INTERLUDE: Genova Canyon, Orre

The flames tear through what was once the hideout of the Snatcher Gang, consuming the complex. Two figures stand outside the flaming wreck, one a giant hulk of a man in burnt and torn clothes, the other a lithe figure in a long blue coat. The first man stumbles and falls to his knees as he flees the fire and the second calmly walks towards him, lifting his metallic goggles off his face to reveal pale gold eyes and a white tattoo etched across his face. He reaches into his coat and draws out a heavy pistol, an incredibly rare revolver, all the while keeping his focus on the fallen man before him.

“...Leo.” The fallen man gasps through his pain. “Why... Why would you do this?”

Leo stops before the burned man and raises his revolver, pressing the opening of the barrel against his head and pulling the hammer back.

“Because, Gonzap.” Leo says in a low voice devoid of emotion. “I grew a conscience.”

The gunshot that follows echoes through the canyon.”

You are Victor Kane, Sentinel Cadet, Savant and Special Forces Team Leader. Yesterday, you accomplished a great many things, but the today, you’re focusing on one of them. As a Team Leader, you need to fill out your team roster yourself, and right now you’re preparing to evaluate your candidates.

Darius Hammerworth, your best friend, finishes pushes the climbing wall of the obstacle course up, a task that would have taken the efforts of an entire team working together. Dusting his hands off, he turns to look at you.

“Well, the course should be enough to test physical fitness, although I don’t think any of them are really slouches in that.” He says in his deep baritone. “What else did you have in mind besides sparring them and Practice Battles?”

You scratch your chin as you lean against one of the posts holding up the net above the low crawl. You’ve been setting this course up since 0700 hours and now it’s 0900. You’ve got three hours to set up any other tests you want.

I can't think of anything better, so I'll go with that too. Perhaps have each participate in a team exercise with the other? Or have them team up with us to achieve a goal?
>>
>>38255688
>>38255769
>>38255782

How should we do that?

It's pretty obvious that Victor and Darius work well together, so we would need to do something where the others have to work together.

Double Battle maybe? Or some kind of team exercise?
>>

>>38255688
This but test not taste.

>>38255831
They pair of against us and our mons obviously. Then team exercises.
>>
>>38255831
Everyone should try to pair with everyone.
Victor should pair with Darius, Katherine, Lyne, the archer which I forgot the name and the other savant chick.
>>
>>38255831
How about some sort of capture the flag? Victor and Darius versus 2 random teams of two.
>>
>>38255921
Or have Victor pair up with Lynne, since we're actively worried about her ability to follow orders.
>>
I suggest we begin with making them do the entire course thrice- one to get acquainted, then two timed runs. then give 'em five minutes of rest.

for teamwork, have them team up with each other. Darius takes the one without a partner. so in teams of two, they fight against you and two of your mons. you can switch the mons you use when they switch teams. this fight shouldn't be too hardcore, since after another 4 minutes of rest, they'll fight again.*

finally, they'll have full-on, balls-out pokemon battles, trainer vs. trainer, against their former partners, barring obvious type advantages. after 5 minutes of rest. they run the obstacle course again, timed, for endurance-testing purposes.

*needs adjustment, because whoever fought last gets more rest before the next fight.
>>
>>38256443

that last rest was supposed to be 3 minutes.

“Well, we need to test their ability to work together.” You say.

Darius nods. “You thinking what I’m thinking?”

You lock eyes with him and you both say at the same time, “Capture the Flag.”

Darius grins. “With Pokemon assistance or without?”

“With.” You say. “We’re going to need to test their Trainer prowess as well.”

“I’ll reserve the Park for the Afternoon.” Darius says while walking over to the rack where his hammer has been placed. “No one is going to be using it since it’s the end of semester, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.”

The Park, as it’s not so affectionately called, is an underground training arena located beneath the Training Fields. It’s used to teach all kinds of warfare, as the entire arena is completely customizable. You’ve seen environments ranging from urban to frozen tundra within the confines of the Park and you’d swear it even changes size. It received its name because the default setting is a nice, ordinary park.

