Law had practically forced the notion upon your bro, because genuine PTSD was no laughing matter and urgently needed to be desperately attended to, especially when it involved the party leader. Your bro had immediately agreed. Your bro had been smashed back into reality back then, and understood he needed the help. Laura and Courier Six, both being soldiers of various nationalities and backgrounds, would have knowledge needed to ease your bro through his guilt.

It’s too bad, you think, staring at the ceiling. The last time you and your bro went to a theme park had been back when you were eleven. It had been fun, and Hatoko and Ayase had both been with you. The trip was a memory from simpler times, when things were less hectic and your party assassin had been less of a psycho.

Souji probably wouldn’t want to use up one of the tickets. You remember what he said. His family was already swimming in pools of money; there was no need for him to be petty and get a free pass for something he could easily pay. So he was out, along with his wife. Guy was definitely busy today, up to his eyeballs in assignments for his business degree.

You decide to call Syoko first, the party’s shy and resident mushroom girl. It’s not like there was any personal preference behind your decision. You just happened to catch her name on the list first. Not that there wasn’t anything wrong with that—Syoko, despite her shy, eccentric and introverted nature, was usually a nice person to hang around. She always tried her best in battles, and made an effort to help her fellow members out. You tap in her number, and wait for her to pick up.

Besides, you don’t recall her every being to an amusement park before, or any of the tourist attractions in Megiddo City. She was a homeschooled kid, correct? She didn’t really get much chance to head outside and enjoy the pleasures of the world. At least, that’s what you had heard from her. Her Madness Enhancement persona, which was completely different to her usual self, begged to differ.

She had spent the last month and a half following the final battle shut in Sachiko’s estate, browsing the Internet and cultivating her nigh endless supply of mushrooms. She needed to get outside and breathe in the fresh air.

“Hello?” her soft voice whispers.

“Hi Syoko.” You say cheerfully. “What’s up?”

“Oh, Kazuya, it’s you. Good morning…” Syoko replies, giving an uneasy giggle. “I was just watching something on Yuutube. Is…is there something you wanted?”

“Yeah!” You say. “I just got hold of four tickets to the local amusement park. You wanna come with me?”

Syoko pauses. “A-Amusement park?” She repeats, sounding a little nervous. “T-that’s a place with lots of people, isn’t it?”

“Um, sorta?” You say. On Saturdays, the place was generally filled to the brim with children and their parents. “Is that a problem?”

“…I think it…might be too early for me to t-talk to other people...” Syoko mutters.

“Oh, okay then.” You say. Does that mean she doesn’t want to come? Well, you supposed you should’ve anticipated this, what with her being a shut-in and all. You guess you should give this another try. “Hey Syoko, you don’t have to be worried about that. Me and two others will be coming with you. We’ll be with you the entire time.”

“Um…er…” Syoko appears to be mulling over the issue a bit.

“It’ll be great. Trust me, Syoko.”

“K-Kazuya, I don’t…”

You frown. “Well, if you really don’t want to come, I can’t force you. It’s too bad, we could’ve had a lot of fun with the others.” You say, feeling slightly disappointed. You had been sorta looking forward to this. “Don’t feel down on anything. Uh, I guess I’ll—”

“Wait!” Syoko shouts.

You wince and push the phone away from you. “Syoko?”

“I-I’ll come with you!” Syoko blurts out.

“You sure?” You ask.

“Y-yes. If…if I can come with you, Kazuya, and some of my other friends, then I don’t mind the crowd…” You can imagine her smiling nervously. “Besides, I’m one of the thirteen heroes, r-right? T-this should be nothing.”

You grin. “Sweet! Alright, can you come down to the train station at eight thirty? I’ll be waiting there with the others.” You hang up. Good, you’ve successfully convinced Syoko to go. This makes you pretty damn happy. You finger the last two tickets in your hands. Who else will you invite to come?

You call Hatoko at first. Obviously, duh. If bro can’t come, then you’ll invite your second best friend along for the ride. You await with eager anticipation. The last time you went to the amusement park had been fun. You and Hatoko had sat together on the most infamous rollercoaster on the park, and promptly and metaphorically shat yourselves when the car slammed down the first drop. The two of you had exited the ride with dizzy eyes and wobbly stomachs, vowing never to do such a stupid thing ever again. Now, though? You were a hero who tamed a mad beast, wielded a massive broadsword and took down numerous of Azazel’s forces.

