The guild is lively, as it should be.
Busy adventurers, townsfolk posting jobs or speaking with people.
A recent and steady stream of people with towels and fresh clothing.

It's good to see.
Even after a close call- only a few days really- life is back to normal. Relaxing.

Of course, relaxing for you and relaxing for a woodcutter mean very different things.
You imagine he'd like beer, relaxing evenings, time with his family. A spot of gambling at the inn.
You want to run screaming through the woods and eat something large and dangerous, and then cross the country and see new things.
Relaxing!

You wave to the barman, pointing down the side hall with a questioning look. He returns a smile and a nod, and you take that as a go ahead, skittering into the corridor and knocking at the door.

You get a weak reply of "Come in," and swing it open, stuffing your fleshy bits into the room and leaving the spidery ones outside.
Edmund looks up wearily from a desk absolutely apocalyptic with paperwork, quill in hand and bags beneath each eye.
You shoot for a warm smile.

"Good afternoon, yes?"
"Now, maybe. Any break from this is a blessing."

>That bad? What is it?
>Thank your spidery gods for not having paperwork. Wolf related questions, now.
>Quills aren't your specialty, but you're all too familiar with office busywork. Maybe you could help?

You make a show of pity- and you do genuinely feel bad for him.
You're just exulting a little bit inside because it isn't you stuck behind a desk. That's only natural right?

"Is it that bad?"
He gestures helplessly to his desk, ink-stained hands wide.
"Is it war?" Sheszka chimes in, voice quiet.

He blinks, but shakes his head.
"No, not like that."
"Can you tell us, then? What is all this?"
He makes a face at the papers, sighing.

"Just the aftermath. Waking up all the adventurers, calling an emergency- we have to pay everyone, you know? Even you. Especially you, really."
"And that takes so much paper?"
"They want a reason for spending so much. They want to know how it was all spent, and why so quickly, and if relations with the forest are bad, and so on and so on."

"That seems like a waste of paper, yes."
"A waste of my time, to boot. They even want the bath justified."
"They didn't like the 'make money' reason?"
"'Oh, you really think that many people will blah blah blah-' The messenger they sent with all this has paid for a bath three times in as many days."

"Tell them that, then."
"Oh, I will. Uh- I assume you didn't come here to listen to me wax poetic on my superiors."

"None of that rhymed, though?"
"You can have poems without rhymes, I think."
"How would you remember them, then?"

You opt to ignore the three-way discussion occurring behind you.
"I came about the wolves, actually."
"Ah."
"Mhm. Were they telling you the same?"
"Doom and death and the end of all happiness?"
"Just theirs."
"Yeah, that sounds about right."

You've stopped using speech indicators again!

I have no idea who is talking whenever more than two people are in the conversation!
>>
>>39091709
Lyra, Sheszka, Edmund, Lyra, Edmund, Lyra, Edmund, Lyra, Edmund, Lyra, Edmund, Lyra, Edmund, Nin Sheska Jin in no particular order, Lyra, Edmund, Lyra, Edmund, Lyra, Edmund

Not hard to parse and which of the trio was speaking in what order really isn't that important in the scheme of things.
>>
>>39091768
It would be nice for future reference to have it actually indicated.
>>
You sigh, running a hand through your hair.
It's getting a bit messy again- Next time you clean up, you'll have to remind yourself to get some help tying it back.

"Have you thought about what to do with them?"
"What exactly would you do with a bunch of mopey wolves?"
"Jobs, maybe?"

He glances up, eyebrow raised.
"Are you- No, you are serious. What kind of jobs would I even give them?"
"Are you serious? They are hunters, yes? And used to belonging to a pack, and following orders. Have them guard something, have them hunt for the village. Send them with adventurers who have to clear out animals, as scouts."

He leans back in his chair, folding his arms and leaving ink all over his shirt.

He sighs at that, and drops the quill on a thick stained pad next top a bottle of ink.
"The ideas aren't bad. And I can't say I didn't consider it."
"...but?"
"Well- We just fought them. Days ago. They attacked the village. The adventurers are a little wary, and the harpies... I think they're still sour over the whole 'weak' business. There's been a lot of strutting and harpies going hunting. Dunno how they'd feel about keeping them around. Or if they did, how the wolves would feel about harpies trying to lord it over them."

"Ugh."
"Yeah, bad blood is a bitch."
"Maybe the forest- Nn. Maybe not."
The moths were wary of Sheszka even with you. Dumping a small pile of them anywhere probably wouldn't work, would it?

