"Are you heading back?" You ask, staring at the Technician before you. You've been conscious to keep your distance.

"Negative. I'm overdue on my rounds. Rogue nameless farm monsters and players, and I farm them. It keeps their spirits low and my cred-chip fat, especially when they show up with something shiny. You should try it sometime." He gives a devilish grin, laughing for a bit. "I think you and I are a lot alike. If you'd fancy, you might stop by my workshop on the north end of town when I'm online, mm?"

Your UI pings.

> [[ Contact Request: Smith ]]

“'l'll think about it.” You respond, and fiddle with the Unique Identifier's interface for a moment before figuring out how to access your Contacts. You accept, and the Technician—Smith—is added to the empty list, a picture of his face accompanying his name. “Thanks for the help.”

“You're very welcome.” He nods, then stalks toward the opposite cave entrance. “Bye, now.”

You follow his instructions, and make your way towards Averron City proper. Footsteps echo through the tunnels around you; you maneuver carefully through caves lit by luminescent stone outcroppings. Nearby, a waterfall pours from a small rift in the ceiling, rolling gently off rocks and running through a gap into the foggy abyss below. Faintly glowing mushrooms grow in earthen patches in the corners of covered tunnels and caves. It grows cold. You feel uneasy, like something could be watching you from the darkness, and decide to pick up your pace.

The header appears as you enter the city, and a welcoming chime indicates you've gained a level. Discovery EXP, most likely. You'll check your UI when you get a spare moment.

“Welcome.” There's a pike-wielding man at the pillars that mark the city entrance, with a UI about his waist—a player. “New arrival?”

You nod. Beyond the entrance, you can see lanterns strung between the metal buildings flanking the sidewalks, and hear the chatter of people on the streets. There's a lot of players, more than you can count, and you can see more in the windows of houses and standing over the tables of market stalls.

Behind you, a few other players are stumbling toward the city. Some of look about as lost as you do, obviously new; you wonder if they had a welcome wagon as warm as yours. Among the group, you spy a few nameless; your hand eases around the hilt of your sword, still warm from earlier use. “This is Averron, huh? Anything I should know before I go in?”

“Nothing you won't find out before long. The market square is on that side of town, and player housing is to the north, if you can afford it.” He leans back, sitting on a pile of wooden crates. “We use the tavern as sort of a quest hub, if you're ever at a loss of things to do; mostly, everyone's trying to get to the surface, but there's plenty of stuff that can help further below. I'd suggest joining a guild, or finding a party. Some of the top ones so far are recruiting.”

I might be a bit bias, since I used to start guilds with friends, and the game is early enough that nothing is too big or picky.

“Guild, huh?” You ask. “Got any suggestions?”

“Everyone is still basically new to the game, so there's a lot of people jumping on the bandwagon. I don't get it, myself—it takes quite a few creds to start a guild, and most of 'em are going to fizzle out soon. You can't start one without five charter members, and the majority of the ones running around don't have more than eight total.” He shrugs. “There's no real leadership. Players die, there's conflicts of interest. Everyone wants to get their names out, but nothing gets done?”

“Which ones are the largest?” You ask. The group of newbies behind you is starting to crowd a little ways back, listening intently.

“The alliance surrounding Averron City is made up of three guilds. To my understanding, Disposable Heroes is leading by numbers. I'm pretty sure the name was supposed to be a joke, but so far they've been pretty good at galvanizing suicidal charges toward a unified purpose. Their officers are pretty chill, though—you'll probably run into Andor, who's sort of a personality around town. You won't get that tight-knit feeling with them, but if you join up, you'll never have a hard time finding a party.”

He continues. “Right behind them is the Writ Keepers, but they're mostly crafters and Artificers. I've heard they're really into roleplaying—moreso than everyone else, anyway, cause it's kind of hard not to roleplay in a game like this. The Crimson Guardians are in third. They've got some of the highest level players in the game so far, and they usually keep to themselves and party privately; I've been told they actually have an application process! Their leader handles all of their negotiations, and she is a /notorious/ hardass. There's a lot of smaller guilds that are pretty friendly, too. You might like that. I'd check the tavern for recruiters, or try and start your own if you think you've got the sway.”

> [[ 1/4 ]]
>>
>>37687960

“I see. What about the nameless?” A bit of nervous shuffling from behind you; you're still gripping your weapon, ready to lash out with a spinning strike. “Are they a problem here?”

