The year is 2089, and on the surface, this world seems just the same as ours. If you look more closely though, you will find psychics, mages, mythological monsters and more, all hidden from the general populace.
You are an agent of the Order of the Magus Hunters, the organisation keeping this secret from the rest of the world. They are troubleshooters, police, military and assassins all in one, and all so that the world can be safe.

Welcome to the very first thread of Magus Hunter Quest. For now, we’ll be doing character creation, and unless we get further than I expect us to I won’t be asking for any rolls just yet. I’ll be asking about some tidbits of backstory in between story posts, and I’ll ask to vote on them in the story-post votes. That way I can get a better image of what the MC is going to be like, while not bogging down the quest itself with extra votes.

The options are a guideline, not an absolute, which is why I will always include a Write in option. I may occasionally forget to add it but feel free to do so anyway. Some options I list are good, some are bad, most won’t be really awesome. I leave it up to you to find ways to do that.
Also feel free to ask things if they’re not entirely clear. I reserve the right to dodge the issue if it’s done for plot reasons, but otherwise I’ll gladly provide more information.
>>
It’s just a routine type A mission, but you can’t help feeling nervous. It’s your last one under the command of a Vindicator Primus, and after this you’ll be promoted to be one yourself. You try to focus on the job. No way you’re going to screw this one up.

You mentally go over the intel again. Single mother, son of 10 who is awakening. That’s pretty young, but not exceptional enough to raise any eyebrows. Middle class, father died two years ago in a car crash, nothing else of note. The mother is named Kate Upton, maiden name Devlin, and the kid is called Isaac. They live in a small apartment block in downtown, on the second floor.

You are…

>Ringing the front door. You’ll be doing the talking and convincing this kid to join the Order.(role: Face: social specialist)
>Standing next to the Face, trying to look just the right mix of threatening and non-threatening. If anything goes wrong you’ll be the first to jump into the fight and protect the Face. (role: Bruiser: melee/antimagic specialist)
>Covering the back exit. If the target escapes you’ll be the one to take him down and make sure he doesn’t get away. (role: Soldier: combat specialist)
>Sitting on the roof of a nearby apartment building with clear view of the home’s living room through your rifle’s scope. (Role: Sniper: long range support specialist)
>Standing in the hall near their front door. You’re not sure why you’re even on a routine and low-risk mission like this, but apparently the Arbitrator thought your “special skills” were needed. (role: Caster: psionics/magic specialst)

>This choice will have a large effect on your starting stats. there will be an additional vote on what magic/psionics you have even if you’re not a caster.

You are Michael Weston, 25 years old, and psychic caster specialist of the Order of the Magus hunters, Vindex branch.

You’re standing in the hall near their front door. You’re not sure why you’re even on a routine and low-risk mission like this, but apparently the Arbitrator thought your “special skills” were needed. Over your coms you hear Blister, the face and Vindicator Primus ring the door. There’s a short talk between him and the mother. The usual talk of being a special task force, filled with just enough secrecy to allow them to talk to the kid but not enough to make them too suspicious.

Blister and his thug, as you call him, move into the house, and they move to the living room. Ed on the other building confirms to have visual, and Garland is tucked away near the back. You wonder if perhaps they sent you on an easy mission so you’re guaranteed to be successful here. That’s got to be i-

A loud bang coming from inside the house interrupts your train of thoughts, and you jump up, heading towards the apartment door.

“Damn it, it was some kind of flash bang, don’t let them get away!” you hear Blister yell in the com.

At that precise moment, the door ahead of you bursts from its hinges, and you see the woman from the file you got run through, her 10 year old kid clinging to her side. The next moment, they’re gone. They jumped from the second story. You get to the railing as fast as you can, just in time to see her hit the floor and keep running, leaving behind a bit of a crater.

Low risk eh?

