Welcome to the LVIII installment of "Disney Villains Victorious."

Disney Villains Victorious is a new /tg/ homebrew project based on the idea of a world, not entirely unlike our own, in which all the villains from all the Disney animated feature films were not defeated at the ends of their movies but were instead victorious, completing their goals in part or in whole.

It is a world in which Ursula rules the seas, defied only by the uncatchable Pirate Lords, the cutthroat merchants of the East India Trading Company and the might of Atlantis and its magitech-toting mercenaries. It is a world where the grasslands and jungles and forests are prowled not only by fearsome primal beasts like Shere Kahn and Scar but also by the ruthless, tireless hunters that stalk them. It is a world where Europe has been divvied up between evil sorcerous monarchs like Maleficent, the Horned King, Grimhilde and Jafar, mad, inquisitorial clergymen like Frollo, and Dark Gods like Hades and Chernobog.

It is not, however, a world completely devoid of courage, heroism or hope. Around the world, the PCs' characters and their allies plot and plan, fight and strive and win their own victories against the villains that would rule them. The time to fight and to be free is now.

>>
Even if I personally am not, I know a lot of people are fans of the whole Gridlocked Expansion thing. Is it worth creating a separate, linked page on 1d4chan?
>>
>>36956922
Before we dive into Gridlocked, is everything ready for the beta?
>>
>>36956896
My apologies there. I thought I might have been missing something but I wanted to get the new thread started before the old one dropped off the board.
>>
>>36956922
I think that its probably worth creating a second linked page.

>>36956942
As I recall, what's left to do is statting up more villains and a few of the remaining Kings. I hadn't meant to curtail discussion of the Core game with the way I started this thread. I just chose the name and picture because of the discussion from the previous threads and because I don't have a lot of appropriate Disney pictures on this phone.
>>
>>36956942
We need the last four hunters and at least a villain per region.
>>
>>36956922
>>36956922
>>36956942
>>36956952
I THINK being done with Beta means that it's time to write the core PDF, and I'd like to see a healthy population of Villains before that happens. That said, majority rules. Anyhow, I'm going to stat up old Buldeo as Nimble/Charming.
>>
>>36956994
I was the guy who wrote up Nemo in the last thread. I feel like we should also write up stuff for Mother Madeline and Al-Bahdros. I can do so if needed, but it will take a while.
>>
>>36957045
A PDF will not be complete until we have a veritable wealth of glorious Drawfag's drawings to add in for art.
>>
>>36957045
>>36956991
Aside from the hunters, do we really need more than one villain per region? That seems like something a GM would make
>>
>>36957082
I'd say it varies based on region. Obviously the Pirate Lords and the Hunters will have multiple.
>>
>>36956404
Im feelin a like writing some fluff

Heres some ideas, but feel free to suggest stuff

Bill cipher and Xanatos meeting

AUTO and Dössel in diplomatic negotations

A report about Captain Nemo attacking

King Furgoson and Beudo getting into the Hunters club
>>
>>36957082
I agree that providing one villain per Land as a template for DMs to work off of is reasonable, and that we oughtn't knock ourselves out trying to stat out a slew of baddies for each nation and territory.

>>36957057
>>36957045
Also, I'd really like to get a polished PDF made, though I don't mind if it's before or while we work on Gridlock. I'm still searching for a good artist to commission for a DTP group picture like I promised, but I haven't found anyone I liked yet. Do any of you have any recommendations?
>>
>>36957134
My first choices from your list would be:

A report about Captain Nemo attacking
Bill Cipher and Xanatos meeting

And my write-in suggestion would be:
Urban legend/creepypasta story about good-glitch Vanellope

You know, I know it's been said that Toy Story is hard to work into a modern setting in part because its a story with no real Big Bad to have win, but with the way that mega-corps like BUY n' LARGE are a thing in Gridlock, what if the "villain" of the Toy Story characters is throw-away consumerism?

Instead of children having
toys be the companions they carry throughout their childhoods, more and more children are simply throwing their toys away for newer ones, never building those important attachments.

Alternatively, you could set up the Toy Story faction as an underground resistance to the Monsters INC. monsters who are trying to kidnap the children for their scream power.

They'd get on like a house afire.

File: Buldeo.jpg (37 KB, 593x399)

37 KB JPG
Okay, here's my proposal:

3. Buldeo
Role: Nimble/Charming
Country of Origin: India
Size: Medium
Species: Human

---Attributes---
Robustness: 9
Agility: 18
Intelligence: 7
Sensibility: 7
Charm: 15
Will: 4/4

---Skills---
Athletics: 5
Acrobatics: 7
Melee: 5
Ranged: 9
Brawl: 3
Prevent Harm: 8
Endure: 10
Stealth: 5
Deceit: 12
Persuasion: 10
Intimidate: 8
Travel: 3
Insight: 5

---Traits---
Think You Can Hide From Me?: +2 to Insight when trying to detect people in Stealth.
Big Game Hunter: +3 on ranged rolls against large, dangerous animals. Particularly mean kittens don't count.
Willful Self-Delusion: Buldeo gains +4 on Endure rolls to ignore Charm-based social attacks, but gains -4 against Sensibility-based social attacks.

---Powers---
I'm Knowing You Are Down Here: Buldeo can reroll Insight checks to find characters in Stealth twice, but if he chooses to use these rerolls he cannot perform any other actions that round.
The Mighty Hunter: In his arrogance, Buldeo may reroll against social strikes twice with a +10 bonus.....except for those that point out his incompetence of how things really work in the Jungle.
....Not: Anyone making a check that would discover Buldeo's incompetence, even himself, takes a -10 penalty (Buldeo does not need to actively oppose such rolls) and this secret cannot be discovered through the use of any powers, though any power that would normally do so reduce the penalty by 2. However, pointing this flaw out to him will completely shatter his ego. The first time, and only the first time, this flaw is used in a successful social strike, it deals double strikes and forces him to reroll all his rolls and keep the WORSE result from then on, except for rolls which would be effected by his other powers, which now only receive one reroll instead of two.

---Equipment---
Splendid Rubberwood-stock Rifle: +4 to Ranged. Very aesthetically pleasing
Bejeweled Dagger: +2 to Melee. It'd probably sell for a very pretty penny.

http://deadline.com/2012/06/disney-makes-pitch-deal-for-stuff-of-legend-with-pete-candeland-directing-284859/

Guys, we could incorporate a Disney movie that hasn't even been made yet into the setting fairly accurately and update it later when the movie comes out.....
>>
>>36958987
Maybe he was a real hero, and a crapdillion action figures were made of him before whatever took him down happened?
>>
Thanks to all the Gridlock posts I now have a new obsession with Fireball Charming, thanks guys.

Do we have the 'basic' statblock for the hunters? Or should I just dig up Gaston and tweak.
>>
>>36958987
previously we've talked about ignoring Toy Story itself, and just insert non-toy versions of it's characters into the setting, like having a human Sheriff Woody in Alameda Slim's territory for example
>>
>>36959209
We can do that, but there are possible ways of including Toy Story that aren't ridiculous. I'm not pushing one way or the other though.
>>
>>36959209
>Real Woody for classic setting
>Toy Woody for modern setting
>>
>>36959306
I still prefer integrating the Modern and Future stuff into the preexisting DVV setting over making a new setting or doing a timeskip
>>
>>36959347
That can sorta work, in any case I'm fervently against a time skip at least.
>>36959209
I'm thinking that can work pretty well really, especially since toy story means bring either way because toys are gonna be thought of as toys because they pretend to be... Well toys.
>>
To bring a question over from the last thread, if we are going to have the Buzz Lightyear tv show and Lilo and Stitch in this world, how are we going to handle the fact that each of these had their own Galaxy-wide organisations?
Inter-dimensional fuckery similar to the previous setting?
>>
>>36959492
>>36959347
I'm against integration. The setting barely fits together as is.
>>
>>36959533
Admittedly that is true, but I was thinking we could have griflock factions instead of the various factions that are there instead.
Or to have it completely stand alone.

Oh hey, Gridlock is the subject of this thread.

Christmas special is coming along swell, should be out by tonight so you guys have a little something to read for Christmas proper. It's another visit to San Fransokyo, got some more superheroics tossed around. Needless to say, as great as San Fransokyo is, it'll be good to come back to the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs flow.

Again--Merry Christmas all! Stay safe and stay warm!

