The car was moving smoothly down the street. She had once rode on a wagon, but this was so much better.

"Ah!" ~she let out a little scream as she accidentally found the switch to lower the window

Fiddling with it, she found how to pull it back up. It IS winter after all, so the breeze was colder than most people would enjoy.

The streets were mostly empty at this hour, with just a few pedestrians here and there, navigating through the snow.

"Cedric, look" ~she points at a lone child walking down the street, playing by leaving hand prints on the little mounds of snow by the road.

Well, he doesn't looks lost (he looks like he's having fun), but why is such a small child outside alone?

The car stops and both Elliezabella and Cedric descend to talk to the kid, who looks at her with some curiosity.

"Hey" ~says Cedric as he crouches in front of the kid, trying to look as non threatening as possible~ "What are you doing all alone, champ?"

"Playin" ~the kid says as he shows his mittens, as if that was self evident.

"Where are your parents?" ~asks Ellie.

The kid just stares at her.

"He doesn't knows what you are saying, remember?" ~says Cedric with a small smirk
"Oh, right!" ~then she tries to english~ "Uuuerrr aarrr uuurrr parrends?"
"Are you a pirate?" ~asks the kid, with a beaming smile

Cedric tries not to laugh

"W-.. no, I'm not a ... I umm not" ~she says, red
"Its alright, Elliezabella, you've only been studying english for a week or so, don't worry" ~then he talks to the kid~ "She's not a pirate, she just uses too many Rs"

Cedric gently pats Ellie on the head and then keeps talking to the child.

"Where is your mom?"

The kid looks around, as if he expected his mom to be right there with him, then looks back at Cedric, and shrugs while waving his hands.

"I dunno. Mommy got lost"
"Your mommy got lost, uh? should we look for her before she gets scared?"

Cedric picks up the kid and carries him on his arms while they make their way back around the block.

"Ah, we used to move a lot, so in some places there was snow, and in others no"

As they pass by a gym, she looks a bit confused at the sight.

"Are those people being tortured in there?" ~she asks after a moment of seeing the folk inside working with the machines.

What about "magical sacrificial daggers" from mayan museums and such? do you guys want to have stuff like that pop up from time to time? I think its perfectly in tune with the setting we have. The elves DO have magic after all, and we did say magic flows up and down in the world, so it makes sense "magic items" would start working again.

They don't have to wander far. Soon, a worried mom intercepts them. Of course, she only lost sight of the child for a moment and he just wandered off.

After she thanks them for finding him, they start heading back to the car.

With Cedric's explanation, it seems clear that people is quite often worried about their looks or have odd ideas on physical health.

Looking through the gym window, she wonders if that one guy covered in muscles is really healthy. He looks weird.

"Probably" ~he concedes without a fight~ "Still, it feels nice knowing you are stronger than you were a year ago. We have a discount in one of the gyms, want to check it later?"

The car starts moving again, and they head over to the new residents area.

There's actually quite a few people on the streets now, but they seem to be visiting the empty lot next to the end of the street together with the elders.

Apparently, the sale of "otherworld relics and elven items" on the internet was very profitable, so the elders want to have a greenhouse installed to plant the seeds they brought with them, and these men are an architect, botanist and construction overseer who have come to talk about it.

"I... am not really familiar with the law on that field, but they MAY need to get those plants checked before they can raise them here"
"Why?" ~she asks while enjoying a cup of coffee
"Well, there's some cases where plants have gone rampant and flooded their new homes."
"It's a greenhouse. Doesn't that means that they need a very high temperature at all times?"

Later that evening, Cedric drives Elliezabella to her english classes, and goes to visit the old man in the hospital.

As it turns out, the old man is recovering fine. He had some broken ribs, but no ruptured organs, thanks God.

Since it looks like he'll make a full recovery, Cedric takes the chance to admonish him for sleeping on the street instead of the shelter, specially during winter.

Afterwards he goes to turn in the patrol car for the day, and takes his pickup from the parking lot before going over to pick Elliezabella up.

"How was your class?"
"Fine, thanks" ~she says as she climbs unto the pickup's passenger seat

One thing to remember is some of the lost techniques were because a local raw material often had the chemical mix needed to make the rare alloy.

We take Elliezabella to a coffee shop, and introduce her to her first latte. Many ear wiggling was had for the next 20 minutes or so. Perhaps we should actually keep her away from coffee.

Truly, the people on this wonderful land truly were showcasing just how great these lands are. Not one of them seems in danger of famine. They are all well dressed, and quite healthy and well fed.

In comparison, she seemed skinny. A nomad's lifestyle wasn't one that allowed you to grow lifesaving fat.

The "gym" was a long building with two floors. There was a fighting ring on the first, and Cedric took her to the second, where there were multiple machines.

