Stage 64: Angels, Monsters, Sorcerers, and you.

The word alarming, with all it's myriad connotations, is one you use often. You've used it to describe situations, people, magic, locations, problems, emotions, and even in sarcasm. At the moment, the word alarming is not even at the forefront of your mind.

Horrifying, yes, that's a good one.

Terrifying might be better.

Nauseating could work.

But you think that of them all, the word “dumbfounded” works nicely. Or perhaps “outraged.”

And you think that this is going to be a very, very bad night.

Following the instruction of your injured Seer has lead you to the Holy See of Tokyo, where the Catholic Church seems to have engaged Ryuu Wakaba in battle. There are a number of dead bodies, caused by both sides, but at the moment you're concerned by the fact that the Barrier you put up has allowed four young men and women of the church to remain, in addition to the mysterious deacon who works with the Jesuits, a powerful man of God – if not a priest, than a sorcerer perhaps. There is also the dark complected holy warrior, a man of god who fancies himself above the laws of men and land alike, undoubtedly fanatically loyal to the deacon, and carrying a relic in the form of a silver and gold sword. Currently he's using this to prevent Wakaba – and as a side effect, you, Shoko, Yuuhi, and Inau – from approaching the chanting acolytes.

This might not be nearly so bad, if it weren't for how the kami and the youkai use prayers in Japan, a trait which leaves spirit-children in a problematic between place. Still, even that might be salvageable....if your idiot cousin hadn't been practicing his madness inducing powers on Wakaba as well. Now you're trapped between chasing or killing off the Catholics who have been tormenting the local populations of nogitsune-born spirit children and cat youkai, and trying to draw Ryuu Wakaba far enough away from them that they'll stop trying to exorcise her.

Because all they're doing right now is giving her prayers which will unbalance her already unbalanced soul, and turn her into a monster – and she was already psychotic to begin with.

To her credit, Inau-san takes out two of the assistants with arrows – one in the shoulder, the other in a thigh – ad their cries of anguish and pain are a welcome break in the soft Latin prayers. Your Danger-Seeing-Right-Eye can see the prayers wafting to Wakaba, still, but only a third as much. The Deacon is the real threat there, but you told Inau to concentrate on the acolytes. On the plus side, is Shoko-san is on the fae side of Wakaba, opposite you and diagonal to the priests. Yuuhi-chan is a short distance from you, staying close, her sword still sheathed.

Of course, now you're looking like some overpowered dragon-goddess in semi-human form, with red and blue fire surrounding your hands, lighting up your body, and in your mouth, and a massive, lashing tail, not to mention black sapphire horns that resemble coral or chipped branches. Needless to say the Deacon and the Jesuit are almost as threatened by you as they are by Wakaba. Almost, because it's pretty obvious to you – if not to them – that their prayers are having an effect on the stone dragonette, which encourages them to redouble their efforts.

Kamidamned morons.

[] Declare yourself and tell everyone to cease their activities at once.
[] Take out Wakaba A.S.A.P. - dangerous.
[] Wash and blow away the idiot priests and acolytes and concentrate on calming Wakaba down.
[] Warn the priests that they're tampering with powers they don't understand!
[] Have Yuuhi take out the Jesuit and you rake out the Deacon, while Shoko tries to....reason with Wakaba as a neutral third party.

You leap into the air, the Barrier allowing you command over Water and Wind you do not normally possess, and shout down at the Catholics in a booming voice that makes the lightning in your throat flicker threateningly. “In the name of Amaterasu-Omikami, Ryujin-Owatatsumi, and Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado, cease and desist your heathen prayers!” You make a point of not calling on the power of Horobi, of course, using strictly your own, arguably augmented abilities. But it does sound incredibly impressive.

The minor hurricane you conjure IS impressive, and batters and flings the quartet of acolytes off towards the buildings, soaked and chilled to the bone, and less likely to bleed to death. You use the very powers that blast them away to cushion their falls and prevent broken bones or torn flesh; you're not here to kill the dupes, even if they're part of the problem.

