Last time, on Feral Necromancer Quest: You set out to the mountains to acquire the minerals you needed for Bathory's body with both of your elven companions. There was some chatting and theoretical flirtation between the elves that you encouraged. You fell asleep during your watch, and while you were unconscious someone stole your army. You did not take kindly to this, and considered retreating to safety, but ultimately you decided to venture into the caves with whatever animal minions you could gather. Instead of the people responsible for stealing your minions, you encountered a small band of dwarves- stout, short humanoids, wearing no clothes at all, but only armour, using their ample body hair and beards as padding, where humans or elves would use cloth and leather. You learned from them that the dark elves have been constantly harassing them, and are the likely perpetrators of mass minion-theft. You ventured deeper into the tunnels and found those responsible, easily dispatching them with your superior necromancy. You raised some of their bodies to serve as spellcasters in your army. You traded the remaining heads to the dwarves for iron and whatever minerals you needed to create a body for Bathory. You returned to your ruin. That is where the tenth installment of Feral Necromancer Quest ended.

Housekeeping:

Levelup discussion was confused and a close call. I've upped intelligence to 3, as many of you wanted to raise alchemy, which would be impossible at this point, but intelligence would help when rolling the skill. If there is strong opposition to the idea, I can call for a re-vote.

You are Vlad Tepish.

Your Holdings: A renovated ancient Elven ruin. A well hidden and protected cave, now housing liberated human slaves.

Your minions: 37 normal undead (orcish, elven and human skeletons and zombies, 13 armed with bows, rest with crude melee weapons). Undead orcish shaman, 5 Undead Drow necromancers. Skeletal elk mount. You control 50/50 minions. Your control is absolute.

Your relationships: Lathrien, your apprentice (agreeable), Ragda and Gerda, liberated old ladies of your tribe (friendly(ish)). Melandie, elven huntress (ally). Bathory, the spirit of your lover housed in her skull (agreeable). Bound spirit of an elven scout (bound to an owl homonculus). Bound spirit of a gnoll pyromancer (bound). Bound spirit of an orc demonologist (Bound). Bound spirit of a black dragon (bound). Elven tribe (open diplomacy), Gnoll tribe (allies/treacherous bastards), Human liberated slaves (likely allies), Dwarf tribe (open trade), Drow (enemies).

Your skills, stats, traits: In the pastebin above, along with your available spells and equipment.

Your goals: Find a body for Bathory, achieve immortality, grow your legacy.

You stand in front of the ruin you have called your home for nearly two months now. You finally feel you have everything you need to give a body to your beloved. The creation of the body will be difficult, and there are choices to be made about what exactly you will make it to be. You have grim purpose in your features, even the elves can see that, and so are staying silent some way behind you. They are good kids. Maybe they will find something between them, even a fraction of what you had with Bathory. It would be good for them.

>No time to waste. You are doing this as soon as possible. Get to the lab.

Patience.

You cannot afford to give Bathory an inferior body. You cannot afford the distraction of tiredness mess up your magic when transferring the spirit. Everything has got to be perfect. So you decide to rest.

'We break for the night, go have some sleep, or whatever you like,' you say to the elves, and retire yourself.

You have difficulty in sleeping, as you imagine the perfect body you could make for Bathory, how thankful she would be. You have difficulty in sleeping as you imagine screwing up, making an abomination, or destroying her spirit permanently. You lay motionless in your bed for hours before you manage to fall into a fevered sleep.

For all that, you awake refreshed, and ready to face the challenges of the day. You are the greatest power in the region. That you are aware of. You can do at least this much for your beloved.

>MAJOR GOAL DECISION
>ALCHEMICAL BODY FOR BATHORY
Pros:
Versatility. The body can be very lifelike, but you can also improve it in certain ways, such as using stronger than organic materials, preventing aging, or allowing for energy sources other than food to fuel it.

Ethics: You are hurting nobody in making this, and this would do no harm to Bathory.

