Hey everyone, welcome to another thread of Merc 2030 quest.

To clarify something that came up in last thread, there is a difference between Auto-crit and Auto-fail. Thankfully we already have two examples from last thread.

First, the 20 for melee kill. Since we were using auto-success, it simply became the perfect kill, quiet, nobody saw and you had plenty of time to use your gun.

A crit would have been along the lines of, “As you slit his throat, his hand tightened on the trigger of his weapon, causing a burst to rip through his friends, dropping two and spreading confusion in the rest.”

Then we have the 1 for looting. With the auto fail, you simply failed to find anything. If it had been a crit fail it would have been something like, “Searching the man, you suddenly hear the spoon of a grenade flying off,” or “Suddenly the man tries to stab you,” then trying not to die.

If there’s any further confusion, please bring it up at the end of the thread. Other than that, let’s have a nice thread.

Your name is William and you are a mercenary, if a fledgling one. Following a successful first mission you are now standing back in the lobby of what you’re pretty sure will be your home for a while.

Of your several new companions, Nem and Morrigan had already disappeared upstairs after unloading their gear on Cath, who seems to have been expecting this. Mary is also still downstairs, having just informed you that you get your own room. Your own room! First they tell you that they’re going to feed you and now you get your own room! Sure you have to buy your own ammo, but it’s not like you’re only going to get what you can scavenge off of dead bodies like before, their seems to be plenty of merchants out in the market with ammo you can buy.

Speaking of buying, you counted your money and you have a whole $50! You aren’t sure how much that is actually worth, seeing as you’ve never had to buy anything before, but you’re pretty sure it’ll more than cover ammo for a bit, especially if you aren’t going out to kill people every day.

As you stand there, Cath makes a gesture with her free hand, the other holding two sets of armor. She’s probably asking you if you’re going to give her your stuff.

>Shake your head no, help Cath take care of the equipment.
>Give your stuff to Cath, ask Mary to show you your room.
>Give your stuff to Cath, go see what Nem and Morrigan are doing.
>Other?

Second that we are Billy. And those who work eat. Those who don't starve.

Work is good!

Helping Cath with the equipment it is.

>>37753588
>>37753445
Morrigan did specify that Billy was your nickname.

How exactly that works you still aren't too sure about, but apparently you can have more than one name. Who knew?
>>
>>37753622
Billy the Kid, I can dig it Guide.

Cath new waifu material. Best girl for sure.
>>
>>37753741
Not sure about that man. Boss seems legit.
>>
>>37753120
Its usually not the crit aspect of the 1 that annoys people, its the auto fail negating a passing roll. Just Saiyan
>>
>>37753741
Agree anon
>>
>>37753799
All girls are best girls.

And also Billy has no idea about monogamous relationships, why would he restrict himself to just one when they are all good?
>>
>>37753817
You get the benefit of autopass 20's.

>>37753799
I'm also a fan of blonds.
>>
>>37753842
He'll need to learn what a relationship is too.
>>
>>37753741
If anything, Billy is the best waifu of the gang. He's great househusband material.
>>
>>37753842
You're absolutely correct.. why didn't I see it before!?
>>
>>37753622
Every time he gets a new nickname, he adds it to the list in his head for his name. It eventually gets to the point where when someone asks his name, he lists off like 2 dozen names he has been called.

But really, I feel Will/William would still be his name he would always give first cause it's his first name (no pun intended)
>>
>>37753842
He has no ideas aout relationships at all anon. Why wouldn't he just get cozy and cuddle with Cath.
>>
>>37753842
Well, he was raised in a camp of literal militant Christians. I'd say there's a decent chance that he has an idea (albeit a warped one) of how relationships work.
>>
>>37753971
He didn't see a girl for the entire time he was there. He has no idea.
>>
>>37753856
But 20s always autopass regardless of the system. 19s almost always autopass as well.
>>
>>37753971
Dude seriously have you seen those camps? More often than not the cult leader has a harem of women and also gets any daughters he has knocked up too. You don't go looking to militant christians for christianity and its values.
>>
>>37754000
"What's with the lumps of fat on your chest and why can't I stop staring at them?"
>>
>>37754044
Even with the autofails the system is lenient as fuck. When I play with my group we all get one roll. Period.

