Over fifty people have been slaughtered tonight. While you’re still trying to wrap your head around that fact, Kimiko’s nagging at you to take action. Your mind is occupied by something closely resembling panic, but you try to do as she says. You’re supposed to perform Konso on these spirits to send them to heaven, but you can’t seem to pull it off properly even a single time. Kimiko’s starting to lose her patience after a while, and so are you.

It takes about a dozen taps on some poor kid’s forehead with the hilt of your sword, but finally, you manage to send him on his way. The little boy’s face kept a frightened and confused expression throughout the process, a miserable face that you’ll probably remember for a while, though you had neither the time nor composure to explain the situation to him properly. “Don’t worry, kid, you’re going to heaven.” Is what you kept telling him, over and over, but it didn’t make the boy feel any better.

The other spirits, upon witnessing what you had just done to the boy, scream and run away, ignoring your attempted explanations.

The spirits were much slower than you, and they screamed enough to make it easy to find them, but there were just too many, and they spread out all across the town. Tonight’s patrol turned into a wild goose chase that lasted for hours, all the way until morning.

The sun starts rising before you’re finished with the job; you’ve managed to perform Konso on only about half of them, that being a couple dozens of spirits. Kimiko manages to catch up to you. You’re pretty far from where you split off, which is where you stumbled upon the crowd of dead people. She’s gasping for air, holding onto her knees - she must have sprinted all the way here. Obviously, the body Kimiko is occupying is not at all used to feats like that, and is now rebelling in defiance.

“I checked the buildings around the scene... dead bodies in just about every apartment,” Kimiko mutters, frantically breathing, placing a hand over her probably hurting chest. “Did you get all of them?” She asks, to which you shake your head.

Fatigue isn’t a condition you expected to be experiencing as a spirit. While the sensations are somewhat different from what you would be feeling in a body of flesh, the effect is largely the same - it’s weighing down on you, making it hard to move. Kimiko seems to notice that.

“Let’s call the patrol off for tonight. Well, I say tonight, but it’s already morning. That Hollow will probably come back eventually, so you need to keep yourself in good shape. We’ll finish this next time.”

>Finish the job, no matter how much time it takes.
>Go rest.
>”Why’s chasing these guys around so urgent that you scared that Hollow off, anyway? I could have taken it. The spirits, well, nothing would have happened to ‘em even if I took a while.”
>”How do you think they’re going to explain the deaths of all these people? I doubt that waving it off as ‘an accident’ is gonna cut it.”
>>

>"Is there any way to hold these spirits down?"
>>
>>37634597
And then we'll see what 'heaven' looks like and feel pretty bad for sending the kid there.
I am waiting for that moment, to point out so many things about their afterlife, man.
>>
>>37634779
Yep, this. Bad call from Kimiko, it would have only taken us a few more seconds.

“I wanna keep going.” You persist, but Kimiko shakes her head.

“You probably can’t even chase them down anymore. If you mess up a Konso too much, who knows what'll happen? Don’t worry about it. If a Hollow crops up and starts threatening them, I’ll tell you right away. We’ll finish this tonight.”

“You were the one being urgent, Kimiko,” You note, placing a hand unoccupied by your sword on your hip. ”Chasing these guys around was apparently so important that you scared that Hollow off. I could have taken it. The spirits, well, nothing would have happened to ‘em even if I took a while.”

Kimiko sighs, folding her arms.

“You messed up, Clarissa. When you failed to take it out in one go, there was no more telling how much time it would have taken. Hollows are highly unpredictable and deceptively strong, even the weakest ones. If the Hollow tried to go after the spirits, what would you do? You weren’t at any advantage, Clarissa.” She sighs again.

“And that’s not even all,” She continues after a brief silence, her voice springing up as if she just remembered something. “Do you know how many spirits there were? Having that many of them packed so closely together would have attracted even more Hollows. They’re like sharks, and spirits are the raw, bloody meat thrown into the water. They’re dispersed pretty thinly now, and that’s actually for the best.”

“...Alright, I get it. I messed up. I’ll get better, won’t happen again. But I can’t leave those people running around; especially after you said that their presence is gonna get more Hollows into town. Just go back to my house; I’ll take care of it. Though, save me some pain - is there a way to keep these idiots from running?”

