Groaning, you slip into the blessed grip of the guild's baths, praising every god and mortal alike that people demanded it built.
Your body is a temple to an all too familiar pain- The kind your mother inflicts with training ad sparring.

You had it coming, really. You can admit that.
You dodged her for a while, and then it all caught up at once with the wolves and fighting and leaving.
At least she waited for all your bits to fix themselves.

And you even managed to give her a good run. Though she's smart enough not to try and match you with flat strength, and good enough to keep you from really using it against her.

You dip yourself to your shoulders, letting the water reach your chin as you sigh.
The dull pain of exertion is fading, replaced with warmth and the freedom of letting your limbs float idly.
What would it take to build a hot tub? The heat isn't a problem at all, but managing currents and streams...

Maybe creating channels and tunnels through the tub, and having air stones or something to push it through? Like having the stone inset so the air was directed properly. Or maybe there's an enchantment that can make something vibrate- Seats to massage your back.
You'll have to ask Dad. Sara would probably create something that shudders as it stores magic. Until it explodes.

You're joined in the bath by your friends- Nin giving a little hop, with a beat of wings for extra distance, taking a seat on your skull- lo enough to relax, and high enough to not drown. Sheszka dog paddles after Jin, who is scooting around like a duck who has no idea how to swim.
So not a duck at all, really.
Esmerelda is even mostly awake for this- She's twisted herself up into your hair, using it like a chair, keeping her above water while letting her tail float lazily in the warmth.

Suggestion from last thread: Snake training

Use Jin to air drop Esmerelda on animals for hunting so that she levels up a bit. Yes I know snake is afraid of heights and I'm not suggesting we just drop her from 30 ft up in the air. It will be harder for Jin but she can swoop in and land Esmerelda on a target.

>>39178964
>Maybe now's a good time to visit the Moth village?
Yes, Nin should get a chance to visit the family before we set out.
>>
We need to weave seatbelts for our passenger compartments, having people flopping around unsecured is horribly unsafe. We don't want to be an unsafe APC, now do we?
>>
It doesn't take much in the way of effort to convince Nin to help with your hair- She's all to eager to play with it.

It's vaguely worrying, but, well...
Your options are a little limited in terms of friends potentially styling your air.

There's Sheszka, who could reliably pass for a bush on any given day. Jin doesn't really have fingers.
And you suspect Ezzy would wind up trapped in a braid, which sounds very entertaining, but then you'd have to get her out.

So you back up to a shallower section of the baths, letting the moth-girl press your hair with towels, drying it enough to work with. You snag the snake before she gets herself caught up in Nin's warpath, dipping her down into the water and gently massaging her back with your thumbs.
The way her tail lashes out into the water as she leans back over your fingers, sighing with happiness is well worth the price of admission.

"Do you think it's going to work?"
"The wolves?"
"Mhm."

You can feel her nodding behind you, pulling long strips of air into her work. It feels like she's trying for another thick braid.
You let yourself relax, closing your eyes and just enjoying the sensations.
Having someone gently comb out your hair feels... really nice. Warmth and happiness, the slow tingling of your scalp.
>>
>>39179145
"I think- it'll work out. One way or another. My mother said yes, yes? So all that's left is the town."
"I like how you think your mom is somehow more of an obstacle than a town of adventurers and harpies."
"You say that like she isn't."

You both giggle a little, your voices low as she draws another thick handful of hair into the braid. You can feel it sliding through her fingers, over and around the rest of it- How does that even work, anyway? You've never given it much thought. Mostly because you kept it short... before. And stylists and salons were always very professional. Cold, almost? Hair is dead, but you can feel through it.

Maybe you'll keep it this long for a while.
Nin leans away from you for a moment, pulling back in seconds, tying off your braid with a length of silk. It thumps heavily into your back as she claps.

"Done!"
You flick your bangs out of the way, smiling over your shoulder.
"Thank you, yes?"

It doesn't take much for her to blush.

Drying off is fast, once you manage to drag yourself from the bath.
You even manage to surround Sheszka with towels before she tries to shake herself off, keeping you from having to towel down a second time.

You clean up your things, dressing again before heading upstairs, and out of town.
The bath was too much for the snake, it seems. She's been reduced to curling around your neck again, sleeptalking happily after the massage.

You're on the road quickly, the guards waving you through with a smiles all around.
You're very recognizable, even with seven spiders wandering the area.

