What remains of your forces in the system blink away for repairs while idle corvettes move in to salvage the wreckage and assess the remnants of the ancient shipyard. Your pods continue to scout the region, scouting through the densely populated systems of the Obsidian Queen. Her forces are far more numerous then you had anticipated, and her industrial base is far greater than your own. Even worse, your costly victory against the Scavengers, while denying them the salvage of the Builder’s ships, has depleted your own fleet considerably. You only hope that your technological advantage can compensate for the sheer numbers your opponent possesses, at least until you can grow your own fleet to match.

Your docking pylons quickly fill with the skeletons of new ships, and workers scramble over the bleeding husks of damaged craft in a desperate attempt to repair them before any new invasion can arrive. Your allies remain on high alert, and their ships patrol the nearby systems in anticipation for the worst.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest!

We really need to start ramping up our production of warships and infrastructure.

We haven't even built a solar array yet!

I kinda imagined our Hive creep to be a weird mix between Zerg Creep, Tyranid Bio-formation, and the RedLight biomass from Prototype, for that sweet-ass almost-bioluminescence.

Your pods drift into the dim light of the red dwarf as they blink across the system, quickly observing it from every angle. Further out near the edge of the system is a pair of small objects, both located at their opposed lagrange points. Each one is a small organic structure of hive origin in the appearance of an oblong ball covered in long, wispy antennae. They give off no signals, are clearly long dead with wounds and open gashes across their ovoid hulls.

Further in is a single, barren planet. Shattered hive spires cover the surface, all of them built in the signature architecture of the White Queen. Defensive bunkers cover the surface, crumbled and forgotten. There is a hint of an atmosphere, but it lacks any breathable air, and the planet lacks any sign of a molten core or magnetic field. The few hives across the planet that lack any sign of bombardment have been detonated from within with their structures bent up and outwards like massive flower pedals frozen in time.
You detect no signs of life.

You quickly have several corvettes filled with your drones and have them sent to the surface. There are few landing zones to choose from, but your corvettes descend upon several of the detonated hives and touch down on the delicate looking petals of glassed slag. Your drones disembark and make their way into the twisted ruins. The tunnels seem to dive bellow the surface for miles.

Your flies swarm through the tunnels as your drones follow. The tunnels twist and spiral downward, opening out to the likely source of the blast, a massive bowl of melted slag and petrified remains. Several tunnels move out from the central chamber and flow even deeper beneath the crust, twisting and turning in on itself for kilometers until the walls are no longer scorched. The petrified hive walls grow softer, and the air becomes more humid.

Even for your drones, it is an exhausting march for hours, but your flies continue to investigate the strangely preserved tunnels. The hall tapers until it is hardly large enough for a worker, and then quickly opens to a small chamber. There is no light, but as your first fly breaches the room, you can feel something.
There is a thought. Distant, and faint, but it is there.

In the center of the room is a single thinker, frozen in place with a thick cocoon of mucus layered over it. It pulses with life, as if gasping from holding its breath, and you feel it's thoughts slowly flail about clumsily as it seeks its queen.

It's mind latches to you, instead.
"New Queen!" It shouts. Keep safe for new Queen! Done well!"

You feel a surge of thought pulse out from the small drone, and the depths of the planet begin to stir, and you can feel the thinker call out to you with its mind open. It's last memory, of an immaculate white queen upon her throne. She is tired, and angry.
"My daughter..." She says, "kill her for me."

The thinker's pulse of thought is slowly returned by others. Reports from infrastructure, the murmuring of ventilation ducts and the whispers of storage tanks. The silence is slowly filled with the sound of a hive's thoughts. They reach out to you.

"Mother is dead." They say, "Do thing for new Queen!"

You can hardly believe it, something good happening for once. You take account of the new forces. They seem to include a sizable nutrient reserve to tide them over, although there does not appear to be any source of income on the planet. The hive itself is small, little more then a vault, with no real infrastructure other then storage tanks and chambers of dormant drones. They slowly wake from their sleep, and the tanks begin to pump nutrient paste back to the surface as access tunnels and cargo ramps open up into the blown-out husks of the surface hives.

Does anyone else feel really, REALLY touched that The White Queen (Mum) believed in her last daughter so much that she built a fucking Hive/Vault on a completely isolated world JUST so she could tell us to eradicate the bitch that killed her?

