The year is 2089, and on the surface, this world seems just the same as ours. If you look more closely though, you will find psychics, mages, mythological monsters and more, all hidden from the general populace.
You are an agent of the Order of the Magus Hunters, the organisation keeping this secret from the rest of the world. They are troubleshooters, police, military and assassins all in one, and all so that the world can be safe.

The options are a guideline, not an absolute, which is why I will always include a Write in option. I may occasionally forget to add it but feel free to do so anyway. Some options I list are good, some are bad, most won’t be really awesome. I leave it up to you to find ways to do that.
Also feel free to ask things if they’re not entirely clear. I reserve the right to dodge the issue if it’s done for plot reasons, but otherwise I’ll gladly provide more information.
>>
>Last time on Magus Hunter Quest: you find out more about the magic circle, inform HQ about it twice, start the initial phase of McGuyver Lethal and Under Siege Edition. Just as you got back from shopping for it, Milly detected an awakening. When you went there, you found it were the awakenings of 4 psychic siblings at the same time. You used blake to gather them all up and neutralise the worst of it.

>All together won vs keep the boy separate with 4/3

You use your powers to calm Nathan down and snap him out of the hallucination. You then pick up Liam, who only just snapped out of it himself, and you, Nathan, Katherine, Liam and the boy head to the garage where Blake, Raphael and the parents are. Once there, you suggest to move to the house to make talking easier.

On the way to the house, both parents throw angry looks at the boyfriend, who still seems to be fairly panicky. He almost twists out of Katherine’s grip on his arm, but she holds on to him. The eldest daughter is covered in a cloak only, covering everything but still revealing her lack of clothes. All of the children are still in a sort of daze, and you can feel strong sparks of psionic energy fly out from them, quickly extinguished by Blake’s aura before they do any harm.

Once at the table, you take a look around. All of the civilians are obviously still confused and have a lot of questions, but the parents mostly seem to be angry towards the boy, the children are still unable to think straight, and the boy mostly just wants to get the hell away from here.
>>
>How do you proceed?
>1. Let Katherine handle this. She’s trained for it after all.
>2. Explain calmly what happened and stay factual. The high emotions of the oldest having sex probably caused her to awaken, providing the catalyst for her siblings to awaken themselves. To prevent them from being a danger, they should come with you.
>3. Tell them a cover story. It was a strong and highly localised storm, nothing out of the ordinary happened. Their children can get psychological support for a few years.
>4. Write in.

>Telling them yourself will require a Soul roll for convincing them, while leaving it to Katherine will have me rolling for her. The DC may be higher or lower depending on what you tell them so coming up with good arguments will help you out a lot.
>>

Pipe in as necessary with technicalities

Maybe have Nathan give his 2 cents as well, considering his background.

>boyfriend, who still seems to be fairly panicky. He almost twists out of Katherine’s grip on his arm, but she holds on to him.
this is the kind of shitstain people wanted to be here when we're trying to convince the parents?
What were you thinking?
He literally got caught having a roll in the hay with the farmer's daughter, and you want him with you when talking to the farmer?

Have Katherine proceed with us providing our experiences from our own awakening and how the Order helped us control our power, as well as Nathan saying how the Order helped him out. And Katherine relating her own experience as a mother awakening.
>>

I did not, but this involves him. Now he'll get a chance to stick with his crush through thick or thin, or get mindraped by Order psions. He'll go with the latter I assume.

>>
>>38988692

You're actually really lucky. Nathan managed to roll a 97 on his own talking.
>>
>>38988550
he has information that isn't generally allowed for civilians. keeping him around the main group is just precaution. he''ll be sent off to be trained or mindwiped later anyways.
>>
You nod to Katherine, and she starts the usual talk. You’re from an organisation dedicated to helping those with special powers and keeping the the population safe. Their children are amongst both those with powers and those to protect. As they saw, their awakening can be dangerous, both to themselves and their surroundings. That’s why the Order generally takes in those that awaken for at least a year or two, after which they get the option to join the order or go back to their own lives. There’s adapted arrangements for the younger ones of course. They can visit their parents of course, and if they go back at the end of their training, the order will keep in touch to see if everything is still in order. She adds in that she has the powers too, and though she awakened at a relatively high age, it was still difficult to get through and would have been all but impossible without the Order’s help.