You nod. “I’ll get the equipment and finish setting up the dummies and meet you down there.”

It takes you another hour to set up the target dummies and find and wrestle the melee dummies onto the field. Wiping the sweat off your forehead, you grab your weapons from the rack and belt them on.

>[Cont.]
>>
I think Sleepless died in that fiery inferno. RIP Sleepless.
>>
>>38257171

The entrance to the Park is located in a small shack on the edge of the Training fields. Taking the stairs inside the shack down leads to a metal hallway with a large elevator at the end. Hitting the down button inside the elevator takes you down by quite a fair margin. When the elevator doors open, you see another long metal hallway that leads to a massive vault door. Next to the big door is a much smaller metal door that is partially open and you can see a shadow moving on the inside.

You approach the smaller door and swing it fully open. Inside is what looks like a large control room. Several swivel chairs sit in the room and computer consoles line the walls. Several consoles display the images of an idyllic forest, others display long lines of code, and others are completely blank.

Sitting in one of the chairs and muttering while typing slowly on a console is Darius. The normally very jolly man looks incredibly annoyed.

“Hey.” You say as you enter the room. “What’s going on?”

Darius looks up at you and sighs in what appears to be relief. “Victor! Finally. Maybe you can figure this damn contraption out.” He stands up in disgust and walks away from the monitor.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38257203

You raise your eyebrows and deposit your weapons next to the door, where Darius’s hammer is also laying. “What’s the problem?”

“I can’t operate any of this.” Darius grumbles. “It’s all so damn confusing.”

Sitting down in the chair, you take a look at the screen. it’s all black with green text filling it. You see that Darius has entered a bunch of phrases along of the lines of “Activate Park” and such but the only responses are ERROR messages. Looking around the screen reveals that Darius has been entering all these commands into Command Prompt.

You close the window, which brings you to the desktop. On the desktop are several icons, but the one that catches your attention is the one labeled “Environmental Training Simulator.” CLicking on that brings up a window filled with options. Size of the training area, terrain, environment, weather, etc. It’s pretty impressive.

The current settings are deciduous forest, one square kilometer, and sunny day.

Now, you need to decide what to actually set it to for training…

You set the stage size to five square kilometers and begin setting up a variety of fields. You can’t do tundra or desert without involving the entire simulator so you set it up for a mountainous area along with forests, some grassland and a river leading into part of a lake. The grasslands end up taking up the entire southern portion of the map and there’s only a little mountainous terrain. The simulator is extremely finicky that way. There doesn’t appear to be a way to change the day/night cycle so you leave that as it is.

Satisfied with your changes, you set the simulator to begin rearranging itself. A timer appears on the screen, telling you that it’ll be done configuring in two hours. So definitely in time for you to finish training topside.

You grab your weapons as you head to the door. In the hallway, Darius appears to be staring angrily at the wall opposite to him, apparently trying to burn a hole through it with his mind. He looks up when you approach.

“You figure it out?” He asks.

>[Cont.]

>>38258420

“Yep. Set it for mountains, forests, grassland, and a few aquatic environments.” You reply while walking to the elevator.

“Sounds good. Variety should really test them then.”

You nod as the elevator rises. “They’ll be at a pretty serious disadvantage through the entire exercise.”

“Well, as my father used to say, ‘Adversity weeds out the weak.’” Darius says as the two of you trudge up the stairs. “We’ll definitely be able to see who’s Special Forces material.”

As you emerge into the sun, you take a look around. It looks like some cadets and trainees are out practicing to the tune of the drill instructors.

“Well,” Darius says. “We’ve got time before we start testing. What do you want to do?”

It’s 1030 on Tuesday, May 15th, 2033.

“You wanna help me train Terra for a bit?” You ask Darius.

Darius grins. “That little girly? Of course.”

You walk back over to the section of the field you’ve commandeered and release Terra from her Pokeball. The little Larvitar looks around quickly before zeroing in on you. She immediately picks up on your intentions, and shifts into the approximation of a combat form, arms stretched and legs spread out.