>>36959533
>>36959577
>>36959492
>>36959347
Like I'd said in our discussion in the last thread, I'm very much in favor of making Gridlock its own stand-alone setting, perhaps focused on North America as most of Disney's modern and futuristic properties seem to be set there. Whatever everyone thinks we should do I will happily go along with, but in my opinion there would just be too much of a technological and thematic gap between Gridlock and Core/Classic for an integrated setting to be the best expansion it can be.

>Core/Classic: Fantastical adventure and a focus on magic with a bit of superscience thrown in.
>Gridlock: Punky and pulpy, and a focus on superscience with a bit of magic thrown in.
>>

Spoilers below for Wreck-It Ralph, incase you haven't seen it.

That's Turbo, the character that would go on to become the main antagonist known as "King Candy" in Wreck-It Ralph. After the Sugar Rush was installed in Litwak's Family Fun Center & Arcade, Turbo infiltrated the racing game and broke its coding so that he could take Vanellope Von Schweetz' place as ruler of Candyland. This is some artist's interpretation of how that happened.

I'm no storyteller or GM, but I'd just like to throw in a suggestion regarding the potential inclusion of the Galactic Empire into Gridlock.

If, and I mean IF, we decide to include the Empire as a faction, then, personally, I think they are something that should be saved as a mid-game twist.
Initially, from the campaign's start, players would hear some hints about the Empire (whispers from alien pirates and refugees, reports of Evil Emperor Zurg's forces being bulldozed by something bigger), and then, at a point in the campaign where the players are starting to defeat some Kings(?), and things are looking on the up and up...

BOOM. Empire, out of fucking nowhere. I just think it would make for a great game-changer, flipping the campaign on it's head and forcing the players to contend with this far greater threat.

On a side note, the Emperor would need some motivation NOT to just immediately blow the Earth up with the Death Star.

But that's just my own opinion. What do you think?
>>
So, Gridlock is about the Pixar movies, right?
>>
>>36959533
that's much of the point to the setting, things have been horribly broken and barely kludged together into a functioning whole
>>
>>36960401
Star Wars is not being included, neither is Marvel. The reason for this is that if you include Star Wars it basically becomes a Star Wars game on account of there being so much more to that setting than every other setting in the expansion.
>>
>>36960401
Star Wars like Marvel and Kingdom Hearts should be kept out of DVV(at least for the most part, there's probably one or two minor bits that could be used, like say the Keyblade is one of the only weapons that could harm Cherry Bomb, but could easily tear apart the world if misused such is it's power)
>>
>>36960437
>>36960461

I apologise, I wasn't aware of whether we had reached a verdict on it's inclusion yet.
>>
>>36960401
Christ no no no no

Star wars has enough games devoted to it, and too much development.
>>
>>36956896
Could you please link to it? Or is it gone forever and ever?
>>
>>36960416
I believe it's a 'modern' setting, including stuff from across Disney's movies and TV shows. All toys and video/computer game characters being secretly alive will make things very interesting.
>>
Oh, and all cartoon characters too. I believe Toontown's in, as a kind of a preview of the toon expansion.
>>
>>36960401
There may be a reference here or there or a rumor of an Empire in a galaxy far, far away, but Star Wars is so huge a setting in and of itself that could easily swamp everything else in Gridlock.
>>
>>36956404
>>36956404
are we going with the "lore" idea that the expansion charactes were always in the core (aka xanatos being hidden diplomat for rourke, dusty toys in wild west, ruins of modern new york etc) or that this is a completely different setting.

because i think the lore idea could work, but we will need to elaborate more on the cataclysm because of that.
>>
>>36961572
I think that people at the moment are leaning more toward making it a stand-alone setting with its own cataclysm, but I'm not sure.
>>
>>36961572
Well, the problems with expanding on our current settings include:

Making the fates of the villains canon (who died, who survived, who was redeemed) we could fill that gap with the DTP, but also encourage players and GM to use previous campaigns to influence.

Second, we have to explain WHY the new gridlocked Nations have arose, and also why some of them are even here
>>
File: tourtiere2.jpg (71 KB, 435x328)
71 KB
71 KB JPG
>>36961572
My thoughts on the matter are that the modern-future expansion is merely Churned Up Bog repeating or recycling the cataclysm with a different set of villains that he thinks is more likely to result in a permanent victory.

Anyhow, my family has repeated its annual tradition of tourtiere dinner and watching the Muppets Christmas Carol, so I'll be checking out so that I can be up early for stocking stuffers and pancakes tomorrow; after that I'll have a Dakkajet that needs assembling, so don't expect to hear from me too soon.

Gridlocked is tricky because most of the modern/future villains are either based in the USA or have a completely global scope. It might as well be a separate setting entirely.
>>
>>36962158
I agree, just make it a didn't setting.
>>36961896
No offense but this kind gives me a "surprise! Your players in dvv were worthless!" Feeling. In deadlands it was fine for me, bit DVV should be q little brighter than that.. I'd say to make like an alternate timeline where chortling boar brings the modern villains instead.
>>
>>36962689
>didn't setting.
Different setting
>>
>>36962689
Nah, DVVs world is definitely a Noble Dark setting. Letting the players get a permanent good ending is kinda lame in my opinion.

Me thinks were gona need to revive the straw post
>>
maybe we should wait till after the new year to start on Gridlocked
>>
>>36962928
That seems a bit silly, Especially since we have the main game almost done
>>
>>36962856
No need to bring polling into this.

I would say that we ought to leave the final fate of the world up to each individual DM's discretion. Some my want things to stay Noble Dark while others might want things to improve enough to bump the rating up to Noble Neutral.
>>
>>36962856
Seems more grimdark to me, fighting the devil himself doesn't actually matter because things will be JUST AS BAD later when you're dead. And the universe already isn't meant to be this way in the first place.
>>36962942
We still have stating villains of every realm, we could think them up and stat them.
>>
>>36962981
I'd say this is the best way to put this. If they really want a sequel them fine, but I think this should be left up to gms.
>>
>>36962987
Thats not necessary for a beta release though, thats just extra padding.

>>36962981

also, yeah, need a straw poll. Its what got DVV through the magic debacles and original setting creation. Besides, its much easier to keep track and see how people are feeling
>>
>>36962856
Here you go boss
http://strawpoll.me/3258651
>>
>>36963197
I think this is just a bad idea to just straw poll this. Just leave it up to the gm. Like the rumor thing.
>>
>>36963197
>http://strawpoll.me/3258651
Direct continuation is just a little too Grimdark for me. Or if it is a direct continuation, it can't just be 50-100 years later. It's gotta be 4-500 years later, both to account for the increase in technology, and Chernabog gaining enough power to directly influence things again.
>>
>>36963318
Agreed. Just having a sequel doesn't feel good, this is DISNEY, not deadlands.
>>
So, are the Bad Dreams and Bad Bluth expansions supposed to be in Gridlock or will they be separate?
>>
>>36963318
Could we agree to a 1000 years?
>>
>>36963416
Seperate,
>>
>>36963416
Separate, Rasputin for example wouldn't be in grid locked.
>>
>>36963471
Alright, so would they be in the core setting or be their own thing?
>>
>>36963478
I know Rasputin would fit fine I'm the dvv world, bit I don't know them outside of that, I think they're gonna be combined personally though.
>>
>>36963436
Same as>>36963318
That sounds very reasonable. It's long enough for Tech Level to go way up, and for Chernabog's power to slowly return.
>>
>>36963492
>>36963478
>>36963471
I remember here was talk a long while ago about having him roaming Chernobog's domain or forming some sort of deathcult thereabouts, but that idea may have been shelved.
>>
>>36963518
Thousand years sounds Disney as Fuck, plus its the perfect amount of time for heros to turn into distant legends, The Villains to fade into myth and maybe even have Cherno mostly forgotten

And who knows, maybe Technology could hold the key to beating Chernobog once and for all
>>
>>36963561
>>36963518
Again, this kind of thing sounds like deadlands instead of Disney, what's wrong with leaving this up to gms to decide?
>>
>>36963561
Yeah, 1000 years sounds like the best idea we've got.
>>
>>36963561
>>36963530
>>36963518
We would still have to think up and explain what happens to all the DVV Core countries in that intervening 1,000 years unless we used "and they all faded into obscurity" as a generic blanket statement.
>>
>>36963616
Yeah, feels like we'd also miss out on some good villains that we can easily transition into the modern edition like Rourke and Faliciar.
>>
>>36963631
I'd assume most of them would either be toppled by revolution or fuck off into obscurity until Cherno Alpha came back.
>>
>>36963616
Agreed. I'm the guy who proposed the 500 years, but honestly, the separate setting is really the better option.
>>
>>36963592
But its a bloody expansion man. It's not a expansion if we set it in a brand new setting, its basically a another stand alone. Its like calling 40k a expansion of Warhammer Fantasy.
>>
>>36963651
Agreed, Either fluff it with cherno beta picking these villains instead, or have some crazy mad science tech reason.
>>
>>36963671
No, this is like having rogue trader and dark heresy at most.
This is the same spirit and mechanics, with just different villains and setting traits. Having Grimhilde's kingdom replaced by Turbo's cyberspace doesn't make this a different game.
>>
>>36963651
>>36963674
I'd be alright with same setting if Cherno was destroyed in the first setting, but some mad science shit brought him back in the future.
Some possibilities:
Dr. Jumba could have been trying to make some new genetic monster using the demon as a template.
Xanatos is all about digging up the past, could have some ancient ritual unleash Cherno again.
CLU/MCP attempted digital mapping of Cherno, resulting in a digital demon that unleashed itself upon the world.
>>
>>36963631
Actually, I'm actually of the opposite mind and have been suggesting a separate and stand-alone setting for Gridlock.

