Sara pulls away from the hug with a giggle, smiling up at you.
"I will miss you, yes? Even if you are crazy."
You frown at her, and she laughs a little harder.

"Why does everyone say that? I am not crazy, yes."
"That sounds like something a crazy person would say."

You muss her hair side to side as she laughs again, leaving her a mop-headed mess as you pick yourself up.
"I have things to do today. Important things-"
"Crazy things."
"Talking to people isn't crazy."
"Are they real people?"

You roll your eyes and walk away.

Elle and Lann are still chatting. Sheszka and Jin should be up soon. Ezzy is giggling around your neck, and whispering 'crazy, crazy' over and over again.
You'll get her for that later.

>You've got stuff to see to in the village. Elle has stuff to see to in the village. Logical progression equals?
>You're heading out of the forest. Soon. A visit to the moths, maybe. For Nin.

Quite the opposite in fact.

Wrangling your friends is a great deal more effort than convincing Elle to accompany you to the village.
Nin follows your half-elven acquaintance down the ladder with ease, and you are left to wrestle with your vaguely conscious friends.

Jin is, at least, as compact-able as always. You're not quite certain how her spine bends like that, but your write it off as monster stuff.
It's not like your own spine is any better in that department.

Sheszka, on the other hand-

Apparently sleep renders the were-wolf's form into some approximation of liquid.
She's practically a puddle.

You end up pausing several times down the tree, juggling monsters into positions where they won't be dropped from stories above ground.
When you reach the bottom, red-faced and lightly irritated, Sheszka yawns, stretches, and smiles up at you.
"Lyra? What's wrong?"

You laugh madly all the way too town.

_________________________________________________________

"I am glad you finally stopped, yes? It was starting to be disturbing."
"Hmph."
"I don't know about that, but none of the animals were bothering us."
"Lann, I am thinking that nothing, animal or monster or human, would bother something laughing like that, yes?"
"I am a person, you know. Someone, not something."

You manage to get them to set aside the argument as you roll through the town gate waving and trading greetings.
You do manage to catch sight of the guards notes as you pass by-
Name, date, reason for visit- "Being giant spiders, I dunno"

It seems guard work is in fact as boring as Lann claims.

To start...
Visiting the trade shop would be best. There's someone with connections to merchants, the guild, the town, and probably more than even that.
Also, Theresa would likely be giddy to find out Elle is planning on moving in and making clothing.

Lann breaks off from you halfway there- She's piled down with a rather impressive bag of clothing, and is planning on getting a nap before she needs to face anything else today.
"-come bother me if you need anyone to speak for you, alright?"

Elle taps her fingers together lightly, a quiet clikcing noise.
"We can speak just fine, yes?"
"Nah, in case they want someone to say 'yes, these spiders will not maul us all in our sleep'."
"Is that a thing arachne do?"
Lann looks to you.

You smile, and tug your sisters hand gently.
"Humans worry about strange things sometimes. Like giant spiders, yes? The shop is this way."
She keeps trying to talk as you half pull her away from the halfbreed.
"-But why wait till they are asleep, yes?"
"That is not the part they are worried about, Elle."

It isn't long before you reach the shop, quiet in the early afternoon with half the town out and about.
You lead your sister inside, pushing the door open, bells ringing as you clatter into the store.
"Good afternoon, welcome to- ah!"
"Miss Theresa."
You incline your head in greeting, smiling all the while.

"We have questions, yes? All sorts of questions."
"And what sort of questions would those be, dear?"

Spider venom is actually a base, with a pH value ranging from 7.0 to 7.5. Baking soda, tooth paste, and soap are also basal, which helps to kill off bacteria.

So, spider venom as a mouth wash might actually work for an Arachne.

We need to find a perfect place to set up elle's house.

It's gotta be a nice clear area, but not SO clear that she can't walk onto other rooves from ours.
>>
>>38176310
It's Elle we're talking about here.
She'd just throw a few strings of slik and have a spiderweb bridge reaching to neighbouring houses.
>>
>>38176351
Very true.
In that case, we need to get started on plan cover-everything-with-webs.
>>
Now that I think about it:
do they even HAVE windows?
We need an open showcase design for our sis!
>>
"Well, to start-"
"Mhm?"
"Elle wants to live in town, yes?"

She looks around you.
"And that would be you then, miss?"
You sister nods.

There's a moment of consideration, swiftly replaced by a dawning understanding.
"And you... are the weaver?"
"All of us are weavers, yes?"
"No, ah-"
"Elle is the one who makes clothes."

She nods.
"So what is it you need help with, then?"
You bring your hand to your face, fidgeting.
"Maybe I should make a list?"
"Go ahead."