Unfortunately, the Jesuit stands up in front of the Deacon and holds the sword up like a cross, both hands wrapped about the blade, close to the hilt. In the barrier, you can actually see the glow of the power it projects – a tower of gleaming white light that surrounds him and the Deacon, preventing your powers from striking at them directly. There attention is now fully focused upon you, though, which is better than you could have asked.

Shoko-san is calling out softly to the blood-soaked Stone dragonette, who is leaning heavily on her sword and chuckling softly, muttering things you're not able to hear. Yuuhi-chan has moved up, her sheathed sword held up and out, ready to move on your command. Inau-san remains hidden, but you can see the line of destructive power her arrow creates, aimed at the Jesuit's right bicep. Yuuhi, interestingly enough, is her own little golden shadow of destructive potential, self contained and concentrated.

You wonder what you'd look like in a mirror, because you've never seen anyone you fought look the way she does in a Barrier.

The Deacon – Monsignor Julian, you presume, Father Cristobal Harris' superior – slowly tugs his jacket into place, and adjusts his stole slightly, his dark grey eyes looking up at you coldly.

“You haven't the foggiest idea of what you're dealing with. I had hoped Father Harris would have told you how dangerous your exorcisms are to my kind. Or any of the hundred spirit-children of Japan. Killing youkai with your exorcisms is one thing, but we're not youkai, and we're certainly not possessed.” You looks down at him with your glowing, mismatched eyes, and clench your hands slowly. Dressed as Sun Jian, you can't help but imagine you look really freakin' impressive at the moment.

The deacon or monsignor speaks in a slow, deep voice. “Father Harris is a novice, for all his training, and easily led astray by the words of a pretty young woman. I take it that you are Ryuu Ryukusa?”

“I am. You must be Monsignor Julian.” you spare a quick glance at Shoko and Wakaba; Shoko is looking worried, but she has her gloves on and is speaking quietly and calmly. Wakaba is standing without support, but her sword is still unsheathed, and she's swaying slightly. Yuuhi-chan and the other fellow are staring daggers at one another, but the dark skinned man doesn't relinquish his hold on the blade one bit. Inau-chan's aim is steady and true, even with the adjustments she makes for his movements.

[+] Thus far, you have been adrift in the sheltered harbor of my patience....

You lash your tail slowly, standing on air a dozen feet above the churned and blood-soaked grass. “That being the case, I am here to see you off. By which I mean you, your bodyguard, and any of your acolyte you brought to Japan are leaving tonight. You're fortunate I got here in time to make sure you leave alive. If I'd had the slightest inkling you'd be foolish enough to try an exorcism on a dragonette, I would have come personally.” You're giving Wakaba the benefit of the doubt here – she might have been psychotic, but she wasn't stupid and she wouldn't have wanted to disappoint Oba-san by starting another religious war on Japanese soil.

He frowns....well, he frowns more, you don't think the man is capable of smiling. You open your clenched hands and the radiance that spills from them intensifies. “While I have been told you were here to minister to the spiritual well being of Kumatori Kiki, an idiot would see that you clearly have an agenda here. And I'm the furthest thing from an idiot – the cat youkai, the nogitsune-children you've been harassing, and now this? I'm kind of thinking you need to give me something of an explanation.” He draws himself up, and the dark skinned Jesuit goes to one knee, planting just the barest tip of the sword into the ground.

You narrow your eyes and the lightning in your throat intensifies, the power in your hands doing so as well. Huh, this must be what Kiku-chan feels like when she's annoyed. “You've been indiscreet, and you've been testing my patience. My goodwill is gone now, and you had better start talking.” He lowers his head and takes a deep breath, taking something out of his pocket.

A bible.

