It's probably too early to start a civ, but we Eurofags need quests that begin before midnight and end before 5 in the morning. So, I'm giving it a shot.

Disclaimer: I won't do any races I don't want to and I'd prefer to do a race that isn't already being done by a competent CM. Not all races will be what they seem like from the pic. Also, I'll accept any write-in races and lands I like the sound of, provided they're popular.

As for the place I don't care
>>
>>37611420
I always kind of wondered about the traits these races have and how significant tehy actually are or they are just fluff.

Like "Wins combat in case of a draw" "harder to faint due to bloodloss"

I have no idea how these work.
>>
>>37611797
the way i understand it is:
in combat the dice are thrown for both races...if they both have the same number it is a draw in which case this comes in play
the second one is just the explenation of why they win in draw
>>
>>37611797
These pictures were made up by a guy who didn't give us rules. I run dwarf civilizarion quest and I just use them as guidelines for things. But my dwarfs are weird and have very different resolution mechanics than what the chart implies.

About combat and drawing, I dunno, but the second one is self explanatory, if CM declares people faint from blood loss, those guys don't.
>>
>>37611829

I understand it more or less the same way. Of course, one side may be stronger than the other, in which case advantage rolls and/or modifiers come to play. I'm not saying that's how I'll do it though.

Alright, the votes so far seem to be:

2 insects

They have cast you out, forced you to brave the desert on your own. Their vast expanse stretched all over the sandy wastes and past the canyons, and every step of the way, you were hassled and assaulted. But even without any of your drones to protect you, you persevered, by will or luck, and refused to stop, even when you came across the molten lands your kin dreads to enter. You were attacked by firebugs, scalelings, and various vermin. And yet you persevered. Because you were the grandest princess of your hive, and now, you are a queen. A mutant queen, unwanted by her people, but a queen still. You will make your own people and carve our your piece of the land where they dared not go, and you will show the world your worth.

You trek past giant geysers and fields of basalts, until you eventually arrive at a natural cave. You've traveled far enough, and decide it to be suitable for your purposed. You gather all the meat of your prey into a large pit with you, and start to grow your egg sac. You will be immobile, but your children will be your legs and claws.

As you begin to produce the eggs, your mutated nature stirs within your bowels, attempting to take over your eggs. But your will is stronger. You may prevent it entirely to produce regular drones, or try to use it to influence the nature of your spawn.

You apply all of your will into suppressing the chaotic nature of your womb, and find it surprisingly easy to do so. You don't think you've conquered it fully yet, but you're certain you will, soon. If only your mother was a bit more open-minded to your nature...

After a few days, the males emerge from their eggs, fully formed. Unlike the females that emerge from fertilized eggs, drones shed their larval form before their birth. Very fortunate, as you find your food supply dwindling rapidly. You gorged yourself with most of your initial haul, and after the gestation period of the eggs, you have mere scraps left. Your twelve newborn drones devour their eggs voraciously, and slump to the floor with no command issued by yourself. You do notice that they are extremely uncomfortable in the heat of the cave. The temperatures will reduce their effectiveness drastically.

Nine of your drones return, carrying the carcasses of two firebugs. One of them is larger than any you've seen or heard about. They report that they followed a natural trail to the left of the map and adjacent to the mountain, and they found some firebugs coming in and out of the cave. According to their hunting programming, they attacked an isolated one, but were ambushed in turn by the large one they failed to detect, who burned thee of your drones to death with its breath.

You now have enough food to feed you and your remaining drones for 6 days, or less if you decide to produce more offspring. Females cost more than males, but are a dedicated warrior caste.

Rolled 11 (1d20)

>>
>>37612966
constant mutating into what you eat seems to stresfull on the body..

maybe just research
>analyze the subject we eat...
and we can then applay its traits to our eggs
>>
>>37612966
Yeah the only other insect civ I've ever seen had them mutate based on what they ate, fruits and animals and such
>>
Perhaps the more food we have, the more we can convert it to "evolution points"? And eating a new creating unlocks the possibility of acquiring a trait from that? So a firebug has heat resistance and fire breath. Those two traits are on our list of unlockable abilities, and now we need to accumulate evolution points (getting food, killing a new species, meeting unique objectives) to acquire one or both of those abilities?
>>
Rolled 11 (1d20)

