“No,” a bright, youthful voice opines from behind your shoulder. “That was fucking AWESOME.”

A few minutes ago you tripped and put your foot right through the brittle, thin layer of ice-cold professionalism upon which a legion of reanimated warship spirits have been treading very cautiously upon; and it's only by divine providence that you managed to avoid pulling anyone in with you *and* extracted your foot before one of the demons below bit it clean off.

Even Hate, so seldom encumbered by concerns common to mere mortals would not rate that performance as 'fucking awesome.' Had Hornet loosed her black arrow and put it through the back of Kaga's head, it might well have sparked a continuation of WWII; a horrifically violent slaughter with every man, woman and Marine on Yokosuka Naval Base caught in the hellacious crossfire. No human intellect could applaud such a thing – it would take a primal force of nature, the antithesis of “read the atmosphere” made manifest upon the physical plane; the avatar of some heathen God of opposition, of negative spaces. Hades, keeper of the underworld. Mab, Queen of Air and Darkness.

Or, in this case, the Goddess of Zero Fucks To Give: the USS Samuel B. Roberts.

You turn to look at her, the cold, prickling chill of dread racing up your spine as you comprehend just how woefully inadequate your doomsday prediction had been. Kaga wasn't close to injury – she was close to being a smoking oil-smear on the sand; her and every other poor damned Japanese shipgirl in attendance. The doom of fleets and death-knell of nations stands before you, her slate-grey eyes bright with childish enthusiasm. “YOU WERE LIKE-” she brackets her face with both hands, fingertips pointed at you - “LOOK AT ME. NOW-” her hands snap to the side, channeling her gaze askance - “LOOK AT THE CORGIS. NOW-” she leans in, her eyes boring you like a diamond-carbon drillbit - “BACK TO *ME.*” Her hands and terrifying intensity drop away, and suddenly she's a ten-year old redhead again, pigtailed, freckle-faced and absolutely adorable. She clutches at her cheeks, dancing from foot to foot. “OhmygodthatwasfukkinRADICAL!”

Most of the time, you're good at walking on ice – Annapolis is four years of rigorous practice in the art. You can walk on ice all day; and with the quiet repressed traumas of Arizona and Hornet, you *do.* But Sammy? She's a roman candle of new crazy every minute, and you're always three steps behind trying to parse it, much less dodge. You shoot a glance at Hate, who looks up from clipping collars onto Corgis long enough to deny teaching Sammy 90s catchphrases with a listless shrug.

“And the boats, they were cold,” Sammy says with adoration. “Admiral! Have you ever heard the sound of thirty cigarette butts hitting the floor at the same time?”

You blink as your mental wheels squeal sans traction. “Ye- how do you-”

“It was like that,” she says, grabbing your shirt and shaking you back and forth; your head lolling about before the impossible strength in her skinny arms. “LIKE FORTY DOG-BUTTS HITTING THE SAND AT THE SAME TIME, IT WAS BITCHIN.”

She stops shaking you long enough to haul you in, her forehead clinking against yours; cold grey eyes spinning up with an almost audible whirr.

“I WANT ONE.”

Since last thread, I have read up somewhat on what's happened and what the living hell is up with this setting. I still know very little of the specifics, but at least I'm grounded enough to know this much:
>Y'all are nuts
>I want in

Let's see if we can shape up and redeem ourselves of our cosmic blunder that nearly got everyone killed or consigned to the baths for the next eight hours, by shaping this bunch of mis-ships into the finest navy to ever grace the ocean (short of the Royal Navy, but let's face it, you don't beat Britanian shipgirls).

Two points though? One: If the Yamato shows up, there had damn well better be a big show of it. If I know the Japanese military, the spirit of their greatest flagship, possibly the greatest and most powerful battleship ever known, returning to port would be met with applause, tears, music and possibly a parade in her honour.

Two: I wonder how tall ships come back? The HMS Victory would be a sight to see...

>>
>>39115318
True. Haven't museum ships returned though?