You keep your pace at a jog in the woods-
No need to push yourself after Mom's triumphant return to training, but feeling the breeze on your face is definitely worthwhile.

The sun is high and bright, keeping the weather tepid despite the season- Trees are starting to change colours, yellows and oranges starting to creep into the brilliant green of your home. The smells are turning fainter, the air more crisp, like the world is follow your example and shedding.

It's a beautiful day.

You pass through the ruins- Your perennial training field now dotted with falling leaves. They crackle underfoot, sometimes sticking to your legs, building up as you spike more of them with each step.
Your friends certainly seem to find it amusing.

The arches are easy to find, easy to navigate, and you use them to direct yourself towards the hidden village, dropping your pace as you approach.
Nin is nervous- shifting uncomfortably on your back, flicking her wings every few minutes to try and run off her excess energy.

The guards in the trees are the same as you remember, if not the same people.
Maybe not quite the same.

You stop and wave beneath the trees, and are treated to a little less professionalism, and a little more blind gawking.
>>
>>39180082
"Hello, yes!"

There's hurried whispers above.
"What are you doing? Arachne are allies-"
"She's wearing a skull! And I think her legs are on fire?"
"That's not-"
"There's a wolf and a harpy too!"

"Oh. I think that's Nialla's daughter."
"Wha- What?"
"Is Nin there?"
"Nin? Sil's girl? She isn't even a yearling is she?"

The moth astride your shell sighs, her antennae twitching as she stands, perching at the edge of your shell for height.
"Hey! I am right here, thank you! When are you going to do your job!?"

"Oh. Uhm."
"Aaaarachne? Arachne! What brings you to the village?"
"I am bringing Nin to visit her parents, yes?"
"But she's all... gold. And white."
"I am magnificent, thank you very much!"

"Yeah, that's Nin."
"Uh, go on through? I guess?"

You skitter under the bowed branches of the guards, listening to them start to pass rumour back and forth as you make your way into the little town.

"I thought she was a child-"
"They're all kids-"
"That's gotta be a lie. Not even arachne-"
"Was that a snake?"
"Heard all her kids went and-"
"Gods-"

You can't help but take some pride in that.

A foot or less on each leg. You couldn't be bothered to kick them free, and they cant get any higher without tearing all the way and falling off.
>>
You reach directly behind you, over your shoulders, snagging the moth just under her armpits.

And then you haul her over your head, spinning her right side up as she makes little squeaks.

"Nin, you need to calm down a bit, yes?"
"Did you thing spinning me around was going to calm me?"
"No, I though if I tried to get you to calm down without already holding you, you;d make excuses and try to escape."
"...Maybe."
"Mhm."

Sheszka trots around to your front, leaning against one leaf decorated limb before speaking.
"What are you scared of?"
"Nothing. I'm not scared."
The wolf cocks her head to the side, and you smirk, interrupting.

"Then what is bothering you?"
"I'm-"
"You're shivering."
"And you smell afraid," Sheszka chimes in.
"Yes. You smell- You can smell emotions?"
"Yes?"

Huh. That's really kind of neat, to be honest. Maybe it's just the increased sweat or something? Or maybe she can actually-

"I just kind of- I don't know. It was hard. Leaving. I don't want to see my mom sad Lyra."
You poke her wings and she folds them, letting you pull her into a hug.
"Nin, I don't think your mother will be upset to see you grown and happy."
"But what if she wants me to stay?"

"She isn't going to force you into things you don't want, yes? She said so."

"Come one, yes? Let's go see them."

She nods quietly, letting you carry her as she points the paths forward.

There's moths in the trees, peeking down at you as they work, waving occasionally before turning back to whatever they're doing. It looks like they're adding to the cocoon houses, layering them with leaves and silk and wood.

You didn't think winter was that bad, at least from the way everyone else spoke of it. But, then again, the moths are fairly fragile?
You entertain yourself with an image of Nin wearing an oversized puffy jacket, smiling lightly as you walk through the village.

Nin's home rises before you- the swaddled shape of the house further in the tree. Young moths are in the branches- Shouting and dropping from above as you skitter to the roots, excitedly yelling, trying to get your attention, or Nin's, all at once.

"Hey! Its spiderbutt!" "Queen Spiderbutt!"
"Your butt's a skull." "Yeah, its a skullbutt!" "Stop talking about her butt! It's rude!"
"You're rude!" "Hey! It's Nin!" "Nin, Nin!"