>>37613007
>>
>>37613032
This seems more of a meta thing though, not something to research. Unless Trollfister is going to hide our evolution points from us and we research them to see it.
>>
Just because we can mutate doesnt mean we control it, please OP dont make it so we can control evolution otherwise we'll end up doing nothing but that for half the game, eg slime civ rip
>>
>>37613061
I'm not sure if it's meta, it's a form of currency and we're in a shop. OP decides the amount of points we get from whatever (getting food, befriending a species, killing it), then we spend it on unlockable abilities, like Heat Resistance (Costs 2 points), and so on. Just a suggestion.
>>
>>37613068
What happened to slime civ? Though I agree, it's even worse than just handing magic to people without any limitations in a civ. So many problems that caused when running my awful machine civ.
>>
>>37613068
Could be solved if there's a cooldown and it's not something you can abuse, like with the currency suggestion or only every several turns. It's a long term reward that shouldn't get in the way of the game that much.
>>
>>37613082
Befriending a species giving us evolution points, that is not really how actual evolution works, so I would say that's meta.
>Minor rant
Evolution does not occur within an individual, despite what Pokemon has told you, it occurs within a species because of mutations and selective pressures. We have mutations and can apply selective pressures ourselves, culling, so you could call the mutate give birth, repeat evolution. But the next generation would have to be doing the birthing, or somehow donating their mutations to the queen, otherwise it's just mutations not evolution
>rant over
>>37613120
If we treat it like actual evolution, which is slow and limited, then that gives us a limitation. Or depending on how good our rolls are, high rolls not only give us better results but shorter cool downs, low rolls give us bad results and longer cool downs.
>>
Dudes, OP was relatively specific. If we want sth special, we have to try laying special eggs.

>>
>>37613148
No, of course that's not how evolution works, but it could be a reward system for meeting milestones a OP's discretion, more similar to Spore than anything. Rule of cool. I'm fine either way in how we treat it, but I think this solves a few of the issues brought forth.

You and your children are sluggish and heatstruck. As you go over the image of the hunt, you recall some stories about firebugs your mother showed you as a child. You distinctly remember them freely using their breath on the ranks of your hive -uh, ex-hive- while other firebugs engaged them in melee and emerging unharmed from the wave of flames.

As an idea dawns on you, you begin to eat parts of a firebug carcass, slowly and carefully, running your tongue all over its shell, sampling every tissue and analyzing its makeup. You think you've got the gist of it, and you're ready to try and birth some males or females with heat resistance. Their breath, however, eludes you for now.

actually, the queen is analyzing the enemy's makeup and trying to create mutant eggs to replicate what she sees. you'll be limited by a lot of things, including the queen's analytical capability (you can just lick a dragon and start knowing how to pop out dragon-bugs), the queen's current ability to control her mutation (you may get some horrorterrors if your reach exceeds your grasp) and how much food and time you have available (the queen is subject to age).

You decide to give birth to a new generation of drones, one more suitable to the harsh heat of your new environment. You as your eggs take form, your aberrant side stirs, even more violently this time. It hurts you, physically. But pain is nothing to a formian queen, and you exert your will over it, blocking its corrupting grasp and redirecting it to touch only the features you want changed.

12 new drones hatch after a few days, their carapace shining slightly red in the light. You doubt this will allow them to walk through fire unscathed, but there is a definite difference between the old drones and the new. The newcomers stand tall and energized, ready to serve you at full capacity.

You are extremely exhausted. Your egg sac burns and the heats threatens to render you unconscious.

Your remaining food will last your hive for 1.5 days at most.

This time, your drones go to the right of the cave entrance, and they return a day later. You are astonished when they tell you that half a day away, there are a series of smaller, interconnected caves, and one cavern bears a pool of water! Granted, it is unclean and tainted by sulfur, but the moisture generated by it is enough to cause the spread of a gray-blue moss throughout the cave system. As such you obtain as much of it as 21 drones can carry.

You order your drones to prepare a chamber to house larva. You pick one of the two preexisting side-caverns of your lair, and watch as they toil away at the volcanic rock, their expert three-digit hands finding just the right crevices and indents to dig at. Slowly but surely, the wall gives away. This process takes them the entire day, but by sundown, your nine regular drones are done and present you with a brood chamber. It is rough, its geometric shape slanted, but it is enough for a first batch. You let your workers rest.

Meanwhile, the twelve drones are tasked with hunting as you realize how thirsty your hive has become, and present another firebug carcass for you to drink from. Though they run into no trouble during the hunt, they do report that several firebugs have been drawing fairly close to your home. You may be detected sooner or later, and are grateful that you can produce warriors to defend your family now.

