>>
The few times I was lucky enough to meet him, he was a complete dick, and the many interviews I've read with people who knew him well (eg Neil Gaiman) have sort of verified that he was basically a ball of rage and anger. There was a heartbreaking realisation that his early books are about anger at the system (Equal Rites, Small Gods, even Night Watch), and after the alzheimer's diagnosis the books started being about the protagonists raging against their own flaws (Thud, etc).

He's not really been writing his best since the Alzheimers either, much like Abnett and the epilepsy.

But none of this in any way changes that the Fantasy world is now just a little worse off than it was yesterday.

RIP Sir Terry

A see a lot of people mourning Sir Terry in remembrance of the joy his works brought him, and lamenting the loss of so many who shaped our childhoods.

I challenge you, /tg/, to be the ones who shape the dreams of the next generation. We might be losing our childhood greats, but we owe it to them to try, however futile our efforts might be, to provide stories and tales even a tenth as great as theirs to the future.

So mourn, as we all must, but take heart. The turtle moves, and so do we. Get out there and start making magic.

She's actually made some pretty strong public statements about that, saying she wants to protect her fathers legacy, even from herself.

She's pledged to never write a cheap cash in or try to do so just to ride on her fathers coat tails. She's doing a pretty damn solid job as a writer for games, and I hope one day the inspiration strikes her that she decides a followup really would work.

Rhi Pratchett is a great woman though, my thoughts are with her as well after losing her father.

Terry Pratchett was an inspriation to my creative processes, and his books were what I graduated to for audiobooks when I was old enough. I always fell asleep listening to tales of Vime's sardonic heroism, or Rincewind unintentionally saving the world yet again.

It was formative to my childhood in a lot of ways.

I still remember my mother reading me the first three chapters of Soul Music, and that was my introduction to the series.

So yeah, going to miss this man. I hope his Daughter, if she picks up the series, retires his old characters and starts fresh with new ones. The last book they wrote together would be perfect for as a transitional book, a passing on of the torch. Rather than writing about the same old characters and getting them subtly wrong, better that she take the world, and move forward with it. Just mho.

That care and attention would be great, but I think it would not be the right style.
Same for Ghibli.
You remember the old Asterix animated movies? They hit the style and humour of the comics perfectly, and at least the german voice acting was great.
Something in that direction would fit Discworld rather well, I think.
>>
I recently found nearly the entire set of Discworld novels at a used book store. A kid had died, and his parents had finally gotten around to selling off some of his stuff. They were missing the two most recent books, and a couple of the older ones, but that's it. There are a couple of duplicates, as well.

So I bought them, even though they were more expensive than their condition warranted. This kid must have read them all a hundred times. Some have little notes in the front, "Merry Christmas," or "Happy Birthday," stuff like that. Anyway, the lady at the book store was telling me this story as she was ringing them up, and I mentioned that part of the reason I wanted the whole collection was that Pratchett was going to die soon, and I wanted to read all of his books when he did.

So anyway, now I must track down The Colour of Magic. And figure out who has one of my copies of Good Omens.... But I can't think of a much better way to spend my weeks off. Here's to you, kid, and to you, Sir Terry.

I think Terry Pratchet would prefer us to find it, then put it back. And make sure that finding it was part of the adventure. Go out of our way to make sure other people take part in the journey rather than just putting up the location for any dick to find.

It's a quest. Anybody can take it up, anybody can find it, but finding it is the point, not the actual sword.

I'd love to see Rhianna Pratchett make a new Discworld game.

Perhaps Kickstarted for the initial funding, so they don't have to kowtow to studio executives etc. Find a studio with the right passion and a really strong idea for a true Discworld Story that can be enhanced by making it interactive.

Perhaps going full Telltale Games with it, perhaps doing something more interesting. I'd love to see a game in the style of Dishonoured/Assassins Creed before it got shit set in Ankh Morpork, playing a junior member of the Assassins Guild mixing social and societal intrigue with stealth, exploration and the occasional inhumaning.

This is affecting me a lot more than I expected it to.
We knew it was coming-And we know he wanted to go out before Alzheimers took away the memories of his loved ones from him.
"Now, however, I live in hope - hope that before the disease in my brain finally wipes it clean, I can jump before I am pushed and drag my evil Nemesis to its doom, like Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty locked in combat as they go over the waterfall.
In any case, such thinking bestows a wonderful feeling of power; the enemy might win but it won't triumph."
And yet this is still tearing me up inside. His books seriously influenced a large portion of my world view, I think.
Just remember:
"No one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away, until the clock wound up winds down, until the wine she made has finished its ferment, until the crop they planted is harvested. The span of someone’s life is only the core of their actual existence."-Reaper Man

Not much hope there.

