You are Giles, Master Thief, mediocre brother extraordinaire, and professional dancer.

Your job has taken another interesting turn, as you’ve now gone from the princess’s babysitter to kind-of party guest.

In one fell (and quite well executed) swoop you managed to gain Princess Laura’s favor, as well as the ire of just about every single man at this little gathering.

You’ve set a hard record to beat but the night is young, and by the time it’s through your earlier shenanigans will pale in comparison to what you have planned.

As close to your goal as you are now, you must remain vigilant. You know better than any other that all can come crumbling down upon a Devil’s whim.

You wave goodbye to Eleanor and Selene as Melissa drags you off.

“That was quick. What did the boys all jump on you as soon as I left?” You ask, picking up your pace so she doesn’t have to drag you.
“No, but they were circling. And looking…” She says.
“And it bothers you still? I thought you’d been at this for a while.” You say. You’ve caught up to her, but you can’t help but notice that she isn’t letting go of your hand.
“I have… but that doesn’t stop it from bothering me…” She puts a hand over her chest, like she’s trying her best to cover it. She’s making a valiant effort, but failing. After all her hands are small, and her chest is… not…

Bad Giles, no more of that.

You take the lead, occupying your eyes with the task of finding a good spot. Once you’ve found somewhere to dance, you step in front of Melissa. “Lady Disiera, would you honor me with a dance?” You bow lightly and ask.

Melissa lets out a light giggle as she takes her position. “Goof.” She says.

“So why do you let these things bother you?” You ask as you begin to step in time to the music.

“I don’t let them bother me. It just happens sometimes…” She says.
You simply stare at her and wait for her to continue.
“Oh, fine then. Their eyes make my skin crawl. Every last one of these pricks only wants one of two things from me: my money, or my… my body. It doesn’t bother me so much as it disgusts me. If it was an option, I’d avoid these things entirely. In fact, I usually do. I only came to this one because Laura insisted.” Melissa says. She looks at least a little relieved to have all of that off of her chest.

“It worked out well in the end though, didn’t it?” You ask.
“I guess it did.” She says, looking up into your eyes with a soft smile. Then she sees something, and the nice expression is replaced by a look of annoyance. “You got taller than me.”

Really? She decided to put an end to your little moment for that? “I was always taller than you.” You say.
“You were not! It was always Klaus, then me, then you.” She says.
“Why is that such a big deal?”
“Why is it not? Height was like… the only thing I had over you. Now I don’t even have that!” She says.

I just thought of a potentially important question about the setting mechanics. What are the effects of someone who isn't a Devil attempting to use a name that's not their own, or to disguise their physical appearance?

Because given what was implied about Marcellus last thread, the answer to this question could matter quite a bit.
>>
>>38989622
You can't introduce yourself with a false name. It's actually impossible.
>>
“Well, you’re richer than I am, you have more friends than I do, your hair is much nicer than mine, and if that’s not enough you have much larger breasts than I do.” You say, holding up a hand and ticking these things off as you say them.

Melissa blushes. “I have ni- What do you- of course I-“ She tries to start her sentence but keeps getting side tracked. Eventually she sighs. “I don’t even know where to begin questioning this…” She says.

“Why not at the beginning?” You say.
“Okay, first one then. Am I really, truly richer than you are?” She asks.
“Well… probably not. Though I couldn’t say for sure since I don’t quite know how well the business is going…” You say.
“Uh-huh. And how much of this palace could you buy if you wanted it?” She asks
“Ummm… You see… Probably about… all of it.” You say finally.
Melissa sighs. “Though you’re right about my hair, I do pride myself in taking good care of it. And I’m not even going to mention that last one.” She says.

>[1/2]
>>
“Seems you missed one.” You say.
“I did?” She says
“Friends Melissa. You must have at least a few.” You say.
“Well, maybe… There’s Laura… And…” She trails off.

“Is… is that it?”
“Maybe…” She says
“What about that Lester fellow, or Father Pitre, the guy from your ship?” You say.
“Business acquaintances and family…” She says.
“Okay. Well, at least you’ve got nicer hair, and larger-“ You say, but Melissa cuts you off by stomping on your foot.

You joke about this, but it does kind of worry you. Is Laura really the only person she considers a friend?

“Do you really have no friends other than Laura?” You ask.
“And you.” She says.
“Don’t dodge the question.” You say flatly.
Melissa looks annoyed by your persistence. “I keep to myself…” She says.
“Melissa” You say.
“No, alright? I probably wouldn’t even be friends with Laura if she hadn’t been so insistent.” She says.
“She insisted?” You ask
“Yes. She just kind of showed up at the manor one day. Apparently I fascinated her and she insisted that we be friends.” Melissa says.

