There's something odd in that look. It's the sort of face that would make someone go "you're so cute when you're angry", which only makes you angrier, but this time you have to admit she'd look cute if you didn't have a tingling feeling from the back of your head telling you that you might be to blame for the furrowed brow, the slightly pulled nose and the thin lips pressing tightly against each other, making the usually deep pink skin pale from the pressure.

Bryld isn't the sort of woman that has eyes you'd call sharp, and her look is hardly any threatening, but your life experience taught you that the cuter and kinder someone is, the worse he becomes when he gets angry. You don't know whether she's really angry, you cannot focus because you have something else going on in your head, distracting you.

For once, you can see the wind. It's difficult to describe, it's still transparent and technically invisible, but you can see it, you can sometimes see flickers of colour sparkling here and there, carrying some ethereal dust that doesn't seem to deposit anywhere. This isn't a problem and doesn't bother you much, but past the canopy of the few trees about you can see that the sky is full of those flickers of iridescent, shifting colours. Sometimes the wind gently caresses Bryld's bunny ears, swirling and twirling around them or tumbling inside her head. She doesn't even seem to notice, you wonder how someone can't notice iridescent wind blowing inside their skull.

But you're getting distracted again, that's not it, that's not what's concerning you.

It's the fact it's daytime. And not dawn, or early morining either: likely around noon.

Where did the past hours go? You were having dinner and talking about fairies and wondering what fairy roads where and how they worked and... What happened? You don't remember anything at all. No idea. Zero. Your head is empty, and a high-pitched, shrill sound fills it when you try to recall last night's events.

"I think she's conscious now", Tahenohan says. She was outside your field of vision, but you realize you can move as you tilt your head to look at her. Licks of iridescent flame and puffs of dusty air twirl irregularly on, beneath and around her hair, briefly, but sometimes enough to pull it and tangle it in its chaotic dance. Her voice sounds incredibly clear too, like she's speaking right next to your eardrum, even though she's keeping a safe distance from Bryld, who's much closer to you.

"Then apologize to her!", Bryld sounds normal, except that she's really trying her best to sound stern, but between her usual bearing and the natural tone of her voice it still sounds like she's just trying to play a part instead of actually being angry, "It's the least you can do after all that she's passed!".

"Now, it's not like anything bad happened...".

"Easy for you to say!", despite Tahenohan's attempts to minimize, it seems that your cartographer decided she's not going to let whatever happened to pass, "You've seen her, she was trying to swim in the air!".

"Well that was-".
"And then she tried to douse your hair, and after she gave up she suggested cooking marshmallows on them!".
"I don't think-".
"And then she kept brushing Leiana's fur and strike it like she wanted to set it on fire with her hands!".

Oh right, Leiana's there too, how did you miss someone her size- Was she that colourful and iridescent before? Why are the stripes on her fur glowing? Why does she have invisible strings attached that reach nowhere? Why do her spider feet have ethereal feelers that plunge in the ground?

"But she's okay now-".
"She's not okay!", Bryld insists, pointing at you, "Her eyes are glowing!".

Your eyes are glowing? Instinctively, you cover your face with your hands. Even in the darkness you can see the inside of your hands, they are illuminated by a faint light coloured...

You can do write-ins, of course.

Also note that the colours are rather generic as presented, various other shades and differences are possible, it just wasn't feasible to make a list that included emerald green, grass green, sienna, ebony, chestnut brown, gold, amber, aquamarine blue, ice blue, sapphire blue and so on.

You have artistic license on the exact hue or variations thereof.

Mix blue and purple, what do you get? That's what I was thinking.

If we wanted to go full special-snowflake we could have the inner circle of the eye as blue, and the further you go out as purple. Or vice versa
>>
>>36858609
How though? Like dark Purple pupil, and lighter Blue iris? I assume since only one color was asked it's meant to be the iris color, rather than some mono-colored eye with sclera and everything.

>>
>>36858638
How is Violet less sue than Blue? If anything it'd surely be the other way around.
>>
>>36858631
I'd rather not spend the whole session voting. It's either going to be fuchsia (or some shade of purple with more blue than red) or heterochromia.

>>36858661
Two-tone irises aren't that snowflake, they're relatively common. The human iris is never completely regular anyways, though admittedly I've mostly seen green to brown transitions in other people.

>>36858703
Keep in mind that in this world purple, blue and green are valid and perfectly acceptable hair colours that surprise nobody.
>>
>>36858727
>Two-tone irises aren't that snowflake,
I meant more on the level where the inner eye has a ring of blue, the middle part is blue fading and becoming more purple until it hits purple on the very end of the eye.

If that makes sense?
>>
>>36858703
Heterochromia is more Sue than either.
>>
>>36858771
I can go with that I suppose.
>>
Why not just to colored pupil rather than some Heterochromia or double-color iris stuff?
>>
>>36858771

Doesn't the contraty make more sense? Darker inside, lighter outside, since the pigment is more spread out?
>>
>>36858839
That's not how eyes work.

