September 15, 2053.

You are Nagato, a legendary battleship of the Big Seven and a figure admired by your fellow Kanmusu almost to the degree Yamato and Musashi are. While Mutsu and your other sisters are leaving to fight the Abyssal in the cold waters of the Bering Sea, both American and Japanese alike, you are readying for a different mission. Though it may not be the climactic meeting of fleets you have always yearned for, you cannot ignore its importance.

You fight not for your own pride, but for your sisters. That, you figure, is a far more important cause.

“I've brought two suitable destroyers to accompany your team,” Yamato explains to you as she gestures behind her. There stand two girls: similar to the young American Fletchers you've seen, and wearing the same sorts of uniforms, but a bit taller and a bit larger-chested. One has short and curly blonde hair, and the other wears her black hair in a very businesslike ponytail. Both are armed with a rack of torpedoes slung on their left arm and a pair of twin-barreled turrets on their right shoulder and in their right hand. On their backs are a small stack, a third turret, and a bristling array of smaller guns and what look like cylindrical grenades in racks mounted to their frames.

“I'm Laffey,” the first tells you, offering a salute with her free hand. “I look forward to working with you all.”

The second bows curtly. “Heng Yang. Just Yang, if you like.”

“They're Sumner class,” Yamato tells you. “The only two revived, so they have no other sisters to explain their mission to.”

“And everyone else thinks they're here to cover for us?” Sara asks.

Yamato nods in affirmation. “Correct.”

"Yang?" you ask, a bit confused. "That does not sound very American."

"A lot of us were sold off to the Republic of China after the war," Yang explains with a sigh. "Heng Yang was my new name. Used to be Samuel N. Moore."

"And you didn't want to have a guy's name?" Kongou grins.

Yang shrugs. "That, and it's bad luck to rename a ship. Though I suppose I turned out to be the lucky one after all: the others were all scrapped, sunk, or broken down for spare parts... which later went into me, of course."

That's... actually kind of horrifying. You're really not used to feeling that way about anything, but being repaired with pieces from your cannibalized sisters kind of warrants it.

"And you, Laffey?" Sara presses. "You're the one they said 'would not die', right?"

Laffey smiles. "Yeah! It's the reason I got to be a museum ship after the war, even though... well, all I ever really did was blast shore batteries."

"Those still shoot back at least," you point out. "And you are both okay with taking on this mission, instead of fighting the main battle?"

Yang nods with a sudden enthusiasm. "I've got my own body for once, not one cobbled together from the scraps of my sisters. We've all got a chance at a new life, and I'm not gonna let that chance slip away."

"Good," you tell them. "I look forward to seeing your performance." They exchange nervous smiles with each other before nodding back at you.

When you look up, you notice that your team have left your side: Sara is speaking with Lexington before the latter leaves. Kongou is leading her sisters in a rowdy cheer of some sort... looks energetic, if undignified. Even Prinzessin has found her "sisters", and is talking with them in German.

Mutsu stands by the waterfront, looking back at you. Though she's smiling, you can tell it's a sad smile.

You're not about to let your younger sister leave that easily. She seems relieved as you approach her at a pace that could only be described as "driven".

"Hey, sis..." she begins, only to have her words cut short as her eyes go wide.

You embrace her.

Not normally one for open shows of emotion, you allow yourself this moment of affection towards your dear sister. She seems stunned by it, before eventually returning the embrace just as warmly. The two of you share a tender moment together, not caring about any of the onlookers or what they might think: because for possibly the first time, you just don't give a damn.

"Jeez, sis. You're embarrassing me," she mutters as you hold her, though you can tell she's just saying that.

When you finally do separate, you do something that stuns her even more...

... you salute her.

It's another gesture you never use with Mutsu, ether in private or in public. It's something for accepting orders, or to be used between fellow officers. A salute is never something you use with your family. But this time, it feels appropriate.

She knows what it means, though her shock is readily apparent: you're treating her as not just family, but as a comrade. You're effectively passing the mantle of representing the Big Seven on to your little sister.

"You are ready," you tell her.

She salutes you back. "I'll see you later, Nagato."

And then she turns to leave. It's a good thing she's not looking back, it wouldn't do to have her see you cry. Yamato, however, spies you... and favors you with a knowing smile.