“Hmm.” Darius grunts, while looking at her. “Hold this for a second.” And he hands you his maul.
You strain for a moment under the weight of the massive weapon before managing to lever it to the ground. It doesn’t seem humanly possible for Darius to wield this thing so easily, but he manages it.

Looking back to Terra, you see Darius standing in front of her in a martial arts stance.

“Watch me, Terra.” He says, falling deeper into the stance. “Arms and legs closer, but bend your knees slightly.”

Terra looks confused for a moment, but seems to understand and replicates Darius’s stance.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38259400

“Excellent!” Darius smiles. “You’ll find dodging a bit easier now.”

Terra moves around experimentally, hopping from place to pace with quite a bit of speed now. Huh, you guess everyone can benefit from martial arts a little.

“Wanna test it out?” You ask Terra. She looks up at you before nodding carefully.

You smile and draw Shellshocker’s ball from your belt and sending him out with a white flash. The Wartortle hits the ground on all fours, head twitching to identify threats. Seeing none, he relaxes and straightens up.

“Hey Shellshocker.” You call. “We’re doing some training for Terra. See if you can hit her with some water bursts while she dodges. Nothing too hard.”

Shellshocker nods and turns to face Terra. The little Larvitar drops into its combat stance again, ready for the Wartortle’s attacks.

The first jet is slow and Terra easily bobs away from it. The next one is faster, and the one after that is faster still. Terra keeps the pace up, weaving between the jets and staying dry. Then, Shellshocker steps it up. He begins firing multiple jets, targeting where Terra is heading, forcing her to change her strategy. She begins using feints, and proves adept at it, carefully avoiding further attacks while staying on her feet.

You and Darius watch the exchange calmly, making observations and quietly chatting. Eventually, you can see that Terra is tiring and you call Shellshocker off.

“Excellent job you two.” You say while patting them both on their heads. Shellshocker doesn’t seem to react much but you can tell he’s pleased. Terra on the other hand runs up to you and hugs your leg.

“Lets get some lunch.” Darius says. “After all, we’ve got quite a bit of work ahead of us.”

A quick stop at the mess hall and you and all your Pokemon are sated. Upon returning to the Field, you can see that all three of your candidates have arrived, along with the Major and Ivy. The Cadets are all wearing their uniforms, although you note that Katherine has tied her jacket around her waist instead and Ivy is carrying a large medical bag on her back. You note that Ryan is the only Cadet to be wearing armor, a leather set under his jacket. All the Cadets are armed.

The Major greets you and Darius as you approach. “I see you’ve made some interesting choices. I wish you luck. I won’t be interfering with your tests.”

His piece said, Cyril walks to the edge of the field, likely to observe. The Candidates and Ivy all look at you expectantly.

Each of you has been selected because it’s my firm belief that each of you is the best at what you do. As you know, I am Victor Kane, Team Leader. I’ll be taking the role of Tactician and Support.”

You gesture to Darius, standing to your right. “This is Darius Hammerworth, my Second-in-Command. He’ll be taking the role of Vanguard.”

You then point to Ivy, who stiffens slightly at being the center of attention. “This is Ivy Ravel. She’ll be taking the role of Squad Medic.”

You then point to Ryan, Katherine and Lyn, who are standing near each other. “Ryan Blackburn will be our Scout, if we believe he qualifies. Katherine Clarke and Lyn Strom are both being considered for the position of Engineer, hence the testing.”

"Now before we get started feel free to talk and familiarize yourselves with each other.” You continue. “Those that make the cut will be the ones standing together in the trials to come. You see that each of them is visibly affected by your words. Ivy, earlier seeming timid and shy, is standing taller and confidence burns in her eyes. Ryan too seems stronger and more sure of himself. Katherine on the other hand seems nervous, chewing her lip and looking at each of the other candidates. Lyn’s eyes are locked on to you and she seems… hungrier.

“Any questions?” You ask.

Ryan steps forward. In addition to his armor, there’s a folded bow of some sort slotted into a space on the quiver at his side and two heavy knives crossed across the small of his back. You spy the hilt of another knife poking out of the top of his boot.

