The dreams come again, vivid and clear in the silence of your sleeping mind. You step through the darkness, its shades clouding your sight, blinding you. You feel heat and then see a glow, a fire burning on a table; you feel the breath of another on your neck and on your shoulder, and you feel nothing but safety at its caress. The darkness clouds in and you hold a chalice of deep red wine in your hand; you drink, and the bitter, cool liquid flows down your throat, slaking your thirst. You feel the liquid thicken and the taste change: coppery and metallic. You drink more, the taste intoxicating you, igniting a craving in you which you cannot deny and what is more, you do not wish to. You see yourself, tall and lean, blood covering your mouth and dripping down your chest: your eyes are red with it.

You wake with a shout and sit upright, heart racing in your chest. The cool concrete of your bed lies beneath you: a comforting solidity. You rub your eyes with your hand and sigh quietly before looking around the room. The pale light of the very early morning brightens the room into little more than a crepuscular dimness, but you see clearly the spartan chamber of metal and concrete, the only ornamentation a diptych of ebony statuettes: the God-Emperor and Blessed Sanguinius; burnt out candle-stubs sit beside them.

You swing your legs off of the concrete slab, folding your thin blanket and setting it at the foot of your bed. Your mind is heavy and weary, and the sight of yourself, chest and mouth covered in crimson, red eyes glowing with a devilish light, haunts you. Your eyes fall on the small statuettes, dim and shadowed in the pale light, the ebony of the wood almost glowing.

Rising from the bed, you unfold your lean seven foot frame and take the few steps needed to cross to them and kneel before them. Close beside is a small and neat pile of slender candles and the matches with which to light them. You allow your eyes to linger on them for a moment and then reach for one, setting it gently before the statuettes, among its burnt-out fellows, and strike a match, the orange glow startling in the dimness -- your mind flashes back to the fire which burns on the table in your dreams. You shake the remembrance off and hold the flame to the candle, watching the wick flare and burst into life.

A thin trail of smoke begins to rise from the ivory candle, and your eyes linger on it before running over the features of your father and his winged son; in the flickering light, they seem almost alive.
Steeling yourself, you turn your mind to the dreams which have haunted you for so many nights. The features are always the same: a fire on a table which does not scorch; soft breath on your skin, warm and comforting; and then a daemon, drinking blood like wine.

You have not spoken to anyone about these dreams; you are not weary, but you have begun to feel stretched and thin, distracted by the thoughts which plague you -- and the fears of their truth. You fear what others would say if you revealed your dreams to them.

Why have these dreams come to you? Why do they still come in the nights when all around you is still and dark? Is it a test of faith? A warning? Or are they simply dreams? Whose breath do you feel on your neck, warm like a lover’s?

You cannot say for certain.

“Emperor, who knows all things, hear my prayer.”

Your voice is loud and startling in the stillness of your room, and for a moment you fall silent.

“It is dark, and I am alone. My brothers have no aid to offer; they cannot fight the enemy of my own mind. If this is a message, or a warning, I cannot see its meaning. I would be of Iron Will, you said, at my forging, but my will I fear is not of Iron. Give me surcease, I beg, for these dreams harrow my waking thoughts, and I suffer for it.”

You fall silent once more, eyes on the bright orange flame flickering so bravely in the dim light.

“I know there lies a curse in my blood -- a curse of blood. I fear it, father -- I fear its power, its ability to change me from who I am to something I cannot be. For these other signs and portents father -- their meaning I cannot discern. Help me, father, I beg. Send me your aid for I am lost.”

The silence which follows the end of your prayer shocks you, but you stay still, eyes still watching the candle.

You reach out and pinch the candle’s wick, your words still ringing in your mind, the dream-images faded but still present behind them. In the hall outside you hear the sound of the fortress-monastery coming to life, and you know that it is time to put these thoughts aside as best you can.

The gold embroidery of the raw linen clothes you retrieve from your closet shines in the stronger light coming through the small window of your room. You allow your eyes to run over the intricate work before pulling on the breeches and tunic, belting it about your waist with a length of bare rope.

You feel like your hands are not your own for a moment, as if another is helping you prepare. You feel her breath on your neck once again, cool and soft, and the smell of mint.