>>36959727
As I'd said earlier, the differences between Classic and Gridlock aren't just temporal and technological, but also thematic. Splicing them all together in a way that will feel satisfying, even with a lengthy timeskip may be far more difficult than starting with a fresh slate, Chernobog or no Chernobog.
>>
>>36963745
Or what about having the original people who banished Chernabog not know that it doesn't last forever.
>>
Let me just say that I'm very glad that we can all have this discussion in a rational and friendly manner. You've all been great to work with in this regard.
>>
>>36963745
... huh, didn't think I'd be as okay with this as I am.
That's a cool idea that allows this to be a sequel but doesn't make this struggle meaningless.
>>36963753
Yeah, I'll admit not many others could still fit, but those two were on the cusp of modern, I think Rourke would fit just time in grid lock, possibly better than dvv.
>>36963773
That's retarded.
Sorry, I don't man it, but I think this makes chernabog frankly unbeatable, and I'd rather not have another diablo situation where no victory over him matters in the long run and you might as well have not done anything.

I mean mean.
I just really dislike the notion of chernabog just getting up and making DVV's sacrifices and struggles irrelevant.
>>
>>36963864
I hadn't meant it to be quite like that, so thanks for the alternate perspective
>>
>>36963886
You're welcome. To be honest.I thought be totally against a sequel idea but >>36963745 Has some ideas I like.
>>
>>36963927
Maybe have the original banishment be permanent, until somebody from Gridlock undoes it accidentally(?)
>>
>>36963864
I know exactly what you mean. In a Noble Dark setting, despite how horrible things are, the hopes, dreams and struggles of the heroes actually MEAN something. As a DM running such a setting you need to at least give your characters and players the chance to feel like their sacrifices actually helped to improve the world.

>>36963745
As silly as this sounds, what if the heroes' defeat of Chernobog in the Classic world didn't kill him, but just shoved him into the universe next door where he tried his trick again with the modern and futuristic properties?
>>
>>36963954
Perhaps, maybe Xanatos screws it up or something.
>>
>>36963745
I like the Xanatos Jones idea.
>>
>>36963957
Exactly, I think the big thing about nobledark is that it sucks, but the sacrifices matter and can make things better.
>>
Hey, I was wondering if instead of having Japan being a side note in core we could just take Stuido Ghibli villains and put them on the islands, with maybe some Antlantean trading posts and shit on the outskirts.
>>
>>36964042
Ghibli isn't even close to Disney-esque though.
>>
Damn, public opinion on this is flip-floppity as hell. I still support something along the line of what Ghost wrote a while back, where we had previous heroes seal/banish/something Chernoborgarroarg for any 'modern' expansion, and either being dead and leaving behind artifacts/legends or being alive in some form and just no longer being protagonists for whatever reason.
Remember we still need 3 more kings statted up.

>>36964042
This has already been discussed.
>>
>>36964090
Has it? Sorry for bringing it up.
>>
>>36964101

Yeah, Studio Ghibli was originally canon but they were removed for not fitting in with the general nobledark theme.
>>
>>36964090
Yes, but my big problem with this is that this kinda makes the heroes of the original dvv irrelevant and their victory hollow, along with the implication that this generations don't matter any mute than that.
>>
>>36964130
Well, not in particular. Saying that Chernobog had a backup plan of some sort that let him not be completely killed/only banishwarped away doesn't make it any less nobledark. It's Disney anyway, continuity and timelines barely ever make perfect sense anyway. The heroes would still be big damn heroes, and maybe were able to seal off Europe or something against him coming back there to account for the focus on the U.S./Japan.
>>
>>36963972
>>36964001
>>36963957
>>36963954
>>36963745
You know what? Xanatos is the kind of cocky genius who WOULD TOTALLY try that kind of bullshit, like reviving/pulling him from another dimension and then expect him to obey him. This especially makes sense if he was able to keep all the Gargoyles under his command, since they would probably know all about the big shadowy bastard.
>>
Given all the family activities I've got tomorrow, I'm going to need to turn in now. Whatever the outcome of the Gridlock setting decision, I'm sure that it will all turn out for the best. It's been great working with you all again on another great thread.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all of you and yours!
>>
>>36964230
I just don't see the advantage of having it be a sequel instead of its own take on the idea.
It feels like that constrains the setting.
If we have to make this a sequel I'd rather the sell if him somehow be broken or something.
>>
Merry Christmas, you glorious bastards.
>>
>>36964244
Agreed, have this mess be his fault.
>>
>>36964130
BUT it does make sense if Cherno was sealed away, meant to be locked away forever, only for a foolish new comer to awaken the dark lord! That way, its not that the heros were incompentent, its that the newer villains were fools in the first place
>>
>>36964130
>>36964272
>sealing away an ancient evil supposedly forever, restoring multiple kingdoms to their former glory, building an infinitely better world, (if we assume dtp is the generic/'canon' heroes, melting a literal ice queen's heart), killing multiple dark gods, dragging back souls from hell, restoring a religion, and just generally saving the world ten times over in the face of fucking satan
>not doing much
>>
>>36964296
>>36964290
>>36964244
I support the old heroes being big damn heroes and Xantos being a retard.
>>
>>36964272
But if we don't include SOME sort of tie in to the original DVV setting, then its no longer a expansion.
>>
>>36964296
That's different from what I heard, the thing I'm against is "lol chery blog gets up sheet x years."
>>36964348
Except if he just gets up later, then everything is gonna go to sit anyway, meaning they did buying in the long run.
>>
>>36964373
Chernabog can still cause it, have him tend towards the modern villains instead.
>>
>>36964367
I support it as well, Xanatos is the kind of genius who would dare take that kind of Risk. Remember, this is the guy who took the advice of a ancient demon lady about a giant cursed castle supposedly filled with undying demon warriors
>>
>>36964381
The obvious solution is they DID kill Cherrylord, but with his last vestige of power threw an ancient arcane tome into the ends of the earth, which someone eventually found and revived just the littlest fragment of Churns, and nutured him back to a point where he could start fucking up the world again because they are retarded or something. Also, again assuming the DTP heroes are the 'canon' heroes, we can assume that they've totally restored the fuck out of Europe and have sealed and warded the shit out of it against Chernos, which is why he no longer has any influence there in the modern one.

I would say they are most definitely big damn heroes who helped a whole lot of shit in the long run, but couldn't stop humanity in general from being stupid.
>>
>>36964473
That could work, I'd be fine with that.
>>
>>36964402
But that still doesn't make sense if we are going with the sealing idea. Who would have sealed him in the first place?

>>36964381
But thats the brilliance of the sealing idea. Its not Cherry bomb getting up, its the new villains fault that this happen. It shifts the blame from the old heros to the new villains.

