You are Alaric Sepheran, an Astartes of the Blood Angels chapter. You have served faithfully for many, many years, and are a respected veteran of the chapter and a member of Master Dante’s honor guard. In the last few weeks you have been suffering from dreams of a terrible nature, and as you finally reached out to seek aid, you have been chosen by the Chapter Master for an important mission: to act as the Blood Angel’s representative on the world of Eskaton, to act as their guard and adviser in time of war, in payment for a debt incurred a millenium ago.

Announcements:

Next thread will be Monday, April 13 due to work-issues.

We’ll be using the Heroquest 2 ruleset for any dice-rolling we have to do (uses a d20). The standard here seems to be the best of three rolls, with crits taking precedence. A two-page summary of the Heroquest 2 rules is attached to this post.

A wave of sound crashes over you as you step off the ramp of the Fire Raptor, your armored feet solid on the concrete of the walkway. Your armsmen stand rigid on either side of you and around you a huge throng of people cheer and shout with joy, held back by two lines of grim arbites in dark armor.

Ahead of you stand a small group of men and women, some uniformed, others in civilian garb, all ornate and ceremonial. As you make your way toward them, between the grim arbites and the celebrating crowd, one man steps forward to meet you. He has the youth of the rejuvenat tanks, but his eyes are youthful and warm despite the true age which must lie on him.

“Brother Alaric,” he says, speaking loudly over the noise of the crowd, “you are very welcome to Eskaton.” He smiles and nods slightly to the cheering crowd. “As I’m sure you can tell. I am Governor Bellamy of the House of Rilos.”

You smile and thank him quietly as he half-turns towards the small group gathered with him. “May I introduce Aliana, my wife, and my daughter Lucrecia.”

Aliana nods silently to you, her dress long and trim, sober black lace its only ornamentation. Beside her, Lucrecia offers you a low curtsey, displaying the deep cleavage afforded by the cut of her bodice. She meets your eyes, holding her curtsey for a long moment, a smirk toying at the corner of her mouth before she rises. Out of the corner of your eye, you notice an exasperated look move across the smooth features of the Sororitas standing with the other high officials of the planet.

You nod politely to both women, and catch the eye of the Sororitas, eyes noting the markings of a Canoness Preceptor on her robes. You keep yourself reserved, ignoring the daughter’s blatant taunt as a trio of military officers approach you.

“This is General Alistair Markham, the commander of our defense forces, and General Meryn Reynolds, the commander of our Imperial garrison.” You nod to both men, who greet you in subdued tones. “And Admiral Charles Price commands our system fleet. The Admiral of the subsector believes all worlds should be able to handle their own defense, and so we are adequately complemented.”

The admiral smiles slightly at the governor and then looks up at you. He is a tall man, but even so you outreach him by a foot. “I hope you find us more than adequate, Brother Sepheran.”

Beyond, several noblemen wait, along with representatives of all the instruments of Imperial government. The canoness watches Lucrecia quietly, her expression reserved once more.

“I’m sure I will, admiral,” you reply mildly, favoring him with a small smile before turning to the rest.

“Representatives of the four Great Houses,” the governor explains as four men approach you, introducing them by turn. You exchange a few quiet words with each , their clothing rich and ornate -- it is clear that nobility is a virtue on Eskaton.

“Magos Alexander, the chief of our Manufactories, and Canoness Preceptor Selena, who has charge of the Adepta Sororitas here on Eskaton.”

The Canoness bows low to you. “It is good to see you, Son of Sanguinius,” she says quietly, her eyes lingering on you. She reaches out and touches the golden rose blazoned on the vambrace of your armor, thorned vines encircling its circumference. “It is not often one sees the Order of the Rose with thorns on one not of the Sororitas.”

You smile at her. “I thank you, sister,” you reply gently, “it was my honor to serve with those of your order.”

She gives you a small smile and steps away, withdrawing her hand from your armor. You feel Lucrecia fuming silently a few steps away.

The few others pass quickly, the provost marshal of the Arbites, the cardinal of the Ecclesiarchy, and the Chief Adept of the Telepathicus. All greet you calmly as the governor introduces you to them, and soon enough the governor invites you to enter the palace.