I'd like their to be a decent chance of success and failure. Do you really want the kiddy gloves that badly?

Why don't we wait to see what develops naturally instead of immediately pursuing or going lolpolygamy.
>>
>>37753842
What idiot would vote harem? That shit can't happen. I don't think the QM will put up with that shit.
>>
>>37754127
Anon, the system works well, quests are not TT RPGs, if you want to fail all the time go look for another quest, this one is fine as is.
>>
>>37754103
Clearly they must have them to balance out all the gear they carry on their back during missions.

Truly these girls are creatures of efficiency for combat!
>>
>>37754133
Because everyone ends up happy with polygamy. No waifu wars.
>>
>>37754127
p&p rpgs are VERY different to quests anon, using that logic to compare the two in favor or arguing for a system that would be detrimental to the quest is just a logical falacy, and there is a decent chance of success and failure here, clearly you've never used /tg/ D20's before otherwise you wouldn't make a fool of yourself like you just did.
>>
>>37754156
People from guide's Harwm Protag quest, which is fun, but not the route I'd like this to go, personally
>>
>>37754159
I didn't say there was anything wrong with the current system Guide is using. I don't want to "fail all the time." I'm saying we should keep it as he's established it.
>>
>>37754133
But what if it naturally develops into lolpolygamy?
>>
>>37754156
Guide runs "Harem Protag quest." So yeah he'd be fine with it most likely. As >>37754212
said it gets rid of waifu wars as well.
>>
>>37754281
Then I am fine with it.

>>37754212
But if you are just doing polygamy cause you are afraid of waifu wars thats pretty lame.
>>
>>37754247
Well you seemed to be arguing directly against the current system

You shake your head no as Cath holds out her hand. Equipment is something you can help with, something you can be useful with. So far everyone has been really nice to you, which is slightly surprising since you’re pretty sure they’re supposed to want you to do something before that. You want to keep them happy with you though and being useful is the way to do that. So you want to help Cath with the equipment.

She does quirk her head at you slightly, requesting clarification.

“I’ll help,” you say, “I’m good at cleaning and fixing stuff.”

Cath pauses and then nods, slinging Morrigan and Nem’s weapons off of her shoulder and handing them to you. You take them, the extra weight a little heavy but nothing you can’t handle as Cath turns and tilts her head towards the back, where you originally kitted out. You nod, following her quietly.

As you enter the back, you actually take a minute to look around a little more than you did last time. While there are plenty of shelves and racks for holding guns and ammo, most of them are bare. You don’t see more than perhaps one or two guns than what you got to pick from earlier and the only extra set of armor is the one you didn’t take. There is a decent selection of knives, but then again knives are pretty cheap all things considered. There are also about a dozen large lockers, three of which belong to Morrigan, Cath and Nem. You make sure to remember which ones they are so you don’t accidentally get into anything you aren’t supposed to. That lesson also took, your ribs took forever to heal.
>>
>>37754647
Cath moves to the table in the center, which is more than enough big enough to set all the gear on with room for more. She lays out the armor first and then sets her weapon on the table as well. You follow suit, placing the weapons on the table first and then your own. Next comes the bag of ammo, which gets set on the shelf with the rest of the small amount of equipment MMS seems to own. Cath then removes her armor, which you watch carefully so you can follow.

Cath watches you as you follow what she did, then nods as you manage to do it without too much trouble. Hopefully you’ll have that down soon, you don’t want to need to watch every time, they might get mad you can’t do it yourself. As you set your armor on the table, Cath points at the armor and then the weapons. At first you don’t get it, but then when she picks up her gun and sets it next to you, you do. Taking your armor, you move it next to her since you don’t know how to clean it. Cath nods, then moves to the back and pulls out a toolbox, which contains a variety of materials all needed to clean the gear.
>>
>>37754703
You wait for her to pull what she needs from the box first, instead double checking the weapons to make sure they’re on safe and then unloading them and double checking that. Another beating you remember well. Once that’s done you go to the box, checking the position of everything before you pull the tools you need out. That one was only a loud lecture, but you made sure to remember it anyway.