They're in the middle of what can only be described as a cacophony when they all go absolutely silent, staring intently at the moth in your arms.
"Your wings are gold!" "Just pieces of them." "Antennae too!"
"Did you grow?"
"Yes, I did."
"But none of us did!" "You must've cheated!" "Cheater!"
"You are all idiots! My majestic form is all in service of the queen!"

"Mom said she's not really a queen."

"I- No."
"You should have a crown." "And a castle!" "The really big chairs!"
"They're right, my lady? When will you be gilding yourself with things worthy of your station?"
"Oh! Did you know? Nin grew twice! Two times, yes!"

The crowd immediately turns on the ring leader, her sibling tugging at her arms and yelling about how unfair it was, and how she was 'stealing all the growing up they were doing.'

The fact that Nin is somehow the most reliable and mature of her siblings is a nightmare you are not interested in facing, however.
So you interrupt their attempted criminal trial with the one question every child dreads.

"Are your parents home?"

The clamour dwindles down as they look to each other, each trying to force someone else to take responsibility.
Rie rises to the occasion, cementing her place as second-most-mature-but-still-totally-a-child.

"They're building."
"Is that you're all outside?"
"We're outside cause we wanna be!" "We're outside cause Set made a mess."
Two of them immediately devolve into some sort of absurdist version of wrestling, a little ball of fluff and wings rolling in the dirt.

Luckily for you- and not for the moths, you suppose, their mother is also in possession of a sixth sense regarding her children, floating down from their home and landing neatly, separating the boys and ordering them to stand with their backs against the tree.

"I did not send you outside to fight more, you little-"
And then she turns.
"Nin!"
>>
>>39182888
The moth half curls herself reflexively around your hands, wings starting to flutter against you.
"Mama. You can recognize me?"
"A bit of gold won't stop you being my daughter. Come here."

You let your friend down, and she wraps herself in her mother's embrace, burrowing her face into the older moth's furry scarf.
"Look at you, growing up so fast. Now if only your siblings had half the sense to follow that."
She lets out half a giggle, choking back a little cry as she hugs her harder.

"Did you go and see beyond the forest, little one?"
"No. Not yet."
She sniffles loudly as she continues.
"Lots of the forest. Snakes and wendigo too."

Her mother pats her head gently, stroking her hair back while you stand idly by, fidgeting.
"Didn't even leave the forest and already back, hmm? We missed you too, you know. And is your friend taking good care of you?"
"Always mama."
"Well, then I'll expect good stories when you come home, won't I? Do you have any today?"

That brings the little moths right around, sending them straight from awkwardly watching to demanding stories and shouting.

NIN, HERO OF THE FOREST KINGDOM!

Shoulder moth it is!
Writing!
>>
You haul the moth to your shoulders as he steps back from her mother, wiping her eyes with the back of a hand.
She lets out a little sound of surprise, and you laugh as she grabs your braid to stay upright.

"Lyra!"
"What's wrong? You keep saying you are a herald, yes?"
She stares at you before she turns up her nose, flaring her wings wide, gold patterns catching sunlight, all her siblings assembling beneath you.

Even Sheszka has joined them, sitting at attention.

"As herald of the now and future queen-"
"Not a queen-"
"-I bring to you the stories of her heroism, her bravery and deeds."

"She stood strong on the beaches of the river, spear and armour and friend, facing a beast who blotted out stars, with as many heads as you can count snapping-"

She has an odd sort of rhythm to her story, her voice rising and falling as she speaks, wings used to punctuate exclamations, her hands waving and painting pictures with her words.

Other people join as she talks, speaking in turn of everything you've done, though there's no order to be found.
Your fight against the wolf with lightning- though she's clearly taken notes from Jin- the rush to save Rie from the ruins, finding, punching and adopting Sheszka- The wolf even wags her tail at the story, despite what it contains.
>>
>>39184019
And she keeps going, talking about the hydra, the trip upstream, meeting the wendigo and healing your friend.
And the snakes, your triumphant return home.

And then she speaks of the wolves flooding across the river, attacking the town, trying to take the harpies home.
And how you struck them down, standing tall over their alpha, strong and proud and unstoppable.

She even leaves out the part where you pass out after.

She steals your shield as she finishes, gulping down water as the sun falls low over the little village.
And then comes the applause.

From the trees, from all around you, from the children, from your friends.