Laura did say something to that effect.
“But like I was saying, I keep to myself. Running one of the largest merchant companies on the Degran sea takes up a lot of my time. Not to mention my side hobby of trying to track down a Master Thief.” She says.

“Well, now that you’ve found him maybe you’ll have some time for yourself.” You say.
Melissa smiles knowingly, and switches to speaking in Alka-habran. “So you are one of them.” She says.

Oh shit. You hadn’t meant to say that.

Yeah, I agree with you but we should take Laura too. Screw fate's chosen she doesn't have to marry if she doesn't want to.
>>
>>38990439
You really want to kidnap a 6 year old princess? That's an awful idea
>>
“So when did the two of you become friends?” You ask.
Melissa’s smile widens, and then she switches back to a more neutral expression. You pretty much just confirmed her suspicions, but you’re okay with that. If you thought that she might have sold you out, you’d’ve grabbed the crown and left a long time ago.

“It was only a short while after… after I started up the business.” She says. You know that ‘started up the business’ wasn’t her first choice of words there, but you let her continue. “I’ll admit that I was feeling a bit lonely, and Laura had been locked up for a while due to some sickness or something. I was a bit put off by suddenly having a Princess in my house, but she was good with the kids and Father Pitre liked her well enough…”

Melissa talks for a while about her friendship with Laura. Laura didn’t stay long at Melissa’s manor, but they continued to write to each other after she left. Laura has been back to visit Melissa a few times since then, though this is her first time visiting the palace itself.

“You’ve been friends for 4 years and you’ve never once come to visit her?” You ask.
“I’m always busy, and Laura insists that she come to me. Something about taking a break from Palace life.” She says
“Well if I had to be around people like this as often as she probably does, I’d need to take breaks every now and again too.” You say.
Melissa laughs.

“So how is the old lug doing?” You ask.
“Oh, you know how he is. There are more kids at my manor now than there ever were at the old chapel, so he’s pretty busy. But none of them cause even half as much trouble as the two of you did, which seems to please him.” Melissa says.

“You think he’ll be happy to see me?” You ask.
“Of course. And I’m sure he’ll express that happiness once he’s finished crushing your ribcage.” She says in a happy manner that sends chills down your spine.

“You sound like you’re looking forward to that…” You say.
“Absolutely! Why do you think I haven’t tried to do you in myself?” She says.

You’re in the process of trying to laugh that off when you hear the announcer announce that food is now being served.

“Wonderful! I’m starving-“ She stops dancing and steps up to peck you on the cheek. “-this was fun. Thank you Giles.” She says, and then she walks away.

You place a hand on your cheek as you watch Melissa walk away. That’s the second time today that’s happened, you hope it’s not some sort of trend…

Once she’s gone, you shake your head and walk off to find Selene. You do still have a job after all. When Melissa dragged you off, you had to leave her with Dalen and Eleanor at the entrance. Chances are that they’re since moved off somewhere else.

You notice that the crowd around Laura has started to peter out, maybe you can bring Selene over there once you find her.

It takes a few minutes, as the hall is starting to fill up, but you do find them. Dalen, Eleanor and Selene are sitting at a table with an eastern looking fellow. From what you can see, Dalen is regaling Selene with tales of his adventures with Laura.

Everyone seems pretty into his story, so you just take a seat next to/behind Eleanor.

“-and then, just when it looked like I was lunch… WHAM! An arrow comes out of nowhere and puts a big hole in the dragon’s head!” Dalen says.
Selene listens in awe, and Eleanor giggles at Dalen’s enthusiasm.

Dalen smacks a hand against the table. “then the dragon teetered and hit the floor, and we were victorious!”

Selene claps.

“Wonderful story.” You say.
“WAH!” Eleanor jumps in surprise. “Giles, when-“
“A few seconds ago.” You say.

“It looks like the crowd around Princess Laura is starting to thin. I was going to see if Selene wanted to go see her.” You say.

Selene looks around, unsure of what she wants to do. Looks like she’s pretty attached to Dalen if he could trump going to see Laura.

Dalen stands up and puts an end to her dilemma. “I’ll go too. I’ve been meaning to go and see that little tomboy since we got back.” He says.
“Allow me to accompany you as well.” The eastern man says as he stands up as well. “I don’t believe we’ve been introduced, I am Zen, Zen Kokutou.” He says. So he’s one of Honoue’s twin princes, huh? He looks a bit younger than you thought he would, but he seems like an honest fellow.