The parents are listening carefully. It’s a lot to take in of course, and they’re not taking it as well as they could have. You nudge Nathan, and he talks about his own experience as a father of an awakened individual. How his daughter almost killed herself. You can see it’s still a bit sore, but he really cares about it and wants to prevent these people from suffering any further harm. It has a lot of impact with the parents. You can see their worried looks, glances at the children and each other.

Finally you weigh in. Your own awakening was very mild and non-threatening, but you can probably tell them a few more things to convince them.
>>
>1. Tell them of the joys of their children’s powers. Once they learn how to use it it’s a special something that’s just a part of them and of who they are.
>2. Tell them how the order treated you. How you were taught to wield your powers. Put them at ease by explaining how their children will get nothing but the best care.
>3. Stay silent. You probably won’t top Nathan’s talk, and you might do more harm than good.
>4. Write in.

“They’ll be well treated. When I awakened, I was helped too.” You relate to them your experiences. You don’t mention your parents were in the Order too so you could see them regularly, but you tell them of the classes, the teachers and the counselling. How there were many other kids with similar experiences who could relate to what happened to you, and how it helped you accept who you are.

Eventually, when you said everything you wanted to say, they ask for a moment of privacy to talk, and leave the room for a moment. You hear hushed voices, but you can feel their decision before they come back into the room. They sit down, look at Katherine and nod.

“So, it’s decided then.” Katherine says. “It’s safest for them if we take them to our facility right now. The people who will take care of them will contact you the moment they’re settled in for the practical arrangements. You’ll be kept informed of how they’re doing of course. If you could pack them some bags? Just for a few days for now.

The parents agree and quickly leave the room to pack their children’s bags. The kids themselves are still sitting next to Blake, though the youngest is clinging to him, and you can see the endeared look on his face. The oldest, Tiffany, is just sitting on her chair staring to the floor in front of her.

“Oi. You… What ‘appens to me now? You gotta let me go roight? I didn’ do anythin’ wrong! I mean, I was just ‘aving a quick shag!” You feel Nathan’s about to bitchslap him when suddenly the rooms grows a bit darker and Nathan pauses. A surge of psionic energy floods the room, overwhelming Blake’s aura.

“Just a quick shag?” You hear Tiffany whisper. Her eyes are glowing. Not a good sign.

we really shouldn't be abusing our position of authority just to bitchslap some asshole. This guy also has knowledge on the same level as the average family of gifted children so he's a potential recruit if he doesn't want to be mindwiped.

May be possible, but I have a bad feeling about it. Bitchslapping her (ex)-)Boyfriend is a situational and spontaneous reaction, but fucking up his mind on her wish is... a premeditated crime and a lesson in what not to do with your psychic powers? Don't want to give her ideas about what she could get away with.

Okay, while I was in favor of bitchslapping him-who-begged-for-it, I think we should keep in mind that we don't know shit about him. Currently, the boy is surrounded by psychics, strangers and hostile parents, it's entirely possible and even likely that he slipped into panic mode and tries to cut his involvement and get away. I can't think of any teenager who would stay and face the storm without at least trying to talk himself out of it.

You immediately reach out to block whatever she’s trying. Your mind forms a web around hers, trying to keep it in. You feel the anger, the hurt, the confusion. You don’t just keep it contained inside her. Pushing it back in won’t solve anything. She needs to be healed.

