Dat Bird: HereticalLoveQ

Your name is Vetarus Maximus Kapernieksus.

Commissar to a destroyed battalion. Demigod to a rended witch.

And you will have your revenge.

Seated high in your elaborately decorated chair of gilded golden skulls and ornately carved wood, you watch as your men scramble about below. Despite the almost sinfully decadent leather, you are anything but at ease.

“Status report!” You call out, eying the enemy outside in the cold empty dark beyond. A foul, alien foe of glimmering teeth and writhing ocean green appendages.

“Commissar, the enemy has us surrounded! Our batteries are being targeted!”

You grit your teeth and tighten down your hat as you stand.

“Direct all available guns to the front, we'll have to blow our way through!”

Immense explosions ring out silently in front of the massive ship upon your command. As though hell itself had been unleashed in front of you.

Even still, you know it won't be enough.

“Commissar, she's breaking through!” You hear one man on deck cry in dismay, even as you see the impossibly large maw as it widens in front of the vessel. Coming in fast.

Too fast.

“All hands, brac...!”

But your words are cut off as a massive gray gauntlet lands on your shoulder, and you turn your gaze up at the grizzled man there.
>>
“I hate to interrupt,” He smirks as his other hand plucks the hat from your head and slides it easily, knowingly, onto his own head, “But this is sort of my shtick.”

“Enough of the fireworks, you lot! Rig up the rear harpoon launcher and set to fire on my command!” The man calls, as each of the crew look up at him in awe.

That armor clad figure in the shiny black hat nods once as he cracks his knuckles together as his brow furrows.

“Hard to starboard!” He shouts before turning his gaze back upon the approaching goddess of the depths.

“It's time to go fishing...”

Your world seems to slow, to blur. Time stutters, stops, starts again. A crouching figure in black glances over at you with dead, cold blue eyes as it exhales a plume of smoke.
>>
With a loud, exasperated groan, you at last awaken from that bizarre dream. Well aware now that you are resting sprawled out on a cool tile floor of intricate mosaics. The art lost on you as your head pangs in obvious protest.

“Seven fucking hells...” You clamp a hand over your eyes in an attempt to block out the daylight as it pours in through windows barely covered by thin whips of billowing crimson cloth.

“Khepri!” You call out, “If you're really my shadow, bring me something strong to drink.”

With surprising swiftness, truly faster than you had expected, you hear a cup being set down beside your head.

Though as you blindly reach over to grasp for it, you feel it being pulled away from your fingertips.

“This isn't the time for games, you...” You stop and blink bleary eyes at the figure crouching there.

“You're still here?” You balk.

“Yeah,” Balad, the war rabbit of milk chocolate skin answers as she sits back and pushes your head away with a bare foot, “And if you want to feel better, this isn't going to help.”

Grasping her around the ankle, you pull the toes away from your mouth as you stick your other arm underneath yourself and push up until you get your legs under yourself. Standing now, you glower down at the bemused looking bunny.

“You just saw me turn into some giant monster only a few hours ago. Are you really sure you want to take that away from me?”

While you had only meant it partially as a threat, Balad's response of a small laugh starts making you look around for your axe.

“Sure, you can drink this cat ooze. You might feel better for a short time, but soon enough again you'll be back to where you are.” The rabbit replies.

“Well it just so happens I have a cure for that. Where's my fox?” You grumble, glancing around.

Khepri still stands a short distance away, one hand holding a large silver vessel, likely what she had poured for you. Her posture alone tells you that she's not entirely sure what to do.

When your eyes finally find the fennec, you aren't really all that surprised.

Sprawled atop some impressive cushion of velvety white, she has stained some of it as she drools from an open mouth as she slumbers in obvious satisfaction. Her small frame surrounded by no less than a dozen large platters, each as barren as the last.

“No need to wake her,” Balad rises to her feet and brushes some dust from her mostly bare legs, “I can set you up well enough.”

At her insistence, you take a seat upon one of the many lounging pieces of furniture, still feeling just as terrible as when you had first awoken.

The throbbing headache is bad enough, but your body still feels as drained and sore as it had the night previously. Without the sweet relief of inebriation, the sensation is quite apparent. As though you had just been in a trial of feats against Zyzzis, god of body himself.

When Balad at last returns, she's clutching some steaming goblet that she thrusts in front of your face.

“Drink this.” She adds, as though her actions didn't relay that enough.

