Your dreams are largely unremarkable. You find yourself drifting between scattered, incoherent remnants of memories long past, never dwelling on any one for more than a few minutes at most. Slowly the haze of sleep lifts, sensation coming back to you. You're in no hurry to wake up, and so simply lay there half-asleep enjoying the warmth of an actual bed. The last time you slept on something that wasn't a cot or a stone slab must have been in Anthus weeks ago.

Eventually you throw back the covers and haul yourself out of bed. Light streams through the slats of the windows on the far wall, you'd guess that it's probably late in the morning or perhaps noon at the latest. You dress yourself in the silver trimmed black robes you bought in the market the other day, careful to avoid making too much noise. Profectus is still asleep, and considering recent events he's probably earned his rest.

Slipping out of the room you're greeted by the scents of brewing coffee, fresh baked bread, frying bacon. Someone must be cooking downstairs. Seeing no reason not to, you meander down the stairs and into the sitting area on the second floor. The balcony doors are thrown open to let in the cool morning air before the heat of the afternoon turns the city into a veritable oven.

Your master's new apprentice, Rasim, stands upon one leg in the center of the room with his arms spread wide. Droplets of water melt into and out of being around him, forming a thick mist. His eyes are shut tightly, he seems to be focusing quite hard on this task of his. You can't say if he's doing well or poorly, your Master never had you do this. It looks a bit silly, to your eyes.

You pass him by on your way to the kitchen, finding your Master holding a flat metal pan in hand, absentmindedly flipping over the thin strips of pig flesh as a magical flame heats the pan from beneath. Zahak is sitting on the floor next to him, staring at him with a disturbing intensity. A stack of flatbread cools on the counter next to him, a bowl of hummus next to it. On the opposite side of the stovetop a tall glass pot filled with thick, black coffee sits as of yet untouched.

>Snag some flatbread and fix yourself a cup of coffee, chat with your Master.
>Now is as good a time as any to scold Zahak for ruining your Master's oven, since he seems to have awoken from his opium-induced coma.
>Ask how your master is finding the brooch you gave him, and if he's tried it out yet.
>Announce to your Master your intention to test for your Grandmaster's robes.

Bringing him over to the broken oven to point at it emphatically of course.
>>
>>37441747
Not with taking away the gold, let's hope he takes our words and emotions seriously. Maybe a flick of the nose, since it won't actually hurt, but will serve to show our irritation.
Explain that ovens are useful, so he shouldn't destroy them, and generally shouldn't destroy things for no reason, especially if they're other people's, they might be useful later.
Don't forget to praise him if he shows us that he learned how to control water.
>>37441839
Will we ask about what Rasim's doing? I imagine it wouldn't be hard to fit in.
>>37441857
Now that I think about it, shouldn't Zahak or Mik be able to fix it? Or just our master?
>>
>>37441877
I'd also like to ask what Rasim's doing.
>>
>>37441877
Not Zahak, but we should be able because of our Metal magic. Or Fulvia, then that oven will be better than before.
>>
>>37441912
I imagine the oven is made from stone/earth, so Earth magic should work fine.
>>
>>37441935
Oh yeah, could be. I thought it was a metal oven.
We could even enchant "create and sustain fire" into it.
>>
>>37441954
We could use a portion of Zahaks' soul for it too, since he broke it!

No don't.
>>
>>37441935
>>37441912
It's basically something like this, although the oven probably wouldn't be situated so high up considering Zahak ripped open its door and crawled inside.
>>
>>37441954
Or, you know, don't do something incredibly unnecessary and get our ass in trouble with spirits because of it.
>>
>>37442057
And why would that get us into trouble with spirits?

If you'll recall, it was the Janitor who mentioned it. And honestly, whatever.
>>
>>37442085
Dragoncat also mentioned that spirits would want to kill us for knowing/practicing enchanting.
>>
>>37442109
As a matter of course, too. I wonder if its because enchanters taste better or something. Should probably inform our master of their warnings before we teach him.

just realized that with enchanting we can produce fresh water from salt water without having a lot of vatis spending vys on it all the time,
we'd have a chamber where the salt water is transported to through pipes of whatever, the chamber is enchanted so the water starts boiling and the steam goes out pipe at the top of the chamber and into a chamber that has a weak cold enchantment, our family would gain from it and so would the entire city, and the shah would have even more of a reason to unbanish us sooner.