When you finally return to your destroyer escorts, you hear Yang talking to her sister in a low voice...

In a sudden flash of insight, you know immediately what must be done.

"How much do you know about me?" you ask Yang.

"Ummm..." the girl frowns, caught off guard by your question. "You're one of the Big Seven?"

"Correct," you reply. "And how big?"

"Really big?" Laffey offers.

You nod at her. "Correct. My sister and I are so big and so powerful that just one of our turrets has a similar weight to a fully-loaded destroyer."

"How many turrets do you have?" Yang gulps.

"Four."

Moving quickly you snatch Yang up in your left arm, and lift Laffey with your right. Without your own support equipment your strength is still sufficient to hoist them both as they squeal in a mix of surprise and delight.

"This Nagato's guns will never be aimed at her friends," you reassure them. "Not ever."

"Now, are you my friends?"

Both girls start nodding immediately.

"Good."

Looking out over the departing shipgirls, you notice that Maryland is surrounded by American battleships... you think you see Arizona, Carolina, and California with her.

As you close in, it's not difficult to hear Carolina: the woman known throughout the fleets as the "Showboat" is notoriously outspoken.

“Whaddya mean you're not comin' with us?” Carolina demands in an undeniable southern twang. “What's more impornant than this?”

You see Maryland calmly explain in a few words that you and Yamato have a critical role to play in supporting the main fleet that unfortunately demands that she can't go into battle beside them.

Carolina seems set to shout something else, but Arizona puts a hand in front of her. The usually loud girl falls silent as Arizona says a few carefully-chosen words.

Maryland nods, and gives a short reply of her own that seems to stun Cal and Carolina. Ari simply nods grimly, offering a terse word or maybe two and extending her fist. After a moment's hesitation, Mary nods and pounds her sister's fist with her own before they all go their separate ways.

“She told me to kick ass,” Mary tells you as she looks over the two fully-armed destroyers nestled in your arms with an amused expression. “That your new battle plan, Nagato?”

This is mostly a planning/bookkeeping update. You'll have a series of choices for how to start the operation:

First is insertion strategy, which will in all cases assume a night operation:
>Air drop
>Amphibious strike
>Sneak in overland

Second is how aggressive you want to be:
>Scout first
>Move in quiet
>Move in with force

Third is how to split your teams
>Destroyers may move ahead as scouts
>Whole team moves together
>Split the group into three teams of two

Twenty minutes will be given, and I'll check back to see if something resembling a consensus was reached in that time.

It's the Kure Naval Arsenal: previously a WWII-era dockyard that produced ships like the Nagato. Now a facility there serves as the main research and development site for Kanmusu related technology.

Defenses are unknown, presumed to be effective to powerful. Exact layout is unknown.

It seems like they'd sooner expect attacks from the Abyssals than attacks by land. It also offers more cover.

>Scout first

>Split the group into three teams of two
Sowing confusion and being mobile should benefit us, though I don't like making this decision before we've even scouted the base. I think grouping needs to be decided after we have more clear objectives.

September 19th, 2053. 04:00 hours.

The area around Kure harbor has been largely abandoned since the rise in sea level accompanying the Abyssal attack. The outflow of people was further encouraged once the Arsenal was reactivated, of course. Now, it's a mostly submerged stretch of coast lined with the remains of abandoned buildings: a perfect place for you and your team to hide once the truck that carried you down from Aomori got close enough for you to ditch.

"I plan to split us into three teams," you announce. "Laffey, Yang, and Prinzessin will be one team. Sara and Mary will be the second. I will partner up with Kongou. Prinzessin?"

"Ma'am?" the German replies eagerly.

"You will take your team towards the Arsenal. Observe, but do not risk detection. Note defense distribution, weapons emplacements, and named buildings. Then return to this point, which I will be designating as Rally Point Zulu."

At around 04:30, Prinzessin's team returns.

"Their defenses are... actually pretty poor," she announces. "There's an obvious blind spot on their perimeter to the north side, which is where the research labs are clustered."

"The fences are low, too," Laffey adds excitedly. "I hopped over it like three times."

