You are Lyra, a partially transparent, soft shelled arachne.

Your chitin is currently sensitive as can be- to the point where even a light breeze could send you into gales of laughter and shivering.
So you'll just stay inside, where it's safe, thank you.

On the plus side- Your shell is once again a lustrous red, shimmering with 'veins' of magma. And your hands no longer feel like fat sausages.
You're mostly healed!
Aside from your fleshy bits. But those are bandaged up, and you sat your mother down until she assured you that wouldn't be shedding limbs.
She said that you would never discarded your human or elf bits, which seems like an entirely loaded statement, but you felt a great deal safer after, anyways.

You still had a weird nightmare where your ears dropped off, and new, more sensitive ones replaced them.
And then your arms flew away on dragonfly wings, and you woke up with the strangest sense of vertigo.

Arms attached, though.

Your sister's house in warm in the morning- rays of sunshine moving across the floor in time with its ascent.
It is not, however, designed for your rather oversized family unit.

Your brothers have laid claim to the corner of the living room, while you took the rest with your friends- denied the use of your shell as a bed, they've spread themselves across the floor like monster throw rugs.
>>
>>38988592
Your parents ventured upstairs, taking refuge in one of the smaller rooms above.
Aria apparently felt comfortable to sleep on the stairs. You're not sure what that says about your sister, but you suppose she'll have little issue adventuring if she can find comfort so easily.

Sara passed of in the kitchen. You can see one leg through the door, twitching in time with whatever dream your youngest sister is having.

You yawn, hiking your blanket around your shoulders.

at least she hasn't hit us with lewd dust, that would be a really mean way to get revenge seeing as our whole family is here so we'd never forget what it means to piss off Nin.

You would really like to be better at elvish. There's the whole matter of your extended family, and the fact that you are planning to head to a country made up of mostly elves- It feels like a very practical skill to have.

Of course, practical and easy to acquire have never seen eye to eye.

Sheszka has rolled across the floor, ears and tail flopping, until she comes to a rest in a patch of sunlight, somehow flattening herself further against the floor.

With the sun rising, though, the patch is moving.
And so to must wonder woof.

Inching along to keep the rays right where they belong, the wolf wiggles a few inches every so often, keeping time with the crawl of the sunbeams.

Your father doesn't take too long to come downstairs. Everyone wakes pretty early in your family, luckily enough.
Of course, he still has to navigate the stair hazard that is your sister, clambering over spider blockade to reach the ground.

You wave good morning, and he return it with a sleepy smile, scooting past all of you to make himself some tea.
It smells a bit too bitter for your taste.

You manage a passable greeting in elvish, but you rapidly run out of non-weather related topics to converse upon.
So much for practice.

Your lack of vocabulary aside, you use the less than optimal conversation as a jumping point, dragging your father back into language lessons.
You're pretty sure by the end that you can actually talk to people.

People people, not just your family. People who will laugh at you if you mess things up.
Maybe you should work in some practice not hurting people, just in case.

Weaving needs to be improved as well. Still want to try infusing mana into our silk to see if we can do something with it, but lets wait for the shell to harden before that.

Enchanting stuff has been attempted already. We suck at it because we can't produce mana and we're not very much educated in magic overall. (innate elemental control doesn't count)

The "connection" stuff would be spiritual and innate control. We do have earth magic, although it's heavily unpracticed. However the ideas for enchanting were something with fire, and we don't have any wizarding skills in that at all, only innate stuff.

Your family is already starting to drift out into the village- The brothers have less drifted than escaped, making a beeline for the woods.
Sara and your father have excused themselves to practice magic, so something will be exploding shortly.

Your mother has disappeared. Aria took her spear and headed out. Maybe to train, maybe to sign up.
Really, you're expecting her to be the next one gone after you.

Sheszka has been cooped up for long enough, really.
It takes a bit of effort- and a bit of argument- but you convince the wolf to head out without you.

Really, you just asked her to hunt in the end- pack mentality, maybe? She's more eager to follow orders than she is to take a day off.

Nin refuses, but that's hardly a surprise.

You set yourself up for weaving, slowly working thread into cloth.

"You could have gone with them, yes."
"No I couldn't. Do you know how fast they are?"
"Sheszka turns into a giant wolf. You could have ridden her."
"What? Have you ever seen her run?"

Nin holds up an arm, flipping her wrist up and down.
"Her whole spine curves, then back again- I'd get thrown off in a second. Also, no seats."
"That is a skull."
"Yes, seats."

She's sitting next to you, and when the conversation breaks, she brings her hands to her mouth, blowing fine strands of silk into her fingerd, where she starts to gather them.

"That's weird."
"Whu-?"
"The silk, yes."

She purses her lips as she cuts off the flow, raising an eyebrow at you.
"My silk is weird."
"It comes out of your mouth."
"And you make clothing from your butt."
"Spinnerets. Not my butt-"
"Butt clothing."

"What are you wearing right now."
"Nooo- What if I grow a spider butt now? What if I'm infected?"
"That is not a thing."