>>36964402

Hell, it would still make sense if we wanted to pull new nations in via magic. Cherno, seeing the usefulness of technology over fickle magic, pulls in more and more scientific worlds to overlap or ripping worm holes into space.
>>
>>36964568
I like >>36964473. This answers most everything.
>>
>>36964473
I think the idea of the DTP being stand ins is a good one, incase the GM wants players to hop in. But having a nice, peaceful europe is something I don't like. There has to be a better reason why no one is coming from in or out of Europe.
>>
>>36964612
>>36964473 here,
Isn't that what I just said?
>>
>>36964613
You would have to come up with a pretty damn good reason for why that wold be. DTP is generally our 'canon' for this but like one anon said shouldn't be put in as hard canon, but rather a solid suggestion that works that the GM can change around if he's run a game of vanilla before and wants his player's heroes in or something. But about the actual fluff for it, you really would need a good reason for a quiet Europe if you didn't want it peaceful, since the heroes of old have transferred out all the tyrannical regimes there into peaceful, orderly happyplaces and likely sealed and warded it to hell. On top of all that, we know one of them (Sverd) would probably still be alive and in a position of very high power as Royal Consort to be peacekeeping, so you can't say that "everything collapsed 50 years after ye olde heroes died".
>>
>>36964739
Perhaps Cherno pulls a Alantis and sinks it beneath the earth?
>>
>>36964840
That works.
Maybe Cherno gets the drop on Europe, and overloads the now wide spread Crystal network, making the sinking of alantis a unplug bath plug compared to a whirlpool
>>
>>36964960
>wide spread crystal network
>europe

How stupid do you think the heroes are
>>
>>36964960
So hes basically pulling the Dark One's counterswing from the Wheel of Time? I'm okay with this.
>>
>>36965020
I dunno, roll for the DTPs combined intelligence, TN is 109
>>
>>36965020
They won't be around forever.
>>
>>36964960
I doubt anyone would be using crystal networks, especially widespread ones across all of Europe, unless they truly and well went full retard. That shit is, like, powered off suffering.
>>
>>36965082
Sverd and Mary might be
>>
>>36965090
Since when is the Crystal network the painternet?
>>
>>36965020
Well, 4/6 of the heros all from Europe, so they would probably start there. Now, lets take a look at the team itself

>Knight with a chivilry and ice fetish
>little trickster girl with a golden heart
>A kooky old greek boxer whos taken a few hits to the head
>A alantean mechanic who is pretty nice
>A king dinosaur whos doing his best
>Rough and tough Sheriff

If the crystals can be made relatively fast, it seems Europe would be first, and therefore most wide spread use of Crystals aside from Alantis
>>
>>36965090
Uh, what? No, its the collective emotions of all the users. Where did you get that idea?
>>
I don't like the idea of everyone using Atlantean crystal weapons and buildings and crystals all that just because I think it looks fucking retarded and I hate their architecture an design, but I guess it could work if we assume Europe had sunk or something. Killing off like, a billion people and destroying all the major centers of the world is a MASSIVE event and we shouldn't handle it lightly. I'm not sure if I like the idea of just destroying every nation from Iceland to Greece because so much of Disney is centered in Europe, but can't think of another way to explain Europe not helping out.
>>
Why not just isolate North America through some kind of techno-magic barrier?
>>
>>36965335
I like this idea better than destroying an entire continent
>>
>>36965335
North America AND Japan.
I like this more than just sinking Europe. Would also allow for more interactions with the outside world/stealing the old hero's stuff and advice.
>>
>>36965359
>>36965360
Thats silly though. Whats stopping the now peaceful, and stronger, good rest of the world from simply up and stomping chernobog back into oblivion? If most of the heros are Inmortal, its now going to be even easier for the former heros to bust down the weakened chernobogs gate, and lock him back up.

And technology isn't goning to save him, especially since Alantis would most likely be even greater then before. Also, having a barrier doesn't explain how space fairers can just hop in and out?

Cherno NEEDS to neutralize the good. This isn't a option. He simply can't and wont be content to simply play around with his new toys while the good guys get ready to curb stomp him. No, Europe has to go, and the sinking seems like the best balance of threat removal and victory conservation
>>
>>36965554
If DTP is our base, we know 3/6 of the heroes are certainly mortal, and 2/6 can be ruled either way. The only one who is almost certainly not ded is Sverd. All we really need is for Chernurgle to lock out Elsa/Sverd and the technomagic barrier instantly becomes viable. No matter how many soldiers the happy little regimes of Europe send at Chernobog's upstart dominion, they can't do shit cap'n. So instead, he bides his time, drilling up soldiers and creating his new oppressive regimes in Japan and the U.S. for preparation to go out and kill everything else, the various armies of those tyrants crushing everything and stepping over whatever wards and protections the rest of the world has.
Everything falls into place fine. All that we need is some logical reason why the only heroes we actually know are still alive aren't helping out.
>>
>>36965554
Cherno's biggest mistake was being obvious, making himself a target, and I think he will have realised it. I frankly doubt that he would make an appearance at all until his control over his new puppets is really threatened.

I see the new merge as more subtle than the last great slamming of universes together. Bring individuals into this world, carefully shape their environment so that they grow into the villains they were and then quietly help them along from behind the scenes. Something that looks more like the rise of Fascism or Communism than entire evil empires appearing overnight. The Techno-magical barrier could even be their doing rather than Cherno's, at least directly.
>>
>>36966122
This doesn't explain why Sverd/Elsa or whatever other heroes GM chooses to put in/keep alive haven't just crushed the uprising villains. We need a method to keep them out of the Americas/Japan, and one that can be used on any old heroes the GM transfers.
>>
>>36965701
>>36966163
It's magic. Ain't gotta explain shit.
In all seriousness though, this is a tough question. We can't just handwave it as freezing the heroes or whatever since they already beat Chernobog once, so maybe we have it as one of the villains creating something that can target a very small number of very specific people and hold them in suspended animation, or something similar that would stop them from interfering. I'm not very familiar with many of the films being put in, is there something like that?
>>
>>36963197
it's missing the option to integrate the stuff into the current setting with no time skips involved, which is still the best way to handle it in my opinion
>>
>>36966728
No. No, it really isn't. Why can't we just put Gridlock in its own setting?
>>
>>36966728
>>36966790
Because making it a sequel is cooler and more entertaining than just dumping all the current settings into one great pile. It's a lot more interesting if it's thought of as a sequel with all the kinks worked out, like we're still trying to do with >>36965701
>>36966163
>>
>>36966826
I think if not making Gridlock self-contained, it should be a timeskip. We've been going months under the assumption that Gridlock wouldn't be integrated. Why change it at the last minute?
>>
>>36966849
What do you mean a timeskip? How big of one? We've been pretty much assuming there's gonna be 100~ year time difference between the 'vanilla' and 'gridlock'.
>>
>>36966895
>>36966849 was referring to >>36966728, who thinks that it would be easier to throw out the old map and alliances to accommodate a host of new factions and make everyone else look like ass-grabbing dirt farmers.
>>
MERRY CHRISTMAS GUYS!

Now, with regards to the current discussion, all this debating about magically cutting off the rest of the world and past heroes being frozen BECAUSE is precisely why I think Gridlock being a direct sequel to DVV is a really bad idea.

With regards to the whole US and Japan argument, I think there is a fairly good way to resolve this; have the rest of the world be overrun by aliens, such as Zurg's legions and the various alien pirates and refugees.
This also helps the Kings (are we still calling them that for Gridlocked?) justify their rule in their own regions, plus it also introduces the potentially interesting dynamic of the villains being publically united against the alien hordes, whilst privately conducting a shadowy cold war of espionage against one another (with the occasional open skirmish).
>>
An integrated Core-Gridlock setting just makes everything so much more complicated and confused than it needs to be.

I think that could work fairly easily, and explains most of their existence. Perhaps we can also include that Europe is also dealing with invading xenos , and is taking the blunt of the assault.

So the Invaders would be

Galactic Federation
Evil Emperor Zurg
Long John Silver

Any more we can think of?
>>
>>36970161
Didn't someone write earlier that the Federation was dismantled or something, or are we going with the whole show of force/peacekeeping angle?
>>
>>36970226
By which I mean they are invading for those reasons. Sorry if I didn't clarify.
>>
>>36970226
Well, even the event hamster Veil wins, the galactic federation is still under his control. So, I imagine its still around, albeit it incredibly weakend.

But, to be honest, hamster veil wasn't all that great of a villain, so I'd rather just have it be Gantu doing a coop, and his next target is earth.

I might try to work on Mother Madeline and Al-Bahdros (or whatever he is called) later. Any suggestions?
>>
>>36971752
As I recall, Al Bahdros was a rich, well-equipped pirate out for adventure and fame and Mother Madeline was an old madwoman leading a crew of the deranged.

