In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of the thousands of Imperial provinces that form the front line in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But the Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commissioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale.

Please be advised, that Communications Officer Luigi coordinated a space battle over Artoria: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/39219998/

Result: Spectacular victory for the Chapter, unidentified enemy Hekate-Class Cruiser was set ablaze with no casualties on the side of the Imperium. 2 sets of enemy transports have been unaccounted for, however they had no means to leave the system.

+++

Current situation: Chapter Master is on the bridge of Battle Barge "Aspera Dominus" in the Artoria System. What are your next actions?

Attached: Astromaps of Artorian Solar System
>>
Firstly we need a report from that Escort that went after the unidentified ship that fled the system.

Pax Sepulchrum should join Aspera over Artoria, and we need information on what's happening on the surface so we can prepare to make planetfall. Full scans and try to establish communications with the surface.

We got plenty of time during the space battle to bombard the planet with Aspera Dominus and conduct attack runs with the Thunderhawk Gunships, we need to resolve those.

If there's still nurgle forces on the planet we need to ship every citizen to safe and easily defend-able regions like fortresses, that we can protect from any attack and infection, and this also allows us to bombard other regions without risk of collateral casualties.

The original transmission said the Chaos Marines were trying to do something with the mass grave sites, check that out.
>>
>>39328590
Also the Silent Guardians should try and find those enemy shuttles that split up and went to the moons, hunt them down and kill them.
>>
>>39328590
Furthermore the other navy ships should watch the burning chaos cruiser, for activity within or anything getting close to it.

Watch the "civilians" for disease and shit

The original transmission also sounded suspiciously like the Imperial forces were losing, not winning.

Also rather than a hasty warning have our astropath send a preliminary status report as soon as we have initial intel on surface activity. Should include a description of the vessel to se if it matches the attacks on that pilgrim ship and the sighting from the navy to which we reacted.
>>39328633
I don't think we should order them around, ask for their help and establish a chain of command, not take them as underlings for granted, like we do to the navy

As for the transports, they probably are not warp capable so rather then engage in a costly battle monitor them from a safe distance and watch if they run low on fuel or not. warpfuel is a thing

While the battle was raging in the outer reaches of the system, Aspera Dominus approached Artoria seeking to hit enemies on the ground as soon as possible.

Once you approach the planet broken transmissions from the smaller untouched cities and demoralised PDF forces inform you that enemy entered the system about 3 weeks ago and after a battle that didn't last a full day destroyed two Falchion Class Escorts that were defending the system. Afterwards enemy cruiser proceeded towards Artoria, where it engaged in indicriminate violence, sending down it's bomber fleet to decimate Planetary Capital Deira and 5 other major cities, inflicting close to a 800 thousand casualties after a week of bombardment. To crown their victory they dropped an atomic warhead on the main Cathedral of the Imperial Cult in the city of Vallegis, killing another 150 thousand people.

Afterwards Chaos warband descended upon Artoria in person, majority of their forces landed on the island of Kithar, while smaller splinters of their forces continued to sow Chaos and destruction in other parts of the planet. As PDF headquarters were incinerated in the first hours of the attack, local resistance was scattered, but continued up until your arrival.

Please roll d100 for orbital scan identifying enemies. The higher the roll, the more enemies were left behind during their evacuation (if their attempt to flee could be called so). Number indicates percentage of the landing force.

Please roll d10 for potential concentrations suitable for bombardment

Please roll d10-1 for successful orbital attacks against enemy targets.

Sword Frigate from the Alpha Squadron reported that they've managed to a get a 100% confirmation on the identity of the ship which was escaping the system - it was another Chaos ship which was last logged on the Imperial records as having been engaged in a battle with Space Wolves near the Guryan Moons in Segmentum Pacificus in 311.M41. That ship is a Hades Class Heavy Cruiser "Melancholy", which was believed by the Inquisitor Orlani Carad to have belonged to the Nurglite Warband known as the Ebon Host.