Even though your tinged red skin makes it difficult to tell which colour the light is, the mere fact you can see it is enough to make you guess your irises are really glowing. The exact name for that colour, according to the priestesses that raised you, is "Medium purple", except for that one painter priestess who always furrowed her nose and stated it was more of a light slate blue. Regardless, your eyes really are glowing, no kidding.

You uncover your eyes and see Tahenohan sigh as she cautiously approaches you. "I'm sorry. You see, I was preparing some... Non-edible mushrooms before dinner and, well, between the cutting and mincing some shavings might have stuck to my hands and accidentally fell off when I passed you your bowl. I'm really, really sorry".

Liar. She's a big fat liar and the grin she's making, which she can pass for a smile because she's Tahenohan, implies that you're just as guilty as she is. Still, it doesn't look like she's going to say anything that might reveal how all of what happened was by your request.

Whatever it is that happened.

"We lost the whole morning", Leiana complains, her spider legs tapping the ground nervously, "We're going to have to move fast if we want to make up for that. Hop on, and keep on tight. We can reach Arianna's place if we travel into the night as well. Don't worry, I have good night vision", she assures, but you don't, so you'll have to completely trust her.

"Please try and be more careful", Bryld then says sternly, looking straight at Tahenohan, "What if it was poisonous to her? It could have costed us the expedition".

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry", the half-elf doesn't seem too concerned, but Bryld does have a point. If your body somehow took that mushroom addition bad, you would have been stuck in the middle of the wilderness with a sick leader.

"What did I do?", you feel there's other things you should do. Offer apologies, reassure everyone that you're fine and can travel no problem, say something in Tahenohan's defence since you were more than willing to take part in her little "mistake", but having this hole in your memory makes you feel odd and comfortable, like there's an external force purposefully holding a part of your own self locked away and out of your reach.

Bryld isn't really too angry, you can see she was mostly just concerned and seeing you up, responsive and talking is already making her feel a lot easier. Unfortunately, this also brings her old self back and she stares idly at you for a little, then looks away at your question. You see her face get a somewhat red flush as she frowns, probably trying to stop the memories from coming, to no avail.

"N-nothing important", she insists, "Just... Embarrassing stuff people do when they're under hallucinogenics". She doesn't look like the sort that would know how people act when they're higher than Iria, it's more like she just doesn't want to talk about it.

"You should be fine", Tahenohan reassures you, "The dose was very light in any case. It's just some Ether poisoning, it will pass".

"Your hair is burning", you feel stupid for saying it but you can't help yourself.

"Nah", she shrugs, "It's just that you can probably see the winds of magic. It's one of the many possible effects of Ether poisoning. When you were... In worse shape, you might have tried to swim on its currents. They must have looked like rivers to you".

You remember nothing about that, "... Is that how magic users see all the time?".

"I don't know what you're seeing right now, but from what you're saying, I think so", her grin is wide and sincere, "Hope you liked a taste of our world!".

Leiana sighs, facepalming, "Can we go now?".

"I'm sorry I kept you here all morning", it's the most you can offer in terms of apologies without breaking out a potential argument that might put a much worse dent on your expedition. You were lucky enough to get this far, you don't need to fight your own good fortune.

"You don't have to apologize", and Bryld helps you up, making you find out that yes, you can stand and move on your own, but her gesture is still appreciated, "Let's... Let's just all be more careful in the future, okay?".

"Okay~", Tahenohan goes, stifling a giggle, still staring at you.

"Come on, no time to waste", Leiana taps her spider feet again, "Hop on and let's get to Arianna's place", she then stares at you, and taps the ground between your feet with one of her eight spider legs, "And you. Don't try to strike my fur like that again or I'll set you on fire, okay?".

"... Okay?", you blink, "... Did I do something bad to you?".

She stares for a little longer, her eyes turning into two slits, than she looks away and pulls her leg back, "You were out of your mind, let's just never talk about it again".

This isn't helping. On one side, you're still curious, on the other it doesn't look like your friends want to reminisce about your exploits from last night. Except maybe Tahenohan, but she can't do it in front of the others.

You climb on spiderback again, in the usual order, and Leiana sprints off in the distance, at a higher speed than before. Seems like she intends to hustle for the rest of the day, taking very short breaks just for the quickest bites and strictest biological needs and that's it. Again, you find yourself realizing how strange it is to ride a spider, and just how different it feels from an ordinary mount. Less jumpy, more shaky, especially as she runs on all eight legs, with her spider abdomen bobbing and doing an odd massage to your backside.

>>

Strike is basically hitting it, while stroking it is basically moving your hand over/through it in this case.

