You are Clarissa, a high-school student, Kimiko's Substitute Shinigami and Karakura Town's only spiritual balancer and protector.

At the moment, you're trying to explain to a friend that you don't, in fact, have the hots for your brother. She's having a hard time believing you, though.

"Oh, come on. I'm his SISTER! Do you really not see how ridiculous this is, Tomoko?"

"Sibling love is something that truly exists. It's alluring because it's taboo, and it's entirely possible that you were caught in those forbidden webs! It's all too possible at our age, when hormones are running wild and... and make us do very foolish things!" She adjusts her glasses and nods to herself, her mouth forming into a firm frown. For a second there, it feels like you're bickering with Paul. They're kind of similar, aren't they? Both are insufferable, strict prudes.

"That's stupid! What are you basing that on, anime and manga? Those kinds of things are made by people who've never had siblings! It doesn't exist, and it never happens in real life! The most I've felt for that idiot is wanting to punch him in his stuck-up face!"

"Hey! How can you insult your own brother behind his back?"

"That's how much I don't care!"

"Is that so? Then how come you were acting so nicely to him recently? You even tried to... to kiss him!"

"I did WHAT?" You let out a genuine, and yet highly dramatic gasp. It's not embarrassment that you feel - it's morbid terror for your reputation and disgust for showing affection to your brother. You're going to stomp Chappy into dust. Tomoko seems pretty surprised at your reaction, and waits for you to elaborate with slightly widened eyes. You force yourself to regain composure and say something more believable than 'I was possessed by the soul of a dumb, incestuous rabbit'. "Well, I... there's something I really need to buy, and he controls our funds, so... I just wanted to get on his good side, alright?"

Lying to a friend feels terrible, even if that friend is being completely unreasonable and annoyingly insecure. This whole argument turned into a shouting match really quickly. It's a good thing that you decided to do this in the bathroom - at the very least, no one is around to hear it.

She still doesn't seem to be buying it, though. Tomoko keeps her arms folded as she skeptically glares at the white tiled floor. This whole situation is very unpleasant. She hasn't been convinced so far, and you're not sure how much longer she's willing to continue listening to you. You spent about half the lunch break on this debate already. You fear that Tomoko is just going to lose her patience and walk out on you if the next excuse isn't absolutely top-notch.

...

"Tomoko, I would sooner kiss you than him. Trust me." You blurt out without even the slightest stutter or the smallest hint of a joke.

For a while, Tomoko silently looks at you. Her lips are pursed, one corner of the mouth stretching along her cheek. Her expression is identical to the one Paul wears whenever he is highly disapproving of something you said or did. It's an expression containing wordless berating and disappointment.

"...Are you saying that I'm ugly and trying to use that as emphasis for your-..."

"No! That's not what I'm saying! I'm saying that I'd rather kiss a girl than Paul! You're not ugly at all, Tomoko!"

"How bad can kissing a girl really be? It's weird, but it's not disgusting. And if I'm not ugly, then that means kissing me isn't all that much of a trial, no? What are you trying to say? That you'd do it?"

"No, I'm... look." You swallow the urge to sigh in frustration. It feels like you're battering your wall against an impenetrable, jealous wall. "I don't like boys at all. Period."

"...Is that what you tell to guys you don't want to go on dates with, too? And besides, that just means that kissing me would be even less of a-..."

"Forget about the kissing thing, for crying out loud! I'm not going to kiss you, or Paul, or any other guy in the world!"

"Did you just call me a 'guy'?" Tomoko huffs with overly exaggerated vigor and turns away. This is getting unbearably annoying.

"...Do you want me to kiss you to prove it, you lunatic?" Desperate times, desperate measures, right?

"Goodness, no!" Tomoko's the one who lets out a gasp now, and she steps back, away from you. "I was just joking with that last part. Joking!"

"Does that mean you believe me?"

"I don't know, Clarissa. I suppose there is some merit to your words," Tomoko sighs. "I have never seen you show any interest in boys, that much is true. Ren kept thinking that you're hiding a boyfriend from us, but... I guess the truth isn't what she thought it would be."

(1/2)
>>
>>38968868
"I'm pretty sure she figured it out, actually." You sigh as well, only in relief.

"Well, I can't blame you for trying to keep it a secret. There are all kinds of people out there, so you never quite know how they might feel about it. Akemi could secretly be a homophobic serial killer for all we know." Tomoko seems to joke with an all too straight of a face. Like she really means what she says.