The water in the basin by the window is cold and refreshing, and the shock of it chases the memory away. You steel yourself and turn to the door and open it, proceeding out into the small hallway, the rooms of the other veterans extending to your right and left; most have not yet risen.

The wall is comforting against your back as you lean against it, a solid presence, and reassuring. Through it you feel the great mass of the fortress-monastery: its heavy guns and armored walls; the men who call it home: the chapter-serfs and your comrades. You stand there for a while, lost in thought, thinking of men you once knew, brothers you saw fall in combat, their blood soaking the ground. For a moment you feel as if you have lived an age.

A door opens down the hall, and you see Aimon emerge from his room, looking fresh and bright, his blond hair glinting in the crystal light. He sees you and raises a hand in greeting, his own tunic embroidered like yours.

You straighten and offer him a small smile as he approaches, reaching out and clasping hands with him.

“Good morrow to you, brother,” he says, and you respond in kind before releasing his hand.

You force the weariness from your eyes and features and smile warmly at him, clapping him on the shoulder and putting your arm around him, pulling him toward the refectory.

“I’m glad to see you, Brother Aimon,” you say solemnly, “I had heard that the fighting was fierce during your last excursion.”

You give him a meaningful look.

“I feared that it might have been too taxing for you.”

He snorts in derision, but his eyes are laughing. “Too taxing perhaps for an old man like you, Alaric. --How long has it been since you were in a real fight?”

You laugh and hug him to your side, ruffling his blond hair with your other hand, eliciting a noise of protest as you dishevel him.

“Is Master Dante an old man?” you breathe to him, laughing softly. “Is he, young blood?”

Aimon flushes slightly.

“Come on,” you laugh, “we should hurry or your fellows will eat their share and ours too!”

You release your hold on his shoulders and press on through the halls, the flow of others growing stronger as you leave the first company’s area and enter the main body of the monastery. Other astartes pass you by, greeting you quietly as they go about their own business or join you on your way to the refectory. Armsmen and chapter serfs too flow past, their livery red and gold, looking small beside the forms of your brethren.

The refectory is large: big enough to seat the entire chapter and more besides. You sit down at a table with Aimon and several other veterans of the chapter as serfs begin to serve you.

“Will you have wine with your meal, lord?” One asks.

You shake your head slightly, the color in your cheeks and the warmth of your reunion with Aimon fading at the memory of your dreams. “No, thank you,” you murmur, “water instead, if you please.” The serf nods and fills your goblet silently as the other veterans look at you, their eyes questioning, but unobtrusive.

You accept the plate that the serf delivers with good grace and begin to eat, but the taste is ash in your mouth. You almost gag but restrain the reflex, your eyes darkening as you stare down at the plate, your knife and fork still held poised in your hands.

The other veterans receive their meals in silence, their faces subdued. Aimon watches you closely, his eyes sharp and penetrating.

You ignore Aimon for a moment, forcing yourself to continue eating, carving bites from your meal and slowly consuming them as the ash taste fades. Your eyes flick up at him, hard as flint as you continue to eat.

“Something wrong?” you ask quietly, “Did not your sergeant teach you that it is rude to stare, young blood?”

He flinches slightly, and the veterans sitting next to you all stop eating and turn to look at you and him. “No Alaric…” he breathes, “There is nothing wrong with me. It is you I am concerned for.”

You drop your utensils with a clatter to your plate and look at him for a long moment before standing. “Leave it be, Aimon,” you say quietly. The veteran next to you, Keenan, grabs your arm and looks up at you as you rise.

You stop and look at Keenan for a long moment, his blue eyes hard and unflinching.

“You are right, brother,” you say quietly, the anger and unease you feel gradually releasing its hold on your heart. “It is a poor excuse to say that I am feeling ill at ease, but such is the case. My heart is restless.”

Aimon’s eyes linger on you as you turn to look at him. “Please forgive my shortness, brother, and my words. I meant no disrespect. I fear that I should speak with the chaplain.”