“I guess I’ll come too, if everyone else is going.” Eleanor says.
“Oh, don’t be shy now Eleanor. We know what you’re really after.” Dalen says.
Eleanor turns red and stutters. “Th-tha-that is not what I’m coming for you jerk!” She shouts.

You all leave the table as everyone but Eleanor laughs.

Laura looks over from the conversation she’s having as you approach. Her eyes light up as she recognizes the faces. “Dalen! Zen! Selene! Eleanor! Giles!” She says, hugging each person in turn. No one bats an eye until she gets to you. Seems like the crowd is still pretty pissed about earlier.

“It is good to see you two again.” Marcellus says.
“Likewise Marcellus.” Zen says.
“What are you being so formal for?” Dalen says, giving Marcellus a noogie

>[1/2]
>>
“What brings you all over here?” Laura asks.
“Well, Zen and I haven’t seen you since we got back so we decided we’d come and intrude.” Dalen says.

And intrude we have. It doesn’t look like anyone is too pleased that your group is monopolizing her attention. Though neither Dalen or Zen seem to care.

The conversation takes off into things like what everyone’s plans are now that they’re back, whether Zen thinks he can beat his brother and get the throne, and how cool Selene thinks everyone is.

It’s during that last topic that you notice Eleanor has been strangely quiet. You look over to see her trying her hardest not to look at Marcellus and blushing like a schoolgirl…

You take a step to the side to get closer to Eleanor, then you gently nudge her with you elbow.
“Just go ask him.” You say.
“Wh-wha- ask him what?” Eleanor asks.
You raise an eyebrow, and choose not to elaborate. Instead you place a hand firmly between her shoulder blades.

Eleanor looks at you in shock.
You shove her forward before she can say anything. Her red dress flows behind her as she ungracefully stumbles up to Marcellus.

“Oh, Eleanor. What’s up?” Marcellus asks.
“Uuuuuuuuuuuhmmmmmmmm… Could I… Could I talk to you for a moment?” Eleanor asks.
The two of them head off beyond the crowd where you can’t see them. She’ll be fine, he’d have to have his head up his own ass to refuse a pretty girl like her.

You look back to the group in time to see Dalen give you a subtle thumbs up. Looks like he saw your little act and he approves.

“So are the two of you related or something?” You ask Dalen.
“Me ‘n Ellie? No. Her father was my teacher, so I’ve known her since she was just a little thing. When her old man bit the dust, I promised him I’d look after his family.” Dalen says.

“I know this seems like a touchy subject, but how did he die?” You ask.
Dalen looks you over. “Well, you two seem to be friends… just don’t tell her or Ced that I told you, okay?”
“Gotcha.”
“Her old man took an axe from a Delemuran general to save the King’s life. It wasn’t pretty, and it wasn’t quick, but the King’s repaid that debt tenfold since then.” He says.

So he died during the war between Laust and Delemur, the country across the northern sea. That was about… a decade ago? Maybe a little more.

“What are you guys talking about?” Laura asks, having taken a sudden interest in your hushed tones.
Dalen looks like he’s been caught red handed doing something he shouldn’t. Which isn’t entirely false, but his poker face is terrible.

“We were actually just wondering if you had seen your parents yet. Their arrival was announced just before Sir Dalen’s was.” You say.
“No, not yet. They’ve been as busy as I have, though I have no doubt that they’ll try to rope me into something sooner or later…” She says.
“Well, just let me know if you need someone to make a scene so you can escape.” Dalen says.

Almost on cue, Queen Frederica approaches. “Hello everyone, you all look well this evening.” She says.
“Hello mother.” Laura says. The Queen doesn’t notice her annoyance, but you do. Maybe it’s because you were privy to what she just said.
“Good evening, Queen Frederica.” You say, as everyone else greets the queen as well.
“Oh, hello. I hadn’t thought you’d be coming to this party.” She says.
“Lady Desiera invited him.” Laura says.
“Ah, I had heard that the two of you grew up together.” She says, and then she turns her attention back to Laura. “Laura, come with me. There is someone your Father and I would like you to speak with.” Then she leaves.

Laura looks at you sadly, then follows.
“It’s probably Roderick. It’s always Roderick.” Dalen says.