“We keep it under control. Members of the alliance ensure that this territory stays neutral, and that there's no fighting inside the city. There's some sizeable guilds that aren't part of the alliance, though; Freakshow is getting bigger every minute. Most of their recruits are pissed off nameless, and there's accusations of them just being an organized PK guild. The rest of the Averron Guard keeps a good handle on the place, but I'd be careful.” He folds his arms, and looks at the group over your shoulder. “That means all of you. Don't wander about the warehouse district alone. Averron isn't that big of a city, but it's still easy to get lost. Got that?”

“Mhm. Do the guilds have halls? What about player housing—you said it's expensive, right? Where does the money go?” You ask.

“Guild Halls are near the housing district. Everything over there is a safe haven of sorts. You can't bust into houses uninvited, and PVP is disabled inside; it's only like that in houses and dungeons, that we've seen so far.” He says. “If one of the guilds took this territory, they'd reap all the rent from housing and decide how high the tax is; as it is now, they've set up an agreement to split it between themselves and put it towards the effort to reach the surface.”

“My ass.” A roguish character pipes up from behind you. He's got a hooded cloak, leather gauntlets, and boots of some sort of reptile's skin; he's slouched a bit, and his features are softly carved, a bit feminine. “Like they're not skimming half off the top? Have you /seen/ the Guardians' leader?”

“We've no reason to disbelieve them.” The guardsman responds. “And as a member of the Averron Guard, I've a personal responsibility to trust the current ruling powers.”

> [[ 2/4 ]]
>>
>>37688031

“So, are there NPCs?” You ask.

“Few. You'll recognize them, as they're humanoid, but not human.” The guardsman nods. “They handle all of the activities that are true cred-sinks, like starting guilds and purchasing food and starter gear. There's also some quest-givers; all the NPCs seem killable, but we're abiding by a policy not to. They've got enormous HP totals, and we haven't determined whether or not they're a renewable resource.”

“I see. What's down below?” You ask. “Dungeons?”

“Something like that.” He says. “I've been down once or twice—there's cave systems populated with monsters, as well as a bunch of lost city, temple-esque stuff. The Writ Keepers have a thread up on one of the message boards theorizing that all of this is a lower stratum, a world that sank from up above, but there's no way to know without exploring more down there. Dont go too deep alone.”

> [[ 3/4 ]]
>>
>>37688096

“Alright, then. One more thing. The Averron Guard is a guild, then—and you just guard this city? Why's that?” You ask. “Aren't there better things to do than sit here?”

“Mm, I guess. But it's relaxing, and the alliance members pay us well. This game is amazing, no matter what you're doing. Everything here feels real enough to mean something. And it's good experience, when a nameless goes rogue or a monster strays too close to the town.” He responds, then laughs. “That all the questions?”

“Yeah, sorry. Just trying to get a handle on the state of things. It's been nice meeting you.” You nod. “Thanks for the help.”

“No problem! One of us will be here if you need anything.” He waves you off, and you proceed into Averron. You pass under lanterns, and into the city streets; players wave you and other newcomers toward market stalls, boasting weapons and armor, bows and arrows. There's a fountain in the center of the city with a beautiful-looking statue, and plenty of people are crowding around it.

“Man, don't you just hate those guys?” The hooded character from a moment ago deliberately runs to your side to catch up to you. “This is a fuckin' game! We should be able to do whatever we want! Right?”

Guild-wise I vote give the Crimson Guardians a shot once we're a bit steadier on our feet and know how everything works a bit better. Seems like they'd be up our street with the whole surprisingly capable at combat thing.

Not so keen on Writ Keepers, I don't see the need to pick an extra roleplayey guild when we can just roleplay as much as we want anyway.

For now I reckon just find some other low level players to party up at the tavern or something and get an idea of how the interfaces, mechanics, etc all work out.