Keenan slowly releases his grip on your arm, the other veterans returning their attention to their meal. Aimon nods to you. “You may speak with me at any time, brother,” he tells you quietly, all joking and rivalry gone, “we all feel a weight on our souls at times.” He reaches out his hand to you, and you take it, smiling a little. “Go then,” he says softly, “I will see you at the firing ritual.”

You release your grip on his arm and step away from the table, a serf coming to clear your half-eaten meal as you walk away, feeling the eyes of many on you as you leave so early.

The fortress is empty and deserted as you make your way to the chapel, your mind now burdened further with doubt. What brought you to speak so to Aimon, whom you have known for so long?

The chaplain stands inside, readying himself for his sermon. Your sandals are nearly silent on the stone of the floor, but the chaplain notices your presence immediately.

“Alaric,” he murmurs, his voice deep and soft with age. “What brings you here at this early hour?”

“May I sit?” you ask quietly, and the chaplain nods his assent, watching you carefully as you fold yourself into one of the empty pews.

“Brother-Chaplain,” you murmur, “these past nights -- these past many nights, I have been plagued by dreams.”

He arches an eyebrow as he watches you.

“Dreams?” he echoes softly, and you nod in affirmation.

“Dreams which haunt my thoughts and waking hours,” you whisper, looking up at him. “I get no rest from them. And…” you hesitate, unwilling to go on.

“And?” The chaplain prompts quietly.

“And I fear it is affecting me. I lashed out at Aimon -- a man I have known for decades, whom I have fought beside. I called him a ‘young blood’ and shamed him in front of our fellows. I feel… stretched. We do not need sleep, they say, but these dreams…” You trail off.

“What comes to you, in these dreams?” he asks, eyes sharp as they move over your face.

You take a deep breath, hiding your eyes for a moment and letting your fingers trail along the embroidered hem of your tunic.

“Three things, brother chaplain,” you say quietly, eyes still lowered. “Three things visit me in the night: a fire burning on a table, yet the table suffers no harm; I feel the breath of someone close to me, on my neck and shoulder; and then I see myself, naked, my lips and tongue red with blood I have drunk. I feel it flow down my throat and…” Your breath catches for a moment as the memories come back to you, almost drowning you. “...And I drink it. I want it. I want more of it.”

You shake your head helplessly, the chaplain silent as he watches you.

“And you fear that this fate awaits you?” he asks quietly, after a long silence has stretched between you.

“Yes,” you say quietly, “I fear it. I fear the monster I may become.” You raise your eyes at last and look at him desolately.

He sighs and puts his hand on your shoulder, meeting your eyes. “You fear the loss of your self,” he murmurs, “the loss of your control. I will tell you Alaric, that this battle is one you must fight alone. Each day and each night, as we all must.” He smiles slightly. “Take strength in that knowledge.” He squeezes your shoulder. “Few astartes dream, it is true, and for the rest of it... I cannot say what it might mean. The breath on your skin, and the fire… these are things beyond my ken. Perhaps one of the librarians may be more useful in this matter.”

The chaplain takes a long breath and releases your shoulder. “I will warn you, brother, to not put too much stock in signs and portents. You are a son of the Emperor and your fate is yours to command. Be strong and fearless in that choice. Remember Blessed Sanguinius and his example.”

You nod in understanding, his soft words putting your mind at rest for now. “May I stay for a moment?” You ask him, “I would like to offer a prayer before the morning chapel begins.”

He nods and smiles. “Of course.”

He gestures gently to the front of the chapel and you rise and move to kneel before the aquila, offering a quiet prayer, your thoughts calming in the quiet and stillness. When you rise, you feel at ease, the confession of your dreams and the silent prayer an ease to your burdens.

“Remember brother,” the chaplain calls quietly to you as you turn to leave, “strength and perseverance: these are the traits of a true son of the Emperor. Give of yourself, protect those in need, and serve as our father served his.”

You nod. “I will, brother-chaplain,” you say quietly, and turn to leave. The rest of the morning passes in a firing exercise with the rest of the first company. As you and the other veterans returns your gear to the armory, a true young blood approaches you, summoning you to the Chapter Master. You nod and send the neophyte on his way as you quickly stow your weapons and armor and proceed through the monastery to Master Dante’s quarters.