"Indeed, it was almost impossible to get her to stop," Yang teases as her sister pouts.

Prinzessing coughs once to silence her younger teammates before continuing. "We determined there are three labs, and pinned One as their weapons lab. Two is where our sisters' spare bodies are being kept. Three is..."

She stops, suddenly unsure.

"Yeah, Nagato?" she asks, clearly embarrassed that her aircraft-focused skillset has sidelined her for now.

"I will count on you to come at a moment's notice," you tell her. "When this battle begins in earnest, it will suddenly be an all or nothing affair."

"Count on me," Sara grips the handle of her crossbow tightly.

Your team of kanmusu glide swiftly and silently across the shallow waters in what used to be the small city of Kure. Prinzessin leads you along a safe route, past a museum you hear used to hold a 1:10 scale model of Yamato among other items of interest from your time. You chuckle darkly at the irony: Yamato's now fighting as a pretty young woman, while the model commemorating her death is probably underwater somewhere.

Finally, you reach the section of defenses your scouting team reported. Sure enough, there are two abandoned buildings on a slight rise near the fence line that obscure line of sight, allowing easy access to the base. Your 'skate'-like keeled shoes crunch the ground a little as you move towards the obstacle...

Though you make a louder thump than a destroyer would, it seems that you go unnoticed when you vault over the razorwire-topped fence. On impact you kick up a dust cloud that would definitely give you away if it were during the daylight hours.

Kongou, Prinzessin, and Maryland are right behind you, all landing with varied degrees of finesse. Predictably the cruiser is the best at this, while Kongou... is being true to herself, you figure.

Which is to say she botches the landing and has to bite her tongue to keep from cursing and alerting every guard in the place.

"Move quick," you order. "Keep in radio contact."

You take Kongou towards the mystery Lab, and take a quick look around the building. Two doors, from what you can tell: a side door, and a larger hangar door in the front. That's likely the business end of the building, while the side door is probably a delivery point.

There may also be a rooftop entrance, but that would require some degree of stealth...

You lead Kongou up to the side door, and try the handle.

"Locked," Kongou observes. "That's cute."

Without a word of explanation she fits the muzzle of one of her rifles over the doorknob, which has an electronic key pad, and pushes hard. The whole lock assembly fails, and ends up being pushed straight through the door.

"After you," Kongou offers with a small flourish as you reach an arm through and pull the door open.

Once inside, you make it about ten steps before being greeted by a familiar face...

It's Admiral Clarke's shitter of a son. And Kongou's not happy to see him.

With a snarl she rams a gun barrel into the man's crotch and pushes him into a wall with a thud. The younger Clarke's hands quickly go up in surrender, a look of terror evident in the coward's eyes.

"One word to security and you get to find out what it's like to have a naval rifle in your ass," she grins wickedly.

Clarke gives a nervous laugh. "But it's pointed at my crotch!"

"I know."

The look of dawning realization is priceless.

"Fine," you agree reluctantly. "But piss me off and there will be no body for your father to bury."

Clarke gulps hard, and leads you down a corridor. You can hear the man practically gasping for air the whole way, in a state of near panic at your sudden appearance. At a seemingly nondescript door in a darkened hallway, he swipes his access card and steps in.

It's a tight squeeze, but you fit your guns and armor through the door. Kongou comes after you.

Inside are two racks against a wall, with pale-skinned girls apparently asleep standing up. Over the left shoulder of each is a small-bore gun, and across their back is what looks to be a small multi-shot rocket launcher.

"This is our creation," he tells you. "A cheaper kanmusu based on the Littoral Combat Ship Coronado."

"Bullshit," Kongou spits. "You can't make a kanmusu out of a modern ship you daft Yank bastard. Their souls aren't old enough."

"Ah, yes,' Clarke explains, wringing his hands. "They're not quite as... "moody" as you all are. The navies of the world and the UN think their lack of individuality and repressed emotions will make them more effective weapons, you see. They can't deny an order, or think for themselves, really."

"This is wrong. All of it."

"This is what the militaries of the world demand," he counters.

"And what happens to us once these soulless imitations hit the market, hm?" Kongou presses, causing the Captain to back away.

"Well," he offers, "you do know me and my father, right? I can..."

