Well, my head hurts. But I'm awake, already ate dinner, and don't want to be late for once.

_________________________________________________

Your name is Alice Zief, Ars Magus technician, and looking out from the second floor of Jubei's house with Tsubaki in your lap, it strikes you for the first time just how dim the Kaka village looks. Even on the lowest level of Kagutsuchi proper, some sunlight would have filtered in by now. But here beneath, the bottom of the arcology blocks out nearly all natural light, casting the city in an endless night without even any stars.

But the Kaka have simply dealt with the cards they've been handed. The village is well lit by thousands of lanterns and streetlights, casting the city in the constant warm glow of twilight.

Pretty as it is, you know the Kaka also love natural sunlight and their top reason for visiting the hierarchical city is to take a nap in the sun.

Still, something about the twilight city is familiar to you. The nostalgic orange dimness speaks to something that rests very deep within your lost memories. Not the buildings, the location or the people. The light. The ambient glow of a thousand lanterns casting a brilliant warmth under a starless sky.

"Miss Zief?" Asks your adorable ward, golden orbs looking up at your own as she leans back onto your chest, flannel pajamas rubbing against your skin.

"Why don't you wear any clothes to bed?"

You amend 'precocious' to 'adorable'.

The first honest answer that pops into your head is that you don't actually own any clothes. The second is the realization that even if you did, you'd probably go to bed naked anyway.

"It's more comfortable this way." You state with a shrug.

Looking down at her own sleeves, Tsubaki gives them a considering look, before giving her own shrug and leaning back against you. You end up just sitting with her cuddled against your chest for quite awhile, just looking out on the Kaka village and relaxing.

Still, you can't sit here all day.

You promised to let Tsubaki help you cook today.

When you remind her about this, she scuttles back to her own room to get dressed for the day. She's been wearing Kaka clothes loaned from the village, and they fit her just fine, but maybe you should look into getting her some more normal clothes? Something that she can say is strictly her own, rather than a loan from a Kaka?

A quick Ars gets your own clothes in order, and you head down to the kitchen to start pulling out ingredients. Eggs, milk, flour, butter, some sugar, baking powder and salt... And that's everything.

About all that's left is to decide whether or not to get some chocolate chips out too.

Well... Technically an intervention, as far as I know (It's hardly explained) is only supposed to re-run the event until the desired effect occurs, and the power required is based on the probability of the event occurring.
Also take into account that dimensional interference is a thing, so the rules of this dimension don't necessarily apply.
Hypothetically, the Logic in another dimension could make pancakes in our dimension taste perfect, even if the method that works in that dimension would fail horribly in ours.
The issue is finding a dimension whose interference/crossing over doesn't destroy ours, which is what the Sankishin and Takamagahara are for.
tl;dr- It's magic. I ain't gotta explain shit.
>>
>>38821425
Well, that's my impression of how it worked based on how Shaderic explained it.
The way I understood it, we take something in the scene he didn't describe in much detail (how good the ingredients are, how much heat we used to cook, etc.) Observe it's current state and, if possible we can make an intervention (the ingredients are now the best money can buy, the batter was mixed just right, we used exactly as much heat as necessary).

While debating the merits of chocolate, you give the fridge one more pass over. And what else you do you sitting neatly in the corner, but a tiny carton of buttermilk.

You pull it out just in time for Tsubaki to step into the kitchen, clad in a Kaka coat and jeans. You give her a warm smile, and get ready for some breakfast.

Tsubaki looks so cute when she's taking things seriously. Sitting on top of the counter with her tongue sticking out a little while she stirs up the batter, giant wooden spoon gripped tightly. She's just so focused, it's adorable!

When it comes time to fry up the pancakes, you pull a chair over to the stove so she can stand next to you and see what's going on. You can't actually let her fry them herself, but she can still pour the batter onto the griddle, and she's proud and happy that she can help that you can't help but melt inside when she gives you that satisfied smile.

You can't say no to that face.

You just can't, it's a physical impossibility. Your heart would stop.

