Chapter X: I am still alive edition.

Last time, on Feral Necromancer Quest: You decided to visit the gnoll tribe and to trade with them. You soon learned they would be moving the tribe as soon as you leave further away from you and to the East, where your old tribe had set up in the plains. You returned to the ruin and practiced alchemy once more, and after some failure, created a fully functional owl, and bound the elven scout's spirit to it. You can set it to scout any time you wish. And that is where Feral Necromancer Quest IX ended.

You are Vlad Tepish.

Your Holdings: A renovated ancient Elven ruin. A well hidden and protected cave, now housing liberated human slaves.

Your minions: 40 normal undead (orcish, elven and human skeletons and zombies, 13 armed with bows, rest with crude melee weapons). Undead orcish shaman. Skeletal elk mount. You control 43/50 minions. Your control is absolute.

Your relationships: Lathrien, your apprentice (agreeable), Ragda and Gerda, liberated old ladies of your tribe (friendly(ish)). Melandie, elven huntress (ally). Bathory, the spirit of your lover housed in her skull (agreeable). Bound spirit of an elven scout (bound to an owl homonculus). Bound spirit of a gnoll pyromancer (bound). Bound spirit of an orc demonologist (Bound). Bound spirit of a black dragon (bound). Elven tribe (open diplomacy), Gnoll tribe (allies/treacherous bastards), Human liberated slaves (likely allies).

Your skills, stats, traits: In the pastebin above, along with your available spells and equipment.

Your goals: Find a body for Bathory, achieve immortality, grow your legacy.

You have ordered your troops to stand in formation, just this once. There is little use for it on the battlefield, when you seldom face any organized force and have no shields, and little worry for injury or casualties. When one falls, more shall take their place.

In a way, it is a strange, accepting and multiracial. Orcs, elves, men and skeletons rotten beyond all recognition stand in front of you. It is impressive, if you do say so yourself. A gathering of this size would be all but impossible with the living. The orc zombie shaman still has even more intelligence than your other minions in him. He can still cast his magics, you tested it and it worked. He will never learn more than that, but you feel rather proud of yourself nonetheless.

The forest around you answers to your call. Grass, fern, moss, weaker flora of all sorts has rotted away and become brown. (cont)

Brambles, thorns and strange sharp grass still manages to grow somehow, although you know it to be dead. The trees, you could not even tell they are dead, if not for the strange, dark energies they are giving off. Any man might fear walking the forest at night, but you are certain that anyone but you walking your forest would be unsettled, no matter how much light they brought with them.

It feels like you have been idle for a long while. Too long. You have the skill and the faculties to create a body for Bathory. You only lack some essential resources. And you have much to bend towards achieving that goal.

>Mountains

You would rather not deal with any dark forces you know. At the least, there is a chance that the mountains would offer you safe, eventless expedition. It could happen. You are bringing your full amount of minions, that's for certain. You shall go yourself, of course. Lathrien has become a valuable part of the group and the elven girl, Melandie, may be willing to come. You may be able to gather more allies, but if there is some group in the mountains, that would make you look even more aggressive than you are already going to appear.

You gather your party, thinking it would be easier to dismiss them if you have issue with them than to call them if you need them and you set out due North. The ride to the mountains is longest you have taken since you were kicked out of your tribe what feels years ago. Sun sets and rises and you keep on going due North. On the eve of the third day you see the mountains in the distance, and by the fifth day you have reached them. They are glorious, but you are not here to sightsee. The mortal part of the group are all tired, yourself included. Your undead are as impassive as ever.

Your companions are weary and you yourself are far from averse to the idea of taking some rest before venturing into the unknown darkness of the mountains. That is not to say you should waste the night entirely on frivolity and rest. You focus your mind and you set your minions to strike at the rock wall nearby, just outside of earshot. You do want to be able to sleep after all.

You call the bound elf's spirit to you.

'Fly. Look for a cave, or a deep canyon, or some opening in the rock wall. If you can, try to find one that goes quite deep.'