Also, for our XP, I honestly think we should increase HP. Someone has already been able to deal a quarter of our HP in damage -- that's cutting it a bit close, in my book. I'd rather be able to have us take a blow and keep fighting, you know?
>>
>>37688553
* Artificer: Artificers are named for their ability to infuse weapons and armor with energy. They are a supportive archetype that can harness elemental abilities, as well as make powerful equipment to be used by themselves or others.
* Technician: The Technician is a supportive archetype that can create a variety of machines to serve in and out of combat. Dedicated Technicians can maximize the effectiveness of their abilities by choosing from one of a number of specializations.
Technicians not the same as artificer. I mean I am cool with just buying a weapon. And having npc's do it. but I think long run a player may provide us "small" bonuses that might add up. as they upgrade it.
that's assuming a lot though.
>>37688649
I think we'd be better increasing our mastery to get a skill instead.
I say offensive and get abilities that will let us destroy enemies before they can score hits.
Like what we did in our first battle.
Also armor should help with that.
But since we're going to a tavern anyway. We should talk to a brawler and figure out recommendations.
>>
>>37688649
>increasing HP
Bad idea in my opinion, but it depends on what type of warrior and what sub class we want to be.
If you want to be a tank sure pump HP, but i doubt people would want to be one, when we picked brawler and are planning on picking a techy as a secondary.

“I suppose.” You shrug, continuing in the direction of the tavern.

“Nngh. You don't think so?” He groans.

“I don't see why you think they shouldn't be allowed to make a guard rotation.”

“Eh, it's not /just/ them. All the guilds that are already on top—they're acting like they own the world cause they're just a little ahead.”

“They seem to be doing alright so far. I imagine there's a lot of gossip, but I don't have any reason to disbelieve either.” You recall what the guardsman said; so far, the goal of this game seems to be to reach the surface, and that's not something it sounds like any player can do alone. “Are you new?”

“Yeah. I just finished my first dungeon run. Some sweet drops,” He gestures to his boots as the two of you approach the tavern exterior, “And crafting materials too. I dunno what to do with 'em yet. What about you? Liking the game so far?”

“I just started. Having a blast so far.” You say. “What was the dungeon like?”

“It was a branch of the ruins down below. They're pretty expanse; it was a close fight, but we managed to beat a boss. My party was great, too.” He smiles. “There was this girl, Circe. Total cutie—real scrapper. We split on the way up, but I'm really hoping to bump into her again in town.”

“Mm...” You grimace a bit. He seems so excited, you're not sure you have the heart to tell him. “That's great. I'll have to check it out myself soon.”

“You're heading to the right place, then. Looking for a party, or a guild?” He chuckles.

“Don't know. Little of both.” As you pass through the double-doors, the dark atmosphere gives way to a surprisingly home-like environment. There's quiet chatter from all about, though it's not as loud as it was outside. The place has a sort-of fantasy flair; there's a traditional bulletin board, and it looks like there's a few people seated at tables around the place, posting on the local message boards or making contact calls via UI.

There's a few shady types, posted up in the corners of the place: the usual fare. There's an NPC bartender—a raccoon-esque humanoid in studded leather—selling drinks from behind the counter, while a female character with long hair and maxed bust size is playing the role of tavern wench. A few people are investigating the bulletin board; there's a ragtag group at a nearby table, and a nearby girl in a form-fitting outfit appears to be explaining something to a small crowd.

“Yo, check it.” Your companion elbows you in the side, pointing to a heavily-armored lance wielder at the bar; he's wearing a tabard with a red insignia. “Guardian.”

“I want to talk to that guy in a minute.” You respond to the kid. “Don't ruin it for me, alright?”

“No promises!” He laughs and runs off, bounding into the tavern and inserting himself into the middle of a crowd of strangers. You groan audibly, then make your way over to the girl. She's leaned up against the wall, a pair of goggles around her neck, and seems to be in a bit of a trance, thinking carefully about her words and pausing occasionally to sigh wistfully.

“Hence, we believe that the ruins beneath are part of an old city that was once on the surface of Sylvetica.” She says. “But it's difficult to believe with the structures of these caves the way they are. True, we've mined and excavated much of this place already—but that's only expounded on existing structure. There's no way all of these caves could be natural, the way the bridges have been built.”

“Or, it could, if a boon from the Celestials counts.” A robed man adjacent to her chimes in—you notice that the rest of the group isn't contributing, so much as listening intently. “We can't discount the religion of the old Sylveticans, and the Materialization Altar in the town square proves that those gods are very real, and are very willing to cause tangible effects in our world.”

“Only one Celestial Artifact has been created in Averron, though.” The girl responds. “Two, if you count the city itself.”

“Is that not enough?”