“Always? Has this been going on long?” You ask.
“It had been for a while before we all left to go dragon slaying. By noble standards, Laura is getting old. Most girls her age are married by now, especially if they happen to be royalty.” Dalen says.
“Is there a reason why she hasn’t wed?” You ask.
“Oh there are thousands of reasons. The biggest among them would probably be how hung up she is on that asshole…” He says.
“That asshole wouldn’t happen to be named Salem, would he?” You say.
“How’d you know about him?” Dalen asks.
“Laura told me.” You say,
“Well now, she must like you if she told you about Salem. I’d leave that alone though. The sooner she forgets his stupid face and moves on the better it’ll be for all of us…” Dalen says. He’s mad about this, did something happen between him and Laura’s old guardian? “But that’s enough of that. Just thinking about that guy pisses me off.”

You feel something tugging at your sleeve. Looking down, you see Selene. “Dinner?” You ask.
Selene nods.
Dalen laughs. “Looks like Laura’s not the only one who likes you, buddy.” He slaps you hard on the back. “I’ll leave you to that. Zen and I are gonna go see if we can save us a princess.” He walks away.
“It was a pleasure meeting you.” Zen says.
“The pleasure was all mine.” You say.
Zen smiles and bows politely before going after Dalen.

“Alright, let’s go get you fed” you say.

You look for an empty table, but it doesn’t look like there is one. Failing that, you try to spot Melissa. Also a failure…

“Giles! Giles! There!” Selene says, tugging on your shirt and pointing towards a table with a few empty seats.
Might as well, it’s not like it’s any worse than the other tables.

It isn’t until you sit down that you notice why she was so excited. “Hello there Selene, and you… James?” Sitting next to Selene is Prince Louis, and next to him is a blond woman you haven’t met yet.
“Giles.” You say.
“Yes, Giles. Sorry, I’m forgetful sometimes.”
“You remember my name.” Selene says.
“That’s because you’re my adorable little cousin.” Louis says, patting Selene’s head.

Selene then begins to ignore you all and tear into her food like it called her mother a whore, leaving you basically alone with Louis.

“Sorry, I don’t believe we’ve been introduced.” You say to the blond woman sitting next to Louis. They’re both wearing clothing in the same dullish purple, so you can at least assume that they came together.

“Hmm? Oh! Sorry, Giles this is my wife Louise Harthright.” He says.
“Aww, I wanted to see how long it would take him to notice.” She says, pouting playfully before reaching across the table. “Like he said, Louise Harthright.”
“Giles” you respond, taking her hand lightly and shaking it. “So is the kid’s name going to be Louella, or maybe just Lou?” You say.
Louise laughs, Louis does not. “Please don’t talk about kids.” He says.
“Yes, I know our names are similar. But I was thinking of something more regal for our first child.” Louise says.
Louis groans. It’s odd to see him act so unprincely. But then again, you’ve never seen Laura act like a princess, and Selene is… already done eating. It’s been like 30 seconds.

“I wanted to thank you for the save the other day, for both myself and Laura.” You say.
Louis looks thankful to not be talking about kids anymore. “Yes, well someone has to keep that guy in line. He’s nice enough to me, but that’s because I have power. He treats everyone who’s below him the way he treats you. Mercutius knows, but he wants to marry his daughter off to him regardless. It wouldn’t surprise me if that’s what he was doing right now…”

“Actually…” You say.
Louis groans again. “I’d like to help this time, but what I pulled last time won’t work again. I know that he won’t do anything crazy while I’m here, but that’ll change very quickly the second I leave the palace.” Louis says.

“So if he isn’t a jerk to you, why do you hate the guy so much?”
“That’s just it. He isn’t a jerk to me, but that’s just because I’m important. One of the first things that my father taught me about being a king is to judge people not by how they treat you, but by how they treat those beneath them. It isn’t just Roderick, you can pick out a lot of two-faced people that way.” He says proudly.

“Sounds like you have a lot of respect for your father.” You say.
“He is a great man. I can only hope to be half the man he is when it comes time for me to take the throne.” Louis says.
Louise kisses him on the cheek. “I’m sure you will be dear.” She says.

“Speaking of Harth, how are things going over there?” You ask.
“Difficult? Belgir was dangerously close to the border we share with Honoue, so there was a lot of tension there…” Louis goes off on a tangent about the political difficulties of ravaging dragons, while you listen and eat.

Ravaging dragons don’t show up too often, but they’re always trouble. Most dragons don’t get incredibly large, but when they do, they get territorial. Belgir was one such dragon, and he claimed half of Honoue as his territory.

By the time Louis is done talking, you find yourself utterly bored of politics. You didn’t know that dragons could be a boring subject…

You decide to take your leave. Though Selene is content to stay with her cousin. Taking a look around, it looks like the party is winding down a bit. It’s not as crowded, though the dancing is continuing.