“Before you do something extraordinarily foolish, not to mention dangerous, I am going to warn you once more: I am born of dragon and human. I'm not a demon, any more than Ryuu Wakaba, Yuuhi, or Shoko are. Your prayers feed the parts of us that aren't human, which disrupts the balances of our souls. As a spiritual authority of Japan, on my father's side, I'm telling you this: the only thing your exorcisms can do to us is drive us mad and turn us from people into ~real~ monsters.” There, a flicker in the ward. You're getting through to the – ah, fuck.

Monsignor Julian lays his hand on his companions shoulder, and the ward burns more brightly. “Steady, Father Boohr.” Turning his attention to you, he speaks up. “My sacred duty is to give aide and succor where it is needed. The child needs my help. Without it she will surely fall to temptation. Only though the Grace of god can she be redeemed.”

You stare at him as he holds up the small book, the leather old and dusty, the gilt edges of the pages shining in the strange light you throw off. “Did you just not hear anything I said? You do speak Japanese....should I switch to English?” You loom down. “Yuuhi-chan, did I not make everything plain?”

“No ma'am!” she pipes up, not one iota of her attention wavering from the Jesuit priest and his holy sword. “Makes perfect sense!”

Using your sense of water to locate Shoko-san and Wakaba-san allows you to seem like all your attention is on the monsignor. They're still where they were, but you can sense....things are weird inside Wakaba's body. Her blood is....off, it's wrong. You can't tell what's wrong with it, only that it's something unnatural and probably painful. Still, she hasn't tried to kill Shoko yet.

“Right, so which child? Kumatori Kiki, or Ryuu Wakaba? Because, I'm pretty sure that if what you did to Wakaba is any indication of what you plan on doing to Kiki, my job description puts me squarely in the way of that ever happening.”

He looks at you, his eyes cold and hard. “Yes, I know.” The ward flashes and there is a bright white flash of lightning, and the entire barrier is lit by a soft, white radiance emanating from the pile of feathers....no, the trio of winged....no, the three sets of wings that slowly unfold from around a strangely beautiful young woman who stands before the monsignor and his Jesuit.

[XXX] Patience, patience. You can get through this too. You're smarter than he thinks.
[X] ….right, time for Hidesato-san to pay her debt to you.

Your first thought is that you've fallen for a trap. They tricked you and you fell for it like an idiot.

But that's not true – he couldn't have known you'd send Wakaba, and he certainly didn't expect you to come with backup. It was a contingency, that's all. You didn't fall for a trap, not really. It was just something he'd prepared, and you forced him to use it and on your terms, no less. It doesn't seem to have much in the way of an intellect either; there's a....a ~dullness~ to its gaze, an expectant poise to its body as it kneels before them. Then there's the ward – the protection that the Jesuit is creating isn't just to protect them from you – it's clearly also now protecting them from the angel.

Now, why would they need protection from an angel?

Looking down at the angel, you frown faintly. Yuuhi is surprised, but calm, and her strange golden aura doesn't change, though she is now focused on the angel. It must be her Mind-Like-The-Moon technique, that Zen-like awareness that lets her react instantly to an attack or to attack in an instant in any way that is most appropriate, unprepared. Shoko seems to be all right – she's sitting cross legged and drinking, while talking to Wakaba, who is shaking and unsteady, but no worse off than she was last you checked on her. That's worth some prayers, for sure.

Turning your full attention on the monsignor, you frown. “Really? That's your answer?” He frowns mightily but you shake your head and undo the pins and knotwork, letting it all free, waves upon waves of....well, white, which you hate, but oh well. They float and twist in the wind, and you spread your arms. Yuuhi-chan takes the hint immediately and starts to retreat, while Shoko stands up and starts trying to coax Wakaba away from the battlefield. “You must not have been paying attention when I mentioned who sent me here, Monsignor Julian. While Japan certainly has seen fit to allow your god to live here, your god is just one of many kami....and I am here on the behalf of them all, as directed by Amaterasu-Omikami.”