"Protect us?" you snarl. "Is that what you were going to say? You wish to consign my sisters to death with one hand and have me feeding out of the palm of the other!?"

"I'd rather the Abyssals rip my bloody heart outta my chest and eat it," Kongou spits.

Before Clarke can reply, a klaxon goes off in the room... and your radio contact picks up a massive burst of static across all channels.

"What?" Clarke shouts. "No! I wasn't betraying you yet... we must be under attack!"

"Hold on a tic," Kongou demands, to no avail.

Behind Clarke the "fake" kanmusu stir in their electronic cradles.

"No! They've activated them in here? Oh God n-"

Captain Clarke's final word is lost amidst a deafening explosion as one of the girls behind him opens fire with her cannon. The blast shakes the whole room and sends dust and chunks of ceiling panel cascading like rain down onto you and Kongou.

The flash is tremendous, and when you can see again after a split second Clarke's head is gone. The shot hit Kongou in the forehead, drawing blood and leaving a nasty bruise over her eye before fragmenting and taking out the wall behind her.

"DAFUQ?" she shouts. "I'LL FUCKING CUT THAT BITCH!"

As you open fire on the false kanmusu in front of you, Kongou leaps into action herself.

"BURNING BODY CHECK!" she shouts as she crashes into you, spoiling your aim. Not severely enough that you don't still do any damage: quite the opposite. Your display of firepower fills the room with smoke and fire from the muzzle flash even as it rips the roof off the building and blasts out the side wall. Bits of concrete and rebar ricochet everywhere, raining from the sky like hail in a thunderstorm. It obscures your sight as you're pelted by fragments of building that do little actual damage, and the building's alarms fall silent.

Your radios still seem to be jammed.

When the dust begins to settle, you can see the two kanmusu you targeted are badly injured: one is unconscious on the floor, and the other is bleeding from her side in the corner.

"KONGOU!" you shout, furious at her intervention. "WHAT THE HELL!?"

"Just look at 'em, Nagato!" she shouts back. "Always check your targets!"

You humor her and look downrange... and your eyes widen.

The conscious kanmusu is clutching at her side, her own eyes wide in pain and fear as she tries and fails to push herself deeper into the corner. Further away from you.

She's terrified.

"If they can't feel, how come they looked so scared when they woke up?" Kongou asks, quieter now than before. "How is it this one stopped following her orders? It doesn't fit with what Clarke told us."

That's when you notice something new. On the terrified kanmusu's back is a broken piece of equipment. It looks suspiciously like...

"A radio," you mutter. "Kongou, is your radio jammed as well?"

She nods. "Yeah. Wait you don't think that's how they're controlling them?"

You nod. "It must be. If we hit that..."

"They may not have the will to fight us," Kongou finishes your thought.

"We need to find that transmitter," you tell Kongou. "But first, toss me Clarke's shirt. He no longer needs it."

You move your turrets so they're not pointed at the cornered kanmusu, and carefully approach her. Your hands go up as she starts, realizing that you're coming closer.

"I do not plan to hurt you again," you reassure her in as soft a voice as you can muster. A shirt lands on your shoulder, and you begin to tear it into strips. "Please see to the second one."

The kanmusu eyes you carefully as you kneel near her and reach out. She tries to keep you from moving her wrist, but you eventually pry her hand away from the wound to get a good look at it.

It looks horribly painful, but it will probably heal just fine. You press the makeshift bandage into her side, causing her to wince before you guide her hand back to the strips of cloth.

"We will come back for you," you promise. "I am sorry... you do not need to fear us anymore."

"How is she?" you ask Kongou as she rises from her patient's side.

"Clocked pretty good," she replies. "She'll wake up with a hell of a headache, but she'll be just fine. Yours?"

"She should live," you sigh. "Thank you."

"Don't mention it," Kongou replies.

The Nagamon's spotting ability is unmatched.

When you reach the outside, you're confronted by a vision of Hell.

Normal soldiers don't stand much chance against Abyssal strafing attacks, and the defenders of Kure Arsenal are no different. They've died in droves, and most of their barracks and guard towers are now in flames. Bodies lie everywhere on the ripped-up tarmac as shells burst all around you.