Telepathy isn’t your strongest point, but you try to vent the emotions swirling around her. Your instincts take over, and you… Take away the pain somehow? You’re not even sure what you did, but you did something you never even knew you could. For a moment, it feels as if time stands still. The raging emotions soothe and are reduced to a flickering flame. Still present but in the background of her mind.

“Tiffany. He’s not worth it. You have a bright future ahead of you. Don’t throw it away by doing something to him you’ll regret.” You know your words shouldn’t have as much impact as they do, but they’re enough somehow. Tiffany comes to, and there’s simply an expression of mild surprise on her face. She glances at the guy, frowns and looks back to you.

“Yes… Thank you.” She says.

The boy himself nearly fell of his chair. Only Liam standing behind him stopped it from tipping over. You’d say the sheer terror on his face was enough of a punishment for now.

His fate is out of your hands though. He’ll be handed over to the rehabilitation department, offered a place in the order if they think he’s trustworthy enough, which you doubt, and if not all knowledge of the mystic will be erased.

You still feel your mind resonating from what you just experiences. It’s an odd feeling, as if…

Holy shit what was that? No one seems to have noticed anything strange, but it just felt as if your mind was torn in two and put together again. SOMETHING just happened, and you’re not sure what.

The parents return, and Tiffany embraces them. The rest of the children seem to be coming out of their stupor too. The situation is quickly explained to them so they’ll understand the basics, and they’re guided to your vehicles. You’ll have to squeeze a bit to get all 5 of them with you, but you’ll manage.

The 4 kids go into the van alongside Blake, Katherine and Raphael. You, Liam, Nathan and the now most likely ex-boyfriend are in the car.

It’s a quiet drive to the facility. At least in your car. You expect the kids to be full of questions, and Katherine and Raphael are there to answer some of them. You call ahead, and once you arrive there’s a team standing ready to take over the kids. The boy is hauled off to the side by Nathan and Liam. You’ll still have to be debriefed about this, so you can probably get them to decide whether or not they take him in or not. Even if they do, it’s with the necessary magical precautions of course.

Tiffany pauses before she goes with the caretakers, and turns to you specifically. She’s shyly smiling. “You know… Thanks for what you did. Not just for me, but for them too.” She nudges her head towards her siblings. “I… I hope we’ll meet again.”

Perhaps we are the eldritch abomination. It would be a nice twist from normal. Maybe we are the shard of an eldritch abomination bound in human flesh and crit success are explained by our containment leaking and allowing us to access a portion of our true power. “All in a day's work.” You smile. “Take care of yourselves and of them. Order will help you, but it always helps to have family or friends as well.”

“I will. Thanks again.” She positively beams at you, turns around and hurries after her family. Sheesh. You might have overdone it a bit, it seems.

You gather up the team and head to debriefing. It’s not as informal as you’re used to. It’s not even a real debriefing, since it’s a Cerebrum compound. They’re pretty much the civilians of the Order. You simply give them a quick rundown and tell them how they all reacted. They’re a lot more interested in the kids themselves than in what happened. To better be able to support them you suppose. They do raise an eyebrow when you mention you calming down Tiffany psionically. They ask you for more details, but you tell them you’re not entirely sure yourself. They seem a bit miffed at you for doing something you had no idea was going to work, but they don’t really have any authority over you to make that a formal warning or anything.

Then it comes down to the boy.

“Well, Nathan Hathaway. The boyfriend. You mentioned him being scared out of his mind, but do you think he could be useful to us and willing to cooperate? Mind-surgery isn’t exactly easy you know.” The Cerebrum debriefer asks.

He seems more a liability than anything else. Probably will never make it as an asset, and if so would likely be a twat like our former leader. He would probably resent a life condemned to cleaning, and probably is not responsible enough to handle the knowledge he now posses without the possibility of turning.. Just wipe him and leave him be.

“He wasn’t exactly making a good impression, but he was under a lot of stress. I don’t really think I’ve seen enough of him to properly evaluate, aside handling pressure pretty badly. I think it’d be best if you just kept him here for a few days and decide then.” You say.