The shadows cast by the radiance of the angel start to move, to pool and coalesce just ahead of you, on the ground. The sleeping demigoddess Hidesato rises from the pit of darkness and you clap you hands twice – which makes the angel recoil, and causes the barrier the Jesuit is maintaining to waver, which is extremely interesting. “Hidesato! I call on you to repay you debt to Kushinada, to me, and to do so in the service of Amaterasu-Omikami, Ryujin-Owatatsumi, and Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado! Rise from the darkness and take your place in the light of redemption!”

Hidesato's eyes open, and she stands in place, uncurling from her fetal pose and settling on the ground before you. “With this act, my debt to you is cleared, Ryuu Ryukusa, and we are free of one another.” The priest clutches the bible, and trembles, and the Jesuit looks back at his senior, confused as to why he hasn't ordered the angel to attack.

[x] You owe a heavy debt still....but you will have paid the one you owe me.
>>

Let's add that the angel is not the only thing we are worried about, in case things with Wakaba go sideways. They will.
>>
>>38516542
[] You owe a heavy debt still....but you will have paid the one you owe me.
[] Amaterasu-Omikami as my witness, Hidesato-san.
>>
[X] You owe a heavy debt still....but you will have paid the one you owe me.
[] You will obey, Hidesato. You have no choice.
[] Defeat the angel, and we'll discuss it then.
[X] Amaterasu-Omikami as my witness, Hidesato-san.
[+] But we'll discuss this later, babe.

“With Amaterasu-Omikami as my witness, Hidesato, you still owe a great debt....” She narrows her eyes, but doesn't strain at the power you hold over her. At least, not yet. Which is good because you weren't finished. “....but the debt you own me will have been paid in full. That doesn't let you off the hook – we'll be talking after this is over.”

She pulls her swords from ~Nowhere~ and belts them on, as the angle rises, her own sword a strangely simple sort of weapon. Then Hidesato pulls a naginata out of ~Nowhere~ and takes up a stance against the angel, which hesitates still.

“Last chance to talk this over, Monsignor Julian. You're treading on very thin ice, and if you fall in, your kami may not choose to pull you free.” He lifts the book and says something in Latin, directed at the angel. The book pulses with white light and the angel sweeps her....wings? Her wings seems to made up of her hair almost. She sweeps them to meet you in mid-air – only to be forced to the ground by Hidesato's naginata crashing down on her sword, the creature nearly falling on its back and staring at the demigod in shock.
>>
>>38517258
The demigod holds out her hand in a gesture of warning, her naginata swept back and down in her other arm. “In the name of the Kami, in the name of Ryuu Ryukusa, in the name of Amaterasu-Omikami, you shall not pass.” Hidesato's black handled spear flashes and she drives the creature back, forcing it towards the protective ward that the Jesuit is generating. You can barely, just barely see it wavering....perhaps Father Harris isn't the only one who is unsure. Did you see incorrectly? Is it the older priest who is above the laws of man, and this is his dupe?

[] Time to bring down that ward and see why they're worried about the angel.
[] Let Hidesato take on the angel, and talk some sense into the two idiots.
[] Help Hidesato – she doesn't really deserve it, but....

[+] Maybe help out.

You're about as much of a theologian as you are a sorceress, which is to say not much of one at all. But there are alls sorts of small, odd things going on here that don't really point towards this being entirely religious power. Tiny i8ncongruities, little bits of strangeness that don't quite make sense.

You open your Water eyes and take a look at what you can really see.

Hidesato and the angel are duking it out off to one side, while Shoko is still trying to coax the recalcitrant Wakaba away from the fight. Shoko is scared, and worried, and worse, she's trying to avoid troubling you with what she thinks could be a serious problem but isn't serious enough to warrant interrupting a potential death fight. Hidesato, true to her nature, is fighting with all her might, and she's doing a very good job against what LOOKS like an angel, but isn't. What it is is a young Japanese woman trapped in some kind of spectral shell. The woman is unconscious, her power the fuel for the apparition. Hidesato seems to be deliberately NOT striking killing blows. She is a sorceress herself, after all, so that makes perfect sense; she's buying you time and keeping the Angel out of your hair, as promised.