“It isn't.” She shakes her head. “We don't know enough, not nearly. There are rumors of Celestial items in other cities, but they're spoken only in whispers. The Unique Interface can only access local message boards, though I've been digging at a way to amplify the signal.”

Roleplayers—no, Writ Keepers. Damn, that guardsman wasn't joking.

“If we could find further evidence underground—a place of worship, or perhaps another Altar.” The robed man says. “Celestial Gems, even. Do you think it would tell us what we need to know?”

“At least, it would give us an advantage over the competition.” She grins, then turns toward you; the rest of the crowd follows her gaze, as she continues. “You're awfully quiet, newblood. Just here to appreciate the scenery?”

Guys I think I've come up with a master plan

Level up -> Do stuff -> Become Tech Knight -> Begin stirring up Nameless -> Do stuff -> Start and lead a Nameless revolution -> Do stuff -> Kill everybody -> ??? -> Profit and make it to the surface

Nigga soon enough it would be us who would need help against them, unless we lose our id they will back stab us, just so that they can get an ID.
>>
>>37691220
Here's a better plan
Get a mighty axe -> travel the land bringing the power of rock to the people -> Master music based brawling -> form a band of like minded individuals -> Master music so powerful that it can alter the world then punch stuff with it
>>
>>37691307
But we already have Quest Quest for that.
>>
>>37691361
well damn plan b then
Level up -> find something big and dangerous like a big ass fire elemental -> become a cleric of it spreading the gospel of destruction -> make the entity more powerful by feeding it powerful items as holy sacrifices -> get others to join our cult

and praise Ragnaros
>>
>>37691442

Cleric or knight doesn't matter as long as we use a nice bludgeoning weapon imbued with it's power.

I love me some bashing weapons, no finesse or subtlety just force
>>
>>37691442
How about... we find out what's going on in general first? Before we start making arbitrary long term plans?

Also, big and dangerous entity that can think independently... Are you assuming AI or a member of game staff or what?
>>
>>37691269
I dunno anon.
Maybe direct their anger against other players as a ploy to get to the top and become a major player in the world. They're poor players who feel like they should get better. Rile up their emotions, and direct the angry mob against other people.
And even if we fail we still get known, probably get a name for us in the lore as well for performing THE UPRISING

“Something like that.” You cut her a sly look. “We'll say I'm a bit overwhelmed and leave it at that.”

“Mm...” She nods. “Fair enough.”

“My apologies on her behalf.” The robed man smiles at you. His avatar is greying, but his posture stout and somewhat commanding; there's a strange sort of reality to him that you didn't get even from Smith. “She makes a habit of putting others on the spot. I think she enjoys it.”

“It's alright.” You respond, this conversation now taking a backseat to the bulletin board adjacent to you. “I really don't mind.”

There's a few groups looking for members that are meeting around the city right now; a few in and around the tavern, while others choosing the city square or player houses as rendezvous points. Some of them are simply looking for additional security while hunting monsters; others are planning on going a little bit lower to the deep caves and ruins below. There's also a number of individual advertisements; a few people looking for skilled Technicians and Artificers, and others looking for additional charter members for their guilds. Maybe you could get in on something new!

> [[ 1/2 ]]
>>
>>37691725

There's also a couple of recruitment messages. A few from smaller guilds looking for members; the advertisements seem awfully cozy. Disposable Heroes is taking members of all levels and classes, and you recall what the guardsman said about guaranteed parties. There's information on the Crimson Guardians, who are recruiting none but the most capable; it looks like you've got to go to their guild hall to apply. The Writ Keepers have their ad really done up, written in calligraphy on paper that looks like it was rubbed in dirt and burned at the edges—it's got the location of their guild hall, and merely says to talk to 'Ayla' or an officer about recruitment.

A glance over your shoulder reveals the Crimson Guardian is gone. Damnit! You wonder if that kid ran him off.

“...Which brings up the prospect of the Nameless.” You drift back into the conversation in time to catch the girl continuing. “Unfortunately, I've neither stumbled upon nor been able to formulate a theory I favor. The popular idea is that they were forsaken by the Celestials, deprived of their ability to be granted boons in the form of Celestial Artifacts, as well as of the ease our Identifiers and enhanced abilities grant us. But, this assumes that we are somehow favored...”

“Maybe they were deemed incapable.” You say.

“Uhm, what?” The girl cocks an eyebrow, and for a second, you'd swear she was about to break character.