“...There’s a spell I can use, but I can’t really keep up with you in this body, so it won’t really help. I can’t teach it to you, either. Clarissa, I really think that you should-“

(1/2)
>>
>>37635757
“Shut up already. I’ll get it done, and that’s final.”

Kimiko looks like she wants to protest again, but you just walk away.

You spend until noon chasing the spirits down. You didn’t really keep count, but you don’t think you’ve found all of them. There are probably a few more left, hiding somewhere, but you can’t find them, and you don’t have the strength to keep looking.

Just a few probably won’t get that much Hollow attention.

...

After getting back home, you return to your real body, which still lied around in your room. That didn’t do anything to ease the fatigue you’ve been experiencing, except that now it felt like a mental kind of exhaustion. You plop down on your bed, feeling tempted to just faint immediately. Before you manage to do that, Kimiko enters your room.

You wanted to ignore her and just go on with sleep, but she suddenly rains down items on your stomach, little rectangular shaped, flat boxes that bounce off your skin, but not before unpleasantly poking you with their edges. You grumble something mean at the girl, who smiles in response.

“Here, these are Suzu-chan’s CDs. I want you to listen to them and see if you can find a clue on where she might be. Maybe the lyrics to her songs have some kind of hint we could use to find her.” She chitters sarcastically.

“What? Why are we still looking for that idol girl? The Hollow I fought probably ate her. Come on, even I can figure out what happened. A Hollow probably offed her by dropping a spotlight on her head, and then ate her soul. What, you think she killed all of those people?”

“Of course not. I’m just kidding. But I think her music’s kind of good, so you should give it a listen. Try to relax. And for what happened tonight... I suspect that Hollow did it, even if it does not quite fit.”

(2/3)
>>
>>37635788
“What do you mean by that? You said Hollows kill people sometimes, right?”

“That’s true. But they don’t slaughter everyone they see, and even if they were to do that, they would devour those souls immediately. But, as you saw, that Hollow did nothing with the souls other than stare at them.”

There is a brief silence as you weigh her words with your barely conscious mind, and as Kimiko racks her brain over the mystery. She gives up with a sigh.

“Anyway, you think her concert in Karakura was televised?”

“Probably. I mean, she’s no Don Kanonji, but it’s not like there’s anything more interesting going on in Karakura. Why?”

“I’m just bored. I’ll look it up on the web. Your computer’s working, right?” You nod at her. “Then, in the meantime, you listen to those CDs and try to relax.”

“What the hell? Go investigate! You’re probably the only one who can figure out what happened!”

“What do you think I was doing while you were out playing tag with ghosts?”

“Hey, fuck you.”

“I only managed to find out that a Hollow killed all of them. You’ll have to fight it again eventually, I'm sure, so rest already. They say it’s easier to sleep while listening to good music, so give that a try!”

You look at the transparent cases with plain, white discs inside.

“...Are these pirated, Kimiko? Where’d you get these?”

“Hm? Oh, I bought them at a shady shop down the street.” You glare at her.

“Don’t walk around in that body without my permission. I’m serious.”

“Don’t worry. I was discreet.” She waves you off, sitting down behind your desk.

You fetch your ancient CD player, get your headphones on, and try to listen to the music.

...It doesn’t work. You try everything you can think of to make it work, but it just doesn’t play anything.

>”These CDs ain’t working, Kimiko. You got ripped off.”
>See if they work on your computer.
>Forget about them. Get some shuteye.

“These CDs ain’t working. You got ripped off, Kimiko.” You tell her, but it’s like she’s not even listening, silently staring at the screen of your computer.

“If you really want me to listen to that stuff, you’ll have to play it from the computer. You pirated them anyway, so I’m sure you’ve got no qualms with playing it from the internet. Just turn the speakers up, alright?” You say, again receiving no response. What is she looking at with such fascination, anyway? You don’t hear the sounds of a concert emerging from the speakers, so that’s not it.

“Hey, do you hear me?” You get off your bed, walking closer.

“...’Aiko’, huh.” She suddenly murmurs. You didn’t expect to hear that name. It sends something akin to a shock through your sleepy consciousness, effortlessly turning the fatigue into a piercing anxiety.