Cons:
Fragility: Even if you make the body tougher than human, it will still function as a mortal body. What is more, if Bathory dies again, you would not be able to bind her spirit again (although you can transfer it, if the body becomes damaged or outmoded.)

Power: The body might be weaker than other options you might have later on into the game.

This is what is best for Bathory. You know that given time you could find other ways to give her a body, but you doubt that any other would be as harmless to the world at large and Bathory herself.

You are going to make her a body with alchemy. You have been practicing for a long time, and are quite certain that you can manage to do it. Maybe even do it well. A human body can be quite straightforward, once you have seen it from the inside out a few times.

Still, you should consult with Bathory first. You know you could make some improvements to the body, make it something more than human, but you are not sure if Bathory would want that. She might have some ideas of her own too, something you have not considered.

So you sense the skeleton that is working as her chaperon at the moment, and go looking for her. You find her in the library, reading a book. Her lower jaw moves slightly, as she is trying to mouth the words while reading. It is better than that cold darkness you had given to her when you first preserved her spirit. Now you can give her something better yet.

'Bathory,' you say.
'Vlad! Do not sneak up on me like that! What is it?' Bathory says.
'I think I have found it. A way to give you a body,' you say.
'Good. What is it?' Bathory says.
'Ancient elven art. Alchemy. It can be used to create bodies that are very lifelike,' you say, 'And with my magic I can transfer your spirit into an alchemical body, it should work for you just like a real one.'
'But it wouldn't be really real?' Bathory says.
'Bathory, without robbing some poor woman of her spirit, I cannot get you a truly real body. But it would be almost the same. Unless you wanted it enhanced in some way,' you say.
'I just want to be human again,' Bathory says.

>Agree. If that is her wish, so be it.
>At least tell her the options. See if she is tempted.
>Insist. You are not going to make a frail, human body for Bathory. You are not losing her again.

'Do you understand what you ask? You ask me to murder someone and much worse,' you say.
'Like you did to me?' Bathory says.
'Worse. I cannot be sure the spirit of that woman would even survive. Please, consider alchemy,' you say.
'I am sorry. You are right, of course. I just wanted a human body so badly,' Bathory says.
'I promise, you will not even be able to tell the difference,' you say.
'Good. What are these 'enhancements' you mentioned?' Bathory says.
'Well, it would be easy to make it so the body doesn't age. I could make your bones harder and stronger, so you would not be hurt easily. I guess if you truly wanted I could change your looks a little,' you say.
'That does not sound so bad,' Bathory says.
'That is what I thought. What do you want?' you say.
'Well, if you plan to live forever, I think I should be with you. I would like to be human in other ways,' Bathory says, 'except...'
'Except what, dear?' you say.
'Well, I thought I should be able to protect myself better,' Bathory says.
'What are you thinking of, exactly?' you say.
'Can I have swords that come out of my hands?' Bathory says.
'Swords... Out of your... What?' you say.
'There is this story, where this man has swords that come out of his hands. I thought it would be good to protect myself,' Bathory says.
'I...' you say.

>'Of course, love, whatever you want.'
>'Dear, that is impractical. I can teach you how to use a weapon, that would be easier and would work much better.

>>
>>38378836
Maybe we could make some special swords that her hands slot into?
>>
'Dear, that is impractical. It would hurt every time they came out, and a normal sword would serve better in combat,' you say.
'Will you teach me to use one properly, then?' Bathory says.
'Of course, love,' you say.
'Very well, I suppose it is a bit silly. I should not be reading these old adventure books, so little fact in them, so much fiction,' Bathory says.
'Would you like to come watch me make the body, you could direct me if I mess something up in the appearance,' you say.
'Yes. I should like to do that,' Bathory says.

You descend into your laboratory, it is a well lit room, and now you have ingredients- herbal, mineral, chemical, magical. You are happy you have so much dragon blood, it will be so much easier to work with, although you will have to use up a great deal.

25! Love conquers all dicerolls.