Inside it is like a cathedral of light: tall, high windows admit shafts of bright sunlight slanting into the high-ceilinged room. Master Dante stands looking out one of the windows, eyes distant.

“Alaric,” he says quietly, turning to face you. “Thank you for coming.”

You bow low. “Master Dante,” you say quietly.

“I have an assignment for you,” he replies, watching you mildly.

“My lord?” you murmur quietly, your voice questioning.

“An alliance benefits all who join in it,” you say quietly, “Sanguinius himself did not stand alone, even at the end.”

He smiles that same, small smile. “That is good,” he says softly, sitting in a hard wooden chair, facing you. “I happen to agree. Some confuse alliance with servitude; they value their independence highly, and in some ways I understand. I would not place this chapter under the control of any entity of the Imperium -- but to deny ourselves the aid and succor of others is a folly.”

A long pause follows and he smiles again. “So I am glad that you are of a like mind. I assume you do not know of Eskaton.”

You shake your head silently and he smiles.

“No, I thought not. A great battle was once fought on that world -- a battle in which the Blood Angels played a crucial part. During that battle, however, we incurred a debt -- the story of which I will not now burden you with, for you will have ample opportunity to hear it later. In payment of that debt, a brother of our chapter stays upon that world and offers aid and guidance to its rulers.”

He folds his hands in his lap.

“The time has come for a new brother to be sent to that world, and I have chosen you.”

“May I ask why, lord?” you ask calmly, keeping your voice carefully neutral.

Master Dante sighs softly. “You have been in my honor guard for how many years, Alaric?” he asks, though you are certain he knows perfectly well.

“Three years, lord,” you say softly, and he nods.

“Three years,” he echoes. “We have fought together many times on Armageddon, and I have taken your measure. I know who I am dealing with.”

“Lord…” you begin reluctantly, shifting uneasily as the master’s eyes sharpen. “You flatter me with your choice. Truly.”

“...But?”

“But I fear I am not suited for this task. I... am plagued by dreams…”

The master smiles. “I too have dreams, Alaric.”

You flush quietly. “Yes lord. But… in my dreams I see myself as a… a monster, a thing which drinks the blood of the living to slake its thirst.”

“And you think that you are the only child of Sanguinius to struggle with the fear of such a fate?” he asks, his voice quiet and calm.

“No, lord,” you say softly, meeting his eyes, “but I fear it has a hold on me, deep in my heart. What would happen if I should succumb, and I the only Astartes on the world? Am I not the last who should be sent on such a mission?”

The master rises, his eyes sad as he walks to you and places his hand over your heart. “You are a good man, Alaric,” he says quietly, “and the simple fact that this fear runs so deep in you is testament to that. You have always striven to protect the Emperor’s people, from both its enemies and its protectors. You are strong and you have a deep soul; this I have seen. You are not our greatest warrior, nor our greatest leader, but you are a true heir to our father: you have his spirit in you. And it is for this reason that I have chosen you.”

You drop your eyes to the floor as the memory of the red-eyed demon wearing your skin flashes through your mind.

“I thank you for your words, my lord,” you say softly, “Whatever you ask, I will serve.”

The master nods in approval and gives you a soft smile before lowering his hand from your heart. “I am glad, Alaric,” he says quietly, his smile fading. “You are strong, whatever your doubts.”

He turns and walks quietly back to the window. “There is a ship in orbit that is en route for Eskaton, and a thunderhawk is waiting for you in the hangar to take you to it. Collect your wargear and meet it. You leave today.”

“Forgive my absence, brother-librarian,” you say quietly, “the chapter master wished to speak with me about an assignment and I was unable to begin training with the rest of the company. You have my thanks for coming to see me yourself.”

He smiles slightly. “Yes. Well.”

A slight pause follows and he looks around, the other members of your company glancing at you both out of the corner of their eyes. The librarian smiles vaguely and guides you away.

“What… advice did the chaplain say I might be in need of?” you ask quietly.

The librarian returns his piercing eyes to you, and you shift, uncomfortably. “In the matter of dreams,” he replies calmly, “as I’m sure you well know.”

You nod stiffly. “Of course, brother-librarian.”