Best Mom.

I vote we should start changing certain areas of our carapace to white (Both to accentuate our own Red, and to honor Mother, and so the Black Queen knows for Absolute-Certain just WHO is going to wipe her out.)

I had a quick though. Is it possible for us (the queen) to transfer our consciousness like theseus? Because if we could, we could make pseudoqueens on all our worlds that are basically super specialized thinkers, and if our true body is ever attacked we could just transfer our will to the other bodies.
>>
>>39025333
A queen is not any more productive than an egg layer. Or an autonomous base like we had on Raligna.

Except those can't get rebellious teen phase and are perfectly synced with the hive rather than having to coordinate through diplomatic communication and hope they do what we want.

There is no overwhelming benefit to birthing a new Queen. She could marginally do better overseeing a hive or strategizing, but since we have relays and quantum thinkers that benefit is effectively net zero. Every time this topic comes up, it is downvoted by the majority. Either come up with tangible reasons we should dump so many resources into essentially an unnecessary side character or shut the fuck up about it already.

>>39025341
Our carapace is already mostly white with red accentuations.

>Lay and send an egg layer to re-settle the planet

You probe the thinker's memory as it connects more firmly with your network. You technological advancements make communication with the rest of your hive awkward at first, but the drones are quick to integrate.

The thinker opens its mind and pours over what little it remembers. The vault bellow the hives was dug out and filled with dormant drones, with nutrient stores filled to last for centuries. The thinker was given the simplest of orders: wait for a familiar queen, pass on its instructions, and awaken the hive. As the thinker settled in and watched the drones enter their sleep, the hives above detonated as the fleets in orbit vanished, recalled to a distant battle.

You search through its mind for any research, and while the White Queen knew much, very little appears to have trickled down to this thinker. Its understanding of memory crystals is decent, it is even aware of the liquid carbon pools you discovered, although your mother never managed to finish the research before fleeing from this world. You compare your own technology to what the thinker knows of your mother's and yours is by far superior in most respects, with your own technology base having been greatly boosted by your study of other races.

There is also something else, a locked memory, forced to be forgotten and cleansed from consciousnesses. The thinker resists the attempt to search through the memory.

As your ships ferry your new drones to their new posts your patrol ships continue to monitor your space, as well as your allies. Hours pass, and as the day goes on you suspect your brash and aggressive reconnaissance may have scared her off for the time being.
Your patrol craft detect an anomaly appear several light-hours from Raligha's orbit, shattering your hopes for your good luck to continue.

Your patrol ships intercept the scouts, and they are not scouts. Your ship's blink places it within visual range of a battleship, its fleet filled with corvettes covered in auto cannons as layers of swarm drones ripple over it like armor. They open fire, and your patrol corvette jinks as a stream of chitin slugs slam against it. It shifts its position and manages to blink away as the swarmers reach out like a claw after your ship.

You can count a single battleship flanked by seventy corvettes that appear to be dedicated to point defense from your inspection, at least a dozen frigates, and four cruisers. A pair of battlecruisers drift along the sides of the battleship covered in swarm drones, and you suspect they are carriers in design.

By the time I finished writing a few more votes came in an swung it, then tied it again. Either way it's close.
Since this is a vote of "do the thing" or "don't do the thing" I'll consider a tie to be "don't do the thing", since you can elect to do it later any time, but if you did it now, you wouldn't ever be able to undo it.

I feel like we're not using our stealthed ships enough.
Unless the stealth system itself is unsuited to protracted battle, but we should at least see wolfpacks of frigates getting close to enemy ships and hosing them down in plasma fire in an alpha strike.
>>
>>39025725
Leeland should be well hidden and shrouded. Raligha was the obvious choice for investigation / attack since it belonged to the Gardener. OQ is also probably trying to expand and Raligha is a good choice for that along with some Unity systems.

We haven't been in a battle where we could ambush like that until now. And that's what I said basically. >>39025725

What i meant is that even if it wasn't an ambush and more of a defensive battle, cant we have groups of frigates cloak, make their way behind the enemy ships, and then open up once they're close?

>>39025774
Speaking of shrouds, we ought to institute a policy of constructing one on every planet we settle from now on.
>>
>>39025799
Good thinking, we can use our stealth vessels and our vanguard fleets to flank and encircle the enemy. Hell, that ought to be a default tactic of ours for using stealthed ships in defensive maneuvers.

