You are Clarissa, a high-school student, Kimiko's Substitute Shinigami and Karakura Town's only spiritual balancer and protector.

Naoko, your newfound friend and (something like) a Quincy, just promised to help you out with your Shinigami duties. She's a pretty quiet person, but you can't help but enjoy her company. It's not really 'entertaining' so much as it is pleasant. It's relaxing to be with her, most of the time. Once you get used to the awkward silence that she stubbornly maintains.

Or maybe you're just feeling really happy about having someone to actually back you up. Maybe now you'll stand a chance against the average Hollow despite your weakened state. Maybe now people aren't guaranteed to die because of your incompetence and the inability to cut through a coffee table even if your life depended on it.

Well, you may be exaggerating a bit, but probably not by too wide of a margin. If you had to go up against that regenerating Hollow, Clay Bone, or whatever his name is, you'd get torn to pieces. You just need to last through one more night on your own, and then the two of you can become the Ultimate Evil Spirit Slaying Tag Team.

And then, it should be fine. It should get easier.

You hang out with Naoko for a while longer, helping her catch up with her studies and tell her about the little things at school. Casual chit-chat that was rather one-sided, really, but you've gotten used to it by now, more or less.

You had to leave on Naoko's insistence, because your stomach was growling and being annoying, though she was probably just concerned. You insistently didn't let her leave the bed to cook you anything, and trying to cook by yourself is pretty much guaranteed to burn the whole house down.

Well, it's probably a good idea to stay close to Kimiko anyway, considering that a Hollow might pop up at any moment.

You're on your way home when you suddenly hear the cheery tune of your phone's ringtone. Wait, 'cheery'? This isn't your ringtone! Why is your phone making these cutesy noises?!

...Kimiko must have done it. She must have replaced your theme with generic J-Pop. Who else could have? Is this supposed to be funny?

You're quick to take it out, feeling embarrassed that your phone is playing a song like this in public. You answer it without sparing a glance at the caller, because you don't want people to hear this for even a moment longer.

"...Yeah?"

"Clarissa?" You recognize Ren's voice on the other end of the line. "Are you free right now? Could you come over to talk about something?"

"Whaddya need, Ren?"

"It's just... the dream thing again, I guess. I'm still bothered by it."

"...You alright?"

"I just want to talk about it some more, I guess. I couldn't really do it at school, so..."

...

>Don't go; try to convince her that everything is fine. "Ren, there's really nothing to worry about. You just had a weird dream."

To be totally honest I think I'd like Kimiko more if she wasn't running around in Akio's body.

Yeah it's some Edgar Allan Poe/Steven King baloney I tell you what.

"Alright, Ren. I'll be there in a few." You tell your friend.

"Alright, thanks! I, uh... I'm sorry to bother you with this crap, Clarissa." Ren blurts out, apologetic but relieved.

"It's no big deal, Ren, really. I'm hanging out, anyway." You try to calm her down a bit.

"Oh, really? With who?"

You keep up a casual chat on your way to Ren's place. Oh, that's right, you still haven't told her that you're friends with Naoko. Let's just hope she won't ask about the circumstances of your sudden friendship.

"Well, nobody right now. I've been at Naoko's place. Just to check up on her, you know? Her bein' sick and all."

"Naoko? Really? I didn't think you were close. I mean, you go to that dojo all the time, but I've never seen you actually hang out with her. What happened?" Ren chirps away cheerfully. It's good that she's distracted from her problems, but the questions she's asking are kind of troublesome.

"Well... guess it started with a fight, and we just sort of took off from there, ya know?" You chuckle, though the only response you get is concerned silence. "I mean, we fought over something really stupid, and... and just realized it, I guess. We laughed it off and became buddies."

"...I'm not a fighter like you two, so maybe that's why I don't really get it."

"...Yeah. That's probably it." You pass by the cafe you usually hang out with your group of friends in. You throw a glance inside, through the large window by the entrance, and keep walking on. "I guess Naoko'll be having lunch with us from now on, you don't mind, ri-..."

"Yeah, I don't mind. Naoko's kind of quiet, and... I guess she can get kind of scary- no, intimidating, sometimes, but... I guess that's just a bad first impression of mine. And of most others..." She pauses, probably expecting you to say something. "...You there, Clarissa? Is the line faulty?"

>>
>>39260236
"No, no, I hear ya. And yeah, she only looks threatening, but she wouldn't hurt a fly, I'm sure. Anyway, I'll meet you at your place."

"Alright. See ya."

You hang up, and look into the cafe from the very corner of the window, trying to not be seen. Yeah, you stopped and backtracked a few steps, but only because something caught your eye.