He watches you expectantly. “Well?”

“A fire,” you murmur, avoiding his eyes still, “that burns on a table which does not catch flame, and…” you trail off, the memory of the breath on your skin returning to you and catching you off guard, your breath catching in your throat.

The librarian looks impatient. “And…?”

“And the feel of a breath on my skin,” you murmur reluctantly, unwilling suddenly to share the memory or even mention of it to another.

The librarian quiets and inspects you for a long moment, saying nothing. “A fire on a table?” he asks quietly and you nod.

“These things… are not known to me. I will have to consult with the others.”

You feel a hand on your shoulder and Aimon’s voice. “Everything all right?” he asks, his voice stiff as he looks at the librarian.

“It’s nothing,” you say, forcing a smile, “just getting ready to leave, that’s all.”

His eyes widen. “To leave? But I just returned! Brother, tell me this is a joke.”

You shake your head. “No joke, Aimon,” you reply. “An assignment from the master himself.”

Aimon raises his eyebrows appreciatively. “Oh, well in that case I should offer my congratulations.”

You laugh and nod, clasping hands with him and putting your hand on his shoulder. “Thank you.”

Aimon smiles and rests his forehead against yours. “Brother,” he says quietly, squeezing your shoulder, “We have spent too much time and shed too much blood together to worry about such a parting. I will be here when you return -- and then we’ll see about who’s the real young blood out of us.”

You laugh happily and nod, smiling crookedly at him. “That we will, brother. And I shall return, have no fear of that -- someone has to teach the boys to fight, and god help us if it’s you.”

He smiles and leans back, clapping you on the shoulder reassuringly. “So it shall be, my brother.”

You nod. “So it shall be.”

You break apart, and turn away, the sound of the door shutting behind you brings with it the reality of your fate: years alone apart from your brothers on a strange world.

The inside of your room seems oddly warm and comforting as you enter it, collecting your meager things and wrapping up the ebony statuettes in your spare tunic and breeches. You turn back as you leave the room, eyes running over it as you feel a strange sense of nostalgia wash over you. Steeling yourself, you turn and leave for the armory.

You make your way to the armory and being collecting your wargear, several of the chapter’s serfs assisting you with the weapons you have collected over two centuries of warfare.

The red of your armor shines dully in the lights above you, and your eyes run over it, noting the pits and scores buffed over from past engagements. You trail a finger along the stained parchment of a seal, eyes flicking over the intricate script. One of the serfs approaches you respectfully and you nod to him and step back, allowing him and his assistants to prepare your armor for transport.

You lead the way out of the armory and down to the hanger, the whine of a Thunderhawk’s engines screaming in your ears.

Releasing his hand you look up and glance over his ten men. “May I ask who sent you, Sergeant Nye?”

“The Chapter Master, my lord” he replies, regaining his surety. “We are to stand by you, as you said, my lord, and serve as your honor guard while you are on Eskaton.”

You nod silently and move your eyes over the line of men, their hellguns and their red and gold carapace armor are spotlessly clean.

“Will you introduce me to them?” you ask the sergeant quietly.

He looks at you in surprise and nods, turning to face them. “Helmets off,” he says calmly, and the men quietly sling their rifles and remove their helmets, fitting them precisely under their crooked arms.

The sergeant walks down the line, giving each name and rank in turn. “We are honored to serve you, my lord.”

You smile and nod, shaking hands with each, their guantleted hands small in yours. “I am glad to have you all with me,” you say quietly, your eyes subdued as you run your eyes over their faces, memorizing each one before turning to Sergeant Nye. “Thank you. Let’s get loaded.”

He nods crisply and barks another order. You turn and watch the chapter serfs bring your arms and armor across the hangar deck, the armsmen moving quietly up the Thunderhawk’s ramp.

You say a final, silent farewell before you turn and walk up the ramp after them.

cool, make sure you link the thread in it when it goes live

Will do. I'll need to archive it or something, right?

>>39020523
archive.moe autoarchives it, but you can also archive it at sup/tg/ which probably has better exposure

>>39020565
its also good to make sure you have the quest name in the tags so you can just link that and it will show them all