You’re the only one on this side of the building, and your targets are getting away. Luckily, it’s not very crowded, so you can make ample use of your gifts.
>>
>>38632211
>1. Jump after them. It’s pretty high, but you can probably make it without too much trouble.
>2. Climb down as fast as you can. Even if she can make jumps like that, she doesn’t seem to be going much faster than the average housewife.
>3. Try to stop them with your psionics. (what type of psionics you have is in next post’s vote)
>4. Write in (I know it’s a bit early to have a decent idea of what’s possible, but if you guys come up with something I deem plausible, I’ll let you know)

What is your main focus of psionics:
>Telepathy (manipulation of mind)
>Telekinesis (manipulation of matter)
>Pyrokinesis (manipulation of energy)

And you can pick one of the same list to have a minor ability in.

I actually had quite a bit more for this, but you'll be able to get them throughout the quest if I find my notes again or if I come up with more. This kind of thing is a bit harder to come up with on the spot. Still, these areas are pretty broad, so there's plenty of area to expand

First background question:
Your parents are…
>Dead. As a child you were the only survivor of a magical attack so you were taken in by the Order. You don’t remember much of them but you have a memento of them (you can specify what, or I’ll just come up with something myself)
>High ranking members of the Order. They keep putting pressure on you to perform well and you’ve got a suspicion that they’re accelerating your rise through the ranks, despite you asking them to stay out of it.
>Ordinary civilians. They have no idea what magic and psionics are and believe you were recruited into some sort of special police force.
>Mysteriously absent. You never knew them, and the Order refuses to tell you anything about them.

They can run as much as they want. You focus on the mother’s feet as you start drawing on the familiar energy of your mind. It’s not that hard. Just a small tug and she trips, landing badly, but making sure the kid doesn’t get too hurt. In the mean time, you’ve started climbing down carefully, and when you get to the street level the mother has gotten up. You yank her closer with your mind, but you feel an energy conflicting with yours confirming your suspicions. She’s a wild magus. Slipped through the mazes of the net and lucky enough to survive through her awakening on her own. She can be dangerous.

Your pull unbalances her enough for you to close most of the distance, but as you get to her, you feel an aggressive intent from her just in time to dodge the inhumanly fast blow. Looks like she’s into Blessing magic, pumping up her own body beyond its physical limitations. It’s one of the safer schools of magic for a wild magus to learn, as it tends to be less unstable and… explosive.

As you back off a bit, her intent is clear. She thinks she took care of your teammates for long enough to beat you down and get away. Granted, she is faster and stronger than you are when it comes to close quarters combat, but she probably hasn’t got any training, and your powers more than make up for any of her magic.

>1. Overpower her with your telekinesis. Push her to the ground and overwhelm her magical energy.
>2. Rely on your telepathy to read her movements and stay out of the way. Your team will be here any second now.
>3. Surprise her. You’ve dodged a few of her attacks. Counterattack with your fists with a bit of telekinetic help.
>4. Write in.

This is the most impressive 4-way tie I've ever seen. 2 people want to overpower her, 2 want to rely on telepathy and stall her, 2 want to surprise her and 2 want to diplomance, with some votes wanting to do two of them in various orders.

Also, High ranking Order parents are the obvious win.
>>
>>38632840
"As you back off a bit, her intent is clear. She thinks she took care of your teammates for long enough to beat you down and get away."

She wants to fight, we need to convince her that she's out of her league
>>

She’s strong and fast, but she doesn’t seem to be much more than a cornered animal. A mother with a child she thinks is threatened. You might be able to smooth things over.

“Wait, this hasn’t got to go this way.” You manage to tell her in between dodging a few of her blows. They’re sloppy and would probably be easily countered if you put some effort in, but you think you can manage this. You don’t have Blister’s “natural charm” with people he hasn’t been in a room with for over 5 minutes, but you can always try.

“We’re here to help you. There’s a safe place for both you and Isaac. There’s a whole world of wonders out there, but it’s dangerous without proper guidance.” You think it’s beginning to sink in as her movements become slightly less erratic and the look in her eyes calms down a bit. You press on, she’s not entirely there yet. “He’s awakening. Think back to your own awakening. You probably felt alone, frightened. Faced with a power no one around you understood, and one you had difficulty controlling. “

Your com blares to life in your ear. “Good going, hold her where she is, we’re almost there.” Blister tells you.