"I will talk to Lia, yes? Maybe she can help."
"If you like. We're kind of thin on options."
"If nothing else, I'll just take them with me. Better than having them sit depressed somewhere."
"The hells would you even do with them?"
"Guard caravans with me? They could sign on as adventurers, maybe. As long as they left, people wouldn't be too upset?"
"Maybe."

"Yes. It's still a big mess."
"Mhm."

Well, nobody DIED on the village side, so I can't imagine blood is that bad around here.

Just injured pride.

>>
>>39092079

'Bad blood' often refers to injured pride, but in this case it's a little more than that. It doesn't really matter that nobody actually died, because the wolves were fully intending to kill most (if not all) of them and expel any survivors. That's going to enkindle a massive amount of animosity, because, holy shit, THE WOLVES TRIED TO KILL EVERYONE THERE.

Most people aren't going to be willing to have any sort of non-lethal contact with someone who intended to murder their friends and family, let alone be willing to work civilly with them. Even if the Oakringers understand the pack dynamic - and that the wolves really didn't have an actual choice in the matter - I doubt they'll be anywhere near willing to trust them.
>>
>>39092254
s'fiiiiine.

People live with violent ex-convicts all the time.
>>
>>39092383

I was born in Michigan so I can confirm this as true.

Which part of Michigan? Any part.
>>
>>39092383

But do they live with violent ex-cons who tried to kill specifically them or their family?

That situation's a lot rarer and (in my observations) only happens when the ex-con is a relative themself, which doesn't apply here.
>>
>>39092474
for examples of that, we'd have to look much further back in history, where attackers were occasionally used as anything ranging from full citizens to bonded workers after being driven back.
>>
Also, I think despite how nice they are, harpies are in fact relatively territorial, they are fine with spiders and people because both acknowledge this as harpy territory and as such don't really fuck with it short of randomly blowing parts of it up for magical reasons. The wolves flat out declared ownership on harpy territory because manifest destiny, because the harpies haven't been witnessed murdering everything ever, clearly they've lost there right to property ownership. If you think about it, wolves are all like a bunch of furry Ayn Rands...
>>
>>39092512
Your argument falls apart when you address pack structure and the lack of individual determination.

Also, the ellipses. That was the nail in the coffin.
>>
>>39092474
Except the wolves weren't specifically aiming for individuals. They were targeting the town as a whole on the basis of them being "weak". The lack of casualties and the fact that they were driven by a single Alpha would probably help people be less angry towards them.

I think the main thing is that no matter what happened, no one (I think) died and the town didn't even suffer any damage. Considering Lyra's contribution in battle, I think most people would give serious consideration toward Lyra's recommendations of what to do with the prisoners, if only because she was the one who killed their leader and is responsible for their situation.

You wish him luck with his papers, and see yourself out the door.
It's hard not to make beeping noises as you back up.

With one alley of opportunity closed, you head for option two: Jin's mother Lia.
Whether she's just old enough or wise enough or just has enough friends who are spiders, people apparently listen to her. Which is rather important, you suppose.

Jin hops to your shoulders as you go to knock, squawking about being home before you've laid hands on the door.
You wait for a response before pushing your way inside, the owl harpy perched above you ducking to avoid the doorway.

"Good morning, Lia."
"Good morning, trouble."

"Her name is Lyra, yes."
Sometimes, sarcasm goes over Jin's head.

"And sometimes, I think that her mother might have named her wrong. What have you done now, dear?"
"Why does everyone assume that I have done something?"
"Because you have a look on your face like you're guilty."
"Maybe I just feel bad about making problems for people?"
"Mhm. So what problem have you brought me today?"

She's still smiling. Actually smiling. Maybe she gets bored?
"About the wolves, yes."
"Oh?"
"And what to do with them."

"And?"
"Well- we can't send them back, can we?"
"Why not?"
"They broke the pact, yes? Noone will take them."
"Then maybe they shouldn't have broken it?"

You rub your temples.
"I think... that following orders is a bad excuse, yes? People are responsible for themselves."
"Mhm."
"But I think that packs- even other ones- would not be kind to someone who ran rather than obey."
"That is probably right, yes."
>>

>>39092578
Oh, thats just a force of habit, I should definitely stop doing that, don't take it for anything other than a fancily dressed up period. >>
>>39092628
You let out a sigh.
"Would the harpies accept them? Eventually? And let them stay?"
"That is not much of a plan. Without an alpha, wolves tend to be... aimless? The depression is part of that, I think."
"You've talked to them?"
"I was helping the guild with translating."