The first instance should probably have beened "stroked" and the second "stroke".
>>
>>36859873
Stroke is basically caressing. Strike... Well, the closest thing I can think of in this situation is "striking a fire". You know, rubbing something to get friction to start a fire.
>>
Seeing how Leiana is the one that has the lay of the land, you decide to trust her and follow her travel plan, even if it looks a little rough and you've been cautioned against prowling around at night. She did say something about having good night vision though, so you think you'll be fine? Besides, the two largest predators around are most likely her and Arianna, that should make you safe.

"Where does Arianna live?", you ask, trying to strike a conversation to ease the mood a little.

"At the foot of the mountain, she has her nest there, but I think she's almost always at the ogre's place", Leiana explains. You notice she isn't short of breath or anything despite being practically running for a while; she must have an amazing stamina to keep a body this size moving for so long, you wonder if she can really do this until night falls.

"Is it far from here?".

"Not if we departed in the morning", you know she's frowning in disapproval even if you can only see her back and her ponytail, "Good thing she's nocturnal".

"By the way, what do you mean that I was striking your fur?", you were wondering whether to go there again or not, but it's a question that just begs to be asked.

"You were striking it with your hand, like with flint and steel", she explains with mild annoyance in her voice, "All while blathering something about the sparks".

Of course, you don't remember doing that, but you think it has something to do with how Ether poisoning was giving you magic vision. You glance down at the spider hair all around you, and while your eyes are still glowing you can see it has a strange glow and some deposits of a strange, powder-like substance. You can understand how you would think of striking it to start a fire, if you were that high.

Fortunately you didn't really set her on fire, that would have been really bad.

"I didn't do anything too weird, did I?", you ask Tahenohan, since she's sitting in front of you, practically on your lap.

"Well, I've seen plenty of people get high. When I lived, there were plenty of plants and other vegetable matter that got you there if you smoked it, and they liked smoking a lot", she chuckles, "I'd say all considered you was a little disappointing. Granted, yours was Ether poisoning not proper hallucinogenics, but still...".

"We should be glad it was nothing serious", Bryld comments as she clenches you from behind, her arms wrapped tightly beneath your chest. With all the bobbing Leiana's spider abdomen is doing, your cartographer is constantly pushed against you; she usually stays a little farther behind so she doesn't press her body against you, but she can't help it this time. Since you have a sizeable breast yourself, you're fully aware what all this bobbing and bouncing does and how it feels, so you perfectly understand why she's pressing her breasts against your back like that even if she's a shy girl.

"Bryld, did I do anything to you?", you wonder, "I want to apologize if I did".

Her hug stiffens a little, but she answers rather confidently, "You did nothing to me". After a bit, though, she adds, "You just touched my ears a bit, that's all".

"Did that annoy you?".

"It- Don't worry about it. You weren't yourself", she doesn't sound like she wants to keep talking about it.

"Tahenohan, do you always see the world like this?", you distract yourself with this topic, feeling a little amazed at how many extra details and invisible stuff she sees all the time, every time. It's like watching a different world altogether.

"It's difficult to explain", she answers, "Senses are individual, unless you link them up with a spell it's almost impossible to compare how you perceive the world...", she doesn't sound sure on how to go about this.

"Do you know any sense sharing spells?", you ask Tahenohan.

"Nope", she answers, giving you immediate disappointment, "It's not my field. I know some people who used them though, they say it always feels odd, like you know how people have different sensitivities? Linking or sharing touch leads to very awkward situations, and linking taste is always interesting but feels extremely odd. The rest aren't usually a big problem if you do it with someone of your race, but... Well", she smiles, "If we shared each other's senses, we'd all be very confused".

"Your ears are very sensitive, right?", you ask Bryld, "I remember you could hear spiders move in a copse of tree all the way across a grassy field".

"Y-you're exaggerating", she stiffens a little as she shyly fidgets, "My ears are bigger and directional, so if I point them somewhere I can hear better in that direction. I can also hear ultrasounds... Which I guess would make you feel very weird".

"Ultrasounds?", you've heard that term already but can't remember where exactly.

"Uhm... You know dog whistles? That kind of sounds".

"Oh", now you get it, that kind of sounds that's so high-pitched you can't even hear it. Yes, you would definitely feel very confused if you would suddenly start hearing sounds you didn't know existed. "I suppose even linking up with Leiana would be odd. I mean she has great eyesight if she can see in the night".

"We only have good night vision", she corrects, but doesn't explain.

"... We?", you decide to press.

"My race", another pause, then she lets out a quick sigh, feeling the implicit question, "We can see well in the night, that doesn't mean we have great eyesight. That's elves".

"Is it true?", you ask Tahenohan.

"I'm constantly told I have amazing eyesight", she shrugs, like it's nothing special, "I don't know how ordinary humans see".

She's right, comparing senses is no easy task.

And once again, your hustling spidergirl friend reminds you of how much land you can cover when you have eight legs and boundless stamina.