Kate Upton, mother of one, seems to be slowly coming to her senses. She’s stopped attacking you, but she’s warily looking at you, not sure whether you’re lying or not.

“I know you people. I’ve seen you before, taking kids away.” She, for a lack of better word, growls at you.

“It’s to protect them. You might not have the most volatile powers, but I’ve seen scenes of children who couldn’t hold it in, and… It wasn’t pretty.”
>>
>>38633522
>Were always top of class. You drove yourself to train and study as hard as possible, though you didn’t really have many friends.
>>
As you finish your sentence, you suddenly hear your com again. “Good, take the shot.”

Before you can do anything, you hear the sound of a flying bullet and the woman suddenly slumps to the floor. The only evidence of the shot being her sweater slowly turning red. The kid is huddling against a wall, scared and confused, not knowing what’s happening.

“Good job there Weston. real teamwork keeping her there long enough for Ed to relocate.” You hear the mockery in his voice. “Catching a wild magus sure is a lot more prestigious than picking up a kid for your last assignment as a Vindicator, eh?”

He's still our superior, but we're on the fast-track to management, where we can make his life fucking Hell.
Don't torpedo our chance to be HIS manager.

Kid can't see enough of the scene to know she got shot, only that she just fell down. He doesn't even see the blood.

2 isn't passive-aggressive at all, it actually agrees with our superior that taking the shot was the good option.

Ok then just make sure to cover the kids eyes at least. I think everyone can agree on that.

I can understand that, but I think it's more of a chargen thing. You're thinking too deeply into this friend. It's all about choosing archetypes and going from there.
>>
>>38634010
If there is even an opportunity. I think the kid will be shipped off to some institution dealing with raising mutants.
But I think it would make sense if we feel responsible for the kid after this incident, even if it was not our call that took his parent down.

These are correct. It's mostly for getting down the nature of the character for now, also one of the reason's I'm not making you roll for your actions yet.

But yeah, consensus is clear, Blister's a dick but let's not call him that just yet. Writing.

In the mean time...
Top of class wins the vote. Next up:

Your mentor was…
>Kel of house Inara, a vampire. He pushed you to the extreme of your abilities and kept a very professional distance in all official interactions.
>Elly Jordan, a warm motherly figure. She never ceased to try and encourage and motivate you when things were going badly.
>Edward Eddington, an older mage. No matter how hard you tried he was always disappointed in your performance and derided you for slacking off while you did your best.
>>
>>38634084
Except that you need to think of the intention behind the action.
2 approves of the shooting, and Weston's character will change to reflect that.
If you wanted to be dishonest, then you should have picked 4, because options 1, 2, and 3 are all honest representations of Weston's character.

“Thank you… Sir.” You manage to say, managing to keep back all the insults and urges to fry his brain. You’re sure he can hear the bitterness in your voice, but he’s probably done it specifically to spite you. The worst thing is that he didn’t actually break any of the rules. You’ll have to find other ways of getting back at him. The best thing about becoming a Primus now is that you’ll have your own team to manage, and won’t be shunted around the teams anymore on the basis of needing your skills. You won’t have to follow this prick’s orders any more.

The kid. You refocus and quickly head towards Isaac, still huddling against the wall, shivering. You send out some soothing feelings towards him, trying to calm him down as you hear Blister call for a cleanup crew. At least he’s not within earshot of the kid yet as he does so. Having him hear Blister talk about his mother as “trash that needs up cleaning” wouldn’t exactly open him up to the Order’s teachings.

“Hey there Isaac. I’m Michael. I know you’re scared and confused, but I’m here to help you.” You purposefully position yourself between him and his mother’s body. “Some bad things happened, but I’ll try to help you as much as I can.”

