Mmm.
I can't stand seeing her so sullen. It's almost as if she can barely stay asleep.

Gently, she turns over to face me in her sleep. Her breath seems to quicken in pace, and her eyes start rapidly darting from side to side.

It really feels that I should do something to soothe her. Quietly, I lay back down next to her and hug her close.
Her sleep seems to return to the normal, quiet pace that I'm used to. Especially considering that she seems to wrap her arms around me as tightly as she can.

Her newly restful slumber comes to an end, slowly she starts to stir and squirm in my grasp. She groans as she tries to free herself.

"Masami, what are you doing?"
"You looked like you needed some help sleeping."

She grunts in frustration and squirms out from under my grip, sitting up on the bed.
I sit up next to her and laugh, "So, what were you going to do today?"

"Isn't it obvious? Today I'm going to find out where Dad wants to meet me. Then I'm going to go there."

I practically spring to my feet when she says that.
"Hold on! You're not planning on going alone, are you?"

She thinks about what I said for a second,
"Mm? Yes? I told you yesterday that I don't need your help."

"Yes you do!" I exclaim, "You don't even know where you're meeting yet! What if it's someplace dangerous, or what if it's a trap! Don't you at least want me to scout ahead first?"

She grumbles and hops out of bed, "I told you Masami, I'm a grown girl."
-no you're not, but okay.
"-and I can handle myself just fine. I don't need you to prod or 'help' me in any way. Besides, it's not like Dad to set up a trap. If he's going to agree to meet me, then there's nothing that he wants to do to me. "

"But!"
"That's enough, Masami." She throws on a simple dress and walks out the door.

I'm not really satisfied yet. Why does she have to be so reckless?
The smell of breakfast quickly makes me lose the will to argue with her further. Kaori is clearly thinking the same as she makes a beeline straight for the dinner table.
We walk out into the dining room where Mom has already set up breakfast for the both of us. The smell is really strong this morning, it's making my mouth water. Sausage and biscuits, hash browns, pancak-

Wait, this isn't a standard breakfast.
She never makes any of this at all. Where's the rice? Or the cooked eggs? It's almost as if she didn't make this breakfast.

..Also, why is Mom's door still shut as if she's still asleep if breakfast is on the table?

Okay, Something is definitely wrong here.

Kaori pays it no mind, walking right over to the dinner table and sitting down. She unwraps one of the biscuits and starts eating.
"Kaori!" I scold her.

"Mm?" She says, mouth full, "What's wrong?"
"Don't you think something is kind of wrong here? You just unwrapped your breakfast, it's like it came from a fast-food joint!"

She looks at her food, and then at her hash browns, also wrapped.
"Oh yeah. That is kind of strange."

Then she resumes eating.
How am I supposed to believe that she will be okay if this is how she reacts to weird things?!
I'm going to go see why Mom's door is closed.

Gently, I walk over to Mom's bedroom door and slide it open.
As I suspected, Mom is still sleeping in bed. Her long hair sprawls out from under the covers and over her pillows.

So now I know something is definitely wrong.
I can hear my sister exclaim from the other room,"Wow! Pancakes! Never had these for breakfast before!"

I, on the other hand, only grow more suspicious by the second. Who would give us a mystery breakfast, but not bother waking any of us up?

Slowly I creep to the front door and slide it open, peeking my head out into the yard.
Nothing here. Kaori has stopped eating and started eying me as I carefully walk across the room to the back door.
Sliding it open, I'm met with just the garden and the small pond out back. There's a large statue standing in front of the pond, and a gentle breeze that ruffles the leaves of the garden.

Wait, I don't remember a large statue being out here!

"Hi." The statue says nonchalantly.

WHERE DID HE COME FROM AND HOW DID HE GET HERE?!

Carefully, as to not alert Kaori, I step outside and slide the door shut behind me.
"Surprised to see me here? Your sister did ask for a statement from her father."

Wait.. I know this guy!
It's the only monster at Fortune who doesn't act like a jerk to me! He was even helpful the few times I met him!
I still haven't given him a name..

"Oh! W-what are you doing here?" If I'm trying to sound confident, I'm not doing a very good job.

"I came here to deliver the news on Magici-"
He stops himself, "-Kaori's request to meet with the Chairman. And I thought I would try to be diplomatic while I was here."

This makes him the first monster I've known that's actively trying to call her Kaori.
"Oh? Well-"

"Hold on!" I put my hand up toward him, "Kaori and Mom should be the ones that hear this! Come inside!"

Reluctantly, like the monster doesn't really want to set foot in my home, he follows me inside.

Everyone sits gathered around the table. The monster didn't really want to, but made an exception for an occasion like this.

Mom sips her morning tea, in her other hand is a sealed bottle of Orange Juice.
"That was very nice of you to bring breakfast for everyone!" She chirps, taking a drink from the bottle.

"Err. I was just trying to be polite. No need to thank me."
It's strange how something so intimidating can have such human emotions.
Which is why..
"I think you should have a name!" I blurt out, almost randomly.

"No, no, there's no need for that Masami-"
"That seems like a good idea!" Mom joins in on the teasing.

You're not sure if a monster can blush, but he really seems uncomfortable enough to do so.
"But- anyway. That's not why I'm here. I wanted to tell you that your father wanted to meet you, Kaori."

Kaori, who was stuffing her face most of this time, swallows her food and nearly jumps to her feet.
"Wha?! Really!?"

"Yes, Kaori. But there's a catch. He wants to meet you at Fortune HQ."

Oh no.
No no no no no.

They want her to meet at the big place full of mean monsters and where DAD is and where everyone is a jerk?
No! She shouldn't have to meet him there!

.. Which is why it's all the more humiliating to sit here with pout on my face, and not say anything. This isn't really something for me to comment on. It's Kaori's decision if she's going to take him up on the offer or not.

Which makes it all the harder to tell myself that there's nothing I can do about it.

"At Fortune!? When?" Kaori says, ecstatically
"Today, if possible. He says Sunday is the best day for it, as there won't be anyone else except him around."
"That's great!"

That almost makes me say something, but Mom speaks for me instead.
"Hold it! Why is he so insistent on making sure no one is around? Is he going to do something to her?"
The monster sits back awkwardly in his chair, "That I don't know, it was just part of his decision. If you want my guess, it's because most of the servants spend today in dormancy."

"I think I should go with her." Mom says, adjusting her voice.
"Mom! Wait! I think it'll be okay!" Kaori immediately protests.

He crosses his arms, "Well, you have all day to make the decision. I'm not going to force you into anything."
He looks toward Mom and nods, "..That said, I could accompany you if you like."

"No I-"
And then Kaori thinks about his offer for a minute.
"I'll let you accompany me, but I think I'll be fine alone."

Neither of them have noticed, but my pout has contorted the entirety of my face at this point.