"Glad you could make it!" Mary roars as she slides up next to you. "Before you say it, we've seen what came outta the house of horrors over there. They're engaging the Abyssal fleet out in the harbor."

Overhead aircraft, no doubt Sara's, engage in swirling dogfights with their Abyssal counterparts. Most seem too concerned with that to attack any other targets, though you can see that a massive curtain of anti-air is going up from where Sara, Laffey, and Yang are... WAY too much heat, even from those two's armament.

Prinzessin rolls up to meet you as well. "Our radios are jammed!" she shouts over the din. "Started right as the clones started attacking!"

You take a quick look around, spotting a revolving array on the roof of what looks to be a burning command structure. Fire teams are desperately trying to save the structure...

"That is our target," you announce, pointing right at the radio aerials. "That is how they are controlling their private fleet."

>We attack that now, then take on the Abyssals.
>We need to wait. Without that signal the "clonemusu" will get slaughtered.
>We'll just have to fight through both sides. Try not to kill the clones, if it can be avoided.

It's "jamming" due to simply being a WAY higher output across the same band that Kanmusu equipment is set to use: which is different from most other civilian and military-use frequencies so that nobody overhears you by accident and so any kanmusu in range of a comm burst never has to adjust their radio to hear you.

It's like getting station bleed, basically.

"Wait, why are you not in the lab with our sisters' bodies?" you ask.

Prinz Eugen winces a bit. "Well, let's say we started receiving 'reinforcements' from the combined fleet..."

"Dark," Kongou declares flatly.

Maryland shakes her head. "Ise and Tex are leading the defense of the lab with Naka and Takao. Souryuu and Zuihou led a group of destroyers up to reinforce Sara and the Sumner sisters."

"Very well." You sigh in relief. "We need to leave that device running as long as possible so the new kanmusu may avoid being slaughtered."

"They feel fear and pain, and none of this is their fault," Kongou explains. "I couldn't bring myself to kill them knowing that. It's not fair to them."

"They deserve a chance too," you conclude.

Mary nods. "Yeah. They do... and so do the Abyssal girls they're fighting, I think."

"I want to help them, Nagato. Like you helped me."

>And we will. Let's go out there together.

>And we will. Let's go out there together.

My intent is that the clonemusu will certainly feel better if we're fighting alongside them. It wouldn't surprise me of the admirals tried to have them attack and dispose of us too, in which case our side will be ready and waiting to destroy the radio.

"And we will," you promise her. "Together."

"Ain't that just sweet?" a voice greets you as a pair of kanmusu slide to a stop near you.

"Tenryuu? Tatsuta?" Prinzessin asks incredulously. "Why are you here?"

"We got killed," Tatsuta admits. "It was a particularly large Abyssal that got a fair few of us during a torpedo run."

"But hey, there're more to kill out here now!" Tenryuu crows. "So any of 'em that don't look like girls we can slice, right?"

You nod. "That sounds fair to me."

"Excellent," Tatsuta smiles.

As you advance, you get a good look at the field: about twenty Abyssals of various classes along with three humanoid ones. One is a battleship of some description, darting quickly back and forth between shell fountains as she fires. The second is a light cruiser, small but rather stately-looking. The third is a carrier: confident in her movements as she launches abyssal fighters from a crossbow similar to Sara's.

"Hey, who went and activated horde mode?" Kongou quips nervously.

"Big E?" Mary gasps. "Sandy? Allie too? Shit."

Seems she recognizes all three... as well she should as a former Abyssal herself, you figure.

You open fire with your comrades, scoring a series of direct hits on a massive battleship-type. From the several dozen cloned kanmusu of the Coronado come a stream of rockets launched from those portable launchers they carry. A few even concentrate fire from their undersized guns to bring down an Abyssal cruiser of some kind.

They don't seem to recognize you as allies, however, as several of them pelt you with fire from their cannons. A rocket strike throws Tatsuta onto her ass.

"Kyaaah!" she shouts, rolling to get back onto her feet. She managed to take that shot to a turret, but she lost it from the blast.

Likewise, Kongou just took a rocket strike to the back. There's no serious damage, but too many more of those could be a problem.