You do a thorough job with cleaning the weapons, starting with Morrigan’s and Cath’s, then Nem’s and finally your own. Cath finishes with the armor before you do, then watches your work with the weapons. As you finish each one, she picks it up and inspects it, nodding in approval with each of them before setting them in the racks next to each locker. When you’re finished with yours, she holds out her hand again. You hand her your rifle and she checks it over like the others, nodding once again. Then she moves to one of the spare lockers, which already has your armor in it. Setting your rifle in the rack, she nods, then turns and points at your bandolier with your extra ammo. You take it off and hand it to her, then she places it in the locker as well. She shuts the locker then, leaving you with only your pistol and knife. She taps the locker once and then points at you. Apparently you get your own locker too. So much stuff you don’t know what to do with.

Cath starts to head out of the back and you follow her. She pauses in the lobby, then tilts her head, this time as if asking you something.

Alright, looks like you're following Cath.

As for all the people talking about relationships and harems and things, please note this.

Will currently has no functional idea of what a relationship even is, much less why he would want them. He spent over four years without so much as seeing a woman that wasn't trying to shoot him and those only rarely.

He currently has only a nascent idea that women are significantly different than men, seeing as how he has spent about a month with the occasional woman around.

However, anything that could be described as "Romantic" or even "Together" is a long way away. He needs to know he's even attracted to them first.

You've got a lot of work to do.

>>37755157

You nod to Cath’s inclined head, wondering what you’re going to go do now.

Cath’s eyes widen slightly when you nod, but then her mouth quirks upward perhaps half a millimeter on one corner and she nods, waving her hand for you to follow her. You fall in step behind her as she walks through the lobby, only giving a slight nod to Mary as you head to a door on the other side, next to the steps.

Cath opens the door and steps inside, holding the door open as you follow her inside. As she shuts the door you look around. There are a variety of metal plates and rods laying around on several benches and a strange set of racks that you aren’t quite sure what they are for. Cath moves over to the bench and peels of her shirt, leaving an undershirt on and setting it off to the side.

You cock your head to the side as she does so, wondering why she’s doing that. Cath see’s you looking, then motions for you to do the same. You nod, removing your shirt and setting it next to hers. Cath nods and then moves to the strange bench, placing herself under the strange apparatus. As she settles in, she looks at you, then points to the space behind her, next to the strange bar. You nod, following her orders.

Once you are in position, she places her hands on it and then pushes, her arms tensing with the weight. You immediately move to help her, but then she shakes her head no when you grab it. You move your hands back, still a little confused, as Cath begins to pump the bar up and down. It takes until the third pump that you get what is happening. Weights, Cath is lifting weights to get stronger. That makes sense, probably one of the reasons she can carry so much. She does a set of ten and then places the bar back on the rack. She waits about a minute, then does it again, with you watching over her. The same happens for a third time.
>>
>>37755649
And Mary would probably be the one who, while taking the lead, gently guides him along each step of the way While holding hands
>>
>>37755943

When she finishes she sits up, now breathing more than before and sweating. She looks at you, then at the bar and then back at you. She’s probably asking if you want to lift as well.

Maybe have a pool or 3 to start with, and only regen one every 2 or 3 threads? You could also regen one from crits or something similar, Sith quest does that and it seems to work.

>>37756507
>he just needs to be taught.

Actually, if they are smart, they will be nice and gentle - and we'd probably do just about anything they ask at that point.

It should become clear to them pretty quickly that we've had little kindness in our life, and will do just about anything to keep the little things that most people might take for granted.
>>
>>37756548
5 all day erry day

seriously though for strength much above 5 isn't necessary

Although I could get off onto a massive tangent about strength training, and that's just not fun for anybody.
>>

There is also the system where you give points when we accomplish a big goal. Aspiring Emperor Quest uses it.
>>
>>37756572
I'm sure she and the girls are good with hands on training.
>>
>>37756579
Currently general fitness lifting, not straight strength. Don't know if there's a difference, been awhile since I lifted.

