You shovel down your breakfast, basking in the warm, fulfilled sort of glow it plants in your stomach. You wish you could just fall right back down onto your sleeping bag and coil up into yourself, leaving the day to pass in a contented haze, but you have business to attend to. And you kinda want to see Laura, too.

Informing the others that you’re off to get that cash money money, you head out into the cold. You wince as you emerge into the Scar, your eyes taking a moment to adjust to the clear, open immensity of the sky. Only clouds are wisps today, so no snow, at least not till later. The wind is pretty brutal, though.

Sniffing the air, you disentangle the scents of Laura and Lucas from the flow, their sweat and blood and familiar, old clothes charting out a course for you.

You don’t have to walk far, and you hear them before you see them. They’re standing amidst a line of debris a short ways away, overlooking the busted-out school building you were considering as a home when you first entered the Scar. They’re breathing heavily – well, Lucas is. As you approach, he takes a broad swing at her, and she bends around it like a gust of wind, her heel arcing around to swat him straight off his feet. You feel yourself tense up as he hits the ground.

Laura breathes in deeply, and her eyes turn toward you. You wave.

“Hey!” You glance down at Lucas. “Getting some exercise in?”

Laura nods slowly.

You can’t help but notice that she’s not wearing any shoes. Her tiny feet stand, utterly exposed, on the rubble-flecked snow.

“You want me to carry you or something?” Her stare burns through all these little flickers of disparate emotion, like one of those old animation reels where one moment seems subtly disjointed from the next. She’s quizzical, she’s surprised, she’s strangely harried, and then she’s considering it. “I know how much that hurts.”

She look down at her feet, and you add, an idea coming to you that you could take her flying.

Her fingers grip her pockets. You’re about to retract your offer, fearing you’ve said something wrong somehow, but then she speaks up:

“Your wings extend out of your arms, correct?” You nod. “That seems dangerous.”

Ah. Okay.

She studies the ground a moment longer, fingers moving awkwardly through the fabric of her jeans. And then she looks up at you, and her eyes are bright and green in a way that seems utterly new to you, like you just met her yesterday.

“I will ride on your back.”

You swallow very slightly, and smile, leaning forward a bit to accommodate for her tiny-ness.

“Hop on.”

Her touch is strange. Her fingertips brush tentatively at your arms, and then withdraw quickly, as though repulsed by some electrical quality of your skin. Eventually, she manages to coil her fingers around your shoulders, and you lift her up, catching her legs. You feel the breath quiver in her chest, her warmth undulating against yours, and she moves almost like a machine when she loops her arms down over your shoulders, her muscles straining awkwardly against one another. She breathes in long, bulbous streams, almost as though she’s tired.

“You okay?”

She is silent for a moment, but eventually she nods. You feel her cheek come to rest against your shoulder blade, soft and warm.

“Your back feels strange.” She notes.

You trudge through the snow, her weight slowly accommodating itself to you. It’s gradual, changing in measurements of minuteness, but eventually you begin to feel the tension leaving her frame, seeming to roll off her muscles and bleed into you as heat. You take it slow, allowing yourself some time to regard your surroundings.

On your way towards the edge of the Scar, you notice a great, vertical tear on one of the nearby apartment blocks. A bunch of tents have been set up in its shadow, and you can feel the heat of a flame burning even from several dozen yards away.

You wonder how many of them are mutants. That girl yesterday said she was a ‘regular freak’, whatever that means.

Laura’s breath tickles the base of your neck. It’s strange – it sticks to you, like a halo, buzzing through your brain. You feel warm.

“Wanna get some new boots on the way?” You ask. “Yours are pretty scuffed up.”

Laura shifts. She breaths against your back in silence for a moment, before uttering a small, quiet “Yes.”

Yeah, that’d be a good idea. Her boots have these great big holes in the front, like she tried to play that knife game from Alien with her toes.

You breach the walls of the Scar, and, to your surprise, nobody on the streets pays any mind to you. You guess they’re all too wrapped up in their own stuff to care about what that pale chick on the dude’s back has no shoes on in this crappy weather.