Through the (now fairly sparse) crowd, you can see a few of your friends. Eleanor is off at an empty table with her head down, Melissa is speaking with that older gentleman from earlier, and Laura is with Dalen and Zen.

“I take it things didn’t go well?” You ask.
“I got rejected…” She says.
“I’m sorry.” You say.
“Not your fault. I don’t think he was ever interested. It was still fun to hope though…” She says, putting her head back down.

“Want me to go beat him up for you?” You say.
Eleanor laughs a little. “No, I doubt you could take him on. He’s a champion duelist, remember?”
“Yeah, but dueling is all 1-on-1. I’m sure I could convince Cedric or maybe Dalen to help me out.” You say.
Eleanor laughs a little more and raises her head. “They probably would too…” She says, wiping her eyes.

Well, she seems to be in a better mood now at least. Time to-

“Well, it’s his loss!” You say, grabbing her hand and pulling her to her feet.
“Giles what-“
“I’m going to have a serious talk with Marcellus about his priorities and possibly his sexual orientation for turning down a pretty girl like you. Until then, his loss is my gain.” You say.
“But I-“
You put a finger over her mouth. “-still have to dance with someone. And who better than the envy of the entire party?” You say.
Eleanor laughs. “Envy of the entire party? You?” She asks as you lead her off to the dance floor.
“Oh yes. You weren’t there for it, but I got to steal Lady Laura’s first dance in front of a rather large crowd of other men who were all vying for it.” You say.
“How mad were they?” She asks.
“Incredibly. It was glorious, Eleanor. You should’ve seen it.” You say.

Eleanor laughs as the two of you take your positions. It’s odd how you’ve actually started to enjoy this. Maybe you should come to these sorts of events more often.

“You know, I’ve actually found this whole affair quite a bit of fun, despite my expectations.” You say, getting into step with Eleanor.

“I didn’t take you for the dancing and mingling type.” Eleanor says.
“Oh, I’m not. The dancing is enjoyable, but then so is any reason to be this close to a pretty girl for so long.” You say, prompting a blush from Eleanor.
“You like being the center of attention then?” She says.
“Bingo. At events like this one, there are so many ways to go about it.”
“You’re weird.” She says.
“Guilty as charged.”

The rest of the dance is spent talking about the various different stories she could tell Cedric to make him jealous, and what you plan on doing if you can’t stay in the Palace. But eventually, the music stops.

Eleanor pouts. “Aww, already?” She asks.
“Don’t look too disappointed.” You say.
“I had fun. It was a nice change from moping about over being rejected.” Eleanor smiles, and then she puts an arm over your neck and gets on her tip-toes to kiss you on the cheek. “Thank you for this… I know you didn’t have to-“

>>

Somehow I don't think the girl in question will be too impressed at being taken away from her mother, who she still loves, her friends, her castle and her privileged lifestyle to live in an orphanage.

I'd also rather ask before trying to drag her off on adventures, she's a six year old pampered princess who is an awesome six year old but still.

I wouldn't mind asking her if she wants to leave if we get the chance though.

You decide to go and find Selene, a difficult task because you can’t just look for her head in the crowd.

But find her you do, and you find Laura at the same time. They’re alone over at one of the tables. Laura’s in a chair, and Selene is sitting in her lap while Laura strokes her hair.

“Hey.” You say.
“Oh, hello Giles.” She says. Selene says nothing. When you sit down, you notice why.
Selene is asleep.
“The little one tire herself out?” You ask.
Laura smiles, looking every bit as tired as you’d expect. “Yes, today was an exciting day for her.” She says
“You look tired too.” You say.
“Well, that… yes. I am tired. Today was difficult, but no more than I thought it would be. How are you holding up?” She asks.

“I had a lot more fun tonight than I expected. Thanks, in part, to you.” You say.
“Glad I could help. Have you seen Marcellus around? It is about time for us to be going.” Laura says.
“Can’t say I have. But when you find him, could you tell him he’s an asshole?” You say.
“I will.” Laura says, picking up Selene so she can stand up. “Until tomorrow, Giles.” She says, walking off to go find Marcellus.

And you’re alone again.

Funny how you’ve gotten so used to being around people in the last few days that it now feels strange to be alone…

“Hey therrrrrre shady-man.” Melissa stumbles into the chair next to yours.
“What- Melissa? Have you been drinking?” You ask.
Melissa laughs at you. “Meeeeeeeee? Noooo…”
“Melissa”
“Yes…” She says, looking like a child who’s been caught lying.
“What do you want?” You ask.
“I came to wish you good luck” She says.
“Sarcasm?” You ask.
“No. You will always be you. I’ll never try to make you stop being you. Just promise me one thing…”
“What’s that?” You ask.