The light forests and tall grass typical of lakeside vegetation has changed to rolling hills which then got suddenly steeper. The vegetation is thicker, forcing Leiana to slow down; this greatly reduces the bobbing and bouncing of her second abdomen, which is great relief for your sore butt but makes Bryld take the chance to pull away from you with equal relief. Well at least your back doesn't feel so hot any more, even the progressing dusk isn't making the heat go down much.

The humidity isn't really increasing since you're moving away from the lake, but then again it isn't decreasing much either. The mountain in front of you is so close that you no longer recognize it as such: it's just a huge, green wall of trees and jungle, with grass everywhere there isn't some underbrush already. The bad thing is you can't see much now that the sun is setting, but Leiana doesn't want to stop, as she stated.

You wonder if Bryld will manage with her map, if you travel at night.

"Have you ever had to deal with fairies?", you ask out of the blue, to no one in particular.

"Not really", Tahenohan answers.
"No, never", Bryld adds.
"I've always known they were around, but that was my first time meeting some", Leiana admits after a long pause, though in her defence she was looking for a way to climb up without forcing you to hang from her human torso. Some climbs are just too steep when she's being ridden, "I guess they bailed it when the Fomor War came around".

"You think they're returning now because it's over?", you wonder.

"That would be smart of them, and I'm told they're smarter than they look", she confirms.

You can't see why it would be a bad thing. Fairies aren't known for being dangerous or harmful creatures.

"Speaking of which, can any of you make bugle calls?".

"Bugle calls?", all of your companions are somewhat confused, as if unfamiliar with the term. You admit you're not really sure what they are but you suppose they're made with a trumpet.

"One of the fairies gave me this", and you pull out Chax's brass trumpet, "She said we can call them if we sound a bugle call with this at one of the Fairy Roads when we find them".

Bryld gives it a long stare, then claps once, "Oh! Bugle calls! Of course. They're used in the military to pass orders and make calls".

You heard fairies became pretty militarized in the past centuries, you can only presume they all receive some sort of training and therefore find it customary to use such means of communication in everyday situations. "I never played a trumpet before and I have no idea how a bugle call even sounds like".

"I don't know either", Tahenohan answers like you're talking in an alien language.

"Maybe Luna can?", Bryld suggests, "She served in the military. Well, it's not the fairy military, but I guess she would know what a bugle call should sound like".

Your cartographer has a point. Unfortunately, Luna isn't with you, meaning you would have to go and fetch her if you ever find a Fairy Road and need to call the fairies. That or you could improvise: it's just a trumpet, how difficult can it be?

"What should we do about them, though?", you put the trumpet away before you suddenly drop it. Leiana doesn't give the idea of someone who's going to stop and search if you drop something right now, "I never had to deal with fairies".

"Well they're not dangerous are they?", Bryld wonders, "I don't think they will cause problems".

"Let's invite them for coffee", Tahenohan suggests with a smile, "Next time we see them, we'll invite her home for a nice coffee with all of us".

Your home is very humble and spartan, but it's an idea.

You don't have much of a choice but to just sit and hold onto Leiana's human torso as night falls and she just keeps on going. You don't know if Bryld and Tahenohan also have good night vision, but unless it's as good as that of the arachne, you doubt they can see much. The vegetation is much thicker here than it was before, forcing her to keep changing directions and squeeze between trees, but most importantly it also covers the stars, the moon and whatever other natural source of lighting there could be.

Everything is black. Whether your eyes are open or closed it makes no difference, and yet you're still moving, quicker than you would be if walking, your butt and thighs are rock hard and will keep being sore for a whole week considering the past few days, but even if you could climb down and get some rest, you wouldn't know where to lie. Forget about putting up a tent.

You can still hear various insect calls and the distant cries of birds of prey. You also heard the rustling of a small stream but it passed, not that you needed to refill your waterskins already since you departed from a lake, but it's a landmark you were hoping to memorize.

Eventually, Leiana slows down until she stops completely. You get the feeling she's looking around seeing how she sometimes turns here and there. She then picks her pace up again, and stops after a while. She does so half a dozen times until she stops and says "Okay, we're there. It's been a while and I was having troubles recognizing it at night".

While a part of you is glad you've arrived, you can't see anything. Seriously, it's all black. Pitch black. Too dark to see. And you think Tahenohan has dozed off; lucky girl can always count on your breasts for a soft, comfortable cushion.

Also, it seems like your eyes stopped glowing. Damn, and right when they would have been useful...

"I can't see the ground", you sincerely point out, to which Leiana answers by just lowering her own center of mass until you hear the soft "thump" of her spider abdomen touching what you presume is the grassy earth.

"Just get down for now, I'll light your lantern for you", she insists. Well, you can't really do much about it. Carefully, you slip your finger beneath Tahenohan's thighs and lift her, feeling once again just how amazingly light she is, and keeping her head on your breasts if only because this way you're absolutely certain where it is at all times.