And the way the pancakes turned out was, unsurprisingly, perfect. Fluffiness, sweetness, overall flavor and taste, all these were no less then an 'A' rank. And given that Tsubaki had never had pancakes before, you got to see her try them for the first time, too! You ended up taking pictures of her face while it was sticky with syrup and giggling madly at her embarrassed expression.

Still, you can't spend the entire dare going on about how cute Tsubaki is.

Very close.

An Intervention doesn't actually change the properties of anything though, so you couldn't make low quality ingredients into better ones.

But you could alter the chain of events, so using the correct amount of heat or altering how the batter was mixed are both possible.

Makes sense, it's interfering with Probability and the Uncertainty Principle instead of Time.

>But you could alter the chain of events, so using the correct amount of heat or altering how the batter was mixed are both possible.
Now, this brings up an important question. Let's say this dude from Sector Seven wants to shoot us with a pistol and we want to Intervene and make him fail.

Can we do it by, say, making the gun jam because something got stuck in the mechanism?

The other way is to make the bullet misfire due to something in it, like wet cordite or it having too little gunpowder to fire properly.
The first one would likely be impossible without ot having rained recently so we can say he had the "bad luck" to get one of his bullets wet.
The second requires him to have "randomly" received a badly made bullet.

Which way Is more in line with how Intervention works?

That's a little complicated. Honestly, the easier thing to do is just have him miss outright.

But mis-fire or a jam is pretty easy to do as well. A slight mis-alignment between pieces, the gun not having cleaned for awhile and getting gummed up, those are simple. Affecting the ammo would be a little harder, but would likely be more about taking advantage of existing damage (water, corrosion, mishandling in general).

First things first.

Your debt with the Kaka has been mostly cleared up over the course of the week, and you have a place to live thanks to Jubei. But you don't actually have any income.

And you need money for cute clothes to put Tsubaki in food, and other expenses.

The ongoing lack of an identity makes this a little difficult for high end places, especially since you don't really have a lot of references (Jubei's a nice old cat, but you can't imagine people would take much a bipedal feline says seriously, and Professor Kokonoe doesn't seem like the kind of person you reference on an application) you're mostly restricted to things on the lower half of Kagutsuchi.

Still, thanks to the Elder you have an in with a couple of places at least.

That is, theoretically, a possibility. However, you've just sort of not-actually kidnapped someone. Avoiding official attention, at least until you're sure that they're not looking for Tsubaki is something that seems like a good idea.

Kimihiro's Curios was a small shop, tucked away in the back alleys of the Orient district. It was a place that should've been cramped and dark, a literal hole in the wall kind of establishment.

Your first hint that perhaps the shop was a little out of the ordinary was the yard. Green and neatly trimmed, the grass was picture perfect. And in the backyard, a larger tree than there should have been ground space for towered over the house.

And wasn't that also a surprise, an actual house. Not a continuation of the crammed together buildings, but a two story affair with an architectural style you'd put down as an eccentric mix between eastern and western.

And there, sitting on porch, a young man with mismatched eyes watched you step past the black fence, and have you hardly more attention than one would give a bird passing overhead.

He took a long draw on the pipe, held it for a second, the breathed out a long plume of pale smoke.

"Is there something I can help you with?" He drawled, tone so very bored you could build a house out of it.

For now, you decide to take the polite approach. You do want to get a job here, after all.

"Excuse me, Sir? Are you the owner of this store?" You give him a nice smile in concert with the question.

His response is to spend another long minute puffing away at his pipe, before giving you an answer.

"No." A brief pause, and his eyes seem to focus on you for the first time, appraising you. "But I am the shop-keeper." He flows like liquid up from his reclined position, until he's sitting up straight. "Akikaka sent you, didn't she?" You blink at the unfamiliar name. He catches your confused expression, and smirks. "Ah, that would be the Elder to you, wouldn't it? She so very rarely uses her own name anymore." He tsks to himself, a lazier version of the smirk playing across his face. "You wouldn't know it these days, but back then, she was quite the adventurous little kitten." His eyes take on a very distant, very old cast, adding decades to his young face.