"What can we do, then? Can a harpy take them? Should I? I thought that would be a last resort, yes? This keeps getting messier."
"Do you really plan on being followed around by a huge pack of wolves?"
"There's only five, yes? And Sheszka, but she's already family."
"And you think they won't have children? A pack that isn't full is weak."
"Uhm."
"Mhm. And how fast did you grow up, yes?"
"So there would be a lot wolves, very fast."

"Only as many as their hunting could manage. Which is a problem all it's own. There's a reason the forest was divvied up."
"Ngh. What If I took them and made them stay here? Would they listen? I plan on coming back, yes."
"Maybe. It's one of the less terrible plans so far."
"I don't know what to do."

"It isn't your responsibility, Lyra. I know that you are a grand idiot, but you are still young."
"But if I just leave this... It won't end well for them, will it. The adventurers don't want them. They'll go back across the river and die, yes?"
"It's possible."
"I don't like this. The forest is stupid."
"It has been stupid for a long time."

You growl in frustration, tugging at your hair.
"I will take them. As alpha, yes?"
"Oh?"
"That is a first step."
"And the next."

"Next, I find out what to do with them."
She nods along, a little smile of approval on her face.
That's something, at least.

"Lia, Can I ask a favour, please."
"I'll do what I can, I suppose."
"Can you ask the harpies around town? About them staying, yes."
"I cannot promise any miracles."

"I know. But... Let people know what would happen to them otherwise. It is easy to try and push it away as 'not my problem' but I think people will help if just to not feel bad about it later."

She giggles a bit. How old is she, anyway? No, she's mom's friend. Thirty or so, then? She still seems young.
"Maybe they can look after them if we can get them to try and not build a full pack all over again."
"It's a matter of safety for them."
"It's instincts, isn't it? They need it across the river to protect themselves from... themselves, really. But they don't need that here."
"Oh. Well done! I might be able to do something with that, yes."
"Please."

"Of course, dear. Can I bother you for a boost?"
You offer your arm, and the older owl hops easily to it, talons wrapping around chitin and holding her in place as you head back outside.

"All healed up, then?"
"Finally, yes."
"I heard that Nialla didn't bother to tell you what would happen."
"She told me eventually."
"When?"
"When I was pulling off pieces of chitin and panicking, yes."

She laughs as you throw her into the sky, wings spreading and hurling her through the air.

The wolves who fled into the forest are probably in a similar situation to when we found Sheszka.

Can we do something about them?
>>
>>39094077
Ooh, good point. We might not be able to save everyone later on, but right now I think this is something within our means that we should see to. We could easily send Sheszka and Jin out to scout and follow their trail. Shouldn't be too hard to find wounded, hungry wolves, and I'm sure they'll listen to the person who ripped their alpha in half.

I dunno... they're sentient beings too. We should ask them what they want and see about getting them settled in town with shelters/houses of their own and someone to help take care of them. I'm sure they'd be a great source of manual labor and be good at hunting.

Well, there's a reason there aren't that many arachne.
They're intense predators and they need to be spread out or they overtax their region.

I don't know whether or not distribution of wolves would work without doing some fucking 4x game food matrixes.

>>39094283
and that.
>>
>>39094283
Could just go over the river and beat the wolf clan heads into submission till they accept them back.
>>
>>39094310
I think the only reason the wolves have any food is because of the constant fighting.
Like, if they stopped killing each other at this point, how soon would they overhunt their area?

Is the pastebin out of date, or is Jin actually a higher level than us right now?

This was the clan whose Alpha decided they're too weak to survive in the Wolfwoods part of the Forest.

This means that a pack lead by a Tier 4 with several Tier 3s is weaksauce.

Remember that Lyra would have died if it weren't for the Demi-God of Protection's Blessing.

We ain't gonna be stompin' no wolf tribes anytime soon anon.

Knowing your mother-
And you do, in fact, know your mother-
There are only a few places she could be in the afternoon.

So you do the reasonable thing and check the guilds training room for signs that she's there.
Like intense sobbing, or adventurers with broken looks in their eyes.

Luckily for the adventuring population of Oakring, your mother has opted to work with Aria on this fine day.
Which doesn't mean they aren't watching or flinching, just that they are all currently unharmed.

And not crying, which is always nice.

You wait for them to take a break, standing on the sidelines and being completely obvious because you're a huge spider-person.
"Lyra."
"Mom. I needed to talk, yes."
"That's nice, yes."

She throws you a training spear.
Oh.

It's too late to run, isn't it.