'Yes, Vlad Tepish.' He says and flies away.

You might be trying to justify yourself, but you have the notion that with the ability to fly and the relative freedom you allow him, the elf is much happier than it has been in a long time. Good for him.

'We break for camp,' you say.
'Yes! I was absolutely certain you'd tell us to go into the fucking mountain in the middle of the night.' Melandie says.
'The break will be welcome, but I would like to get this over with as fast as I can,' Lathrien says.

You light a campfire, and gather some fir branches and moss to sleep upon. The ground here is rocky and it would be hard sleeping without the preparation.

A watch rotation is a given in an unknown territory, of course. But there is still plenty of daylight and you have grown to enjoy the company of your allies. That can wait until after you've had some food and talk.

'Lathrien, how come you never picked up much magic from your elder? You have the skill for magic.' you say.
'I never cared for it. Illusions are stupid, nothing of substance can be created by them.' Lathrien says.
'It does seem useful to me,' you say.
'In a fight, sure, or a dark cave, but I had not seen a fight until after becoming your apprentice. It cannot create food, or heal the sick. It is useless for a tribe.' Lathrien says.
'You are useless for a tribe,' Melandie says.
'I...' Lathrien says
'Are you blushing?' Melandie says.
'Children, I was hoping for a quiet night,' you say.
'And here Lathrien goes, being all grumpy and stupid,' Melandie says.
'I am not grumpy, just honest,' Lathrien says.
'I am not grumpy, just honest,' Melandie says in a squeaky voice.
'Vlad Tepish, make her stop!' Lathrien says.
'I sincerely doubt I can do that,' you say.

>>
>>38227169
Oh god that would be great I'll back this.
>>
>>38227169
Let me tell you a story children. It is said in the ancient legends, that strong emotions can inflence magic. Hate, envy, joy, and sometimes, sometimes, love. It is said the love can make peculiar things happen, it can rearrange magic it self int peculiar shapes like.. like... WHAT IS THAT!?
>>
>>38227169
that would be entirely inappropriate.
>>
'We had a saying in our tribe, 'The kids who fight, make love when grown up', it doesn't translate well to elven, I know, but...' you say.
'You did NOT just say that, Vlad Tepish!' Lathrien says.
'Oh! So I am so horrible you would get mad at Vlad Tepish at the insinuation that I am attractive?' Melandie says.
'Attractive has nothing to do with it! You're an asshole!' Lathrien says.
'I'm the asshole? I hunt, I gather roots and berries, I keep you fed, and you just sit there and make it drizzle!' Melandie says.
'Seriously, guys, just go behind some ferns and get it over with,' you say.

You get a good minute of awkward silence. It is better than the bickering, as far as you are concerned. The mountain air must be good for you, as you had not felt quite this relaxed since... Well, since Bathory, of course. Your thoughts become steel once more, but you let them relax. Perhaps you can even make your undead perform romantic theater for the two elves. Shame they are busy.

'Lathrien has been quite busy, you know, Melandie. He has really come far in his training,' you say.
'Pah, from our camp I remember him running away into the woods rather than train more days than not.' Melandie says.
'It is true. Vlad Tepish is teaching me good, useful magic. Maybe if you had the talent...' Lathrien says.
'And here we go again. I have plenty of talents, but none of them involve sitting around all day and cutting myself.' Melandie says.
'If you had the patience... No, I apologize. I cannot fight you any longer.' Lathrien says.
'That skill will come in handy later,' you say.
'I give up! I'm going to sleep!' Lathrien says.

You feel a little like keeping the conversation going, but with Lathrien apparently keeping true to his word and going to sleep and both you and Melandie quite tired you bid her to sleep and take the first watch. The sun goes down and you just sit there and wait in silence, alone with your thoughts. It is not a bad life you have made for yourself. You have made mistakes, but you are doing your best to fix them. You have the nagging feeling that something horrible is going to happen, but write it off as garden variety cynicism.

The hours do stretch long, even with the lightness of your heart. There is not much you think about other than restoring your Bathory to life.