You walk beside him, leaving the crowd behind you, feeling bulky and large in the enclosed space of the hallway as the others trail behind you both.

“I see that you brought armsmen with you,” the governor observes mildly, and you feel a few of the noblemen shift restlessly, their eyes lingering on your back. “The brother who was here before you was not accompanied by such. Has Master Dante revised his opinion of our world?”

“Not at all,” you reply mildly, “it is simply a demonstration of his commitment to honoring our debt to Eskaton.”

Though he smiles slightly and accepts your deflection with good grace, the nobles behind you are not so easy, and a mild flutter of conversation blooms.

“These are your rooms, as they were your predecessors’,” the governor says as you stop beside a high, ornate door suited for one of your stature. “I am sure that you would like to take your ease after your long journey, but we would like to invite you to dinner tonight here in the palace. Also reassure the honour guard that if any of them even think of touching the Governor's daughter they'll have to personally explain themselves to Chapter Master Dante, not to mention the Emperor Himself.

You nod and smile warmly. “Of course. I would like that very much.”

He nods and smiles slightly, a hint of wariness still in his eyes. “Then I will look forward to the meal, Brother Alaric.”

And with that he turns and departs, trailed by his court.

The suite you have been assigned is fit for a lord and designed with your physique in mind. The interior is elegant, rather than lavish, and the dark wood and metal accents somehow soothe your mind with a feeling of warmth and home: other Astartes have been here, for many long years, and their memory is a comfort.

The first room is a reception area, with chairs and tables for quiet discussion. Even a fireplace is here, something you have seen only rarely; you stare at it in wonder for several long moments.

To one side is an office of sorts, and at the far end a large bedroom with a soft bed and a balcony. Gauzy curtains open out onto a spectacular view of blue skies and green trees, and you lean against the railing for a time, taking in the view. The stately cypress trees sway softly in the gentle breeze, and you feel as if you are in a dream.

You hear the door open and turn to see your armsmen accompanied by Captain Short and his crew, their eyes wide as they try to restrain their amazement.

You smile a little at Sergeant Nye. “I feel distinctly out of place, sergeant,” you say with a wry smile.

“You aren’t the only one, my lord,” he replies, looking around. “We’ve had a look at our own quarters they’ve scrounged up for us…” he smiles. “Not too bad, I must say.”

You laugh softly and look from him to Captain Short. “We’ve been invited to dinner.”

Captain Short raises an eyebrow. “That will be an experience,” he observes dryly, and Sergeant Nye nods in agreement. [cont]

“I’ll have the servant fetch you this evening when he comes by here,” you say mildly. “But for now let’s get our things stowed and make sure we’re settled.”

We already know that we caught an eye of Lucrecia which is immodest, probably fiery little lady, not dangerous is kept on a short leash and on an arm's length. Cannoness seems like a fanatic she probably is, thinks highly of us OR she is obsessive and jealous thinking on how she acted towards Lucrecia.

Think about nobles who whispered behind our back. We have enchanced senses, should have heard whole conversation.
>>
You make your way quietly to the armory, guided by diffident servants and palace guards. There your chapter serfs have already begun stowing and securing your arms and equipment. With their help, you remove your armor and change into the clothes you wore at the monastery.

That done, you leave them to their work and make your way to the quarters of your armsmen, again guided by palace servants. Few people walk the halls, and most stare at you silently before they recover from their shock and hurry past.

Once at your armsmen’s quarters, you find that though they are not lavish as your own, they are certainly comfortable. The unexpectedness of their presence is evident in small details, but the bunks are clean and the quarters large enough for at least twice as many men.

“Is everything all right, my lord?” Sergeant Nye asks as he sees you enter, his armor and equipment already stowed in a locker at the far end of the room.

You nod and reassure him as you explain the reason behind your presence.

They will probably route it through various subnodes, if someone has wiretap in Governor's palace it's given that it's someone working with him or someone very influential who takes appropriate measures to not reveal himself.

No, it's better to check if it's present and then try to expose them through following weeks by social means, maybe even bait them through staged wiretap conversation.

You make your way out of the quarters quietly, and begin walking the halls.

The palace is enormous, the architecture clearly ancient but well-maintained. The guards and servants are all well-groomed and polite as you pass.