I really REALLY like his daughter's stuff, and she was the primary driving force behind Raising Steam, but the writing style is different enough, and the characterizations different enough that she needs to move the torch along. Not rehash the same characters, but let them age and pass on with their original maker.

That's the best send off for Diskworld I think. Letting it age and evolve with each new author. The characters retiring with the author and the characters' childrens' stories being told by the new author.

I could see something turn based ish made from the unholy union of Hand of Fate, Darkest Dungeon and Fallen London/Echo Bazaar. You're thrown in Ankh-Morpork, your shit is stolen with just a receipt left behind and you're told to work it out.
Cue storytelling and plot, characters coming out of the woodwork to assist or impede as you pick yourself up and build yourself up in the big wahoonie. Eventually a faction might take interest, you might need to take a jaunt over to Quirm for one reason or another... Things happen at random times, or not at all so you have to adapt on the fly. Can't predict life.
Might go a talkative, persuasive merchant who dabbles in Alchemical nonsense, a quiet but surprisingly well connected Assassin scholarship student thanks to certain surprising people who owe you favours from your days in the street, or maybe a Guard Sergeant with a talent for noticing the hidden and unobvious.

Fuck. Now I know what I want in this game and I know it can never be.

It's also one of the few major discworld books with such large timeskips, IIRC. Also there's no clear, compelling antagonist (although Making Money suffered from that as well).
>>
>>38650623
Yup. Chaos wins, the entire world is utterly destroyed and consumed (and this was AFTER an entire moon dropped down onto the planet earlier), everyone still on the planet dies, and the Chaos Gods don't even revel in it, immediately get bored, and turn away.

It's like they said "FUCK IT IT'S DEAD, GOODBYE, SUCKS TO BE YOU FOR SPENDING MONEY ON OUR GAME"

"OH AND IF YOU STILL WANT TO PLAY IT KNOW THAT ARMY RESTRICTIONS NO LONGER EXIST BECAUSE FUCK YOU"

He's been suffering from Alzheimers and his daughter did the lion's share of the work there I think. I can't be sure.

I like it on it's own merits, but as part of the series you're right. I'd forgive everything except the characterization (I mean seriously, the dwarf thing was not that divergent), but the weirdness of vimes and vetenari was just... ugh... I dunno.

I think she needs to time skip forward like, 14-20 years. Take on the roles of the children of the current generation you know?

You know what's weird?

The first thing I thought when I saw this was that it wasn't real. The second thing, when I realized that it was, was how strange these 4chan death notices are, how you can't feel anything but a sort of muted indeterminate something, and then it passes and you mostly forget about it. The third thing, was realizing I was crying a little, and I actually felt really bad.

I never met him, or really knew him, but there's so much I'd never have done if it weren't for Terry. There's so many ideas I'd never have considered, or things I'd never have thought to investigate. I'd definitely never have gotten into writing. My life wouldn't be the same.

I hope he was happy, I guess. I don't know what else to say.

Vimes is the epitome of LG
Vetinari shows how characters that on the face of it are evil (he is the tyrant, after all) can be so much more.
Tiffany and the witches are perfect examples of how female protagonists should be done.
The wizards show how spellcasters don't have to be these all-powerful, wise beings.

The list goes on.

>Can't be bribed, he once arrested the Patrician, not der sharpest knife in the drawer but honest like anyt'ing and he don't stop diggin'.

He did not believe in any god, but he looked at religion as a fundamentally human endeavor in which we search for truth with minds that evolved to tell where the ripe fruit is. Religion, to him, was occasionally corrupt, possibly dangerously so, but he also criticized those who hate it with the vigor of a fundamentalist.

>>38652746
Huh, so it is.
>>
>>38649495
Neil Gaiman just told about Terry being pissed at himself for fucking up that one radio interview they had togheter and people take it out of context.
>>
>>38652654
It runs the gamut. There's people who are geniuenly good and decent people who are VERY religious, and then there's people who use it as a cudgel against the gullible or truly faithful. Kinda like real life.

The two serious 'religious' books would be Small Gods, Carpe Jugulum, and to a lesser degree, Monstrous Regiment.
>>
>>38652916
If you actually read that article, you would know that the article is about Pterry being pissed at all the bullshit in the world and the crappy hand he was dealt by Fate (that cheating bastard), and chanelling that anger into something productive and great, not just an anecdote on two brits being late.
>>
>>38652803
I forgot about that thing entirely.

My dad just went on hospices care and now this. I just...

Some of Terry's footnotes are astounding
>>
>>38653051
Thanks for telling me that.
>>
>>38653121
I most certainly agree.

You seem to be implying something here, but what I suspect your implication is, is mistaken.

I am a simple person, it ain't wise for me to attract the attention of the gods, so I'll just say this:

"If any ground is consecrate, this ground is. If any day is holy, it is this day."

