“Oni-chan.” Your voice doesn't seem to get through to him. “Hauko-san. HAUKO!” Your shout finally draws him out of his misery, and he looks at you with near-human eyes, despite his physical transformation. It seems like a good sign, though you can't really be sure. There's just too much weird crap associated with Barrier Combat to be certain.

“I'm not going to seal you away. Or kill you. But you have to do two things for me.” He bows his head, kneeling. “First, you will give me your word that you will reveal none of my secrets, nor harm me or mine until I have achieved my destiny.” You didn't want to add that last part, but you couldn't help it. Kami-stuff, it has to be. He kowtows to you, and that's as good as him giving you his word. “Second....go to Hinata-hakase.” Hauko looks up at you, stunned.

You take a deep breath. “Go to Hinata-hakase, and take vows with her. Let her heal you, teach you, and make you well, like she is doing with Kushinada.” His confusion is write large upon his face, and you frown at him. “Promise you will do it. Promise you'll let her help you.”

When he speaks his voice is cracked and harsh, as it his throat is raw from screaming or crying, though he didn't really do much of either. “I swear, Ryuu Ryukusa.” He slowly rises, his body shrinking, bright and natural looking flames jetting from his wounds, his mouth and ears. The transformation takes only a moment, and he carefully wraps his wounds. Or tries, he's shaking a lot (and smoking but that's normal). That gut-wound is the worst of it though, and he'll survive it.

You take a deep breath, and take a swath of white silk out of ~Nowhere~, then walk over to him. You don't speak, and neither does he, but he lifts his arms, and allows you to wrap the makeshift bandage about his waist, taping his ribs and binding the through and through stab wound. “If I tell them where you are, they can help you heal this.” His dark eyes come up, and you can see he's confused. “You girlfriend and boyfriend. If they're with you, you'll heal faster. But I won't tell them, if you don't want me to. My promise before still stands. I have a healer among my family.” A couple, actually, but you don't need to let him know that.

He nods slowly. “Tell them...tell them later. They're not going to appreciate any of this.” You consider. It explains why your cousin, despite his bullying ways and dislike of you, never once complained about you liking lilies.

“That's not necessarily true. They might surprise you.” You know your family has. They don't deserve what you are putting them through, but they have stayed by you. Stood up for you, in a couple of cases. Er Yin....you have no idea how Kiku-chan is going to take this. “Is there any way to help Wakaba?”

He shakes his head. “It's not something that can be undone easily. It's not even like possession, it's more like....more like metal poisoning. Once it's there, it has to come out naturally or it doesn't come out at all.” Well, you'll have to see about that. Er Yin would know best....maybe Kiku-chan can help....kamidamnit, you're just not going to get away from this.

As you finish the bandage, you murmur, “I'll make an offering for you, later. When I'm home.” you don't remind him of his promise – he can't forget them, the power of the spirit-world, the nature of Shinto and the kami will enforce his promises.

He nods and turns away slowly moving towards the far edge of the Barrier as you walk over to the two wounded spirit-children. Despite their injuries, you can carry both without too much trouble, and you can get them home, but you can't get there in a Barrier. You didn't make it that big. You kneel and check their injuries, which are relatively severe, even for spirit children. The neck break is clean, though. Akari-niji-chan was always good at such things. Shoko-san....well, if Yui-niji-chan was brutal, than what Shoko did was downright barbaric.

A rush of wind announces the arrival of a cloud and Yui and Akari hop off. “Aniki!” You stagger under the massive weight of a three-hundred pound hug. Akari smiles faintly, and walks the short distance over, checking the concussed Void dragonette's eyes. Yui squeezes harder and you find yourself at odds with needing to breath and the sheer comfort of her warm hug.

You hug your herald tightly, tight enough that she makes a contented, happy noise, though it hurts a lot. Akari is suddenly by your side, patting Yui-niji-chan's shoulder, and you let go, as Akari takes your right arm carefully and begins to strip away the sodden silk of the jacket. You reach up and gently take hold of Yui's horn though, before she can panic over the seeming injury she caused (she only made it bleed a little more freely – this was all that Stone bastard's fault). You pull her close – rather, she lets you pull her close, and you kiss her, softly and deeply, thoroughly letting her know how precious she is to you.

This also has the side effect of distracting her as Akari-niji-chan quickly wraps a swath of dark silk along your right arm. She wears black for the same reason – blood doesn't show easily. Not that you were bleeding much, but you had other things on your mind.

Letting go of your dazed cloud-rider, you get to the less important things. “You two shouldn't be here; is there a problem with Kiki-hime?”