“Yeah, I’ve got a question.” He says. “What kind of tests are we doing? I mean, I see the targets and the obstacle course but that can’t be everything.”

You nod. “Exactly. We’ll also be doing some heavy sparring and some practice Battles with our Pokemon. We’ll also be using the Park for an intense game of CTF with some varied rules.”

Ryan nods, satisfied with your answer.

Lyn then steps forward. “I also have a question. How come those two?” She points to Ivy and Darius. “Are already accepted in the Team?”

Darius snorts. “Flatterer.”

“And,” you continue. “Ivy is already accepted because on top of her skills as a Medic, her Pokemon's Psychic typing will be a great boon in the field. There are other factors as well, but those are her’s to tell.”

Lyn frowns but seems to accept your answer. She turns to begin talking to Katherine and Ryan but still seems slightly focused on you but on.

Ivy approaches you and you turns to meet her. To your surprise, she actually greets Darius instead and begins conversing with him, asking him several questions about himself. You decide to wait by the obstacle course while the others socialize, hanging your weapons up on the rack once more.

Eventually, the conversations die off and everyone moves over to you.

“Alright then,” You begin. “We’ll begin by running through the course. You all know what it’s like so don’t complain. And just to prove my statements earlier, I’m going to run it first.”

You zip your jacket up and take a deep breath. You’ve done this before but this time you need to make a big impression. Darius pulls a stopwatch out of the pocket of his coat and holds it up while you crouch down into a sprinter’s stance

“Ready… Set… GO!”

You push off with your right foot, catapulting yourself forward. The first horizontal log looms in front of you and you grip it with both hands and flip yourself over it. It’s a smooth, simple action that barely takes any effort. Repeating the actions for the next two logs is simple.

The following obstacle is slightly tougher, a horizontal bar set well above your head. Racing towards it, you jump and catch it with both hands. Flexing your midsection swings your legs up to the bar and your wrap them around it. A few twists, and you’re up and around the bar.

Dropping down to the other side brings you to the tire run. The real issue with the tire run is being precise without losing speed. A feat you manage to accomplish perfectly. Making sure that each foot lands exactly in the center of the tire, you pass through the run easily.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>38270894

The next obstacles are another series of horizontal logs and another high bar, all of which you breeze through handily. Right after that is the low crawl. Dropping to your stomach, you maneuver your arms and legs underneath you and quickly shuffle through the dirt under the neat to the other side. It’s normally pretty slow going, but your pride won’t let you fail.

After the low crawl is a series of strung up metal rods set high above you and slant slightly towards the ground away from you. The rods terminate in several wooden logs also set above your head and also slanting towards the ground. You know this obstacle, it’s a real bitch. Jumping up once more, you snag a metal rod and pull your legs up to circle it. You shimmy down the rod, keeping yourself moving at a steady pace before reaching the log the rod is embedded in. There, you flip yourself around the rod and climb up on top of the log. You don’t need to steady yourself as you run down the log, your balance is practically perfect.

Jumping off the log brings you to a high wooden wall. You pour on the speed as you approach the wall, jumping and catching the top and pulling yourself over it without too much trouble.

>[Cont.]
>>
Rolled 3, 17, 12, 1, 3 = 36 (5d20)

>>38270915

Another tire run, more horizontal logs, and finally, the last obstacle on the course: the wall climb. The heavy wooden stands close to three stories tall and the only method of making it up the sheer face is a single rough rope. You don’t hesitate, grabbing the rope with both hands and bracing your feet against the wooden surface. You haul yourself up while walking up against the wall itself. Your arms and legs ache and your lungs burn from the sheer amount of obstacles you’ve gone through, but you don’t let it show. Strength and discipline are necessary if you want to inspire your team.

Finally, after what feels like an eternity, you crest over the top of the wall and ring the bell placed there. You bend over, placing your hands on your knees, and pant for a few moments before taking a deep breath to steady yourself. Hold, release, breathe in again, hold, release, breath in, hold, wipe the sweat off, release, breathe normally. Your heart pounds slightly faster, and your lungs don’t hurt as much any more.