I doubt some water cleansing chambers are going to be the fall of El-Amin, anons. Beyond the obvious fact that the Rhynians went way way further than that, the whole line of history that concerns their fall has been much more complex than "god's say no, get rekt."

>>

Choices and actions shape Mik's character, and out master isn't exactly the ideal image of rationality and self-preservation.
And offer to infinite potential that many would consider an impossible to refuse offer, that still puts the user and people around him at quite considerable risk.
But whatever, let's hope the gods don't mind just a couple guys doing it, maybe the old man enchanted Prof's arm which means it's somewhat okay, we should inspect it though.

No anon, the gods are real, and all spirits are below them, they probably serve them most of the time, see dragoncat, he probably serves Prthvi.
Don't forget that Pani handles the reincarnation of souls.
>>
>>37442933
A combination of things. I don't believe it was as simple as the Myths and Legends say it was.

Keep in mind that the claims that they were smited by the gods haven't come from any Spirits, those were from what we've been told by old stories. There's too much lost history to presume it at base level.

I am sure some mix of spirits or void dwellers would've had a hand in their downfall, mainly because we know what happens when a void generator fails, and

While two spirits and on Janitor have said that enchanting is forbidden knowledge to mortals, none have really elaborated on the complete truth of Rhynia's collapse itself. I suspect there are several reasons why they haven't, or why they can't. Namely because they'd be admitting they had a problem dealing with mortals, and the ones we've encountered have all had some measure of pride and capriciousness.

There were also the "Allies" that were contacted at through Licae's observatory, and how the facility had been destroyed shortly after the Dux's most recent message and their contact, as well as the hole in the floor and ceiling of the facility as though something had shot through it from above. And beyond that there was the interesting little note we found which seemed to hint to an assassination attempt on the emperor.

I think there are many reasons Rhynia collapsed, in the same way that most empires collapse because of a long string of failures that build themselves up, such as those that would give spirits the position of power needed to destroy an Empire and then somehow, not have themselves actually benefit all that much from its destruction; considering how little they've been recently worshiped to our knowledge.
>>
>>37443282
yes, when he came back.
>>
>>37443303
That's what we believe and what most Samja believe, yes. To suggest otherwise is blasphemy, and yet the spirit gave us only that knowledge in the pastebin.

Clearly, something's up.
>>
>>37443326

*we know how spirits don't like being sealed or confined to tasks the way Rhynians made some be, like the gate guardian.

>Meet a dorf 6 months later.
>does a double take at Prof's arm then start laughing.
>When asked why, he points at the scribble with tears in his eyes.
>It means "I enjoy feasting on dwarf man milk"
>Prof's face when he realise that Samjan are dicks even when they're helpful
>>
>>37443326
>one Janitor
I think The Collector is more a singular, unique being of the world, someone who manages all items in the Void, anon.
>>
>>37443326
Yeah I thought that was odd too. If spirits or gods destroyed the empire then there should be a bunch of spirits who wouldn't taken advantage of the situation to get worshipers.
But nope, there ain't squat.
>>
We probably shouldn't assume that everything the spirits have told us is a hundred percent truthful. Even if they don't outright lie, they might bend the truth or leave out important details.
>>
>>37443478
That doesn't matter much when dealing with outright statements like "enchanting is forbidden to mortals" though.

Man to think soma went through all that shit to include it after we voted to get it and than ask for it to be revamped.
>>
>>37443429
Yes, while he janitored the detritus of the void and seemingly converted stuff to vys I'm sure it was more than it appeared to be.

>>37443478
>>37443509
Quite likely, given they love messing with mortals. It's not like Lying is forbidden to spirits or void creatures, as far as we know.

It seems to me more like spirits more easily take advantage of mortal enchanters than some primeval ban on the art itself. Since they give the art away pretty easily for tasks that give them power, and would eventually try binding any mortals to their deals with them to get more out of an enchanter greedy for lost knowledge, since they've cornered the market.

And saying enchanting is forbidden suits that purpose well, especially for void creatures who don't want to deal with mortals being shits and making generators and when one fail spectacularly we get an invasion of creatures who make a buffet out of mortals.
>>
>>37443561
i want to use it but i don't want to teach it to others than our son
>>
>>37443561
I was always here, always being reluctant, it just seems other anons have realized how dangerous it is.
>>
>>37443595
I thought it was more inter-spirit competition, actually.