"I... really doubt that. Well, we cool?"

"I suppose." She nods, though she doesn't offer anything like an apology. Maybe she's not entirely convinced, after all. Or maybe she doesn't think she did anything wrong. Either way, you head out to have lunch together with the rest of your friends. Paul wasn't mentioned by either of you throughout the school day, and Akemi was smacked into submission for trying to bring it up.

Moriko slept through it and didn't understand what was going on.

...

Time passes uneventfully. By the end of the school day, you notice a small piece of folded up paper lying on your desk.

"Please come meet me alone in the park at six." Is what the note says, written with a pen and unsigned. You can't help but notice how the word 'alone' is slashed and scribbled over several times. It didn't help; you still recognized that word there.

"A secret admirer?" Kimiko suddenly hisses with amusement from behind, catching you in startled surprise. You hide the note, but it's too late. "Can I come with you?"

"Don't meet me in the fucking classroom like this! Weird rumors might start going around, damn it." You hiss at her back, only in frustration. "...And besides, I don't even know if I'm going. It might be something dangerous again..."

...

"Well, I'll check it out. On my own. The park's a pretty public place, so I doubt anything's gonna happen. I'll be careful, though." You decide. Kimiko pouts immediately.

"Well, have fun on your date." She waves you off and leaves the classroom. She does sound pretty disappointed.

"A date would probably be better than someone trying to kick my ass again..." You mumble and pocket the note. You take your leave as well.

...

You had plenty of time to change and get ready. Paul still hasn't noticed the missing money. The fridge is full of groceries, so it might take him a few more days to realize it, for better or worse.

You sit down on a bench and start waiting. The sun is setting, but the weather's warm and windless. Even though it's autumn, the trees are still wearing their coats of green leaves. No one seems to be around. It's peaceful. It feels very pleasant to just sit around and be unconcerned about things in this kind of tranquility. You've been fighting Hollows nearly every single day, and you can certainly feel the strain of it all, even if it's not a physical kind of burden. Not to mention all the complications that poured into your regular life...

Being a substitute Shinigami is hard work for sure.

Suddenly, you hear footsteps. The person is walking on grass instead of the road, maybe to avoid being easily noticed. You stand up from the bench and turn.

It's just as you thought, though you hoped that you were wrong.

It's that girl again.

>It's that girl again.

"Ah... hey." Yuuko greets you, trying to keep up a smile and just barely succeeding. You greet her back. She looks extremely anxious as she approaches, legs all but wobbling in fear. The girl keeps one hand behind her back, and under her other arm she holds a thin, pink box.

Wait, are those...

She extends both of her arms towards you. One hand holds a large bouquet of beautiful red roses, and the other a heart-shaped box of chocolates. You find yourself at a loss for words. Yuuko speaks up first.

"I'm... I'm sorry for what happened before. I said some really stupid things, and I... I'm really sorry. Please accept these." She mumbles, her face beet red. You feel your own face getting warmer as well.

"Y-you really didn't need to do something like this. And besides, you don't need to... to apologize." You say, trying your best not to stumble on your own words. There's one thing you've managed to realize for sure, though - these are undeniably romantic gifts, and not ones you offer to someone as an apology. Well, at least not to a stranger. "...Did you break up with your boyfriend?"

"Ah... no, no, I didn't." She shakes her head. This is kind of a bad sign, too. She must know what these kinds of gifts are for, so why is she offering them to you even though she's still in a relationship?

"Are you, uh, unhappy with him, Yuuko?" You ask, reluctant to take the roses. "I mean, if you are, then you shouldn't-..."

"It's... not that I'm unhappy with him. I..." Yuuko swallows heavily and takes a step closer. The flowers get really close. "I just like you too, Clarissa." She went and said it. She seriously confessed. This is getting really weird again. She couldn't make this any weirder if she tried.

Maybe realizing that the arisen silence isn't a good sign, Yuuko frantically continues. "But... I'm just apologizing right now! S-so, that has nothing to do with this... I shouldn't have even mentioned it..."

Yuuko stares up at you with pleading eyes. Her body can barely keep itself from trembling. As she waits for your answer, she holds her breath.

You feel uncomfortable and awkward.

...

>Accept the gift. You'll probably make her cry if you don't.
>Refuse the gift. "Yuuko, you're... you're going way too fast with this. Let's be friends first, get to know each other. You know?"

