You've found your mom. Then she knocked you out along with your brother by accident. She seemed really embarrassed about that. After hearing the short version of your story she loaded you and your brother up and set a course for home. You learned something very important through this. You are a tiny lizard and you don't cover ground very fast. Mom is the exact opposite. At the rate you're going you'll probably be home not to long after dark.

While you make sure your brother doesn't fall off the mom express you kill time by basking and telling her about your adventure. Your brother wakes up about halfway through, and after you keep him from falling off mom in a panic he joins in the retelling. You even get to hear about the bits you were unconscious for. And about how sleeping in a tiny hole in the ground with you is almost unbearably hot. You think mom enjoyed the story because every time you get to one of the exciting bits where something tried to eat you she goes a little faster. Clearly you're improving her morale by leaps and bounds.

After a couple hours of going over your journey and filling in details with your brother you move on to telling her about the rest of your life. That takes a bit longer but you're not terribly old yet. If your life was a book it'd probably only be a few pages long. You rather hope it ends up many times that before you finish.

Mom kicks up a lot of water. That's probably why it took you so long to notice the sheer number of critters that crawl onto land when they notice her coming. If there's half as much stuff living in the water as is climbing out of it to avoid mom's wake you're probably a lot more lucky than you believed. The frog from the other day even shows up and you make a rude gesture at it as you ride by.

After a while of riding mom you feel your nerves finally start to wear thin. Looking back you may have rambled a bit more than you should. You have no idea how mom is recieving you in general but seeing as she hasn't eaten you there's a good chance she likes you. Either way you're exhausted. You curl up and let your brother worry about you falling off for a while. Turnabout is fair play.

You dream that you're at the beach getting tumbled over and over by waves. Out in the water you hear mom's roars echoing in your ears, accompanied by the roar of a greater beast. Pulling yourself further onto the bitch you look out over the water to see mom fighting god lizard. It's not much of a fight. The great God Lizard is more than five times mom's size. She climbs over him and sprays stinking water in his eyes, but accomplishes nothing. Finally god lizard tires of her attempts and plucks her off of him and throws her hundreds of meters onto the beach. You have to move hastily to get out of the way of her fall and when you look back you find god lizard looking down on you. His eyes burn with holy light and his scales begin to glow before the holy flame erupts into the sky as he roars. The magical tingle of it can be felt from here. Then he looks down and gives you an approving nod before wading into the sea, the world grows darker as he returns to rest. As he goes you begin to glow.

Light in your eyes wakes you up. Your light. In your eyes. What you did earlier apparently mucked with your glowing and you're filled to your eyelids with horrid light. You're quite blind. A quick sniff and feeling around tells you that you're no longer riding mom, in fact you think you may be home already. You can't wait to see home again. Literally.

>Alright, let's try turning off the headlights

You close your eyes, which accomplishes very little, but seems like the right thing to do to get your head in the game. Recalling what you did earlier this morning you try to do the opposite. It takes a couple of tries but eventually the light in your eyes flickers and dims, only the ambient light through your eyelids remaining. As your eyes darken you feel a slight pressure that redirects somewhere else.

Eyes open you find you're lying in the center of a ring of snoozing siblings. They're at a uniform distance away from you that says that the heat coming off you is just the right temperature that far away. A couple days ago they'd have piled onto you. Just how hot can you be?

Judging by the light coming in the window, it's just a short while after sunset. You hear some quiet murmuring in the next room. It sounds like mom's whispers.

Stepping over your siblings you make your way carefully to the wall of hanging beads that serves as a door to the main room of the house. The nestroom is large, but not so large mom could sit in it and have a quiet conversation. You're careful to be at your sneakiest as you move, keeping your claws from tacking on the ground and keeping your tail from swishing behind you. As you approach the beaded barrier you hear the sound of the house groaning and you're momentarily concerned mom heard you and you freeze. After a moment the wood groans again and you feel safe moving. Mom is hard to hear with her constant whispers but you make out dad's part of the conversation easily enough.

"Please let me down," he says.

Mom whispers something back and you catch, "-question. Why-" "-long hunt alone?"

"I didn't haves anything to do with that," you hear your dad whine, "That was all Sarissa's doing."

"Why-" "-you in charge." "told her" "you a measure of responsibility."

"I can't not tell them, it's in the rules. I'd get in trouble if I didn't tell them. I told Sarissa I'd try and speak for her!"

"She's our daughter. Any decisions about-" "-I got back. Instead-" "-two babies in the swamp near the OBT-" "-one missing." Mom's voice is rising to what you think are the limits of her whispering ability. You get the feeling the bits you can hear are probably the bits she'd usually be yelling.

You creep up to the doorway and use a claw to move the first line of beads ever so slightly to peek into the room. Silent prayers that you might dim a little go unanswered and you notice a tiny shaft of light lance into the room as you shift the bead string out of the way.