Though you had expected something foul and bitter, the actuality is quite different. The liquid is smooth but entirely strange to your tongue. Mellow, but at the same time somehow energetic. You nevertheless consume it hurriedly before tossing the empty vessel aside and leaning back to rest.

You aren't even aware that you had fallen asleep again before you snap back awake. Pushing yourself upright seems easier now, and you are quickly aware of how much better your body feels. The ache mostly gone, and the band of ogres rampaging in your skull now silent.
>>

Looking to where Avael had been resting, you attempt to discern how long you had been out. Even more empty plates reside littered about her, maybe another half dozen. Though that doesn't tell you much. Could have been an hour, could have been twelve.

Khepri has curled herself up in the beam of light from one of the many large windows, appearing quite content and very asleep.

Balad sits on the floor just a short distance away from you, a small pitted knife in on hand as she shaves some sort of root.

“Finally back awake?” She asks without so much as glancing up.

Wordlessly you take several steps forward until your toes are at the edge of the still steaming pool of water. A massive squared bath deep enough to sink into fully.

Ripping the last shreds of your trousers away, you toss the scraps aside, hold your arms out from your sides, and let yourself fall into the water with a massive, slapping splash.

Startled, Khepri jolts upright with her ears high and alert, her predatory eyes wide as she quickly scans the room.

Rising from the hot water, you grab your wet beard with one hand and wring out as much water as you can. Fully awake now and quite ready to be out of the comforts of this expansive room.

Though you aren't sure who had dropped a clean set of clothes near the waters edge, you snatch up the cloth and leather and fur and hurriedly clothe yourself.

“There some sort of rush?” Balad asks curiously as you finally find your weapons and habitually strap the belt about your waist and secure the throwing axes at your back.

“I've lazed about enough for now. It's time to get moving.” You reply as you check the edge of your massive runic axe and find it satisfactory.

Khepri, seemingly used to readying herself in a hurry, is already up with her arms secure and her sandals strapped about her long legs.

Oi you git, I missed last thread because I thought you were covering for a hangover.

Good to see ya, and glad someone archived.
>>

I did so I ran a day later.

Balad hardly carries anything at all, so when she simply stands and lifts her immense mace of green stone from the tile, you figure that's all she has to do.

Leaving just one member of your party left.

Avael lets out a panicked shriek as you shove the furniture she had been laying on over with your leg. She falls to the floor in a tumble of soft blankets, clattering platters, and curses in some foreign tongue.

“What do that for!? Avael do nothing wrong!” The fox comes up with blue eyes shooting daggers.

“Are you sure you're a fennec and not a pig?” You frown and kick aside a plate.

“Calling Avael fat?”

“If we just lay around here, yeah you probably will be. Now get up, I've got adventuring to do and treasures to find.” You emphasize with a kick to another golden plate, sending it spinning across the room.

The fox just looks at you incredulously as she gathers up what few things she has and attempts to tug out some snarls in her golden curls. Nevertheless, she begrudgingly falls in step behind you as you kick open the large wooden door of the mansion and step out into the blazing desert sun.

A few crewmen call out to you cheerfully as they look up from their work of restoring the city alongside the cats. You learn that they have the water systems mostly back in order and the last of the embers stamped out. Thankfully the fires had never spread far enough to threaten any of the immense grain silos strewn about the city proper.

Working your way through the winding streets and alleys, you finally come upon just the man you're looking for.

Hunched over a low table, resting his calloused palms atop the wood, Grinstone seems quite busy pouring over some scattered scrolls. So enthralled that he doesn't even look up to acknowledge you.
>>
The young cat you had been introduced to earlier, Haset, right alongside the aged captain as the two converse in the guttural trade tongue. They are joined by no less than a dozen other assorted cats and Frost crewman, and all seem quite busy.

Setting your huge axe against the table as you finally reach the gathered group, you immediately reach down and snatch up a mug of some proper Frost drink and quickly down the invigorating brew. Much to the disdain of Balad as the rabbit frowns and shakes her head.

“Ach,” Grindstone finally looks up before turning his head to spit onto the sandy stone road, “Finally awake, Vetr?”

You're quickly filled in on the happenings of the city that had taken place while you had slumbered. Already the Frost crews have stocked the ships in case of an emergency departure. There had been no further resistance from the cats whatsoever and the looting of the great FAT vaults and temple ruins had yielded up much.

