You are Clarissa, a high-school student, Kimiko's Substitute Shinigami and Karakura Town's only spiritual balancer and protector.

After a brief and ultimately unsuccessful encounter with one of the threats haunting this town, you can barely move your partially incorporeal form. Well, all things considered, you did pretty well - you 'killed' the Hollow designated as 'Clay Bone', as meaningless as that ended up being; the Hollow simply restored itself and then retreated into whatever world it emerged from.

Now, you're being dragged towards your friend's house by the Shinigami you are acting as a substitute for, who, after having received a severe injury from that very same Clay Bone, is currently occupying the body of your dead girlfriend for the duration of her recovery. If it wasn't for her magical support during the battle, you'd probably be dead, impaled or torn to shreds by the Hollow's man-sized claws.

You enter Naoko's two-roomed flat. Chappy, the artificial soul occupying your physical body, has caught up with the two of you some time down the road. The hallway is a bit too small to comfortably fit three people at once, but thankfully, it's not like you have to undress or take your shoes off or anything like that - you're a ghost, and you can't get anything dirty, so you just walk right in. Moving faster than a snail is kind of hard, though.

"So, what's wrong with her?" Kimiko asks when you enter the bedroom. She walks closer to the unconscious Naoko, and puts the back of her delicate hand against the girl's forehead. She promptly takes it away. "Just a cold?"

"No, she's... saying stuff. I think it's something more serious than a cold. I don't know. Just call the doctor." You tell her, though Kimiko's already punching in a number written down on a note. She makes the call, introduces herself as Naoko's friend, and soon tells you that the doctor said he's 'on his way'. Kimiko turns back to the sick girl, observing her curiously.

In the meantime, you shamble a bit closer to the bed and put your hands on it, trying to ease the burden of keeping your body upright.

There's a bit of a silence.

"What are the Quincy? Could you tell me more about those?" You give yourself a light push off the bed, standing back up again. You probably won't be able to keep that up for long, though.

"Quincy? Is this girl a Quincy?" Kimiko asks, to which you shrug. You don't really know. "Well, the Quincy are..." You give her a skeptical glare, and tell her to make the explanation as simple as possible. You really don't have the patience to deal with anything more complex than not at all. Kimiko pauses, probably trying to think of a good way. "...They're like spiritual vigilantees, I guess. They, just like the Shinigami, took on the job of protecting souls and slaying Hollows, except they were humans."

"Naoko said that the Shinigami killed them all. I kind of doubt she was lying. Was she wrong, then?" You ask and sit on the edge of the bed, letting yourself relax a bit; you feel that if you let yourself go too much, you'll just drop asleep, though.

"She's neither wrong nor lying. Two hundred years ago, the Quincy were all killed." Kimiko pauses, carefully looking your way, as if to gauge your reaction.

"Just keep going. I'll stop if I have a question. Quit fishing me for reactions, I'm listening."

"I told you before, but when a Shinigami slays a Hollow with his Zanpakuto, the Hollow doesn't really 'die'. The soul is purified of the evil and sins it committed in its death, and is then sent to Soul Society to resume a peaceful life. Now, the Quincy..." The girl folds her arms on her chest as she continues. "The spiritual bows they wielded had no such property. The Quincy could only bring about destruction."

"I guess I can piece it from there. Innocent people were getting killed instead of being sent to Soul Society. But did they at least try to explain it to them? I mean, it worked for Naoko... I think."

(1/2)
>>
>>38422124
"Clarissa, the fact that souls were being destroyed wasn't even the biggest concern for the Shinigami. I believe I had already mentioned how the Shinigami also act as the balancers in the world's spiritual cycle of reincarnation. If souls do not go to Soul Society and only leave from there, it means that the human world will eventually be overpopulated with souls. If something like that happened, it would be a literal end of the world."

"...Did the Quincy know that?"

"I'm sure they did. But they refused to back down, maybe because of their beliefs or ideologies... or pride. The Shinigami needed to take action before it was too late. The Quincy had to be exterminated, and I've never really thought that the Shinigami were in the wrong. Honestly, I still don't."

She must have noticed the suspicious way with which you were looking at her, even though you tried to hide it.

"Don't worry," She reassures you. "I won't do anything to this girl even if she is a Quincy, as long as she's not hostile to Shinigami. She can't cause any damage on her own to the spiritual cycle, even if she is strong. Though, I can't really feel anything too out of the ordinary from her... she should be about the same as you. Of course, that's not the case at all, but... I guess that just means she's really skilled."