“What did you just say?” Your eyes widen. You look at the girl, and then at the screen she keeps her eyes on so stubbornly. On it are the two of you, on a photo you took a long time ago. One of many stupid selfies taken while you were goofing off together.

“So you were friends?” Kimiko whispers curiously. Your breath stills itself in your throat, and you’re not even sure what to say.

”It’s none of your business. Who said that you can dig through my personal shit?” You get her hand off the mouse, and close the image viewer. There’s a folder full of pictures. You managed to completely forget that you have these. You highlight all of them. You... you’d rather not have them around anymore.

“Are you sure you want to do that? You’ll probably miss her. I think you should hold on to all the memories you can.” The girl murmurs.

You hesitate. You were about to delete them, but now, you’re not sure.

(1/2)
>>
>>37637190
“I won’t ask you what happened, but I don’t think you should do anything rash. If she was an important person to you, then maybe you’ll regret doing this.”

“...Aiko was my girlfriend,” You mutter, forcing out every word. “I killed her.”

“Clarissa. If my being in this body bothers you, then I’ll...”

“No! No, you need it. Of course it bothers me, but you need it. I’m not going to make it harder on you just because of that. That would be... that would be selfish.”

The girl doesn’t answer. She just quietly looks at you, waiting for you to do something. You glance back at the computer screen. The back of your throat hurts. Your heart is beating frantically.

>Delete the pictures. Aiko is a thing of the past. A past you’ll need to forget if you want to keep your sanity.
>Keep the pictures. Even if it hurts, you shouldn’t forget.

We were discussing this last thread. Look at the prose and foreshadowing.

That she was our girlfriend is curious. Why we killed her or the circumstances around her death are intriguing.

I WANT CLOSURE. And possibly to find her ghost...unless far down the line in this quest she shows up as an Arrancar.

That would be sweet.
>>
>>37637335
To elaborate further however some of us did assume that we killed the person since we did have the pipe in the start of the quest
>>
>>37637372
Arrancar?

Also finding her ghost might be awful if she screams at us for killing her or comes back as one of these "hollows."
>>
>>37637396
well atleast now we know we killed her for sure now all that remains is a why.
>>
>>37637503
Random guesses.

She was possessed! She was leaving us for some one else, we were just a phase!
>>
>>37637536
She fucked someone before marriage
Can we agree that this is good enough reason?
>>
>>37637590
No? Unless she was supposed to marry us then went off to fuck someone else?

Or it was actually blackmail and she was going to out that Clarissa was gay. Of course I'm not sure how much of an impact that would have in japan. But if her family is Russian as others have suggested then that could be devastating.

Plus : Normal Human Soul with a severed chain of fate that remains on earth

Hollow: A Plus that has remained on earth too long after death, the chain of fate has started to eat itself until it is gone leaving a hole in its chest. heart becomes a white mask, concealing the hollow's identity & granting it new form & power based on its heart. It also gains the insatiable hunger. Weak hollows subsist on the spiritual pressure in the Hueco Mundo. Some feed on pluses, shinigami, & other hollows.

Menos Grande
-Gillian: After a point in their growth, normal hollows are possessed by instinct to congregate en masse & feed off one another. They merge into towering goliaths with little intelligence and no identity. Here they lose all their unique powers and develop the Cero, a destructive beam of condensed spiritual energy.
-Adjuchas: Sometimes one of the hollows that formed the gestalt of a gillian has a strong enough sense of identity that it takes over the gestalt after a variable amount of time has passed. The mask reshapes to its old shape and as it consumes it becomes smaller, denser, and stronger. Its unique powers return to it as its body is encased in white armor not unlike the hollow mask. Barely remembering its time alive, the Adjuchas must continue to consume strong spirits and evolve, lest it backslides into becoming a gillian with no chance of regaining any sense of self again.
-Vastro Lorde: Sometimes born spontaneously of the vaste wastes of Hueco Mundo or the ultimate goal and evolution of the Adjuchas, these incredibly rare hollows are closer in size and shape to humans. They are the strongest of hollows and it is believed it would only take ten vastro lordes working in concert to raze Soul Society.

Arrancar: A hollow who has removed their mask & sealed their unique powers into a sword similar to a Shinigami's. A hybrid of Hollow and Shinigami who has regained a measure of their identity and in some cases their humanity.