And then there's “Monsignor Julian” and his Jesuit Boohr. Your water eyes can't pierce the ward, which is not possible. Water Eyes and Stone Eyes are passive – they're Yin powers, not active Yang powers. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to see through that ward, especially if it's simply a faith-based barrier. You would be able to see the faith of the man sustaining the barrier, his conviction and strength of purpose....but you're not getting anything from the monsignor or the Jesuit. Not even a hint. That means it's not a spiritual ward of any kind – it's a magical barrier.
>>
>>38518196
The fight that preceded your arrival was violent and short – and it consisted of about half of Wakaba's people turning on her and some of her companions. The fight was short and brutal, and almost entirely one sided; Wakaba and her people slaughtered the enemy, and then turned on the humans. Possession? Again, nothing religious about humans possessing spirit-children.

But it could be done with sorcery.

Turning your attention on the duo behind the white tower of light, you sweep down to the edge of it. “I think it's time we drop....Excuse me.” You feel the swords moving through the air before you hear or see them, and you sweep the gold plated pins that held your hair up and knock two aside, while you simply block the other with your left hand, the steel shattering into fragments against your invulnerable palm. You don't bother with the other one, as it was never going to hit you – or anyone past you, which is a trick you use all to often to be fooled by it.

The quartet of acolytes – or should you say, ~apprentices~ ? – stare at you in shock as you destroy their conjured and magically thrown weaponry. You turn your right hand over and flick the two metal hairpins and sink them into the two unwounded humans, piercing an arm and a leg, opposite those Inau wounded on their companions.

That has the interesting effect of causing the shield to waver for a few seconds as the Jesuit is distracted, despite the reassuring hand on his shoulder. One undoubtedly feeding him power, if you've guessed right.

[] “Time to drop this charade, Monsignor Julian – I know what you are.”
[] Walk through the barrier – if it's what you think it is, it won't stop you at all.
[] Have Inau-san drop the Jesuit and with him the barrier – non-lethal will be her choice, naturally.
[] Father Boohr....he's the weakest link. Turn him to the Shinto side.
[] Reach in with your left arm and grab Monsignor Julian, then drag him out.

He's not a priest. He's a sorcerer, pretending to be a priest. Odds are he's using the actual priests as a dupe and a blind.

Didn't XS said we might meet another devil-child?

Also, how do we convince Boohr ?

>"I can see your faith is sincere. But this man -and all the ones he takes orders from- have lied to you. There is nothing holy in his powers, nor in his mind. [XXX] Father Boohr....he's the weakest link. Turn him to the Shinto side.
[XX] “Time to drop this charade, Monsignor Julian – I know what you are.”
[X] Walk through the barrier – if it's what you think it is, it won't stop you at all.

You turn your attention back to Father Julian, who is concentrating on the sword and the power that it grants him. He seems earnestly convinced that his faith is what is powering it. But you sincerely doubt you could have shaken his faith by demonstrating your dart throwing skills. His attention, on the other hand, you shook that fairly well. Which means it's not a holy sword – it's a talisman, a magical device. His concentration is what is powering it, and as long as he concentrates, the ward remains intact.

“I take it you two haven't been in Japan all that long, have you?” Father Julian looks up at you, his gaze steely now. He hasn't understood the ramification of the presence of the acolytes inside your Barrier. “Here's a little bit of religious history for you. When the first spirits married humans and had children, their children were troubled, because they did not fit into the human world, or the spirit world. So the Kami made a place just for them – a place between the spirit world and the real world, where they could tap into their full power. But because their power was based on their spiritual nature, that meant that faith had an impact on them.”
>>
>>38519024
So, they're turning spirit children into something similar to nephilum? Also, we really need to focus on Wakaba soon.

I think they're just shitting around not understanding the ramifications of their actions

Oh boy, this is going to be sweet

but yes, we need to go talk on Wakaba soon. I'm impressed by Shoko, I must say.