It is long and arduous work. You quickly realize why the creations in the basement underneath your ruin were so misshapen and terrifying. It is very difficult to create a perfectly human form by hand without it looking a little bit off. What saves you is that the body you are building on this table in this lab is a body you know better than even your own. You have admired and caressed every inch of it. You know exactly what it is supposed to look like. You remember exactly what Bathory looks like.

Nonetheless, it takes hours to get even the bones right. You have to go one by one, you cannot rely on alchemical formulas to do it for you like you did with the animals. You simply do not trust the numbers, besides, you have to change the density of the bones one by one, for optimal toughness and strength.

That done with, you move on to the flesh and the organs. It is nothing you haven't seen before, although Bathory makes the skeleton turn her away, once you start introducing blood into the system. You use mostly dragon blood, diluted and with its mood-altering properties neutralized. You also use some artificial blood, which you were surprised to find is mostly salt-water.

Then comes the skin, and you craft the features of your beloved with exceptional care. She directs you at some points, remembering flaws you had never noticed or cared about. Between the two of you you make a body that is identical to Bathory's old body.

'This is very strange,' Bathory says.
'I can only imagine. Now, try to relax, I will transfer your spirit. It should not hurt nearly as much as last time,' you say.
'I pray it won't,' Bathory says.

26! 10 points over DC. Some kind of advanced success.

You are ever so gentle. More so than ever you have ever been when moving a spirit. You feel Bathory's soul in the air as truly as you would feel the wind, or a shout, or mist. You gently lead it to the body on your table and let her spirit enter the brain.

It is a flawless operation. You would be shocked if she felt any discomfort at all.

This is Bathory Tepish.

She is the lover of Vlad Tepish, given an alchemical body, ageless, stronger and faster than the one she had in life.

You met Bathory when her tribe visited yours, nearly fifteen winters ago. You fell in love with her as soon as you laid eyes on her and heard her stories. It took her some time to see you in the same way, but over the years you developed love that was well known as the strongest in your tribe.

Traits:
>Improved Physical Stats:
>If/when Bathory is PoV character, she rolls all physical checks at a +2 bonus
>Health and Stamina are improved

In your tribe, Bathory worked as (choose 1):
>Huntress
>Storyteller and Lorekeeper
>Scout
>She was the next in line to be Elder
>She did menial, labour intensive tasks
>She could gather food and other neccessities from even the most difficult to reach places.

Socially she was:
>In close contact with her old tribe, often leaving your tribe for weeks and making few friends in your tribe.
>In touch with her old tribe whenever she could afford to spare the time, but also had some friends among your tribe
>Completely abandoned her old tribe to be with yours.
>Not really that sociable. She focused on her work, you being her only real relation.

She knew of your magic, and while she was not entirely comfortable with it, there was a time when she trusted you fully. Perhaps, now she will trust you again. Perhaps it will take much longer to reach that point.

Bathory opens her eyes. She shivers, as the body temperature of the homunculus rises to that of this room. She laughs. She cries a little too.

So guys, what say when we get the chance we become a vampire, and use alchemy to find a blood substitute and a way to beat the sunlight? It's not like we wont have forever to figure it out.

>>
She was the lorekeeper of your old tribe, so it was expected for her to travel on an occasion. This is when she would meet with her parents and siblings in her own tribe. She was well respected in the community of your tribe, better than you certainly, but she also had solid links with her old tribe, as well as a few other human tribes in the region.

Indeed, she did much the same that you have been doing lately. Not raising the dead and desecrating elven ruins, but diplomacy. She would go to meet other tribes, ask for information and trade, and prevent hostilities. She had never been shot at with arrows, so her track record at least is better than yours.

'Vlad, I... When you said this body would be false I thought...' Bathory stands up, and gives you a warm, long hug. Her being nude does not stop her, and you certainly do not mind that. When you go to kiss her, she stops you, however.

'No, not yet. You will have to earn that,' Bathory says. But she smiles.
'Of course, my love,' you say.
'Now, where can I find some clothes,' Bathory says.