That rollercoaster would rue this day, oh yes it would.

Unfortunately, you are disappointed when you pick up the phone.

“Sorry Kazuya, I’m really busy today!” Hatoko says. You can hear her scrambling around her room, setting up equipment of some sort.

“Oh, okay then. That's a shame.” You say, “Hey, what’s going on?”

“I’m making a video for my Yuutube channel.” Hatoko replies, and you hear a piece of machinery squeak. Is that a tripod? “I promised my subscribers I would have a video out by the end of the week, and I don’t want to let them down. So sorry, Kazuya!”

Oh yeah. Hatoko, being a top-tier elemental mage, possessed abundant amounts of magical knowledge. She conveyed this knowledge by making videos on the Internet, teaching others how to perform magic spells, discussing magical theory and whatnot. Since she was one of the thirteen heroes, she attracted a wide audience and made loads of cash from her views alone. It was almost enviable.

Well, Hatoko did say she wanted to be a teacher one day. This was her first step, apparently.

“Nah, it’s cool. Good luck with your video, Hatoko.” You say. “See you on Monday.”

You hang up and sigh. Okay, who else could you call?

“Sachiko, I have tickets to an amusement park. Syoko is with me. Want to come with us?” You end up talking to the fallen angel after some deliberation.

“Fufu, yes, I heard.” Sachiko smiles. “Syoko was just chatting with me. We’re having breakfast right now.”

“Soo…is that a yes?” You ask.

“It would be my pleasure.” Sachiko says. “Don’t worry about taking the train. I’ll have someone drive us there. Oh, but don’t you have four tickets? Well then, just call me and tell me who the other person is later.”

“Neat.” You sever the connection and head back to the contacts page.

This will the last call. Only one person is left. One out of four people to have fun today. This is a lot less melodramatic than the thoughts in your head are making it out to be.

You pause over STREUM’s name. Even after travelling with the man for quite some time, you did not have a clear understanding of his home world. The sky was constantly dark, apparently. There was a space travel between planets, and skyscrapers dotted the landscape like blades of grass in a meadow. There had been a war of some description, involving two factions of the same organization working to bring the other down. Guns, gunships and psychic guns had been involved. Also, everyone there was French, because brouzouf was the main currency of the world, and brouzouf was French slash was dosh.

You might be stretching that connection, you think. Did they have amusement parks back then? Something tells you the answer was no. STREUM always sounded like he didn’t have much fun in his home world. The first thing he had, after you and your party dragged him from the dimensional portal, was marvel had how blue and bright the sky was. The surrounding area had been covered in demon corpses at the time, but according to STREUM it was a 100% positive improvement.

You dial.

“STREUM.” You state.

“Greetings, brother Kazuya.” STREUM’s raspy, mechanical voice growls, like a yacht being dragged across a beach full of shingle. “What can I do for you?”

“I’ve got tickets to an amusement park. Syoko and Sachiko are coming with me. Want to come?”

STREUM pauses, for three whole seconds. “An amusement park.” He murmurs. “I have heard of such locations. Yet, I have never invaded one before. It is a place where children go to enjoy themselves, correct?”

“Yeah, that about sums it up. So you’ve never been to one before?” You ask. “First time for everything, then. Come with us!”

“It is fun. That seems to be general consensus I have scoured from the bowels of the Internet.” STREUM mutters. “Fun…the only losing move is not to play. I am curious. Very well then, I shall accompany you on this endeavour. May it be a success for the four of us...”

At least you managed to get him to come. So STREUM had never been to anywhere like an amusement park. Well then…this would prove to be interesting.

The rest of the morning proceeds as usual. You eat your breakfast, browse online for a bit and then wait for Sachiko to pick you up. She has opted to use her family’s least conspicuous car for today’s outing. So, of course the car is an expensive and fancy four-wheel drive with enough seats for all of you. Oh well, at least the vehicle’s length doesn’t exceed the height of an entire oak tree.