You sigh in relief. Kimiko walks away from Naoko, and stands in front of you.

"But I want to know. What do you think about the Quincy conflict now that you know what happened, Clarissa?" Her voice still retains its casual notes, but her expression seems pretty serious.

>"I agree with the Shinigami. They did a horrible thing, but it sounds like the Quincy didn't give them much of a choice."
>"They should have left the Quincy alone. They were only killing Hollows, so they were saving innocent souls and humans when the Shinigami couldn't."

Hey, since Kimiko didn't notice anything off with Naoko, and 'a cold' would be lame as shit, she probably has some kinda Quincy-related malady right? That would explain why Kimiko didn't recognize it despite it probably being a spiritual issue which you'd think Shingami are fairly well-versed it.

"So the Quincy were all fanatics willing to lay down their lives for their reasons, or were they told to do that by whoever led them? It sounds kind of sketchy. I have a feeling the Shinigami didn't really explore all the options," You tell Kimiko, who seems to have her interest peaked by your answer. It quickly fades when you shrug and continue, though. "But, honestly, you can't really expect me to say anything from just your abridged version. You explained a lot of stuff to me, but I still don't really have any real opinions of my own. I still barely know anything, Naoko."

"Kimiko." She corrects you.

"Right. Slip of the tongue. I know so many girls whose names end with 'ko' that I'm surprised it didn't happen earlier."

"Well, your answer was probably the most mature option, even if a bit boring. Can't say I expected something like that from you. I thought you'd try to be a hero of justice and try to figure out the 'perfect solution'." Kimiko smirks.

"Right. Real funny. Help me up, I'll go lie down for a bit."

"What do you mean? There's a bed right here. A big one, too."

"It's occupied." In response to that, the girl pushes you down, and you quite helplessly drop on the bed. She then moves around and drags you towards the pillows. You cuss and try to struggle your way out of her grasp, but you can barely move. Kimiko then forcibly covers you with the blanket, and holds you by the shoulders to prevent an escape.

"What's the big idea, you... pervert!" You yell at her, and she lets go. Before you can sluggishly pull yourself out, she makes herself an obstacle by lying at your side. She's like a paperweight that's keeping the sheets over you, and you're pretty helpless even against her meager weight.

"Don't order my body around! It's weird! And get out already, you idiot! I'll rest, just in another bed, god damn it!"

"Chappy'll get us all something to eat, we get to rest, and we get to look over Naoko at the same time. It's an ideal solution!"

...

>Shove her off the bed. She's on the very edge, so you can probably pull it off if you try a little harder.

You stop struggling. Thinking about it more, the situation could really be worse. You should really think about conserving energy rather than partaking in Kimiko's antics. You let out an exasperated sigh to show off how annoyed you are by this outcome and with how much reluctance you accepted your surrender.

After enduring Kimiko's mischievous, quiet giggling for a bit, you ask another question.

"Do you think Naoko's condition has something to do with... anything spiritual?"

"Nothing I would know about." Kimiko shakes her head and closes her eyes. "Maybe she overexerted herself, or was just unlucky enough to catch a cold."

"I dunno. Seems a bit nasty for a cold," You say. Kimiko turns your way with a rising smirk. "...Are you going to make a 'japanese cold' joke again?"

Her eyes widen a bit and the smile quickly fades. She turns away, looking back towards the ceiling. "I was going to. 'Again', though? Huh..."

"...What? You think she has the same thing? Like me, back when I first... took up the job?"

Kimiko shrugs. "It's probably exertion. I can't say for sure, though, since I'm not a doctor... or a psychologist. I think you should just relax and try not to worry."

You do try to relax and close your eyes for a bit. Sleep is too alluring, and you're quickly pulled in. A stray thought unintentionally keeps you awake.

"Oh, right. Shouldn't I get back into my body? You said that would help with recovery, isn't that right?" You turn your head towards Kimiko. She's managed to doze off as well; one of her eyes lazily opens to look your way.

"It's more convenient this way because Chappy can cook for us and take care of us," She smiles again. Probably feels nice to have a cute girl's body with a cute bunny personality as your personal butler... or something. It's kind of messed up, actually. "Eating a lot of food will help your recovery. And I'm not messing around here, either. Shinigami are the only beings in Soul Society who can feel hunger, and that's because they have spiritual power. So... it's clearly correlated and you should eat as much as you can." She closes her eyes again.