You continue pouring fire on the Abyssals, raking the "bridge" of a cruiser and setting it ablaze. Torpedoes streak away from Prinzessin like flashing lances, blasting a pair of destroyer-types right in their grinning maws. Waves of planes, both American and Japanese, rain bombs down onto the seas as Tenryuu and Takata laugh, slicing and shooting wildly through the monsters.

Mary dashes ahead, locking in a close range duel with "Allie", who you figure may be the battlecruiser Alaska. She succeeds in knocking the girl around, though at a certain point they're too close to shoot. Instead they begin trading powerful body blows.

Kongou is shouting the names of moves you've never heard of, all of them beginning in "BURNING!". She's absolutely in her element as rockets and shells and bombs burst all around you.

Then, even more help arrives: torpedo blasts rock several abyssal ships. Looking towards the horizon, where the sun is just beginning to rise, you see the sail of a full-sized submarine. Atop it is a man, square-shouldered and far too lackadaisical in his appearance to be a Captain.

You catch a glimpse of Lionfish poking her head out of the water, looking around at the craziness on the surface, then shaking her head and diving once more.

"Seems that Admiral Clarke was right!" you shout at nobody in particular.

It begins very suddenly with Maryland and Alaska, who fall to the water with screams of pain. San Diego and Enterprise join them shortly afterward as Abyssal aircraft begin to fall from the sky or outright disappear.

The monstrous abyssals, or at least the ones with at least one mouth, roar in agony.

"What's wrong!?" Prinzessin shouts to her, dashing forward unopposed to help however she can.

Without a word you wheel around on the spot, and take careful aim.

"Can you do it?" Kongou asks smugly.

"I am one of the Big Seven," you remind her. "Watch me."

With a resounding blast you fire a single shell from one of your turrets. The blast, the shock ripping through the water, the smell of cordite... you love it almost too much.

You don't have to see the impact to know you succeeded. The surviving cloned kanmusu, who have taken moderate losses in their fight so far, revert to more reasonable human behavior: that being "see monster, shoot monster".

Some of them empty all their remaining micro-missiles into one target at a time, ripping holes in the sides of the thrashing Abyssal flotilla. Turret nodes detach and explode as the hulls warp in twisted spasms.

Death throes, you note.

"Grab them and RUN!" you order. Maryland throws Alaska over her shoulder and falls in next to Tatsuta, who grabs Allie's other arm. A still-thrashing Enterprise is carried off by Kongou and Prinzessin, and you grab hold of San Diego before following your own orders.

"Fall back!" you shout at the confused and frightened kanmusu around you. "Come with me if you want to live!"

"SO CHEESY!" Kongou shouts over her shoulder.

All told, things could have been worse.

Allie, Sandy, and Enterprise seem to go limp after a while, and the monstrous Abyssals all but disappear. There are only fifteen of the cloned kanmusu left alive by the time the last few stragglers return from the harbor. Many of them are injured... and sadly one you do not expect to recover.

"What a mess," Sara mutters as her task force meets with yours by the ruined lab Two.

Ise eyes the devastation herself. "Strange. I never thought I'd say this, but I've come to hate war."

"It's over," Mary insists tiredly from the ground where she's resting. "Mutsu put a shot right in the heart of the Abyssal core. It's done."

When you pass through the gaping hole in the lab's wall the two destroyers drop off of your gun mounts, flanking you as you walk towards where you left the first two clones you fought. But when you arrive there, you find three people.

Admiral Clarke rises to his feet, turning to face you. The kanmusu he was helping seems surprised to see you again, and her now-conscious companion looks at you warily as well.

"Hell of a shot you took," he replies casually. "Nearly pasted me where I stood."

"Had I ordered a full saturation bombardment like I had considered you would not be here," you muse. "Speaking of which, you may or may not feel like answering this, no pressure, but WHY ARE YOU HERE!?"

"I lied," he admits. "I didn't want you to pull your punches just because I was tasked with security around here."

"I see," you reply, smacking him upside the head. "Idiot. As if I of all people would ever pull a punch."

"Suppose I deserve that," Clarke admits. "Shame about the boy."

You glance down at the headless, shirtless body of Admiral Clarke's son and frown. "Why are you so... unconcerned?"