DOUBLE CRITFAIL PARTY
Good news: you have gained Awareness 2 (somehow)
Bad news:

The trip was too much for you. The hours pass and long before you are supposed to wake Melandie up you pass out. You sleep without dreaming.

You wake up with the sunrise, to see Lathrien and Melandie already up and chatting.

'So, um, eventful watch?' Melandie says.
'Fuck. We are alive, at least I guess,' you say.
'You could have asked me to take the first watch is all.'

You double check all your belongings and then...

No.

That is not good.

You do not feel the connection to any of your undead except for your elk mount.

You rush to where you left them and see nothing. No one without very advanced necromancer training could have taken them from you. You are unsure that you could have taken them from you.

'But there's no way to do that,' Lathrien says.
'Just because there is no way you could do it doesn't mean no one could,' you say.
'But that would mean they are as good as you,' Lathrien says.
'At the least. We still have a job to do. First thing, we learn what the owl found. Then we hunt all the animals we can find and I raise them as replacement,' you say.
'Just kill them? That's a bit cruel,' Melandie says.
'Yes, well, I am in no mood to get killed by my own minions and I do not see any fresh corpses lying about,' you say.
'Fine. I do not like it, but fine,' Melandie says.

You call the owl.

'What did you see in the night?'
'Found some caves. Some humanoids were skulking about. Then I went for a hunt, as my job was done.'

Maybe he does still resent you. Not that you can blame him. Or maybe there was no malice in his actions.

'Fly! See if you can find my minions or any more of those humanoids. If you can see tracks of either, report that back too.'

Solid passes all around, though nothing special.

It is grisly business, but it must be done. You drive a pack of mountain goats off the cliffs. Melandie finds a pack of wolves and leads them in a vicious trap. Even Lathrien manages to kill an assortment of animals. Recovering even some of your losses takes most of the day, but by late afternoon you have a small black bear, twenty wolves, forty goats and a smattering of smaller creatures under your control.

You control 33/50 max minions. Your control is absolute.

The owl returns.

And here I thought I would never need this picture.

'Let's go.'

You start walking towards the cave. The opening is small, but as you enter and light the fire of your staff you quickly realize that there is a large cavern not far in. Large enough that your light doesn't reach the farthest walls. There does not seem to be any sign of habitation here, so there must be a farther cave system.

You keep walking and indeed find caves that lead in every which direction. Knowing very little of caves you decide to just pick one. You are not so foolish to not keep any note of your passage and conjure small, simple waypoints with your most basic illusions.

Not too much later you hear the clang of metal against stone coming from not much farther in.

Yeap.

'Shh,' you say and kill your lights. You have to see what is going on there, but you cannot risk an open approach.

You move closer to the source of the sound and you do not feel the presence of any undead nearby. That is strange in itself, but perhaps there is more than one tribe here.

You keep quiet. The floors of the cave and the absolute darkness are very different to sneaking about in a forest and you feel that you may be making more noise and with the acoustics of the place it might be carried further on. Nonetheless, the sound of the tools and work drowns out any noise you make easily enough.

When you get close you hear gruff conversation, shouting and direction. You see some of the strangest humanoids. They remind you most of humans, but short and fat, no, stout. Curiously, you see no cloth and little leather, with the majority of their clothing made of iron rings or plate. It is nowhere near as exquisite as the elven armours you have seen in your books, but seems just as practical. They also have an absurd amount of body and facial hair, used as padding under the armour.

They are digging with fairly basic, but functional tools. As you suspected, none of your minions are here, nor do you see signs of anyone else using magic.

The language, you are unsure. You have studied many of the old world languages, but placing the sounds to the letters can be difficult.

The speech seems tricky, until you realize it is not a conversation, but instead a recital or even a song. The language is dwarven, though you found nothing of their people in the books you did learn some of the basics of the language. The song seems to be a simple work song, intended to keep rhythm and to keep your mind off weariness.

Working on the rock-solid logic of these creatures not being elves, you decide to try diplomacy.