>>

I'm not impressed because I don't understand what she can do. But being able to keep Wakaba stable this long probably says it all.
>>
>>38519024
Father Julian looks doubtful, but his concentration isn't wavering yet. “You see, Father Julian, all spirit-children are by birth religious. Our very existence is based on the Shinto and Koshinto faiths. Without it we wouldn't even exist, because one half of our family wouldn't exist either.” You pull some stray hair from your face, and smile at him. “That means that any power of faith has an effect on most of us. That's why you had to come out here to deal with the dragonette and her minions – she couldn't enter the church safely or easily.” Not entirely true – because the Christian god has a representation among the Kami, Shinto being what it is, she could enter and it would have just been a little weird for her. But the next thing is completely true.

“As a result, if this ward is based on faith, then I wouldn't be able to walk through it.” You step through the ward, and it vanishes with a sharp crack and the scent of ozone. “I am granted immunity to actual magic though, thanks to gifts from my family.” Monsignor Julian's eyes grow wide, and Father Boohr looks at him, things clicking inside his head as he realizes what's been going on for a long time, you suspect. “It's fortunate the angel didn't attack me – it would have dissolved instantly.” You hope, anyways. “I am kind of wondering about the Japanese girl trapped inside of it....tell me, Julian, did she try and combat your sorcery with her own and lose? Or did you need a convenient sacrifice, and found a powerful, untrained psychic to use as the core of your 'angel'?”
>>
>>38519427
“I don't blame Father Boohr – he's a righteous man, but sometimes we are blinded by our faith.” Father Boohr drops the sword, and looks positively ill. “I think it's time you dropped the pretense, 'Monsignor' Julian.” The Deacon's fear is strong, and the spells that he used to keep you from using Water Eyes on him have been broken – no doubt because you have Matagama-no-Shitoki on. The 'priest' takes a step back and clutches the tiny book, which you are certain isn't a bible, and starts murmuring in Latin. You feel the angel turn it's attention on you....

Water eyes shows you that you were correct. Monsignor Julian is a sorcerer, and you've just thrown a box of wrenches in his plans, along with a heavy sprinkling of anvils. Father Boohr is shocked, and dismayed, largely because he's been operating under the delusion that the things he's been doing were not only church sanctioned but done with the power of God and the auspices of faith. To find out that you've been influenced by a sorcerer using your faith as shield for his activities.... His heart isn't broken though – his faith is strong enough to take that hit, and he knows he'll have to atone for his misdeeds. Julian isn't going to go down without a fight though, your Water Eyes show it. But with only four acolytes, he's doomed.

You give up a long, drawn out, resigned sigh. “Why don't you people ever listen to me?!”

>To be Continued....

No, because you would have needed to seen him in action in order to discover what he was doing. Both sorcery and spiritualism can destroy youkai and harm nogitsune-born spirit-children, but the methods by which it is done are different. Only by seeing his power in use could Ryukusa determine it wasn't spiritualism but sorcery.

>>38519571
Psychic phenomena are a natural phenomena in Ryukuza's world, not a supernatural one. Humans can have access to them, including but not limited to foresight, clairvoyance, spirit-seeing, and precognition, even telepathy. Part of Er Yin's powers are psychic in nature as opposed to supernatural. Telekinesis is usually the result of ghosts or youkai, not psychic powers. Psychics are often taken into temples or under the auspices of a seer or fortuneteller and trained so they don't attract ghosts or youkai.

Psychic energy is delicious to youkai.

>>38519575
These acolytes seem to be in on it - conjuring and throwing swords isn't exactly 'the power of faith'.

Hidesato seems to think so, given that she hasn't killed the girl in question - though that may be Ryukusa's Barrier Power over her, and not her choice. then again, Hidesato hasn't actually harmed innocents, only kidnapped and threatened them (no, Kushinada doesn't count as innocent).