And to be honest, Portsmouth being attacked would certainly cause upper lips to stiffen in Blighty. We're not a proud nation anymore, but if anything makes the British people straighten their backs and suddenly remember, "We built the biggest Empire the world has ever known," it's some asshole messing with us. I dread to think of and long to see the kind of reaction the Royal Navy and the nation would have to the spirits of the ships that ruled the waves returning would provoke.

Museum ships? No. Planefag mentioned in an earlier thread that noone would even be sure how a shipslut would come to be if its original was still afloat--or rather, wouldn't want to know.= what would show up.

So as cool as it would be to see the Iowa-class girls or the Texas or North Carolina back, I doubt we'll see it happen anytime soon.

Personally, I'd like to see Texas return. WWI-era dreadnought battleships are sex

>Yamato.
>Greatest.

You realize that Yamato accomplished approximately squat, and that despite outmassing the Iowas by 20,000 tons, it's still a somewhat open question as to whether the Yamatos would have won a straight fight?

As I understand, if the Iowa knew exactly what it was facing, it could just stand off at long range, and use radar gunnery to murder Yamato's face off. Closer-in (as standard US doctrine stated), it's a more open question, but Yamato had her flaws, like the traditionally terrible Japanese damage control.

Also, did some counting. I haven't subtracted out museum ships from the totals (and the count may be off anyways, particularly with regards to ship classes which were completed post-war), but the Japanese should have about 430 shipgirl candidates, the Americans around 1700*. I've forgotten: in Planefag-verse, are ships which got sent to the breakers still shipgirl candidates?

*It's kind of impressive that America had more Fletchers than Japan had destroyers; Clemsons too, if you subtract the Matsus and Tachibanas from the Japanese total (they're kinda light and slow to be counted as true DDs).

For the USN:
24 CVs, 9 CVLs, 119 CVEs
26 BBs (10 of them fast battleships)
32 CAs (14 of those the post-treaty Baltimores)
1 CB (that crazy Alaska)
52 CLs
287 small, WW1-era DDs (everything up to the Farragut class)
394 other DDs
458 DDEs

I also forgot to add in 348 submarines. Whoops.

For the IJN
11 CVs, 9 CVLs, 10 CVEs
8 BBs (including the Ise class, which were converted to these crazy battleship-carrier hybrids later on)
4 "BBs" (you know who these are)
18 CAs, 20 CLs, 4 very-questionable CLs
137 DDs
32 "DDs" which I'd classify as DDEs
184 submarines (also forgotten in that count)

Again, this is a very rough count, based on less than an hour of Wikipedia searching. For example, I'm still not sure exactly how many Essexes made it in for WWII.

I thought the USS Iowa was that Abyssal girl from a few threads back? Or was that the Idaho or something?

>>39115683
The Yamato was cruelly denied her chance to shine by factors beyond her control. By all rights, her sheer armour and firepower should have raped the ever-living crap out of anything afloat, but her fuel consumption and Japan's unwillingness to put its flagship in danger stopped her from being used until Okinawa, which she didn't even get to. When the Musashi was sunk, the American admirals shit a collective cinder block with the words, "She took HOW MUCH damage before she went down?!" engraved on it, so you can imagine the psychological impact alone, that a Yamato-class would inflict just by coming into visual range, much less firing its battery.

I think it was mentioned a few threads back, that she'd probably feel tremendously pressured, if she returned, with everyone pinning their hopes on the single greatest expression of battleship naval dominance to ever grace the seven seas, all despite her utterly unproven track record. Frankly, I think it's that mix of the feeling of invincibility, outstanding potential and unproven nervousness that endears me to her. With the right fighter and destroyer/light cruiser cover, she has the potential to sweep any opposition aside.

And hey, we can totally modernise things like damage control, right?

Jeezus though, that's a lot of ships... Kind of highlights why Japan lost, outside of tactics that were a mix of overly-complicated and naively simplistic.

There's two USS Iowas. The Abyssal girl was BB-4, if I remember right.

