Autumn of 1944

With US forces well established in liberated France and Soviet troops pushing into Eastern Europe, Nazi Germany is struggling to supply its armies while desperately trying to field its super weapons. The V-2 mobile launch platform cruise missile, the Messerschmitt 262 jet fighter, the type XXI Elektroboot submarine, all are barely beyond the prototype stage, built in a crumbling economy that is managed by a bureacracy under pressure to meet impossible demands with slave labor while different departments compete for scarce resources.

The type XXI is a revolutionary concept, the first real modern submarine. It operates primarily submerged with a snorkel to run the diesels and recharge the batteries for 8 hours every 3 days. It features radar and sonar systems, runs silent and faster than many surface ships, and carries enough rapid loading torpedoes to sink a flotilla. The accommmodations are luxurious compared to the earlier type VII C. But the situation being what it is, only 4 out of over a hundred type XXIs constructed are ever put into service after extensive post-production work, and those never become as reliable as the old submersible VII C torpedo boats. That is what the official record states.

But another type XXI, U-2553, is rushed into service in secret, dispatched with sealed orders, and charged with a frantic hail-mary to turn the war around. SS officers are added to the experienced sailor crew. They are tight lipped and dismissive, to be delivered somewhere in the South Atlantic with their luggage of several heavy crates. In the dark of night along the African coast a type XIV 'Milchkuh' supply submarine is waiting to rendezvous for a final restocking. During approach the veteran sailors of U-2553 congratulate each other for sinking two Allied freighters on the way and speculate about the nature of the mission ahead in hushed voices.

The Ahnenerbe expedition to Neuschwabenland discovered an artifact in 1939. A submarine gate was opened and an entity brought through. It was used to attack shipping to the British isles, its success credited to the wolf packs of the Kriegsmarine.

But control has been slipping and in a desperate effort Ahnenerbe has dispatched an U-Boot with the artifact retrieved 4 years earlier to the altar in Antarctica to strengthen control over the entity with a large sacrifice so that it can be directed to wipe the Allies from France.

The Ahnenerbe unit on board knows the entity will follow the artifact, and they are preparing to sacrifice most of the crew when they get to the altar.

But it won't be enough to control the entity. Instead it will be unleashed upon the world and can only be stopped by the U-Boot crew overcoming the Ahnenerbe unit and luring the entity through the reopened underwater portal with the artifact.

what should the exact nature of the mission and 'fun' be? I had three initial thoughts-

1) Taking an idea from Black Lagoon, the U-boat is commandeered by an officer/Reich Scientist and his entourage. He is convinced that deep beneath the waves is an ancient arsenal of great power that can win the war... or at least reduce the allied victors to dust. This involves a guardian and underwater cave in the twin ideals of the animated Atlantis and Journey to the Center of the Earth. Expect large ruins and hidden horrors.

2) Nazi VIPs smuggle aboard the U-Boat in hopes of escaping the Russian invasion of Berlin. These are members of the Thune Society, and are smuggling some sort of ancient artifact uncovered earlier in the war. This artifact calls to something deep beneath the waves, and the Kriegsmarine have to somehow fight off the massive beast even while evading ruthless allied attacks.

3) Utilizing the common 'portal to another world' game, the U-boat dives to escape enemy attack. At their worst, it looks like the end... until they pass through a lost underwater portal. Whether a random nexus or opened by a cult onboard, they find themselves in a new world- comes in endless water and shallow sea varieties.

One of the main ways of knowing what's going on outside while you're underwater is a directional hydrophone, right? You could have some fun with that. Make one of the players the hydrophone operator and have him pick up increasingly weird shit while he's listening for propeller noises. Maybe you could even find some stuff on youtube or edit it yourself, hand him a pair of headphones and let him have a listen IRL.

Some of the discussion reminds me of Michael Crichton's Sphere. Although not in the same time period, an expedition team ventures into an underwater fortress manned by the Navy and uncovers a supposed alien (Easily changed to something else) artifact which unleashes a creature that changes its form based on the fears of those it attacks.

Construction took place between 1943 and 1945, using around 10,000 concentration camp prisoners and prisoners of war as forced–labour. The facility was 90% completed when, in March 1945, it was badly damaged by Allied bombing with Grand Slam "earthquake" bombs and abandoned. A few weeks later, the area was captured by the British Army.»

Heligoland is an island smack in the middle of the North Sea, like 50 km away from the nearer German cost. It was so obviously exposed to British air attacks that the Kriegsmarine used it sparely; so, in turn the RAF didn't bombed it really, really hard until April 1945, because, why bother?

1. Descent, from the point of descent with half speed, a starboard declination of 10° with a bow-heaviness declination angle of 5°. Distance 188 sm. Given depth - 500 meter. (Because of the moving inside the corridor the pressure on the ship body when maneuvering is insignificant)

2. Ascent, Full load with a stern trim, Ascent angle 23° with a port declination of 22°.190 meter upwards. Distance 75,5 sm.

3. Difficult maneuver! Ascent full speed with a stern trim, Ascent angle 41°. Proceed straight ahead. 110 meter upwards, distance 21,5 sm. Afterwards starboard declination of 8° until ascent to the surface in a distance of 81 sm.

4. Proceed on the surface within the grotto with a starboard declination of 8°, Distance 286 sm.

In 1936 active sonar testing in Antarctic waters, far from Allied listening posts, reveals passages under the ice. Investigation results in the decision for a systematic exploration of these passages.

1937-38 Covert submarine missions, usually organized as maneuver exercises, explore and map the liquid expanses under Antarctica with sonar technology. Techniques are developed to overpressurize the hull and dive beyond the crush depth of unpressurized submarines. However, this severely limits the time crews can remain submerged and careful depressurization procedures must be followed. Experiments replacing nitrogen which becomes toxic at pressure are initiated in Germany. Several submarines are lost.

1938-39 A large scale expedition is mounted to explore ruins discovered under the ice from both below and above. A large submerged gate is discovered deep under Antarctica that leads to another unfamiliar ocean which surrounds unknown land masses of an alien nature. The discovery is labeled Inner Earth and sealed under utmost secrecy. A base of operations is erected under Antarctica from where submarine expeditions into Inner Earth are initiated, mapping the other side. It is named Neuschwabenland, identical to a frivolous claim to Norwegian territory near the Expedition route in 1938/39 in order to misinform any possible disclosures.

1940 An artifact is recovered from an abandoned temple-like structure on the coast line of an Inner Earth continent. A creature is spotted trailing the submarine carrying the artifact through the gateway back to Neuschwabenland base.

The artifact is transported back to Germany with the creature in close pursuit. It is discovered that the creature can be directed to some degree by handling the artifact in specific ways. Archaic rituals and blood sacrifice seem to be involved. By the time the submarine reaches the North Sea half the crew has succumbed to an unspecified condition according to the log, and the boat is diverted to Norway.
