigane. The next couple of matches was just a bunch of Uchiganes against other Uchiganes. One Raven did show up. You haven't seen anyone use it yet, as it was the American Second Gen IS. No new weapons appeared either, the girls would use a mix of standard weapons; assault rifles, shotguns, a grenade launcher. You and Rin would exchange commentary, just taking it easy the entire time. It wasn't until the last match before lunch that caught your attention.

“That must be her.” Rin points out.

On the screen is a second year using a a two-tone blue IS, partnered with another second year using an Uchigane. Their opponents, another pair of second years, using a Rafele Revive and an Uchigane. The screen announces the two teams as:

“I wonder what her IS' special ability is.” you wonder out loud.

You both stop commenting and watch closely. The match starts with the two-tone IS going against the Rafale Revive and the two Uchiganes against each other. You watch rather intently as the two-tone IS attacks, a rather oddly shaped lance seems to be her primary weapon against the Rafale Revive's SMG.

“Is that a water shield coming out of the lance?” you note.

“Looks like it. Would explain what those shielding skirts are made of.” Rin comments.

The fire from the SMG is completely ineffectual against the shield. The screen cuts away to the two Uchiganes. It is a showdown between two sword-women, one is pressing the attack while the other is trying to maintain her stance.

“I knew I saw her before, she is part of the Kendo club. I occasionally see her at the club on Sunday.” you say.

“She is on Team A, so she is the partner to the one using the personal IS.” Rin adds.

“So both are probably close combat focused. That could work for us.” you say as you begin thinking.

“What about that shield? It is stopping the bullets from the SMG pretty easily.” Rin asks.

“That is fine, as the both the Gram and Fragarch's darts have much better penetration values. Shame I didn't equip a rocket launcher as water isn't compressible. But if you pump enough energy into water, you get steam. That gives me an idea... “ you answer with a slightly devious smile at the end.

The next scene is the two-tone IS pointing finishing off an attack with her lance, disabling the Rafale Revive. The two-tone IS joins up with her partner and they begin a combined assault.

“What a flashy move.” Rin says watching the screen.

“A little to flashy.” you note, annoyed at such flare.

The match ends as the second Uchigane is disabled. Seems like there is going to be bit of a break for lunch and check ups on the IS'.

“So lunch time.” you say as you get up from your seat.

“Yeah. Wonder if today's special will be any good.” Rin replies.

Rin heads back to the Women's locker room to change while you change here. You change into the normal school uniform quickly enough but somehow Rin still beats you.

“That was rather quick of you.” you comment as you both head to the cafeteria.

“Didn't feel like changing so I just took off the leggings and threw on my uniform on top.” Rin replies.

“So you are only wearing the one piece underneath?” you ask.

“Ask any further and I'll punch you.” Rin replies in an angry embarrassed tone.

Guess she is. Must be convenient for a girl to do that. The cafeteria is jammed pack as you get in line. Everyone must be coming in due to the tournament. The wait was not terrible, but it could have been better. You grabbed a small soup and sandwich while Rin got a salad.

“All the tables are full.” Rin says as she looks around.

“Over there. I think I see Charlotte and Laura sitting down. There might be more seats with them.” you point out.

Rin and you quickly make it over to where Charlotte and Laura are sitting down. You didn't initially see them but Cecilia and Houki were also sitting at the same table.

“Hey.” you say to Charlotte as you take a seat next to her.

“Congratulations you two on your victory.” Charlotte says cheerfully.

You quickly finish your soup and chomp away at your sandwich before Laura says something that causes you to pause.

“Well, Cecilia took a nap on my bed. We did work a bit late and programming can be a boring to watch.” you answer.

“And that is all?” Laura continues to inquire.

“Eventually, I did have to wake her up and escort her to her room.” you add.

“Yes, that is what happened. See, nothing out of the ordinary happened.” Cecilia says in agreement, even if her face is blushing ever so slightly.

Laura stares at you for a bit before accepting your answer. She can be very sharp at times, she may have to sate her needs later. You quickly finish your sandwich, just as Rin finishes her salad. You were about to get up from your seat before Charlotte grabs you by your sleeve and pulls you close to whisper.

“Laura may be very trusting of you but I know better. I know how bold you can be, so don't forget I am here.” Charlotte whispers ever so sweetly in your ear.

“Good luck.” Cecilia says to the you and Rin as you get up from the table.

“John, Mayeda-sempai is a formidable opponent with her sword. So be careful if you engage her in combat.” Houki finally says.

“Thanks Houki. I'll keep that in mind.” you say, already up from your seat.

You and Rin head back to the stadium for the next part of the Doubles Tournament. You change back into your IS outfit.