“Promise me you’ll be careful? I don’t want to go back home and find out a month down the road that someone caught you and had you executed. Okay?” She asks.
“Fine…” You say.
“That didn’t sound genuine, but I’ll take it.” She says, standing back up and wobbling a bit. “But I have to go sleep now. I’ll see you again… maybe.” She says.
You stand up to see her off, and she falls into you. “You sure you’re okay?”
Melissa looks straight into your eyes, and then kisses you right on the mouth.

It’s a few seconds before she pulls away, staring at you in disbelief. “G-goodnight!” She pulls away quickly and makes a beeline for the door.

"What the hell...?" You mutter as you watch her go.

And you’re alone again…

You walk over to the exit. It has been a strange few days, and you’ll admit that you haven’t really been yourself. Your cover got a little bit out of control.

But it was fun while it lasted…

Out in the hall, you make a left, and then a right, and then head into the central stairway.

Inside, you pull a thin strip of fabric out of your pant leg and give it a whip. Your cloak comes out of the strange spatial phenomenon stitched into a false seam, and you throw it over yourself with a flourish. Quickly setting it into place, you clasp it and start pulling out your other accessories.

You switch out your hat, pull out a few more knives to hide, and finally out comes your cane. It’s a simple, long piece of solid steel with a fist sized steel bulb on the end. Hidden under a wooden nub at its bottom is a pointed tip. To the untrained eye, it looks harmless, but you’ve skewered and bludgeoned more people than you care to count with it.

Quietly, you make your way up the stairs. As you expected, there are guards posted on each floor. But they are all guarding against outward intruders, so they don’t even glance your way as you go by.

It takes a few minutes to reach the top, but finally you do.

At the top is the crown. The Golden Crown of Laust; your Golden Crown of Laust.

You flick your king of diamonds out of your sleeve. This is it.

>Taking out your calling card prior to acquiring your target
I'm no master thief, but that's a bit dumb of Giles.

With one hand you take the crown off of its pedestal. It’s a heavy thing, but solid gold is like that.
The other hand gingerly places your final card on the cushion where the crown sat.
You admire the crown for a moment more, before stowing in the false seam under your cloak.

It is done. Time to make your escape.

You head back down the stairs to the first floor, as you planned. Making your way around the hallways is a simple endeavour, and before very long at all you find yourself back on the top floor in front of the king and queen’s bedroom.

But something is wrong.

The door is open.

Peering inside, you see something that you wouldn’t have expected to find in a million years.

The King and Queen are dead. Standing on their bed over their bloody corpses is a man cloaked in black.

He sees you, and with a bloody sword in his hand he runs towards you.

You crack your cane across the ground, knocking the wooden tip off of it.

The cloaked man brings his sword around in a deadly arc, and if you were still there you would probably be dead. But you were not there; instead you twirled to the left side and cracked him across the back of his head with the length of your cane.

The cloaked man grunts and stumbles as he tries to regain his balance. Your hit seems to have disoriented him, but he’s still ready to go.

He drops low and runs at you again. He speaks something, and you can feel magic in his blade as it seems to become one with the shadows of the hall.

His sword is black, and you can barely see it in the darkness of the hallway. But you can see his hands.

He gets in close and attempts to slash at you diagonally from the bottom up. But before he can finish winding back, you meet his charge with your own. He gasps in surprise as the space where his head is about to be becomes occupied with your knee, and then he reels back as it connects.

You’re pretty sure he lost a few teeth to that one.

The cloaked man removes the mask obscuring his face and spits out blood. You don’t recognize his face…

He continues to stagger back a few feet before he finds his back against the wall. He peeks lieft and right, looking for a way out.

You aren’t letting him out of this one, and he seems aware of that as he takes up his stance.

Now it’s your turn.

If he’s not going to come to you again, you’ll just have to bring the fight to him.

You run in and lunge at his heart with the tip of your cane. He parries it, and the two of you cross weapons a few times while you search for an opportunity.

And you find it.

It isn’t a break in his guard, at least it’s not one he’s aware of. You swat his sword to his left side and twirl into the gap, letting your cloak flare up so you can strike from underneath it.

The cloaked man never sees it coming. As his life’s blood drains from his neck, you wonder if he’ll ever realize what just happened to him.

“Splendid performance, Master Giles.” A familiar voice comes from behind you.