It doesn’t take long for you and your friends to make your way there. You step outside, and breathe in the fresh air. You and your friends have arrived at the local amusement park, disguised and ready to go. What will you do now?

You take a look at your friends. To avoid being mobbed by children, single mothers and just about every other person in the dark, you have all taken to dressing yourselves in unusual styles. You are wearing a baseball cap and have, after lots of consideration, removed your trademark shades. Suddenly the entire world seems so much more brighters. Syoko has her hoodie on and, in contrast to you, has slipped on a pair of rounded sunglasses. Sachiko has removed all clips from her hair, let it down and is wearing a white summer dress. She would be the hardest to disguise, considering that her face was all over the business world as the young upstart of the Koshimizu family.

As for STREUM…he has swapped out his bulky armor set for another bulky armor set. The difference is that the design appears to have been drawn from the East, not the West. The plating and the helmet remind you very much of a futuristic, gold and black samurai. Despite looking like a super soldier out of a cyberpunk nightmare, and still standing at his absurd height of 2.1 metres, no-one bats an eye at him. Nobody guesses that he is STREUM Deus Ex On, the notorious hacker and the man capable of detonating heads like balloons full of raspberry jam. Well, the designs of his two armor sets are radically different…

“S-so much people…” Syoko mumbles, instinctively drawing away from the crowd. She bumps into you, and squeaks in fright.

“Research will now begin.” STREUM drones. “Analysis of the location known as ‘Megiddolaon Amusement Park’ has started. Cost: 6000 Brouzouf at the minimum speed. Activating…”

“Let’s take a look around, shall we?” You say, before anything silly can happen. “I want to see what’s changed, and what’s still around.”

Quite a lot has changed, apparently. The ferris wheel has been renovated quite a bit and no longer looks like it’ll fall apart from a harsh wind. There’s a stage theatre and a bumper car section that hadn’t been there before. The water slide has expanded, and there’s a dungeon section next to it, complete with fake dragons and plastic weaponry. The massive rollercoaster is still there, along with the food venue and the merry-go-round. A tall, stone castle lies in the distance.

The place is very busy. It’s a Saturday, after all. Kids are swarming about, dragging their parents around. You and your friends are standing at the front gate, having recently given your free tickets to the staff.

Maybe you shouldn’t force the options on Syoko or STREUM. It’s their first time at Megiddoloan, after all. They’re most likely really curious about the entire park, STREUM especially. Sachiko needs a chance to voice her opinions as well. You turn to your small group of friends and grin.

“So…where do you guys want to go?” You say, in a friendly and casual manner. “I’m fine with whatever.”

“The stage theatre.” Sachiko says, after thinking for a while. “I heard word of some…interesting shows being put on there.”

You cross your arms. “They’re not stage plays about our battle against Azazel, are they?”

“No.” Sachiko replies, “Not this time. I checked.”

You look at Syoko. She appears to be in deep thought. You wonder what sort of attraction she would choose first. Considering that she was shy and didn’t like the outside world much, you guessed she would pick something relaxing and calm at first. Maybe she would agree with her roommate, and go for the stage theatre. Or perhaps she would choose the merry-go-round, or the animal garden, or the—

“I want to go on the rollercoaster.” Syoko says.

Eh?

“Pardon?” Sachiko says, with a bit of a quiver in her voice.

“The r-rollercoaster.” Syoko repeats herself. “I…I want to go on it.”

“You sure about this?” You ask. Why is Sachiko trembling, by the way?

“Yes.”

“The rollercoaster…” STREUM taps the side of his helmet. “I have received data that it is a similar to a train of tracks, only that the tracks can ascend or descend. Its main purpose is to provide ‘thrills’ for those who have reached the sufficient level of bravery to take part. It sounds most interesting. Brothers and sisters, let’s go!”

“Okay, rollercoaster it is!” You say. To be honest, you would’ve preferred to go on the rollercoaster later that day, possibly in the afternoon after lunch. Then again, you did say you were fine with anything. And besides, there was some merit in conquering the most treacherous ride in the park at the start.

Sachiko appears that she wants to say something, but she gets dragged along by the rest of you.