"Ah, but there's time enough for reminiscence another day." He glided to his feet, smoothly moving from one position to another, before opening the sliding door with a subtle flick of the wrist. "You're a technician, right?" He indicated a small box on the table. Looking at it, it's clear that it's an ars magus of some kind, but it's very small and surprisingly intricate looking.

It's also, to judge by how one side has a metal slug buried in it, broken.

"Fix this, and then we'll talk."

And with that, he just slid out of the room beyond another set of doors before you could get another word in.

Still, it seems you're at the practical bit of the interview. This should be simple.

But what is the box, anyway?

It's hellishly complicated.

Technically speaking, nothing about the box is too complicated. The circuits aren't too complex or too small, and the capacitors are only a small step above in what you'd find in a child's toy.

But they are jammed together very tightly, and with the one side crumpled by a bullet, that throws the entire housing out of whack. Careful soldering and wiggling eventually opens up enough theoretical space for all the parts, but whoever put them inside in the first place must've been some kind of origami master. On top of all that, there's a calculated way that the pieces are supposed to go together, or else when one piece warms up in regular operation it'll cook another.

It's simultaneously very interesting and incredibly frustrating. It's borderline a work of art, but having to jimmy it back together is the opposite of fun.

And, of course, there's nothing you can do about the lost or corrupted data.

You could repair the damage and put everything back where it was supposed to go, but that bullet shattered the memory. And without any memory, well...

What's a transmitter like this good for, if it doesn't know what it's supposed to be transmitting too? The whole affair is essentially a portable command center, capable of transmitting incredibly complex commands, on top of the inbuilt holographic communication arrays. It's an amazing piece of technology.

And one that had to have cost a pretty penny to commission. You can't imagine /any/ company mass producing this. Too expensive, too much craftsmanship.

A super-remote, with nothing to control.
>>
>>38823463

Still, you get it back in working order in a couple of hours. A feat that has your new boss very surprised.

And, to judge by the fat stack of bills he gave you, surprisingly thankful.

He smiled then, turning the tiny cube over in his hands as he explained that while a discreet trader like himself rarely felt the need for a dedicated technician, occasionally he came into possession of rarer and more delicate pieces of equipment that requited a far more skilled touch.

So, basically you get paid on commission. But it's a a hell of a commission.

Money issues handled for awhile, you contemplate what to do next.

Well, now that you have a valid form of income, there's only one thing to do.

A little mental arithmetic figures out a budget for food and other bills, and sets that aside.

The rest of the money... is for shopping!

When you pick up Tsubaki from the village, she doesn't quite know what to make of your enthusiasm. This whole week has likely been incredibly strange to her, between splitting her lessons with the kittens of the Kaka clan and spending more time outside then she ever had before. Even the pancakes had been new to her.

Your own head might be like swiss cheese, but at the very least you'd had the freedom and opportunity to do what you wanted to. And now, hopefully Tsubaki will too.

Your name is Tsubaki.

It used to be 'Tsubaki Yayoi', but since you ran way with Miss Zief you can't call yourself that anymore.

Miss Zief still worries about that. She felt like she kidnapped you, since she was taking you away from where you were supposed to be. If in that house is where you were supposed to be though, why was it always so cold there? You were scared of your own father, your own sibling were constantly ill or dying, and your 'mother' is probably celebrating that you're no longer there to block her own children from becoming the heir.

As far as you're concerned, she can have it.

You've found something better.

You've only known Miss Zief for a week, but you've learned more from her then you have any of your tutors. She's taught you about pancakes, about cuddling in the morning, about hugs and warmth. You felt safer here in the Kaka village, a place barely above the Seithr line, then you ever did in your family's estate, near the top of the Hierarchical City.

She's offered you the chance to change your eyes and hair back, to have your own colors in the mirror again.

But you told her no.

That disguise Ars was her first gift to you. The opportunity to be someone else, to stop being 'Tsubaki Yayoi' and just be 'Tsubaki'.