Yui-niji-chan shakes her head. “The princess told Kiku-san to go put a seal on the dope that the police were after, and she did it, and everything was cool.” She nods, even though you're frowning. “And Kiki-hime said 'if Ryukuza says she shouldn't of done it, you tell her that I'm the princess and I told her so she did it because I said so.' But really, I waited with my taiko sticks and a cloud just in case, but nothing happened.” You can't help but smile wryly, and Akari glances at you, laughter in her dark eyes.

“All right. Then how are Shoko-san and Er Yin-sensei?” Yui-niji-chan looks serious at that.

Her left arm is burned down to bone in two places, and her left upper chest is scorched into the muscle. Her breast is fine, but she's not going to have very much arm mobility, and that's after she heals completely. It might not ever heal completely. The fire that caused that wasn't just Shen, there was definitely some power in it, like it was alive.” Yui shakes her head, and you can see she's trying not to get upset.

Jing infused fire? That would explain why even as potent as it was your own nature still countered it completely.

“I can't do much more than make the scarring not too bad, and make her comfortable. Jinyuu-sensei said she'll keep her under a seal until I get back.” Yui-niji-chan lowers her head, and goes to her knees before you, trembling slightly. “I'm sorry, aniki.” Akari lays a gentle hand on her lover's back, and looks at you, her eyes knowing, and all too calm. You both knew this could happen, but Yui-niji-chan isn't from Clan Ryo.

We have the option of the Wishing Rock, going to see the youkai priestess, and seeing the oni priestess of Izanami. Of these three, I would prefer the Wishing Rock: better to use it now than continue to hold onto it, wondering if there's an even bigger event that we should save it for (fucking Final Fantasy Elixirs). The oni priestess is my second option, as she's nice and a cute, but it involves treating with Izanami, which is something that should always be reconsidered.

Hinata is the least favorite of the options, but that's because I don't really like or trust her, so there's definite bias.

You gently lift Yui-niji-chan's chin, making her look up at you. Your Water eyes can see how she's not afraid of you punishing her, and that makes your heart warmer. Time was she might have been terrified of that. But her inability to do more doesn't just upset her for Er Yin's sake; she wants to be better, to be able to help you more, and in that, she feels she's failed unforgivably....even as she knows you'll not only forgive her, but praise her for all that she did do well.

You close your Water eyes and sigh softly, smiling grimly. “No, Yui-niji-chan. You didn't fail me in any way, and you know that, deep inside. If there is any fault, it's mine for not intervening sooner. There was no way we could have known what happened, but it's my responsibility as your aniki to have kept it from happening.”

Akari-niji-chan places a hand on your shoulder as well. “Aniki, none of us could have known that. Yuuhi-san and Er Yin-sensei chose a bad fight, but together they kept Hauko from escaping and from allowing the triplets to complete the spell. That was why they were here, and they succeeded.” It hurts, but she's right.

Not that you care that she's right, but.... “We'll fix this, Yui-niji-chan, Akari-niji-chan. Even if we have to take her to Hinata-hakase we'll take care of her.” You close your eyes, and feel Yui-chan take your hand and place it against her cheek, trying to comfort ~you~. You can't help but smile, and you can feel the uncertain smile from Yui's cheek against the back of your hand. But it is of Akari you ask the worst question. “How is Kiku-chan taking it, Akari-niji-chan?”

You refrain from muttering 'you got that right' and open your eyes to watch Yui-niji-chan study the Void dragonette carefully. Akari speaks softly, now that Yui-chan is occupied. Akari totally planned that, but that's why she's your harbinger. “She's taking it hard, but she's Clan, aniki. She's not blaming anyone for it, but her heart is hurt badly. Kiku-chan can still do her duty....”

“But?”

“Aniki, even I can see that Er yin-sensei is more than a lover to her. As much as she loves you, as much as she worships you, Er Yin is her precious treasure, and that treasure has been broken, perhaps forever.” A dreadful idea comes to mind, a risky, dangerous plan. But it might be worth it for everyone involved. A way for Yui to be able to reach the goal she sets so insanely high for herself.

You just have to convince her lover that using the Wish Granting Jewel on Yui would work. It would work – unlike the Monkey's Paw legend or the djinni-wishes, it is a sacred and holy gem, and it doesn't truly grant wishes, as much as it grants enlightenment and understanding. You know enough of the legends to know that much. But it would destroy the jewel forever.

But that's not the real problem. The real problem is that Yui is your best friend's lover, and would say yes to you in a heartbeat. You'll be damned before you let Yui make that choice without Akari's say so.