Fifteen minutes later, you and your friends have crossed the park and are now waiting in line. The big monstrosity, named the Black Dragon, looms in front of you, like a towering beast overlooking an innocent Tokyo. Sachiko is standing right beside you, and she appears to be shivering.

“Sachiko…” You say.

“Yes?” She jumps in fright.

“Are you okay?”

“Am I okay? Hahah, of course I am. The Koshimizu heiress is not fazed by anything, because she is so cute and unflappable.” Sachiko responds, not looking convinced at her own words at all. “I’m not in a state of panic because I have to go on the Black Dragon, not at all! See? Look at how relaxed I am.”

“Sachiko, if you’re not feeling comfortable, you can back out.” You say. “It’s just a ride, after all. No biggie.”

“No, I can do this.” Sachiko says, trembling in her spot. She’s trying to keep up an aloof smile of confidence, and is failing. “My former producer took me skydiving once. This is fine. And besides, all my other friends are taking part. What kind of heiress would I be if I backed out and left you all behind?”

“Sachiko, the Black Dragon isn’t going to kill us.” You says. “This isn’t a battlefield.”

Soon enough, you are strapped in and the cars are steadily making their way up the hill. Syoko is sitting next to you, and she seems fine. Sachiko and STREUM are in front, and the former look ready to burst out of her restraints and soar into the skies in fear. The Black Dragon isn’t that scary, right? Yeah, you were traumatized by it as a child, but you survived. And now you’re older and stronger, so this should be easier!

You tell yourself that as you take a good look at the sheer height of the rollercoaster.

Then the cars head over the hill, and drop straight down the tracks.

That could’ve gone a lot worse. Sure, you screamed a lot on the way down, and up, but it was the point of riding a rollercoaster. You won’t get the full experience if you didn’t shout at least half of your throat hoarse. Having said that, Sachiko shrieked way more than necessary. And STREUM had been completely silent, not uttering a single word. Or perhaps the rush of the wind and the screech of the tracks had drowned out his incredibly deep voice.

You emerge from the ride, exhilarated and having thoroughly enjoyed yourself. “That was fun.” You grin. “I should get bro to come with me next time.”

“Research has progressed to 10%.” STREUM mutters. “Is spending more brouzouf a good idea?”

Sachiko doesn’t look good, at all. Her face is green, and she is clutching her stomach. Her charisma had been thrown out the window, splattered on the pavement and the bloody chunks used to sweep up the glass. “I…I think I need a moment.” She moans, and runs off before you can say anything else.

“Hyahaha! Oh man, that was awesome!” She yells, causing several people in the crowd to stare. “Black Dragon? AHAHAHAHA! My ass, it’s more like a Black Wimp!

She has entered her full Madness Enhancement. Her berserker nature is on display for the world to see. Her previous shy and quiet demeanour has vanished, now replaced by an erratic and brutal persona. It was quite a jarring shift. Nobody expected the thirteenth, support character of the party to suddenly pull out an electrical guitar and go heavy metal on their asses. During battle, Syoko’s normal clothes would vanish and be replaced with a death metal attire, complete with leather fittings and metallic spikes. At least she could still talk in her madness, unlike you, who spent most of your time in the state roaring at your opponent.

“Hey Kazuya! KAZUYA!” Syoko yells, tugging on your shirt. Her eyes are wide and unfocused, and Gray Soul starts barking at the aura of insanity radiating off her. “Let’s go on the ride. It was fun! COME ON, LET’S GO!”

Damn, looks like the rollercoaster has worked up Syoko into a frenzy. You’ve seen her before, in battles and skirmishes with Azazel’s army. Her fighting style is the most effective when she’s at this point. All her parameters increase, and she used her electric guitar to send waves of damaging sound at her opponents. Her dementation techniques are also boosted, and her Noble Phantasm can only be used when she’s in this state.

You know all of this. Syoko didn’t to agree to join the party immediately. Like Laura, Law, STREUM and others, she had to be beaten down at first. The strange thing was, you had been the one to defeat her. All the others had their bodies crushed by your bro.

You scratch your head. You need to find a way to let Syoko work off some steam, before she whipped out her trusty instrument and blew up a house or something. Her tugging is getting stronger, and it’s threatening to tear your clothes. You notice that her nails have suddenly become as sharp as daggers.