>>37756627
I'll let you guys discuss it a bit, I'm not set.
>>
>>37756698
>>37756698
Make it a mix of everything, since we started this discussion while rolling a lifting check make it that lifting a certain amount of weight give us a point.
>for example we'd start with a max of 1, then pass a lift check of say...30Kg to earn a second.
Doing good write up/rolling 20s gives a a "fit point" but can never exceed our max limit so if we can only lift 35Kg and the next rank up is at 55 we'd still be at 2/2
>>
>>37756935

No, its a terrible unhealthy and expensive habit.

We should check out our room, see if we need any clothes or other things like a blanket for our bed if we don't have any, then ammo, anything else depends on what they have
>>
>>37757427
Last thread will specifically wanted blankets. Being cold is awful.
>>
>>37757427
I think seeing what they have in general is the best bet.

Wonder if the market will change every so often. With items disappearing or rare items that might only last for that one visit

Blankets, definitely. Or at least a warm poncho or something.

Getting a feel for the prices of ammunition would be good. We might also consider pricing explosives, even if there's already a demo person, since we have some skill with them.

Other than that, anything unusual or interesting that might add to our utility, since we (probably) will end up being the Jack-of-all-Trades for the unit.
>>
>>37757532
I actually thought the same thing. But more of a, Oh.. that bed is probably someone elses..

You remember back to earlier, when Cath hefted three sets of armor, weapons and ammo, when you were feeling the weight of just your own and an additional two weapons. The solution to that seems simple, you should lift weights as well, that’ll make you more useful because you can carry more.

You nod your head, to which Cath’s mouth slightly quirks once more. When she stands up, you lay down on the bench, settling yourself and placing your hands on the bar. But before you can even try and lift it, you feel Cath’s hand on yours. Looking up at her, she shakes her head, moving to the end of the bar. You hear a strange sound when she gets there, causing you to sit up and look at what she’s doing. A screw is on the end of the bar, apparently holding the weights onto it. When the screw comes off, Cath reaches out and begins removing some of the plates from the end of the bar. You stand up and begin to do the same to the other end. You nearly drop your first one, underestimating how much it weighs. You manage the others better, taking off the same amount as Cath does. After you put the screw back on you lay back down, placing your hand on the bar once again. This time Cath stands where you did before, her hands resting underneath the bar as you begin to lift.

You aren’t weak, but the weights aren’t exactly light either. Even as Cath’s hands remain underneath the bar, you lower it, your arms feeling the strain as the bar touches your chest. Cath shakes her head as she leans over you, lifting the bar up about an inch. You nod, then push the bar up all the way. Cath nods at that, so you continue, managing to do ten, though your arms are pretty shaky as you finish. When you reach the top of the tenth push, Cath’s hands move to the bar and pull it back setting it in the rack.
>>
>>37757661
You breath heavily after you let your arms down. Weight lifting is hard. But you only get a minute and then Cath’s hands are patting the bar again. You follow her instructions, managing another set of ten before your arms feel wobbly.

After your arms fall down once again, Cath nods, then prods you to move. You get up quickly, used to responding to commands. After that, you learn much about weight lifting from Cath. It always goes the same, she goes first and you watch, helping out if it seems necessary. After the first set, you make sure to watch how she lifts so you can copy it. A few times she adjusts your grip, but overall you seem to do well enough to please her. Each time she also lessens the weight, most of the time over half. But it seems she’s a good judge of how much you can lift as it’s never too much, just enough to utterly exhaust you by the time you’re done.
>>
>>37757687

When you finally finish lifting completely, you’re sweating heavily, while Cath has simply worked up a good sweat. She tosses you a towel, then gestures for you to follow her. You do, following her up the stairs for the first time. At the top of the steps is a rather large room, with several rough if comfy looking chairs, a table with some cards and other debris on it and assorted other knickknacks. There are two hallways off the room, both with a row of doors. Cath leads you down one and then stops at a door. Opening it reveals a room with a small tub and a drain. Turning a knob reveals a stream of water the wall, though it is rather slight and cold. Cath points at your towel and then you and mimes wiping yourself off. You nod your head and Cath leaves, shutting the door behind her to give you some privacy.