Both the priestesses will demand something huge as price. But Hinata is Kiku's friend, and I am pretty sure this would influence the price. The other priestess require us to go in Yomi again, and she may outright refuse. On the other hand, that may have wonderous results: I don't know what damage Er Yin's soul took over the centuries, but we could potentially heal her anew.

Then, you have the whish jewel, which apparently work by bringing out the full potential of people and events, and in doing so force someone in a very delicate posistion. I don't want to impose it on Yui.

On the other hand, we could just use it as offering.

It IS a good idea, maybe the best possible idea, but there might be other options. She kisses your hands gently, and you are concerned more by the fact that you feel very little than the expected pain. “My most magnificent mistress, moved me momentously.” She lets go of your hands, smiling, while Yui is watching you, trustful and observant and somewhat bemused.

“You're weird, aniki.” Well, honest at least.

“Tell your mistress I'll be more careful next time, Yui-niji-chan. I promise.” Akari-niji-chan acknowledges the spirit of what you mean, and you relax, realizing she's not trying to make you uncomfortable or upset, only worried about you. That makes you feel better, strangely enough. “Let's get out of here. Time may not pass quickly here, but I'm not enjoying the feeling of it passing without knowing how they are for myself. And anyways, she grabbed my hands first, Yui-niji-chan, so it's not my fault.” Yui is blushing, and Akari is once more smiling faintly, placid and calm. You bring down the Barrier as they collect the unconscious prisoners. “And be careful with them, I promised we'd be good to them.”

You pull both your ands close to your chest and Akari-niji-chan steps between you and the figure that stepped out of the....sudden daytime Tokyo fog? It feels like Shoko's doing, it's got that salt-water taste and that tepid warmth to it. It was a good idea, you should have thought of it sooner. On the other hand, pain is distracting.

So is the exceedingly cute nogitsune-born girl standing in front of you.

She's shorter than Yuuhi AND Kiku, which is an impressive feat. She's wearing a simple red kimono with miko-style sleeves and black shorts and stockings, along with actual one-plank geta, which means she's even shorter than you thought she was. Lifting both hands, she makes fox-signs at you, and looks up at you with one glowing red eye. She could pass for Yuuhi-chan's little sister.

There are three more around you, but they're staying out of sight in the fog, and they're not particularly aggressive – their blood is cool and calm, and not in the manner of a killer's calm. You would know.

You gently brush Akari's tail with yours, tracing signs to let her know how many and where the others are, noting that one is moving in your direction from the front, calmly and slowly. The tiny youkai-born takes to clacking steps back, and then lifts one foot, balancing on the single geta easily as she lowers her hands and entirely hides them in her sleeves. Akari steps aside for you, and carefully sets down her burden, kneeling next to you and Yui as you place your hands behind your back.

That's mostly so you don't scare the little girl, because your fingers and palms are scorched down to glistening ruby and sapphire talons and bones with bare shreds of charred flesh clinging to them.

You kneel and smile at the the tiny nogitsune-girl, who blinks her wide yes at you. “I'd hug you but I'd probably get you kimono totally messy, cutie. Can you tell me your name?” She shakes her head rapidly back and forth, and hops, switching from one foot to the other. “Did you feel like you had to come fine me though?” She nods just as rapidly. “you know you shouldn't scare strange people coming out of barriers, right?”

She looks down at you though horn rimmed glasses, and bows slightly. “There are a few more of us nearby, but you'll excuse us for being cautious, I hope. As you said, it is dangerous to scare people when they are emerging from a Barrier.” The little one cranes her head to look up at the woman, and then looks down, hands behind her back, and kicks one geta against the sidewalk, scuffing the wood. 'Don't do that, Peta-chan, you'll break it.” The girl looks up again and then switches feet, much to the older nogitsune-born woman's consternation.

“My name is Reiha. We felt your presence but couldn't enter the barrier.” You stand up and bow, as does she, noticeably more deeply than you're expecting of a stranger.

This is my best friend Ryuu Akari, and my....” You and Reiha both blink at the sight of Yui sitting cross legged next to the unconscious Wood oni-child and playing jan-ken-pon, except that Peta seems to keep trying to add the fox-head gesture instead of rock, paper, or scissors.

“....my messenger and part time baby-sitter Ryuu Yui.” Reiha smiles and looks at Akari-niji-chan somewhat nervously, while Akari placidly watches her lover play with the little fox-girl. “I didn't think there would be so many nogitsune-born here in Tokyo, Reiha-sama.” Her alarm is understandable – most people would have assumed they were kitsune, as you might have before you met Yuuhi-chan. “Is there something I could perhaps do for you?”