Consider that the spirits are willing to give away the knowledge and protect those that are bound to their will from other spirits.
It's not that enchanting is forbidden, is it simply premium. No spirit wants another spirit to have enchanters working for them, because that lets them more easily influence the world and target other spirits.
Our recent spirit knowledge kinda supports that idea too.

You make your way over to the plate of flatbread, taking a loaf off the top and tearing off a chunk to dip in the hummus. You wonder absentmindedly how broken the oven can really be if your Master still managed to make fresh bread. Unless he bought it from a bakery, you suppose. You're not really sure if there's one near-by. Zahak has turned his attention to the bacon in your master's pan to you, having crossed the room to lean against your side. It's almost like he's trying to give you a hug.

“So what was that exercise you were having Rasim perform?” You ask between mouthfuls of flatbread. It's still warm from the oven, utterly delightful.

Your master shrugs his shoulders, focusing on maintaining the proper temperature and not burning the bacon. “He's been having trouble conceptualizing the water that surrounds us. I've been having him spend his mornings trying to draw water from the air, to get him used to the idea. He's progressing apace.”

You nod, but a thought occurs to you. “Why have him do it standing on one leg? That seems pointless.”

Your master grins. “Mostly for my own amusement, though I told him it was to improve his focus. Really, it's just fun to make him slip and fall. A horrible sense of balance, that one.”

You shake your head, it's a wonder you turned out as well as you have considering the torment your old Master seems to delight in putting his apprentices through. “Good to know you're giving him the same treatment I received. I look forward to hearing about his first terrifying nighttime voyage. Waking up in the middle of the ocean atop my waterlogged mattress is still perhaps the most confused I've ever been, and I've experienced some truly incomprehensible nonsense.”
(1/3)
>>
Your Master seems to wax nostalgic. “Getting you out of the house without waking you was a true challenge. I ended up recruiting a colleague of mine, an Earth Vatis, to help. He needed to create a hole in the wall of your room just so the two of us could extract you from the room smoothly. Of course, after that it was just a matter of getting you to the docks and tossing you into the sea.”

You hope Chrys and Profectus are grateful that you don't pull those sorts of pranks on them, even if you're not the most attentive of Masters. “Well, anyway. How are you finding the brooch? Have you given it a try yet?”

{I have now.} Comes your master's response. {Quite the interesting little device, a shame the knowledge of its creation has been lost to the ages. Imagine how much more advanced our understanding of the universe might be had the Empires of old only survived to today!}

You wonder if you ought to tell your master about your rediscovery of the art of Enchanting. You're certain he'd want you to teach him what you've learned, but you must admit you're wary. Everything you know of enchanting tells you it's a dangerous trade that attracts the wrong sort of attention. In the end, you decide that you ought to at least inform your master of what you've learned. You owe him that much.

{Actually, Master. I've mentioned my various encounters with spirits over the course of my travels, yes?}

He turns his attention away from his cooking, looking to you. “You've told me you've encountered spirits, but you never went into any sort of depth regarding your dealings with them. Why?”

My knowledge is limited, but I've already found application. I used it to create Zahak's blanket, and just yesterday I learned a variety of runes from a spirit dwelling in an old abandoned estate.”

Your master stares at you, the flames beneath his pan creeping slowly higher. A burnt smell starts to fill the air, the flames growing far hotter than necessary without your master's careful control. Eventually you feel the need to break the silence. “Master, you're burning the bacon.”

He snaps out of his shock, the flame vanishing in an instant. He sets the pan down on top of the stove and turns to face you. “Gods above, Mikhael! Why didn't you tell me this sooner? Do you know what this means? What doors this opens? You could go down in history as the man who rediscovered enchanting! You will need to teach me, there is so much I must do! Experiments to perform, combinations to try-”

You hold up a hand to stop your master before he gets ahead of himself. “While I'd be willing to teach you, you should know the dangers involved. Enchanting involves ripping off a portion of your very soul and imbuing it into an object. Additionally, mortals are not supposed to be able to wield the language of the gods. While the spirits I've spoken to have all given away the knowledge freely, each has mentioned that others of their kind are not so generous. There exist spirits who would kill me simply because I possess the knowledge necessary to enchant an object, there are many more who would kill me for using it or teaching it to another.”