Congratulations! You have given Bathory a body. Your relationship with Bathory has improved to Warm.

That said, clothes are a little bit of a problem. None of you can make fabric, the fabric found in the ruins is in a very bad state and the leathers you've sown together for your clothes are generally one outfit per person. You have recently killed a large number of animals, however, and clothing Bathory takes only some time, as you still had some cured hides left over. It is a simple jacket and skirt, but it will suffice for now.

'So, does this body please you?' you say.
'It is marvelous, I feel better than ever. Wait, did you 'enhance' it in any way?' Bathory says.
'Not much. It is human, or as human as I could make it. Just a little stronger, faster, tougher,' you say.
'I guess I will accept that, Vlad,' Bathory says.
'I am so glad it worked out. I am so happy to see you alive again,' you say.

For the end of this thread, I'm thinking we take some kind of balance between a couple crafts, like tailoring and smithing, so that we can make Bathory actual clothes + a pimp sword. (I know we have that short sword of acid, but isn't that Lathrein's sword?)

'Bathory, you know I only wanted to...' you say.
'Oh shut up, Vlad. You've been going on and on about how sorry you are, you fixed it, get over it,' Bathory says.

You walk the ruin, gathering all of your allies, or as Bathory calls them, your friends. Perhaps they might be that. You gather all of them outside, in the most living-looking area of the woods.

'Lathrien, Melandie, ladies, this is Bathory. She is my beloved and the reason I am here,' you say.
'You should not blame me,' Bathory says.
'I am not. I am happy with where I am now. You are back,' you say.

Dwarves don't know much about smithing any more, is the thing. For instance, if we chose to attempt to make something close to the Sword of the Blackguard, they'd be hard-pressed to create it, since it's likely they lack the skills to create one. 16! Mostly just fishing for crits so you could get sword skill.

Your practice goes well, you spend hours fighting each other with swords. While Bathory's enhanced body is quick to react, you have accrued some experience in real fighting and can match her easily.

At first it is easy to fight her, but she learns quickly and by nightfall she has the basics down.

You decide to create a homunculus for the spirit of the orc demonologist. You are not going to use his magic, and he is vicious enough and a fighter, and so you feel he would be the ideal expendable protector for Bathory.

You were thinking of making a large dog, with as many enhancements as you could possibly fit in it.

21! Blackjack! Not full success though.

That thing is just a little bit terrifying when you are done with it. The iron teeth are sharpened to a fine point and horrid weapons. The muscles are bulging to a ridiculous proportion. Its skin is very tough, almost armoured.

All these enhancements have, however made it impossible to give the creature any real speed. It is just a little slower than an average dog, but it is not as fast as you could have made it.

You easily transfer the spirit to your newest creation. It growls and barks in pleasure and rage. He tries to laugh, but it comes out even more disturbing than his laughter on the battlefield. The dog's vocal chords are not made for humanoid speech in the first place, the modifications you made to its jaw make it completely impossible.

It is simple enough. The dog will guard Bathory and you have told her that much already. Your priority for now is to talk to the dragon spirit. If Bathory is going to use that sword, you may as well see what you can learn from it, before you pass it on to her.

Note: draconic magic will have very few, if any combos up until the very highest tiers of it and another school. It will also not be ridiculously powerful. But the upper-tier combos will be devastating. It is very much a school where lower tiers are an investment more than a power boost.

'I am not so sure anymore. But I suppose if it protects me that is fine,' Bathory says.
'Look, maybe we can do something nice together,' you say.
'I don't know, this forest looks pretty dead, the ruin is not welcoming either,' Bathory says.

Dragon shape is.... a DISTANT possibility. You would have to pick up another school and get BOTH high. Thing with dragons is, they live a long time and most know their magic at a high level before they even start burninating villages, so their magic is pretty basic at low levels.

'Nonsense. I always have time for you,' you say.