Your mother notices too, and you see one of her eyes dance over to the light and follow it back to where you're looking in. Your dad is somewhat distracted by being glued to the wall by some black gunk and by the mouthful of very large teeth next to his head. You're not certain if they're there to make it easier to hear or if mom's just angry enough to wantt o scare him. It might be both. You'd be pretty scared either way.

Mom's tail snakes out across the room and into the room with you before scraping you into the room with your parents. You mother looks down at you expectantly.

You wave politely.

"Hey." Mom still appears to be waiting for something so you look at dad. "Did a monster come and take someone? Is that why he's stuck to the wall?" You glance over your shoulder and can barely make out for huddled shapes in the next room, okay so yeah, missing sibling. Crap.

"Uh, something like that. Kasha was just about to let me down, yes?" Dad tries for some semblance of respectability as he, but his courage slowly peters out as reaches the end.

Mom shoots him a look and he shuts up completely and she turns back to you. "Well, no one was taken but my sister has spiriteds off somewhere," Mom says whispering, "But that's not unusual when she knows I might be angry. More concerning is one of your brothers the..." She looks at Dad for an answer and he shrugs, as much as he can while pasted to a wall.

"Middle brother," a voice calls from the other side of mom's bulk. You see Kuru lean over to look around her and bob her head at you politely. "I'm glad you two are back safe," she says. You wave back with another "hey."

"Yes, your middle brother apparently snuck off after your auntie sent you off into the swamp all by yourselves, yes?" she glares at Dad. He wasn't really good at watching you guys, come to think of it. He only ever watched you after you'd fallen asleep. You also remember he owes you and your siblings half a rabbit.

"I tried to find him," Dad protests, "But I had to go to meet the other-"

Mom hisses at him and he shuts up. She's apparently already heard what excuses he has.

I'm sure they're really imporant and he didn't want to make them angry." You think you see Kuru flinch and dad look away from you out of the corner of your eye but you aren't done yet. You strike a valiant pose and continue, "I can go find him. I've found him a lot of times. He's always going to do things without thinking. That's why I didn't let him come with me. Older brother is much smarter." You pause, reminded of something important. "Can I have a name now?

Mom looks embarassed again and she rubs her face again. "Names will wait for tomorrow. I will give them to you all at once, no?" she says. "And there will no be chasing your brother for you and your siblings. Leave that to those big enough to carrys him back without getting eaten."

Mildly disappointed you let mom scoot you back toward the nestroom. "Go back to sleep. We'll find something for you to do tomorrow."

"Can I come with you to help look?" you ask desperately, "I saved him once before already, and I glow. He'd recognize my glow."

Mom shakes her head gently. "No one is going looking for him tonight," she says, "Even if his trail is not gone after so many days, if he is somewhere we can find him at this time of night he will not last long enough for us to reach him."

"Oh." You didn't realize he'd actually been gone that long. You thought wandering out with your glow would help. "Why do I glow?"

Mom shrugs and looks at Dad who tries to shrug and they both simulutaneously say, "Magic."

"We will have to find a way to solve that soon," Mom ponders aloud, "It may be dangerous if you've really been getting hotter like your brother said." She shakes her head again, "For now you should get back to sleep. Kuru?"

Kuru stands from her spot and picks you up. You really don't feel that's necessary but eh, lazy. You're halfway back into the room when a thought occurs.

"Hey," you blurt out, and Kuru stops your parents looking at you again, "Did I do good?" you ask.

Your mom tilts her head but nods. "Yes, you did very well. Now go to sleep."

You yawn and let yourself be dumped back in the center of the square of siblings.

You toss and turn for a bit but are unable to fall asleep. The events of the past couple days, and a day spent sleeping, stacked with worries about your missing brother all fight against any chance of sleep. But beyond all that one thing keeps you awake.

"Forgive me God Lizard for I have sinned. It has been three days since my last bird murder," you mumble to yourself as you get up. Sneaking out could be tricky. Mom has a lot of eyes, and you are lighting this room up quite a bit. After a bit of work you come up with a solution in the form of a small candle left on a shelf along with your fire stone. You move around the room gathering the items for your deed.

"Go to sleep," you hear mom call. You were right to assume she was watching your light move around, also starting the candle wasn't quiet. You're out the window as quickly as you can go, the candle left in your place. The plan is foolproof. You leap from the window sill and feel something pinch your tail and hold you dangling in the air.

You've discovered something incredibly terrifying. Despite being as tall as the house Mom is sneakier than a green snake in a sugar cane field. She looks down at you and glowers just a bit. Her eyes don't glow but the light you cast over her certainly gives the illusion they do. Black pits with burning coals deep at the bottom. You squeal a little with terror as her mouth opens in an elfish smile.

"Going out for an evening walk?" she asks in a terrifying whisper.