“Gold and gems, all good and well.” Grindstone shrugs, “I'm more of a mind to use this new wealth to secure our hold here. It's the fields along this great river that are my true concern.”

You listen as the plans are briefly laid out for you. The rebuilding, the setting up of a new and friendly cat power structure, the discussion of routes to bring this new found wealth of grain back to the Frost lands.

“We'll need to build ships, more than we have. Cargo vessels still capable of our previous passage. For that we'll need these looted coffers and time. Time to get the materials, time to teach the cat shipwrights, time to build...” Grindstone seems less and less enthused with the thought of all that himself as the old man drinks heavily from his own stock.

“And I don't suppose you'll be wanting to take up a chisel and hammer, eh, Vetr?” He spits, smirks, and shakes his head.

“I'd just get in the way.”
>>
“Ach, that you might. Still set on some foolhardy trip, eh?”

Glancing down at the small fox beside you before you answer, you grip Avael by the top of the head and tussle her hair roughly and much to her protest.

“Yeah. I'll put in some real work while you all laze around here.”

You mull over your options as to how you plan on visiting this supposed Hall that Avael swears she is the top student of.

[ ] By Frost ship. You can man one of the smallest on your own well enough and it will be the fastest route, though likely the least safe.

[ ] By land. Take in the sights, keep a low profile, take the roadway north through the desert.

[ ] By cat craft up the river Lnie. Slow, plodding, and winding about the vital and expansive waters.

“I plan on going by land, it seems the easiest way to remain low key and the best way to learn more about these lands as I travel. I could chance the open sea but that seems an unnecessary risk, considering the time things will take here. The river would be my second choice, but it would make for slow going.” You speak even as you pull a large map closer to yourself and point out the route you plan on taking.

Haset seems a bit hesitant as he speaks up, but the young cat man finally makes his concerns known.

“North of here? To the north are only savage, barbaric lands. It is a large risk, Great O... Vetr...” The cat quickly corrects himself.

“Ah, is it?” You let out a wry smile, “Perfect, then. Just the way I like things.”

“W-well surely we can see you out in a grand departure. I shall prepare a palisade and a caravan to...”

You quickly cut off Haset and shake your head.

“I don't need nor want any of that. Would only slow me down. All I'll need is a mount for myself and...” You look back to the three behind you, Balad especially.

The rabbit girl notices your stare and shrugs, large mace resting easily across her shoulders.

“It isn't like I have anything better to do. Might be fun.”

“Three others. With fodder and supplies to spare. And enough for whatever passes as common currency that I don't find myself left wanting for anything.” You sum up your needs and Haset quickly departs to fulfill them.

You spend a short time with Grindstone as you listen to the old captain talk, but you don't sit easily. Whether or not you are part of the crew, or Vetr, or merely a man, you are not one to simply rest idly. The very thought of leaving for new sights and lands unknown all you can think on.

Thus by the time Haset and a dozen other cats return, you are well and ready to depart.

Though what he returns with gives you a slightly cautious sensation.

“What are these?” You gawk as one of the large beasts is brought before you, its toothed green jaw opening and snapping shut anxiously.

“Sun-claws.” Khepri says fondly as she steps past you and reaches up to brush at the huge scaled beast's head. The lizard lets out a shrill cry and nuzzles itself against her touch even as it chews against the bit in its mouth.

You almost ask if they've anything less foreign. Maybe a horse, a mule, anything. Some Frosts even take great elk and moose as mounts, but you somehow doubt they have such here.

When what must be your own mount is brought before you, you find yourself at a bit of a loss. The huge creature stands upright on two powerful legs with a massive hooked claw set atop each foot. Its slitted jade eye watches you even as you cautiously reach out a hand toward its neck. Though you quickly draw the arm back as the beast moves as though to snap at it with a row of razor sharp white teeth.

“I think he likes you.” Balad giggles as she easily hops up into one of the leather saddles and coos some foreign words at the mount beneath her. Her own seemingly taking a quick liking to her as it shrieks and writhes its long neck as she scratches at it.

Looking toward Grindstone, the old captain only offers a tight lipped shake of his head.

Not about to be shown up by a bunch of girls, you take the reigns from the cat who offers them, and tug the beast's head down to your eye level.

“You bite me,” You tell the creature as it stares, “and I'll be having lizard shanks done up over coals for dinner. Got it?”

The tanned scaled beast snorts in response, a blast of hot air from twin nostrils against your face.