>>
Your master scoffs. “Why on Earth would I care about the opinions of spirits? May Surya drag them into his ever-burning maw! This knowledge is worth more than merely my life or my sanity, it could change the world! Bring us back to the glories of the past!”

>If he's absolutely sure, you'll teach him.

I hadn't considered that.

It seems really obvious though, spirits just using mortals as tools in their games. Enchanting not actually being forbidden, just being another method they don't want rival spirits to utilize through mortal contracts.

Makes sense why they'd have something against the prolific enchanters of Rhynia then.

With a sigh, you relent. “Very well, I will teach you then. However, you must not spread this knowledge or overuse the art of enchanting. Attracting the attention of spirits would be good for no one, and despite your dismissal of the value of your life you're still needed alive. What would Rasim do without you as his Master? You know how most view clanless, he'd be left to his own devices or shuffled off to some know-nothing incompetent. To whom would I seek for advice when I screw up spectacularly? I'd be left to figure out how to fix my own mistakes.”

Your Master opens his mouth to protest, but shuts it after a moment's thought. He seems to consider what you've said while going through the motions of pulling down two clay mugs from a cabinet and filling each of them from the pot of coffee. Finally he sighs, handing one of the cups to you. “Very well, I will keep my experiments to a minimum. Do not expect me to abstain from its use entirely. You cannot simply hand me the tools to shape reality and expect me to leave them to gather dust.”

You take the mug gratefully, taking a sip before responding. The coffee is bitter, but it serves well to drive off the last vestiges of sleep from your mind. “As you will, Master. As you will. The basics themselves are fairly simple, although I admit I'm not sure how exactly to go about teaching you the runes themselves. One would not think it is as easy as merely showing you the runes and telling you what they mean. We shall need to find out as we go along.”

Your master nods, grabbing a loaf of flat bread for himself and tearing off a chunk to dip in hummus. “Of course, when shall the lesson begin? I think it understandable that I'm eager to get started learning what I can.”

To be honest, you hadn't actually given that much thought. “Well, I'll need to be leaving in a few days. There are task outside the city I must attend to. We will need to find time before then. Unfortunately I don't think today will work. I was hoping to head across town to the Palace so that I might test for my Grandmaster's robes.”

Your master raises an eyebrow inquisitively. “Are you sure that's wise? Keep in mind, Mikhael. You are still banished. Even if you're due to be pardoned, the clerics working in the palace will still be obligated to have you arrested once they find your name among the list of Aghtaki. While I doubt anything would come of it, it would still spread word of your impending unbanishment and may draw the ire of the Shah. He wanted you to keep things quiet for now, didn't he?”

>You hadn't thought of that. You should probably reconsider.

You frown. You suppose what your Master says makes sense. You hadn't really thought it would be much of an issue, but thinking back on it you suppose you did spend about an hour waiting for the clerics working in the palace to sift through records in search of your name in any number of records. You imagine that, had they found your name amongst the list of Aghtaki, you would've had quite the problem. At the time it seemed sort of ridiculous to you, since all Aghtaki are branded, but now that you've removed your own brand you see why they'd bother keeping detailed records.

“You raise a good point, Master. Normally I wouldn't even think to risk getting my robes at the Palace itself, but without a set of Vatis robes from the Shah himself I won't be able to access the Grand Library. I've heard of an artifact on display there that I was hoping to purchase.”

Your master swallows a chunk of flatbread, washing it down with a sip of coffee. Once he's finished, he speaks. “What artifact is this? So far as I recall, the artifacts on display are either worthless, inert, or their uses are a mystery. All of the actually useful artifacts were seized by the Shah long ago for storage in the vaults beneath the palace.”

You pass the remnants of your second loaf of flatbread to Zahak, sated for now. He sniffs it warily, only hesitantly taking it into his jaws. He seems to decide he likes it, because he devours it quickly enough. Good to know he's not quite a strict carnivore, though you somehow doubt that bread is good for him. “The artifact I need is a key. It's got a gem set in the handle and a sort of oval crossguard. It's supposed to resemble a blade, but far too small to be of any use.”