Also, "raped anything afloat" is still an open question. The Iowa's 16" guns, for example, had better long-range penetration than the Yamato's 18" guns, etc. As I understand, part of what went on with the Musashi was that she simply had huge reserves of buoyancy, and thus was able to keep afloat despite having had her combat capacity greatly diminished. The Yamato was attacked more deliberately, with most of the torpedoes hitting one side instead of both.

>>39115890
Some of the recent threads have made rather convincing cases for Brittania ruling the waves.

The Japanese went after the US battleships for a reason. Our carriers got real good, real fast, for a reason. The reason? Battleships had previously been considered the queens of the oceans, right? So the Japs went for ours, right? Right. And then we turned around and fucked their faces at Midway, and Coral Sea, and basically everything after Pearl.

See picture, Anon. The Padishah Emperor is disgusted that you've bought into the Nippon stronk bull.

The very idea of pairing Sammy – the incarnation of uninhibited battle-lust made manifest – with the hyperactive souls of insanely-aggressive PT boats; plywood pipsqueaks that hunted battleships – should terrify you...

… but Hate's barely better than Sammy, when you get right down to it. Mainly because Hate can be amused by women and open access to explosives test ranges; whereas Sammy is rather harder to keep occupied. When the corgis started showing up, they gravitated towards him, and that was enough to keep him busy – until they began arriving en-masse, and the hatred began bubbling up from the dark peat-bog of his soul. You really need to split that load; you really, REALLY need to keep Sammy occupied... and maybe they'll keep her too busy chasing THEM to cause much trouble.

Maybe.

“Sammy,” you say seriously. “How'd you like to be a flotilla leader?”

She blinks, and pulls away from you; pinning you with a dubious look lest you try and scurry away underneath your HQ rock. “What?”

“You know, flotilla. Light cruisers lead destroyer flotillas, so a destroyer escort ought to have...”

“.... torpedo boats,” she finishes – and then her face lights up as she realizes what you're saying. “You mean-”

“Five, at least,” you instruct.

Sammy shrieks with absolutely pure, wicked glee before sprinting off across the beach, kicking up sand in her wake as she rushes for Hate. The Corporal sees her coming in time to flinch, but instead of knocking him prone like she usually does, she just orders him to stand still with the forty-odd leashed corgis as she inspects each one for their suitability and qualifications.

You turn your gaze back out to sea, past the pilings marking the edge of the vast torpedo practice range, and wonder what you should do while you wait.

A sudden shipgirl influx is pretty much the only way that could happen now, due to the MoD's rigidly enforced "we can't have nice things" rule. The Type 45's are OK, but it's been 3 decades since the Aegis system went into action, so merely reach the level of About Bloody Time.
Then there's the whole clusterfuck over the QE-class. A 'supercarrier' running on gas fucking tubines, with no catapult (because we're too goddamn cheap to mount it) so we're stuck with the shittiest variant of the already over-expensive F-35 because we can't CATOBAR.And we can't even build them on time, so we have to rent space on the FUCKING FROGS' carriers to project airpower.

you know if theres anything that recent escapades have reinforced in my mind, its the fact that the co should not/can not be the 'enforcer', he needs someone else to do it.

that kind of 'division of labour' is crucial psychologically for leading groups of personnel most effectively. you need discipline for people to do their jobs, and you need them to listen to what their jobs are gona be. if they hate your guts, following orders to the best of their ability will be an issue. if they rack disciprin, 'the best of their ability' might not go so far.

this trap is neatly sidestepped however by having *two* people work different sides of the same coin. and that's how co's and nco's were born timmy

to that end, I think it would be very well to take hates advice and get ourselves a secretary ship first mate who can be the enforcer.

The issue with all the naval shambles of the Pacific War, was that Japan failed to recognise a fundamental fact: Combined Arms trumps specialisation! If they were going to rely so heavily on their battleships, they should have rigged their carrier squadrons to be exclusively or at least heavily inclined towards air dominance. Once the US planes were too busy dodging Zeros to torpedo a goddamn thing, then the battleships could move in unmolested and do their thing. Keep in mind, the Japanese put more planes in the air at Midway; the US just had the drop on them, tore the airpower apart, re-armed for anti-ship and then took out the Jap carriers, prompting the rest of the fleet to withdraw. If Japan had got the stand-up fight it wanted... Well, given the fact that I don't believe the US had anything heavier than a Heavy Cruiser at Midway, outside of their carriers, it would have been a massacre.