My assertion that Terry Pratchett's footnotes, though not as long as hers, his are much, much better, earning him the title of God of Footnotes.
>>
>>38653106
It's okay dude. Things will work out in the end. They always do.

>>38653150
No problem. A lot of people give flack to Terry Pratchet's work for being 'areligious' or even straight up 'antitheist' but a good portion of his stuff is basically "how things ACTUALLY work, in reality, doesn't fucking matter. What matters is what people -believe-."

I challenge anybody to read Small Gods and Carpe Jugulum, look at Brutha and The Quite Reverend Mightily-Praiseworthy-Are-Ye-Who-Exalteth-Om Oats (Reverend Mightly Oats) and tell me he was some sort of fucking new atheist fedora fag.
>>
>>38653231
He DID wear a fedora, though.
>>
>>38653204
I just realized this was paraphrased in Silver Surfer:Requiem.
>>
>>38653231
I will keep that in mind.
>>
>>38653062
Re-read it and you're right, I completely misremembered.
>>
>>38653217
That's what I suspected. And I disagree. TP makes jokes in his footnotes, sometimes good ones. SC makes *worlds* inside hers, things of wonder and beauty - and *also* jokes, sometimes good ones. Now is not the most appropriate time to start a pissing contest. But as far as deifying Pratchett, there are areas of the pantheon that rightly belong to him, and others that don't.
>>
>>38653279
He wore a fedora long before these annoying garden-variety, shitty neoatheists could read.
>>
>>38653348
>>38653279
Plus it's not a fedora.
>>
>>38653348
Oh well if he's a hipster too that's alright then.
>>
>>38653389
It's a fedora according to wikipedia. An oversized one, maybe, but still a fedora.
>>
>>38653389
>Pratchett was well known for his penchant for wearing large, black fedora hats, as seen on the inside back covers of most of his books.

At least according to WIkipedia.

>>38653389
>>38653413
I have the impression I'm being subtly trolled.

>"how things ACTUALLY work, in reality, doesn't fucking matter. What matters is what people -believe-."
And how they act, and how these actions are affected by their beliefs, and how objectively false beliefs can enable and encourage positive action.

I fully agree. I also think that, even setting Brutha aside, the antagonist of Small Gods and the hinky stuff that was going on in Omnia can't really be considered antitheistic. Part of the point of all that stuff was that it wasn't because of Om, that his religion had become a habit or an empty tradition rather than something people actually believed in. That's criticism against organized religion but not in the "religion is evil" kind of way. It was more about pointing out that religion can easily come to be about things other than faith.

Well, at least he went before the Buggerance took him over. Better to die now and sane than at 100 years old and unable to remember your own name.

I found a perfect memorial poem on Reddit about this, and if any of you want to be faggots about the source, then you can kindly stuff it so far up your ass it comes out of your nose, then shove it back up your ass and repeat ad nauseam.

>The sun goes down upon the Ankh,
>And slowly, softly fades -
>Across the Drum; the Royal Bank;
>The River-Gate; the Shades.

>A stony circle's closed to elves;
>And here, where lines are blurred,
>Between the stacks of books on shelves,
>A quiet 'Ook' is heard.

>A copper steps the city-street
>On paths he's often passed;
>The final march; the final beat;
>The time to rest at last.

>He gives his badge a final shine,
>And sadly shakes his head -
>While Granny lies beneath a sign
>That says: 'I aten't dead.'

>The Luggage shifts in sleep and dreams;
>It's now. The time's at hand.
>For where it's always night, it seems,
>A timer clears of sand.

>And so it is that Death arrives,
>When all the time has gone...
>But dreams endure, and hope survives,
>And Discworld carries on.
>>
>>38653051
There's also Nation. Which, while not a Discworld book, is my personal pick for the best thing he ever wrote.

Not an oversized Fedora.

Everyone gets this wrong.

Fedoras are BIG.

What the new atheist edgy fags wear is called a -trilby-. It's how you can doubly tell that the person wearing it is a jackass, by not only ruining an entire kind of otherwise nice hat, but doing it while not even fucking WEARING that hat.
>>
>>38653279
>>38653348

He wore it because he went bald REALLY young and didn't bother to properly shave off the sides, it's was literally a "don't look at my bald head" covering, and back then the only people who wore hats were geology professors.

>>38653545

Though the best thing he ever did was when he was on a convention panel with Stephanie Meyer and Meyer went into ann rice style crazy author territory while talking about how her characters seemed so alive and how she routinely found she couldn't write scenes how she wanted because the characters wouldn't like that.

And this went on for 5 minutes of her prattling on, and Pterry next to her was slowly leaning away from her.
Then she finishes and turns to Pterry and says "I'm sure you've experienced the same thing."

And Pterry just fixes her with this look and says simply:

"No, because they're fictional creations." and then points to someone else in the audience who'd had their hand up to ask their question.