It takes some time, and a lot of keeping him away from Blister to calm Isaac down, but you’ve managed to relocate him to your van before the cleanup crew arrives. The drive to HQ is a quiet one, though you’re fairly sure Blister and his thug will be laughing about this behind your back for a while, the sick fucks.
>>
>>38634608

When you arrive at London HQ, a nondescript office building in the middle of other nondescript office buildings, you exit and the kid is immediately taken away by the attendants standing ready. Isaac just seems to stare at nothing as they bring him away, though as he disappears through the door, you think you catch him looking back at you. But you might have imagined that.

“Come on, prize-boy, let’s go grab your medal of valour and promotion to major general” Blister slaps you on the shoulder, faking camaraderie. You stay silent as you hear in a bit more detail of what happened in the living room from Garland, while trying to ignore Blister’s comments. As Blister was doing his smooth routine, the mother seemed to have thrown an apple on the table which exploded in a flash of light, a sort of magical flash bang. Even Ed got blinded by it at that distance, and by the time Garland got into the room she was already at street level.

The debriefing is short and sec. Blister keeps his dick attitude for dealing with his underlings and targets, and to the Arbitrator he comes across as the epitome of professionalism. The way he tells it seems to indicate that while you did act on your own accord to chase her down, you were actually under his orders to keep her busy for Ed to line up the shot.

>1. Interrupt the debriefing, tell your side of the story.
>2. Let him get away with it. They’ll be more likely to accept his version anyway, and he technically did nothing wrong.

You sit out the debriefing quietly. Blister’s Arbitrator doesn’t seem to know him all that well and doesn’t see through his professional facade. A few questions later and the Arbitrator dismisses all of you. As you exit, a few officers including your mother, right hand woman of the Vindex Primus himself await you. In front of them, Blister doesn’t dare poke fun at you and he and his crew leaves quietly.

Your mother stats to talk, but you interrupt her. “Wait a second, I have something I want to discuss with Blister’s Arbitrator first.” You realise you don’t even know his name. You never really took the time to learn any of the Arbitrator’s names as you were passed along through so many of them. Such is the life of a Caster specialist. Your mother frowns at you for a moment, but gives a short nod and you head back into the briefing room.

The Arbitrator is still busy packing his files and doesn’t notice you until you make a polite cough. “Ah yes, Michael Weston, isn’t it? I hear you’re being promoted now?” Damn it, does all of HQ have to know this? “Yes sir. But actually, I wanted to talk to you about something else.”

You quickly outline your version of the facts, stating that you had successfully talked the mother down and would have been willing to come peacefully. From your point of view, he wasted a potential asset and maybe permanently damaged the child.

“That sounds preposterous!” He says indignantly. “Vindicator Primus Stewart is a fine young man, he’d never do something like that.”

“I’d like to believe that sir, but if you would check the post mortem when it’s available you’ll see that the shot was much too clean for her to have still been hostile. She stood still and was listening to what I was saying, and a little bit more and she’d have surrendered.”
>>
“Hmpf. We’ll see.” He doesn’t seem to be convinced, but he’s starting to doubt Blister. The post mortem should win him over once he sees it, but you don’t think you can push him much further. You thank him for his time and leave the room, back to the hall where your mother is waiting.

“Well, ready for your big day?” Her mouth is twirling slightly upwards at the ends. She’s being a lot warmer than usual it seems. No barking orders so far.

“Yes mo- Ma’am.” You manage to catch yourself in time. She’d strangle you if you called her mother in front of other officers.

“Good. Follow us then.” She turns around, and so does the rest of her entourage. You’re not entirely sure where you’re heading. You thought it’d just be in one of the briefing rooms, but apparently not, you’re on a higher floor than those now.

You stay quiet for the entire trip to… Wherever your going. You didn’t even think the building was this long. You’ve been walking for a solid five minutes now. A dimensional expansion enchantment perhaps? You’ll try to figure that out later.