“Oh, we’re evaluating him regardless. Your opinion is simply added into that evaluation. Thank you. That will be all.

You gather the team and head back to the mansion. Your new home, you remind yourself. It’s still odd to think of it as such, but then again, you’ve only been there for a few days.

You’re home past dinner-time, and it seems the spirit is very punctual. The dinner’s cold by the time you get there, and you don’t have a microwave. You note that down on the list of things to get, and have a cold meal. It’s not as tasty as it would have been warm, but it’s still nice.

This afternoon you hurriedly threw the things you bought out of the van and into the house, so after dinner you go and clean things up. You store the things you bought for the training room in a room next to the one you’re going actually going to convert, and by the time you’re finished, it’s too late to start the actual work. You just sit together with the team (minus Milly, but you’re not sure whether or not to count her as part of the team anymore) in the living room, chatting.

You text Milly that you want to talk to her in the living room. Once she arrives, you stand up.

“Well, ladies and gentlemen, first of all, I’d like to congratulate you on a job well done on our first assignment. There were some hiccups here and there, but I’m sure we can get those ironed out. I would like your thoughts on the mission though.

“Not much to say is there?” Nathan says. “We did the job. Overcame the difficulties without casualties. Seems like a smooth run, even if the hallucinations were… hindering.”

“You make a good leader.“ Katherine smiles at you. “I think it couldn’t have gone much better, all things considered.”

“Didn’t get to do much.” Liam just says and leaves it at that.

“I kinda liked being a babysitter,” Blake says, and he grins. “Nice change of pace from being used as bait for vampires.”

“I must say I’m a bit embarrassed by my, erm, malfunction at the start.” Raphael’s blushing a bit.

“Ah, don’t worry about it. It was as much my fault as it was yours.” Blake tells him.

“That leaves you, Milly.” You say.

“My intelligence gathering was unacceptably slow. The fact that it were four awakenings bundled together should have been available to you much earlier. I have already punished myself accordingly and will cut off any distractions from improving myself.” It’s only halfway her speech that you realise Milly’s standing at attention. You also notice something odd on her right wrist. It’s not a burn wound, but it looks a bit like it.

>1. Tell Liam that it was an unfortunate situation. He’ll be much more valuable to you in future missions.

“I did.” She replies.

“Yes sir.” She walks back a few paces until she’s standing next to the door.

“Right, for the rest of you… Liam, it wasn’t exactly the best geography or mission for a sniper. I was glad to have you available and I’m sure there’ll be chances for you to shine in the future.”

You turn to Raphael. “Raphael, it wasn’t really much of a problem, and it’s quite understandable considering the situation. Perhaps if you train alongside Blake in the future you might start to get used to it?” You look towards blake for confirmation.

“Sorry boss, no idea. I heard my situation doesn’t happen very often. One more in Egypt a few years back or so, but nothing else. I’m willing to try though.” He slaps Raphael on the shoulder.

“Right, now if you’ll excuse me, I have something to discuss with Milly.” You leave the room and head to your office, Milly following you without a word. You sit down in your chair and signal her to sit down too.

But we know what's wrong with her. And in her position it's perfectly fine. I wouldn't mind her being more social, but if she wants to be the nerd in her tower room, it's her prerogative.
We should ask her to not punish herself though, it might get Jeeves too horny.

Also knowledge that she could have done better is a punishment in itself and putting more on herself is just waste of punishments and potentially reducing her performance in future, not improving it.

"She's performing very well, but I'm worried about her burning out if she keeps this attitude. Literally."
>>
“Let’s start with the beginning. Give me a detailed report about your perceived mistakes and your punishment."