You wash up, wondering how often they do this. Back at the compound you got a bath every week whether you really needed it or not. After you finish wiping yourself off, you open the door, revealing Cath waiting for you. You both nod, then Cath switches places with you, taking a turn with the water. When she finishes, she nods her head at another door, then opens it. Inside is a room, with a bed and a small dresser and not much else. It’s probably her room. Then she points at the door across the hall. Opening it reveals…a room with a bed and a small dresser, though they’re different than the ones in the other room. You stare at it. This can’t be your room, can it?

“Mine?” you verbalize for the first time in over an hour, to which Cath nods.
>>
>>37757709
You’re a little stunned. They gave you a bed? A real bed? You move over and touch it, half convinced that it isn’t real. But it is, it even gives a little when you touch it. There’s even a blanket already! A pillow too! Cath watches you as you explore your new things, a strange expression flashing across her eyes when you look up at her to double check that it’s really yours. She nods, then points at the dresser. Opening it reveals your second set of clothes. She mimes changing and then goes into her room and shuts her door, presumably to do the same.

You obediently change, then wait until Cath comes out with a different but similar set of clothes to what she had on before. She nods to you in the “follow me” motion you’re getting used to and then heads downstairs to the lobby, where Mary is still sitting. You wonder if she ever moves.

“Going out?” Mary asks, looking up from her book.

Cath nods yes.

“Nem and Morrigan went to Doc’s already,” Mary replies, “You’ll probably find them there if you’re looking for them.”

Cath nods again and nods you out the door with her.

Stepping outside, Cath stops, then looks over the market and then at you. You remember that you have fifty dollars on you. You’re not sure what that’ll get you, but you aren’t sure what you’d buy. You already have two sets of clothes, a blanket and a pillow. You aren’t sure what else you’d need. Maybe more blankets?

Cath nods again at the market, then away from it.

I like it so far. The pace is fine at the moment, we get a pretty good chunk of story each time you post. The options have been plenty sufficient, since it's up to us to come up with good alternatives if we want something fancy.

Amusingly enough, I am rather liking our time with Cath. The lack of constant chatter (which we probably will get with Nem) hasn't been a problem, since I'm certain we'll get more than enough background details when we spend time with the others.

That pic might be an interesting background for Cath. She doesn't speak because she's Russian. Maybe part of some covert group sent in sometime after The Happening to ascertain the state of America.

Her group didn't do so well.

>>
>>37758262

You'd be surprised, sometimes it's the quiet ones that are the most expressive, since they find ways to communicate without verbalizing anything. I've met one or two people who talked very little, but were rather good at getting their thoughts across with non-verbal cues.

It's stunning in contrast how some of the biggest chatterboxes I've known are very poor at expressing themselves, and instead fill the silence with nonsense that tells you nothing about them or their thoughts at all.

Ultimately you decide to head to the market. You still aren’t convinced that Cath is right and they gave you a room with a bed, so you might want to go pick up a blanket just to be sure. It might also be useful to see how much ammo and gear is, though you doubt you’ll have a whole lot to buy there.

You nod to the market and Cath nods in acknowledgement, the two of you developing a slight rapport based on mutual quiet and body language. Once you indicate that you want to go to the market, Cath leads the way, apparently having a certain destination in mind. You follow her, not used to the whole “Buying” thing and trusting her to not lead you wrong.

Though you pass several vendors who yell at you and gesture to various wares, Cath ignores all of them, set on her current course of action. After about two minutes, she leads you to what seems to be near the center of the market, where a rather large area is set aside for various groups. Heading to a certain spot, you see a strange person. The girl is very pale, having nearly white hair to go along with her skin. But she perks up as she catches sight of Cath, several other less strange looking but much more armed people perking up as well.

“Cath!” cries the girl happily, waving, “You’ve come back!”

Cath nods as she approaches.

“Did your loudmouth supposed leader not come with you today?” asks the girl, looking around behind Cath.

Cath shakes her head no, then points at you as you stand next to her.

The girls pale blue eyes light upon you, the smile creasing her face remaining as she turns to you. “A new member?” she asks, leaning close to you, “A boy too. What’s his name?” She looks at Cath, then returns to examining you.

You look at Cath and she nods, so you turn to the girl.

“William,” you say quietly.

