You’re a mess of emotions. Everything was fine before this. You had your issues put to rest, mostly. Your path was clear. It’s almost laughable really. As a kid, you had that little fantasy about being a princess, and that your parents would come find you and take you away. You got over that, knowing there wasn’t a happy ending for you. Of course, as soon as you did, you started your journey, and found a different type of family. You found your happy ending already, and now it’s all muddled up by potentially being a princess. There’s a tiny bit of bitterness at having this issue dug up from it’s grave again.

You play another tune back at her.

And she responds again with the same tune, but with her own twist. After than, she sings an original set of chords at you, and you respond in kind.

The two of you enjoy a long, melodious jam session. The Fennekins are your audience and the forest is your stage. You pass the tune like a ball. You serve the song to her, she catches it and swirls it back. Each time you take it to another place. It shifts and flows without breaking.

Finally, the song ends. Both of you sit back in the grass, enjoying the afterglow of a great song. It felt like a journey, all on it’s own.

Meloetta seems to enjoy your company, but she doesn’t look like she’d do anything you ask.

I think trying to make a min maxed team is the absolute worst way to do this quest. Due to how gobble runs it, every single pokemon is viable. He even said if you have a very well trained magikarp, it could beat a mega evolved pokemon.

You offer the music box to her, but she hesitates.

“Go on, it’s for you.” You open it up and wind it. “It plays music.”

She takes the box, staring at it in wonder as it plays a tune. She accidentally snaps it shut and flies back.

“It’s alright,” you assure her. “If it closes up, you can just open it again. Don't be afraid.” You feel like there's a message there.

She flies back over and plays with it some more.

“If you want, you could come with me,” you offer gently. You don’t want to scare her away. “You like the attention, don't you Meloetta? I have a camera crew following me for a while now. You could have people see you perform whenever you want.”

She considers it. She’s still not entirely convinced, but you feel like she’s come to trust you a bit.

“Well, think on it, okay?” You smile. “Hey, listen. Can I ask you something?” You explain what’s been going on with your potential family, and the incident where a baby was taken away. “Do the local Pokemon know or remember anything about it?”

She doesn’t seem to know, but you get the impression she’ll look into it. She gives you a quick pat on the head and flies off, humming the tune from the music box.

The forest seems just a little less magical now. You look around. Several Fennekin are lazing about. One even looks like it’s sleeping.

We don't use PC boxes at all, and Prof. Fir gets along splendidly with our pokemon, he takes very good care of them while the are with him and we switch them out ona regular basis.
IC we switch them out every few days.

That sleeping Fenniken is pretty cute. You take out one of the weird Pokeballs and aim it.

But... that doesn’t seem right. Instead, you put the Pokeball away and pick the Fennekin up instead. It’s eyes roll awake, but it doesn’t try to run off. Instead, it rolls it’s belly up. You give it a little scratch and she stretches, content.

Well, that was easy.

You walk back to airship area and find the others. You see Robin and Jeanine with a massive haul of Pokeballs. Beatrix has two, but you get the feeling the king helped her out. Vance has a Stantler in a headlock that he’s walking around with, and Clair just looks annoyed at him.

The king and Beatrix greet you. The Fennekin finally decides to start moving around, and hides on your shoulder, behind your head.

The king smiles down at you. “Well, you and are friends certainly have an...unusual approach, but I suppose one can’t argue with success.”

“Cool!” Beatrix has amazement written all over her face. “I mean, quite charming.”

The small fire fox Pokemon keeps adjusting herself on your shoulder. She doesn't know what to do anymore with all these people around. She’ll probably make a break for the forest any second now.

“Way to go, Beatrix,” You kneel down to her. She’s really not that much younger or shorter than you, but you feel like you’re both much farther apart in terms of life experience. You guess that makes sense. She’s probably pretty sheltered. “You caught twice as many as me. You should be proud.”

“Thanks!” She looks absolutely ecstatic at your praise. She catches herself again. “That is quiet kind of one to say,” her voice takes a regal tone.

“It’s alright, dear,” the king says before turning his attention to you. “I assume you’ll be challenging the gym today?”

“You bet!” You nod before approaching the question that’s on your mind. “Let me know if this is asking too much, but if it’s alright with Fenniken, can she come with me?”

The king considers it. “I don’t see why not.” He reaches out to pet the Fennekin on your shoulder, but it suddenly gets spooked and runs off into the forest.

“Father!” Beatrix yells on your behalf.

“Oh, Kat. I’m terribly sorry,” he looks mortified.

You look at the small fox running into the woods. It’s fluffy tail is the last thing you see as it’s enveloped by the green of the forest. You almost let out a heavy sigh when something catches your eye. You see Meloetta and Fennekin watching from a bush.

You look to see if anyone else saw. It doesn’t look like it. You turn back and they’re gone.

This is an entirely fair point. Judging something by its competitive Tier is a mistake, especially since movesets work differently in the quest, and not every trainer is a minmaxing little spaff. Our team already sets entry hazards and abuses status afflictions, which seems like it's high-level stuff compared to a lot of the trainers we've met.

It wouldn't be hard at all to incorporate Meloetta as a special sweeper if we progressed to the point where that was possible.
