I was about to say the usual "SIERRA NO TOUCH PEOPLE! You try to reply, but you choke on the words. You can’t make sounds work.

You heard them. It was like... it was… it was like they were here. Or you were there. You know. Even if you weren’t. Or aren’t.

You don’t know if how you feel right now is happy. You’re kind of sad, but it’s kind of a good sad. Or maybe a bad sad? You’re not really an expert about this kind of thing. Whatever you’re feeling, you’re weirdly glad you’re feeling it, even if you don’t like it all that much.

Eventually, you regain the power of speech, and address the unseen shadow. You’re not sure what to say, even now you feel ready to talk. You don’t feel like you can just say yeah and be done with it. Hearing Nevada and Dad and Mom is just like… it’s just a lot. You got over the whole thing forever ago, or at least you thought you did. But now it’s like you just remembered that they’re gone, and now you miss them again, even if all your memories of them are hazy at best.

You wipe your face on your shoulder. “Yeah,” you finally reply. “Thank you. Like. A lot.” Lamely, you feel the darkness with your shadow, and with your umbrakinesis, hoping for some reason that maybe you can touch the shade that shared the memory with you. You feel like if you could give it a squeeze or something, maybe you could get your point across.

Nothing feels any different than regular shadows. You open your mouth to say something else, but though the whispering darkness still presses in on all sides, you get the feeling that the shade you hope to talk to is gone.

You’re by yourself again, but maybe a little better than you were a couple minutes ago.

Spending the rest of the night by yourself has lost some of its appeal. You’re still ticked with everybody, but you don’t think avoiding them longer is the right thing to do.

Still, you’re probably not going to do anybody any favors by showing up without at least trying to deal with some of the angry stuff bouncing around inside your skull. You take some time to chill out, mixing and matching Cass’s meditation technique things with Keth’gi. You only go at it for half an hour or so, but getting your body involved in your thought processes kind of helps smooth things out.

For whatever reason, after some deep breathing mixed with yoga mixed with martial arts techniques, you feel not as worse as you did. You’re calmer, less antsy. Still mad though. You stand up, brush yourself off from any moss that may be clinging to you, and leap off the fallen redwood. It takes you only a second to calculate the quickest route from where you are to where you should probably go. It takes a lot longer to go there.

There’s no light from camp. The fire’s gone out, and nobody has any lights on. How long have you been gone? You don’t think it’s been that long, but it wouldn’t be the first time you lost track of time.

You ignore Baron for the time being, even as you think of a bunch of crap you’d say if you weren’t. You walk over by the fire pit, grab your leather bomber from where you left it, and throw it on. Then you toss a few blocks of wood into the fire pit, atop the embers. Rethinking the placement of the wood, you crouch down and move stuff around with your hands until it’s in a neat kind of log-cabin kind of setup, with the coals on bottom.

With a peculiar satisfaction, you let some of your fire out into the pit. Your hands alight with flame and torch the new wood, the sheer heat of the blast lighting up the night. (PP: 28/33) You shut your eyes against the sudden flare of color and warmth, allowing a moment to adjust back to your regular light-sensitive sight.

With the fire successfully restarted, you guide yourself back into an empty camp chair and stare into the wavering tongues of flame. Though you like darkness and shadows and stuff, fire’s pretty awesome too, in a different, burning kind of way. (-2 Stress: 23/100)

You whistle, and Reeber appears out of the night to join you, still in German Shepherd form. He runs about the fire a few times before settling to the side on his haunches. You reach out and give him a good-natured pat on the shoulder before returning to your seat.

You glance back over your shoulder at Baron, and catch him looking at you from his stump. He quickly shifts his gaze to the fire instead and tries to feign not being stressed.

You look back at the flames you created. “Hey,” you say, just loud enough so he’ll hear you. Otherwise, you continue as normal, or at least try to. It’s kind of hard to focus with him at your back. Still, you’re content to let him take the lead. Because, you know, if he wants to talk, he can talk for himself.

The fire grows in size, eventually consuming the fresh wood and burning brighter and warmer. Another person would probably be uncomfortable with the direct heat, but you’d be okay with curling up around the fire itself if it didn’t mean burning your clothes.