“William, William, a good name,” nods the girl before standing upright, “I am Koko Hekmatyar, arms dealer and merchant extraordinaire.” She raises her hands up over her head as if this is supposed to impress you. She sighs when you don’t react, then lowers her hands.

“It appears you aren’t quite as expressive as I hoped, but I’ll take what I can get,” she then gestures behind her to the piles of goods and the guards, “Take a look at my wares, we’re a little out of stock at the moment but if you see anything you like you can buy it, all prices final.”

You look at Cath and she nods again.

>Shop: http://pastebin.com/MuPSuyzE

You get fifteen minutes, tops for this. Prices are currently final, but subject to change based upon my working out rewards/loot at a later date.

You look at the many wares presented to you by the girl and her people. Your eyes immediately focus on two things, Ammo and the pile of blankets she has. You’ve never seen quite so much ammo in one place, at least not for a long time and not all of it available for you to possibly buy and use. The blankets though…you don’t remember seeing such a pile. You want them all, but you remember that you probably don’t have enough money for all of them. You also see some clothes, which look a little different than your other ones but still good. You should probably get more than just the two you have.

You point to the things you want and one of Koko’s people bring them all to you, the ammo resting on top of the pile of warm cloth. You hand over the requisite number of green bills, everyone looking happy with the deal.

“Good good,” says Koko, nodding as you take your purchases perhaps a tad eagerly and hold them in your hands, “Come back again when you want, I should have more next time, as long as you have the money of course.”

You nod, still more than pleased with your purchases. Cath tilts her head at you inquiring if you’re done, which you nod to. She inclines her head and then heads back to the MMS building. You follow her, a strange lightness in your step all the way inside, where you put the ammo in your locker, giving you a pretty nice pile and then put the blankets and clothes back in your room.

As you exit your room, you see Cath waiting for you. She inclines her head once more, back outside.

I know we are following Cath around because we like her, but its not helping our social skills. We should have talked a bit more with Koko, at least. I thought what we'd do was, we'd not pretend we were one of those deaf-mutes. That way we could have to have goddamn useless conversations with everybody.

Now we're even more anti-social.

>>
>>37759973
I figure Cath is taking us to the rest of the group. Would you rather we spend some alone time with the blankets?
>>
>>37759973
We probably interacted with more people in the past 5 hours than we ever did in the past few years at the compound. Remember, our social status is a -3.
>>
>>37759982
If we don't talk with the people in town, and we don't talk with the people we work with, who are we going to talk to? The guy we're about to natural 20 stealth kill?

I don't have a problem with what we did or where we're going. Us actively trying to solve Will's social skills by forcing conversation would be out of character for will; as he himself doesn't have any incentive to increase his own social skills. What I'm saying by that logic is that increases in social skills have to come from his environment; people making him talk more or forcing him to have a decent conversation.

For will to change, socially, it has to come from the outside, I believe.
>>
>>37759973
Anon, we'll do that eventually. We just want to spend time with Cath right now. A chance to spend time with the other girls will present itself

>and we don't talk with the people we work with

>>
>>37759973
You aren't more anti-social.

Actually you're slightly more social, especially considering who you were communicating to. Not as much as you probably could've been, but you've made progress on more than you think.

Speaking out loud isn't the only way to be social.
>>
>>37759973
>Now we're even more anti-social.

It's gonna be a lonnnnnng time before we get social. We are NOT going to turn into the party face anytime soon, if ever. We are socially stunted, and Cath is rather comforting to us because she doesn't overwhelm us with conversation.

In short, our social skills should not be increasing anytime soon, and it really should be unlikely for us to deliberately put ourselves into social situations where we're forced to talk a lot. It goes completely against what William is, and will be for a long time.

Your mind flits briefly to the blankets you have. You still aren’t sure about the whole bed thing, but blankets you know are comfy. You disregard the thought though, as you don’t want to disappoint anyone, especially someone like Cath who’s been strangely nice to you without wanting anything. You wonder if you’re going to have to do something for her later.

Instead you nod your head and follow Cath as she moves down the stairs again. As you head out the door you hear Mary call out after you, “Make sure she doesn’t do anything stupid.”