"Well, for Elle..."
Theresa can't stop smiling. She looks like a very, very pleased sort of cat. Like one that was just set loose in a birdcage, and the owners are home, and there are feathers stuck in it's teeth. Nothing but pride.
"What she needs to do to live here, yes? Who to talk to, where she can have a house. And help from you. She wants- eventually, anyway- to move to the city. But she doesn't know how to deal with humans, or sell things, or what anything is worth. Or what contracts are. And we'll need a few magic stones for the house as well, but that's kind of separate? And how to secure supplies- a steady stream, of course- for things like dyes and needles and whatever else she would need. And who she can pay to hunt for her if she doesn't feel like it, because arachne eat a lot, yes."

You stop a moment, and catch your breath.

"And for me-"
"Hold up. Stop."
"Yes?"
"There is no way I can remember all that."
"Ah."
"Alright. Let's work this through."
>>
>>38177080

"Living in Oakring is easy- The guild officer might have something to say about it, but realistically, all you need is a harpy to vouch for you. Given your friends, and the fact that one is sleeping on you right now, a non-issue."
"Mhm."
"Housing- It'll take a few days to get enough workers and wood together for-"
"I will make the house, yes? With stone and magic."
"You can do that?"
"Yes."

"Then just see to talking to the officer- He keeps the monsters and adventurers to the outskirts, so they can help in case of trouble. As for pricing and working with people- hmmm. How about-"
She flips open a small ledger on the countertop, skimming through.
"-You come apprentice with me. About a week out of every month, when I'm dealing with caravans rather than townsfolk."
"And that will help me learn to deal with people?"
"You'll learn prices, how to talk to merchants, how contracts work and all that. I'll even pay your for your time."
"Even though you will be teaching me?"

"People who work get paid. In food or coin or whatever. And it'll teach you what wages are like, too."
"Alright."

"Anyway- Supplies will come with the contracts and working. Food... There's the inn. Or you could post work to the guild, or cut a deal with a hunter. It's up to you. And magic stones, I have. Not many, or high quality, but that's the village."
"Water and fire stones, please."
"Common stuff. That I can do. What're you using them for in a house?"

"She is making me a bath, yes."
"Damn. That's something I miss from the city. Warmed buckets and cold rivers aren't the same, at all. Hmmm- Maybe I can con the guild into paying, get a bathhouse in town. Attached to the inn? Or the guild? Merchants would spend way more time, hah-"

"When you are finished plotting, I have more questions, yes?"
"I'm a merchant, Lyra. I can plot and work at the same time."
"Because plotting is half your work?"
"Ask your questions."
>>
>>38177095
"I am planning to leave, yes? I signed with the guild. Just a register. I intended to join a caravan, and head for the elflands."
"Huh. Well, to start- You'd need more than one caravan. Most follow routes, and stick to them. There's some who just kind of go everywhere, but lots of people try to set up deals for constant business."
"One to the trade city, then one to the elflands?"
"That'd probably work. Never any shortage of either."

"Do you have a schedule for them? Or anything like that?"
"About every ten days? Depending on the season, of course. More around festivals and the like."
"And there will be no problem hiring a pile of monsters?"
"The people who have a problem hiring you you wouldn't want to work with."
"Fair."
"Next caravan is probably in a week."

You nod.
Days kind of get away from you, but you'll keep it in mind.
Or chalk it on your butt, or something.

"And here are your stones, Miss Lyra, Miss Elle."
"Thank you, yes."
"I think I've got more to be thankful for. I'm going to roll over to the guild and see about that bath, I think."
"Everyone gets excited about baths."
"You live in a forest. How are you not excited about baths?"
"She made a giant one, with a waterfall and three pools. It is very nice, yes."

The trader stops and stares for a moment.
"Don't you live in a tree?"
"She raised the bath next to it, from stone."
"I'll ask for something more complicated, then."
"I will charge you extra."
"You wouldn't know how, anyway."
"Elle will learn, and then she'll tell me."

The three of you laugh as you step back into the streets, Theresa locking the door behind her and pinning a closed sign to the wood.

Isn't he his family's only caster, which was a pretty big deal because his mother was hoping this would make for a very good match?

Ah, but she needs not worry about her social standing; she is now the grandmother of the future Queen! nin stahp
>>
>>38178672

...crap, we could actually use that.

Goddamnit nin, you and your big mouth gave us assassin problems.
>>
>>38178672
Which wouldn't really do much to change the fact that we are not elves, her son is never going to father elves and we are never going to give birth to elves either.

Sure, being related to a queen is going to be helpful later on if people can be convinced said queen is willing to back you, but she is currently facing a bit of a dynastic succession crisis and the fact that our aunt is just laughing at this whole thing, that our grandfather doesn't mind and that our great-grandfather is fine with it because he thinks the Arachne are still ruling one of the mightiest kingdoms in the world doesn't help.