“You done in there?” Rin asks as she just barely enters the locker room.

“Yeah.” you answer back, already finished changing.

“Good, I was worried you weren't done.” Rin replies.

“Worried you might see something you would enjoy?” you ask in an ever to teasing voice.

“Shut up, idiot.” Rin yells back, you could almost hear embarrassment in her voice.

Rin joins you, now having to wait for the next match. The screen bursts into life now that the second set of matches begins. The first match was a mirror match of one Rafale Revive and one Uchigane each. It was a balanced match before Team A made a small but critical mistake that allowed Team B to exploit and eventually win the match. A short break afterwords reveals the next match.

“That's our cue.” you say, getting up from your seat.

“This time, make sure to cover me better.” Rin tells you.

“I will, we are suppose to cover each others backs.” you reply.

The two of you make it to the Launch Bay without any delays. Activating Maeve and flying out to your starting point with Rin on your side happens with a bit of fanfare from the crowd. The two of you must be one of the favorites to win, naturally.

“No changes from before.” Walken says over comms.

“Roger that.” you reply.

Looking over at your opponents, you see one Raven and one Uchigane. If you remember correctly, the Raven was a predecessor to the Maeve. Both from Fairy Arms and Manufacturing. So it should be a good mix of speed and maneuverability but could be a bit troublesome to use, so they aren't used that much at the Academy. Once everyone is set at the starting positions, the countdown starts. After a long moment, the buzzer rings, starting the match. The Raven launches up in the air while Rin goes straight for the Uchigane. She really loves her charges.

Even if you started an instant later, your much better specs with the Maeve means you have already matched the Raven. The Raven tries to slow you down by opening fire with her assault rifle, to little effect. Up here, you are in control. Easily weaving in between her fire, your return fire is much more accurate scoring several solid hits with Gram.

The dog fight is easily in you favor as your turn rate and speed is more than a match for her. Even in the turning match, you were able to stay right behind her, keeping her squarely in your sights. Soon enough you are already on top of her and bearing down for a serious top attack before you notice a change in her attack pattern.

“Let's see you dodge this!” the Raven yells over the comms.

“Miho, that was suppose to be our ace!” the Uchigane pilot yells over the same open channel.

The change in the Raven's attack pattern was to deploy two multi-missile launcher. The resulting barrage of missiles coming straight at you is quite literally a massacre of missiles. And with you bearing on top of her, all the missiles have only one target, you.

Time to finish this little dog fight. You throw yourself towards the veritable storm of missiles, the first barrage effortlessly screams past you. The second barrage vectors towards you but not quick enough as you delicately move you body to let the missiles miss your body with less than a meter to spare. The following barrage, now locked onto you, rushes towards you with inhuman accuracy. Your next maneuver is a massive change in your vector. You pour all your thrust and AG fields into a vector perpendicular to the ground rocketing you to the left of the missiles. The fourth barrage correcting their vectors turns around to track you while the fifth barrage, just launched, tries and intercept you.

Only too late for the Raven as you switch out your Gram for the Caladbolg for the finishing attack. The instant you are in melee range, your strike along with the added velocity from your quick boosters cleaves through the Raven's right wing pylon followed by the sundering of the lower right leg thruster. You blast past the Raven with the resulting destruction behind you.

<The missiles are still active.> a prompt from Reinforce reads on your HUD.

Checking your sensors, shows that now all the missiles are tracking you even if the launcher was knocked out. You decide to instead keep on the full burn towards the ground.

“Get ready for this Reinforce. This is going to be close.” you tell Reinforce as the ground is looming ever so closer.

In an instant before you crash into the ground, you perform another hard maneuver forcing you to vector parallel to the ground without any loss of speed. As you zoom along the ground, you hear the explosion of the trailing missiles behind you crashing into the ground. A veritable trail of explosions marks out the path you take, just barely a meter above the ground. You cover the entire stadium field in less than 5 seconds forcing you back up into the air, this time at a easier angle.

As you bleed off speed from the climb, you turn around to get a view of the fight between the Rin and the Uchigane. Wanting to end the fight sooner, you switch back to your Gram and fire a burst into the Uchigane. The sudden surprise attack knocks the Uchigane off balance letting Rin get in the finishing blow. You see the Uchigane is disabled as the targeting data indicates its shields are at zero. A quick scan, shows that the Raven, now on the ground is also at zero shields.

The stadium's loud speakers blares the end of the match, “Match End. Team A Victory.”

Even up here in the sky, you can hear the crowd roaring at your victory.

You can clearly hear it until Rin tells you over comms, “Show off.”