“While this uni- my initial noticing of the awakenings was within the allowed time limit, I did not sufficiently analyse the data my instruments were showing me. There were several indications that something more than a simple awakening was going on and I failed to spot them all.” As you notice her descending into technobabble about her instruments, all kinds of readings she gets and the data analysis, you notice her eyes have glazed over, as if she’s on autopilot while giving her report. What you can make out of it is that she missed one or two very small indications that could have easily been attributed to hardware malfunction or insufficiently accurate readings. “So the conclusion is that on top of missing several key components of the information, my reaction time was roughly 12.04 seconds late.”

There is something seriously wrong with this girl. This is not how a human being should work. Perhaps she’s not human, but then at least the oculus should have informed you. Damn their secrecy. “And your wrist? Your self-punishment, I take it?”

“Yes sir. Fifteen minutes of neurologic pain inducer, as is appropriate for this type of mistake.”

“From now on, your self-inflicted punishment will be analysis and improvement in a private debriefing with me only. Entirely non-physical." You tell her.

For a moment, you think you can feel a bit of shock emanate from her, but a split second later it’s gone again. She has tight control over her emotions, it seems.

Tomorrow, you remind yourself as you fail to suppress a yawn. you head to your room, change and get in bed. As you wait for sleep to come to you, you get an idea. You try to make contact with the spirit. After a few minutes, you think you made a connection, and you channel all the psychic energy you can spare to him. You feel him grow stronger. It’s not much, but it might shave a few days off the time he needs to fully manifest.

-

The next day, you wake up slightly grumpy. Your sleep has been plagued by incomprehensible nightmares, going hand in hand with dreams of Milly transforming into a car and fighting giant mechas. At least breakfast is punctual. For a moment you think you see a slight shimmer in the corner of your eye as you enter the dinner room, but it’s gone when you try to find it again. Your eyes playing tricks on you? Or perhaps just an indication that the spirit is getting stronger?

You have breakfast with the other early birds of the team, and stay a bit longer when the rest arrives. Milly is nowhere to be seen. Your shipment of things you ordered at the Order should be here soon.

You'll have to do some more research on that. An remember, Lilliana will have done some research into the circle and the house as well by now.

Writing.
>>
You tell the team to start working on the surveillance net, and leave things in Nathan and Liam’s capable hands. They seem to work together pretty well and will be able to complement each other with their knowledge of respectively military tactics and Order doctrine.

You yourself head to your office and call up Lilliana. She picks up after the first ring. “Ah, Primus Weston, I was about to call you myself. I’ve got some information for you.”

“Actually, that wasn’t why I called.” You quickly explain the situation with Milly, and share your suspicions that Milly is either not entirely human or is some kind of vat-grown person or something. It sounds silly and a bit like a conspiracy theory when you say it like that, but then again, you work for an organisation that keeps magic, psionic powers and their affiliated creatures under the wraps on a global scale.

“That does indeed sound odd. Bloody Oculus and their secrecy. I’ve had some of it before myself,” Lilliana tells you, “But something like this? It sounds like you’re part of some strange field-test of human experimentation of some kind. I’m going to sort this out for you as my top priority. You can’t function if you don’t know if you can trust your own team. If all else fails I’ll force them to reassign her and get you someone I know that I can trust to work with you. For now, play nice and let her be as much as possible as long as it doesn’t disrupt your own work.”

“Thank you, ma’am.” You say.
>>
“Now, as for the magic circle thing…” She goes on. “I haven’t been able to do that much yet, but I can tell you this. Records show that the house was built by an eccentric nobleman in 1789. We don’t know much about him other than his name, Tobias Patterson. There’s no record of him ever being married or having children, and the only person he ever seemed to interact with was a local boy he hired as a butler or something. Now here come the odd things. First of all he would have been somewhere in his twenties or thirties when he built the mansion according our records, but he was reported to have died in 1877 in the mansion, which would put him well beyond 110 years old, pretty much impossible for that period. Another thing is that in his will he left the mansion to a high ranking member of the order who didn’t even know Tobias existed. He didn’t know what to do with it so he donated it to the order itself to make use of. It had occasionally been used as a temporary command post for local actions or something of the like, and it was only when the headquarters of that region burned down two years ago that it was taken into consideration for using it as a base of operations. By which time it had been in the order’s possession for so long that no one bothered to search it properly.”