Although, maybe one day you'll call yourself 'Tsubaki Zief'.

Maybe.

In the meantime, Miss Zief has another dress for you to try on.

They're all really cute, and each one is kind of surprising in that you can walk or run or do whatever you could need to in them. It's a big change from the robes of the Duodecim and your old kimono. Even the Kaka coats floppy sleeves have given you a little trouble before, but these short sleeves are all pretty comfortable and easy to use your arms in.

Although, it's not just dresses she gets you. Pants, strange short sleeved shirts without any buttons or zippers, shorts, sandals, two different kinds of shoes, and more since you stopped keeping track of what all she was getting you.

Of course, Miss Zief is still getting something for herself. It's a narrow black dress that seems to hug her body, but at the same time lets her move however she wants. That might be because her dress cuts off right above her knees, though.

Eventually, Miss Zief calls an end to the trip. Either that or the store ran out of clothes. It felt an awful lot like she was looked through everything.

After that, you went back to the village. Your own bag of clothes was really heavy, but as soon as she noticed you struggling with it, Miss Zief picked it up out of your arms and started levitating it like she was doing with the other ones. You'd kind of wanted to handle it by yourself, but you suppose this is fine. That bag was really heavy, after all. You could have gotten it home all by yourself, but it probably would've worn you out a lot.

And since once you get home though it'll be time for training, you're going to want all the energy you can get.

Miss Zief is an Ars Magus technician.

She introduces herself like that to everyone she meets, but that doesn't really make it clear. Saying she's an expert at it doesn't really either.

Miss Zief is a genius.

She doesn't show it off much, but when it comes to Ars Magus, she's kinda scary. Of course, that might be because you don't know much about them.

You'd thought you were smart before.

Then Miss Zief put broken lantern on the table and asked if you could figure out what was wrong with it. You'd thought it was the broken glass at first. After you said that, Miss Zief pulled the glass away and explained that the illuminator core was where the light came from and that the filament was fine.

The problem was with the circuit that the ars was printed on. Since it was a cheap one, it'd been destroyed in a freak Kaka-impact.

You were going to learn to replace it.

And, eventually, you did. Even if it took an hour and a little shock from accidental discharge.

Then Miss Zief put a different lantern on the table, and started explaining how that one was broken.

You hadn't even known there were that many different kind of light generating Ars, let alone that each ars magus could be broken in different ways.

It's tough, confusing, and makes you appreciate the fact that Miss Zief could probably fix anything that broke in the entire city.

Eventually though, the lesson draws to a close.

It's time to help make dinner.

Spaghetti.

According to Miss Zief, it's actually pretty easy. The sauce is usually more trouble, but we have a pre-made jar, so all we have to is fry up some meat.

Unfortunately, I can't do much to help this time besides stir the spaghetti noodles since Miss Zief doesn't think it's safe for me to fry things yet.

Cooking is wrapped up soon though, and we sit around the table.

My first time with spaghetti is a little... weird. The noodles all seem way too long and they tangle on my fork, so I always end up scooping more then I want. And the meat sauce is piling in the middle of my plate instead of staying on the spaghetti.

And eating the whole mess is actually a lot of fun.

Miss Zief giggles a bit when end I spilling some sauce, and leans over the table to wipe it up with a napkin. I'm a little embarrassed about it, but I can't help but laugh back at her when she just keeps slurping up an ultra long piece for what feels like an entire minute.

I eat my fill at the table, and Miss Zief ends up eating the rest of the spaghetti. I can't help but wonder where she puts it all, but I suppose that it might just be the appetite of a grown up.

After dinner, it's time for the baths.

This house has a tub a little like the baths at home, but it's much smaller. And I get to spend some time with Miss Zief here in the quiet.

Maybe I should ask a question about her? She's so mysterious, even though I've already known her a week, it feels like I'm constantly discovering new things about her.

>Ask Miss Zief a question? (Specify)

But that's the thing, it's Tsubaki who's asking Alice, and she doesn't know we don't remember anything. This is not "answer my questions", but rather " tell me more about you".