You whirl around to face it, and plant the tip of your cane at its neck. “Cassandra”

“I was curious as to how you’d fare against a brother of the night. You’ve exceeded my expectations.” Cassandra says.
“What the hell is going on, did you plan this?” You demand.
“I don’t believe that you have time to be asking these questions, Master Giles. The Darkest Night has fallen upon us, and Rog returns for his vengeance against Selene.” Cassandra says, backing away from your weapon.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“Only trickery could defeat Rog the first time. And it will take a trickster to do it again.” Cassandra says. And then she vanishes. No turning a corner and disappearing, she vanishes right before your eyes.

You’re pretty sure you know what she meant. This has to do with Selene’s dream. ‘Rog has returned’, she doesn’t mean the dragon, she means the man with black breath: Rog’s breath.

You need to make your escape… But can you really leave her to die?

Inb4 Selene truly isn't a Laust, and is actually descended from the first Selene.
>>
>>38999890
Different Selene.

The historical Princess Selene basically tricked the great dragon Rog into killing himself by daring him to do stuff like fly around the world as fast as he could.

The little girl is named after that Princess Selene.
>>
>>38999890
It's the Selene from the story. From that statement it seems possible that our Selene has some connection to the legendary one.
>>
>>38999890
There was a hero princess, a long time ago, who fucked up a dragon that destroyed her kingdom. Name was Selene.
>>
>>38999914
If I remember correctly the dragon slaying princess was actually called Selena. But Selene was very likely named after her.
My own guess would be reincarnation, though a descent would be possible. Maybe even both.
>>
“And by the way. You’ll be wanting to get out of the Palace when you’re done. You won’t find the guard is very friendly right now.” Cassandra’s voice echoes softly through the hall.

A mad smile creeps across your face. The guards are nothing to a Master Thief. Walls are nothing to a Master Thief. If you’ll be stealing more than you bargained for tonight, then so be it.

You run silently to where Selene’s room is and pick open the door.

Nothing…

No, she was with Laura and Marcellus in her dream. Maybe this is happening in her room as well? It won’t hurt to try.

You continue on to Laura’s room, and find that the door is open. No, it’s gone. But you hear nothing from inside. As you get closer, you understand why. Someone has cast a spell of Silence on the room…

As you enter the field, you can hear the struggle going on inside. Marcellus and Laura are locked in combat with more of those cloaked men.

Closer to you, there is a very big man. He isn’t cloaked, but he is armored. In one hand he has an axe, and in the other… He has Selene…

He exhales a black breath as he brings his axe back to strike.

He doesn’t seem to be aware of you…

The man raises his axe, and you move in.

You won’t be able to stop him from swinging if you go for a killing blow, and even if you could there’s no guarantee that you could get through his armor.

The hand with the axe is about to become too mobile to hit, but the other hand is an easy target…
So you slam your cane into his wrist as deep as it can go.

The big man drops Selene and grunts in pain, pulling his arm away and your cane with it.

He might have your cane now, but the arm it’s in is as good as useless, and you are far from disarmed.

The man grits his teeth and roars, letting out a torrent of black smoke. Then he runs at you, axe in the air ready to strike.

You get ready to defend yourself against the swing that’s coming. The man comes closer, and when you expect the swing to come…

Right towards Selene. You were never his target…

He closes the extra distance quickly, and he’s ready to strike.

Three is the most daggers you have ever thrown at once with anything resembling accuracy, but two is a good comfort zone.

With a knife in each hand, you swing and release. One dagger sails through the air towards the back of his knee, the other aims for his axe hand.

You hit the back of his knee, and he stumbles in his charge. You miss the hand, but that was a dubious target to begin with.

His charge stunted momentarily, you have the time you need to reposition yourself between him and his target. It’s only a few feet of space, but it’s all you need.

Unable to use his axe properly in quarters this close, he attempts to strike you with the bottom of its haft while his injured hand winds back for a punch.

The axe haft strikes the empty air under your cloak as you dodge it, and you deflect his punch with your right hand.

Then you grab a hold of your cane, still lodged in his arm, and pull. The man screams as it loosens, and you kick him as hard as you can in the ribs to pull it free.

He stumbles back, but you’re already on top of him, cane in hand. You give it a quick twirl to switch your grip on it, and crack him across the face with the steel ball at its head.

He falls to the floor on his back, his black breath coming in ragged gasps. You place the tip of your cane on his chest, at a separation in his armor, and you push. He lets out one final, black gasp as your cane pierces his heart.

You whip your cane outwards and twirl it as you stand up, then you place the tip on the ground.