You're right about the fire control, radar and damage control, but keep in mind that the Yamato was modernised at one point, to compensate for those deficiencies. Only issue was that by the time she could put those to the test, it was already too late and all the 74,000 ton, armour-plated doom in the world won't save you from the kind of odds she was facing.

From what I know, their carrier base at least was not that good. Their carrier aircraft too compared to the US which were heavily armored and in some models outgunned the British.

That is utterly wrong. How the steel is made COMPLETELY affects how it holds up and how long it will last. German-made steel was of objectively better quality than Soviet-made steel in the 1970s, just as an example.

Nobody, coming into WWII, had any fucking clue about how dominant carriers would be. Prewar Japanese doctrine envisioned luring the Americans into a long-range battleship sortie to rescue the Philippines; this navy would be whittled down by the aircraft carriers, night-time torpedo strikes, and submarine attacks, until the much better rested, and closer-to-home Japanese battle line could engage and destroy the American navy.

That kinda got torpedoed at Pearl Harbor when America woke up to the smell of sunken battleships.

The Japanese, on the other hand, never quite got over the concept of the decisive battle, and continued to believe the battleships would be decisive, even after late 1943, when a huge wave of newly built Essex and Independence-class aircraft carriers took to the seas.

>>39116422
I doubt it has anything to do with the ore. What he is probably referring to is the grade of steel used; Americans used Krupp plate (probably Krupp cemented plate), with superior characteristics to earlier nickel steels and Harveyized steel.

>>39116460
Not super familiar with it; the RN kept mostly to the Atlantic and Mediterranean. I think maybe part of it was that the RN didn't have the best carrier-borne aircraft, and would have been mauled trying to fight the Japanese.

Actually, not in this case.

You don't just use "Steel" for warship armour. You use Specifically treated and cemented plates of steel that have gone through very specific processes to be both hard enough to stop shots and flexible enough to not shatter. The most common type on battleships was known generally as Krupp Cemented armour.

Now, *most* battleships had their armour belts composed of single, thick plates, which permitted the full strength of the armour. The Japanese in the 1930s and 1940s, however, were incapable of producing single plates of the thickness they desired for the Yamatos; the result being they had to use multiple thinner plates fixed together. This reduced the overall effectiveness of the Yamato-class's armour below that of what one would expect it to be simply going off sheer thickness. In practice, testing showed it had roughly 70-80% of the strength one would presume from it's total thickness.
>>
>>39116600
That I'll believe.

>>39116460
Their carrier doctrine lagged because they never developed the concept of the carrier being the power of the fleet, despite being the navy that pulled off the attack on Taranto. For pretty much most of the war the RN's carriers supported their fleets, not the other way around. They were thus assigned a lower priority for development which is why they still had Sea Hurricanes as front-line carrier aircraft in 1941.

Their surface fleet was very good, however. It performed admirably in all theatres, and pretty much owned the Med despite the Italians having a local power superiority.

We made do because all our fucking battleships got sunk at Pearl. We were just as much in love with the big gun until Pearl, which showed us two things.

First, that aircraft carriers could sink battleships with near impunity
Second, that we had no choice but to rely on aircraft carriers, because we had no fucking battleships left.

Pearl was an enormous shock to the US. Overnight, almost the entire battleship fleet that we had relied on to keep US shores safe had been sunk at anchor: we were defenseless before the Japanese. In naval terms, we were completely screwed: the remaining Pacific Fleet could not have dealt with the Kido Butai and the Japanese battle line: the only thing keeping us safe was the fact that Japan's logistics were stretched to the outermost limit.

The Royal Navy during WWII was in a weird position during much of WWII.

It was, up till the time, rightly considered the strongest and more than likely best trained navy at the time. It is the longest permanent naval force of any country and had/has a reputation to match.