You re-light your torch and you approach the dwarves. They are startled, and fall swiftly into battle formation. They are not charging, however.

'I am Vlad Tepish.'
'You speak Dwarrow. Good. You working with the elves?' The question is just about as pointed as his pick.

'Wait. You a surfacer?' the dwarf elder says.

'I have come from the forest,' you say.

'Nowadays we don't much care for anything that ain't iron. We've lost much of the art of working it too. You can look through the dig, if you find what you need you can take it, we won't be using it.'
'That is very generous, the project I am working on is of great importance to me. And what of iron, would you trade any of that?'
'Not cheaply. We need as much as we can get for traps, weapons, armour, tools. But it's possible. What have you got?'
'What do you need?'
'Food from surface is always great. We'll take animal pelts too. Some folks fancy cloth too, and if they want to trade good iron for it it's their business. Any metal we need we find ourselves, though.'
'I have been investigating something concerning dark magic, there should be shrines to evil gods here.'
'Pah,' he spits on the ground, 'there's weird statues around, yes. If you want to know what they mean you'd have to talk to the fucking elves.' he spits again.
'I hope I am not intruding, but what is the extent of this operation?'
'We ain't had operations in generations. We dig until our tools are broken, then we make tools until we can dig. Older folk know a bit of the mines, but no one knows how far they really go.'
'You might want to know that the surface is not too far south and up then.'
'Pah, have to change direction then.'
'You do not want to go to the surface then?'
'We're made to live in the mountain. When we're outside we're short, clumsy, bad at too much daylight and too slow. Here we're just what we need to be to thrive.'

18! I am a strong independent necromancer who don't need no bonuses success!

You keep only illusory lights going as you walk through the caverns as silently as you can. Your allies follow you without saying a word. You can almost feel their fear. You suppose you should be worried too, but truly, you doubt these elves will be any worse than the things you have already encountered.

You would have missed it, were it not for the lingering link between you and your former minions. The drow are not using any light at all, so they are all but imperceptible in the darkness of the caves. They move in absolute silence no mortal could recreate.

What is more, your basic illusion has a hard time penetrating the darkness around the elves. You see shapes, but you do not see faces, or even features.

You do see your former minions. They are standing about, and there are others there too, undead dwarves, around twenty of them. You could not control such a number and you hope the control is divided between at least two necromancers. You doubt you could battle someone that can control some seventy minions.

>Sneak attack. They are not aware of you, and their numbers are few. If you manage to kill even one before they notice you, you would go a long way towards evening the scales.
>Try to wrest control of your undead back to you, up to your maximum control
>Only try to break the control of the drow controlling them, making them berserk
>Have your animals charge in, break control, then try to take control of your minions. A complicated maneuver, but it could be very effective if successful.
>Charge! Take them by surprise and perhaps you can cut a few down before they know what is going on.
>Perform a ritual calling earthquake on their location, bury them all, along with the undead. It would be extremely effective, if successful, but it would take time and cause the entire cave to collapse. You would also never be able to recover your undead.

Too dark for archery, you'd have to light a fire

You have no idea of the capabilities of the drow, other than that they are impressive. You decide you have to take the risk of a more complicated maneuver. You command the animals to rush at the blurred shapes of the drow and as soon as they are among them, you drop your control over the animals. As soon as that is done, you try to control your own minions.

It seems you were right. This is not the single, powerful necromancer you feared. Rather, it seems each one of them knows a little necromancy. With the disarray you caused you take control of your minions, and even manage to grab a few dwarven zombies as a bonus.

The animals tear into the dark elves in a frenzy, and though no elves have fallen yet, the animals keep them more than distracted enough to make your work easier yet.

You know they will try to take control of the animals soon, but they do not have the shaman training you do, and for them they will be much more difficult to control.

You control 50/50 maximum minions. Your control is absolute

There are 10/10 Drow remaining. You think.

>Go for broke. There are more undead you could control. It would stretch your control, but you could probably take ten more, unless you got unlucky.