You turn to look down at the rest of the assembled squad. Darius is grinning up at you, holding up the stopwatch.

“4 minutes and 12 seconds!” Darius shouts.

Huh, it’s your personal best. The other Cadets seem pretty damn impressed.

"Now all of you need to either match it or beat it, together."

its more to see if they can work as a team naturally than by instructions rather if they could beat it.

I'd say it gets easier to wait for things like this, but I've been waiting for an Outsider update for a few years now, and for some reason I keep expecting the guy who made Kid Radd to make something new. The disappointment at not seeing that always hurts.

“Next.” You say with a grin, before swinging down the side of the wall.

Darius tosses you the stopwatch before moving to the starting point. His run is good in its own right. His biggest issue is the low crawl as his prodigious size makes it incredibly difficult for him to move at a decent pace in the cramped area. His final time is 5 minutes 8 seconds.

Ivy proves to be extremely agile, slipping over and through all the obstacles in her way. Her only real problems are the high bars, which take quite a bit of effort on her part, and the final wall climb. She’s sweaty, dirty, exhausted, but her smile resonates with you all too well. Her time is 5 minutes, 3 seconds.

Ryan proves to be the fastest, absolutely blazing through the course without any real issues. His time is 4 minutes flat. On the other hand, Katherine proves incredibly slow, struggling with nearly every obstacle. She finishes at 6 minutes 33 seconds, which is acceptable. Lyn has a minor problem with the wall climb but manages just fine with the rest of the course. Her time is 4 minutes, 29 seconds.

You all take a moment to get your breath back and grab some water from the nearby fountains.

As soon as you return to the fields, everyone turns to look at you again. You note that it’s almost like they’re accepting you as a leader.

Not bad guys, Katherine you might want to work on agility some for field work. Anyways enough of that on to the next activity!
>>
>>38280105

voting against singling out Katherine. I mean she's reluctant to join in the first place. let's not give her any shit.

kinda tempted to have them do it all over again.
>>
>>38280105
I agree with not singling out Katherine. Let's move on to the pokemon battles.
>>
>>38280105
Nothing I can think of besides moving on to the next portion.

>>38280224
Yeah I agree don't single her out she knows how she did, which as Sleepless said is acceptable.
>>
>>38280105

“Good job everyone.” You say. “Now, we’ll be holding Pokemon battles. I’d rather nobody’s Pokemon died today so make sure to hold back a bit.”

Ivy and Katherine seem a little nervous at this but don’t object. Ryan doesn’t seem to react at all and Lyn looks a little eager.

You survey the assembled candidates.

>Who will battle who and will you battle anyone yourself?
>>
>>38280941
Ryan and Darius
Katherine and Ivy
Lyn and us.
>>
>>38280978
This seems to pair potential skill sets well enough as anything. I agree.
>>
>>38281020
Well these were the versus section. Didn't want ryan getting swept by lyn or kat due to typing.
>>
>>38280941
I guess I'll jump on this one too.
>>38280978
>>
>>38280941
>>38280978
Yeah, this.
>>
I was gonna vote for letting them choose, but that sounds fine, too, especially since I'm gonna be outvoted anyway.

“First off,” You say. “Ryan, you’ll be fighting Darius. One Pokemon Each, just to see how well you can coordinate.”

Darius grins and begins walking to one end of the field that has been set aside for Pokemon Battles. Ryan walks to the opposite end while rolling a Pokeball into his hand. The two Trainers stare each other down across the field before simultaneously throwing their balls and calling out their Pokemon.

“Go, Vall!”

“Come on out Yamo!”

Two flashes of light reveal Yamo, Darius’s Blaziken and a Braviary that must be Vall. The Pokemon are both in high states of alert and appear to be analyzing each other and waiting on their Trainers for guidance before making any moves. Yamo crouches into a low fighting stance with her left hand stretched in front of her and her right curled into a cocked fist at her side. Vall sits on the ground, staring the Fire Fighter down with piercing eyes.