...Did you read what I said? We haven't been in a battle where that was remotely possible until just this now.

We can and should be about to ambush them right now.

We could, but most of the battles have been us blinking in the middle of a group of guys, so we can't most of the time.

You have your picket forces hold position in high orbit. It's near the outer edge of your anti-orbital defenses' range, but will allow you to intercept any attempted bombardments more easily.

Your defensive fleet enters its formation over your world, and your stealth craft move out and around the incoming fleet as your pods charge in to detonate at close range.

Your picket fleet forms into a defensive formation and waits. You have them hold fire to avoid striking your stealthed forces as they approach, and they spread out in their orbit as you see the flashes of distant railguns firing in the darkness as they decelerate towards you. Your pods twist around them in an effort to evade, but several lucky shots glance against unlucky pods, incinerating their thin hulls like tissue paper in a turbine, leaving nothing but powder as the slugs continue on. Your picket bares the brunt of the salvo, eating the few rounds that would have impacted into your hive, while others rip through the atmosphere like thunderbolts, igniting from the kinetic force with several megatons of force. Blossoms of fire bloom beneath you and the shields of your cruisers flicker, but do not fail as they fire their thrusters to stabilize their orbits.

Your pods shutter back and forth in the torrent of kinetic fire. The flights of corvettes move forward in sheets, spiraling around the larger ships as they fill space with shrapnel. The swarm drones of the battlecruisers spin just beneath like ablative armor, intercepting the pods that get past the corvettes like a massive macerator of chitin and bone. Ripples of flame and boiling blood spews from the shell of swarm fighters in delicate, wispy streams as your pods vanish, ground to dust in a wall of flesh.

The fleet continues to slow, and you can see the frigates split from the rest of the fleet before diving to the ground bellow. Shuttles stream from the cruisers and they drop bellow the fleet as the battleship closes in on your picket, its armor rippling with bubbling ooze and sublimating skin against the hellfire of your picket's weapons.

On the surface of Raligha, the sound of thunder rolls over the hills and crags of the dense jungle as the pricing white beams of your anti-orbital batteries flair against the dull glow of distant bombardment sites and raging forest fires.

>>
>>39026037
Your feet opens fire against the larger enemy force, their blows impacting your shields and yours digging into the swarming ablative layer of fighters spinning about the battleship. Concentrated fire from your batteries quickly burns through the corvettes, and you watch as approaching frigates shed shuttles as they incinerate in beams of light. Your air born drones are quick to intercept, launching en masse from your hive.

The battleship above slowly eclipses the local star as tiny blemishes of light flicker along its hull as your anti-orbital grid concentrates its fire on the fleet while your picket force whittle them down. Your cloaked ships arrive within weapons range and drop their cloaks as they lash out with their lances, burning swaths of swarms and slicing subcaptials in half with sweeping torrents of plasma. Secondary explosions ripple through the battlecruisers and they break up from the unrelenting hail of fire. The swarms of ablative drones spiral away without their parent ship, and your fleet digs into the hull of the battleship, ripping out chunks with their weapons like claws in flesh.

There is an explosion, and a hole the size of a cruiser is punched through the side of the ship. A server ship emerges from below Raligha's horizon and fires again, severing the Battleship's drive wing. It pivots and enters an uncontrolled tumble, and another shot breaks its spine, snapping the hull in half. Skyl corvettes, unusually tiny and exceptionally nimble, pour from the crevasses of the server ship and open fire on the remaining craft.

On the surface, your drones move to intercept the approaching landing craft amid the chaos of bombardment.

Your interceptors are on the scene almost immediately, and the heavier drones soon follow. Chitin slugs rip into the thrusters and fragile hull of the enemy shuttles and send them tumbling to the forest floor, sending drones scattering like leaves in the wind to the sound of loud, crunchy thuds bellow. Your drones begin patrolling the area for ground forces as your interceptors make short work of the slow and cumbersome shuttles.

You have your strafers and bombers running air strikes through the night as sniffers search high and low for the surviving invaders. You can detect no mental connection on the surface, so they appear to be using thinkers. The Ralighans have piled sacrifices of food and totems into the center of their villages, even the ones far from your hive, and you can hear the drumming of prayers between the rumble of bombing runs as your drones continue to weed out the infection of enemy forces.