However it spent much of WWII with no proper enemy to fight, at least not how the pre-war theorists thought. Germany had litle to no proper surface fleet to speak of and much of that was actually sunk by the Norwegians.

They also had to contend with the Italian navy, but the Italians had been trained to fight the French and their tactics showed, the RN generally beat them.

The RN's greatest contribution to the war was keeping the U-boats from completely starving Britain.

Also, parts of this are probably wrong feel free to correct any parts that are.
>>
>>39116600
I'm actually wondering about how battleships are constructed. My best guess is that you have a steel frame, and possibly a thin hull, to which big steel armor plates are attached. I find it very unlikely that the belt is made all of one piece: A, that would be a gigantic pain to cast, and B, it'd mean replacing the whole damn hull each time you got holed.

I'm assuming "multiple plates" in this case meant "Japan couldn't cast a single 16" thick plate, so they made do with 2 8" plates, or 4 4" plates, or something like that".

Realistically, how bad would it have been if the USN lost at Midway?

>We made do because all our fucking battleships got sunk at Pearl. We were just as much in love with the big gun until Pearl, which showed us two things.
>First, that aircraft carriers could sink battleships with near impunity
>Second, that we had no choice but to rely on aircraft carriers, because we had no fucking battleships left.

Not exactly. We had several battleships left; Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Maryland were all effectively undamaged while Colorado was finishing up a refit in Puget Sound, in addition to all of the battleships that had been transferred to the Atlantic Fleet (and would in time be transferred back to the Pacific during 1942). If we had wanted to rely on our battleships, we would have been able to have them returned to service by the beginning of 1943. They only took so long because they were assigned a low priority at the shipyards.

What we lacked were A) confidence in our battleships and B) the support structure for them. Simply put, Nimitz didn't trust the battleships under his command after Pearl Harbor. Despite most of their damage control systems performing well in the face of overkill, the destruction of the Arizona coupled with the sinking of the California shook his confidence in the ability of his battleships to withstand combat damage, so he simply didn't use them for a year. That's why they spent Midway puttering up and down the West Coast ineffectually.

However, that point was also moot because of the second problem: battleships are resource hogs. They take a lot of food, ammo, and fuel to project forward, and through most of 1942 we simply did not have the support structure to project battleships far beyond our ports in the way the Pacific War needed. By the time we did and battleships started getting used again (late 1942), the carrier had already supplanted them.

I did exaggerate (and you probably know this in more detail than I do), but my impression is that the battleship fleet had been so badly reduced by Pearl Harbor that it never would've stood a chance against the Japanese battle line, which was probably a good thing in the end (gave the USN more time to gain confidence in carriers as a decisive arm, avoided any nasty IJN-induced battleship sinkings).

In the meantime, America could've built an even bigger juggernaut than it did in basically no time flat. You bite down on the fearful sigh building in your chest and just say it straight. “No, it's resolved, but- it was Hornet and Kaga.”

Goto's voice is suddenly all business again, tight and efficient. “They come to blows?”

“No, Kaga and Zuikaku did, but-” you rub your face. “They were mouthing off at Hornet and I- I stuck my foot in it,” you conclude miserably.
“They're at the torpedo range now, right?”

“Just were, at least. Hornet's with me; your girls are probably coming t-”

“I'll handle it,” he says crisply. “Find me when you can, we'll go over what happened.”

You swallow. “You don't want to see me now?”

A silence as Goto processes that. “No,” he says. “We've both got a job to do, and nobody's gonna do it for us. See me when you can, that's all.”

Then he hangs up.

You're slipping the smartphone away when Hornet comes up to you, eyes downcast and hands fidgety. You stand as she approaches, trading a salute with her before dropping into parade rest.

“Hornet-”
“Admiral-”

You both pause awkwardly.

Yes and no. The Japanese battleline was larger than the USN battleline before and after Pearl Harbor, but the US battleships had far FAR greater staying power. It was a difference in design philosophy; the Japanese ships had heavier guns and faster speed, the American ones had thicker armor and were much better at damage control.