Climbing down is harder than it looks without hands. Your thighs sting like hell and your breath is cut short by your jolting muscles as you attempt to move them. Your buttocks hurt too, which only wants you to get off quicker. Bryld, having her hands free, uses them to help herself and climbs down before you do; as tempted as you are to ask her to get Tahenohan, you absolutely cannot do that when you can't see anything at all.

Eventually you manage to slide down until you touch the grassy ground with the tip of your foot. Fortunately, Leiana went as low as possible, and with great effort you pull your other leg to this side too, stumbling blindly a little as you try your best to keep your footing despite feeling like your backside and inner thighs have been turned to stone. You can't even close your legs to relax them. Well, you can, but it takes patience, effort and willpower.

Meanwhile, you hear someone rummaging through your backpack and then grabbing the lantern hung there. After a few sparks, Leiana manages to lit it, and you can finally see again.

You're in the middle of a dense tropical forest on a steep hill. Vegetation is all around you, tall trees and thick bushes abound, and a large cavern lies dead ahead of you.

And Bryld's inner thighs must be feeling like yours do, seeing her stance.

You take a moment to recover from the pulsing, throbbing pain in your thighs. Walking feels like a quest way too high above your possibilities to undertake, so you pass the time talking, and looking at how peacefully Tahenohan is sleeping. How does she even do that?

"Is this Arianna's place?", you wonder.

"Yes, but she's probably out. Like I said, she's nocturnal", Leiana keeps looking around, as if looking for signs of her presence. She looks obviously nervous and is uneasy even just holding you lantern.

"Think we can go inside? We really need to rest a little. Eat something too", you're quite hungry as you've skipped dinner and had lunch in a flash. You're surprised at how fresh Leiana looks, it's like she could keep hustling until morning and can afford to waste energies through being concerned for something.

"What? Oh, well. I-I don't think she would mind", she keeps looking around and not at you, as if she's afraid of something.

You give Bryld a look, and she nods, moving her legs with visible effort until walking awkwardly and with a wider stance than normal becomes bearable. She takes the lantern from Leiana's hands and the arachne backs up immediately.

"I-I'll see if she's around", she justifies herself, "You go inside and rest. Don't worry, she won't eat you".

"Are you sure?", you wonder. Maybe monsters don't have the same culture and habits when visiting other people, but you would think it's considered rude to go inside someone else's house when they're out. You don't think you would like to come back home and find a few people camped inside.

"Don't worry, I said!", and she steps back a little further, "You don't have night vision, I do, and so does she. It's better for me to just go look for her. You wait inside. It's dark and it's late go inside where it's warm and sheltered".

Not like you stand the ghost of a chance of going cold in this weather.

"What's wrong?", you wonder, looking curiously at Leiana, "You're acting weird".

"No I'm not, it's the most reasonable thing to do".

"We came all the way so you could meet her and be friends again, so you could talk and make up", you start to get the distinct feeling that she hasn't realized the implications of what she was doing until now, and being so close to her old friend and knowing she could see her any moment is visibly panicking her, "Don't pull out now".

"I-I'm not pulling out!".

"Yes you are", you insist, "Look you've been very kind to us, carrying us on your back and travelling well into the night. Allow me to pay you back, I want to help you, but I need you to stay here".

"I-I don't need the help of an outsider!", you see she grasps the hilt of her sword, which she's been keeping at her waist to let you ride more comfortable. You don't think she's going to draw it, she's nervously grasping the hilt to look for comfort.

"I would like us to stop being outsiders". You give a bit of time to let your words sink into her, offering a genuine look to back them up. The silence that follows is long and filled with expectation, until you notice Leiana isn't actually looking at you, and you hear Bryld go, "Uhm... Lillith?", with a strange tone.

And when you turn around, you remember just how unnaturally silent arachne are when they move.

If Leiana was huge, this specimen is enormous. Pointy and hard brown fur covers all of her spider body, the lantern light casting odd reflections like the spider fur is coated in oil, her pedipalps are longer though with stubbier fangs, and a human body protrudes from the spider thorax.

She has the shape of a strong-bodied woman, but still feminine, with a silk purple sarong to cover her nethers and nothing else, only her long purple hair that falls and covers part of her breasts.

She's staring at you, her look curious.

Alright. Time to get the stupid question away first.

"Hello. I am Lillith Taieart", you must sound somewhat stupid, holding a sleeping half-elf in a princess carry while you introduce yourself to the largest spider you've ever seen, with the upper body of a very busty woman that isn't wearing anything but a purple sarong. Actually, thinking about it, you don't sound stupid at all, the whole situation is so uncommon that you don't believe there's any social norms to respect but common courtesy, "Sorry for intruding, we came to visit with a friend. Are you Arianna?".