You leave the residential area of the palace and begin to hear the chatter of governance. Clerks and copyists stand in corners and in offices, speaking quietly with one another about the events of the day. Adepts and tech-priests pass you occasionally, as well as members of the PDF and even the odd naval officer or member of the Imperial Guard.

From snippets of conversation, you hear mention of a group called the White Sun, who are an underground group so far as you can tell; their goals and membership are much less clear.

“Not to anyone other than herself, maybe,” she observes.

“Then she won’t be the next governor, I assume,” you continue, eyes watching her expression as she shakes her head.

“Throne, no,” she observes with a look of dread, “no, the Great Houses will choose the next governor -- at least unless the White Sun get their way.”

You look at her questioningly and she waves a slender hand in apology. “Forgive me. The White Sun are a populist group here on Eskaton. They want a greater representation for the lower classes in determining the governorship. As it stands now, it’s chosen by representatives of the four houses.”

She sees the look in your eyes and smiles. “They’re harmless. Mostly they distribute pamphlets and make compelling speeches. “Would it be out of turn to ask if you agree with the governor’s policy?” You ask quietly.

She gives you an enigmatic smile as her eyes flash. She turns and threads her arm into yours, bringing you along as she starts to walk toward the dining room. “You’ll get me in trouble,” she murmurs, “we’re going to be late.”

You look down at her and smile slightly, her arm is slim against yours, but you can tell that she is well-muscled beneath her taut skin.

“But as it happens,” she says idly, “I do agree with him. There’s no hint of subversion, and there’s never been anything violent associated with them. I think it would be good for Eskaton, and I think the governor is wiser and more far-sighted than he is given credit for.”

You nod for a moment, looking ahead down the hall. “Were they active when you arrived?”

Selena looks up at you and nods. “They were, as a matter of fact. They’ve been working hard for a long time. Their leaders are dedicated, and, from what I can tell, they have no wish to cause harm to Eskaton.”

She pauses, and stops walking for a moment, gently bringing you to a halt with her.

“The Houses, though,” she murmurs, “are less tolerant. They see the beginning of what may be a serious crack in their power. And I believe that Governor Bellamy will not get re-elected at the next moot.” she sighs softly, her bright eyes suddenly weary. “With time comes change. The character of all of these things may change, with time.”

She looks up at you and smiles, casting aside her gloomy thoughts. “It is good to have someone to talk to. Few of my sisters have any interest in such matters.”

“I’m sorry, my lord,” he murmurs, looking up at you and shaking his head as he gives you a meaningful look, the soft hum of the conversation around you making your words hard to hear. “I couldn’t find anything. Perhaps with more men or some better tools.”

You nod to him. “We’ll try again another time, sergeant,” you say mildly, “I’m sure Captain Short appreciated your assistance.”

Sergeant Nye smiles slightly and looks up as the server announces dinner, and the court moves to their seats around the table.

Governor Bellamy sits at the head with you at his right hand and his daughter across from you at his left. His wife Aliana sits opposite him at the other end of the table. The other guests fill in around you. Sergeant Nye and Captain Short sit at your side, and you see that Selena sits at Aliana’s left at the other end of the table.

Liking the quest so far, but I have a minor critique of your writing style. You tend to use adverbs a lot, especially during dialogue where "mildly" has been used like 5 times. The I think the content of what's spoken already conveys the tone, and a sparser use of adverbs would make them individually more effective. I think you're trying to show the main character is all polite and such, but I think it's already pretty clear he's not the boisterous Space Wolf type.

You look at the governor as the meal begins to be served and drinks are poured.

“I’m afraid I didn’t have much time before I had to depart for Eskaton,” you tell him, glancing up as a servant settles a plate in front of you. You notice that it and your utensils are sized for an Astartes.

“And you wish to know more about our world?” he asks, nodding as he takes a drink of his wine. “We’re not particularly special,” he continues, glancing at you, “or even notable, expect for our fortunate connection with your chapter. We’re mainly what you would call a ‘Pleasure World’, although I’ve always found that to be rather a course designator, but I suppose one cannot argue with the Administratum.”

You feel a bare foot rub against your leg.

