You've been out for a while, but this isn't the first time you're on an assignment that takes you plenty of time to complete. Back when you wouldn't even consider being anything but an adventurer or a freelancer at best you've been out for weeks, or even months, without seeing civilization. Not because you hated it, but treasure-filled dungeons are a much better place to stay if you want to take what isn't supposed to be yours and not have anyone tell you otherwise.

Except for monsters or other beings you don't really care about. Heck, you don't actually really care about people much. Unless they're your friends, of course. But then again, that's how living in the shadows is like.

The pirate haven is in sight, your thoroughly trained night vision allows you to see better than most people in anything short of complete darkness, and even then you have a quite well-developed sixth sense, enough to get your bearings. A tall wooden palisade prevents easy access from any side, except for a cavern in the cliff face where you suppose ships get in and out.

Unfortunately, it's raining cats and dogs, but you've still managed to spot a couple ships enter but a few moments ago. Well, one entered, the other crashed against the rocks. Bad night to be at sea, and you suppose even pirates make mistakes.

If your intuition is correct, the "captured" ship that made its way in is actually a trap, and a band of elite adventurers is waiting to be brought in to wreak havoc in the pirate den, while another ship is following from the distance with reinforcements ready to jump in.

But you? You're here to gather intelligence, you have to move fast before those adventurers let everyone and their dog know they're here, you have to get acquainted with the haven's layout and get right where you need to. Someone has to know what's really going on here, and it's going to be you.

Palisades, pfft. Good enough to keep wildlife at bay and scare local peasants, should there have been any. Maner is a few days away from here, so fat chance for that. The day you will let a wooden palisade stop you will be the day you're too old to continue working.

You poise yourself comfortably on top of the defensive structures. They don't even have battlements, proof that this is really just a fancy haven and they just want to keep wildlife away. Not too surprising considering the Shadow Marches have been devastated in the past, right now it's a perfect haven where nobody would even think of looking for you.

Pity that their raids attracted a bit too much attention from Reboldeux, who really, really needed all the imports that they've took. The out-for-blood adventurers that are going to do a number to them in a few minutes are all the proof you need to know they're screwed already. But that's not why you're here.

You see a campfire ahead in a large, open space, covered by a wooden roof built to make life for the watch not too miserable in the rainy season. An impromptu barbican covers the entrance to the underground cave, where you suppose they have at least one pier, most likely a whole dock.

Off in the distance you see the reinforcements ship approaching but not entering the cave. Your keen eyes recognize the odd movement of something being shot from the stern castle, probably shot from a catapult. You faintly hear a "PRAISE THE SUN!" being shouted in the distance despite the heavy rain.

Judging from the angle he's never going to make it, you can't shoot a projectile that arcs in a parable and expect to hit anything inside a cave. Still, the angle is great and will get him as far inside as possible before he'll have to swim his way out of that mess.

But it's still a great, stylish jump, you give it a...

Also you know that as QM you have the right to break ties in a variety of methods, including rolling a 1d2 or just picking the one you like more, right?
>>
You have mixed feelings on that jump. A part of you thinks it was stupid and he shouldn't even have tried, but another keeps telling you it was so cool you should do it too one day.

But that signal was pretty clear: the attack is going to start very soon, so you're going to have to pick your pace up a bit. You usually just take it easy, you're not going to be seen unless you want to, at least most of the time, and you're pretty damn sure that even if you silhouette yourself on top of the palisades nobody is going to notice you, especially considering the heavy rain.

Actually, that's what you've decided you're doing. Skipping speedily on top of the spiky, sharpened wooden logs, you follow the path that leads to a wooden fortification where you suppose something interesting is happening right now. You notice that the path sports a depression at the beginning and then rolls upwards, making it easier for defenders to pick on the attackers with ranged weapons, and- are those barrels they're keeping, ready to roll down? Your guts tell you they're explosive, too.

Cool, but predictable, you doubt it's going to work.