“This is what your people ride?” You grimace up at Khepri, already sitting easily atop her own mount, “Why hadn't we seen any before?”
>>
“Ah, well sort of. These are desert mounts, mostly. Hearty but not very popular outside of the dunes. As for their use in war...” She trails off and sets a hand atop her own beast's quill feathered head.

“They're a bit... Excitable to use for war.” She finishes.

As though in response, the four scaled beasts each let out another piercing cry. Balad's moves to snap at Khepri's before the rabbit pulls its head back with a few of what you guess are rabbit words.

Your own mount is a good head taller than the others, you note even as you push a foot into a stirrup and heave yourself up onto the back of the beast. It shifts beneath you as it adjusts to your weight, and once atop it you feel slightly crowded with all of the baggage about you.

“Not exactly what I had expected, but it will have to do.” You share a knowing look with Grindstone who seems no more at ease with these foreign beasts than you.

“Avael, are you ready to...”

“Mhph?” The fennec looks over, a large haunch of meat clamped in her teeth as she lets her own mount gnaw against a similar feast as she holds the bone.

Leaning just enough off of your Sun-claw to tap on Haset's shoulder, you nod your head over in the direction of your captive fox.

“You sure you loaded these things up with enough food?”

“I am sure, Gre... Vetr. You will find the supplies ample, trust in me.” The young cat nods.

“And these things?” You prod your own mount in the back of the head and it turns to look at you.

“Let them loose at night if you've not enough fodder for them. They are excellent hunters. By dawn they'll have returned to you.”

You nod at his words but at the same time think sleeping impossible with the four of these things running around unsaddled.
>>
Taking the reigns in your left hand, you give them a try and find the beast surprisingly responsive to the leathers. Along with the stirrups against its side, they aren't so different from anything you've ridden before, you suppose.

“No time like the present, Vetr?” Grindstone appears a bit amused at you as you control the beast around the area a bit.

“You know me too well. You know the direction I'm heading if you need me.”

Before you can kick your beast northward, Grindstone stops you with a shout and you manage to catch the large leather sack he tosses toward you.

“A bit extra insurance.” He adds with the throw.

You heft the bulging bag in your hand, feeling the telltale weight of gold and hearing the clink of gems.

“I'll bring you back a cask of whatever I think best suits your tastes.” You grunt, securing the bag to one of the leather straps about the beast, before giving it a kick in the side.

While you aren't exactly shocked at the swiftness the creature lurches to a run, you quickly find it faster than any horse or mule you'd seen before. Atop its heavy muscled legs, the Sun-claw quickly starts to weave its way through the sand rock city streets and soon enough you see the huge gate northward, open and waiting.

You only glance back once to make sure that the three are following you, only to see that their own mounts are only a short distance behind your own as each runs hard. The Sun-claws shriek loudly once they pass through the gate and into the open dunes beyond. Even when you ease yours off the road, you find it hardly slows atop the sand.

Khepri had filled you in during your wait for Haset. Giving you insight as to which routes you might pursue. If you were to hang to the west, hugging the coast there, you would come across the spider lands. The fierce warriors there in high castles of web hung against huge canopied forests.
>>
Were you to journey through the center of the land, you would encounter the immense Stone mountains and be funneled through the passage there. A favorable trade route for speed, though one often harried by bands of roving centaurs.

To the eastern edge of the continent, against the alien sea there that is said to run red on every tide of the full moon, are a secretive people of scaled, fire-breathing sort. Residing only in the highest of Stone mountains and quite unknown even to Khepri.

Once outside the gates and well into the desert beyond, you look at the sun and adjust your course due northeast. You see little need to discuss your plans with the others, as you've already made up your mind. Having already met and killed centaurs, and having little interest in high webbed strongholds you've little hope of penetrating, you head toward the unknown.

Khepri had only briefly described what she had known about the peoples to the east, which to the cats was little and less. Few journeyed so far toward that coast, and of those who had, few ever returned.

She had told you stories of great beasts gliding atop leathery wings, scales of all color glistening in the sunlight as they flew overhead. Folklore of huge mountain holds steeped high with treasures unimaginable.

Though you yourself had your doubts about any such things, you had found your curiosity sparked. If there was little known about those lands, you might establish your name as the first to explore them.