The other fights have finished, and there are 4-5 dead men in black cloaks lying on the ground.

Selene is on the floor bawling uncontrollably, and Laura is trying to console her

“Giles… you-“ Marcellus says, staring at you awestricken.

“Not now. We need to get out of here.” You say.

Selene is terrified, Laura looks frightened, the only one keeping their cool here is Marcellus, and even he looks nervous.

“How do you suggest we do that?” Marcellus asks.
“There’s a secret path out in the baseme-“ You say
“I know that path, Mother showed it to me. How do you know about it?” Laura asks.
“Trade secret” You say, offering Laura your hand.
Laura takes it reluctantly. “And just what IS your trade?”
You pull her to her feet, and she picks up Selene. “A secret.” You say with a wink.

“We need to inform the guard about this” Marcellus says.
“I would agree with you normally but right now…” You think about what Cassandra said. She could have been lying, she could have been doing any number of things. “… the guards are not our friends right now.” You say.

Marcellus’s eyes narrow, but he eventually agrees to your plan.

After making sure that everyone (mostly Selene) could be quiet, the four of you sneak out to the central stair.

There isn’t much movement right now, but as soon as someone discovers the mess in the King and Queen’s room, that is going to change very quickly. You need to be out of here before then.

You lead the way down the stairs and through the dungeons into the Vaults. But the door to the Vaults is guarded. Last time you used a simple distraction, that may not work here…

You reach into your cloak… you know you’ve got one in here somewhere…

Ah! There it is.

“Giles, is that-“ Laura whispers.
You put a finger up to your lips and set about activating the enchantment. You enchanted a few of these crystalline knives with ‘dark fog’ before you even got to Analask. Too risky to enchant them in the Palace or even in the city, as a trained mage can sense these things. Like how Laura knew immediately when you pulled the dagger out of your cloak, and to a lesser degree how you knew that the cloaked man had activated an enchantment on his sword.

“Dark Fog” You whisper, and the crystal dagger darkens. You count to three and throw it towards the door, where it strikes, bounces off, and releases a pitch black smoke through the entryway.

You grab Laura by the hand and make a break for the entrance, paying no mind to the (now blinded) guards.

If you remember correctly, the secret stair was… this way. All the way at the back of the vaults. As you run you make a quick check to ensure that everyone is still with you.

You’ve still got Laura by the hand, and she is still carrying Selene, while Marcellus trails just behind.

You get to the room where the entrance should be, and you quickly pick the lock. Stepping in, you find…

It’s damn well empty.

No, the door has to be here. It was inset last time, maybe there’s a hidden switch.

Nothing in the room is too obvious, but the brickwork on the walls is loose. You set about tapping the bricks until one of them gives, and the wall where the door was sinks into the floor, revealing your exit.

You quickly lock the door you came in through, and then unlock the secret exit.

Everyone gets in, and you close the door behind you. Aaaand it’s pitch dark.

“Blinding Flash” Laura says, and then you can see again. In her hand is an arrow with its head lit up as bright as day. You didn’t even register this, but she has her bow on her as well.

You quickly search the wall around the doorway for another switch. You figure that there must be a way to hide the secret exit once you’re through. Bingo, your hand finds another piece of brickwork that depresses under your touch, and you hear the stone wall rise back up on the other side of the door.

“Do you know where this lets out?” You ask.
“No… I didn’t even really know where the switch was, how did you find it?” Laura asks.
Luck. That was all luck. “Not important, for now we should continue making our escape.” You say, heading down the stairs.

“Giles tell us what’s going on.” Laura says. She looks exhausted, and you don’t blame her.

“Marcellus, take Selene and go further down the stairs. I have to tell Laura something.” You say. Laura needs to know about this, but you’d rather not tell Selene when she’s this tired and stressed.

Laura gives Marcellus her glowing arrow. “Do as he says… I think I know what he wants to say…” She says.

Marcellus takes the arrow and Selene from Laura, and heads further down. The stairway darkens with each step further he goes.

“The King and Queen are dead.” You say once you think that Marcellus is out of earshot.
Laura breathes deeply. “I thought it might be that… when you told Selene to…” She stops as a sob takes her. “Oh gods, mother and father are…” She starts crying openly.

You feel around in the dark until your hand reaches her shoulder, and you pull her in close.

You’re no stranger to consoling those who’ve lost their parents. Whether you’re a princess or a street rat, it’s always the same.

This was supposed to be a simple heist. Now it’s starting to feel like you’ve bitten off more than you can chew. But this should be nothing for a Master Thief…

At least, you hope so…