Your Master looks at you oddly. “That's a key? It's labeled as one of the former Shah's letter openers, the trigger to its enchantment long ago forgotten.”

But which is it? robes with armor, denoting someone more familiar with the arcane?

A letter opener? You suppose that makes sense. As it was described to you, it did sort of sound like a letter opener. “Well, according to the spirit I met yesterday it's a key. I'm inclined to trust what it says. Do you know how much it cost?”

Your Master gestures dismissively. “A few hundred gold, I'm sure. You know they don't actually want to sell the few artifacts they have remaining so they raise the prices to the most ridiculous levels for even the most useless of artifacts. If you're willing to provide the coin, I can get you the key. It shouldn't take me more than a few minutes. I'm good friends with most of the Vatis who work within the Grand Library. I could leave after breakfast.”

>That sounds fine. Give him five hundred gold and trust him to negotiate a good price.

“When you're ready to leave, simply tell me. I'll give you five hundred gold to make the purchase. I can't imagine it would cost more than that and I trust you to negotiate a good price.”

Your Master nods, picking up the plate stacked with flatbread and the bowl of hummus and carrying both with him into the sitting area. “It shouldn't cost more than three hundred, and really I'm hoping I can get it down to about a hundred and fifty, maybe. It depends on who's there.”

You follow him into the sitting area, Zahak hesitating while he eyes the bacon hungrily but ultimately electing to follow you. As you enter the sitting area your Master condenses a ball of water above Rasim's head, letting it swell to the size of your head before releasing it. It falls, and though Rasim manages to divert some of it the vast majority ends ups splashing onto his head. He ends up soaked almost from head to toe, the thick mist that had surrounded him quickly dissipating as he loses his balance and falls forward.

He hits the ground with a heavy thud, letting out a yelp. Your master chuckles dryly, setting down the bread and hummus in the center of a collection of pillows, where his favorite pipe would usually sit. Rasim is already dry, thanks to your Master's magic, but he doesn't seem particularly eager to get up. He's such a timid lad.

It takes your Master's scolding to get him to his feet. “Are you going to lay there like a useless sot all day or get up and eat your breakfast? No need to go feeling sorry for yourself, you nearly had it. You just need to learn to bring the moisture you draw from the air together.”

(1/3)
>>
Reluctantly Rasim pushes himself to his feet and, staring intensely at the ground all the while, marches over to the circle of pillows. He sits down with an annoyed huff and folds his arms in front of his chest. You wonder if you were that moody as a child. You don't recall ever really throwing a temper tantrum, except for maybe a few times when you were very young. Regardless, you turn your attention to Zahak.

You picture his blanket and a stack of coins, transmitting the thoughts to Zahak along with a general sense of inquisitiveness. At the same time you speak to him aloud. “Where are you keeping your horde, Zahak?”

Zahak bites the hem of your robe and gently tugs on it before stomping off towards a stack of pillows in the corner. He shoves his head into the mass and roots around until he topples the entire thing, moving pillows aside with his mouth until he reveals a neat little nest at the bottom of the pile. You're not sure if you like the lengths he's going to in order to hide his meager stash of wealth. You assume it's a thing innate to dragons, but you can't be certain. Regardless you step forward and carefully pluck up five gold from his pile. The coins are hot, so you have to be careful.

Zahak hisses in confusion and displeasure as you take the coins, but doesn't move to interfere. That's good, he knows he can't be aggressive with you. You pick up hints of anger, sadness, and even some panic in his thoughts.

You respond with a sense of general displeasure, disappointment, and try to communicate the sentiment that this is a way to make up for what he did. “My being away does not give you license to do as you please. You must treat the homes of others with respect, as you would your own.”

(2/3)
>>
When your Master returns from the kitchen with a plate stacked high with bacon, much of it slightly burned, you hand him the coins. He takes them, but only seems to be confused. You opt to explain. “Those are from Zahak's hoard. I'm making him pay you back as punishment for what he did to your oven. I know that probably won't cover it, but it's the gesture that matters.”

Your Master shrugs his shoulders. “I was merely going to have a colleague of mine come by and fix it after you had left, explain it away as an experiment gone wrong or some such. It would not be the first instance of such things. It really won't cost me a thing.”