"Get in the ring, yes."
Aria manages to haul herself out, giving you a look of pity on the way.
Don't do that- You know you're out of practice, but really, it'll be fine. You're sure.
Jin hops free, taking a spot ringside where she has a good view.

"Can I say things now?"
"You already are, yes?"
"You know what I mean."
"It can't wait?"
"Are you going to leave me capable of walking and speaking?"

"You can talk now, yes."
>>
>>39094737
"It's about what to do with the wolves, yes."
"Oh?"
"I'll take them."
"You'll take them where, exactly."
"Wherever, yes. I beat the leader-"
"I heard."

"So I can claim to be their alpha."
"Mhm?"
"Lia is speaking to the harpies. I thought I could order them to stay in the town, yes."
"And you think they will?"
"I think they want to be safe. And they never will across the river."

"It could work. What will you do if it doesn't?"
"Take them with me. Or, if you'll let them- Send them with the boys."
"With your brothers?"
"All they do is hunt, yes. Wolves wouldn't change that."

"They like to live in packs, yes."
"For safety. But there isn't huge fights for land and food, here."
"Alright."
"Alright?"
"I'll agree, yes? I'll go along with what happens."

"Thank-you!"
"Now, please show me that you are strong enough to keep them in line."

Mom's too fast to lose even in a remotely fair fight so instead of trying fancy spearplay, let's just take advantage of our massive strength and force her to exchange hits.

You swallow hard.
You just beat a ton of wolves, right? C'mon, you can do this.
Nothing to be afraid of!

Mom is smiling again. With her crazy eyes.

You switch your grip on the spear, crouching low.
She's going to wait?

Fine. Okay. Yes.
Let's go.

You skitter forwards, a burst of sand accompanying your sudden movement, eight legs carrying you into battle.
Your mother explodes towards you- no sign of anything approaching weariness- nothing to show you she'd just spent gods know how long beating your sister into the dirt.

You try for a poke, thrusting down, then up, trying to weave under her guard- she smashed down on the training weapon hard enough to numb your arm, driving in to swing at you.

You catch it on your shield, unhurriedly throwing the blow over you, stepping into her weakened stance and pushing- neither of you have weapons in a good position, body slamming each other to make space. You catch grip on her arm, digging in your legs and throwing her back, though the utterly thrilled look on her face does little to assure your ego.

Her weapon whirls in again, and you bring your own around, that classic movie moment of colliding weapons and the ringing tone of metal on metal. You move to push in again as she dances away- how the hell can she do things like that with eight legs?

You jab again, forcing her into parries and pushing her towards the edge of the circle.
>>
>>39095818
She shifts her stance down, and your next attempt is flung past her, her spear shifting to slap you with it's base, cracking across your armoured arm. You drive in again, hoping to use your strength against her, tangling her legs with your own in the hopes of pulling her into wrestling with you again.

She casts away her spear, and there's a beautiful moment where you're winning, hands clenched in hers, pushing her down- And then she twists one hand free, throwing herself around to your side and dragging your head down into a lock.

You struggle for a bit before you tap her elbow, her sign to let you go once more.

You both drop to the ground, breathing hard- which is doing phenomenal things for your self-esteem- and she grins at you again.

"The spear work is better, yes. You're using the shield now."
"I have to-"
"That is the point. But you aren't good enough with your hands."
Oh gods.

"Come back every morning. Until you leave. Lessons are important."
You groan, aware of the slow burning of your arms and legs.

This is going to be rough.

If there is ever interest in assisting boat traffic up the river again to Lamia territory we could probably build a lock system relatively easily to bypass the waterfall thanks to our Earth magic.

Engineering work is another source of income that we could rely on upon the road if we get injured again.

Sheets have been updated for the wolf-raid.
So yes she is.
However you should remember that spiders work from a much higher baseline than wolves and harpies. We're basically one evo higher than her and Shezka (and the rest of our party is going down the grades further)
>>
>>39096154
On the other hand, we'll be having a nice stroll through the countryside, while she's going to dive into the old ruins with who knows what monsters inside.
She's on a base disadvantage, but still going to be advancing.

We need to find a way to get some snake training done before we set out. The cold weather will make it difficult but I think there are ways around that.

Warm up snake and give her a windbreaker or clothes that will help keep her warm for a bit.
Maybe we can make the equivalent of felt adhesive to stick to cover most of the snake bits except the belly.

Hand off to Harpy for air drop on target to poison. Yes I know snake is afraid of heights and I'm not suggesting we just drop her from 30 ft up in the air. It will be harder for Jin but she can swoop in and land Esmerelda on a target.