She giggles, returning to her own work, and you lift a fine sheet of silk.
You can probably make something.

Sheszka deserves something special.
So you'll make something. Yourself.

You're not particularly good at it. But you are determined.

You trace patterns into the sheets of silk with your claws, enjoying the fact that they've hardened enough to slice things again.
Not that having knife hands is easy, but not having knife hands is a sort of liability, isn't it? What if a bear came in the door right now?
You'd be helpless.

Aside from your fangs and stabby legs and claws. And magic.
Actually, at this point bears aren't really a threat.

Nin is issued orders. You ignore the smarmy queen speech for the sake of needles and thread, and you set yourself to work.

At the end, you have a thickset shirt of silk, straps wrapping across it to keep it as tight or loose as needed. Even a few bands on the sleeves, to keep them pulled beneath her gauntlets should she need it.
You work a little longer, trimming excess away, fixing up seams.

It's almost leaving you with a headache. You don't know how Elle manages this.
Or a lot more than this, all things considered.

You're not sure what colours to dye it. It's not your spot of expertise, after all.
You fold the arms under, flattening it out and laying it next to you. You can be proud of your workmanship. It's allowed.

Now you just need other ways to spend your time.

>>38991683
Yes but we've been out of combat long enough it doesn't matter and he'll likely change it if people pressure him to without being a dick about it. Hes been trying to get some semblance of a working system and arguably that is the hardest part of quest making.

It's totally unnecessary and just leads to players arguing.

It's like... Why would you institute a mechanic that allows your players to kill your quest with stupidity? OH YEAH GUYS LET'S TURN IT UP TO NIGHTMARE MODE and then the quest ends because MC dies, or the quest doesn't end because the difficulty level has NO IMPACT.

It's either totally pointless and transparent, or a quest killing mechanic.

It's largely unnecessary and its main purpose is "turn it this way to end quest, turn it other way to make quest a cakewalk"

Work is good. Work keeps people sane.
Moving your hands, keeping yourself busy, ignoring the fact that you haven't hunted or done anything in days and you're starting to get all trembly but you can't leave the house right now because-
Hahaha!

You keep your silk moving, weaving sheets without end. Mindless busywork, that's the key. If you can just not think about it, it'll be okay.
Why did you think that.
You can't not think something once you've started thinking about it. It doesn't work! Idiot!

Distractions. Distractions- Perfect.
"Nin?"
"Mhm?"
"Have you thought about leaving?"
"Huh? I'm not going anywhere."

"Not me, yes? I mean- when we get to the elflands. Or the city. Are there places you want to see?"
"Oh."
She leans back, blushing slight, antennae bouncing as she shifts around.
"I'm not sure."
"No? You read a lot, yes?"

"Yeah. But some are legends. Or history. There's a whole desert south where there used to be cities."
"What happened?"
"It just... swallowed them up. Growing and growing- People said the gods abandoned them, but when when they were gone it kept getting bigger."
"Do you want to see that, then?"
"Only if we take a lot of water."
"I think that would be a given, yes."

Hmm. Nin is a moth. What about-
"So."
"Yes?"
"What about butterflies?"
"They're stupid."

"They're stupid and airheaded, and they have stupid colours and stupid powers and they fly like idiots."

"Don't have to."
"Uh- They're very different from moths, then?"

"Of course! They don't have powder, and they look dumb, and they wish they were as good as moths!"
"I see."

But Lyra, you eat bears on sight.
>>
>>38992336
Hey.
We only eat bears if they attack us.
Which they do on sight.
>>
>>38992336
They started it, yes.
>>
>>38992212
How on earth do those things find enough blood to survive in the arctic tundra? Do they feed on beached whales or something?

Monster chatter!

Writing!
>>
You repress something of a giggle at the puffed up fluffy insect, reaching out and snagging her arm when she goes to sit down with a huff.
"Hey-"

Her complaints die in her throat, replaced with a pleased little noise as you drag her into your 'lap', stroking her hair and antennae with slow, sure movements.
"NNnn-"

"Do not be like that, yes? If you want to dislike someone, do it after you've met them. And found a reason to dislike them."
"Mm. But moths and butterflies-"
"I am talking about Nin and other people, yes."

She leans back a little, her wings brushing against you, and you keep petting her, letting her guide your hands by turning her head.
She does like your attention focused on her antennae.
"I can try. Maybe."
"That's fine."

You stay close, moving your hands while you talk.
"Tell me about other monsters, then."
"Other monsters?"
"Well, ah- Who lives in your desert, yes?"

"Uh. Weird plant people. And fire people. And some kind of demon? They have horns. I think they're just lords. And spiders. And bigger spiders, but with claws? And a tail. There was a drawing. It looked sharp."
"Scorpions?"
"Yes! But they're arachne."
"Huh. And plant people and fire people?"
"The plant people grow flowers in their hair, I think. And they're sharp so other monsters won't eat them. And the fire people- I don't know what they are. The book said they wore fire, and danced in the desert sun."
"I have no idea. What else"

"In the oceans- There's so many, you know? People fish fish bodies and people who are fish and-"

You sit and chat for a long while, Nin excitedly spinning the stories she's read, trying to describe monsters without their names as best she can. Fantasy knowledge goes a ways to keeping you up to date, but really, there's so much you don't know.