"He wasn't a good man, or a good officer," the Admiral replies."I hardly knew him anymore... I will grieve for who he once was when I have the time. But I feel there's alot for this old man to get done today."

"As for you," he replies. "What now for the illustrious Nagato?"

"We quit, right?" Laffey asks in confusion. "The Abyssal is gone, right?"

The look in Clarke's eyes tells you it's not that simple.

My response here is assuming that the Abyssals are actually dealt with for the most part and that the challenge now is the military leadership we just thumbed our noses at rather severely.

Public support is important here.

As I suggested in a previous thread, Japan in particular is really enamored with Yamato. That could be the stepping stone.

>>38032833
I doubt I'm gonna get something that fits quite as well as this, so I'll go ahead and write up now.

Some, if not most would like to retire from combat, perhaps indulge in their more human parts...

Though I doubt that the worlds governments would be happy with the idea of 'Their Living Weapons' roaming free...

Perhaps after some R&R we could possible work on establishing a kind of Naval Peacekeeping force? the Abyssal fleet wrought havoc on the worlds navies...
>>
>>38032833
"The Abyssals may be gone, but our trials far from over. We took the first step in creating a place for ourselves in this world, but it will not the last."

Laffey falls silent for a moment, finally nodding. "Okay."

"One step at a time, I guess," Yang agrees.

Admiral Clarke offers you a handshake, which you accept. "If you're willing to take an old man's advice, one last time... I have an idea where you can take your next step..."

>Epilogue incoming. No idea how long it'll run.

Take your time writing it out. Be enjoying this thread and quest in general really.

Can you not do this tomorrow if its going to take awhile? That way there is time for both the epilogue and questions.

If not I'm going to bed now. I'm now done to 4-5 hours of sleep available before I have to get up for work.

December 25th, 2054. It's been a little over a year now since the abyssal invasion was finally put to an end.

Admiral Clarke's idea turned out to be a good one: Hawaii has been a very welcoming place for you and your fellow kanmusu. It's a virtual paradise, in fact. Sure your status with the United States has always led to a bit of tension, but they've largely left you alone. They even gave you and your team special dispensation for travel to San Diego so that you could attend Admiral Clarke's funeral in October.

Man basically worked himself to death. No surprise he just took a nap in his office and didn't wake up from it.

Japan's relations with your little enclave are much more cordial, given their civilian population's near-love affair with Yamato. To a lesser degree, all of the IJN's battleships have achieved some manner of pop cult following. The carriers too for that matter.

The Abyssal girls, San Diego, Alaska, and Enterprise, have been faring much better recently. Under Mary's guidance they have struggled to recover the aspects of themselves that they lost... but they may never be as "whole" as Mary is. They seem happy though, and their USN comrades have gradually come to accept them.

They'll be fine.

On the other hand, the clones have proven more problematic. The one you thought would not make it passed on a few weeks after arriving in Honolulu, leaving just sixteen of their original number. A few have learned to speak simple sentences, and others have managed broken English. Out of them all the one whose side you shot open has taken a sort of leadership role. Where the others are still skittish and reserved, preferring each others' company, she has even gone so far as to claim her own name.

Among the veterans of the "Abyssal War" as it's now been called, there's a lot of work on offer. The UN often calls in your fighters to serve as force multipliers in regions hard-hit by the sea level rise and associated political unrest. Missions against terrorist infrastructure and rogue states aren't quite common fare, but escort duty certainly is.

Though some may call your home in Honolulu the heart of a mercenary state, you DO have some among you whose hearts have driven them to pursue other talents. Many great chefs and musicians and writers were hiding among your sisters-in-arms, and Saratoga in particular insisted on classroom instruction in mathematics, history, literature, and the like for anyone who was interested.

For all intents and purposes, many of you now live normal lives.

Prinz Eugen now lives with Bismarck and Tirpitz in the same apartment block as you and Mutsu do. She's been quite happy at the relief from constant work, and now enjoys tinkering with and improving the city's infrastructure as well as helping maintain you and your sisters' equipment. With that business, Bismarck and Tirpitz are pretty much the opposite of helpful: but still, they try. For her, at least.