The Sun-claws underneath your party prove almost tireless runners, even in the heat of the desert so intense you quickly are stripped down to naught but boots and trousers. Thankfully your time at sea having darkened your skin enough to protect you from the worst of the sunlight overhead.

“Are you sure about this?” Khepri asks as she comes alongside you, “I did tell you this would be quite dangerous...”

You look over at the cat and smirk.

“And here I thought you were some fearless warrior shadow. Scaredycat?”

Khepri frowns.

“Relax,” You shake your head at her obvious concerns, “We're headed this way because it sounds dangerous and new. Otherwise what would be the fun?”

Spurring your own mount faster, the Sun-claw picks up the pace even further as it bounds across the burning, barren white sands.
>>
Several hours into riding you finally relent upon seeing a small stream, and allow time for your beasts to rest and splash into the cool waters as the four crash and snarl against each other.

Avael and Balad each kick about in the water and relax in the sand. Khepri joining them when they finally lie down, though avoiding the stream entirely except to fill a large corked gourd.

On the second leg of your journey, you finally relent and accept that the heat is a bit much. Drawing your own powers up, you manage to cool the area around your small party enough to be almost sinfully comfortable. Even Khepri, quite used to the desert according to her own words, seems quite content with the chilled breeze.

The fast pace continues until you're well into the rocky foothills set before mountains that might even perhaps rival those of your home. Though these are of more rocky make, without the heavy forests and blanketing white of the Snowlands.

It is there that you first make camp, spending an almost restless night as you listen to the far off shrieks of your mounts as they hunt. Not that you had intended to let them away, but Avael had apparently not done a thorough job of securing them to a long iron spike you had driven into the earth.

Thankfully, at the crack of dawn, the Sun-claws did indeed return. Though now spattered with dried blood and remains of some unknown creature.

You had been sleeping lightly when your own mount had unceremoniously dropped a large and tattered haunch of something into your lap. Its shredded meat and stringy sinew hardly at all appetizing with the numerous tooth marks and glistening lizard drool.

“Thanks...” You grimace as you pluck the bloody stump up and hold it back toward the beast, “But I'm full. You have it.”
>>
The next leg of your journey sees you climbing higher and higher into ever larger hills. Until said hills give way to the rocky mountains that you wind your mount around and up. Finding no actual trails save those made by some shaggy species of goat that the Sun-claws always seem to want to chase as they leap easily up the stones above.

If any of you had expected the path to become easier, you find yourselves sorely mistaken. Even the Sun-claws seem to struggle for purchase at times, clawing at the hard stone or nearly stumbling against loose gravel.

“This such bad idea!” Avael voices her annoyance as her own beast slides precariously close to slipping off the mountainside.

“Oh relax, fluffy tail. This is exactly what I was aft...”

Whoomp!

The jet of flame scorches the side of the mountain to your left as black as coal in an instant. Your Sun-claw recoiling at the sudden heat and light and nearly toppling over backwards.

As you struggle to maintain control, you turn your eyes upward and barely catch a glimpse of large crimson wings as they beat hard above you as the creature goes soaring by overhead. Where it had come from you aren't sure, but you also know that there is basically no place to hide.

“Intruders!” Booms a voice that despite everything, you can tell is a bit of a false front.

“These mountains are forbidden to travelers! Turn back now, or face oblivion!” The same voice echos against the mountainsides in such a way that you can't pinpoint its origin, the flapping leathery wings well out of sight now, hidden by the twisting peaks.

“That's all well and good!” You shout in response, drawing the reigns tight to keep your beast in check, “But I am Vetr, son of winter! And I demand to know who it is I am speaking to!”

Though even as you speak, you pull Khepri aside and lean in to whisper to her.

“Find out where they are speaking from.”

The cat nods and quickly leaps from the back of the Sun-claw before disappearing into the shadow against the side of the mountain.

“You have the honor of speaking to the Falis, guardian of this mountain! And my demands remain unchanged! Leave now, or face certain doom!”

You almost reply before you glimpse the arm of Khepri as it waves at you from a rocky summit.

“Master!” She hisses, “Over here!”

Sliding from your own saddle and quickly lashing your Sun-claw to a large just of stone, you quickly and quietly make your way up the slick side of the rock toward where Khepri remains mostly hidden in the shadow.

Once alongside the cat, she gestures you to take a look, and cautiously you poke your head out and above the rock.

Below is a hollowed out expanse in the very peak of the mountain itself. Not that large, though not small. Crowded with all manner of tarnished pewter ornaments and scraps of faded cloth strung taut over cracked and worn boards.