More immediately relevant is probably the fact that she has a grandaughter capable of murderizing lots and lots of nasty stuff, building really nice buildings really fast and only getting better at magically smithing stuff, who is willing to do quite a bit for family due to her preexisting issues.
And that's before she calls on the help of the rest of the family and her overpowered monster friends.
>>
>>38178795

But how much of a threat would they really be to any of us except possibly Nin and Ezzy?

And if someone does get hurt, we can use it to guilt trip Nin for the eighth of a second before she starts crying and we have to comfort her.

You're right: so are her poofy things! So fluffy...
>>
You trail along behind Theresa as she bustles through town-
Her self appointed mission of acquiring a bath propelling her along.

It's not that it would be in any way difficult to pass her by- certainly not with your stride- It's just that you are fairly certain that this is going to be amusing.
Besides, you thought of more questions.

"Theresa."
"Huh?"
"I thought of more questions, yes?"
"How."

"I thought of things I didn't ask, that I would still like to know."
"Sure. Okay. Go."
"Where do you get glass in town, yes?"
"Eh? Oh. Mikhael makes it, usually. Heavy panes you can't see through, but it lets the light in. And you don't even need curtain for privacy. Unless you're trying to sleep during the day."
"I see."
"And?"

"And what?"
"The other questions?"
"No, that was it."
She shoots you a look before she pushes her way into the guild.

She swings right to the bar, leaning over it to speak.
"Hey, is he in his office?"
The bartender glances from her to you, to Elle and aback again.
"Are you asking, or are they asking?"
"I am, of course."
"No, then."

"What if we are asking?"
"He's in the back, go right ahead kids."
"Hey!"
"Everytime you're back there, we seem to lose money."
"But this time I'm trying to help you make money!"

The bartender still hasn't stopped laughing when you manage to pull Theresa into the hallway behind you.

You remember the door from your time with Lann, politely rapping your knuckles across the wood- very carefully, of course- and waiting for an answer.

"Come in."
The door swings open easily, and you usher the merchant inside.

You can't fit through the door.

I have been called!

In all honesty thought the system was just FATE with an evolution system added in on the side.

The way I handled evolution was generally the first would be the same for all monsters of a kind but with blessing based on what they did/needed, second would specialize into species to fill their role. Third improved the species unless the characters had changed dramatically

For instance Both Gin and Nye became Common carpet Moths after the first evolution, though Gin had a blessing of strength because he insisted on wrestling everything, Nye hadn't really done much yet so he didn't get a blessing.

At Stage two Gin became a Atlas Moth for being stronk while Nye became a black witch because he did magic.

I tried as to have a stock of evolutions ready for my players but said fuck that once they did absolutely nothing like I expected.

Really the systems is pretty halfassed because I had no idea how long we'd stick with this and once they started trying to breed squirrels I didn't think it go much farther.

I really need to expect this shit from them

"Oh, gods no."
"They're just arachne. I thought she joined the guild?"
"That was directed at you."
"All this hostility."
"I saw the contract you penned for the caravans with the silk. You might not be a demon, but you put them to shame."
"You should have hired me first, instead of whoever you had for your contracts, then."
"Not my decision. In any case- Why are you all here?"

"Elle- That is, my sister-"
You gesture next to you. Which is a wall, in his point of view.
"Ah. She is in the hall, yes?"
"Alright."
"She wants to move into town, yes? I thought I would build her home, and Theresa said you were the person to speak to about where to put them?"

"One moment, please."
Drawers open and snap shut as he searches through his things, finally pulling out a wide roll of paper, laying it flat on his desk.
A map of the town.
He pores over the sketched diagram, tapping his finger in spots all over before he spins it to face you.

And then he gets up and brings it over to you.

"There's a few places at the edges that would be good- This part near the river hasn't got as many harpies, or we can fit her near your sleepy friend's cabin. What were you planning to build with?"
"Stone and magic, yes."
"That makes things easier."
"That's what I wanted to speak to you about, as well!"

He turns back to the beaming merchant, sighing.
"Alright, spit it out. I know you won't leave, otherwise."
"A bath!"
"A bath?"
"A bathhouse. Or something similar. She can work stone- with magic, right? So it would be seamless! You could get merchants moving through the guild, probably spending an extra day in town just to relax- There's no way the other hamlets on the way up here have one!"

"That's... all accurate. And surprisingly devoid of contracts. What do you get out of this?"
"I want to have a godsdamn bath."
He laughs.
"We'll see about it, then."

Hey elle, while I'm working on this tub, think up what kinda house you want, kay?