Mary lives just across the hall, in a large suite with Enterprise, San Diego, and Alaska. She's doing the best she can to help them along, and was instrumental in getting them acquainted with their old friends from the war.

She's yet to do something as crazy as killing herself again, and visits you often.

Kongou, of course, lives with her sisters. Tea time at her place has become an absolute institution, and there's always a place open for you at her table. When she and her sisters go out on a mission, she now leads them into battle with no hesitation and no regret from her past life.

Saratoga has almost retired from combat duty entirely, only going on a few missions with you or one of your other former teammates. Instead "Sister Sara", as people still call her, spends much of her time and energy smoothing relations between the kanmusu and the local residents of the island.

Captain Buchanan is one of the few normal human officers with blanket permission to visit your enclave. His former team of Sealion, Pampanito, Archerfish, and Darter truly were like daughters to him, and they often leave on deployments with him. Now that Admiral Clarke has passed, he's one of your few links to the Navy hierarchies you once served.

Yamato continues to be the de facto leader of the kanmusu. You often advise her on "matters of state", and make sure she doesn't work herself into an early grave. Her sister Musashi stopped wearing chest wraps... though Yamato insisted that she wear *something* to provide some modesty. She now typically wears a bikini, and spends much of her time refining your armaments and testing ammunition loads.

The destroyers Laffey and Yang took the time to visit the scrapyards where so many of their sisters were broken down, but were unable to find any trace of them. Disappointed, they found solace in the fact that they are now able to live normal lives.

Neither has fired a shot in anger since the war ended, and they seem perfectly happy for the fact.

As for the illustrious career of the Japanese battleship Nagato? It still continues. After writing a best-selling book about your experiences, and your musings on the existence of kanmusu, you continue to take on missions with your sister Mutsu, alongside the rest of your dear friends. You push each other to not only survive, but to constantly strive to make the most of your second chance at life.

Your past is finally behind you. You can forget about that blinding light, and the burn of radioactive fire, and the sting of defeat.

This time, you can live with no regrets.

Going to bed now. Will read the rest of the epilogue in the morning. I really enjoyed this quest even though I wasn't around for long. I hope you'll reconsider doing a different Kancolle quest in the future. There just isn't enough of them.

Archives are up, and with that I can put the quest and myself to bed. Hope you all enjoyed the ride as much as I did, and I'll be back at some point with something new.

Thanks Chief. Sorry this quest had to go through such a teething phase. It was superb all-around though.

Looking for any ideas?
>>
>>38033557
Thanks for running, though I know I wouldn't care of this type of ending.

>>38033606
I actually do have an idea or two that I might run: one being an original setting. Not ready to run that just yet.

Ideas are always something I'd entertain though.
>>
>>38033672
Personal bias speaking here, but have you ever thought about running a Command & Conquer (Tiberium Series) Quest? You're honestly among my top picks if someone were to ever run one just based off of how you write and structure quests.
>>
>>38033703
Not too familiar with the Tiberium series, and it's been ages since I played any game in the franchise. Probably not your guy just on those grounds.

What is it about "how I write and structure quests" that you think makes it a good fit, may I ask?
>>
>>38033776
Well, especially in C&C, things are not Black and White. You do (in my opinion at least) a good job of showing multiple points of different sides being 'right.'

Structuring-wise, it's hard to say. I'm not even sure if it's the right word to use, but it feels closest to being right. I guess it partially falls onto how you let us work our way into whatever messes we find ourselves in. This and your Shadows of Zeon quest come to mind. Every choice has some degree of an effect on the surrounding cast AND the viewpoint character. Actually, I really liked how you switched POVs in this quest really well. For something you did to appease unhappy people, you pulled it off quite well.
>>
>>38033846
I will admit to being behind in the Shadows of Zeon quest though.
>>
>>38033846
The hell of it is, anon, I don't think the people I was trying to appease even stuck around. But hey, I feel like it worked in this case. It wouldn't everywhere, but it kinda did this time.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep it in mind going forward.

And now, I really have to get some sleep. If anyone's got any comments or concerns they'd like an answer on from me, twitter's your best bet. If an answer's not necessary I'll read the archives when I'm at work today.
>>
>>38033890
Sleep well Chief. You've earned the rest of the successful (such that it is).