“You know, by the, uh, Celestials.” You continue. “Forgive me if I'm presuming too much, but the Nameless I've encountered thus far all seem to have failed at some task.”

“Yes,” The greying man nods. “Error in judgment, or incompetence in battle, with death as the natural consequence. In death, you are denied your Unique Identifier. Of the things that separate us from them, we believe that is the most important.”

“Then, do you think the Celestials want only the most capable to reach the surface?” You ask—it's stupid, but you're kind of getting into this.

“My.” The girl smiles. “Where'd all of this come from?”

“I dunno. I just wanted to ask a question without interrupting.” You grin, and the crowd sighs. “You said there was a Celestial Artifact in Averron, correct? Do you guys know anything about it?”

“I've seen it.” A swordsman in the crowd responds, raising a hand. “Though, not used. It belongs to Liza, the leader of the Crimson Guardians. It's part of her armor, apparently—we don't know the details of how many Gems it cost to make and how many have been put into it altogether, but word is her guild is devoting a lot of resources to upgrading it with artifice, technology, and more Gems.”

“As well as creating more Artifacts, if rumors are to be believed.” The robed man adds.

> [[ 1/2 ]]

>>37692923

“Mm, right.” You say, breaking off from the group. “It's been nice talking to you guys, but I'm gonna get moving,”

The hooded kid from earlier runs into you, red-faced, a frothing mug in one pale-skinned hand.

“Heyo!” He laughs loudly. “What's up, my man?”

“Not much. Made some small talk while researching the goings-on.” You respond. “What about you? Got what you wanted?”

“Oh, hell yeah! Wait, wait, one second...” He awkwardly gropes at his waist before giggling a bit, realizing his Identifier is on the other side—then manages to key something in, eliciting a ping from your own UI.

> [[ Contact Request: Nel ]]

“There we go! I'll hit you up if one of us gets lost! How about it, blazer?” He giggles again, nuzzling against you amorously. “So, wanna lay the smackdown on those ruins? “Yeah, maybe.”

Makes sense. Guess I may have fucked up with that.
Just putting two and two together.
What are the chances of running into the namesless that killed a certain player specifically.

that doesn't answer my question. The Nameless gunner, called A for ease of posting, did not have a UI on her person. This leaves us with two possiblities
>1. A gave the other Nameless her UI
>2. A lost her UI somehow

Now, once we've established this, we can find out who the UI's belong to
>1. They are trophies, taken off killed players
>2. They are the party's UI's, however the number of UI's found disprove this

“Alright, listen up. When I first started the game, I got attacked by three players. All Nameless.” You say. “And I had to kill them.”

“Hot damn, you beat three players at once in your first fight? No foolin'?” His eyes widen. “I've heard most of them were a bunch of player-killing bastards, but I'd never seen it myself. That's awesome, man! What's the deal, then?”

“I wasn't the first player they'd gone after. They'd killed others... and I think your friend Circe is...”

“It'll be alright.” You nod, planting a hand on his shoulder. “Let's find something to do with these Identifiers, okay? Then, you can introduce me to the party. Go ahead and organize a meeting, okay?”

“Yeah, okay. What do you want to do, then?” He asks, beginning to navigate menus on his UI. “Bury them, or something?”

“Thinking.”

It'd be good to find out more information.
But I don't think it'd be worth the time to actively look for her.
We can't contact her.
She may have quit once she became nameless.
So looking for her once we get to other cities is cool. But as of now.. give her a BS funeral for rogue and be done with it for now.

Not making any assumptions but there are a lot of unknowns in this game. There may be a way to repair a UI, though unlikely. If possible it'd definitely be through means of an artifact or a lot of resources like Celestial Gems. It may pay off to hold onto it if she is as strong as rogue guy says, might as well fix his girlfriend if we somehow find a way.
>>
>>37694590
>>37694573
The only way would allow it, is if we got a dagger to be the second weapon, while the scimitar is the main.
That why we cover both slashing and piercing.
>>
>>37694603
Man of African descent, we're in an MMO.
Emphasis on "Massively Multiplayer". It wouldn't matter if she still had her name, but she's Nameless now. Plus she's in a new character.
Gonna make it a little hard.
>>
>>37694590
* Brawler: Brawlers specialize in close combat. They are masters of all melee weapons, as well as unarmed fighting.
It shouldn't be an issue so long as we can actually equip them.
It would be nice since.