Also this is all a lot faster than I thought it'd be, usually these humans take a few horus of paperwork.

It looks like you want to pound out this contract things as fast as possible!
We'll send Elle to see Lia on her own.

Be sure to get her thinkin' on houses.

Man, today's session went by way too quick.
Gonna be weird having Elle live here.
>>
"We can work on that, yes? I have no idea how these things go. But-"
You turn your head, leaning back out of the doorframe.
"Elle?"
"Yes?"
"You know where Lia lives, yes?"

She nods.
"Head over there, and ask her about living here, yes? She will know what to do."
"Okay."

Your sister reverses, walking backwards out of the hall and into the guild proper.
"And think about what kind of house you want, yes!"

You don't get a response before she vanishes from your sight, skittering towards the door and freedom.
You turn your attention back to the little room.
And the people trapped there by the fact that you are an arachne in a hallway.

"Where we we, yes?"
"Contracts and baths, I think."
"That sounds right?"
"There's a few ways we can do this."
"Which are?"

"For starters, we can just pay you."
"That seems fairly simple, yes."
"Alternatively- We can offer you credit on food, supplies and rooms and so on at other guild locations."
"Oh?"
"We've got a bit of magic for that sort of thing. In the badge."
"Huh."
"And because it's things we have, rather than coin, we can offer you more value for it."
"Okay."

"And finally, we can offer you a share of earnings from the first two years."
"I do not think I would be back in that time, yes."
"We'd send payment to the city then, with instructions to turn it over to you."
"What if someone else claimed it?"
"If there's another red skull covered arachne- or, someone stupid enough to steal from an arachne- Then they probably deserve it. Both the money, and what will happen when you catch up to them."

You laugh.

"A share in the bath seems good, yes. Money waiting in town for whenever I return."
"I had a piece in a contract from the city for a year. Every time I came back, there'd be a chunk of coin waiting- It's nice to know you've got something at home, no matter how bad the last job was."
"Mhm."
"I wouldn't know. I make money like it's my job."
"It is your job."
"I know!"

They don't seem quite so antagonistic as much as teasing.
Huh.

"Do I need to sign off on anything, then?"
"Ah, sure. I'll draw it up."

It takes a little while for this piece to be sorted out.
Some sort of special paper is used, different in, a wax seal.
All very important and impressive.

You take the quill as it's handed to you, poising the point over the page.
"Ah- What language, yes?"
"Huh?"
"What language should I sign in?"
He shrugs.
"Which ever you feel like. Your name is written in the contract anyway."

You put the nib to the paper, the brisk forms of the forest language etching across the page as you sign your name.

"And now, let's see how we're going to do this."
>>
>>38180725
Well of course not. Elle doesn't get a castle she's not Queen.

She can have a tower at most.

You might have answered this before, but I forgot and am thus re-curious. How many sets of teeth do arachne get? Do they regrow if we lose one?

Haha!

>>38180815
>>38180836

Thanks for playing!

Arachne, much like regular spiders, can regenerate missing limbs and fangs.
Damage to their upper body is much slower to heal than damage to the spider bits, and can be permanent, though.
>>
>>38180760
Thanks for running yes.

I'm kind of looking forward to seeing some more of your world.
>>
>>38180970
>can regenerate missing limbs

No shit?

Also, do our spider-hands count as upper body or spider bits?
>>
>>38180982
Thanks for playing!

>>38181039
Upper body. They're chitin, and will regenerate faster than flesh, but nowhere near the speed of your legs.
>>
>>38181165
Good to know.
And now that I know our legs can grow back, I am almost certain one will break off at some point.
>>
>>38181165
Of course, to clarify:
Speed here is relative. Losing a leg would still take the better part of a year.
In arachne, serious damage triggers molting, which will gradually repair damage to chitin.

>>38181192
Honestly, peoples luck with combat rolls has been almost hilarious to date.
I thought you'd acquire a scar at some point in your childhood.
>>
>>38181279
So THAT'S why we've never molted.

Because I was wondering where all our molts are.
>>
I guess we got about a week before we head out. All so sudden. Though probably enough time to give everyone a last visit.
>>
>>38181279
>>38181294

After a particularly nasty battle where we take a beating, Lyra is going to freak out if/when she molts... unless she has seen/been taught about it...
>>
>>38182920
It'll be fiiine.
It's not like we have a team of allies around just waiting for the chance to capitalize on us freaking out with taunts and/or taking advantage of our incapacitated state.
>>
>>38182920
How would the skull molt?
>>
>>38183039
Some kind of fresh and soft skull.
Possibly of a different type?

Either way, it would probably be as difficult as our upper body moulting.
we may or may not go blind