There's not too many pirates on guard duty it seems, even the last line of defense has some fortifications, a barbican and some watchtowers but little else of note. You lower your profile so that even the watchmen won't spot you. The bullseye lanterns occasionally shift around, even on top of the palisade if just by accident, but when they do they don't find you: it's trivial for you to just gracefully drop down to the side and hang on with one hand, using their very fortifications as cover. Hoisting yourself back up and continuing at the same pace is equally easy.

The wooden fort is two stories tall, but has windows and looks more like a manor than a proper fortification. How are you going to break inside?

You gracefully drop down from the palisade, your fur-trimmed cape swinging in the wind despite the rain and water trying their darndest to keep it down and close to your form as much as possible. Your feet make no sound as they touch the ground and before anyone knows you're already Stalking.

At first, you had no idea how this worked, no matter how many times they tried explaining it to you. It's not just following someone, it's not "hiding in their shadow" as some people claim, although yes, there is much to be said about shadows and their uses, but not like this. Stalking is a matter of perfectly following, perfectly mirroring not just the path they're taking, but their very presence in their very state.

It's not a matter of evading notice as much as becoming one with your victim's presence, so that nobody can see you because your very existence is behind cover. You still don't get it but you can feel it, and most importantly you can DO it.

You follow a pirate going back inside, hearing him grumble as he complains to the guards at the front door that this blasted rain is going to drive him crazy and he has to get all the water out of his boots again. You spy the expression on the others' faces and you have all the proof you need that he's just a slacker.

The inside of the fort is pretty straightforward: there's a large hall, with columns holding up large balconies at both sides, and a long blue carpet heading straight ahead towards a pair of large double doors that are, however, wide open. You see stairwells leading up in both corners of the room. Up ahead you see the roof, which makes you presume this place isn’t very large.

Still, you don’t see anything or anyone of note, not out in plain sight at least. If you were a pirate, where'd you hide something interesting?

>>
>>39072831
Hmmm, I guess that makes sense. Did she have a bitchin' fur-trimmed cape?
>>
Both stairwells you see in the corner lead to the first floor, so you presume that you need to take another path to go to the basement.

You stop Stalking your target and nonchalantly head in a different direction; running would be pointless, you know for a fact that the more natural you look and move the less you're going to attract attention to yourself. You normally would have to worry about the fact you're dripping water, but aside from the fact there's plenty of dirt and water stains on the ground, going in various paths, you know for sure that in a short while this whole place will be completely wrecked, so it's not going to be a problem if someone notices you came inside after you already did your thing.

Going to the right, you open a door and find yourself in a long corridor. To your right, it takes a sharp turn after a very short walk and you presume it goes down into some kind of cellar; to your left, it still takes a sharp turn, but further away, and you spot a couple doors along the ways, leading inside rooms that, if your gut feeling is right, are most likely dormitories of some sort.

You take a moment to stop and hold your breath; like every good and successful rogue, you have an almost preternatural sense of hearing and you let it give you a hint. You hear the footsteps of the guy you've stalked before, you hear someone mumble something from upstairs, right above you, about the rain and what it does to scrolls and parchments, but the really big clue lies further inside the fort, to the left.

You can't quite pick up what they're hearing, but one of the voices is obviously unnatural, and even from this distance it gives you the chills. They must be in a room behind closed doors.

What to do, what to do...

That's not the kind of voice you hear often. This is why they sent you to see what was really going on: pirates that want to lay low don't suddenly become bold and start raiding ships en masse without expecting some sort of retaliation. Someone scouted this place ahead of time but the royal army's fluffy-tailed strategist apparently decided they weren't a threat yet, and she was quite pissed to learn she was wrong.

You have to admit she is quite smart and doesn't often make mistakes, so there really must be something odd going on, and what's weirder than a spooky voice?

There is no cover in the corridor and dripping wet as you are you can't just grab onto the ceiling to evade notice. Of course you could just drop or stash your fabulous cloak to solve this problem, but then you'd have lost more than you would gain by doing so, which makes it not worth it.