It's growing dark when your friends arrive back, Sheszka in her wolf shape, dragging bears.
There isn't much breeze outside.
Maybe it's safe?

>Check your shell. It's probably done, right?
>Fire pit under the moonlight!
>You can probably dismantle a bear in the kitchen.
>Other (?)

I need to step out for a bit, voting ends at 10.
>>
>>38992890
>>You can probably dismantle a bear in the kitchen.

We should make a dress to cover our gigantic ass, and our legs so we can pretend to be a normal elf.
>>
>>38992890
>>Check your shell. It's probably done, right?

probably....

>Check your shell. It's probably done, right?
>Fire pit under the moonlight!
Sounds like a great idea.
>>
>>38992890
>>You can probably dismantle a bear in the kitchen.
BEARS HELL YEAH! I'm glad she thought of our preferences.
>>
>>38992890
>You can probably dismantle a bear in the kitchen.

Heh.
Cactus people. Probably seeking hugs.

> Put on the sun dress Elle made for us to keep the weather off
> Drape a blanket over the spider but for a long skirt
> Stone may be easy to clean, but for the love of god, butcher the bears outside
>>
>>38992890
>Check your shell. It's probably done, right?
>>Fire pit under the moonlight!
it's just like a camping trip in your back, like you never had as a kid in your old life.
>>
>>38992890
>Check your shell. It's probably done, right?
>Fire pit under the moonlight!
>>
>>38992974
It's ok, we can just fold a thin layer of stone over the bloody surface. And keep doing that every time we butcher an animal.

Eventually, the floor will have stone and blood rings like a tree and some future monster archeologist will have a hell of time figuring out what the hell happened there.
>>
>>38992890
>Fire pit under the moonlight!

Out door BBQ with the family. We should send someone to the tavern to order drinks for everyone. Mom wouldn't object to a barrel of light cider shared between us right? With our collective body mass getting drunk wouldn't be an option even if we tried.
>>
>>38992944
Yes. Because normal elves have eight eyes and chitinous arms.
>>
>>38992890
>>Check your shell. It's probably done, right?

I honestly wonder if there are going to be any bears left in the forest by the time we're done.
>>
>>38993099
And fangs, don't forget the fangs.
>>
>>38993099
Yeah, Lann clearly isn't expressing much of her Elven heritage.
>>
>>38993205
Anon, you're missing the joke. See, he's sarcastically pointing out traits that elves do not have, but since we've established they have fangs, you cannot put them there.

>>Fire pit under the moonlight!
then

we need gloves and a headband to go with the giant dress.

Kind of hope we get a moon shaped coloration or mark on our shell for being out in moonlight while its hardening.

No, elves are just gender dimorphic.

I think thats kind of a cop-out for a transformation, normally we do something noteworthy to earn changes.

Outside it is!

Back and writing!

It would... probably be for the best if you didn't slaughter animals weighing near a ton inside your sister's house.
If only so you didn't have to mop up all the blood.
And the smell.

An experimental prodding of your arm results in no dimpling- Your shell is still sensitive, but you are no longer in danger of being weirdly shaped by accident.
Which is good.

Your opt for some clothes with better coverage, pulling the summer dress Elle made for you over your head. No sleeves, but if you're going to be arm deep in a dead bear, that's a definite plus, right?

Even the light breeze outside tickles you ever so slightly.

Your friends are all smiles, helping where they can, reassuring themselves that their spot on your butt is still their own. Nin is quiet, though she can't keep a smile off her face.

Ezzy manages to pull herself from her torpor at the sharp scent of blood- rubbing her eyes and coiling higher as she tries to reassemble events in her brain.

"Mmm- was I... flying?"
"No? Aria put you on her head when I shed my shell, I think?"
"I don't remember."
"That is fine, yes? People tend to not remember sleeping."

She nods, mostly to herself. When you hand her a chunk of meat, she chews at it daintily, rather than slugging the entire cube back all at once.
She still finishes it easily, though.

You build yourself a cheery firepit, roasting bear as light dwindles- Your family arrives in twos, except for Elle.
Apparently she had her first day on the job. She's talking excitedly with Sara about the caravan set to arrive in town- Buying and selling and trading and bartering.
She's enjoying things other than sewing.
>>
>>38994114
Your brothers have apparently tied for the day, much to their mutual disappointment. Your father's hands are a flurry of motion as he talks to your mother, his face alight as he tries to describe magic to her.
Aria looks like a zombie, tearing free meat and devouring it steadily, rocking back and forth, as though she might pitch into sleep at any moment.

You look up, to the stars spinning slowly overhead.
They'll be different elsewhere, won't they? You can feel the slow burn of excitement building.
It won't be long now.
>>
>>38994156
>And I'll call it there for the day!
>Sorry for the sedate thread- We'll pick up monday, around 230-3PM EST

Thanks for running. You're a pretty fun QM.