An imaginary light bulb goes off in your head. Perfect. This is a great idea. It’s not the rollercoaster, but it’s nearly as fun.

“Hey Syoko.” You say.

“What?” she shouts.

“Let’s go somewhere else. The line is pretty damn long right now,” You gesture to the mass of people standing outside the entrance to the Black Dragon, “and there’s more fun to be had elsewhere. Trust me.”

Syoko crosses her arms. “No!” she harrumphs. “That’s boring. I want to stay here!”

“Hey, don’t get your panties in a twist.” Your smirk. “This is going to be awesome, I tell you. Just come with me…”

You end up crossing the entire park for the next attraction. Syoko can barely contain her excitement. Her madness high would last for a while. She needed some good, old physical activity to work it off. Sachiko returns from puking up expensive breakfast food and wobbles back to you. Her face turns pale at the mention of the next visit.

The four of you arrive at the scene.

“What is the purpose of the bumper cars?” STREUM asks, while the two of you are waiting in queue.

You survey the available cars. Syoko, in her frenzy, goes for the biggest and baddest car, which just coincidentally happens to have a skull displayed on the front. The other participants, mostly kids and their dads, shiver in fright at the madness-induced friend of yours. You shrug and take another look at the options. Which one do you choose?

You then look back up at the attendant.

She looks creeped out of her mind, but leaves you to it. You snort in amusement and grip your hands on the steering wheel. You crashed into a tree the first time you attempted to drive, but bumper cars are totally manageable. STREUM and Sachiko give you weird looks at they enter their own bumper cars. STREUM has chosen the bulky car, and Sachiko has chosen the fast one.

Soon, the buzzer to commence the round goes off. You drive off, and aim for the nearest car. But before you can put the pedal to the medal, an announcement sounds through the speaker.

“TIME ATTACK ROUND HAS STARTED. HIT YOUR OPPONENTS HARD TO GAIN POINTS. THREE HITS MEANS YOU’RE OUT. LAST MAN STANDING WILL WIN A PRIZE.”

Okay, this is new.

Your friends stare at each other, then at the rest of the cars.

“Oh, is this a challenge I hear?” Sachiko smirks, her smile growing menacing. Her fallen angel wings sprout from her back.

A picture of a unicorn is emblazoned on the back. Cherubs with freakishly large heads are displayed on the front. The entire thing look like a sugary infested candyland. If it wasn’t attached to magnetic rails and had no seats, you would’ve mistaken it for a car-shaped cake.

Syoko gets to work immediately. She charges forward in that big black monstrosity of hers, slamming right into two bumper cars at once and sending their occupants reeling. They scream, and you can’t help but feel sorry for the poor kids. The name of Syoko Hoshi graced far and wide among the Underworld battlegrounds, as she blasted the eardrums of demons and crushed their minds with madness. For some reason, the demons seemed particularly furious as Syoko. You had an inkling why.

Sachiko, being the opportunist that she is, is taking advantage of her speed. She zips between her opponents, attacking when she feels necessary. So far, she hasn’t been hit once. But would that change in the following minutes?

STREUM, unfortunately, has picked the short straw. His bulky car makes him an easy target, and he is getting hit from all sides by excited children. Of course, that may have more to do with the fact that he is now stuck in a corner, and can’t seem to figure out how to reverse. Maybe the bumper car is too low-tech for him figure out with his enlightened cyberpunk knowledge. That seems unlikely, because you know for a fact that these things are outfitted with the latest magitech technology, developed by Koshimizu industries.

You decide to evade. No sense in rushing into battle now. Actually, you rushed into battle a lot. That was your fighting style: cleave things in half first, soak up damage with your magical resistance and endurance and ask questions later. You’re not on your two feet, however, and simply drive. A car has the poor judgement to spin in front of you. You ram into it and take it out of the game.

You drive some more.

Syoko is proving herself to be a total beast, easily destroying half the competition. STREUM is out. Sachiko is still zipping around.

You catch someone on your control panel. A large, pink button. The text ‘BETA: DANGER’ is displayed on it. What will you do?