“I don’t think I deserve to have these memories.” You say, but you move your hand away, leaving the pictures be.

“Clarissa, if you ever want to talk about it, then I’ll hear you out.” Kimiko looks out of her element. She may not be used to calming someone else down. She’s trying to help, that much is clear, but she’s unintentionally coming off as cold through her demeanor.

And... you’re not sure that you can talk about anything related to Aiko while Kimiko is still in her body. You don’t want to pull her out of there and inhibit her recovery just to cry into her shoulder, either.

“I’ll manage.” You say. Kimiko nods and you can’t help but notice how hard she’s trying to look understanding. You step away from the computer and head towards your bed. You stop halfway, another question popping up in your head.

“Kimiko... What happens to ghosts that are eaten by Hollows?” The Shinigami pauses. She is probably hesitant to be upfront about it.

“They’re taken out of the spiritual cycle, and they cease to exist,” She’s blunt and straight to the point. You appreciate that. You appreciate it far more than if she were to try and soften the blow by not giving you the whole truth. Seeing you grit your teeth, Kimiko suddenly continues, as if flustered. “But it’s not so bad, actually. It’s... eternal rest. Even the place you call heaven isn’t quite... as peaceful, I would say.”

“...What?”

(1/2)
>>
>>37638385
“Don’t worry about it, Clarissa. That place is where they safely spend their time as spirits before disappearing and returning to the spiritual cycle. They wait for reincarnation while they’re there, essentially. It’s better than if they were to stay in this world, because here, there is a risk of a Hollow attacking them. If you ask me, though... I don’t really think any of the outcomes are worse or better than the other. Either way, it’s death, and... and on a personal scale, all I’ve said is really just a bunch of semantics that ultimately don't mean a single thing.” Kimiko concludes.

“That’s a very pessimistic way of looking at things... I think. And I’m not quite sure I get what you’re mumbling about. But... I’m sure that wherever Aiko is, she’s fine. Just because you don’t know what happens when spirits die, doesn’t have to mean it’s all bad. Who knows, maybe there’s another layer of life after death, and you just don’t know about it?”

You say, smirking weakly. Kimiko is trying to make you feel better in her own way, you can tell, and you can’t really help but find it amusing. Even if she’s actually lying her ass off just to make you feel better, it’s still funny. Or maybe you’re just losing it.

The Shinigami looks relieved at your smile.

“So... Clarissa. You’re into girls, huh?” Kimiko suddenly redirects the conversation with all the elegance of a drunken elephant. Your smirk turns into a loud guffaw - you really did not see that coming. Though it still hurts, you decide to trust Kimiko a little more and go with... with whatever plan she came up with. It was probably for the best.

>”Sure, I like girls. You don’t have a problem with that, do you?”
>”Yeah, I like girls. What, are you interested, Kimiko?”
>”No, Aiko was just... an exception.”

”Yeah, I like girls. What, are you interested, Kimiko?” You give her a grin, or at least try to, though you can’t pull it off properly and just end up mumbling and looking away. This is a bit too much. You feel a little sick. You hide it, but... it’ll take a while to get used to, that’s for sure. Accepting that she’s dead with a constant contradictory image before your eyes is going to be hard.

And Kimiko’s keeping an annoying silence. She’s smiling, you can feel it.

“I am interested in you. You’re way more than I bargained for when I made this pact with you. You’re a pretty poor Shinigami, but you’re an interesting person, that’s for sure. Though, I guess I’ll have to exercise caution whenever I’m walking around without pants on.”

“Aha, you fucking retard. I’m a lesbian, not a molester. Make yourself as comfortable as you like, since you’ll be living here anyway.” And you highly doubt that you’ll ever get anything but nauseous while looking at Kimiko through Aiko.

You’re starting to calm down, at least in comparison to what you were going through just a brief while ago.

If it’s just a week, you can bear it.

Again, you look at your bed, wanting to do nothing but just lie down and sleep like the smallest, weakest baby.

But suddenly, you hear the door to your room open.

This fucking guy walks in. He doesn’t even knock. You keep telling him to always knock! He only does it when he feels like it.

The young man around your age, with his thin-framed glasses, his neatly trimmed dark hair, and his spotless clothes that look like he’s just finished cleaning and ironing them, is your brother.