You take account of your losses, and you are surprised and revealed. Things could have gone far worse, and while now the Obsidian Queen knows you have Raligha, she also knows you won't give it up easily. You watch as the remains of the assault fleet falls from orbit.

The Skyl ships retreat within the Server ship and after venting the hull of several intact ships to ensure they are no more, it folds space, curving in on itself and vanishing in a twisting knot of spacetime.

Back on Leeland, Elizabeth stirs in her pod. The membrane drains of medical fluid and she collapses to the floor as she wakes, coughing up phlegm from her lungs.

Your analysis was quick and efficient, and interesting. The nanomachine infection within her brain has progressed. While previously you detected scaring throughout the cerebral cortex, there is now... growths, where the scar tissue once was, almost like a new segment of brain grown from old tissue. Crystaline structures have begun to form through several portions of the brain, and there is apparent damage to her genetic structure akin to that of hybrid dna, not human.

She grabs the folded clothes from the claw of a waiting worker.

"Your genetic structure has been altered, and several crystaline structures have appeared within the brain."
You have a simple hologram projected showing the results of your scans.

"This, what are these, tumors?" She asks.

"New brain tissue. They seem to be psionicly sensitive segments that have replaced portions of the brain." Your speaker lets out a click of its mandibles. "The crystaline structures appear to connect them, and interacts with psionic signals in some way."

Elizabeth sinks back against the hive wall. "In some way. You mean you're not sure?" She asks.

"The crystals are unkown, and require further study."

She slowly rubs her temples with her palms with her eyes closed shut. "Okay." She says after a long pause. "Okay. I, I figured it would be something like that." She slowly slides down the wall to the ground and takes a slow breath. "So I'm not technically human anymore, am I?"

"No. The alterations to the brain are reminiscent to that of a queen's mental relay, but the crystal structures are unknown, and appear to amplify the psionic signals."

Elizabeth stares ahead of her to the far wall for a long while, thoughts drifting through her mind and spilling over around her. "Well nothing to do about it, I suppose." She says suddenly as she props herself back to her feet. "We'll keep an eye on its progression every few days, nothing else to do." She straightens her jumpsuit and quickly moves to the row of pods where the two Earthlings still sit, next to the Scavenger leader and the taidaren twins. "You're getting quite a collection, do you think I could speak to them sometime?"

Around the corner there is a soft plop and a muffled gurgle, followed by a panicked shuffling as Elizabeth turns to catch a glimpse of a neon striped tentacle vanish from around the corner.

"Was that... do you have a ceph here too?" She asks.

Not really, the relationship between the Union and the Commonwealth is more akin to the relationship between North and South Korea. They have a treaty to not fight each other openly and thats about it. The Commonwealth even bans trade with the Union.

"His name is Coil." Your speaker says. There is a loud series of plops as Coil tumbles over himself in a panic like a beanbag of gelatin as a warrior moves up behind him. He flops to the floor in the middle of the hall and quickly begins flashing bright yellow.

"Hey it's okay, relax." Elizabeth walks over to Coil and quickly pinches the base of an eye stalk, to which the yellow flashes shift to a light blue. She looks back to your speaker. "Having a decentralized brain means there tends to be a lot more pressure points, some of which can induce mood swings."

You actually didn't know that. Well, you did, but not that trick specifically. Coil apparently spent too much time studying ancient texts to know that.

"You didn't open that canister while I was out, did you?" Elizabeth asks.

"No." your drone chitters.

"Well let's go open it then." She says, then looks down to Coil. "You want to tag along?" Coil shimmers with a faint hue of agreement and floats several inches into the air with his harness, his tentacles dragging along the ground.

I think we should stop here before we start to pass out. We can start next week right were we left off, obviously.

Oh for fuck's sake, QD has specifically stated if we had been up front with them they would have tried to open up trade relations with us. Probably would have still tried to spy on us, but it isn't like everybody isn't doing that to everyone else in this quest.