You smash the rest of the participants aside. They are all shocked by your pink, fast-moving automobile of pain and agony. Five seconds of invincibility left. And then there were two participants remaining, both heroes and both berserkers.

You, the wielder of the madness induced Gray Soul and the second-in-command of the Party of Thirteen. On the other end is Syoko, mistress of dementation and the last member of the party. Both of you stare at each other deep in the eyes. This takes you back, to three months ago. You and Syoko and duelled each other, madness against madness. History was repeating again, it seems.

You press your pedal and charge forward. Syoko does the same.

The bumper cars screech against the tarmac floor. You and Syoko charge at each other, shouting your lungs out. The presence of Gray Soul leaps out and darkens the area. You see Syoko’s madness appear, and it takes the form of a group of mushroom knights charging towards the distance. Three metres. Two metres.

One metres.

And then your car screeches to a halt. You look down.

“FATAL ERROR. NULL POINTER EXCEPTION. SHUTTING DOWN…”

Your invincibility disappears.

“Oh, what the fu—”

Syoko’s big black monster car slams into you, and you are sent reeling. You have lost. A nearby crowd, which has grown surprisingly large during your match, cheers. Syoko climbs out of her car, her normally pale face now flush with victory. The owner of the bumper car stadium hands her a limited edition doll as a reward. It appears to be a chibi blonde girl, with a deformed head and large eyes. Hey, didn’t you see a girl like that on television before?

Even though you lost, the match was still fun. You get out of your car, grinning, and re-join your friends at the entrance. Looks like they feel the same way. Syoko bounds over to you, clutching the doll to her chest. Her smile is wide.

You and Sachiko look at each other, and smile. You can sense the madness fading from Syoko’s system already.

“Let’s get some lunch, then.” Sachiko says.

You and your friends walk over to the food section of Megiddolaon. There are numerous stands, and the scent of fried food wafts through your nostrils. It’s nearing lunchtime, so of course the lines are getting longer, and the tables are becoming fuller. There’s a wide range of foods here, and you have all the time in the world to choose. What do you get?

You eye swivels to the mentioned stand. Drool escapes from your lips. You lick it up.

Syoko looks at you weirdly. You pay her no heed. Instead, you dash towards the stand and jump into line as fast as you can. Ten minutes later, you return to your friends, carrying an entire stack of crispy treats, along with two beef hamburgers, a bag of chips and a can of drink. Sachiko has gotten a garden salad. STREUM has fried noodles, and is somehow consuming them without lifting his helmet. Syoko is busily eating through a bowl of mushroom soup, while chewing some bread on the side.

“You’re going to die of cholesterol poisoning if you eat all that.” Sachiko remarks.

“Screw you Koshimizu, today is a day off.” You retort, chomping through a croquette with one side of your mouth and chewing a chip with the other.

Before long, you and your friends have devoured your meals. You all sit back in your chairs, stomachs full.

“Where to next?” STREUM asks.

“How about somewhere relaxing?” Sachiko says, her eyes lighting up. “We could use one after the hectic stuff this morning.” She then shivers, but manages to retain her composure. “I have just the idea…”

Said idea turns out to be the Ferris wheel. You stare up at the monstrosity, with its sixteen carriages and long steel arms. Well, you had hoped to check out the arcade, or the theatre, but you guess this would do. Sachiko was right, it would be nice to cool down after the action-packed adventure at the bumper cars, and the adrenaline-pumping task of riding the Black Dragon.

The four of you get into pairs, and line up. This queue is a lot smaller than the other rides. Guess the Ferris wheel isn’t as exciting as the other attractions, which was sort of the point, you mused. The view at the top would be nice, too.

“Kazuya, get in.” Sachiko suddenly says.

“What?”

“It’s your turn. Hurry up. You’re making everyone wait.” She responds.

You feel STREUM’s powerful arms shove you in the back, and you are sent stumbling into the small space. The door shuts behind you, and you sense the carriage ascend into the sky. The wheel is moving. You sigh and slump down on seat.

“K-Kazuya?”

Suddenly, everything hits you. You jolt upright and stare at the person opposite you. Or should you say, the girl.

This is the current situation. You are stuck in a ferris wheel carriage with Syoko.

Alone.