Al Bahdros might be best portrayed as Sensible/Smart or Sensible/Charismatic while Mother Madeline might be best portrayed as Charismatic/Agile or just straight-up Charismatic given her almost supernatural "cat-herding" abilities she demonstrates with the pirates who follow her.

AL-Bahdros' Traits and Powers probably ought to represent how well-funded and how technically proficient he is as a fighter and leader, while Mother Madeline's Traits and Powers should show how she's a literally crazy, "outside the box" thinker and fighter who PERHAPS has mildly prophetic powers.
>>
>>36971928
I plan on writing up a trait I'm going to call "Utter Unpredictability" for Mother Madeline. Unfortunately, there's a chance that this thread could end before I get back from a party I have to go to later. If that is the case, I'll post the stuff in the next thread.

Clarisse is an intimidatingly tall and a heavily muscled thing with shaggy fur, menacing horns, powerful claws and vicious fangs, who's personality is best described as that of a beaten dog. Having spent nearly her entire life locked up out of sight in a basement cell with only old fairytale picture books for company she has very little idea about how to act normally around people, at which times her beastly nature tends to come out.

>Belle's beastling bastard daughter still feels something of her mother's love even if she's been hidden away and forgotten.

You may want to specify how long the penalty lasts, whether that's a scene, a day, a week, or a year. As of now, it looks like an eternal penalty that will never fade. (Unless that's what your going for, which seems a bit harsh.)

Also, merry Christmas everyone!
>>
>>36976815
Merry Christmas, Ponderous! It was definitely not meant to be an eternal penalty, but one lasting till the end of the scene. However, an alternative would be that it lasts until an ally gives her some sort of pep talk with a Persuasion check to calm her down again.

You know, this pic got me thinking: drawing an animal head it can express human emotions in a way humans can recognize without making it look too human is one of the harder challenges for an artist, isn't it? The fact that our resident drawfag can pull it off makes me thankful that he's taken interest in this project.
>>
>>36978638
You're right. It's one of the hallmarks of Disney's style and he does very well in this regard. It's been really great seeing these characters drawn up in a style reminiscent of the source material.

I've always been the sort that only learns two things really well: interesting works of fiction (and associated lore), and things that involve meaningful calculations (basically, the lower half of STEM). But there are a lot of things that fit into neither category that interest me (linguistics for instance), and I think I can add this to the list. What features on a drawn animal let it show human emotion without making it look human?
>>

>>36978790
If I recall correctly there are schools of study in both the arts and sciences that deal with how human beings convey emotion through facial cues and how those cues can be mimicked by things like robots and cartoon animals. If I can recall correctly, there is a bit of art team commentary for WALL-E in which they discuss the title character and how they wanted him to be both completely robotic but still expressive.

I think it comes down to having expressive brows, big eyes and and an expressive mouth.
>>
>>36978928
Geez, it seems obvious once you point it out. The eyes tell you where someone is looking, and the brows and mouth are really the only parts of the face that move at all.
>>
File: uncanny_graph_blog.jpg (46 KB, 500x322)

>>36978790
It's really just the question of the uncanny valley. As a creature is given recognizably human elements, humans start to latch on to those and humanize the character. This is where you get your Disney animals, your WALL-E, and mentally giving a Roomba a personality because of the way it keeps trying to get in between the legs of a chair, fails, and doesn't give up.

However, as you give something more human characteristics, it goes from being a non-human with human features to a human with things that are just wrong. This is where you have things like corpses, Realdolls, and bad CG.

The key here is just having the right balance of human features to trigger empathy from humans without reaching the point of being a human who looks "wrong".

Reposting Ice Anna again to get more opinions, took the suggestions from earlier about increasing her ability to take damage due to being made of magic ice. Rather than upping her strikes I went with a trait that increases Prevent Harm against non-magical sources instead.

Name: Anna II Icicle Boogaloo
Species: Ice Golem/Human
Role: Ice Pop(Charming Gal)
Tier: Zero

Stats-
Robustness: 7
Agility: 9
Intelligence: 9
Sensibility: 3
Charm: 12(4d6k3)

Will: 3

Strikes 3+2x

Role-
Being a fast talker and a fast singer, he gets one extra Move each turn that he can use to roll on Deceit, Music, Intimidate, or Persuasion, but only against Mooks.

Traits-

-Ice Golem
This unit is a creation of Elsa; it is immune to non-magical mental effects that would alter its allegiance, and receives a +3 bonus on any checks that would give it the means to fulfil one of its master’s commands.

-Mystical Resiliance
+5 Prevent Harm against non-magical sources.

-Hakuna Matata!
+2 to resist on any sort of mental distress with Endure.

-Zealous Champion
Pick a cause(Restoring Elsa's sanity). You cannot be dissuaded from your cause by Illusions or social skills unless the other party spends a will.

-Land of the Midnight Sun
Bonuses to survival and travel in cold regions, for obvious reasons.

Powers-

Rock and Roll will Never Die: Spend a will point; Apply Music against Tin-Ear characters with only a -5 in effectiveness!

Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?: 'Anna' can shape and manipulate ice and snow with relative ease allowing her to safely manipulate the frozen population of Arendalle. This power is only usable while Elsa is 'calm'.

Skills-
Acrobatics: 3
Academics: 3
Prevent Harm: 4(+9)
Endure: 4
Persuasion: 3
Travel: 3
Music: 8

>13 strikes for an average party

That's... a lot for a literal ice sculpture of a princessly-educated teenager.
>>
>>36979259
>>36979319
Yes, I'd say that it may be a bit better to give her strikes like a player (just a static amount, starting at 3, modifiable with traits maybe) rather than giving her a y=mx+b formula like a Villain.
>>
>>36979259
I think it looks pretty good, and I think that we could probably stand to use more potential NPC allies at different power levels like her, Clarisse and Mulan.

>>36979319
She may be an ice sculpture, but she's a living ice sculpture imbued with magical power.

>>36979345
I made the same mistake in giving Clarisse a formulaic strike number. I think that in both cases, boosting the character's number of strikes slightly beyond normal human levels might work out best.
>>
>>36979319
>>36979345
>>36979537
I'm having trouble switching over to showtunes from some other stuff I'm writing, sorry about that. Crunch-wise though, can we talk about PC strikes for a second? I'm feeling that they're pretty damn fragile. Right now PCs can dish out a ton of damage and take down lots of mooks or lackeys and deal lots of damage to villains/kings, but they are VERY fragile. Even with a 5-man party, everyone has only a handful of strikes even at hero-tier, and go down with a couple of good hits from any serious villains. From the campaigns, it seems it's really very easy to down PCs, even though they're dealing out a bunch of damage a round. What does everyone else think about this?
>>
>>36979602
Not having been able to catch the playtests myself first-hand, the number of strikes the player characters have at their disposal have always struck me as a being little on the low side. I'm not sure how to fix the situation though without taking away the sense of struggle and strife that is key to both Noble Dark and Disney settings.
>>
>>36979602
We do seem to have made a game of all glass cannons. Even a Tough Guy is still pretty fragile at higher levels. Also, I think Tough Guys need some way to try to actually tank, as I've seen quite a few instances of smart enemies just going straight for the weaker Nimble or Charming guys, ignoring the heavily armored guy who can take hits pretty well. Maybe a taunt of some sort?

As for improving the glass cannon nature of most players, I think we can just change the amount of strikes they have at different levels and it could work pretty well. Maybe make the default 3 strikes at Zero, 5 at On-A-Roll, and either 7 or 10 for Hero. (I wouldn't know, I haven't played a Hero game yet)
>>
>>36979918
>>36979837
>>36979602
It must be hard to find that balance where the PCs aren't too fragile and the combat still feels threatening.
>>
>>36980395
Agreed. Dark Heresy is one of the better ones I've seen, mixing cover and armor with the potential for massive overkill with good rolls.
>>
>>36980422
Maybe having the number of strikes scale to the enemy the PCs are fighting? Or is that stupid?
>>
Going to call it quits for tonight, but I wanted to bump the thread and wish everyone a Merry Christmas one last time. See you all tomorrow!

Okay, trying my hand at making a villain. This is the Headmistress of Zwietracht Academy, the nightmare school that Hannah escaped. Frau Wassermolch is intended to be a top tier 'Next stop the Kings' villain.

As always I'm happy for critique.

—Traits—

-Yes, Headmistress
All mooks and lackeys in villain’s presence are immune to persuasion/intimidation.