“As for what to do, for now just leave the circle be. You’re allowed to do cautious research as long as Raphael deems it to have zero risk to do so, but it’s not a priority for you. That order stands until the higher-ups figure out what to do with it. I reckon they’ll send a Cerebrum/Oculus joint investigation team or something.”

>Anything you want to tell or ask her?
>1. Thank you ma’am. I’ll keep you informed on any progress.
>2. Tell/ask her something.
>3. Write in.

I’ll throw you a bone and note that you know something for sure that doesn’t fit with what she said about the mansion/circle/owner.

So is she basically a Mentat a la Dune?

Huh. Gimme a moment to prowl the archives.

>but eventually, the master departs towards the north, and the man, the mansion, the spirit decays. Fades away. Until now.

Immortal wizards ahoy.

>2. Tell/ask her something.
That's wrong. We've managed to contact the former butler who is now bound to this house as a spirit and according to him the old master never died but headed north.
>>
I knew it was something about the master. I guess we should >2. Tell/ask her something. about it.
>>
>>38995507
The Master didn't die, he wandered off and left the Mansion to his butler, who is bound to it eternally.

Now I'm wondering how many people would have caught that if I hadn't said anything about it. Perhaps I should have more faith in your abilities to remember minor details about something that you read several days ago.

Anyway, writing.

Dune is a universe created by Frank Herbert, counting quite a number of books.

“Actually, I’ve already confirmed that he didn’t die in the mansion.” You tell Lilliana.

“Oh, how’s that?” She asks. You explain to her about the spirit bound to the house and your contact with him.

“And he clearly showed his master leaving to head north, the direction of one of the things connected to the circle, and never coming back.” You say.

“Now that IS interesting. I’ll try to see where that information came from and dig a bit deeper. Keep up the good work, Weston.”

She lays in the call, and you head out to help the rest of the team. While you were calling, the Order delivery has been made, and you spend the rest of the morning finishing the work of setting up the security grid.

“We’ll still have to configure it properly.” Liam says. “I can do that by myself in the afternoon.”

You nod, and the team heads inside to eat. Raphael skips lunch for a moment and goes to shower first. Apparently he slipped while placing a camera and fell straight into a pile of deer droppings, and Blake keeps teasing him about it.

>What will you do in the afternoon? Liam is otherwise occupied.
>1. Start working on the training room. This will take a few days of work to get in working order. The more people helping the faster it goes.
>2. Tell Raphael and Milly to investigate the connections of the circle. Try and find what or where they lead to.

One of the best sci-fi book series I've read. Be warned though, it's a very heavy writing style and while the first book is about 50% adventure 50% politics, the further the series progresses the more it goes towards 90% politics.
And then it jumps back to lots of action in book 5 and 6.
And whoever counts the books 7/8 that his son wrote as "part of the series", stfu.
>>
>3. Investigate the dolmen (who do you take with you?)

Raphael, Milly. Covers both magical and mundane research. maybe Katherine too, you never know what an empath could pick up.

This is a bit of an odd spot to leave it. I'm going to bed now, so I hope there might be some more votes before the thread closes.

If not I'll figure something out from what's already and hope people aren't too mad at me.

Next thread is Wednesday.

Good night folks.

She's a house elf, isn't she?
"Dobby slammed his hand in the oven, master"

Crap. I hope Liliana won't make the oculus guys reassign our mentat. It would be kinda sad for her to get back to her self-harming practices.

Yeah I kind of want her to stick around and mellow out or figure out what her deal is rather than just pull her from the field

It's an "If all else fails" and won't be done without your permission.