21! Blackjack!

These drow are clearly predators. They know how to kill. But they have no idea what to do when cornered. And when fire bursts from your staff they panic and make a break for it.

Unlucky for them, they run straight into the wall of bones that are your minions. The effect is actually rather disturbing, as they get killed with hardly any resistance at all.

'So much for the terrifying Drow,' you say.

'Ha! Knew you were all talk,' Melandie says.

He tries much harder. You feel the strings of power work towards the animals, and connect with them. They stop raging and revert to being controlled.

'Vlad Tepish! This is not nearly as bad as with humanoids,' Lathrien says.

He's taken control of just about all of the remaining animals, consisting of some five wolves and five goats.

You bind one of their spirits at random. There is a somewhat familiar feeling to it that you would rather not investigate it. As you think you could trade the head with the dwarves, you bind the spirit to its owner's dagger, a wicked looking thing, but well crafted and not magical as far as you can tell. Not until you're done with it.

You have your undead destroy the undead dwarves to replace them with the remaining drow necromancers.

>NOTE: to raise the remaining 9 with magical capability would take 18/50 available minion slots. Confirm the number you would like to raise, assuming the rest of the heads will be traded to dwarves.
>>
>>38232709
How many dwarves do we got?
>>
>>38232709
5
>>
>>38232709
3
>>
>>38232709
Do we even know what kind of magic these drow can do?

I don't know, they don't seem so impressive.
>>
>>38232805
3 is good
>>
>>38232882

I dunno. a necromaancer controlling necromancers might provide a synergy bonus or something. I vote we raise all the drow.
>>
>>38232882
What did you expect? They're elves.
>>
>>38232934
Alright dude that's really getting old.
>>
>>38232776
I'm rounding it to 10, considering that some of your undead fell in battle. Replacing the dwarves only seems both reasonable and about accurate to the numbers that seem to show up.

You destroy all of the dwarves and replace them with five of the fallen drow necromancers. It is disconcerting how much they look and move just like when they were alive, but they obey you well enough. You take five heads to take to the dwarves.

Having recovered your army you move back towards the entrance, and meet up with the dwarves on your way there.

'What would you give me for these?'
'Ha! Ahahaha! Good lad. For those, take as much iron as you can carry. And consider us friends from now on.'

'I have tomes of much knowledge on subjects which may be useful to you. I will search for these, and bring them back, if you will craft for me as I request.'
>>

interrogation time.
>>
>Converse further with dwarves
did we do the trading? we can't go home without the materials
>Travel, camping fun
>>
>>38232981
Did we have a gawk around for body stuff or is that included in going home?
>>
>>38232981
Can we ask why they are so reduced in population? or is it obviously the elves?
Can we ask if any there are any particularly adventures dwarves willing to come with us, so we can share knowledge about basket weaving?
>>
>>38233031
I think we should keep monopoly on knowledge for now. We just met them their trustworthiness isn't 100% yet. Also If they can't make stuff they need but we can, then we still have basis for trading
>>
>>38232981
>Converse further with dwarves
>>
they told us we can take crap they don't need if we want 'em. let's do so. anything we need for the homunculus?
>>
I think a good working relationships with dwarves would be great if we can trust them with alchemy if they dont already have it.
>>
>>38233045
>>38233040
You got the stuff.

That was a long and eventful trip, but you have returned home with what you were after and more. You have established diplomatic links with the dwarves, and there certainly are options to trade in knowledge and material.

It is time now. You shall give Bathory the body she deserves, the body you promised her. You can hardly wait.

And with that concludes Feral Necromancer Quest X. Hate doing this to you guys, but it is 5AM here and even coffee has its limits. You got shit done and no mistake. You gain 3 exp, and you now have a total of 5 exp. Levelup options are pretty much 'whatever the hell you want'.