Your twin brother, in fact, or so your parents claim. Nobody would ever figure that out on their own, including the two of you, but that’s how it is. At the very least, you were born a few seconds before him, so you are technically his older sister, and you get to flaunt that around to annoy him.

Putting a hand into one of his pockets, he starts speaking, feeling completely no shame about his barging in uninvited and without permission.

“My bus was late, so I won’t say anything about nobody coming out to properly meet me.” He stops, as if waiting for you to say something.

“...Huh? Yeah, welcome back, Paul, whatever. Knock before you enter, you asshole. Well, enjoyed your summer camp?”

“It wasn’t a summer camp! I was back in our homeland, interning for an important company! You know this!” He’s only making such an effort to explain himself because of Kimiko, you bet.

You both glare at each other.

“Well. Are you going to introduce us?” He says. You wave him off.

“Sure. That’s, uh, Aiko. And this is Paul, my brother.”

“Nice to meet you, Aiko. I hope you’re enjoying your stay at our house.”

“Nice to meet you, uh... Poru.”

“I-it’s not ‘Poru’! I understand that you’re japanese, but please, I urge you to try and pronounce it properly!” He pleas. You wave him off again.

“Don’t bother. He’ll be leaving just about now, anyway. Oh, by the way, Aiko’ll be staying at our house for a while. Around a week, maybe?” You casually bring it up again. You don’t actually care what he has to say on the subject.

“What? You... I’m sure you haven’t asked for permission from our parents, who are still out for one more week, but... have you at least asked Aiko’s parents about it? Aiko, you’re still underage, isn’t that right?” He scrutinizes her head to toe. Kimiko- that is, Aiko, looks at him with wide eyes, as if baffled.

“Me? Underage?” She suddenly breaks out into a giggle. Not something you or your brother expected, but... “No, no, don’t worry, I got the permission.” She says through her chuckle.

“...Very well, then,” He raises a brow, but continues. “Before we discuss this some more, I have one more question,” You groan, telling him to just go already. He persists. “Who was it that flooded our fridge with packages of rice and jars of mayonnaise?”

Kimiko stops giggling. It’s abrupt enough for both of you to notice. Though, Paul is looking at you, and not at her. It seems that he’s made up his mind already.

...Who keeps their rice in the fridge?

>”I don’t fucking know who did it. Stop looking at me like that.”
>”It wasn’t me! Aiko said something about being hungry, so it must have been her!”

He looks at you with all the trust he’d give to a runaway mental patient. He then frowns.

“Not only are you lying, but you are also attempting to place the blame on our guest. Truly disgraceful.”

“How awful, Clarissa.” The girl chimes in, giggling. You glare at her.

“The next thing I’ve been meaning to discuss was kitchen duties. Now, I already said before that I’ll be cooking for the two of us myself whenever father isn’t around. And I’ll continue cooking for two, even in the presence of our guest. As punishment for your lies, I won’t be cooking for you, and you’ll have to make do with what you’ve filled our fridge with,” He pauses, folding his arms. He suddenly shivers. “Now, I still fondly remember what your experiences with cooking were, but I’m sure... no, I hope that our rice cooker won’t combust because of you.”

You want to protest, but all this talk about food makes you remember that you haven’t eaten in two days. You really, really doubt that Kimiko was feeding you while you were out.

And there it is - your stomach growls. Kimiko takes out her phone, confirming that the noise is not, in fact, the roar of a Hollow.

Paul looks around, his eyes eventually stopping on the only bed in your room. He sighs, probably coming to a conclusion that’s completely wrong.

“Well, truth be told, I’m glad to be home.” He finally mutters, walking away.

“...Did you get permission from Aiko’s parents?” You ask Kimiko when your brother walks away.

“Mhm. Otherwise, I’m sure there’d be people banging on your door by now. Aiko’s parents think she’s fine. I explained everything to them.”

“You mean lied.”

“That’s true. But it’s better that way, isn’t it? At least for now, everyone’s happy.”

You’re too tired to argue about whether it’s right or wrong to lie.

“We really need to talk about your habit of going out without my permission.”

“Don’t worry. I was discreet.”

...