At the center of it all, you see the girl.

Tall and thin, with those huge crimson wings a match to the hair that hangs loose to her waist. Her forearms large and scaled in a burnished red that compliments her similarly colored armor. A single long curved sword hangs at her left side, and a large horn is clutched in both of her clawed hands.

“This will be your final warning, trespassers! Leave now, or be consumed in hellfire! You are encroaching upon the great mountain hold of Falis, and if you remain I will take it as an attempt at thievery!”

You watch as the girl bellows into the horn, which amplifies her voice several times over as it rings across the mountains.
>>
Great mountain hold? Thievery?

Squinting, you just can't see it. Though her armor appears heavy and strong indeed, it is hardly ornate in the least. If anything, you would call it second hand and utilitarian. Even the paint adorning it appears old and chipped.

Looking about the so called hold, you don't spot any passages into the mountain itself, and certainly no great piles of wealth that one might expect in a hold. In fact, from what you can discern, there isn't so much as a gold coin to be seen.

The buildings, if you could even call them that, resemble the hovels of homeless or destitute Frosts. Obviously constructed out of whatever had been at hand, and by someone with little knowledge about structure integrity.

“Yoouuu lookkk pooooooorrrrr!” You yodel with a cupped hand, directing your voice to the right.

The girl recoils as though struck, gazing outward from the front of her mountain as if you had actually hit her. Several times she lifts the horn to her lips, before lowering it again, as if uncertain of how to reply.

“I-I'm Falis! Guardian of this mountain! I have wealth unlike any your peasant eyes have ever laid eyes upon! No-now turn back or face the flames of retribution!”

“Poooooorrrr!” you continue, “Not even a scrap of gooooolllddddd!”

The girl who calls herself Falis shrinks back from the echos, clamping her hands over her ears, just below the twisting black horns atop her head as she shakes it as though to dislodge your words from her mind.

“I-I'm not poor!” She shrieks, “Really I'm not!”

“So pooooorrrr she can't even afford underweaarrrr!” You continue to yodel, voice reverberating across the stone mountainsides.

“I... I can too!” She balls her hands in fury and stamps a clawed foot even as she screams the reply through the horn.

“What colooorrrr!?”

“Lace black! W-wait...”

“Noice!” You exclaim, having already vaulted over the top of the mountain and started to slide down the loose gravel, your leather boots scraping against the stones.

The girl whips around to watch as you finally skid to a stop at the bottom of the hollowed out area, having used your axe to balance and stay upright.

“Wahwahwah!” Khepri startles from above you, clearly in a panic, having not expected you to be so reckless. You really had thought she knew you better by now.

At the level flooring of rock now, you take a moment to reach down and dust the gray off of your boots, before reaching over to grab up a pewter bowl which you lift to examine.

“Ah yeah, I can see the wealth now. Clearly some master worked pewter, here. I'm sure that this is worth a true fortune in itself.” You shake the bowl and nod approvingly.

“That! That's...!” Falis starts a rebuttal, before stopping and turning her head away as she folds her arms.

“Obviously I don't just keep my vast, untold riches out here in the open, you know? Wh-what you're seeing now is just a fraction of...”

Calculatingly, you release your hold on the pewter bowl, letting it fall back down toward the hard stone beneath.

As if her very life depended on the catch, the winged girl leaps quickly, long arms outstretched and clawed hands upturned. Only barely managing to secure the bowl before it slammed into the rock. Her own armor screeches as she slides to a stop, still holding the bowl secure in her claws.

“Hahhh...” She lets out a long sigh of relief.

“Ah!” The girl exclaims upon realizing what had just transpired as she sees your bemused expression as you smirk down at her, lying there on her stomach as she still holds the bowl.

“I-I'll burn you where you stand!” She warns. Though from her current position, the threat hardly comes off as dangerous.

“Right, right. See, this is probably part of why you're such a pauper. Rather than just scare off anyone trying to get through these mountains, wouldn't you be better off to try to exact a toll? A gold piece for every passer?”

“A... A gold piece?” She asks up at you in bewilderment.

“A gold piece.” You acknowledge as you produce a simple cast coin of shimmering gold and spin it between your fingers. The girl watches with wide, awe-struck eyes as the coin flits from knuckle to knuckle.