Zahak hisses loudly, smoke curling from between his needle-like teeth. You're not sure he understood your master, but he seems none too pleased either way. You catch wisp of memory, of Zahak staring intensely at the water in front of him and willing a little twisting spiral to rise out of the bath. Then the image of a goat on fire.

>You hadn't realized he'd actually managed to manipulate the water to some extent. You'll need to get him a goat.

You frown. You hadn't quite realized he actually managed to manipulate the water, even if it was only to some limited extent. “While I'm proud of what you managed to accomplish, I'm still not happy about what you did to Master Karim's property. I'll get you the goat as a reward for figuring out how to manipulate water, but you won't be getting your gold back.”

You, of course, accompany your little speech with the appropriate mental imagery to go with it. Zahak still doesn't have the grasp of language necessary for you to simply speak to one another, at least not in anything but the simplest of sentences. Zahak seems mollified, if not entirely happy. He sinks down and wraps his wings around himself like a blanket of some sort, it sort of reminds you of a bat curling up on itself. You try to impart upon him that you still love him, and you're proud of him, but he did a bad thing.

That taken care of you sit down in the circle of pillows around the plates of food, your master on one side and Rasim on the other. You'll pick up the goat while your master is out, it will be a good way to kill time. You notice that Rasim seems to have perked up, his stomach apparently getting the best of him. You eat in silence for a while, sipping idly at your coffee. Eventually Rasim seems to muster up the courage to speak.

“M-master Karim?” He ask, voice faltering.

Your Master glares at him, obviously annoyed. “Well? Spit it out and quit wasting my time, boy. No need to ask permission to ask a question. Just needlessly redundant.”

Rasim shrinks away. You wonder why he's such a coward. Even Profectus, who you wouldn't exactly describe as courageous, isn't this bad. He takes a moment to gather his thoughts and steel himself before speaking. “Is this normal?”
(1/4)
>>
Your Master seems confused. “Eating breakfast? Yes, eating breakfast is normal. You know, most people living in civilized society have three meals a day; breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This is pretty standard fare. Are you touched in the head, boy? Were you dropped as a child?”

Rasim coughs, turning his head to look at Zahak where he's curled up on the floor. “I meant... well, associating with Aghtaki, dragons, talk of spirits and void entities.” He turns to look at you, looking just slightly horrified. “A-am I going to grow up as crazy as you are?”

You shrug your shoulders, nonplussed. “Probably, if not quite on par with me. Perhaps you'll be even worse. You can never quite tell.”

Your Master nods. “Insanity is a risk all Vatis must face, and accept. We've been born with the ability to bend the laws of the universe, madness simply comes with the territory.” He pauses in thought. “The dragon is a bit excessive. I don't imagine you'll need to worry about too many dealings with dragons.”

You frown. “Zahak is hardly excessive. Perhaps adopting a dragon is a bit unorthodox but I rescued him from the bottom of a mine shaft, he was the runt of the litter. Taking care of him is the least I can do and I'm sure that he'll return the favor as he grows older.”

Your conversation is interrupted as Mortia appears at the entrance to the sitting room. She appears to only be wearing an incredibly baggy long sleeved shirt of some sort, her hair a disheveled mess of curls. She's rubbing at one of her eyes with the sleeve of her shirt, apparently still half asleep. “Where's the bathroom in this place? I checked my room but couldn't find one.”
(2/4)
>>
>>37448465
>This medieval empire can suddenly understand future technology!
>>
Your Master is the one to respond. “It's the door next to the bath.”

She nods and shuffles off, yawning. You have to say, she has nice legs. You hadn't really noticed before, what with her tendency to wear dresses and robes. Long, and subtly toned. Terribly pale though, you're forced to wonder why everyone save your own kind seems so light skinned.

Your Master nudges you, he's adopted a lascivious grin. “You know, Mik. Were I in your position I imagine I would've already succumbed to the degeneracy our kind so detest. I might have lost my physical sight, but I just saw her from six different angles. Every one enjoyable.”

You sigh. Your Master has always been known as something of a libertine but you can't say you've always agreed with his... well, lack of scruples. If everyone had his attitude you'd quickly end up no better than the elves, your personal feelings on the matter aside.