Add in to that that the Japanese never deployed all of their ships in one location, not even at Midway or Leyte, and I think it's fair to say that the 4 battleships Nimitz had available to him on January 1st 1942 could have held their own against the Japanese if they had called on.

That's the thing about surprise attacks. They only work on the same guy once.

The British had planned on joining in on the attack on Japan, they sent the Prince of Wales and the Repulse who arrived barely a week before Pearl Harbor...

Only for them to end up sunk 3 days after Pearl Harbor by Japanese aircraft leaving the British without any capital ships in the Indian Ocean and Pacific for the rest of 41.

And then just when it looked like they'd get a proper fight the Indian Ocean Raid in early 42 added insult to injury, sending two cruisers, two destroyers, two dozen merchant ships and a mostly obsolete British carrier to the bottom.

After that the British didn't do much but keep guard.

In terms of Nagato showing up, I mis-typed by suggestion she will. The chance is there that she may or may not show up. In the case that I'm thinking about, I'm assuming all Kancolle girls will be an option in making an appearance. If they do or don't is entirely up to OP.

Also, some of the other girls who are already with us have some trauma already, (like Arizona and being sunk so early)

Still we can help them with their trauma (if thats possible).

If all else fails, ADDING NUKED GIRLS TO OUR COLLECTION OF SLUTS WILL MAKE THINGS SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING AND RADIOACTIVE

A real man owns up when he fucked up, even when he's in command. These shipgirls are not like tradtional, human sailors, so we cannot treat them as such.

We must be in equal parts, their commander, their comrade and their friend. That starts with approaching them as such.

FFS, nuclear weapons Do Not Work That Way. You get heavy fallout if you drop in in the dirt, lighter fallout if you airburst, but it's all short-halflife stuff. If you're device isn't using up it's fissile material and just shitting it about the landscape, you have a rubbish device.

That, and dilution in the fucking ocean will quite handily wash away any residual radionuclides..

That's because of how water is a really good radiation shield. You can swim by them no problem, but I would advise against trying to enter the wreck of the Arkansas or Saratoga.

Which sucks because I don't think anyone has taken pictures of Sara's hangar deck yet and I'm sure they had planes set up as test models inside, and I would like to see their condition.

see that's the thing thing though, verbal contrition rarely helps fuck ups except in special circumstances/with certain personalities. infact it can sometimes actually make relations worse by creating a disdainful frame.

it seems like every quest on the internet I see is filled with social retard pcs who go through plots cringing and simpering through everything that involves interacting with people in some way, and it always shoots them in the foot and ultimately impairs their agency.

like, even player characters that don't start out that way so often get pidgeonholed as such over time, and having such characters as a pov slog through footinmouth disease makes quests a chore to read.

We'll at least need a CL for secretary work. A DD is likely to muck things up, what with how young they are.

Unless we want to go into ships like Yura or Natori, I think we might be left with the Tatsuta class or Sendai classes. Jintsuu hates our guts, not sure about using an idol for paperwork and Sendai is all about the Yasen, Tenryuu is utterly unsuited for paperwork and that leaves us with Tatsuta...

...And oddly enough, shes surprisingly suited for it as long as we don't trigger her dangerous tendencies.

Hosing the ship down worked for the first test because it was an airburst, Baker though fucked the plan, all the radioactive sand in the lagoon got embedded in the ship's structure, the only thing that could get it off was sandblasting the ships down to the bare metal and while that was happening the 'clean' ships were slowly getting irradiated because people were tramping into them wearing partly radioactive clothes.

Not to mention they were scrubbing the radioactive sand into the water, which they would then try to hose the ship back down with the now radioactive water.
>>
Is it weird that Kancolle has made me feel really sad and melancholy for the wrecks of all those ships at the bottom of the ocean, slowly crumbling to nothingness?

No they didn't. They found a piece of her that probably got blown clear when she exploded. They haven't found any of the Japanese carrier wrecks yet.
>>
>>39117521
Still fine. What, are you expecting glowing green gremlins to be hiding inside waiting to pounce? Radioactivity doesn't work like that. For one thing, the only parts of the ship irradiated would be the OUTSIDE facing the device. Plus the act of sinking would helpfully wash away and particulate matter (fallout dust).