Cath’s hand raises up in response as you leave the building, lowering as you step out into the night air. You follow her as she heads away from the market, more towards the center of town. You look around, wondering where you happen to be going. Eventually your destination reveals itself, another sturdy looking building with the sound of lots of people coming from it.

As you approach, you make out a small sign hanging over the entrance. It simply says “Doc’s Place.” When you reach the entrance, Cath pauses and points at another small sign next to it.

It simply reads, “Don’t draw first.”

Cath points at the sign twice more, until you nod in response. She finally stops and then leads you inside. Inside the lighting is dim, a few lanterns and candles hanging about giving the place a generally gloomy feel. However it’s filled with people, most of them men and all of them armed. Behind the big long counter at the back of the place is a large black man who is wearing sunglasses despite the darkness.

Cath looks about for something; you aren’t sure what until you hear yelling, at the end of the long counter. Morrigan is apparently arguing with another lady at the bar. Cath heads towards them with a firm gait in her step.

As Cath heads toward the bar and Morrigan, you follow her. You look around a little, but since you’re mostly focused on Cath, you don’t see anything particularly interesting aside from several people who examine you as you walk.

As you approach you begin to hear more of the…well you could call it a conversation but it really sounds more like yelling.

“…ucking bitch!”

“You heard me you…”

Approaching the bar reveals that Morrigan is face to face with another woman, this one with reddish colored hair, both of them very angry looking.

Cath immediately steps up to the pair, Nem nowhere to be seen.

The redhead turns to Cath when she moves next to her, the angry face not changing a bit.

“This is between me and your boss you stupid bruiser,” says the red haired lady, “Piss off and let me show her who’s better once and for all.”

“Yeah Cath, back off,” says Morrigan, her eyes not leaving the other ladies face even as her hand hovers in a fist, “Let her start something so I can finally finish it.”

Cath doesn’t move, though her body language tells you that she’s either seen this before or has been expecting something like it for a long time.

“I said piss off!” says the girl, before turning back to Morrigan, “I’m just waiting for this dumb bitch to draw again.”

Morrigan doesn’t say anything, she just lets out a low growl.

Will probably understands very well the concept of staying out of pissing matches between superiors. I think this is a bit more likely for him than "But the sign says no drawing first": that, I think, portrays him as even more socially maladjusted than he is.

Surprising even yourself a little bit, your mouth opens as you remember the sign out front.

“It says don’t draw first,” you say, drawing the attention of both of the angry ladies to you.

“Shut the hell up Billy!” says Morrigan, apparently slightly surprised to see you here, “I don’t need to know what the stupid sign says!”

“Who the hell is that?” asks the woman, looking at you, then back at Morrigan, “Where the fuck did you get him?”

“Shut up bitch!” says Morrigan, “None of your goddamn business!”

The woman gets a smile on her face, it’s a sly smile, one that you can tell is probably not good.

“I get it,” says the woman as she turns back to Morrigan, “You finally admitted to yourself that there’s nobody in this town that would touch your desperate ass with a ten foot pole and went and got yourself one of those messed up fuck boys didn’t you?”

All you hear after that is a growl from Morrigan as she suddenly reaches out and grabs the woman by her collar and starts to swing her fist at her.

Then there’s a loud “Click-Clack”, as the man behind the counter casually racks a round into his shotgun and points it at the two of them.

“Now now ladies,” comes the man’s deep voice, “None of that tonight, you already broke more than your share of tables this week.”

“C’mon Doc!” says Morrigan, her fist inches from the woman’s face, “Just one hit, just one! You heard her!”

“I heard her Morrigan,” he says, “I also heard everything you said to her, so how about you let her go and Cath there can take you back home, you’ve had more than enough tonight.”

Morrigan’s face tenses up, then she lowers her fist pushes the other woman away from her.

“Fine Doc, you win this time,” says Morrigan, turning away from the still unnamed woman.

Cath nods at Doc, falling in behind Morrigan as she starts to step away from the bar.

“Come on Billy,” says Morrigan, her voice still tense, “Let’s get out of here, the air stinks.”

“Don’t be such a bitch,” says the other woman, her voice teasing, “You should let him stay here, I can show him how a real woman treats her man.”