'No, Let's go, right now. There is this beautiful glade, and many places to see from there, try riding my elk,' you say.

I should be posting at LEAST weekly from now on.

'The elves can be very conservative. And they don't much like me. Be cautious,' you say.
'I know. I would love to try,' Bathory says.
'Of course. Would you like to go alone?' you say.

She holds out a hand. You hold it and both of you walk into the elven encampment. The elves recognize you and there are some angry looks towards you.

'Greetings, friends!' Bathory says. She sounds like light.

The staring does not cease. There is a moment of silence where you are ready to attack at a moment's notice.

'Greetings, traveler,' says one elf, you suspect a bit older than average. Not that you can tell for certain with the elves.

'It is a pleasure to visit your camp. The wonders of the ancients are well known to all who travel this land,' Bathory says.
'Better known to some than to others,' an elf says derisively.
'Indeed, we have had the pleasure of staying in one of your ruins. I have been assured that you would not find much gain there,' Bathory says.
'Maybe we wouldn't. So, what brings you here?' the first elf says.
'I have been unable to travel for some time, before Vlad cured me. Now that I can, I wanted to meet his friends,' Bathory says.

From someone else it might have sounded naive, or forced. Bathory makes it sound true.

'Of course. Please, sit down. Let us have some wine,' the elf says.

You are made comfortable near a fire. You have not been this relaxed in the elven camp, well, ever.

You decide to follow Bathory's lead, until you realize she is simply doing her best to enjoy herself. She eats elven food, drinks elven wine and is having conversations in her somewhat broken elven happily with the rest of the tribe.

For a while you keep up, but when the elven wine starts clouding your mind...

19. Pass.

You stay sober enough. The day is pleasant and Bathory has perhaps a little bit too much to drink. There is talk and laughter, and lovely food. You do your best to enjoy it, but you cannot seem to quite let go and enjoy it fully, the previous encounters with elves have soured you to their hospitality too much.

Nonetheless, you feel you have made serious advancement in your relations with the elves. Once you move off their land it is clear that Bathory was not as drunk as she appeared to be either.

'All strength all the time will only make people afraid,' Bathory says.
'If you say so,' you say.
'It is true. Although, I have had entirely too much wine, so I cannot exactly be held responsible,' Bathory says.
'That was impressive. Maybe they would not have shot me if you had been with me when we first met,' you say.
'Back then, I would have scratched your eyes out,' Bathory says. She laughs.
'Do you want to go back home then?' you say.
'Home. Strange that the ruin has become that for you. But yes. Take me home, Vlad,' Bathory says.

You come back to the ruin and Bathory goes off to sleep off the wine. Your head is clear enough yet. You could do some work.

That is complicated. You understand the principles behind metallurgy, but you do not think you have the sort of furnaces that could let you smelt steel, or truly high-tier iron. You understand the very basics, but you feel that the dwarves in the mountains could do a better job at ironcraft than you could.

It is late, these have been some event-packed days. You have Bathory back. It still does not seem entirely real. But you did it, you brought her back, truly and in a form pleasing to her.

You read. And read. And read. You read until the letters start moving. You see the letters turn into tiny dwarves, giving you advice on metallurgy. 'You have to have a red-haired boy to piss on the red-hot iron.' they say. 'You have to quench it in bloooood,' they say.

You find yourself fairly certain you have fallen asleep. Nonetheless, you might as well try to learn something from this.

There is a lot of shouting about praying to the mountain father. A lot of implications that your beard is inferior. But there is also a lot of legitimate smithing advice.

Well, Bathory is clearly not feeling great and you do need the alchemy training. You whip up a simple cure, it should work well for a hangover. You are done in less than fifteen minutes.

You walk up to Bathory, and she doesn't look too pleased to see light reflecting off anything.

'Here, drink this,' you say.
She does.
'That's disgusting, Vlad, why would you... Oh. Well, that works. Thank you. What a night,' Bathory says.
'You are welcome, as always. So would you like to...' you wink and wiggle your eyebrows suggestively.
'Vlad!' She says. She slaps you lightly, but then gives you a peck on the cheek 'You may still have a chance. Some day.'