Dual-wielding is for rogues, Kirito-expies, and the "fast attacker" types.
One-handed or Two-handed would be more our style.

I would like to mention that RP guilds are usually legit as hell, since they actually take the time to figure out more about the world and what's going on, so they take the game relatively seriously. Plus, most of them aren't bad players, either. Not the best, but they're not bad, and they can be relatively inclusive when given the opportunity. If we're going for one of the big three guilds, I'd vote for the Writ Keepers.

You drag Nel out of the tavern and through the crowds of people maneuvering through the stone streets, until you arrive at the town square.

There's an enormous fountain that seems to radiate a faint light throughout the square; in the center, is a statue that appears to have been carved out of a single massive opal. It depicts a girl, no older than seven or eight, shoulder-length hair perpetually blowing in a nonexistent breeze, head upturned, sightless marble eyes forever affixed on the heavens.

She holds an ornately carved bowl in her hands, arms outstretched, and three ascending stone steps in the fountain water allow individuals to approach—just that closely. The Celestial Materialization Altar.

Nearby, there seems to be a bit of an altercation underway; a proud-looking, rapier-wielding man standing at the fountain's edge and a group of his allies appear to be standing apart from a forming group of people without Identifiers. Nameless. You notice that the swordsman and his friends wear bands on their upper arms, bearing insignias of a gilded sword and shield.

“Disposable Heroes.” Nel says. “That's Andor, their second-in-command.”

“If you're really trying to help, why haven't you done anything about reviving us 'nameless'?” A man from the disgruntled crowd shouts, eliciting cheers from those around him. “Don't tell me there isn't a way! That's bullshit, and you know it!”

“There's a reason we get our reputation for being 'player-killers'.” A man in a leather skullcap wearing a huge onyx gauntlet emerges from the crowd of Nameless. You note his tabard: black, with a crudely-drawn image of a harlequin. Freakshow? He continues. “The Nameless will attack the Identified until you start doing something about it. We outnumber you, we outskill you, and we have less to lose.”

“Was that a confession, you ignorant bastard?” A hooded woman emerges from the crowd of Identified; she draws her broadsword, and flames form in her hand, snaking up the blade. “If you outskill us, you wouldn't be dead! And if you've got nothing to lose, then don't mind if I—”

“Yield!” Andor yells, leaping forward; he draws his rapier and leaves it at the woman's throat, a barrier between the two.

“We're doing our best. As of now, the neutrality policy has ensured fairness for all players.” Andor says. He sheathes his blade, using the fountain edge as a podium. “Both the Nameless and the Identified can go forward in this world, and even work together if they like. But there's so much we haven't explored, both above and below—and so much unexplored potential of the Celestial Gems, as well.”

“No one has said it isn't possible.” One of the Disposable Heroes' officers chimes in. “Which is why we're trying to get to the surface, to go forward and to cover as much ground as possible. We don't hate you. We're trying to find a way.”

What will you do?

“One sec,” You say. “I'm going up there.”

“You're just going to walk right by?” Nel asks.

You push past Andor and make your way up the steps. He seems a bit too busy to care.

As you reach the top step—more like a stone pedestal—you find yourself bathed in a radiant light from above. There's a sense of wanting, a pressing feeling of necessity. The girl stands before you with outstretched arms, and though you don't believe you have what you're meant to, you feel compelled to make an offering.

You interact with the Altar, and a context menu unfolds before you.

Sword and dagger sacrifices a lot of defensive capability in order to allow versatility in weapon range and attack type. Technically, you can still parry, and it would actually be easier to parry rapiers with a dagger, but that assumes you're already really fucking good at this.

You first attempt to offer one of your extra pairs of boots, but it doesn't work. The context option won't allow you to select it, and you can't even pull out the boots and manually swing them up there; it's like a strong magnetic field is acting in the opposite direction. A scimitar won't work, either; it seems like it simply won't accept things like this.

Then, you attempt to offer one of the identifiers. You pick a random one—not Circe's.

“A Unique Identifier?” Someone in the crowd behind you shouts. “There's a goddamn PK on the Altar!”

“You!” Andor swirls around. “Explain yourself!”

“I found these,” You respond, “On the body of a rogue Nameless outside Averron. Four kills. I just started. I don't know about death, or the Nameless and Identified, or how my Identifier even works. I just know I can't carry these around anymore.”