Eventually, you reach a set of doors after a long walk in a long corridor with nothing else. You wonder if every Vindicator Primus goes through this or if it’s just because of your parents. As the doors open of themselves, probably by means of magic, you’re more or less shoved to the front of the group and you walk into the room at the head of your little procession. the room itself is small. Perhaps ten square meters, not much more. In the middle, an old man is sitting in lotus position. From the looks of it, he’d be at least 80, but you’ve learnt not to make too wild guesses in this organisation. You once insulted someone over a hundred years old that looked like he was barely fifteen.

You halt before the little elderly man, and the rest of the group does so too. After about a minute of uncomfortable silence, the man suddenly jerks his head up, as if only noticing you now. You can’t see whether his eyes are open or not through the enormous caterpillar eyebrows. “Oh yes, yes. You’re here. Good, gooooooood.”

You hear a silent sigh of relief from one of the other officers behind you as the man starts to speak. “Well Then.” The old man looks up at you, and suddenly there’s a tablet in his hands. You didn’t even blink, and it was just there in his hands as he’d always been holding it. He makes some gestures in front of it, and he’s holding it open enough fro you to see a stream of data appear on the screen. Then, turns into a literal stream, as space and light seem to bend around the tablet and what can only be described as a river of data flows into the man’s eyes, nose and ears.

“Hmm, yes. Michael Weston. 25. major telekinetic talent, minor telepathic talent. Current rank Vindicator, caster specialist. Parents Assistant Vindex Macy Gilligan and Grand Scholar Ian Weston. Mentored by… Oooh, Edward Eddington of House Eddington.” He smiles, at that name, but you’re not sure what to make of it. You’re not entirely sure how you feel about that man either. On one hand, he was fair, but on the other, he pushed you harder than your parents did, and the moment you made a mistake he made you feel as if you had personally nuked New York. Your mind snaps back to attention, but the old man continues to drone about your life and both it’s ups and downs.

Eventually, he stops. You can’t say you really know what the last thing he said was, it feels as if you’ve been standing here for over an hour. “And now we come to this.” He says. “You have a remarkable track record young man. I have heard from my subordinates that the reports do not do you justice, though I feel some of those sentiments might have been exaggerated.” At that he throws a glance slightly to your right, and you can’t help but look over your shoulder for a moment, where you see your mother turning a slight shade of crimson.

Huh, you’ve never seen that before. You’re beginning to get a firm idea of who this guy actually is.

“But I have seen what you have done now, and I must agree that it is time for you to rise above your peers, and give you opportunity some of them may never have.” He pauses to catch a breath.

“By the power invested in me, and in name of the Cerebrum, the Vindex and the Oculus, I, Arch Magus Sam Pennywhistle, now promote you to the rank of Vindicator Primus.”

So…. That’s a thing.

He stares at you as if expecting you to say something.

His name is a bit of a touchy subject to him.

>What is my assignment?
>>
Thank you, Arch Magus. What is my assignment” You reply. Were it not for the freaky magic he did earlier, you’d have been severely underwhelmed to know that this little man is your Arch Magus.

“These people can handle all of that.” You wait for a follow up, but he makes a motion as if shooing you out of the room. “ Well then, off you go. Spit spot. I’ve got other things to do. ”

He returns to his previous position and you leave the room. You’re actually dragged out of it a bit by your mother when you’re apparently not as fast as she and the other officers would have liked. Once outside, all of the officers, even your mother, let out a sigh.

“Well, we survived that one with our honour intact, didn’t we?” Says one of the larger men.

“Speak for yourself Francis”, retorts your mother, still slightly red in her face. She coughs and directs herself to you. “Well, Vindicator Primus, “ and she makes sure to put the emphasis on that last part, her own way of saying that you owe her and should be grateful and that she will expect even better from you from now on, “Let us handle the details of your assignment.

You’re lead back to the main part of the headquarters, and as they lead you somewhere you try to spot any hint of other corridors going in the direction of the Arch Magus’ room, but you can’t find any. Your mother and the officers lead you to a mission control room. One of the small ones, for an Arbitrator and some of the agents of the Oculus to provide real time information and orders to the field teams. There’s already a woman in the room.