The spider woman crosses her arms and tilts her head as she stares at you. Her blood red eyes are large and round, and together with her small nose and puffy cheeks gives her a harmless air; or would if you couldn't see the rest of her body. Even from here you can tell she's larger than Leiana, and you thought she was huge.

"It's her", you hear her confirming from behind you. Arianna then looks up at Leiana, staring her and doing the head tilt again. The two arachne stare at each other, Leiana being increasingly uncomfortable and back-pedalling a little; considering the elevation granted from their spider bodies, it's like you're not even in the way.

Still, that makes you kind of uncomfortable, and you all have bodies to rest and biological needs to take care of. You start shooting encouraging and pressing glances at Leiana, showing you won't budge until she speaks, and the spider woman fidgets until some words come out of her mouth, "H-hi, Arianna".

"Leiana", Arianna answers, sounding somewhat surprised. Her voice too is inappropriate for someone her size, then again you can't imagine what kind of voice would feel appropriate, "It's been a while".

"F-four years".

"Four years, indeed", Arianna nods, "I was about to go out, but come inside, I'll make a blackberry infusion".

"Is it okay if we come inside, too?", you ask Arianna, who was already turning around, not even waiting for an answer. She turns a little more, gives you a weird stare with one raised eyebrow, and pauses for a long moment.

"... Yes?", she answers, as if she didn't understand the question in the first place, then immediately goes back into the cave. You make sure Leiana goes in before you do, so as to cut her escape route. Well, socially speaking at least, if she really wanted to get out she'd have no problem at all trampling you, she must be about ten times your weight.

The cavern inside is the kind of place you'd expect a family of bears to settle in and make a burrow of. It feels very natural, meaning there's plenty of plants, grass and various sorts of vegetables and berries growing from between the rocks, mushrooms on the walls and floor and moss hanging from the ceiling. You get the feeling part of this is actively cultivated and it's not just all wild plants, and you do see a few tools scattered about.

Apparently, arachne have no need for tables and shelves, but she does have iron pots, one of which she fills with water from a small stream that bubbles out from a wall and flows down across the ground until it enters a crack on the other end of the cave, continuing underground. Even though you're sure this is just a natural occurrence, having running water is a great relief for a traveller.

Leiana keeps fidgeting nervously, while Arianna seems chill and relaxed like she's doing an everyday routine. Everything happens in silence for a while, until Arianna is done lighting the fire to boil the water on and finished preparing the infusion. At that point, she begins staring at Leiana.

And no words come out from either party.

You decide to lie Tahenohan down on a bedroll. You're afraid this will make her less comfortable, but you're going to need your hands free if you want to drink something warm. Well, you wouldn't mind something cold either, but you guess you can't do cold infusions. Or maybe you can?

This isn't the time to think about such trifle matters, though.

You start telling Arianna about yourself, your group of explorers and the various, often funny coincidences and strange games of chance that brought you here. The Exploration Charter, New Royo, the first meeting with Leiana, your encounter with the fairies and the journey on spiderback.

You don't go any further, because you want Leiana to do the serious talk herself, but you had plenty to talk about already, enough to get to the point where the infusion is ready and you're handed a wooden cup.

Probably thanks to your diplomatic introduction and the passing time, and in a certain measure also thanks to the wear of the long travel, Leiana decides to speak up and be done with it, "Arianna, look, I-I... I'm sorry".

Arianna looks up, giving Leiana a blank stare as she continues, "I'm sorry for all the things I said, I-I wasn't thinking straight, I was in pain, I was sad, I wanted to- I had to take it out on someone, and you were the only one there, I-".

"What are you talking about?".

Leiana stops, staring goggle-eyed at Arianna, who looks honestly dumbfound.

"What?".
"What things did you say?".
"Do- Did you forget the argument we had when we last saw each other? Did you forget how angry I was? All the horrible things I said?".

Arianna blinks, then sits back a little, though the arachne "sit" is still an odd sight to behold, "I wasn't paying attention to what we were saying, we were both in pain, these were our two last living relatives".

Leiana blinks as well. Once, twice, more and more.

"I was in such pain I didn't even come to look for you any more", Arianna then admits, shaking her head.

Whatever Leiana was expecting to hear and talk about, it wasn't this. She's completely dumbfound, her face is too easy to read. Her eyes are also a little bloodshot and she keeps blinking; it's too dark to see well, but you think there's tears rolling down her face.

"There weren't many of us to begin with, I was lucky to have a sister and I was really happy she laid a litter with your brother", Arianna continues in the meantime. She sounds relaxed, but looking at her expression you can tell the pain is still somewhere in her heart, it's just covered by a thick scar tissue, "She was the only other female of our species left... Other than you, Tama and me".

Leiana tries to relax and manages to steady her breathing, she doesn't seem to notice nor care about the tears streaking her cheeks, "We should have kept closer to each other", she says, "Our brothers were killed, one by one. If only we...".