No, not by a longshot. They don't know where Kaga actually slipped from the surface or how far she moved after that piece was blown clear. And then you have the massively expanding cone of where the wreck could be starting from the point of sinking.

Ships and debris don't go straight down. The search area is hundreds of square miles wide, and they don't even know where that area is.

Bracing with a deep breath, you launch right into it. “First, thank you for coming to my aid.”

Hornet nods slightly, her dark eyes solemn and serious; hands twisting nervously on her bow.

“And second – I apologize for making that necessary. I... I screwed up, Hornet.”

She blinks, her hands freezing on the leather-wrapped grip of her weapon.

“I overheard everything,” you confess, “and when Zuikaku pitched in too-” you bite the inside of your cheek to resist the overpowering urge to evade contact with those dark, thoughtful eyes - “I lost my temper. I fucked up.”

Hornet's mouth tightens and curls, like she's trying to contain an outburst. She lowers her gaze to the fine-grained sand, tilting her face down to hide her eyes – but she can't hide the tears trickling down her dusky cheeks.

“... Hornet?”

“They were right,” she says softly. “I... have no pride. Please don't risk yourself for my sake.” She lifts her face to you again, her expression open and terribly vulnerable. “We built a lot of carriers, you know?” she says, her voice quavering on the edge of cracking. “I read about it, in the library. I'm... I'm expendable. I'm a *ship.* My crew... you... there's only one of you. Of each of you.”

She shifts her bow to one hand, laying it flat against her arm as she comes to proper attention – but she can no longer meet your gaze, her tears streaming from beneath closed eyes.

Over her shoulder you see Sammy racing down the beach with five leashed corgis bounding and tumbling through the surf ahead of her; their combined noise already reaching catastrophic levels from fifty yards distant. Hate his hiking behind her, awful sounds of bile and wrath drifting up the shoreline as he attempts to wrangle the remaining thirty-five PT vessels in a vaguely base-like direction.

“Hornet, you are dismissed,” you say, your voice sounding hollow and gutted even to yourself. “Whatever's on your schedule for the rest of the day, cancel it.”

She nods, and salutes, and she's already out of earshot when you realize you probably made a mistake; leaving her alone with her thoughts when she's carrying that kind of mindset around. But you can't have her bumping into any more IJN ships, and... and you just didn't know what to say right then. You don't know what you're doing.

Nobody possibly could, in this situation.

“I GOT'EM!” Sammy says, showering you with sand as she skids to a halt and her newfound entourage begins dancing in circles around you. “Corporal Hate came and got me 'fore he came here cuz he said you wanted something,” she says. “Are we gonna do something?”

You look down at her piercing, demanding glare, still trying to get your thoughts together.

“Admiral,” she says dangerously, “if you don't gimme some real work to do, real soon, I'm gonna get *bored.*”

A vast, all-encompassing terror slips over your mind; blotting out the light of thought, reason and sanity. Sammy was named after a Marine; and in your heart of hearts, you fear she's more Marine than Navy. And with her characteristic lack of tact or compassion, she just uttered the horrific, terrifying word that you and Hate spent so much effort to talk around without directly invoking while eating lunch, earlier.

The dreaded B word.

BORED.

“Yeah, we're, lets, uh, yeah,” you say, your much-abused psyche flailing a thumb in the general direction of base. Sammy scalds you with a wicked, victorious grin – and then she's off, running down the path ahead of you as she yodels about TORPEDO ATTACK, her newfound pack howling like wild wolves a-hunting as they sweep the lane before her.

You manage to corral Sammy and her flotilla long enough to get them across base without incident, heading for the dorms to pick up Willie. When you reach the yard, you see Goto wasn't lying – the small basketball court is littered with abandoned drinks and even a small radio, and there's a metal folding chair with a head-sized dent in it, even.