-Trusssssssssst me
+2 bonus on Deceive rolls if there target actively distrusts the speaker

-All Will Be Well
+3 when trying to calm down or convince a frightened character

-Don't You Disrespect Me, Little Man!
+3 to Intimidate if you have taken a Social strike in this Situation.

-Tin Ear
Immune to all effects of music, beneficial and harmful.

-Nobility
+2 to Persuasion and Intimidate so long as you follow the nobility code of your own culture.

Power of Rock: Music affects characters with the ‘Tin Ear’ trait, but all rolls are halved.

---Powers---
Devil’s Fifth: Villain pays three will points and plays a Demonic Chord on their Instrument. Any PC who is not deaf suffers one strike. Characters with Tin Ear can roll to Avoid Harm. If a PC can make a Charm+Music Check that beats the Villain’s, then the Villain suffers one strike.

Reflection Recover: If within clear view of a mirror, Villain can spend turn to recover 1d6 will points.

Siren Sonata: Villain spends a will point to make a music check against PC. PC must roll Endure+Sensibility against Villain roll, if PC fails, they are ‘entranced’ for one round. Entranced PCs can only make another Endure+Sensibility attempt to break free. If Siren Sonata is used against an Entranced PC, that PC becomes ‘Enchanted’ and an ally of the Villain, and will take actions against the party, until they successfully break free. Enchanted PCs get +1 to their Endure+Sensibility rolls every turn they are Enchanted
- - -

I can't draw, but if there's any artists, she's dressed in a black and white, ruffled dress with a thin purple trim, a mirrored brooch, a pair of piece-nez sunglasses covering her eyes, and a blood red violin in her grip. Her white hair is pulled back in a tight pony tail and she screams 'Use the Rod, Beat the Child' in her manner.

Atlantean Writefag checking in. I hope you all have had a wonderful Christmas, and stuffed yourselves silly with food while enjoying good company and great presents.

Christmas special fic is done--though honestly three hours later than I thought it would be because the lion's share of my day was spent enjoying a couple new books and ham. It's a long one--16 pages in Word but ties off loose ends and generally will be the last I see of these characters for awhile while Thach and her team fight their way through frozen wastes.

All that being said, would you rather I just post as much as I can this thread and just finish it in the next, or just wait until new thread and post it all there? I don't mind it either way.

Aside from the extra strike, Strong Guys don't have any advantage over Nimble Guys in combat, and for everyone else there's absolutely no difference between using Robustness or Agility (yes, agile characters tend to wear lighter armor, but if you get creative you can justify armor that is light while still providing a high bonus). That said, I am in favor of strikes going up with tier.
>>
Good morning gentlemen!

I would say to post the story wherever you see fit. It would be a great way to help round out this thread, or you could save it for the next in order to get a bit more exposure. Personally, I'm eager to read it, so the sooner it's posted the better for me.

Oh. he's a villain, but one that believes wholeheartedly that what he is doing is right for France. A whole LOT of Gypsies and other "heretics" have already been executed, and he's actively hunting down the rest.

Both crunch-wise and fluff-wise she seems like an utter nightmare for the PCs so you've really succeeded in your aim here. I remember Hannah describing the Zwietracht Academy as the place where art goes to die, and I do believe that Frau Wassermolch here seems to be the killer.

Mother Madeline:
Just Looney Enough to Work: Spend a Will Point. When facing a skill check, this unit may replace the necessary skill with another skill of a higher level so long as the new skill is chosen at random and roleplayed as an act of mad inspiration or troll logic.

Can't Argue with Crazy: Spend a Will Point. Disregard any social strikes (Deceit, Persuasion etc.) made against this unit for the next X turns.

Nothing to Lose: Spend a Will Point. +15 to Melee, -5 to Prevent Harm.

Al-Bahdros:
Throw Money at the Problem: Spend a Will Point. This unit throws a fist-full of gold coins, granting +10 Deceit for the purposes of a distraction or +10 Ranged as a physical attack.

Tutored in the Arts of War: Spend a Will Point. This unit may call upon a fighting technique or naval maneuver he's learned to avoid taking a Strike. However, doing so also incurs a -1 Prevent Harm penalty that is cumulative over the course of the scene.

Bribe: Spend a Will Point. When this unit has one Strike remaining, he may offer the PCs his flagship or an equivalent amount of gold as payment for his life or his freedom.
>>
>>36986203
Wow, those are actually great. I'll be posting Mother Madeline's profile in ~5 mins.
>>
>>36985922
He was actually inspired by a rich and pompous captain character from the Aladdin animated series named "Al-Batross." I changed the name when I wrote up his KLR a while back to not be quite so obviously ridiculous.
>>
>>36986220
That's pretty funny. Also, I know it isn't in any Disney media, but I'd love to make a Viking Pirate too. I'll leave that up to y'all as to whether that's a good idea
>>
>>36986220
Aha, Disney puns.
>>
>>36986277
>Viking Pirate
Bit of a redundant phrase there. Anyhow, the seas around the Norse lands are frozen solid thanks to a certain snow queen and her sister with cripplingly low Sensibility, and Iceland and Greenland are under Atlantean control. Unable to get home, all the vikings that are at sea must be desperate, raiding not for loot and glory but for mere survival.
>>
>>36986342
Exactly. As I remember the ones in Aladdin were pretty darn blatant and groan-worthy, so I changed Al-Bahdros' name slightly to disguise the pun and make it sound a bit more Middle Eastern to my admittedly non-Arabic understanding ears.
>>
>>36986354
The can join up with Mother Madeline's crew of marauding maritime misfits.

And I love the Annas' cripplingly low Sensibility, as you put it. Ice Anna's dopey, guileless personality along with her blissful ignorance and unfortunate gallows humor make her a really amusing character for the PCs to come across.
>>
>>36986443
Mother Madeline's isn't going to be much better. She's pretty much an actually crazy, little old crazy cat lady.

Utterly Unpredictable: All Insight rolls against Mother Madeline suffer a -8 penalty. No one ever knows what she is doing.
Sea Legs: Men and women of the sea are used to living and working aboard ship, and as such have adapted their mannerisms accordingly. Whenever aboard any sort of watercraft, +2 to Athletics, Melee, and Brawl.
The Rum is Never Gone: Being a pirate is a hard lifestyle, oftentimes needing a hard drink to make it a little more tolerable. A Man or Woman of the Sea is able at any moment to find or produce from their person a flask or bottle of alcohol upon need.
My Kitties: Similar to the stereotypical “Crazy-Cat-Lady”, Mother Madeline loves to hoard things, in this case, ships and crews (or Kitties, as she calls them). Mother Madeline must make a Sensibility check with a TN of 15. before any naval combats, or she will order her men not to sink the ship or kill crew, so that she can collect them.

Noelle gave the bus driver a small wave as she hopped onto the sidewalk. She looked down at her smartwatch. 8:22 AM, December 16th, 20XX. She frowned, making a mental note to have the techies check out the calendar function. Her vision refocused upward on the skyscraper, admiring the pulsing lines of color rocketing up the sides of the steel and glass superstructure. She looked herself over on one of the building’s hyper-reflective panels. Blue pinstripe jacket with matching buttoned vest and long pencil skirt. Freshly pressed dress shirt and, as an accent, a yellow neckerchief. Frameless glasses with flat silver accents. Straight chestnut hair pulled back into a milkmaid’s braid, with no small amount of help from Kendra. She made a mental note to get her roommate something nice as she stepped through the revolving glass door and into the regional HQ’s lobby.

The part-time Super offered the front desk receptionist a small wave and a “Happy holidays” as she moved across the lobby floor to the line of elevators lining the back wall, sliding into one towards the middle like a ghost. Her thumb hovered over the floor to “Applied Sciences” as as she heard a voice call out from the beyond the receptionist’s desk. “Hold the elevator, please!” The voice was noticeably feminine, with a hint of an accent that Noelle couldn’t figure out. She looked to see a very tall...something moving through the sea of people filing in and out of the building, startling passers-by as it went along. ‘Tis the season,’ Noelle thought to herself, continuing to have her hand hover over the call panel as the late arrival near blundered through the doorway. “Wooh! Made it!” The woman panted.

Noelle quirked her eyebrow. “You, uh, doing okay there?”

“Sorry,” The woman leaned against the side railing. “Big day today. Couldn’t be late.” She inhaled deeply, her breathing eventually slowing and quieting to a more reasonable pace.

“Um...” Noelle clicked her tongue. “Which floor?”

“Applied Sciences, if you could.”