“The-then you'll give me gold if I allow you through?” She asks hesitantly as she pushes herself off the ground to sit on her backside, her long tail moving across the stone ground as she does.

“Now? Only four pieces? Well I suppose I could...” You shrug and produce three more pieces, rubbing them together in your hand. With each soft clink of gold against gold, the girl's eyes only grow more starry as her mouth gapes open slightly.

“I mean, you are the guardian of this mountain, right? That much at least is your due...” You continue as you slide each piece into your sword belt at your waist, until each is halfway hidden by the leather, “All you have to do is reach out and take them...”

Falis's clawed hand is nearly at your waist before you stop her.

“Or. OR...!” You secure the last piece, pushing it until you feel it against your skin.

“You could come along with me and mine as a... Guide. And instead of just these four paltry coins, you could end up with, say, a mountain? Something worthy of such a great...” You stop, twisting your mouth.

“What exactly are you?”

“M...Me?” She looks uncertainly between your face but lowers her gaze right back to the gold secured at your belt.

“I'm... I'm...” Falis glances around as if lost, until her face turns crestfallen to the stone beneath her.

“I am... I was... The last Dragon princess.” She finishes.

“Princess?!” Avael gawks with obvious if surprising interest, but you ignore her for now as you lower yourself down to Falis's level.

You gaze around to the obvious poverty, before looking back toward the dragon, her eyes still downcast and her long hair draped over a shoulder onto the dirty stone below her.

“A princess, you said? Forgive me if I seem a bit forward, but you don't much look like any princess I've ever seen.”

Avael lets out a small “snerk” at that.

“You don't have to believe me, but I was. My father had such a vast horde that you could stand on one end of his cave and barely see to the other side. All that shimmering gold, the jewels...” She trails off, leaving you in an awkward silence.

I think the real reason is because if they had parents Vetr would eventually have to meet them.

>>
You're aware that Avael, Khepri, and Balad are behind you now, but you choose to ignore them for the time being.

“Surely such a wealth couldn't simply be lost to time, no?”

“No. It wasn't lost...” Falis replies without lifting her gaze, “It was stolen. Carried off by the coal hides years ago after they took the mountain. And the king, the queen, all of them...” The tears falling to the stone finish that for her.

The dragon raises one scaled forearm to wipe at her face before lifting her eyes of orange, furious fire upward to look at you.

“They tried to take me instead of kill me, like they had the others. I was young, but I fought them off and managed to fly my way south until I came here. And this...” She gestures about the small area, “This is all I have now.”

“And these coal hides? I'm not from these lands, I don't know of such.”

Falis quickly brushes the last wet drop from an eye as she rises to stand, letting out a deep breath and turning her head away from you as though embarrassed to show such a weak front to such as you.

“No one really knows where they came from. The farthest north that north goes, some said. They look like the pinks, only larger, and meaner, and tougher. With long wicked spears they...” She bits her lip and turns her back toward you entirely.

>>
“Any of you three ever heard of these coal hides?” You turn back and ask.

“Only what I was told of them, master. To duck aside their spears, to cut at their exposed necks. Their armor is thick, I have heard.” Khepri puts a finger to her lip and relays all she knows.

“Avael know nothing.” The fennec adds, oddly quiet now.

“The black ones? Yeah, sure. I fought a small band of 'em when I was younger. Seemed like they had searched us out specifically. They ignored the charge we had been protecting at the time. Might have been tough, but my mother called forth the Great Wind and smashed their corpses into the dirt until they were just jelly inside their armor.” Balad nods.

“The great... She wasn't around when we took the city, was she?” You gawk.

“Eh? Nah. She left some years ago on a spirit journey. She's a shaman, same as me.” Balad raises an eyebrow at you.

You size up the bunny as if seeing her in a new light.

“Can you cook up this Great Wind or whatever?”

“Eh, me? Dunno, never tried.” The rabbit shrugs.

“Right... Well, Falis, I can't promise much. I'm not headed to the far north, I'm not here to crush armies. For now, anyways. But I can say that any of these coal hides we come across, we can thrash until they speak our names in terror while they huddle around their cookfires. It may not be the justice you want right now, but it has to be better than wasting away in these mountains.” You turn back to the dragon, who only glances at you between her shoulder and huge wing.

She nearly starts as you take one of her clawed hands, but stops when she feels you press something into her palm. The dragon raises her closed fist to her eyes, revealing the gold coin there, and closes her hand around it.
>>
>>39517421
>my mother
Well we know at least One parent is possibly alive.
>>
“There will be more gold?” The dragon asks, clearly still a bit hesitant.