Your brother is sitting in the cafe with some other guy about his age.

It just struck you that you haven't seen him hang out with anyone his age for a long, long time. Well, outside of school, obviously. That's why it's so weird to look at now. Well, uh...

...Alright, maybe you'll just let him be. If you go too hard on him, he'll probably never hang out with anyone ever again. You really shouldn't interrupt his date.

The guy Paul's with finally notices you, but you slip away and get going. On the rest of your way, you can't help but break out into giggles and chuckles, thinking about those two, and causing quite a few strange glances your way from passer-byers.

As cool as Paul looks at school, he's probably really awkward outside of it, because his being-busy-all-the-time must mean he's not too experienced in casual situations... right? You're not actually a psychologist, so maybe that's not how it works at all. Well, he looked kind of tense hanging out with a guy already, so just how awkward would he be with a girl? He does a good job of evading them; maybe it's because he knows that he'd end up embarrassing himself.

...Paul couldn't be actually uninterested in them completely, as he says all the time, right? Haha, there's no way. Your brother's just an unsociable workaholic. It's a miracle someone managed to pull him out at all, really. And it only took a... a cute guy.

Alright, this is where you'd like to stop that train of thought. It's getting pretty weird.

...

It takes just a few minutes to reach Ren's apartment building from where you were. As you make yourself upstairs, to the floor on which your friend lives, you check your phone. Specifically, its playlist.

Yeah, your suspicions were on point - someone replaced all of your songs with Suzu-chan's themes. Seriously! Suzu-chan! Does Kimiko think she's being funny? This is kind of messed up. And she deleted all of your stuff, too. It would have been something you could just shrug off if it wasn't for this. Seriously, when you get back home, you're going to make her download everything back.

Caught up in annoyance and frustration, you end up tripping on the steps and falling. You manage to keep yourself from tumbling all the way down, but you dropped your phone and stubbed your knee. You let loose a few expletives while grabbing your cell. It turned off, but it's not broken.

The door of the apartment a few steps up opens, and Ren comes barging out, looking concerned.

"Clarissa! Are you alright?" She walks downwards, coming closer and offering you a hand.

"Yeah, I'm cool. Fuckin' stairs too goddamn... slippery."

"Slippery?.. Really? ...Are you hurt?"

You look at your legs, and there's a bruise on your right knee. Well, it's nothing, so you shake your head. You take Ren's hand and she helps you stand up, after which the two of you enter her house.

...

Ren's room must be some kind of definition of girly. Now that it's better lit, you get a good refresher of what it looks like: pink wallpapers and bedsheets, shelves and corners occupied by cute stuffed animals, the cream-colored floor littered with magazines, music CDs, a bunch of modern devices; a humbly sized white desk is placed by the window, probably meant as a place to study on - notebooks and pencils occupy its surface.

(2/3)
>>
>>39261609
It really makes your room look like a guy's by comparison. Though, unlike your room, Ren's hasn't changed at all over the course of years, save for a few pieces of furniture rarely changing their placements for the sake of convenience or maybe whim. Well, there's probably no reason to change anything. It's a pretty nice room, and it's wide and big. You wish your room was more like this.

"So... did you want to talk about something, Ren?" You sit on one of the chairs in her room. The red-haired girl sits down on her bed, and begins her bizarre story.

"Yeah, I... I think I saw my uncle a couple nights ago. He died in that... that earthquake a few days earlier."

Kimiko's device must have been faulty. She's not supposed to remember anything, didn't she say that? Ren continues after you nod at her.

"And then I... I think something bad happened. Something painful. It... it couldn't have been a dream, Clarissa. Dreams don't hurt, right?"

"Maybe it didn't actually hurt, and you just... thought it did?" You suggest, though it's basically a lie.

"I really don't think so, Clarissa. I really felt it. And that's not all. After that dream, I think I started to see things. People that shouldn't be there, just... walking around on the streets. They have weird chains on their chests, and... they're kind of transparent." Ren keeps talking, though her voice keeps going softer and softer, and her expression slowly crumbles into a desperate one. She probably realizes how ridiculous this all must sound.

(3/4)

>>39261659
You don't really know what you should say, or, well, what you can or are allowed to say. You've never told anyone you could see ghosts, well, except for one person who is currently dead, but you're not sure that you can spill the beans without spilling too much. You probably can't explain your knowledge about it without talking about your involvement. Ren can be pretty tenacious about getting to the truth. Maybe it'd be better to keep her not knowing anything, completely separated from the dangerous spiritual world?

Either way, she's looking at you expectantly, almost pleadingly. Maybe she's expecting you to call her crazy.