Sleep is really tempting, but you have a lot of questions remaining, and there's only so much time left before the doctor gets here.

Watching her so helplessly dazing off begs a pretty obvious question.

"Are you alright, Kimiko? You casted a whole bunch of spells out there."

The girl sighs. It doesn't feel like she's going to reply with a pleasant answer.

"I feel quite terrible. I was a few days too early to be trying something like that. Did you see that last Soukatsui I fired?" She pauses when she sees the confused look you're giving her. She explains that it's the name of the spell she was shooting. "Well, it really felt like I 'pulled a muscle' with that one. Not literally, of course. My muscles are fine. I'll have to stuff my face full of food if I intend to get back to full in a week..."

"I can patrol on my own if you need me to." You assure her.

"Hah, you're concerned about me? It'll be a miracle if you get into a good enough shape to fight a coffee table by tonight," She puts her hands behind her head after replying with a scoff. "I can still move around, at least. You can barely lift a pillow. We'll be taking a break for tonight. Let's hope that no Hollows pop up."

"It's not like I can't perform a konso on some spirits. A Hollow's going to be hard to fight in this shape, but I can totally pull it off." You smirk. Kimiko lets out a loud yawn, maybe unimpressed by your confidence.

"No, it's decided..."

"...We're going on a patrol tonight, yeah."

"I really will tie you to your bed if you keep that up, you know."

"I'm just kidding. We'll figure it out when the time comes." You chuckle a bit. The girl sighs, reluctantly accepting the compromise. She doesn't seem to share your optimism at all, though.

"How is it troublesome, Kimiko?" You ask her, to which she frowns.

"It's... complicated. When a Shinigami can't handle their work, they get punished."

"Punished? How?"

Her expression gets even more strained; she's very reluctant to answer, like the question's grating on her.

"I really don't want to talk about it, Clarissa." She mutters.

"What? That bad?" You lift an eyebrow.

"Well... Shinigami have a very important job. If you mess up, there will obviously be grave consequences. It's incentive for others not to mess up, you know? And... you can probably tell how hard I screwed everything up..." She continues regretfully mumbling.

"Guess we won't be calling for help if it's that dire, then?" You say. It's at that moment that Chappy interrupts, arriving with a couple of plates of freshly cooked omelet, and carefully hands them to you and Kimiko with a cutesy smile on its face (which is actually your face). The pretty, well-endowed 'maid' in a high-school girl uniform then goes off to bring you some tea, and then Kimiko tells it to wait outside the room.

...This is really weird.

You perform a few 'tests' and realize that you can actually eat human food as a Shinigami. It's kind of strange, but it works, so whatever. You're hungry enough to not dwell too much on it.

"Can't we just fight together, though? I'll help you out. I don't have to stop as long as I can use Chappy to get out of my body, do I?" You say in the brief intervals you are not stuffing the awfully delicious omelet into your mouth.

Kimiko's keeping to a slow and graceful eating pace. She talks only after chewing and swallowing one of the tiny portions she put in her mouth.

"You're still a human, Clarissa. It's not really acceptable for you to be getting involved. After our partnership is over, you should go back to your previous life and just ignore the spiritual world. I'll manage just fine once I'm healthy again." She sips her tea.

"...I guess we'll see for sure once the week's over." You tell her, and the girl nods.

It really doesn't seem like she wants to give you any concrete answers, for whatever reason. Maybe another time..?

You go through your dish pretty quickly. It's too light to keep you satisfied. You'd like to have some more, but at the same time, you don't feel like ordering Chappy around. Not that you're afraid of making it feel bad, but... well, it's using your body.

"Oh yeah," You remember. "There was this... old cross that Naoko was talking about. I think that's how she did all that spiritual stuff. It's probably in the shelves, or... no, it's probably in the bathroom. She got undressed there. That's where it probably is."

Kimiko nods and lazily stands up, walking away.

For a short while, you're alone with the unconscious Naoko. You relax. As weird as this situation is, it's all very comfortable. Lying down in a big bed, neatly covered by a blanket, having breakfast in that same bed, and being surrounded by friends (cute girls) lying in that same bed is... not so bad of an experience once you get over the awkwardness of it all.

Before you melt down too much, Kimiko returns, carrying the necklace by its silver chain.