Arianna shakes her head, moving closer to Leiana to pat her arm, "Now now. They died because they were protecting us. They knew that as long as we were alive, we could still repopulate. It's okay, we're alive, their sacrifices were not in vain".

"Nothing we do will bring them back".

"Of course not", Arianna shrugs, "You can't change the past. They bought us a future, all we have to do is not waste it. Let's just be grateful and pray on their graves, when our children will play in the hills and jungles again, we can teach them about our siblings who gave their lives to ensure their future".

And this is when Leiana starts trembling and sniffing, her face red and her expression bent in a pain she cannot manage to bear and a sadness she is failing to contain. Despite her valiant efforts, she breaks down into tears, "Why did they have to die? Why did they die for me? Why?".

Of course, Arianna doesn't have any answers, all she can do is offer her a shoulder.

Hearing someone cry is never a pleasant experience. Most of the time people shed tears for the stupidest things, but that doesn't count as crying: that's whining. It's like with small children, most mothers learn from the beginning to tell when they're crying because they need attention or when they're crying because they want it.

The Fomor wars are never kind on people, some of the other children in your orphanage were brought there because they lost not just their parents but all other relatives that could take care of them. But children adapt, they don't have much in the way of ties to begin with, and even if losing the most important ones is traumatic, they can move on.

There is a name for when people cannot deal with everyone else dying around them. You heard it being called the survivor's guilt. When all ties are severed, grown adults find out that they're much weaker than they thought. Seeing how this play developed, you suspect Leiana is only now dealing with the fact that all her family is dead.

Not much you can do but wait until she finishes crying. On the bright side, she doesn't cry for long, and the infusion is still warm and steaming, though you might not feel like having tea and pastries as much as before.

"I'm sorry", Leiana says, wiping her face, "I suppose I've made a very stupid scene just now".

"I'm just glad to have you back", Arianna pats her shoulder again.

Bryld sits awkwardly next to you, her own wooden cup in hand. It seems that between stretching and self-massaging she's been able to get her legs to move normally again. You frankly forgot about your own muscle pain for the moment, until the sight of your cartographer's supple legs sent a dull jolt down your own.

"Well, all is well that which ends well, right?", she whispers to you as she watches the scene.

"Do you live here on your own?", you ask Arianna to break the ice and steer the conversation away from the sad moment that just passed. In the end Leiana needs to move on, and you're set to help her doing so like you were when you suggested bringing her here.

"I do", she confirms, "I often visit Susanna and hang out there most of the time, but then I come back home for the night. Her place isn't fit for me, even if the size is okay".

"Would-", Leiana begins, then gulps down some infusion to clear her through, "Would you terribly mind if I moved here? I- I'm sorry for having been this stupid, I really think we should stick close from now on".

"Of course you can come stay here", Arianna blinks like the other arachne just asked her if she's a spider.

"Do you know that humans are beginning to settle the Shadow Marches again?", you interrupt them, deciding to tackle a sensitive subject.

"Oh, we do", Arianna nods calmly, "The harpies keep saying that".

"They won't shut up about it, rather", Leiana grunts.

The larger arachne seems relatively unfazed by the news, "I was thinking of coming your way to check your people out, but I've always had something else to do and felt a bit lazy, so I waited for you to come closer instead".

"I... Still don't feel ready to trust them", Leiana confesses, although she clearly tries to be more positive, "Half of our kind was killed by them, after all".

"But they're not the same humans", oh how easy everything sounds when Arianna says it.

"We don't plan to do that", you assure them, "I'm here to explore the lands on behalf of the Kingdom of Rune, and I want our races to have peaceful relationships".

Arianna looks at you, over and over, as if seeing you for the first time, then looks at Leiana, "Why didn't you bring any men?".

"I- I didn't go look for them, they just stumbled into me".

>"Why did you never visit Leiana before, Arianna?".
>"Want me to arrange a meeting?".
>"What do you need men for?".
>Other?

So hard to not flirt with her...
>>
We'd have lost any men to the harpies anyways. Couldn't bring any in the first place.
>>
"Wait a moment. If you weren't angry... Why didn't you visit Leiana before?", you ask Arianna. Now that you think about it, it doesn't make sense.

"Oh, I thought she was busy", she explains with a shrug. Even Leiana gives her a long stare. "What?".

"... Busy doing... What?".

"I thought you got a head start on me and put up a family", Arianna explains in the most casual, chill tone a woman can possibly use in this situation, "You live closer to humans, after all, it was a matter of reaching out and grabbing one for you".

Leiana's cup nearly slips out of her grasp. After all she's been through, all the held-back pain and all the cathartic crying at the end, finding out she's kept her feelings locked up for four years for this reason is shaking her up with something different than pain, sadness or even anger.

"... You... I... What?", she is clearly at a loss of words.