“In any case, we produce only enough material to keep ourselves supplied, and primarily export minor entertainment items or various things that our world -- relatively pristine as it is -- can produce, such as various items of botany for example.”

Lucrecia’s face twists a little as you move your leg away.

“People come to our world to escape the world they live on. I am afraid we are not well-regarded by the other worlds in our sub-sector for just that reason.”

“Is that really true?” you ask him, “Is not a reprieve from the daily struggle something to be cherished?”

He nods in response, silent for a moment.

“Perhaps I am simply paranoid. Many of their best and brightest come here -- and many stay for the duration. They accuse us of stealing their talent, but in truth they have none to blame but themselves. You have seen such worlds I am sure: filled to teeming with roiling masses of humanity, filthy, the very air poisonous.”

He shudders slightly and begins to eat his meal.

“No, Brother Alaric. I do not blame them for their envy.”

“Is that what the subsector capital is like?”

“Yes. Milian.” He shakes his head. “That and Argos are the two most important worlds in the subsector: the capital and our forge world. We even have a titan maniple of our own permanently deployed here to Eskaton.”

“I assume that it is a hive world.”

“Of course,” he replies, “that’s where the main fleet is anchored as well as the subsector reserve of Imperial Guard. General Reynolds and Markham will do their best, but if we need more help, they’re only a few weeks away.”

“And Argos?”

The governor takes a drink of his wine and points gently to your meal. “Are you not hungry, Brother Alaric? Argos is a fairly new forge world, and so I’m afraid we don’t have access to the more advanced weapons. But what they do make is plentiful and good quality; we’ve had no cause for complaints.”

“That is reassuring,” you reply, taking your cue and beginning to eat. “Are there any major threats in the area?”

“Not permanently in the subsector, but we get the occasional Ork raid. They’ve never made it onto the ground here on Eskaton, and we’re fortunate enough to be sheltered somewhat from the edge.”

The room falls into a silence for a while, filled with occasional snippets of conversation and the movement of servants as courses come and go.

“I would like to apologize about that spectacle this morning,” the governor says, “I know the Astartes are not accustomed to such pomp. But it is important for the people: they are immensely proud of their association with the Blood Angels.”

Aliana speaks up from the end of the table and gives Bellamy a loving, if admonishing look. “We are *all* glad to have you here, Brother Alaric, not just the people.”

The governor flushes softly in embarrassment. “Please excuse my phrasing. I hope I did not cause offense.”

“I understand,” you reply and give him a smile, “morale: is it not so?”

He inclines his head gratefully at your gracious response. “It is so.”

“Here here,” General Markham says as he stands raising his glass in your direction. “We are all glad to welcome you to our world, Brother Alaric. Emperor’s blessings on us all.”

Lucrecia snorts softly. “At least now there will be someone on this world who has seen combat.”

General Markham flushes but says nothing.

You take a drink of wine, ignoring Lucrecia’s comment as General Markham resumes his seat and stares quietly at his food, his appetite gone.

One of the noblemen clears his throat and looks at you. “And what is your rank, Brother Alaric?”

You look over at him. “I was a Veteran Sergeant in the first company until I was removed from that position.”

He gestures with his wine glass. “And you were removed because…?”

“Because I was chosen to be a member of the honor guard.”

“Ah. You mean… like those men you brought with you. Is that right?”

You nod. “In a way, yes.”

“So am I correct in understanding that you currently… have no rank?”

“That is correct.”

The man nods and drains his glass. “Well. I’m sure we’ll all sleep safer knowing that.”

“General--” you protest as you begin to rise, but the governor puts his hand on your arm and shakes his head.

“Lord Stefan,” Aliana says as she stands, her lean frame tall and proud, “never before have you shown your cowardice more clearly: you insult a guest under my husband’s roof, who is not only an Astartes, but one of the patrons of our world. Pick up the general’s glove or I swear to you that you I will see to it that you rue the day your mother pushed your squalling little form out of her.”

The nobleman rises stiffly and takes the glove from the table. “I accept your challenge,” he says formally, his face white as he meets the general’s eyes.

The governor stands and looks at you. “Please forgive us, my lord,” he murmurs to you, “this is a poor sort of welcome.”

You stand and nod to him as the dinner breaks apart, people quickly taking their leave.