“Well, you should know that a dead player's UI is useless.” He responds, growing a bit solemn. “There are components that look useful, but our Techs haven't been able to break them down with any tools we have available.”

“Then I'm offering them to the Altar.”

“That won't work either.” He says. “The function doesn't seem to take any items. Either it only wants Celestial Artifacts or Gems, or it just doesn't...”

You're bathed in yellow light, as Marcus's UI tumbles into the bowl. A pulse of energy ripples outward from the statue, and the dented Identifier melts into beads of gilded dust that swirl skyward, illuminating all the way to the top of the cave before vanishing.

“...work.” His eyes widen. “What the hell?”

“The UI is gone.” One of the Nameless says. “Do you think that revived its owner?”

You don't think so, but you feel a warmth within. You feel like you're doing the right thing.

The crowd is quiet.

“Marcus was his name.” You speak loudly. “Does anyone recognize it?”

“That was my guild leader.” One of the Nameless speaks up. There's a pause, and he wanders to the front of the group. “We went too deep and got caught off guard by the cave worms. I haven't heard from him since.”

You raise the next. “Ajax.”

There's no answer. You let it tumble into the bowl, and the same thing happens. You watch intently as the rising column of light illuminates stalactites on the cave ceiling. You think you see movement overhead.

You produce a third from your inventory. “Elanna.”

A few of the members of Disposable Heroes glance at Andor, who grits his teeth. “A recruit of mine. A friend.”

You offer it to him, arms outstretched, and he accepts, making his way up to the pedestal beside you.

“Does it work?” He asks, cautiously holding it over the bowl. “Bringing them back, is it this simple?”

“I don't think so.” You shake your head. “I mean, I'm not sure. I don't know. We'll have to wait and find out—and if we don't see them again, we'll know what it means.”

The uncertainty leaves him with a frown, so you continue. “Or, they might have given up—gotten tired of their circumstances. There's no way to know. Just do it. It feels right.”

He does, and it leaves him with a faint smile. He sighs, stepping down to the fountain lip. “Thanks.”

You produce Circe's Identifier, and prepare to dump it—then, a hand on your shoulder.

“Here.” Nel says, looking a bit more confident than before. “I've got it.”

You plant it firmly in his hands, and he grins, lowering it slowly toward the bowl so the gilded ash pours between his fingers before rising skyward. “Maybe we'll get to fight together again soon.”

The crowd seems to have stopped arguing, and it's not quite so cold in the square anymore. It's noticeably quieter. A few people stare at you as you head back toward one side of the street with Nel at your side.

At the very least figure out what Identification entails.

Our starting weapon was Unid'd for crying out loud. It'd be nice to know if it's a magical properties we need to ID to unlock thing, a Nethack-style +/-X, +/-X Damage/Hit bonus thing that always functions but isn't visible until we use it enough, or whatever else.

“Sounds good. I've gotta get these weapons identified, first of all...” You say.

“There's an NPC that'll do it for you for a few creds, but most Artificers have the skill. All this aside, I hope you can appreciate how "just like muh light novels ^_^" is getting on the nerves of people who want to let this quest be its own thing instead of clamoring to cram in as many callbacks as possible.

Picking builds is a thing you do when you have to start specializing to fit your skills. Until then you use whatever stuff you find with solid stats and/or experiment until you find a fitting playstyle.

Let things play out a bit before arguing endlessly about what you want us to be for the rest of forever, jesus christ.

You duck into an alley nearby the market district and open the call.

“Heya. Remember me?” A video feed projects from your Identifier. It's the girl with the goggles, from the tavern; she sounds a little less severe, a lot more laid-back. Out of character, perhaps—wait, she's the leader? “We met a little while ago, when Dorian and I were chatting lore?”

“Yeah, how could I forget? It hasn't been that long.” You nod. “You put me in the hot seat in front of an audience.”

“I was actually calling about that.” She laughs. “Sorry, I wanted to apologize. I like pulling people into my madness, though I understand it's not always proper in a game like this.”

“It's no problem, really.” You nod. “Is that all?”

“Well, that, and I wasn't expecting your retort.” She says. “You really caught me off guard. This game's lore is really out there if you look for it—there's so much going on, and almost no one willing to try and solve the mystery. “Both?” She folds her arms. “What does that mean?”