Well... The gifts were already purchased, so you can't really just... just make her keep them. You let out a small sigh as you take Yuuko's gifts, but she doesn't seem to pay it much heed. The girl smiles in utter joy. Her attempt to keep herself look at least a little composed is barely noticeable. Are those traces of shame, or is she just trying to come off as cute? ...No, that's getting a bit harsh. You can't be this awkward without being genuine. Right?

Just... just what the heck is she doing, seriously? This is the most awkward date, or... whatever this is. Does she really have a boyfriend? Does someone dig this kind of... this kind of thing?

"Uh... look, Yuuko," You start, looking at the offered roses. They're quite pretty, but that doesn't make any of this okay. "You're... going way too fast. I still don't know anything about you, so we should just-"

"O-of course! That's fine! We'll get to know each other, n-no problem! I just wanted to apologize..." Her phone makes some noises. After a glance on it, she continues her frantic mumbling. "Ah, I need to go..."

"...We should just be friends first, Yuuko. You know?" You finish your statement. Yuuko freezes up for a bit, her smile quickly receding, but she reluctantly nods. "...You can go if you need to, I don't mind. Who is it?"

"...Oh. Uh, it's nothing important, really... W-well, I'll see you around?"

You shrug and nod. Yuuko keeps up a meek smile, says her farewells, and leaves. Her walk seems a bit heavy and kind of dejected, though it is quick. It's certainly lacking the cheerfulness she seemed to have when you accepted the roses.

Though, now you need to go back home. That means carrying these goddamn flowers all the way through the town and to your house. You hope you won't meet anyone you know in either of those places. Even if Paul won't want to talk about it, there's someone else at your house that most certainly will.

...In hindsight, you'd have preferred the ass-kicking.

Before you even enter your room, before she even looks at the flowers in your hands, Kimiko is already smiling. Grinning. She's sprawled out on your bed, reading one of your old manga books. And yet you're absolutely certain that her smirk is not directed at the contents of the comic. If a smile had its own pair of eyes, those eyes would be looking at you.

"What?" You bark at her, and she tilts her head towards you. She's so smug it makes you want to punch her. "What are you laughing at?"

"I just saw something funny today, that's all." She puts the comic aside and stands up, hands innocently crossed behind her back. Kimiko then looks at the roses you put into an empty vase, and leans in to snatch the box of chocolates. She opens it and starts eating.

You glare at her. Her grin only grows wider.

"Did you fucking spy on me, Kimiko?"

"No, no, it's not spying. I just needed to stay near you in case a Hollow attacked. Well, it didn't come down to that." She pops another candy into her mouth. That must be the third one. "...You basically robbed a naive and hopeful girl. That was awful and hilarious."

"I'm going to throw this fucking chair at you, Kimiko."

She keeps giggling and verbally poking at you for a while longer.

"We're going on a patrol tonight, aren't we?" After enough time has passed for Kimiko to calm down with her giggling outburst, she brings up a more serious subject. You nod. "You still have a few more hours left. What'll you be doing?"

"You know, we've been together for several days now, but I don't really know anything about you, Kimiko." You say as you sit down on the chair you were previously tempted to throw at the girl.

"About me? There's... not really much to say." Kimiko sheepishly scratches the back of her head, but her expression turns melancholic. Her voice takes up those sarcastic notes you haven't heard in a little while, as if she's amused at her own life. "I'm over a hundred years old, and yet I don't have much to say about my life. That's strange, isn't it?"

"You're over a hundred years old? You really didn't seem that old..." You say. Kimiko smiles, as if flattered. It's funny, but you've actually realized something.

You don't remember what Kimiko looks like at all. It may have been dark at the time, and the situation may have been dire... but you can't recall a single one of her features at all. Not even the sound of her voice.

"Shinigami are older than they appear. They don't age like normal people do. They age very, very slowly. I'm actually 108 years old. Well, it's always nice to hear that you look younger than you are, I suppose." She chuckles.

"Well... Who were you when you were alive? How did you die, if that's not too much to ask?"

"I've never lived. I was born within the walls of the Seireitei. Think of it as a region for Shinigami and the nobility of Soul Society. I was born to one of its biggest, most important families, and as a... in a very important position, to boot." She looked like she was going to use a complex term you had no chance of recognizing, so she just condensed it into something really simple. It almost makes you feel stupid, really.

"Are you born a Shinigami, or do you choose to be one?" You ask.