You use your keen sense of hearing to forewarn you of other presences, but it seems like most of them are either upstairs or sleeping in the dormitories. Maybe there's plenty more pirates out at sea that are stuck because of the sudden storm, or maybe their numbers are really just not very high.

The fort is depressingly barebones and quite spartan in decorations, which is very sad: you wanted to grab a souvenir. However, you're going to have to deal with how to get closer to your objective now.

You find yourself in front of a set of double doors, with another right behind you that lead to the main, open-spaced entrance room; you’re not quite out in the open but you would practically be if someone opened the doors behind you, or came in from around a corner on either side.

The voices, of course, come from inside, but maybe there's more ways to slip in...

You're not going to let a creaky door scare you, you've done way worse before and got out of it alive. You try it to see whether it's locked or not and you can't help but smirk when you see nobody thought about keeping their secret conversations behind actually closed doors.

As expected, the voices stop. "Who's there?", you hear someone say, and moments later a pirate opens it properly to check. He seems to be the sort of man that actually counts for something: old enough to have grizzled beard and hair and he wears a bicorn hat indoors, though he is disappointingly devoid of an eyepatch. The fact that his clothes are wet prove that he was outside not too long ago, and only enhance his already foul stench.

Of course he sees nothing outside, looking left and right to no avail. He then snorts and slams the door closed, but it's too late: you were already Stalking him inside.

The problem with Stalking people is that it tends to stop working properly if the target stands still for too long. Again, you don't get why but you can feel it, so you take the first opportunity you have to slip unnoticed under the table in the small office-like environment and stay there.

You've had time to notice all four participants: other than the captain there was an armoured, mean-looking woman, a man clad in hides whose hands are larger than your head, and a walking skeleton with its ocular orbits full of sparkling lightning, a gold crown on his head, a wicked staff with emerald inlaids and arcane runes carved in rubies, not to mention black and blue robes with silver and gold embroidery and pearls embedded on a rigid collar.

You think you found what you were looking for.

>Continue.
>>
"NERVOUS, ARE YOU CAPTAIN?", the otherworldly voice of the lich gives you another shiver, as if all the rain suddenly made you tremendously cold, even though it's actually still plenty warm outside, and inside too. You've seen enough undead to tell a lich from a mere skeleton, and you're pretty damn sure this is a magic user too, most likely very powerful, as undead tend to be when they have all the time in the world to perfect their craft and no puny, weak flesh to hold them back.

"Shut up you, we've been doing our share of the deal, where is yours?", the pirate answers, spitting on the ground to underline his point. If he dares spit any closer to your cloak...

"YOUR PART OF THE DEAL IS THAT YOU WILL SERVE ME AND MINE IS THAT I WILL ALLOW YOU TO INHABIT MY LANDS. I AM A FAIR RULER AND REWARD HARD WORKING SUBJECTS".

"We are not your subjects, we are the scourge of the Crystal sea!", and a fist slams on the table, the point of impact not far from your head, "We've raided for booty and captured ships and these goody two-shoes bastard settlers couldn't do a damn thing about it. But what about you? Where is your... Scary spooky skeleton army? I don't think you actually have one, I think you're just bluffing".

Some coarse laughter follows his statement, joined by an otherworldly, skeletal cackle, "WHY, QUITE THE OPPOSITE CAPTAIN. I SEE THREE SKELETONS JUST AROUND THIS TABLE, EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE TRAPPED BY SOME USELESS, FLABBY MEAT. WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO SUMMON MY SKELETAL MINIONS? RIGHT NOW?".

An embarrassed silence follows.

“Alright, we’ve got you what we could, but weapons are hard to come by. They don’t supply the royal army with those, they’ve already got them”.

“I TOLD YOU I NEED NOT WEAPONS”.

“How the hell are you going to raise an army then?”.

“THE FACT YOU CANNOT TELL IS WHY YOU ARE THE SUBJECT AND I AM THE RULER”.

No matter how interesting it is, you can't stay here. You have to get out: what if someone peeks under the table or, heck, even just throws a kick beneath it? You don't know why they would but you'd be in no position to flee or fight back properly, and you don't want to fight a lich right now.