“Francis, I’ll leave this one to you, I’ve got my duties to return to.” Your mother tells the bigger man from earlier. “Yes ma’am.” he replies and turns to you.
>>
“Well young man, you’ve got quite the interesting career ahead of you. First, let me introduce you to Lilliana Hecate, “ he gestures to the woman standing in front of you. “She will be your Arbitrator from now on.”

Arbitrator Lilliana Hecate extends her hand to you and smiles slightly. She looks sturdy. Muscled, short brown hair, somewhere in her early 40s if she’s human, you’d guess. A scar at her temple seems to confirm she spent some time in the field. At least you won’t be stuck with an officer who doesn’t know how things actually work out there. “Pleased to meet you.” She says in a warm voice.

You shake her hand, and as you do Francis takes the word again. You can’t help but wonder what his rank is, since you haven’t actually been introduced to him. “I’ll leave you two to it then.” He nods at Lilliana and she nods back at him before turning back to you.

“Very well. Let’s start at the beginning then. You’ll be stationed in some of the more distant areas of the outskirts of London. Now before you protest and want to get a cushy job here in central HQ, this means you’ll get some more privileges too. For one, you’ll have much more responsibility than most Vindicator Primusses, since you’ll be living in the area and can’t always rely on my help if things happen. Higher responsibility means of course better chance at promotion, since I’ve heard you’re one of those types. You’ve also got a fairly large budget for gear and vehicles, and this I think is one of the best, you get to pick your own team.

>1. One of those types? What do you mean?
>2. Very well. What’s next?
>3. I can’t help but notice the scar. were you been in the field for long?

“By the way, I've noticed I tend to drag on my posts a bit and make 2-post monstrosities over a longer period of time, which kind of reduces player activity. From experience, I don't think it's as bad in action scenes as in this kind of situations, but if you'd prefer me to make them a bit shorter, please tell.

"What sorts of equipment and vehicles can I be expecting to have access to? Also, I get to pick my own team? What sort of details will I be given on potential members? Just speciality, or will there be any information on strengths, weaknesses, personality, that sort of stuff?"

Thankfully for most social situations, you can say multiple things after each other.
>>
“One of those types?” You ask, trying not to sound indignant. “What do you mean?”

“One of those guys that only cares about promotion. You just want this job over with and grab some more power. I heard how fast you went through some courses.” She seems like she’s going to continue but you cut in.

“It’s… Not like that ma’am.” You say.

“Oh is that so?” She raises an eyebrow. “Well explain yourself then Vindicator Primus Weston.”

“It’s my parents.” You give her the quick rundown. Both of your parents are highly placed, your mother in the Vindex (though you’re surprised she didn’t know that considering everyone else seemed to know about you), and your father being one of the Cerebrum’s top scholars. Both of them, though especially your mother, have been pushing you throughout your entire career in the Order, and a few things happened a bit too opportunely to you for them to be accidents, despite them claiming no involvement.

“Ah.” She says. She seems a bit taken aback. “Sorry about that then. I’ve just seen too many young hotshots trying to make a name for themselves.”

“It’s ok ma’am. Anyway, what’s next?”

“Well, you’ll be picking your team now.” She hands you a tablet with a list of people, always a few of each traditional role of the Vindicator teams. “You’re even allowed to pick another caster aside from yourself since you’ll be fairly isolated from most of us.”

>Aaaaaand that’s where I’ll be ending things for tonight. I need a bit more preparation to get the party roster in order, and I should be going to bed anyway now.

>I’m hoping I can make this a twice-per-week thing with Wednesdays and Saturdays, but I’m really busy IRL so I might have to skip one or the other every now and then. I’ll try to get next thread this Saturday but I have to get up early next morning so I’ll probably only be able to run for 4 hours or so. I can start earlier, in the afternoon for me as a eurofag, if people so desire.

I hope you enjoyed yourself, I certainly did. Archiving now.