He greeted the man in charge, and introduced her.

Normal muscle mass, but they should have simple enchants/chants that can enhance strength, that can come easily enough I guess.

Of course you can be thin and small, but still be strong.

If they have denser muscles, they would need to eat a lot more, as they are burning more energy I think.

He helps her into the sliding bench, and again, takes off the holder keeping the weight attached to it so she's just using force against the bench's weight.

Actually, she seems to do quite well, and he adds some weight after a few reps.

Well, being a nomad, her legs were bound to be that much stronger, probably.

"Oh, that was really fun!" ~she says, not nearly as tired this time
"Maybe you want to try with a bit more weight?"

She seems to be fine pushing against twice her own weight. Yes, she has a fair bit of strenght on her legs.

They make their way to a mall, and she has fun showing off on sports wear.

In the end, she gets a pair of sweat clothes, a pair of running shoes, and a headband, because he jokingly made a headband joke about some eighties, and she bought it.

Thus, they began running every day.

She's actually a lot better at it than he is. Well, he's a lot heavier. That may count for something.

They are just keeping in shape, not trying to lose weight, so its probably fine that she has a small cake every day after jogging from the park's snack cabin. Probably?

Her father contacted the agricultural department and spoke with them about the greenhouse.

The government took his seeds, and will grow the plants, then come back to him on the topic of him being allowed to grow them locally or not.

And while this sounds like a tremendously dick move... well, they ARE completely alien plants.

For now, they have apologized and offered to help him collect any earth plant that is:
a) not used for drugs
b) native of the US

The elder is annoyed, but the chance to learn about so many new and exotic plants more than makes up for it, so it looks like things are fine this way.

As the days go by, Cedric and Elliezabella start falling into a comfortable routine.

He shows up every day at 6:30, they go run in the park, come back for a shower and dress up in their uniforms, go to work, and then spend the evenings in town.

After about two weeks, they are finally ready to meet with the director of the university hospital.

Ellie's dad will go with them, and they will spend a few days in town, then fly back on monday.

Going to Chicago, Cedric makes sure to properly spook both Elliezabella and her father about how dangerous it is to get separated.

In case they do get separated, they will agree to meet at certain spot beforehand. The airport entrance, the hotel entrance, under a visible neon sign, and stuff like that.

Thankfully, they have no issues, and the morning after arriving, they make it to the hospital to meet with the director.

The meeting itself goes fairly well, with them walking around the hospital so that Ellie and her dad can show their abilities on volunteer, terminal patients.

The radical, instantaneous and obvious improvements on the patients conditions leave the director stunned for a while.

Finally, she offers them, through Cedric, of course, 11k a month if they let a small research team move into their neighborhood and study their medicine and "magic", or 23k a month if they instead move to Chicago and work for the hospital.

Thus, a small team of researchers will be moving into Newhope as of next week.

This doesn't solve all of the community's money problems, but it certainly helps.

Surprisingly(?), by the time we are back, we find a large group of men in suits (they don't all come from the same organization) wanting to have Ellie, her father, and every man woman and child in the community signed up for a thing or another.

Exhausted after shooing away the vultures, Cedric collapses on Ellie's couch like a sack of potatoes.

"Were they all that bad?" ~asks Elliezabella

She takes off her jacket and hangs it by the door, then goes over and takes off his jacket as well, pulling it off him with both hands.

They stay quiet for a few minutes, then she pulls the milk out of the fire and pours it for the both of them.

"Come on, sit up straight"
"Alright, hold on" ~he unglues himself from the couch, and sits up

She sits next to him, and hands him the warm cup. They smile a little as their hands brush eachother, then quietly enjoy their company.

She blushes brightly, and half closes her eyes, looking at him for a moment while her hands reach forth for his shoulders.

At the same time, his remaining hand reaches up for the side of her pretty face, caressing her cheek gently before his fingers find her ear.

"Ah...!" ~she gasps softly as his fingertips just gently bush her ears.
"I'm sorry..."
"Its alright" ~she says with a smile, and kisses him in turn

Encouraged, he starts gently caressing the upper edge of her ear, his rough, thick fingertips sliding back and forth over the sensitive flesh.

A shiver runs down and up her body, and he can't help but to let go of her chin and lower his hand to her waist.

Kissing still, she lowers her ears down meekly as she closes her eyes, letting him do as he will with his lips and fingers.

She is surprised for a second as he lowers his other hand, and lifts her unto his lap before resuming their kiss.

Encouraged with her compliance, he gently kisses her lips, and without letting go of her waist, moves his lips to the sides of her face, first to her neck, planting butterfly kisses in the nape of her neck before working his way up.

"Eeeh!" ~she cries out weakly when he starts kissing her ears.

She fidgets and whimpers, her hands reaching down for his, their fingers entwining as they continue.