But you can't just stand and leave, you need a chance, or a distraction...

"I don't like the tone of your voice, skeleton man", the pirate captain grunts, "We came to this place first, we set our haven first, we've raided for years and-".

"THESE LANDS WERE NEVER YOURS. I HAD ENOUGH OF YOUR FOOLISHNESS, NOW TELL ME ABOUT THIS ROYAL ARMY WHO INTENDS TO CONQUER WHAT IS NOT THEIRS TO CLAIM".

"We've told you what we knew, they're just some upstarts that are going to get killed by whatever-".

"THAT IS NOT WHAT I COMMANDED YOU. I DEMANDED YOU TO SPY, TO DISCERN THEIR REASONS. SHALL I MAKE AN EXAMPLE OF YOU AND APPOINT A MORE COMPETENT CAPTAIN?", you hear the air crackling and feel your hair stand on edge as electricity washes through your body. You're still dripping wet, and that didn't help, you almost hit your head on the table.

You hear the pirate take a mouthful of breath in to answer, until you hear an explosion coming from outside. It was enough to make the floor shake lightly, and you aren't the only one who heard it.

"What? What's going on?".

"MAYBE THIS HAVEN ISN'T AS SAFE AS YOU THOUGHT IT WAS, MY SOON TO BE EX CAPTAIN".

Here's your chance!

"What? What do you mean?".

"I AM AFRAID YOU HAVE OVERESTIMATED YOUR OWN ABILITIES AND UNDERESTIMATED THE ROYAL ARMY. FRANKLY I HAVE ALREADY COMPLAINED ABOUT YOUR LACK OF DEFENSIVE COUNTERMEASURES BUT YOU DID NOT LISTEN TO ME".

"You damned skeleton!".

While they are busy fighting, you roll out of the table and, in one smooth motion, you stand back up and open the window, letting the sound of the pelting rain fill the room as you nonchalantly toss your cloak over and sit on the edge, comfortably looking back at the pirates and the lich. Like you told yourself before, you don't care if they see you leaving.

Another explosion shakes the outside, and thanks to the open window it sounds a lot louder and closer. It most likely is: these must be the explosive barrels you’ve seen before, and if your hearing is to be trusted they exploded pretty much where you’ve seen them, meaning they were turned against the defenders, somehow. That’s why cool but predictable tricks don’t work, you have to be creative.

"Oh please don't worry, go meet your guests", you wave in that general direction as you take your sweet time to climb outside, "I can see myself out, I know the way".

Sometimes, the easiest way to make an escape is to be as obvious and flamboyant as possible, you have plenty of anecdotes to share on that regard, like that one guy who was found while sneaking and stared at the guard so hard that he just turned away and left without raising the alarm.

And now you're outside again and broke line of sight by stepping aside from the window. The watch towers are being abandoned and all able-bodied pirates are going to fight in front of the fort to try and put up what you feel must be a futile defense. You’ve heard plenty of battles from various distances and you know they’re not going to win this one.

You have two options now:

"Who was that? Who in the bloody seas of ash was that?".

"Who cares we have to fight! Go! Go!".

They hurriedly leave the room, followed by a skeletal cackle. You didn't really expect the lich to follow them, you weren't sure if it would do that or just leave. You're glad things went this way, though.

Because there's no way in hell you're going to let those adventurers get all the loot, you want your share.

You jump back inside the office and close the doors, confident they won't mind the creaking as they're getting ready to repel an assault and have more to worry about than someone stealing their valuables.

Most of the items in this room are actually quite tacky, now that you have time to properly examine your surroundings you can confirm it's just a hodgepodge of valuable things put all in the same room in a garish and rather pathetic attempt of looking rich or important.

You've seen how actually rich people decorate their houses: the foyers, the corridors and waiting rooms are all meant to showcase their heraldry, their family history, their achievements and to represent their political alliances through the ostentation of riches, frescoes, paintings and portraits and so on.