The rest of the day went relatively well. The constant sight of your dead girlfriend wasn’t enough to disrupt your awful hunger, even though it was certainly trying to do that. After being through with your meal, which consisted of a few bowls of rice that you didn’t actually add mayonnaise to (who in their right mind would do that?), you think that you won’t have any more problems with eating around her.

In other words, you’re getting used to her. Whether this is for better or worse, you can’t really say. At the very least, there is a selfish, sickening relief that you won’t be getting into trouble with the law because of what you did.

Is this fair? You are now someone who protects and saves the people of this town, and you are receiving no reward in return. Maybe if you try hard enough, maybe if you kill enough Hollows, maybe if you send enough souls to heaven, maybe if you save enough living people... maybe you’ll repent for what you did?

It’s not right for you to think this way, you know that, and yet you can’t help it.

You drop on your bed. Kimiko’s doing something at your computer again. She connected a pair of headphones to it - probably actually wants to watch that concert she’s talked about before.

There’s something on your mind.

>”What are Hollows, really? Where do they come from, and why do they eat souls?”
>”What is heaven like, Kimiko? You’ve never really talked about it in any detail. “

Suuure.
And the head of R&D is a swell guy. And the CC doesn't have any nickname about some of his past actions. I hear the 11th captain came from the kindest, most civilized place in the entire afterlife.

Mayuri has been really entertaining recently though. Praise the sun god.

The ones in charge protect the people and stuff, but awful class inequality is not something one would have to deal with in the afterlife. This may partially be because it's full of old people, who happen to be stubborn.

Between Earth and Soul Society is the hollow world. When a Hollow is on Earth or somehow in Soul Society they become detectable.

I see. Sort of. What's hueco mundo? I'm still iffy on this soul society that's pseudo heaven right?

Kimiko puts the headphones around her shoulders, giving you a curious, thoughtful look.

“Soul Society is a nice place,” She mutters in a reminiscent tone. “It’s more peaceful than this world, even if the living conditions are a little dated by comparison. You never go hungry, your aging slows down, and there are practically no threats to your new life. It’s a life like any other, but, I’d say that nine times out of ten, it’s better there than it is out here.”

“Nine times out of ten? Dated living conditions? Just where was I sending people to?”

“Are you ignoring the good parts on purpose?” The girl pouts.

“You at least get to be with the people you loved before, right?” The question causes a tense, momentary silence.

“Clarissa, a lot of people die around the world, and a lot of people go to Soul Society. There is a chance to find your relatives, but it’s a tiny one.”

“That’s... pretty bleak.”

“You’re overreacting. People can send stuff over from this world to Soul Society, so we get music, computers, games, foods, kitchenware... all sorts of things. It’s not like it’s a stone age back there. Don’t dwell on it too much. For spirits, Soul Society is a far better place to be in than this world.” She stands up, approaching your bed. You unwillingly recoil back a little bit.

“Now, sleep. We have a really rough night ahead of us.”

As if hypnotized, your eyes obediently close, seeing Aiko’s smile as the last thing before you fall into a dreamless sleep.

You wake up. Shortly after you do, Kimiko’s phone beeps. You’re glad that’s not what woke you up. Otherwise, you wouldn’t feel so refreshed.

It’s dark outside, with only the pale street lights dimly illuminating your room through the window. Kimiko is leaning against it, glancing at you.

You sit up in your bed.

“Are you ready?” She asks in a whisper, fitting a crimson glove over her frail hand.

“Yeah. Let’s get to the bottom of this tonight.”
>>
>>37642015
Soul Society is a near endless plane that is full of Wilderness and urban areas. Everything is made of spirit particles and you only become hungry if you have spiritual powers. Most people live there and some eventually die of a slowed aging and return to the cycle of souls if not struck down by a disease.

At the center of Soul Society is the Seretei or the court of pure souls. That is where the Shinigami are held up with the 13 Court Guard Squads tasked with defending soul society and the world of the living from hollows and other threats, to maintain the balance.

High above the Court is a pocket dimension where the Soul King's palace awaits.

It's spanish for 'Hollow World'. It's not hell, that's different, and people have been calling it Mexico in the fandom.

>People can send stuff over from this world to Soul Society
If your part of the Nobility or the Gotei 13. People living just outside the walls didn't look like they had much access to that.

Clarissa being skeptical, ignoring the good. Kimiko being slightly biased, tiptoeing around the bad.