“So what are we doing?” Sammy demands, her arms crossed. She's already getting bored. You need to move fast.

“Introducing you to your newest flotilla member,” you reply as you hold a side door open for the corgis to charge in, their excited yips and yaps echoing down the halls. “A Fletcher-class.” I'm putting you in charge of making er, uh, 'git gud', so to speak.”

Sammy's eyes light up as she fairly skips along by your side. “Johnston? Did she come back!?”

“Er, no.”

“Hoel!?”

“Nnnno.”

“Heerman!?”

“Eh. Heh. No. Nobody you'd know from Samar, know.”

“Well, shit,” she says grumpily. “Well at least you're not pairing me with one of those nips.”

“Could you keep that down?” you say, glancing around. “Everyone's staying in the same dorms, you know.”

“WHAT!?” Sammy roars. “Y'MEAN I GOTTA TAKE MY SANDALS OFF AND BOW TO MECCA AND WRAP ROPES AROUND MY FEET AND SHIT BEFORE I CAN COME IN OR SOMETHING!?”

“No no no-”

Sammy's little frame seems to expand with righteous rage, her grey eyes flashing with outrage. “WHO'S BASE IS THIS, ANYWAYS?”

“GoddammitSammy THIS WAY,” you instruct, leaping ahead of her and throwing open the door to Willie's room without knocking. The cheap hollow-core door bangs and shudders with awful loudly as it whacks into the wall. You hear a shriek of terror and see a blur dive under the bed as a book goes spinning through the air. Sammy thunders into the room a second later.

“BEHOLD,” she says, slamming her fist into her palm. “I AM FLOTILLA LEADER SAMMY B. GOOD, AND I CAN RING YER BELL JUST LIKE PLAYING A GUITAR SO DON'T FUCK WITH ME Y'HEAR!?”

From beneath the bed comes a terrified whimper.

“It's okay,” you say placatingly. “You can come out. I've brought you a new friend.”

There's a scuffling sound; then Willie's mussed hair emerges from beneath the bed. “F-f-frieEEEAAAAAH!” she squeals as Sammy hauls her out bodily. The girl is dressed in pajamas, completely unprepared for visitors, but Sammy just holds her hand up in the air. “YEAH! SMALL BOYS REPRESENT!”

“S-s-mall boys?” Willie stutters, uncomprehendingly.
You hold your palm up in the air to demonstrate, and Willie uncertainly mimics the motion.

“YEA!” Sammy says, slamming a thunderous high-five with the unprepared girl. It sends Willie spinning around twice before she falls on her little ass, wringing her red palm in shock.

Yeah.

This is totally gonna work.

>>

If torpedoes are the strongest thing she has, then we can raise her morale by watching her score a hit.

Although i get the feeling she mught feel hurt if she can only land one torpedo whilst Sammy and the Corgi's land all of theirs.

but either way, if she scores a hit, then she can at least show herself that she's not completely hopeless as she claims herself to be.

The original game is called Kantai Collection, Kantai meaning "Fleet". The shipgirls are referred to as "Fleet Girls", and the game revolves largely around trying to collect all of them.

There's also some fighting sea monster ghost ships, but mostly its about creating a harem of battleships.

Say that to their 'chariot' human torpedo units, I fucking dare you. The WW2 Eyeties get a bad rap because most of their leadership was shit and a lot of their kit wasn't much better... but a surprising number of their front-line guys made up for it by having balls the size of depth-charges.

Seeing as how I'm still actually here, yes I know.

Many of the Italians front line, mostly top grade troops were equal to or better than most anyone you could name.

I believe there was even a Rommel quote about one or two divisions from their army he'd have over nearly any German unit.

But for every one or two good units they had double or more ones who couldn't seem to lace their boots correctly.

The Fleet Air Arm was of the opinion that a fighter needed a dedicated navigator to operate from a carrier 'safely'.
Operating the Martlet/Wildcat and similar American fighters gave them a different perspective, but by the time those lessons percolated through their design bureaux and produced kick-ass single-seat carrier-fighters like the Seafire, jets were starting to become a thing.