You also ponder about birthing the next queen... How were they made? Something about special food? And you think you heard something about a cycle, too. You're not sure. Mother wouldn't teach you these things until she felt ready. At least you can take solace in the knowledge that you're still young, and will remain so for decades.

You gorge yourself enough to lay 6 female eggs, and after a fade to black, your eggs are fertilized. As they develop in your womb, you prepare yourself for the assault on your senses. And sure enough, it comes, stronger than ever. You strain yourself, attempting to harness its chaotic spread, to block out its cancerous touch, to bend its will to yours. It seems to work for a while- you strengthen your daughters against the heat, you sharpen their limbs, and thicken their carapace. You lose yourself in the delight of controlling life itself, and soon, the mutation slips from your grasp.

It takes over the limbs of your warriors, corrupting it quicker than you can fix it. You try to free their appendages before they're damaged any further, but by the time you do, the mutation has spread to their chests. You screech in horror as your children are subjected to chaotic, uncontrollable changes. Pain takes over your senses, and as you fall to the floor, you turn your gaze towards your bloated egg sac, and are horrified to see it bulging and writhing beyond your control. You give your drones one last command before the pain and shock becomes unbearable, and you faint.

You wake up. Your abdomen still hurts, but not as much as before. You stand up and check your body, your arms, your legs. Everything seems to be in order. You turn your gaze to your egg say once again.

Lying in a pool of liquids lies your misshapen abdominal extension. It is veiny and discolored in some places, swollen with pustules in others. Liquids are still flowing out of the place your drones have severed it from your body. Some of your mutant eggs have spilled out of it, visibly corrupted with something you now realize you don't understand. You examine the severed appendage closer, and find that only two of the eggs can be called eggs at all, and whatever comes out of them will be completely beyond prediction.

It's because it's insects, and all you've been doing is eating and mutating. Make them individualistic or have a limit on mutations, then people might come.

>>37616475
Could be a slow day. Civ threads are also not THAT popular in the first place. The other civ thread is experiencing the same thing. Some OPs like to start a new clean civ thread after the vote with a specialized image to draw more posters.

They are your children, and you decide to give them a chance. After all, if you cast them aside for being different, you'd be no different than your mother. You order one of your drones to carry the eggs to the brood chamber. They are placed in the crude nestings on the wall, and within the day, they bloat, liquify and give way to the larvae inside. You walk up to them and examine them closer.

The first one is already the size of a larva two days from hatching. It is colored a greyish orange, and looks a lot dryer than the healthy larvae you would see back home. Still, you determine that it is alive and will hatch a lot sooner than it would otherwise.

The second one has four mouths instead of one, and is visibly veinier than a standard larva. Other than that, it appears perfectly normal, though the four mouths thing is more than enough to label it as a freak.

Two days pass, and the orange larva is already pupating. It is too large for the standard nesting, so a new, bigger one is made for it. Before it hatches, however, two intruders show up at your cave.

They are scalelings, diminutive, lizard-like humanoids no bigger than one of your drones. They're different than the ones you've seen before, however. Their skin is the color of ash, and their muscles are tightly packed, bulging from underneath their leather vests. Your drones start screeching aggressively, waiting for you to order them to attack, and the scalelings raise their iron spears in response, trying to decide if they should fight or flee.

Cluster our forces in front of the Queen, she must be protected at all costs. Fighting them with drones would be too costly and risky right now. Best to let them go and if they return slay them with our warrior brood

And don't worry OP. It takes some luck getting enough players on at once to play a civ, especially a new one. noticed most players jump in after it's been established for a thread or two

Rolled 4 (1d20)

One of the scalelings digs his feet into the ground and pulls his spear back, as if to make a stabbing motion. Power emanates from his body, like it emanated from your mother whenever she channeled the will of the Scion Mother through her. The tip of his spear begins to glow white hot, directed towards you. You instinctively release a cloud of pheromones, commanding the drones to protect you, and they fall into formation, rapidly forming a wall of flesh and chitin to protect you from these beings, whatever the cost. But the scaleling hesitates. They make sounds with their mouths, glancing at each other, glancing at you.