"When I saw these people I thought they were your extended family. Like, the relatives of your partner. It's tough to take care of a whole litter on your own", Arianna nods sagely.

"But- But I- I didn't even want to trust humans again!", she throws her arms up in frustration, and some of her legs too. It's inappropriate to point it out, but it looks funny when she does that, she looks like a tip-tap dancing spider.

"How did you expect to make babies, then? You're not a fairy".

Arianna's confusion only makes Leiana more confused herself, but about her feelings. Her desperate attempts at saying something rational crumble in a long, deep sigh, at which point she just gives up.

"... Want me to arrange a meeting?", you offer.

"Oh yes please", Arianna is so quick you barely managed to finish the sentence before her answer. Leiana stares at her, then blushes into a deep, tomato red and just shakes her head.

>"Do you have any preference on men?".
>"Would you be willing to come closer to our settlements?".
>"Would you prefer our men to come to you?".
>"Would it be okay to just talk at first?".

I will share the gift when it is needed.

>"Would it be okay to just talk at first?".

>>36865279
we can give them other gifts and blessings, but that particular gift and blessing is only for Tahebutt and Bunnybutt
>>
>>36865279
What's needed here isn't the gift. It's actually having a relationship between the two people's that isn't with swords and shields.
>>
Since at least one of the two has plenty of enthusiasm with the deal, and the other still needs to wrap her head around the fact she needs to pick a mate at some point, you decide to press on with this talk, if anything because it's a much needed distraction to help Leiana move on.

"Please take note that humans aren't used to deal with... Well, people like you", you explain as simply as you can, "They probably won't be ready to do, well... You're going to talk and get to know each other first. They need to know you, trust you, not feel like you're a threat to them. You must be more patient than a harpy".

The last example hits home and Arianna gives an understanding nod, "Oh, I get it".

"Would you be willing to move closer to our settlements, though?", you then ask, "It's a long walk until here, and very few will be willing to do it. If we meet somewhere closer, it will be easier for both of us".

"As long as we get settled somewhere", Arianna shrugs, "We can't take care of a whole litter on our own, we need the fathers to stay and help. Their family too", she nods, "Yes. It's bonding".

"Do you have any preference on men?", you then ask with a smile.

"Oh no, I don't, any will do", Arianna gives another shrug with a quick, genuine, disarming honesty.

It takes quite a bit of silence and staring for Leiana to realize you're all waiting on her opinion, "W-what? Me?"

She notices your teasing smile and Arianna's inscrutable stare, at which point she blushes again and shakes her head as she moves back, "Oh no no no. No. I'm sorry, I can't. I can't do it".

"Of course you can. You just need to get those clothes out of the way and they'll do the rest, I assure you-".

"I need some time!", her face gets redder and redder, "By Ishtar's breasts just leave me be for a little bit!".

As funny as it is to tease her, yes, she needs a bit of time.

Also, you're dead tired and Bryld has been yawning for a while.

After having sat on a rock for a while, getting up is almost more effort than you can bear. Bryld is in your same condition, you can tell, but you both manage to move your behinds because you all have one objective that you absolutely want to accomplish tonight.

Getting in that bedroll.

Neither of you actually gets inside the bedroll itself, to be honest. You just sleep on top of it, because it's so hot you don't even really need to keep warm or anything, and since you're already in the shelter of a cave, you don't even need to set up a tent. Not that you'd have the energies to.

Arianna informs you she'll head out for her night stroll and may come back with some food, but to just ignore her as she can see in the dark, like Leiana. The other arachne is poising in a corner, finding a position to sleep. From what you've seen, arachne just sleep upright, or sometimes lie down on their human bellies if there's something soft and at sufficient elevation.

Before turning out the lantern light, you face Bryld's tired and confused gaze as you put all three bedrolls next to each other, with Tahenohan already sleeping on the first.

"I know this cave is large", you explain to her, "But so is Arianna. She needs to be able to move freely to come and go in the night, we have to stay close and not in the way".

Your idea makes sense, and she's way too tired to complain or point anything out, so she just nods and agrees, slumping down on the central bedroll.

Whatever thought you might have had about your two travelling companions, it is forgotten as soon as your tired and sore body lies down and the light goes out. You do manage to reach out with an arm to hug both of them, or so you think, but between the long hustle, the night in which you probably gave them hell thanks to those mushrooms and dealing with Leiana's trauma, you're way too tired to do anything but cuddle together.

You find comfort in feeling both of them welcome this little bit of skinship before falling asleep

And this is the end of Episode 16!

I'm as dead tired as Lillith is, which makes it easy to write that kind of stuff, but I'm glad the story is progressing.

As a reference, I think this is pretty much as dramatic as this quest will get. Like I said, the point is for it to be laid-back and relaxing, so don't be too concerned at the mention of war, death and survivor's guilt.

I'll archive the thread, remember to check twitter for next session.