You nod and let out a sigh.

"Don't worry, Ren. I believe you. I need to make a phone call, though." You raise your phone and press a few buttons. The other girl doesn't look too pleased at this.

"W-wait, who are you calling?" She asks, kind of nervous.

"Just someone who's in the know about this crap. Someone who'll help." You casually wave her off, as a way of telling her not to worry. Ren appears to be quite worried despite your attempt to calm her down.

"I-I'm not crazy! Stop it, I don't need help!" The girl stands up and reaches closer to you, probably trying to take the phone off your ear. "Even if you don't believe me, just don't call anyone!"

"Who do you think I'm calling? The police? Chill out, Ren, sheesh. You're not crazy; I seriously believe what you say." You put a white socked foot up to her chest to hold off her advance. She looks quite baffled at that, and it only makes her try harder. Ren grabs your leg and tries to push it aside; she can't really overpower you with her meager strength, though. "Hey, I'm telling you to-... Kimiko?"

"Kimiko? Who's that?" Ren curiously mumbles and lays off, maybe understanding that it's not the emergency services you're calling or anything like that. She goes quiet, probably trying to listen in on your conversation with the Shinigami you're a substitute for.

You give Kimiko a brief rundown of what's going on right now. She sounds a bit displeased that you've been up to something potentially relevant to her without telling her anything, but, well, she also understands that it's not really the point right now. Her answer to your issue is pretty brief.

"Tell her whatever you think will keep her uninvolved with our work. You know Ren better than I do, Clarissa."

Well, it's pretty simple in that case. You end the call, and put your phone back into the pocket of your skirt.

(1/3)
>>
>>39263121
You'll just tell her everything and make the danger so clear that she won't want to get involved. Now, it's you who begins a bizarre story: you tell her about life after death, about the souls of the common people that are left behind to linger in this world, about the Hollows that hunt them, and about the Shinigami that protect and save the innocents. Ren stares at you with wide eyes, but listens to every word.

You don't get the chance to slip away from talking about your part-time job, either - with the fact that it wasn't just a dream confirmed as the truth, she immediately reminds you that she had seen you back then as well. You tell her how you had the misfortune of becoming a Shinigami intern after someone's workplace accident, and now you have to clean up the mess until things go back to normal.

You left out the part where you killed someone, though.

Ren's eyes are beaming with a strange mix of admiration and worry.

"But why you? You don't have to risk anything; you're not really involved, right?"

"I'm the only one who can," You take a brief pause, and then think of something really cool to say. "...I mean, if I don't, who will?"

The way she's looking at you is making you feel like a big damn hero. You bashfully smile.

"Well, that's the end of that story, I think."

"I just can't believe it! I mean, I do believe it, but... it's that complicated, and yet so simple? You just... explained one of mankind's biggest mysteries in like a few hundred words?" Ren stands up, and while frowning, shakes her head as if in disbelief, hands placed on her hips.

You nod. It's a really good thing she isn't overly skeptical about your story. Or, well, worst case scenario, she's keeping it very well hidden.

You suddenly spot something on her leg.

"When'd you get hurt, Ren?" You point at a bruise on her knee, and the red-haired girl looks down in surprise. She shrugs.

(2/3)

>>39263162
"I don't know. I bet you managed to kick me on accident, you-..." She freezes midsentence, eyes widening again, looking at your leg. You glance at it as well.

"Alright, alright, let's not panic." You try to keep it cool, though you are obviously quite surprised about all of this.

"Did you do this? I don't..." Ren's eyes dart back and forth in a confused panic.

"I'm pretty sure you did this, Ren," You say that, and Ren looks at you with the desperate expression of an accused child. "I mean, I don't actually know. Let's... let's go to a professional."

She still looks lost. You take her hand and drag her off.

"S-slow down! A professional? You mean that Kimiko you talked to?"

You nod and make sure to hurry.

...

Your room. Kimiko is carefully studying a very nervous Ren.

"A-Aiko? Are you a superhero, too?" She blurts out something stupid, and Kimiko stands up to investigate her more closely. "Stop looking at me like that, you're being really weird..."

She pokes and rubs a bit at her injured knee, probably to make sure that it's a real thing rather than just a speck of dirt or paint.

"Do you think the mad scientist guy had a hand in this?" You ask.

"I think that if it was Mayuri, it would be more obvious. It'd probably be... quite gory. Subtlety isn't really his thing." Kimiko mutters, and grabs Ren's hand with both of hers. She then looks into the red-haired girl's eyes, waiting for something. Ren begins to grow angry; Kimiko's not really explaining anything, and just being a weirdo. "...Well?" The smaller girl finally says something after an awfully long, awkward pause.