Rules for leveling up: http://pastebin.com/vBRyBWfK

I only eat suptg votes: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=feral+necromancer

I am words something, will check thread for widdly scuds and leveling in the morning. I miiiight be able to run a game tomorrow, next Saturday will definitely be one, and I hope I can do something in the week. You might've guessed I've been a bit busy lately, but I should have a bit more time now.

>DON'T FORGET TO VOTE FOR YOUR LEVELUPS

@DeadQM twitter for session times and whatever. I don't post irrelevant shit.
>>
>>38233256
As many levels of Shamanism as we can afford.
>>
>>38233256
Necromancy
I don't want minions stolen again
>>
>>38233256
Level up Alchemy so we can make a great body,
>>
>>38233256
Either even more shaman or more alchemy for giving bathory her body.
>>
>>38233352
Alchemy is at max from whaty ou can get from books. Raising int would help with that.
>>
>>38233386
Then raise int so we can raise alchemy. Bathory takes priority.
>>
>>38233256
Pump that fucking shamanism. This is going to be a easy as putting on a pair of socks.
>>
>>38233405
I back this
We are close. Let's do what we can to do it properly
>>
Necromancy plz
>>
>>38233493
Next tier of both shamanism and int cost 3 points, and either could be combined with next tier of necromancy, which only costs 2 as your primary school.
>>
>>38233545
Wait, I'm like too tired to think. Next tier necro is also 3 points. Illusion would be 2.
>>
>>38233545

Other anon makes a good point. Voting Int and Alchemy.
>>
>>38233627 (you)
Int for Alchemy*
>>
>>38233627
Yeah, I'll back it too Int and Alchemy because alchemy is just so fucking versatile.
>>
>>38233664
Shamanism is pretty damn versatile itself. It also lets us do things with spirits much easier. Say, moving one into another body.
>>
>>38233737
Need to make one first.
>>
>>38233799
Good thing we got all the parts, knowledge and that dragon blood for boosting.

>It is time now. You shall give Bathory the body she deserves, the body you promised her. You can hardly wait.
>>
>>38233799

unless we can possess people. or former people.
>>
>>38233737
We can already move souls, but dat body can always be built better.
>>
>>38233922
And we can already make bodys but we can always make moving souls easier and give ourselves more options.
>>
>>38233868
Why? We can remake Bathory's body and make it into the work of art she deserves. Unaging, untouched by disease, stronger, faster, even more beautiful without the flaws life brings, able to recover from any wound.... I would go on but I think i'm going into creeper mode.
>>
>>38233964
Like what? Move the soul faster? We get more benefits from improving the body.
>>
>>38233992
I don't know. Did you know that going from II to III would let us give bound spirits a full range of senses? Who knows what we get.
>>
>>38233991
Why not put her into stasis in a glass dome?
and curse everyone so they can only see her in their dreams
>>
>>38234038
We want her to live, and her body to be perfect so she can keep on living, forever.
>>
>>38234065
Or we could just build her a new body each time she dies.
>>
>>38234086
That seems awfully wasteful.
>>
>>38234065
Okay I tried to be sarcastic to end this, but we are really slipping into creeper insanity here, let's just stop
>>
>>38234128
Kind of the point, Vlad is just REALLY good at hiding it.
>>
>>38234095
Building a body what? Every 60-70 years isn't that big a deal. Especially since the main materials seem to be rocks.
>>
>>38234151
Still we'd have to re-ensnare her soul every time, and what if she's not close to us when it happens? Plus Who would wish the ravages of age on their loved ones?
>>
>>38234172
Maybe she wants the ravages of time?
>>
>>38234196
Why? Seriously why Old and middle age sucks balls.
>>
>>38234196
I think she isn't the one who's want some ravaging
>>
>>38234217
People might think different when they have the option taken away from them. Besides she didn't seem to mind being dead.
>>
>>38234277
I'm pretty sure that's because she was dead. People find it difficult to express their feelings in a state like that.
>>
>>38234277
Being dead sucks and she was really pissed at us remember?
>>
>>38234337
She told us it was pretty cool and she got to hang out with the dead clan members.
>>38234402
She was really pissed we brought her back.