"You choose to be one. Are you going to ask me why I became a Shinigami?" Kimiko guesses your next question quite easily. She smiles about it in satisfaction, and then continues. "It's because of my wealth and status. I was too important to be allowed outside the estate. They gave me everything I asked for, but I realized that I had too many years left to be able to go on like that. I ran away and took up the role of a Shinigami to see what life - what living - is really like."

"You became a Shinigami just to see what this world is like?"

"Yes. As time went on and as working conditions became harsher, I had to put my dreams aside in favor of survival. I wanted to just abuse the system for my own gain, but that didn't work at all. I had to actually put in a ton of effort, years and decades of it, before I was allowed to step a single foot out into the world of the living." Kimiko nostalgically chuckles. "Do you know how excited I was to go out here? To see the living, normal world with my own two eyes?"

"Was it worth it?" You ask her, and Kimiko turns towards the ceiling, thinking her answer over. After a minute of silent contemplation, she gives a depressing answer.

"I don't know." And then she goes quiet for a while longer. "Even though I was looking at life, I still didn't know what living was like."

"But... do you know now?"

"...I have an idea. I'm not completely clueless about 'living' anymore. Whether my efforts were worth it or not, I think I will be able to answer by the end of the week." This is the conclusion this girl came to.

End of the week. After only seven days of living, can she really answer her question?

"Do you want to keep living as Aiko?"

She doesn't respond. Perhaps she doesn't know, or she doesn't want to give the answer.

I don't think it'd be right at all.

On one hand I like Kimiko and it'd be nice to have her around. On the other, letting her keep using Aiko's body is both problematic from a moral standpoint and, perhaps just as much, for Clarissa's mental health. It can't be healthy to both constantly have 'Aiko' around and not have to deal with her death, and simultaneously have to be reminded of her all the time.

I figured Clarissa whether healthy or not loves having Aiko among the "living."
>>
>>38973244
Well it's not exactly Aiko, is it. Still, I guess not having to face things like a funeral or such would be appealing.

"If you feel like you need more time, then you can stay for as long as you want."

You said that, and yet it'll be you who will have to keep the town safe while Kimiko lives on. It sounds like a promise, but you don't know what you're promising to her. A promise you can't grant is just a lie. Are you simply trying to tell her that it's fine to use Aiko's body?

What if she needs an entire lifetime to get the answer to her question? What if she needs several? Would that still be fine?

What if she never finds the answer? What if the answer lies only in death? She would never grasp it in that case, because she was never alive. Your promise ultimately doesn't change anything.

Kimiko doesn't grace your words with a response. Perhaps she's thought of the same thing. She had a lot of time to think on this, so she probably realized it before you have.

...But you'll make this meaningless promise work, somehow. You'll find a way to turn this into something more than just hot air.

That's what you decided on. That is your wish.

...

Night falls. It's time for the patrol. Before you go, the two of you try to think of a plan. Well, it largely comes down to you listening to Kimiko.

"I believe that we'll be seeing the Hollow from yesterday again. Hollows tend to prey on their relatives first and foremost. Ren is still alive, so I think that's where he will attack tonight." Kimiko explains, keeping an eye on the screen of her phone. "That Hollow is fairly weak, but you - or someone else - will die if you underestimate him. He isn't strong, but he's fully sentient. Those are usually the worst ones to fight. And we still don't know what his abilities are."

"I saw him corroding Ren's chain, but I don't really know how it works. I just need to cut through his skull before he tries anything. I hope I've recovered enough strength do that."

"Be careful." Kimiko emphasizes again. "If you push him too far, he might retreat or do something underhanded. Since he's weak, he'll most likely rely on those latter methods entirely; whatever he can think of. And I'm sure he can think of a lot. If you don't kill him immediately, if you let him think and do something, there will be trouble for sure."

"I got it. Take him down in one go..." You nod, gulping down Chappy. Unfortunately, you can't really punch it while it's in your own body. "Are we ready?"

"Not quite. You need to decide on your approach. Ren is his target, so, for starters, figure out what you want to achieve."

...

>Ambush him in Ren's room. A tiny area that'll be easy to hide in, but will probably put your friend at risk.
>Ambush from the roof. A much wider area. Try to prevent him from entering Ren's apartment at all.

Might have been good to say to her, "Being alive is knowing that it's just a matter of a few decades and half the people you've known will have fallen to the Hollows. You value your loved ones so much more, and you're always so afraid that you end up learning to live with it."