"Well, what, 'well?' ?!" Ren finally blows up, her confusion now fully converted into irritation.

"Do it."

"I don't know how to do it! Guide me through it! I'm new to this, unlike you! The two of you are probably very experienced at this!"

Ren continues shouting demands for explanations, and Kimiko keeps calmly telling her to keep going. After about fifteen minutes of easy to misinterpret yelling, they finally get to practical experiments. The Shinigami bruises herself on the hand, and, after several long-lasting attempts, Ren manages to obtain the same bruise, while removing Kimiko's own. They do it a few more times, just to make sure. Your friend really seems to get the hang of it after a while. Her hand is kind of messed up, though.

"Well, it's... a useless power." Kimiko suddenly makes something akin to a verdict. Ren looks shocked, and, well, you kind of are, too.

"W-what do you mean it's useless?" The red-haired girl blurts out. "It's like a healing power! I... I can help people with this!"

Kimiko shakes her head, though.

...

>"Yeah, what do you mean it's useless? It looks pretty damn helpful to me."

"...Can you transmit wounds the other way around?" You ask the question that's been bothering you ever since the first 'transition' happened. As soon as you ask it, Kimiko turns towards you, eyes widened in amazement. Bafflement, actually. She doesn't look pleased with your question at all. Ren, on the other hand, seems quite into it.

"That sounds cool! I wonder if I can do it..."

"Yeah. Yeah, try it on Clarissa." Kimiko suggests, waving a hand your way. What's with her reaction? What did you do wrong now?

"Yeah, yeah, I will!" Ren approaches, reaching out to grab you with an uninjured hand.

"Wait, why me?" You protest.

"You're the toughest and biggest here. ...Stop squirming! Stand still and... and just take it!"

...Okay, that one just MUST have been on purpose. It was bad enough to make you stop struggling. Ren keeps up the hold on your hand for a while longer, and then it suddenly spikes with pain. You jerk it back and out of her clutch, and the effect is quite apparent - the injuries are on your hand now, rather than hers.

"This is really cool." You mumble as you inspect the bruises. "You can do... all sorts of crap with this, Ren."

You praise her a bit, and she beams with admiration at her untarnished hand.

"Clarissa, a word?" Kimiko takes you aside, outside of your room, for a bit. "What are you doing? Are you out of your mind? Don't try to encourage her. Her power might be useful, but we can't do anything with it, and she shouldn't be doing anything with it, either. You don't want her to get involved in our work, do you?"

...

>"You're right. I'll make it clear to her."
>"Her power might come in handy, you never know. She doesn't have to directly fight Hollows just because she has that ability."

"Of course not, but our work might decide to get involved with her so she should at least know the basics so she's not at risk of hurting herself or others. Don't worry, hunting hollows will still just be our thing."

"It's not that simple anymore, Kimiko. Ren's not an average person. Didn't you say that spiritually stronger people are more likely to be the targets of Hollows?" You ask, placing a hand on your hip.

"I really don't see how keeping her closer to Hollows might solve that." Kimiko shakes her head.

"We have to teach her how to defend herself in case we're not around."

"The only way I see that happening would be Ren shooting herself in the forehead and then touching a Hollow," Kimiko shrugs. "And I really don't think she can do both at the same time, no matter how much she trains. The best way of keeping people safe is getting rid of Hollows before they can harm anyone, and not while they're doing it."

"We'll still be the ones hunting Hollows. She doesn't need to do it for us, or even with us. But we can't just ignore her and tell her to live her life normally. I don't think she can do that, and I don't think that she should."

Kimiko lets out a sigh. "I think I know what you're trying to say, though I don't agree with it; I simply don't like it when humans get involved. It's always more trouble than it's worth, and no, I'm not talking about you right now, Clarissa. Shinigami are supposed to protect everyone regardless of their spiritual power, and they usually do it well enough for it to not be a crisis whenever a human can see the other side."

"We're not really in that kind of a position, though. We're barely making ends meet as is. It's best that we all stick together and help each other out."

Kimiko seems to finally relent and nods. "She's your friend, so I'll have to ask you to vouch for her and take responsibility."

"That's fine. And don't worry, I obviously won't have her patrol with us or anything dangerous like that."

"I'll trust you with it, Clarissa. You should tell her about your decision. Well, it's not that you really have to tell her anything - just do the same thing you've been doing so far."

You nod as well. Before she opens the door back into your room, Kimiko adds something.

"I hope you're ready for tonight's patrol. We haven't done anything about wandering souls in a while. Let's hope they didn't attract any attention."