“Ah—same as me,” Noelle said, pressed the button lightly. The elevator doors snapped shut and the small tube was propelled downward at a speed Noelle thought could be outpaced by a whale falling through the atmosphere.

Noelle took the pause in conversation to size up the woman with her on the trip down. She was tall—six feet at least with the heels, maybe five-seven without. A very cute, very yellow cardigan was kept concealed under the stale folds of a lab coat two sizes too large over the woman’s frame. Sandy blonde hair was pulled into a loose updo, a pair of stray bangs framing her face. Salmon pink-framed glasses accented green eyes that were twisted with inner turmoil. “Did you just fly in?” The woman asked.

“What?” Noelle blinked, before noticing the woman was analyzing her with a ponderous look. “Oh, dammit—no I didn’t actually. I’m, uh,” Noelle trailed off, trying to find the right words. “I’m local to the area—I just rarely get to dress formally, so when I do, I just kinda go a bit...crazy.”

“Oh no no, I didn’t mean it like that!” The other woman’s voice bubbled over. “It’s cute! Very cosmopolitan. You look like a flight attendant at first glance.”

“The neckerchief, right?” Noelle said.

The other woman nodded. “It makes a great accent—where did you find the suit?”

“Custom tailored. My friend knows a guy who came from back East because ‘fill in the blank’: mob problems, fresh air, closure, whatever you like.”

“Ohh, you /have/ to get me his name!”

“One thing at a time, miss; I don’t even know you’re name.”

The woman held out her hand. “Call me Honey.”

“Noelle.” The barista took the scientist’s hand and shook it firmly. “So, uhm, what do you do here, Honey?”

“I managed to nab a research assistant’s internship at ENCOM while studying at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology.”

“SFIT? You a STEM major?”

“Chemistry.” Honey said. “What about you?”

Noelle laughed. “Oh, do I still look that young? No, Honey, I’m sorry—I got out of the college game awhile ago.”

“You’re joking!” Honey gasped. “How many years ago?”

“What year did the Bears win the Super Bowl?”

“2027—why?”

“It was the year before that happened. I majored in Kinesiology, but right out of uni I couldn’t find work. I drifted around for two years, picking up various hobbies and odd jobs—highlights include crab fishing in Alaska and driving an ice cream truck. Then I decided I needed a change of scenery, loaded up everything I had into a beat up campervan, and moved up here. Two days after the move I found myself working as a barista at The Last Drop.”

“Where does ENCOM come into the picture?”

“I’m getting to that.” Noelle said. “Before this gigantic black Freudian nightmare dominated the skyline, ENCOM operated out of a very ratty, very old brick warehouse in the Tenderloin district that I’m pretty sure was used in years past as a BDSM sex dungeon. They put up ads in the local Classifieds for long-term test subjects, citing bountiful compensation and room for expansion. Me, being a struggling Kinesiologist living out of a studio apartment I could barely afford, took them up on their offer. So now, at least twice a month, I come in, test a few new toys the boys if R&D come up with, and leave with a nice paycheck and a clean conscience knowing the world will be a safer place from my feedback.”

“Interesting,” Honey said. “Don’t mean to brag, but I’ve got a research project of my own on the side, too. I help out here, and on my off-time I get to use ENCOM’s facilities for my own projects!”

“What’s the project?”

“The one I’m doing with ENCOM or the personal one?”

“First the latter then the former.”

“Well, the former I can’t talk about at all—defense contracts tend to be covered in all sortsa red tape. The latter, however, is something I’ve been tinkering with for awhile now.”

“Oh?”

“I’ve been working on these small...bomblets, I guess you could call them. Flexible, squishy, but filled with mixtures of various elements. I’ve been able to figure out the mixtures to a ‘t’ and compress them into an aerosol form, but I’m having trouble with the actual delivery method.”

“Which is where Applied Sciences comes to the fore.”

“Precisely!” Honey said. “I’m getting closer to finding an infusable package, but I’m having trouble finding the right material. Glass is too heavy and polymers don’t shatter on hard contact with the target. I’m hoping that the perks to my internship will help me find the breakthrough I’m looking for.”

“And the mixtures? What have you figured out?”

“Hundreds of different combinations. Mixtures that can melt through steel or make stone brittle to the touch. Freezers, immobilizers, dazzlers, dessicators, explosives—the list goes on and on.”

“Sounds like a lucrative defense contract waiting to happen.”

“You think so?” Honey bit her lip. “I was thinking of doing something a bit more...helpful with it.”

“Ah, aid work.” Noelle nodded.

“...kinda sorta, yeah.”

The elevator shuddered as it stopped on the right floor, doors prying open with a hiss. A balding, silver-haired Asian man greeted the two women with a tired smile. “Ahh, Miss Honey. Good morning to you.” A thick accent had been considerably dulled by years of practice.

“Good morning, Doctor Shen!” Honey replied.

“And right on time, Miss Collins.”

“Do the eccentrics always end up down here?” Noelle smirked.

“Either here or in ENCOM Foods,” Shen huffed, leading the girl down another hallway as he clasped his hands behind his back. A large carabiner of keys jingled with each of the man’s steps. The hallway was lined on both sides with metallic plating, sliding blast doors with glass panels showcasing the wonders being developed within. “So how have you been, Miss Collins?”

“Good enough,” Noelle replied, watching a test subject in an orange jumpsuit tentatively pick up an Identity Disk from an adjacent table and, after a few practice swings, toss the disk at a watermelon across the room, slicing the piece of fruit in twain before running away from the now ricocheting razor-sharp discus. “Still serving lattes to stuck-up women and fighting crime when I can.”

“Good to hear.” Shen nodded. “That bank heist you stopped was fascinating to watch unfold live. I would love to see the data from that fight—once we pull it, of course.”

“Well I’m glad you enjoyed watching it—the damn thing ruined my entire day.” Noelle groaned.

“How’s the Combat Skin fitting?”

“A bit snug around the midsection, but other than that pretty well.”

“Have you been shocked through it? Any heat or cold discomfort—ENCOM has been tipped off that our competitors have been developing thermal and cryo-manipulative tech.”

“It insulates well, and I can’t say anything about heat or cold because I haven’t been matched against anyone using it yet.” Noelle watched another test subject hold out a black bar in front of him while squatting, eventually seeing the wireframe of a Light Cycle flicker in and out of existence before solidifying.

“Ah, well.” Shen sighed. “San Fransokyo is a large town and still growing. I have a feeling your Rogue’s Gallery will be expanding soon enough beyond pickpockets and robbers.”

“I got my first taste of supervillainy during the heist,” Noelle quipped. “It dresses like an iPod and listens to dubstep.”

“Yes, we heard news of Guild activity as well.” Shen nodded. “Interesting to see them expanding their operations out west after so long.”

“DownBeat, she called herself.” Noelle rotated her shoulder. “She was wearing this armor that turned the beats of the music into energy pulses—the first bass drop nearly put me through the bank’s wall.”

“Music-based weaponry...?” Shen trailed off. “I will *definitely* need to take a look at that data, then.” The duo stopped before a heavy blast door near the end of the hallway, “LAB 17” chipping from the metal. Shen swiped his keycard and entered in a passcode before receiving an affirmative chime from the door. “If you’d please just get ‘suited up’, we can begin running our diagnostics right away.”

Applied Sciences was buried deep within the companies’ basement levels—a matter of necessity on the company’s part to preserve its secrets from prying eyes and minimize damages in case of catastrophic disasters. The great strides of all of ENCOM’s products were borne from the basement laboratories of the companies’ headquarters spread all around the world: joint projects with Atlantean Engineers were tested in Maryland, biomedical breakthroughs found their start in Shanghai. The San Fransokyo Regional HQ’s main purpose was detailed in the company statement as “providing affordable, potent alternatives for augmentation and optimization of the human form”. Noelle took that to mean “we’re bringing superpowers to the people, one field test at a time.”

Currently, she found herself sealed off in a special “clean room”, with a panel of scientists observing her from behind thick glass. She was in full armor, wires sprouting from her gauntlets and feeding into various pieces of machinery. Still more wires sprouted from her back into the wall behind her. Technicians in sealed suits inspected the connecting points between the gauntlets and boots to the combat skin, still more technicians inspecting the combat skin itself for cracks or visible signs of stress. “Interesting work you’ve been doing over the past few weeks, Miss Collins,” one of the technicians remarked. “That bank robbery was quite the caper.”

“Yeah, well, you know me—some days you go looking for crime, other days the crime finds you.” Noelle shrugged.