Due to the luck and the skill of the Captain Flett, who was commanding the Sword Frigate, Chaos warship didn't notice them and didn't obliterate the lone escort. In fact Captain Flett was brave enough to risk sticking around or long enough to read the warp patterns of the jump taken by the "Melancholy", which seems to lead to the Subsector Tyranus, specifically a world named Corozia Secundus, which is located deep within the Grave.

Ok before anything else, inform that that the heretics tried to flee upon seeing the imperial might and their ship now burns somewhere in orbit. And we are here to aid them. The recent orbital strikes were holy imperial cannons that destroyed heretical strongholds

Loyal subjects of the Imperium, this is Chapter Master of the Ghosts of Retribution here with our brothers of the Silent Guardians. We are the Emperor's Astartes and we are here to liberate your planet from the taint of the Enemy. All military and resistance leaders are instructed to coordinate with us via this frequency to aid us in our task.
Instruct our captains to begin collecting and coordinating with the ground troops with an eye out for any heretics trying to impersonate loyalists. CMQ is left free for other tasks for the moment.

These guys are confirmed Chaos. 'low morale' will just resort in panicked attempts to summon deamons or something.

Give no warning and send them into oblivion via orbital bombardment.

Also, do we get a bonus for having squadrons of thunderhawk gunships deployed in atmosphere to locate targets for Aspera before Aspera was in orbit? And for deploying fighter squadrons to cover the thunderhawks/hunt enemy craft?

These were specified last thread, i believe.

Still, don't give any info on the orbital battle other than 'we are here to kick ass'. Enemy forces can and likely will have access to captured vox units. Strike the enemy and send them to oblivion. That will be best for allied morale.

Aspera Dominus managed to locate a total of 8 enemy concentrations, most of which were either temporary encampments or occupied starports. After their quick retreat around 81% percent of the 4000 strong enemy landing force remained on the planet, however coordinated airstrikes by the Thunderhawks and a few strikes from Aspera Dominus decimated all 8 encampments, effectively ending any possible resistance by the enemies.

Please roll a secret d6 roll

>>39329877

Your news make the Imperial citizens everywhere rejoice, servitors work non-stop for 3 hours, contacting a total of 112 cities and 22 separate PDF detachments, trying to bring all of those under unified control and to bring Artoria into a state of order. Roll d100 to determine how successful their actions were, on 75 and less planetary cohesion is restored.

+++

Also, I would like to ask not to refer to rolls and actions that have not been confirmed yet. Yes, you rolled 8 & 8 for targets and bombardments, but there could be either unseen/unknown modifiers or different actions taken by the enemy that could affect this result without your knowledge. So to avoid disappointment don't refer to actions that have not yet been confirmed. Emperor loves certainty! ;)

>>39329947
3 DoS = one of the transports was destroyed as it tried to return to Artoria, while the other one was tracked down to Heratis, a violatile volcanic world. We have aproximate coordinates (within 100km radius) where it landed but due to rampant magnetic storms on it's surface and extremely unpredictable atmosphere it's very hard to scan, meaning that it will be close to impossible to conduct orbital bombardment against their landing site. What shall be our next orders?

Meanwhile, warp seems to favour Nerial once more, Space Wolves reply by the end of the week.
>Greetings, Chapter Master! Sons of Fenris are always glad to be of help to the younger brothers in the Great Struggle. This ship, "Melancholy", was a formidable opponent, our wolf packs skirmished with it, but neither side was strong enough to bite the other's neck. We never managed to get the real purpose behind their actions, but their scent was not right, we felt dark presence with them, so beware, we strongly suspect that it might be a Plague Ship. When the first Astartes land on Artoria, there are no more enemies worthy of note. A dozen or so nurglite cultists who were out of the camp foraging are already dangling on the lamp posts by the side of the road leading to the Graxis, last major city that was mostly untouched by the bombardment campaign and thus it seems as if it is going to become at least a temporary planetary capital. Your prognosticators suggest that it appears that Artoria has a total of around 71 million people, most of which live in the countryside. Attacks on the major cities hurt the planet mostly through the destruction of centralised government - all intelectual elite, bureaucrats, military leaders and techpriests were living in the urban centres. It seems that it will take months or even more until the planet will return towards a semblance of order...