"I have no idea what this is, Clarissa," She declares before you even get to ask. "But the material is very sensitive to spiritual powers... a lot like a Zanpakuto, I'd say. I have no idea what this thing really does, but I know someone who is an expert in these kinds of things. A real scientist of the spiritual, I'd say. I'm sure someone like him would figure it out in no time. Can I have it? I'll ask Naoko if she wakes up before I leave, but, you know... if she doesn't, I'd like to borrow it."

Naoko can't really make that call right now.

>Eh...I'd not be comfortable letting you take it somewhere without her permission, sorry. I think it's quite important to her.

>Tell her to leave the cross here.
Yeah no you don't give away people shit while they're out cold... or at all.
>>
>>38427090
But that just means...

if we never kill clay bone, Aiko will come back wearing white and sporting a new name.
>>
>>38427212
>>Tell her to leave the cross here.

Last memento of her parents. Lets ask her about it when she is better.

>>38427212
>tell her to leave the cross here for now
Wait for Naoko to wake up

>>38427212
>Tell her to leave the cross here.
Yeah
>>
Wait...like a Zanpakuto?

That isn't like Quincy at all...

That's more like...Fullbring.

Fullbring Mimicking Quincy Power?

...this line of thought is too troublesome.

We should be lewd with chappy. We totally have permission, because it's our own body.

You need to test yourself for lewdness disease anon, it's quite an insidious sickness.

"No, leave it be, Kimiko. We're not gonna steal from her while she's down. If you still really want to know, you'll have to ask Naoko."

Kimiko begrudgingly shrugs her shoulders and places the bauble on a wooden chair. She smiles, but she's clearly disappointed.

The doorbell rings.

"That must be the doctor. I'll get him; you get back into your body," Kimiko says. "Are we going back to school after this?"

"I don't know about that." You lean against Chappy. With a slight, forcible push, the spherical pill flies out, phasing through your back, and you return to your real, physical body. You feel a little dizzy, and the restrictions of flesh feel highly uncomfortable; probably because you haven't been back in it for so long. If Chappy wasn't keeping you 'alive' all this time, would your body have started to rot by now? That's a scary thought.

"You don't know? You're not going to be skipping out on school just for this, are you? I'm sure the doctor will take care of everything, and we'll just be accused of skipping on purpose by him, so..." The girl pouts. "I can even call her grandparents so that everything is kept in check here. She's got their number on the same note as the doctor's."

"Why are you so bothered about me not going to school?" You ask her. For a few seconds there, she just stares at you, as if dumbfounded, but then casually flicks her hair as if to proclaim that she's regained her composure, or maybe never lost it to begin with.

"I'm going to school either way, and... if you have any more questions, you can just ask me there..." The girl looks away and meekly adds something after a pause.

"...It wouldn't be fun without you."

The doorbell rings again.

...

>"Well, if you notify her grandparents... I guess I'll go."
>"Nah, I'm staying here. Where did that candy roll off to? I'm swapping out with Chappy again."
>Smirk. "Well, how can I say no when you're begging me like this?"

>"I'll wait and hear what the doctor has to say first."
Seems reasonable to me.
>>
>>38427995
Let's make sure the Doctor isn't crazy. Then we can head off.

The tsun is lethal.

It's the reasonable response.

Waiting for the doc's opinion then going sounds good yeah

>"Well, if you notify her grandparents... I guess I'll go."

You let out a malicious, thin-eyed grin. "Well, how can I say no when you're begging me like this?"

"B-begging?" The girl's face quickly turns bright pink. "I-I'm not begging, I'm just..."

"But I'll listen to what the doc has to say first. If he gives the a-okay, we'll go."

You pick up and put the now pill-shaped Chappy back into its candy dispenser.

"W-well... that's obvious... we're not leaving if he says that she needs constant care, or something..." She continues muttering, trying to sound like she's still calm and composed, though she's quite clearly trying to hide her red face underneath her long hair.

The doorbell rings a couple times more, the neglected visitor's irritation pretty clear. You and Kimiko head to meet him.

>Were you expecting us to give up the cross?
It would be interesting if that happened.
>Why is Kimiko suddenly so dere?
For the same reasons other girls get like that!
>Is the doctor pissed off yet?
He is.

>For the same reasons other girls get like that!
But we hadn't even turned on the swag*!

*Note: Clarissa's swag may be less real than she thinks.

>For the same reasons other girls get like that!
She's intimidated by our domineering presence!
No?