Would you trust the people who decided on the policy of "Annex it, Forget about it, or if we can't deal with it, leave it alone?" as their Xeno relations policy?
I would trust them to be nothing if not predictable. What the Union is trying to do is bring pre-FTL societies into a state of economic dependency in a trading relationship, or leaving them be if they're pre industrial. That is the basis for their relationship with every civilization they encounter; economic. If they come across them at the right stage of development, they can make them dependent for production of high tech products (i.e. quantum computers), if it's too early leave them be to develop, too late and they engage them on a case by case basis.

Really, that's the most reasonable and peaceful doctrine you can reasonably have when it comes to first contact, while still establish dominance in something approaching a win win situation. Barring a handful of rouge factions and their insane agents, the Union has been about as up front and diplomatic with us as we could reasonably expect an alien spacefaring civilization to be. Even our current AI allies tried to blow us up when they first noticed us, they turned out to be pretty chill when we gave them a chance, or three.

Except we can't. Scavs are only going to be shooting at everything instead of going where we tell them, and if they win they'll loot the shit out of them.

Humans, meanwhile, are going to be rather concerned with an aggressive looters race, especially if those attack some of their systems in the meantime (hell maybe we can pin the Hope on them). We have the scav's forward base address, the humans can go in and shoot them for us.

Also, in their scouting attack, the scavs have done much more damage to us than humans ever did. With the recent combat fiasco, that damage has been multiplied many times.

The Obsidian Queen sent Thinkers on this mission only. Hence we didn't hear her constant emotion of hate around.

But we have the ability to scan an organism's memories by putting them in a bio-tank.

Surely we can scan her Thinkers the same way. Though they might be young and fresh-hatched just for this invasion.

...Though if they're not, and we do get something, they might contain similar forbidden lore of the Crystal Necronomicon that Mother censored from us.

>>
>>39027767
Better?
>>
One question always bothered me.
The destruction of the vast majorities of the ancient hives happened 70,000 thousand or so years ago.
Mother was killed around a year ago, and it was only just a year ago that the Black Queen launched her final assault against Mother.
What were they doing in the intervening several thousand years?
Did the psionic cannon really take 70,000 years to perfect? If so, why didn't the void crystals send the Obsidian Queen on the attack much earlier than that?
>>
>>39027878
No one said anything about parasites or mind control.

Just memory scanning with a bio-tank. No parasite is required for that.
>>
>>39027878
We can't actually do that, drones shut down if other queens try to fuck with them like that.
>>
>>39027788
yes that is the main topic however i was replying to the point about flies and their extra shit
>>
>>39027904
Hmm, makes for an emergency stun.
When can we weaponize parasites?
Think of bullet delivery mechanism.

Or, if that's not feasible, can we weaponize the nano-mines for infantry use? Just imagine bullets tipped with that, it pierces the enemy's hide (or maybe just sticks to it), and starts leeching metals from them. Before long a small metallic tree erupts from the husk of the enemy, which you can salvage after into metals for our cause.
When can we research this?
>>
>>39027932
We really can't do stuff like that, mainly because they don't work like that, but also because it's a bit retarded...
>>
>>39027950
Well if not infantry-sized, at least make it ship-sized. Because face it, who doesn't want to see their enemies reduced into gleaming metallic trees that we can harvest? If we can research more into nanites, we could theoretically aim for the weaponized nanites to turn OG ships' nerves into metal. No brain, no link to OG, free nutrients and metal for making more of our ships.

At least they could weaken the enemy's armor plating, making them more vulnerable to our attacks.
>>
>>39027996
I don't think we can do that on a level that would work on ships, as it would just be ramming a ship into them and hoping there's enough left to cannibalize.

The infestation/harvest drop pod plan is feasible because we can make it realistically work without it being pointless.
>>
>>39028033
You know, that's technically what the boarding parties do. With weaponized nanites it would be much the same deal, just on a microscopic scale.

>>
>>39028802
He also had endoskeletal armor and stab resistant skin (courtesy of Theseus) before we picked him up. I'm thinking next we give him augmented eyes and ears, and fermentation gut if he can still get drunk with it somehow.

After that we can design a new parasite for him with oxygen recyclers and a bio electric carapace, which would allow him to hold his breath for a long time and restart his organs in a pinch, respectively. And in case your wondering I already asked QD on the ask page whether that would work (it would).

The talk is about a mobile backup relay that is dropped on the ground, to be used if our ships get all destroyed. If it is geared for digging, then it can burrow into a more secure and hidden position when that need arises.