You pass the morning with light conversation, Mortia rejoining your group shortly. Rasim stays silent through out, he seems embarrassed about something or other. Slowly the rest of your companions join you. Skull Kid is the next to arrive, followed by Darzi and Chryssa. Profectus wanders down a few minutes later, with Fulvia the last to join the little party. By that point breakfast has more or less been devoured, nothing left save a few empty plates and a few remnants of hummus.

Your master stands shortly after the last of your companions join you, stretching out his back with a pained grunt. “Well, I should be getting to the library. I shouldn't be gone long.” You nod, reaching into your cloak and withdrawing a fat sack of coins. Gods above, Ricky is a convenient companion. You couldn't imagine what you'd do if you didn't have him to organize your things. Your Master takes the sack gratefully, forced to hold it in both hands due to the weight, before wandering off towards the stairs.

Oh, well, first we have to know if its feasible.
We can just do it with enchanting if we want. Most of the more thorough water purification methods that would work for a large city tend to have some not-so-quaint industrial mats.

When we move into the mansion we should set some sort of system up where our companions can stay instead of going on missions with us when they want but they have to pay rent and obviously don't get a cut of the money from the missions.

The thing about the mansion is that it's not really a house, we won't be living there. It's more like an office building, or more exactly, a guild house. You don't make your employees pay rent to come work at your fancy tower.

Not for whoever we end up leaving there. Skull Kid or Mortia would use it as a lab for tech shit/alchemy respectively. We could use it as a workshop or observatory, what with all the magical shit in the attic. Fulvia could use it as a base from which to plan world domination. The only pure combatants we have are Profectus and Chrys, and even those two could use it as a training facility.
>>

What the fuck ever, I'm not going to argue with you anymore, We're both going to assert that either should or shouldn't pay rent, and not waiver an inch
>>
>>37449734
It really isn't by itself, since partial invisibility is an advanced technique from inviaibility, which is an advanced form of illusions.

>>
>>37449760
Why the fuck not though? It's just a symbolic amount, our companions aren't going to complain about something that should be a given.
>>
>>37449760
My entire point is that most of our companions could use the space for purposes which enrich everyone. We could sell Mortia's potions, or Skull Kid's inventions, or what have you. They're not tenants, they're comrades. We get rich when they get rich.
>>
>>37449823

no

Partial invisibility isn't very useful at all beyond a few niche uses.
Air manipulation however.

I know, I'm the ine who originally came up with the idea of sound magic (also have some experiments though out for that, namely things like explosions, wind, using manipulate to create a virating paper, shockwave, making the air still, etc.) but partial invisibility has a lot more immediate returns for our investment.

Build up a lot of small nuanced utility magic, and then use metamagics to take them to their extremes.

Most of the minor stuff isn't going to be anything incredible until we combine it in neat ways with effects and metamagics.
>>
>>37449916
I mean, it's weird, and vys draining. It would be cool but not really the entire reason I'd want to spend time studying it.
>>
>>37449964
From a utility standpoint
Air > partial invisibility
Mostly we can use it to disguise or even hide sounds.
>>
>>37450041
Air is also a wider array of very general possibilities than partial invisibility which is a singular property so the greater than is inherently biased in its favor on that technicality alone, but whatever.
>>
>>37450041
>hide sound

Could be pretty useful for the kind of shit our job entails. The ubiquitous nature of air would also suggest to me that we would end up finding plenty chances to make our lives easier by learning abit about manipulating it.

Also, anyone else want to get our Master to teach us that nifty lightning bolt attack from when we brought him into the cloak?

You turn your attention to Skull Kid, or Thaddeus, or Thad. You're not really sure what people are calling him these days. “Skull Kid, how goes experimentation? Make any breakthroughs?”

He shrugs his shoulders. You notice that he tends to keep his helmet down these days, you get the feeling he doesn't want to freak people out. “I've discovered some interesting details regarding vys and the way it flows. I still have no idea what the hell that little crystal I use to make my gauntlet work is, but I've managed to rewire the gauntlet to be more efficient. Not nearly as much bleed off, and I can better control the power of the blast it produces. Oh! Actually, I do have some big news. I was digging through that pile of junk the other day and I found this hunk of metal. It was just sort of this jagged sphere, no real obvious shape. When I picked it up, I found that I could control its shape via thought. I imagine it will prove useful, though I haven't decided how yet.”

