The strange alien creature convulses in your pod and your newly adapted parasite digs into it. Your pod arrives in the system the ship was heading to, and you can recognize several of the distant signals of ships. Your pod has arrived just before the Scavenger ship and you watch as it slows back down bellow the light barrier. It quickly moves past your cloaked pod and joins the rest of the scouting fleet within the system, and your pod slowly follows.

The system of the blue giant is largely unappealing for settlement. On the distant outskirts is a faint and low density belt of frozen gas and rock, while inward is a low mass, "puffy" gas giant that holds a small group of rings made of gases and trace amounts of water ice. The gas giant is surrounded by ships of varying shapes and sizes, all of them feeding on the giant like animals over carrion. The ship you had fought with docks with one of the larger craft, which looks more akin to a station with thrusters, and armatures reach out and begin to repair the heavy damage across its hull.

You can see other craft coming and going as well, other scouting skimming over the various nearby star systems in search of resources. You are unaware of how it functions, but now that you know what to look for you can spot the moment the Scavenger ships activate their drive, as it seems to jerk ever so slightly. The Flicker Drive, your new guest recalls, seems to actually be rather similar in function to your own blink drive, but while your drive permits long range jumps with a short charge time, theirs seems to... adjust the position of the ship, effectively teleporting it in space, but by only a Planck's length at a time. While the ship itself seems to functionally be moving at a steady pace, it is actually not in motion at all, but simply undergoing billions of teleportations per second.

It likely formed closer to the star when it was younger, and was blasted out here as the start destabilized. The planet itself is small in appearance, but with a powerful gravitational pull. Mountains of diamond shimmer in the dim red light, frozen in still tidal waves and motionless ripples like a frozen ocean.

Further inward there is a small planet a moderate distance from the star, with a hint of an atmosphere. You detect no life, however, or any means for it to develop, with no detected liquid water, no geothermic activity, and what little there is of the atmosphere is mostly toxic chemicals.

Further in still is a charred husk. A burnt rock scorched black. Signs of long lost liquid water rivers trace across the surface, with traces of a rich atmosphere found in the form of wind swept deserts and mountains. The planet was likely once a rich and fertile world, until the sun expanded and blasted away its atmosphere, boiling the seas and scorching the soil. Even your drones would be unable to survive for long on the planet, and it shows no signs of resources in any bountiful form.

We know the scavengers use pheremones as a major form of communications, this biologically works through having receptors designed to bind and transport these molecules to the inside of the body and then they are converted to whatever the message it is significant for. Lyle looks over it curiously. "So what's the occasion? I thought we were running an investigation, not starting a coupe."

I'm much more reluctant for diplomacy with the Union, given their oppressive track record with alien species and the damn nuclear satellite still in orbit of our homeworld.

Once again, I was anti murder because we can use memories, skills, and identities of these people to our advantage. It is already a poor district, but your hybrids quickly manage to find the dirt beneath the grime, searching through old drain pipes and squatter towns lodged beneath overpasses. Near a drainage canal you find a large pipe leading into a maintenance corridor. The area is filled with rain water and the sound of distant taidarens fills the air with sharp whistles. Eventually the area opens up to a large overflow tank. You find a series of connectors and corridors nearby that seem to lead to a protein recycling plant, one of many scattered across the planet dedicated to recycling water and breaking down food, trash, waste, and even bodies into compost for export to the farmland outside the city.

The canals seem to all feed into or out of a single set of connectors that leads to the plant itself, sealed waste pipes lead up to the processors above, and various waterfalls of drain water flows down, carried off to a more dedicated water treatment plant, or to just be dumped into a river.

The plant itself is mostly automated. The surface appears as a factory of moderate size, with areas dedicated to different forms of waste disposal. Trucks bring in compost and waste food from nearby sorting facilities and restaurants from across the district, while occasional shipments from local hospitals and mortuaries arrive on occasion to dispose of bodies, organs, and other biological waste. Pipes from below bring up sewage and other waste to the filters in the basement level where your hybrids stand, a large cylindrical tank of crisscrossing catwalks, pipes, and waterfalls. High above the filtration tanks hum loudly, swishing about with sludge and condensed nutrients waiting to be shipped off to some farm in the country.