>>38282317

That’s when you notice that Vall is… Massive. You know that Braviary have a tendency to be big but Vall is enormous, standing over two meters in height. Ryan could easily ride the bird

You dismiss those thoughts, instead focusing on the battle that’s about to begin. Moving to the middle of the sidelines, you are flanked by Lyn and Katherine on your left and Ivy on your right.

You call out the rules. “This is a Practice Battle! The means that you should avoid killing each other’s Pokemon, no matter what. The match will end in five minutes or if one of the Pokemon is severely injured. Begin!” You back away from the field.

It’s Darius who acts first. “Yamo! Kata Fourteen!”

The Blaziken immediately gathers flames around its hands while drawing them back. She takes a single forward and executes a double punch, shooting two fireballs from her hands. Ryan’s response is unexpected; he makes a birdcall. It’s two whistles followed by a piercing cry that doesn’t seem like something the human throat would be able to make.

Immediately, Vall shoots up several feet on its wings which then give one heavy flap. Said flap generates a massive gust of air that slams into the twin fireballs causing them to explode. Said explosion requires you to shield your eyes from the dust that fills the field. You see the Braviary soar up into the sky on the hot air from the fireball’s destabilization.

>>38282339

Two whistles pierce the air, and Vall moves higher into the sky and hovers. It then flaps its wings hard enough to send blasts of air into the dust cloud where Yamo was last seen. The wind attacks end up clearing parts of the dust clouds as well revealing that Yamo is no longer there.

“Kata 23!” Darius’s baritone voices shouts.

And that’s when the Blaziken leaps out of the dust cloud on the side closest to Ryan, launching herself on her powerful legs to a height even with Vall. A massive torrent of flames issues from her mouth to engulf the blindsided Braviary. The fire attack cuts off just as soon as it begins revealed a badly singed Vall. The Wind Pokemon’s feathers shielded the majority of its body from burns but it’s a serious injury in your book. Yamo, her surprise attack over, drops to the ground in a crouch.

“Match over!” You shout. “Trainers, recall your Pokemon!”

Twin beams of red light streak out from Darius and Ryan, recalling their Pokemon to stasis.

The two Trainers walk back over to you, shaking hands.

>Address them?

>The Next Post will be the last one for the night. I’m Exhausted.

good going, I guess? a fighting-type beating a flying-type injury-free is kind of badass, especially if dual-type normals don't exist in this universe. I did want to also assess their actual battlefield stats though, i.e. how they fight along with their porkymans. oh well, time for the next pair.
>>
>>38282355
Compliment Ryan on his method of communication. It's very innovative, and he's obviously got it down very well. Other than that, next match.
>>
>>38282355
I'll second
>>38282493
>>
>>38282355

“Excellent work you two.” You say. “Ryan, your communication technique is impressive.”

Ryan shrugs. “Seemed to me that the best way to get a Pokemon to do what you want is to speak their language.”

“Makes sense.” You nod. “Alright then, Ivy, Katherine, you two are up!”

[End Thread]

>I’ll stick around to answer questions. Next thread will probably be on Friday.
>>
might've been already stated in his profile, but I don't remember that it was. Ryan can literally talk to bird animals? is that a thing we can learn, to talk to pokemon in their own language?
>>
>>38282724
If I remember right Darius only has the one pokemon. So is Darius adverse to having more than one pokemon or has he just not gotten around to getting another? We might have to really start pressuring him to pick up at least a second. It seems like having any less then what you are capable of is a luxury a team like ours can't afford. Also would Darius have been able to sweep Ryan's full team?

Thanks for running.
>>
>>38282774

It was not stated in his profile. Ryan's communication technique combined with the empathetic link between him and his Pokemon allows him to converse with them pretty well. He only has a rudimentary understanding of bird languages though so he can't communicate as well with wild Bird Pokemon.

And yes, it's possible for you to learn Pokemon languages. Most bonded Pokemon are capable of understanding a Trainer's languages though.

>>38282836

You'd have to ask Darius that himself.

And yes, it's quite possible that Yamo would have defeated Ryan's entire team. Ryan has a Braviary and Pidgeot that he actually fights with but his Emolga is more of a pet. A very hard to detect pet.