Huh, that actually does sound interesting. Perhaps unshaped Elaudian Steel? That's the only sort of semi-liquid metal you can think of off the top of your head. Certainly the only type that could be controlled by thought. “You know, Skull Kid. I've been wondering. Most of a Water Vatis' time immediately after graduating from beneath the yolk of their Master is spent filtering salt water for use on the farms and by the people of the city. Can you think of any way to improve that process? I imagine we could sell it to the Shah for a fortune.”
(1/4)
>>
>>37450233
True. Feels like forever since we picked up a new meta or effect. I just figure if we can get him to show us that lightning attack once or twice before we leave we could figure out how to replicate it pretty easily when we have time.
>>
Skull Kid rocks back and forth where he sits for a moment, thinking. “I mean, yeah. I can think of a few ways. To filter water, that is. Desalination, that is to say removing the salt from seawater, would require a bit more effort. You could set up a solar still fairly easily. It would basically evaporate the water slowly and, In the process of doing so, leave behind the salt. However, this is slow and probably not feasible on a large scale. More of a survival thing, if you're desperate. The best method to use would be multi-stage flash distillation. Basically, you have a bunch of chambers in a tank filled with sea water. You use a heat source to rapidly turn the water to steam, alternating between which chamber you heat. You can set it up so that fresh sea water is pumped through at a constant rate, producing a constant flow of fresh water.”

He shrugs his shoulders. “I'd need a piece of paper and some time to plan, but I should be able to work something out. I'm not sure what I'd use to heat the water though, since I doubt you've discovered petroleum or gasoline.” He'd be right, you have no idea what those words mean. “I imagine I could rig something to work with vys. Anyway, it would be quite the undertaking.”

Hmm... well, it's something to consider. You imagine if you could outproduce the vatis desalinating water and transferring it into storage tanks by a fair margin you could sell the water to the Shahdom. Then again, you might find the facility seized by the Shah if it proves particularly effective. The Shah, after all, could claim ownership over anything under his domain. Not without consequences, but if he phrased it as for the good of the people he might get away with it.

(2/4)
>>
“Well, look into it Skull Kid. I trust you'll come up with something, and if we can get rich while alleviating some of the challenges of living in the middle of a vast desert then that's all the better.” He nods his assent, and you turn your attention to Rasim. “How have you enjoyed life under my old Master? He can seem a bit harsh, but he really does care about his apprentices. He knows what he's talking about, too. I only finished my tutelage with him two years ago and I'm already a Grandmaster.”

Rasim fidgets, he doesn't really seem like he wants to speak. Eventually he finds the courage. “W-well, I mean. M-master is nice, usually. It's just... I wish he wouldn't treat me like an idiot. I might not be the brightest or the most talented, and I don't really understand how to, well... make friends. I'm not stupid though.”

You wave a hand dismissively. “That's just the way Master Karim is. He treats everyone like that, he treats me like that. It doesn't mean he thinks less of you. He actually finds you to be quite the talented youth, and thinks that your abilities are advancing apace. He's merely annoyed by how timid you are.”

Rasim frowns deeply. “It's not my fault. All the other apprentices call me worthless. It's better to just avoid them instead of dealing with their insults. Then Master is always so annoyed with me. I don't want to say anything and upset him.”

Darzi speaks up, a cup of what must be cold coffee clutched in her hands. “That's simply not true. It's always better to confront an issue rather than just avoid it and let it fester. You need to stand up to your peers, violently if necessary. Even if you get in a fight and lose it still shows people that you're not a coward.”

(3/4)
>>
Profectus nods. “She's right. If someone won't leave you alone then you need to give them a swift kick in the nuts, or you know. Whatever the equivalent of that would be for a woman. Punch in the tit? Whatever, my point is show them you're not just a push over.”

Mortia frowns. “I don't really think violence is the answer to the boy's problems. He should talk it out. Most children are actually very sweet, if you just treat them kindly. I imagine if you sat down and explained that you don't like their taunting they'd leave you alone. Failing that, just don't react to them.”

Skull Kid shrugs his shoulders. “I mean, in prison if some guy is giving you shit you just stab them. That or beat their ass, show the others you're not to be fucked with. I doubt stabbing your fellow apprentices is a good idea. Basically, just ignore my advice.”

>He should stand up to the other apprentices, violently if it comes to that.