When your Apothecaries examine Sacred Fields - location of mass ground battles with Xo'nad during the crusade the conquered the Sector. There are some signs that there were atempts to build some sort of temple to Nurgle, however the work is half finished - it was mostly done by cultists and slave labour from the nearby villages, so it would have taken another couple of weeks for enemies to finish it. At the moment you can see that only foundation and the main part of the temple are finished. Many of the working tools are still laying around and with horror you realise that rockrete machines were used not only to make rockrete for the building blocks, but also as improvised sacrificial cages, where unfortunate builders were thrown in together with the chemicals and materials to become part of the building forever. You may roll your Perception(-10) on d100.

They were using Chaos Thunderhawks and those were escorted by fighters. Each group had d3 Thunderhawks, so my roll above(1) says how many there were in the transporters that escaped.

Silent Guardians have been summoned here by yourselves, so they are willing to listen to your suggestions, but they are not your subordinates.

Leutenant Terakon of the Silent Guardians 4th Company is the commander of their mission to Artoria, there are 5 brothers on each of their ships and there's also their 1st Company Veteran Terminator Namid accompanying Terakon. Terakon contacts you:
>Ave, Superior. Thy commands were adhered to, we downed one of their aethercraft, whilst another one remains in hiding on the Mundi Heratis. We art planning to commit area bombardment where the enemy hast landed, however pursuit is rulled out at the moment unless we receive additional reinforcements from thyself. Planetary atmosphere is unsuitable for our human armsmen to descend, corrosive fumes would eat through their suits in minutes, so only marines will be able to operate down there, which suggests that enemies were either suicidal or that some of them were Traitors. Shall we proceed as outlined?

As your repeat a mantra your mind starts to drift away from your body, back into the past and forward into the future at once. You see peaceful pilgrims, coming here to plant small bright orange flowers to honour the dead. Then, fire comes, an ugly snout of a Nurglite Traitor helmet appears. It doesn't stay for long, another fire descends from above, cleansing fire from above, enemy encampment in the distance is obliterated. But the ugly snout and three of his brothers were under the temple at the time, performing dark rites that no one should know about... But now you know. There is a hidden tunnel underneath the foundation. And then you see a vision of the Traitors descending down below. They are close... Neiton is master at what he does, he works quickly and efficiently. He can stitch arteries together while under artillery barrage, he can do a geneseed extraction while being under fire by orks, he can drag three brothers to safety at once while Iron Monks are aiming at him their Immolator. What happened to Shadow Master Renard was bad, but it wasn't beyond what Neiton could do. It was ricky, hard, but not impossible. Or at least Neiton thought so, before he started operating. First thing that astonished him was that Renard's flesh was not showing any signs of natural Astartes regeneration. For whatever reason Renard's body was acting as if he was already dead, despite the fact that he still drew slow, painful breaths. Then, something even more horrible happened. As Neiton was trying to catch a tertiary artery from Renard's destroyed heart, he noticed a maggot swimming in his blood. A fat, fully grown, ugly maggot. Then another one.
>Emperor preserve me...
Neiton continued trying to stabilise Renard, using all antiseptics and drugs available to him, but the maggots continued crawling over his brother and despite the best of Neiton's efforts, Shadow Master Renard after 4 minutes of agony died. He was one of the toughest marines you knew, but he wasn't strong enough to open his eyes again, he never regained consciousness, no last words, no final goodbye, just a painful gasp and a short convulsion and it was over. Only maggots continued crawling over his dead body and a fat evil god laughed somewhere down in the depths of your soul - another soul joins his garden to serve him for Eternity.

I am not sure whether you'll be able to do that. Please roll d100, you don't want to roll above 90.

Nurgle's hold over this place is not yet strong enough and Fate here can still be changed.

Let us finish this session here, if you are burning a Fate Point, Renard will live.