And with that concludes Feral Necromancer Quest XI.

You fucking brought Bathory back to life. 3 exp, making it 5 exp total saved up, what'd you expect. Once more, you can raise just about anything. Illusion and Draconic magic cost 2 points each to raise, Shamanism and Necromancy 3 points each. Intelligence is 4 points to raise, look at pastebin for other stats.

Going with

You have increased Shamanism to IV!

You have learned to use Totems!

Totems are magical conduits that can be used to channel any of your evocations (short cast time spells) automatically. These include reanimate dead, drain life, plague, curse, and others. While specific uses are varied, and the spell might not work exactly the same as it would when you cast it, the general rule is that the spell loses some of its immediate power in exchange for being permanent (unless the totem is destroyed) and covering and area of 100m diameter circle around the totem. So, for example, any dead bodies near a totem of reanimate dead would come to life in a few hours, a totem of drain life would slowly drain energy from nearby living creatures, transferring it to you, and so forth. In addition to totems of your existing spells you also gain

Totem of Alarm: this totem creates a high pitched, loud noise, whenever an intelligent creature enters its area of effect.

Furthermore, as you have reached Shamanism IV, all animal undead cost 1/4 of their cost to maintain. It is now a reasonable strategy to replace a significant portion of your minions with animals, what they lack in intelligence and weaponry, they make up in ferocity and quantity.

You gain Draconic Magic II!

You learn Fear! As a magical attack, you can cause terror in a single enemy. The effects might vary depending on the character of the target and the degree of success, but on a great success the enemy will most likely attempt to flee from you.
>>
>>38387878
Can we make fear totems?
>>
>>38387920
Yes. Totems are one of the few exceptions to the general 'no low level draconic magic combos' rule. Again, the effect would be reduced to causing some discomfort and enhancing existing fears, rather than causing the same terror that you might cause by directly attacking someone with a Fear spell.
>>
>>38387920
Also would a fear totem in our creepy ass dead forest work better than in a non-terrifying setting?
>>
>>38387983
Could help keep people off our lawn. Especially as our lawn is pretty aggressive.
If we learnt pyromancy would a pyromancy totem just set a 100m patch on fire?
>>
>>38388023
It would certainly stack to some extent. However, anyone brave enough to enter your magical forest uninvited is unlikely to be held off by the little extra fear given off by the totem. It would still be useful in keeping your enemies off-guard, of course.

>>38388055
Yes, but the effect would be more along the lines of intense heat and smoldering grass, rather than an inferno of flame. It would certainly make passing through it very uncomfortable and likely damaging, but not impossible.

That is pretty much the answer to all non-ritual spells. Yes, you can do it, no the effects are not going to be as spectacular as they would be if you cast the spell directly.
>>
>>38388132
Do totems need to be out in the open to be effective? i.e needs to be within sight range to work, or can we bury the things 5 feet deep so nobody could find it without complex triangulation?
>>
>>38388132
Could we stack totems to get a dual effect? Say a life drain totem with a fear totem one on the other cause the target to loose life and at the same time be afraid?
>>
>>38377969
I really like this
>>
>>38387878
Then we mass produce Drain Life Totems and shove them into our drow corpses.

Speaking of, we need to interrogate that bound drow still don't we?
>>
>>38388434
That's fucking smart idea. We need more info on what's happening with the drows.
having a few drain life totems. And have the drowsiness walk around their teritory. Weakening the enemy before we head over to them.
I really want to grab a few more dozen drowning heads. And see if the dwarfs will trade some more. Since we're helping destroy their enemy.
>>
So what happened to the necromancer god? he seems like a distant BBEG
>>
I bet we could take some skeletons and stuff totems of plague and/or drain life in their ribcages and then make a few more that have raise dead in them. Boom - mobile zombie apocalypse.
>>
