With that, the connection severs and you're left to your own thoughts. If Fulvia really can hear everything communicated via the brooches, you're forced to hope she isn't a gossip. You can't help but feel you lost that little verbal exchange.

You soak in the cold bath for a while longer, until your muscles are good and relaxed and you can no longer feel your toes. It's at that point you climb out of the bath and make your way from the frigidarium to the tepidarium, which lies behind a thick door at one end of the room. The tepidarium, though called a warm bath, is actually rather hot. The walls and floors themselves radiate constant heat thanks to a series of pipes beneath their surfaces.

You find a collection of scented oils gathered at one end and take a moment to anoint yourself before taking a seat on a bench and leaning your back against one of the heated walls. You use a hooked blade to scrape the oil, and with it the dirt and sweat which has accumulated since you last bathed, off your skin. Once you've scraped the whole of your body clean, you move on to the caldarium which lies behind yet another thick door.

Though the tepidarium is hot, the caldarium is practically boiling. Steam hangs heavy in the air, scented with burning incense, and in the center of the room sits a small recessed pit of hot water. Much like the tepidarium the walls themselves exude heat. You slide into the bath carefully, the heat searing you at first. Gradually you adjust and make yourself comfortable.

You soak for what feels like ages, your thoughts drifting aimlessly. Eventually you feel it's time to climb out, so you take a moment to rinse your hair in the hot water and then return to the tepidarium. The last thing you do before leaving the baths is once more anoint yourself with scented oils and scrape them off with a curved blade.

You emerge from the baths smelling vaguely of rose water and olive oil. After you've dressed yourself you set off up the stairs to the balcony above and nearly bump into Darzi, her hair matted and her silken underrobes soaked through with sweat. You wonder why she submits herself to such a laborious exercise routine every night, she hardly needs to be in any better shape than she already is.

“Well it seems I've just missed you, here I was hoping for someone to ogle while I enjoyed my bath.” She teases you. “Guess I'll have to do my best to enjoy myself alone.”

You emerge onto the second story balcony and take a moment to consider how you wish to spend the rest of the evening. Most of your companions will be asleep by now, it's probably midnight or well past it. You could meditate, or perhaps read a book. You could always explore the city as well, though it's doubtful you'll find anything save trouble at this hour. Of course, you could always rest. You have a big day coming up tomorrow.

You return to your room, making your way over to your cloak where it sits on your dresser. You extract two scrolls from within your cloak and sit down on your bed, making yourself comfortable and unrolling the first scroll. You start with the simpler of the two metamagic effects you intend on studying tonight: Area of Effect.

Area of Effect is a fairly basic metamagic many people learn during their apprentice ship. It's incredibly useful in conjunction with spells like paralysis, poison, or leech. The only issue is that it's indiscriminate. There are innumerable examples of great Vatis accidentally paralyzing themselves and finding themselves struck down by the enemy for their foolishness.

Area of Effect essentially requires a Vatis to disrupt the flow of vys as they cast a spell. Instead of a single, controlled bolt of vys they should instead seek to hurl a roiling, unstable ball of magic at whatever their target is. The more vys pumped into the spell, the larger the area affected will be.

The author describes it as similar in some ways to the Burst metamagic effect. The trick to casting a Area of Effect spell is not so much how you manipulate the vys once you cast the spell, but rather how you channel the vys as you're casting it. In order to meditate on the effect, the author suggest the caster tightly constrict the flow of vys as they channel energy into the spell, thus forcing it to come out in sporadic, uncontrollable burst.

You move on to the more complicated metamagic you picked out, Selective. Unrolling the scroll you're met with an endlessly complex formula. You're not even really sure what you're looking at. You think it has something to do with fluid dynamics, but physics was never really a focus of your studies as a Vatis. Rather, the willful violation of everything physics stands for was the core of your education.

Magic is the ultimate waifu.

Rolling the scroll past that section you find a lengthy description of the mechanics of the selective metamagic. It apparently hinges upon identifying another person's vys signature and connection the spell not only to your own reserves, but to the reserves of anyone you wish to exclude from its effects. This is simple enough if one knows the leech effect, as the principle is essentially the same. The only difference is that one doesn't leave the tendril of vys hollow when forming the connection.

The trick comes when one attempts to maintain the connection even after the spell takes effect. Normally it's at that point that the connection a vatis shares with their spell is severed, the vys being expended to fuel the effects of the spell. It requires constant vigilance, one must manipulate the vys even as it's burned away until nothing remains, not only for themselves but often for three or four other people as well.

The author takes a moment to mention that spells become more difficult to cast with each additional possible target excluded from a spell. Eventually even simple spells like paralysis become impossible if one attempts to exclude too many people.

In order to meditate on the effect, the author suggest carving a collection of runes onto a surface and channeling vys into them. Once a sufficient amount of vys has been stored, the caster ought to let a pulse of vys wash over the runes, but attempt to prevent the vys from actually coming into contact with the runes as it rolls by.

You roll the scroll up gently and set it aside, next to its counterpart. Taking a moment to rub some weariness from your eyes, you consider whether you want to meditate now or try to cram in another effect before meditating. The night is still young, after all.