“He can do whatever the hell he wants,” says Morrigan, “I think he can tell who the bitch is here, whore.”

“What do you say pretty thing?” says the woman to you, “Wanna stay here and learn how it is to bed something other than an icicle?”

You just look at the other woman, confused as to what she’s asking you and mostly about what she’s saying in general.

“What’s wrong?” she asks you in that teasing voice, “Don’t you want to sleep with a real woman instead of the icicle like her?”

Finally you just shake your head at her.

“I don’t know what you’re saying,” you reply to her, “But why would you sleep with an icicle? They’re cold.”

The woman’s face freezes in place as she processes what you said, then she breaks out into laughter.

“You’ve got a good one there Morri baby!” she says around guffaws, “One so fucked up he doesn’t even know you’re an ice bitch!”

Morrigan growls again, turning and grabbing your hand and literally dragging you away from the bar.

“Come ON Billy!” she says as she drags you out of the bar, Cath following behind you.

“Ta-ta~” says the redhead woman, over the din, “Come see me when you want a real woman!”

Morrigan doesn’t stop, a low growl coming out of her throat the entire time until you’re out the door and several building away, where she suddenly lets go of your arm and turns to punch a wall.

“Fucking skanky ass whore!” she yells to the night, “Always ruining might buzz.”

Cath stands next to her, still not saying anything but you can see a change in her body language.

“Goddamnit Cath I know,” says Morrigan, pulling a cigarette from her pocket and lighting it, “I know she does it to piss me off but she’s so goddamn good at it.”

Cath shrugs at Morrigan, likely having done this before.

“Fuck it,” says Morrigan, turning towards the MMS building and starting to walk back, “I don’t need to listen to her.”

As you follow after the two, a thought persists in your mind, one you can’t help but re-iterate.

“Why would you sleep with an icicle?” you ask again.

Morrigan nearly chokes on her cigarette, having been inhaling as you asked your question.

“Damnit Billy,” she says, coughing on patting her chest, “Don’t ask stupid questions like that.”

“But…” you say, still confused.

Morrigan looks at you, her eye cocked.

“Fuck,” she says, “You really don’t know what she meant.”

You shake your head no.

“Damnit,” she says, turning back to her path and walking, rubbing the back of her head with her hand. “Don’t worry about what she said Billy,” she says, “She’s a dumb skank.”

“Ok,” you say, “But why…”

“You wouldn’t sleep with an icicle,” she says, sounding slightly exasperated, “You’re right, they’re cold. That goes double for her, she’s got an icicle for a heart and a blizzard for a soul.”

You nod, wondering how a heart can be an icicle but deciding that you’ve bugged Morrigan enough. You look up as Cath places a hand on your shoulder, then nods reassuringly. You nod back, your mind settling as you think of what awaits you back at the building.

The night is quiet as you walk, only the sound of feet on dirt and the occasional loud puff from Morrigan’s cigarette. Entering the building, you find Mary still sitting at her desk, a small lantern illuminating her book. She looks up as the three of you enter.

“No fighting tonight?” she asks.

“Nah,” says Morrigan, tossing her cigarette out the door into the dirt, “Billy here broke the mood before we could get started.”

Mary turns to look at you, then gives you an actual smile.

“Good for him,” she says, “Maybe he’ll be a good influence for you.”

Morrigan snorts, “Yeah right,” she says, heading up the stairs, presumably to bed, “I’m going to bed, don’t wake me up unless we get a job.”

“Right,” says Mary, “Night boss.”

Morrigan just waves her hand at Mary as she disappears upstairs.

“You should go to bed too Will,” says Mary, “You’ve had a big day.”

Cath nods, heading up the stairs as well.

“Ok,” you say, following Cath up the stairs, heading into your room as two other doors shut. Closing your own door, you look at the bed in the dim light. You touch it again, wondering if it’s actually ok to sleep on. In the end you decide you better not, somebody probably made a mistake. Instead you grab both! Of your blankets, setting one down on the ground and pulling the other one over you. You consider grabbing the pillow as well, but the two blankets are more than comfy enough for you.

As you fall asleep, you can’t help but think this is probably the comfiest you’ve been in…quite a while.