An excellent question where the answer is in flux and could change due to your own actions.

Gathering your courage, you ask her the first question that came mind.

"Will you teach me to make my own Ars Armagus?" It's the not quite the first thing a normal child should ask, but you've seen how Miss Zief fights with her book armagus, and it's amazing. Shooting lasers and conjuring holographic patterns just looks so cool.

"Hmmm." One hand rises from the edge of the bath where she was gripping the rim, before she rests her chin on it in a thinking pose. "Sure." Oh wow really- "As soon as you can do all the maintenance tasks I set for you without any help." You deflate. You can manage about half the lights without any help. But in order to be able to repair all of them on your own, you're going to need to get a lot better. Still, you have a goal now at least.

You ask some small talk about the next day, and it's set up to be mostly training, actually. You'll be baking cookies in the afternoon though, as part of a break! That's pretty exciting!

"Where did you learn so many things, Ms Zief?" What school did she attend? Or maybe it was an apprenticeship with some other master craftsman? You can't help but wonder what kind of education would give her such an amazing view of the wide world of Ars Magus.

"I don't know. And that's an answer I'm getting awful sick of."

Huh?

But how could she know so much and not even know how she knows it?

"I've got amnesia, Tsubaki. Anything that happened more than a few weeks ago, is all a blank to me. And even though I still get through daily life just fine, it's still really annoying, you know? Everyone at the very least has a past, somewhere they came from. Me? I don't even have that. I make do with what I have, but I still can't help but feel completely rootless, like I could just be blown away on the wind sometimes." She chuckles darkly.

So she has no family? No idea where lived before the village?

"Nope. Not a clue." She grins, happy sounding even as quiet thunder rumbles behind her eyes.

It's at this time you take action.

Surging across the tub, you hug her tightly.

"You're... You..." Your throat feels so very tight, forming the words is hard. Miss Zief's strong arms wrap around you, reassuring you. You find your voice again. "You've got roots! You can't be blown away!" It sounds so stupid, but you've got to say something! Miss Zief's the first person to make you feel safe, to make you feel warm.

To make you feel loved.

You hold onto her for awhile, definitely not crying. Even if does get rather close a few times. A little while later, you muster up the courage to ask one more question.

"May I call you mother?"

And here, she smiles so beautifully that you do cry.

And that's it for the day folks!

I hope you all liked the session.

As usual, I'm going to stick around for Q&A, and to listen to comments and suggestions.

Sorry the closer took so long, though. I ended up drifting off for a little bit.

Anyway, I'm going to go and archive this now!

I had a question about something; did Tsubaki meet Jin yet before we moenapped her?

I ask so that I can brace my anus for the shitstorm that is to come when the first game rolls around to happening.

Nope!

Jin is, at this time, still in the process of being adopted into the Kisaragi family. Tsubaki has no idea who he is.

Thanks to your meddling though, she has met Ragna. And basically thinks of him as kind of annoying, but decent enough.

Oh boy. Guess that means he'll have to deal with Hakumen having a little seizure procedure when he finds out how different the timeline is.

We really should send Tsubaki to school later down the line, if only so she meets other people of her age that aren't Kaka, and doesn't as a result become a social recluse with less people skills than Noel and/or a crazy cat(people) lady.

Haha, no. Terumi, Relius and others will disappear long before 2199. This is the world of Alice Zief man, here adorable little girls and kaka kittens managed to erase the entire concept of evil from the existence a long time ago.

>We really should send Tsubaki to school later down the line
I think that we'll need to ensure she meets Noel to attain Maximum Derailment.
Think about it, Tsubaki meets Noel and Makoto, hopefully becomes friends with them and invites them to visit the best Armagus Technician in the Hierarchical cities.
And then we can sink our claws in the well of cuteness and awkwardness thwat is Noel, possibly discovering she is Mu-12 before Terumi can reveal that and mess with her head.

And if Ragna keeps visiting us we can introduce them to each other. The resulting trainwreck will be glorious. Even the Bunny Vampire will be overwhelmed with Wat.