You close your Water Eyes, as she seems to be a basically honest person in a bad situation, and they are nothing if not predictable. “Do you know anything about Clan Ryo, Reiha-sama? As you can see, they're not exactly a simple sort of clan.” Yui, despite your disclaimer, is playing cat's cradle with Peta, who keeps getting her little and pointer fingers tangled in the cradle since she won't put them down when taking the cradle from Yui. Reiha nods, looking down, her tail lashing once. “All right. Then, why don't you and Peta join my family in our home, and we can discuss it at length there. I have the feeling I can guess what the problem might be though....”

Rie's cat youkai needing a home, a whole clan of nogitsune youkai-born showing up, and Rie hot on their tails? Coincidence doesn't stretch that far. “Yui-niji-chan.” She hops to her feet instantly. “Can you carry Peta-san and Reiha-sama on your cloud? Peta-san doesn't seem like she'd be too big.”

“I can do that, aniki, you may rely on me!”

“I always will. Akari and I will be there shortly, have Shoko and Er Yin-sensei both in the same room., and do what you can for them. Tell Yuuhi-chan I'll want to speak with her too.” You bow, and Reiha, looking relieved, bows as well. She scoops up Peta, and Yui-niji-chan makes a cloud for them....and then hesitates, looking at you.

“Aniki, I won't be able to....” Akari -niji-chan shakes her head minutely and Yui-niji-chan nods to you.

“They carry little 't' shaped pieces of gold and silver.” Kami, why do people make things difficult for you? Of course, it all makes sense. “I thought it would be helpful to you to have some people who could help you so I helped you.”

“Thank you very much, Rie-sama....” She drops the body unceremoniously onto your porch....wait, when the heaven did you get to the porch? Especially your BACK porch!? “Domo arigatou gozimasu!” Akari is blinking, and looks about as dumbfounded as you've ever seen her. Rie looks at you flatly, then hops onto the railing – as a cat – and jumps into the fog.

“That is a very scary creature, aniki,” Akari says quietly.

Unfortunately, the time for distracting yourself passes, as Kiki-hime and Kiku-chan stand up from their kneeling positions at the coffee table. They are the only ones in the living room, though you can hear soft voices in the guest room. It is, as you feared, Kiku-chan who approaches you first, and Kiki-hime remains back, looking at you with concern.

You look into those steaming eyes of liquid gold, and you feel your heart break a little. She lifts one sleeve, her delicate fingers hidden by the white cotton, to cover her mouth. You go to one knee, then the other, and sit seiza before her. Akari-niji-chan, quietly carries the two bodies into the guest room, and then pauses, looking between you and Kiki-hime. All your attention is on Kiku-chan and Akari bows her head, closing the door behind her. The voices quiet immediately.

You carefully flex your hands, and the pain is livable, but when you take Ame-no-Omukade-no-Musume out of ~Nowhere~, touching it is agonizing. You don't let that show on your face, but you hear Kiki-hime's sharp gasp as she sees the state of your hands. Kiku-chan is still looking into your eyes, though she glances at Ame-no-Omukade-no-Musume once, as you offer it to her with your head bowed.

Closing your eyes you murmur softly to the dragonette you have failed so utterly, to whom you broke your vow. “I have failed you, Matagama Kiku. Please forgive this unworthy snake. I can offer you nothing more than my life in apology.” You mean every word of it....and to your immense pride, Kiki-hime says nothing to stop you from offering Kiku-chan the ultimate demonstration of your sorrow. For it is just that. It isn't suicide, or despair. It is simply...accepting that you cost her something more valuable to her than her own life.

You feel her lift the sword from your hands, and you place them on your thighs, head bowed and eyes closed. There is a soft clatter, and you feel yourself enfolded in soft cloth, and the trembling warmth of Matagama Kiku is pressed tightly against you. You open your eyes as she holds you close, slowly and very gingerly returning the embrace.

“Ame-no-Horo....no....Ryuu Ryukusa....I pray to you....heal my master.”

There is the space of three heartbeats.

“Please.”

….

Her words break the chains of black fire around your heart, remind you of exactly who you are....what you are. Remind you of what you have done so far, and what you will do for those you love. And of course, there is the one answer, the inevitable answer that slips from your lips even before you even finish the thought.

“If it is Kiku-chan asking, it can't be helped.”

It makes me wonder, though, just how nasty the upper levels of Sharp Wit, Cold Heart are. We only got to level 3, and Ryukuza's element IS destruction, so hypothetically that and her elemental style might be her strongest talents.