“Quite. Shame about the supervillain getting away, though,” another technician said.

“I had other priorities at the moment and didn’t feel like crashing a helicopter in downtown.” Noelle said. “By the way—I did appreciate the power adjustment you guys did last time—really made it easier to regulate the strength of the blasts.”

“The morgue report for that one heister that fell from the bank’s roof was reported to have some of the skin and flesh on his hand melted away with the latex glove covering it,” a female technician quipped.

“It also said he hand four shattered ribs and severe internal trauma,” another technician added.

“Was that from the punch or the fall?” Noelle asked.

“Hard to say.” Shen’s voice came over the room’s loudspeakers. “As expected, radiation isn’t the problem—cleanup is. Those blasts you keep tossing, while powerful, pretty much melt through whatever they hit. Plasma might be a viable alternative if we ever figure out the heat dispersal issues.”

“I rather enjoy the versatility of nuclear power, Doc—if it’s okay with you.” Noelle called back. “I’ve also got a few ideas for upgrades, if you don’t mind.”

“Of course—but as before, we’d like to ask you to avoid unnecessary collateral damage with each fight.” The elderly man adjusted his glasses. “Cleanup is costly, non disclosure settlements moreso.”

“I’ll do my best.” Noelle said.

“Alright, we should be pulling the data from the heist right about...now.” One of the technicians called out, monitoring the uplink feed from a holo-tablet.

“Receiving.” Shen called out.

“Interesting.” One of the technicians said. “Have you started a new physical regimen, Miss Collins? These markers are showing a gradual increase in your physical performance.”

“Nothing much—just some light resistance training and calisthenics. The Combat Skin comes in handy when it comes to my commute.”

“Commute?”

“I do a bit of parkour—you know, running on rooftops, jumping off cranes, sliding down sides of buildings. It helps when getting across the city during rush hour—keeps the senses tuned, too.” Noelle swung on her heels. “The wall-climbing module you guys added last time I visited makes it too easy, so I usually just use the Skin and not the armor systems whenever I’m running late.”

“That would explain these armor activations in a daily pattern,” another technician surmised.

“And noone’s seen you?” Shen’s voice echoed.

“I’ve had a couple close calls with police helicopters, but everyone’s too busy or too sleepy to notice a twenty-something girl running around on rooftops.” Noelle shrugged.

“Just be careful, Miss Collins—prying eyes are everywhere. Last thing we need are fuzzy photos of purported Programs running around the real world.”

“Again—I’ll try my best.”

A small beep emitted from the holo-tablet of the lead technician. “That should be it for the data.” He turned toward Noelle. “You said you had a couple ideas for some upgrades...?”

Noelle could only grin.

I'm thinking much the same as is happening in our own world. Which is to say, not a whole lot. I can't think of any Disney or near-Disney properties that are set there, though it's feasible that there could be expeditions from the various nations in place looking for or studying something.

I know you guys said you don't want toon PCs, but I was thinking about a system to use them regardless if they are players or not.

What I came up with was, a toon is just a template you can add to any standard character, and toons have a pool of Laughter Points instead of a of Will Points.

Toons have a maximum amount of 3 Laughter Points and, unlike Will Points, Laughter Points are not restored each morning. Instead, a toon must find some way to make others laugh to restore his lost Laughter. How many Laughter Points are restored during a performance is up to the Narrator, is based on the quality of your performance, and how receptive the audience is to you. A performance can use any one of your skills as long as you describe how you use it to entertain the audience.
(cont.)
>>
>>36991437
Laughter Points are used to do the things you expect a toon to do and are spent in an amount equivalent to the magnitude of the effect. For example; a toon may spend one point to fit into a space he couldn’t normally, dodge a physical attack by bending his body around the shot or ducking his head into his shirt like a turtle, or store/retrieve an item from hammer-space. Spending two points may allow him to move a manhole from the street to a wall, hover in the air for a few seconds before falling off a cliff, or shift a sailing ship into reverse. Finally, spending three points would allow a toon to, screen transition to a new area close by, survive a large effect that would have otherwise killed him, or saw a tree branch only to have the tree fall away and the branch remain where it is.

A toon who run out of Laughter Points have his colors fade or turn sepia and is treated the as a normal creature of his type until he recovers at least one point. Laughter is hard to come by in the world such as it is, so it is difficult for a toon to function at the same level he did long ago.

Although, some rumors say that legendary toons like The Mouse, The Dog, and The Duck still carry large reserves of Laughter, even today.

It is strong, but when we get to the Toon Expansion this sort of thing is going to be par for the course.

It seems pretty solid to me, and definitely worth checking out once we get to the testing phase. I really like the idea of Cartoon characters NEEDING to act as if there were an invisible audience there beyond the fourth wall somewhere that they had to keep appealing to.

The limits of toon abilities are defined by the Narrator and can be limited as much as you like.
I was realy just listing examples I thought were cool. Could define it as 1pt Push the Rules 2pt Bend the Rules 3pt Break the Rules.

Oh! You could make it so you can only use 1 point while a Zero, 2 On a Roll, 3 as a Hero!

>>36992113
I was actualy thinking they would perform for other NPCs in the game, but your idea works too. At that point no toon would be 'off screen' so to speak.

It's one of those ideas that I've seen around before in several media that feels like it would fit in well with a DVV Terrible Toons expansion. The Fourth Wall is real, and there is an Audience behind it somewhere, even if the Toons themselves would he hard pressed to point them out to you. The Audience is always watching and the Toons are never "off screen" so to speak, even if there are times when the Audience's attention is drawn elsewhere. Toons get their power from appealing to the Audience and to those ends can do nearly anything so long as it's Funny.
>>
>>36993262
We've got to be careful though not to make the expansions too divergent from the core game in terms of mechanics. Still worth playing around with though.

You know, I just though of something. We have Disney and I'm hoping we'll have some Warner Brothers stuff in the Toon expansion. How about we complete the big three of classic cartoon characters with some Hanna Barbera?
>>
>>36997765
we could use elements of this, I for one who like to see The Gang as NPC's for the Toon expansion that have been Broken by Dooms takeover (Fred's leg was melted and he has to use crutches, Shaggy talking to empty air and acting as if it is responding to him etc cetera)

The problem with adding in Hanna Barbera is its characters themselves. They lack teeth compared to the conniving, graceful bastards that make up the villains of these animated films

Realistically, we could only really pull Swat Kats, Jonny Quest, and maybe Scooby Doo, if we're talking about Mystery Incorporated and not the original series. Everything else is either too tame or lacks villains entirely. I mean, the worst after anything from Swat Kats that Hanna Barbera has to offer are a dickish racer that wants the coveted pole position and a park ranger that just wants two dumbass bears to stay away from some parkgoers' food.

Not sure what the status of Dwarves is in the Mirror Kingdom(I think I remember hearing that they are enslaved or something with maybe the Snow White crew acting as a resistance force?) but I though it might be interesting to give them playable stats that differ from the human standard.

Size: Medium(Short but stocky)
Racial Traits:
-Hi Ho, Hi Ho: Reduce Music TN's by 2 at each level.

-It's Off to Work We Go: Choose a skill, when rolling for that skill roll an additional d6

Attribute Bonuses:
Purposed: +2 to any Stat, -2 to any other Stat
what does everyone think?

Good morning gentlemen!

Still can't access the Sup/tg/ page so this may just end up being the first DVV thread not archived there.

I'm not sure about adding Hanna Barbara or a tremendous amount of Warner Brothers properties myself for fear of straying too far from our "Disney as Fuck" ethos, but it's all open for discussion!

>>36999657
the basic premise for HB toons is that they all have something that defines them as a character for example; Shaggy and Scooby, these two have and innate connection that goes beyond their script, yet when Doom took over, He tortured mystery inc. and Dipped Scooby, Something in Shaggy Broke that day and he's never been the same since, another example would be Dick Dastardly, Doom blinded him when he found out what he aspired for and now he cannot get around without Muttley's help

Way I see it, Toons will need a lot more work than even the modern expansion to fit nicely with everything else--mainly because Toons aren't exactly well grounded in logic or physics and don't have a lot of depth to them, given that most of them are indeed lighter fare than what has been tossed around in previous threads.

Bottom line is that it's worth looking in to, but one thing at a time. Core is still in Beta and Gridlock is starting to take a more definite shape. Let's see what we can get done with more grounded realms before exploring the abstract and ridiculous.