But no time to complain, you can fill your pockets, but you don't have a swag bag with you as you're supposed to travel light and will have to do the same. You can pick as much as you want, but too much will just force you to drop stuff in the wilderness, which you'd rather avoid. Besides, drenched in water as you are and with the rain being what it is, you’re already going to suffer enough just heading back to report.

You have to admit: stealing stuff feels good.

Okay, that came out wrong. How to put it right... Taking your reward for all the risks you ran is appropriate, even if such rewards belonged to someone else. After all, if all the risks and dangers you went through were to not pay nobody would try to be in your line of work, which...

Yeah, no, stealing stuff just feels good. You can't help it, you're just a thief at heart. You've become much more than just that, but at the base? An old-school thief, the kind that sneaks and steals and tips her hat as she leaves from the window, cape flowing in the night as the wind blows through your hair and you make your escape across the city roofs.

Aaaah, good memories.

The compass in particular grabs your attention, it's really beautiful and shiny, and it's actually a bit weird too: it doesn't just show the cardinal directions, there's some more symbols that are quite unfamiliar to you. But most of all it's precious: solid gold, shiny insides, all around valuable.

You acquire the tiara and put it on your head because that at least will keep your hair in check a little, and sling the coral horn across your chest. You then grab the silver dagger and secure its ivory scabbard to your belt, opposite to your sword. Good thing you didn't have to draw it at all, by the way.

For a moment, you idly wonder if this is the kind of silver dagger that wizard friend of yours is interested in. She mentioned something about making a gift to a ghost. Yeah, sounds crazy, which is normal for a wizard. Still, you're not going all the way to Geffen just to ask her, she'll have to wait.

More booming and the clash of steel come from outside the office, along with blasts, explosions, the cracking of wood, the crumbling of platforms and the floor shaking. You frown, they're going to take the fort down if they're not careful.

>Screw these guys, get the hell out of dodge.
>You're going to raid just one room upstairs. Just one!
>Other?

You wouldn't even know where to put more loot on yourself, you've suffered the punishment for being too greedy more than once and don't really want to make that kind of mistake any longer, especially not today, not after all the trouble you've been through to be so cool and mature as you are now.

Jumping out of the window, you dash towards the palisade and climb it as all sorts of chaos ensues behind you. Plenty of reinforcements have arrived and the area is swarming with royal army soldiers following in the adventurers' spearhead. Those pirates never stood a chance.

You stand perched on top of the palisade for a bit, watching the scene of battle unfold beneath you as the heavy rain keeps pelting the battleground and your very figure. Then you rise on your feet, take a deep breath and somersault back, landing on the ground below.

Your cape flutters up as you absorb the shock, waiting until all the energy is properly dissolved before standing back up. You really should avoid doing this kind of thing when you're carrying loot and it's raining so heavily, but you wanted to see if you could actually bring that much with yourself without ill effects.

That and you never leave a scene without making a suitable impression.

All in all you're quite satisfied: you've learned something about these pirates, and it was indeed quite fishy as the fluffy-tailed lieutenant said. You're just a bit disappointed that you haven't found Keshanberk, but then again you suppose you don't just stumble on a magical sword. Or, well, you actually can and many people do it, but some kind of magical swords are just more... Magical and rare to stumble upon than others.

You remember asking some cambion girl to tell you if she ever came across it, she was an explorer of sorts albeit comically inexperienced. You chuckle as you start to head back towards Maner, while you appreciate her attitude what are the chances that she'll just stumble across it?

Honestly.

And thank you for participating in my April's fools run!

I've actually had this in mind for a long while and was just waiting for the right moment to pull it off. I'm sorry the session was short but I have stuff to do in the morning. I'm still glad I could run at all and that you followed.

You even caught up on who you were playing as, that makes me happy! You are paying attention!

Of course we paid attention! Thanks for running, btw.

Now the question is, how will this special affect the rest of the quest?

I actually closed the thread when it was clear we weren't playing as Lillith.
I don't even remember what the sword girl's name was.