Ayla shakes her head. “Oh, come now. I'm not even that bad at my worst. So, I was wrong, then? Even you recognize that you've got to frame this game from a story perspective if you want any hope of making sense of the mechanics.”

“It seemed like a welcome change of pace, is all.” You shrug.

“Well, I /was/ going to extend you an invite to join the Writ Keepers.” She sighs.

You grin. "Me? A lowly Brawler? 'New-blood'?"

“Ugh, Dorian's never gonna let me live this one down...” A pause, and she turns away from the camera. "That's fine, then. You've got my contact, and you know I'll be around town if you want to..."

“Hey.” You say. “Did I say I wasn't interested?”

“I—oh.” She's a bit red-faced. “You're really throwing me for a loop. What, then?”

“I'm new, remember?” You suggest. “I'm just weighing my options before I decide to commit to a guild. Hell, I might even start my own. New topic: Why is your name on the Materialization Altar? It says you're the one who 'granted the Manifestation' or something.”

“Yes,” she responds, “With Liza and Andor.” You recall the other names on the Altar alongside hers.

“What's that mean?”

“Greater Altars can create environments, remember? That's called a Celestial Manifestation? This one's manifested Averron City.” She says. “Andor, Liza, and I were leading the party that made the way into this place, and when we arrived, there was an offering ready for us to make. All that was left to do was state our purpose.”

“You guys created this city, then?”

“It wasn't quite what we imagined, but it was close enough.” Ayla responds. “By the time we got there, though, we'd already realized how divergent our playstyles were. Andor was tough, but pretty laid-back overall when it came down to it. Liza was a major hardass, but she had the skills to back it up. And I think you can figure out my story. That's when we got the idea for the alliance. It would be unfair for someone to be able to contest starter territory, so we decided...”

“To start your own guilds.” It makes sense—Ayla leads the Writ Keepers, Liza leads the Crimson Guardians, and Andor is a commanding officer of Disposable Heroes. “I get it.”

“Speaking of Andor—he's been bugging me about something weird happening at the Altar earlier.” She says. “You weren't reading this when that was going on, by chance? I'd like to hear someone else's side of the story...”

You grin.

Thanks for playing. We'll pick up here with a short one tomorrow if I'm feeling up to it. Thread is archived, and since we're way over the bump limit I'll open the floor to any questions; I know I've probably left some unintentional ambiguities.

Otherwise, this has been a crazy couple of threads. Thanks, all.

Player's first character dies:
- Can they continue playing as that character or is it lost forever?
- If the latter, are all of your characters lost upon death?

Cleric, Technoknight, or Shieldknight?

It sounds like DayZ: you respawn elsewhere with none of your original gear and have to start over. The difference is that here, your UI breaks in the process, meaning you have no interface at all and have to do everything manually.

Would the cost always be 1exp?
can we see what we are buying when using 1 exp?
In most games they usually let you see what you are unlocking.
What are your thoughts about the shield idea?
how come you took so long on some points, but were so quick in others?

What are your thought on us making our own guild?
What is this quest based on?

This: >>37697235 effectively. What's known is that the Nameless spawn in random locations with starter equipment, and the game is harder for them due to being arbitrarily "more real". We haven't done a whole lot of research into the how, and there might not be a whole lot of answers available as far as the why.

It's not my place to arbitrate. They're all possible, certainly, though you guys have gotten me attached to the technoknight aesthetic. Whatever you choose, though, there's almost certainly a way to get there.

Yes.

When upgrading specializations, you'll usually be presented with a choice of abilities. As far as abilities themselves, it will usually be evident what the next level of an ability does.

I'm not terribly fond of the shield idea, but it's not my place to decide.

My turnaround time scales down with my preparedness, which diminishes as the session goes on. I also had a full day today, and afterward went right into running this for about eight hours, breaking to eat some food which made me kind of sick. I'm also historically slow at dialogue but I've gotten a bit better and a lot faster since Soul.

Nothing you don't already know; there's benefits, detriments, and responsibilities associated.

No real media in particular. It's nursed from a freeform RP that some friends and I ran way back in the past, and draws inspiration from a lot of things, some of which I've already touched on and others of which should be obvious.

ehh, I gave reasons why double/triple shield could work, but I DO like technoknight better.

Sword and dagger feels too gimmicky in a setting where someone could just pull a gun or magical weapon.