You try to tell them that you mean no harm, that you're just another hive like them, trying to establish a mark in the world. But they don't see your message. They're as numb to your language as all other outsiders are. The scalelings grow increasingly restless, and you think they're about to attack you. As a last resort, you offer them food with your own hands, firebug and moss dripping from your hands, in hopes that they will take what little you have that is useful to them and leave you alone.

They look confused for a second, then relax. They seem to have understood that you mean no harm. They make meaningless gestures and sounds, and leave. You hope their hive isn't hostile.
>>
>>37617395
Do it. I expect youll do pretty well at it
>>37616599
Mine always seem to run alright...
>>
Your large warrior finally hatches. Her skin is darker than usual. Her chitin is brittle compared to other warriors you've seen, and even your drones. But inbetween the cracks in her shell, there is a mild, orange glow, and she feels a lot warmer than any fomorian you've seen.

She... seems to be under your command, obeying your actions and not acting hostile, but something seems off. There is hesitation whenever she follows a command you issue, and she seems active, somewhat twitchy, at all times, always observing her surroundings, examining things she deems worthy of investigation though whatever thought process goes through her foreign mind.

You are stressed out, parched, and tired. You order your workers to dig for some water. They start working diligently, digging a tunnel underground, away from the mountain, where the rocks are softer and the temperatures are lower.

The mutant warrior looks at them, and starts to glance at you and at the workers with a confused and somewhat worried expression. Eventually, she decides to join with the workers, helping to dig, despite not having particularly suitable arms for the task at hand. Still, her sheer strength, which proves to be greater than you expected, comes in handy. Over the next few days, you hit a few gold veins, but they are thankfully easy enough to dig around, and soon, you hit an underwater reserve of water.

The water floods the lower end of the tunnel, drenching your children head to toe. The entire cave system is flooded with the smell of relief.

You take the time to swim a little. Ahhhhhh.

Barricade ourselves. Collapse or block the cave entrance and dig a few tunnels outside instead. Only ones who should be getting inside the hive are our drones and warriors. What happened with the scaly ones shouldn't happen again.

The following days, nothing evil stumbles upon your lair, and hunting goes well. You have your workers dig a big, flat room near the flooded tunnel, and bring in some moss to plant. The soft volcanic rock is moisturized as some of the water leaks into the room ever so slightly, and you plant the moss. You're pretty sure this will work eventually; you'll need to give it a day or two to grow. But before that, you need to deal with your next daughter, who is about to hatch.

The egg cracks and splits apart, and before you see your daughter, you hear her. Standing barely a head taller than a drone, she makes a constant screeching sound from her misshapen maw, surrounded by five mandibles arranged asymmetrically, two even digging into her own flesh. Her flesh is exposed, and what prevents her from bleeding out cannot even be called a carapace. It is almost slimy, and transparent, and it makes you want to not look at her anymore.

Amidst horrified eyes, she wobbles and stands up awkwardly, as her left legs are fused together at the lower part. Her smell is one of overwhelming pain.

Her sister is repulsed by her, and is barely keeping herself from attacking her, a sentiment seemingly shared by the newborn.

Yeah, drop her into the lava. And consume dem nutrients.

You don't stop your daughter from killing the newborn, and she goes ahead and sinks her forelimbs into her horrifying abomination of a sister. They pierce her at the shoulders and go all the way in. The screeching fades into a nauseating gurgle, and stops. You nod to your daughter, and she nods back, her emotions mirroring yours.

You send two of your drones to throw her body into the lava atop the mountain. When they return, you tell them not to show you a report. You want to forget this is all over.

...aaand that's where this thread ends. I'ma archive it now. If you have any questions, ask them. I'll accept criticisms, too, but keep in mind that "hivemind/insect civs are boring and mutation is OP" has already been said and taken into consideration.
>>
>>37619964
As in new thread, or as in "that's all for today folks"?

Dammit I was just about to join in, too.
>>
>>37619964

I like hivemind. It's a cool feature. Like I like my dwarves to have beards, or my elf to have pointy ears. Sure, it's a trope and all that. But a cool one, and a defining one.

Just wanted to point that out, could still be fun to have some sapients members in the hive.
>>
>>37619964
I don't agree with the anti-hivemind/mutations opinion, although I wouldn't mind individual, named hero units like our daughter at all.

Good thread. My only take was the slow turns, though you certainly stepped it up. Also a map would be nice. Maybe in Hexographer.
>>
>>37620014

the latter. I kinda wanna recollect myself, flesh out the fluff, find/draw some decent pictures and place this civ on a map I've been drawing for a while.