“Gold? Sure. If things keep up the way they have been, there will be gold aplenty. Enough for you to start filling that cave back up.”

Falis looks around her rather destitute hovel. From the small mounds of pewter and copper nicknacks and cookware, to the shabby wooden structure that you surmise she must have been sleeping in. Then back down to the gold coin clutched in her palm.

“Where is it you are headed?” She asks, finally turning back to face you.

“For now? The damnable hall that this one won't shut up about.” You push Avael forward with a squeak from the small fox.

“Apparently I can turn into some sort of ice giant. But I shouldn't, or so she says. Truth be told, I'm just exploring.” You put on an easy smile.

While you give the dragon a bit of time to gather up anything she might need, you see that it isn't much. A small bag and a tattered bedroll that she straps about her back, which seems quite a chore with her massive red wings.

“I'd offer you a mount, but I'm afraid we don't have any to spare. And, no offense, but I doubt you'd fit behind me on this saddle.” You remark as you lift yourself back onto the Sun-claw which has been busily chewing at the tattered remains of some small black-haired critter.

“No need. My people do not ride.” She expresses that point by quickly extending out her huge wings and giving them a light flap.

Ripping the remainder of the creature from your Sun-claw's mouth to get the beast to focus on moving, you toss the carcass down the mountainside. If your mount cared, it doesn't make a point to share that sentiment.

“And about your people, should we expect to meet more of them along the way, or...?”

Falis frowns at your question, but shakes her head.
>>
>>39517801
>And about your people, should we expect to meet more of them along the way, or...?”
>Falis frowns at your question, but shakes her head.

Aww.. papa I didn't come here for feels...

Sure we can fix that predicament of no others though.
>>
“It would be best for us to avoid such confrontations. With the kingdom shattered, the remnants are a territorial bunch. I'll lead you eastward where we can meet up with a trade road that circles around to Highvaults. You'll be able to find a ferry to the Hall from there.” With that, Falis gives her great wings a few flaps and quickly soars into the sky above.

True to her word, you're winding down a mountain and staring off into the sunset beyond, over a great sea of grass, without so much as catching a whiff of another dragon. Up above, Falis soars easily on the wind, her wings rising and falling slowly in the warm air.

You had nearly gotten to setting about a small camp atop a small rise, before Avael had shouted her pleasure upon seeing what even you recognize as an inn. Or perhaps what would better be described as the remains of an inn.

Upon drawing close enough, the little fennec voices her dismay at the sorry state of the stone building. Its walls crumbled, obviously long abandoned.

Nevertheless, the remaining structure would provide enough shelter, you suppose. The sky showing no signs of rain and the night air still plenty warm enough.

Falis had volunteered herself to find firewood, and despite your insistence that you would do it yourself, she returns a short while later with a heavy armful of light dry wood. Avael manages to spark the flames before the dragon can breathe her own flames, which Falis seems to find mildly amusing.

True to his word, Haset has ensured that your packs had been full to the brim of supplies. Even Avael's hearty appetite doesn't seem to make too great a dent into the dense, hearty sweet bread that made up most of your rations. While it isn't quite to your tastes, you allow yourself a few flat pieces, but find your interests more enraptured by the large capped winesacks.

Snagging a full one entirely, you lounge near the fire and drink deeply.
>>
You nearly offer the sack to Balad, seated just beside you, before you stop to watch her curiously.

The bunny has produced a long pipe of sorts, and using a small ember from the crackling fire, has sparked whatever it is she has packed inside. Drawing a long, deep breath, she exhales in a long stream of glittering violet that swirls about despite the still air.

Balad takes several more long draws before she catches you staring.

“Never seen a pipe before?” She asks with a bit of bemusement in her tone.

“A pipe? Sure. Purple smoke like that? Nah.”

“No? Than this is too high quality for you.” She smirks and turns back to watch another plume of violet.

While you nearly interject, you're stopped as Falis exclaims in a somewhat awe-struck tone after taking a swig from one of the many skins that aren't water.

“Is this... Flamewater? I've never had such before, I whas thoo youngsh...” The dragon marvels at the skin in her hand.

Did a bit of research 'bout lizards and alcohol. Might not be directly equivalent, but komodo dragons are lizards so that's the best you'll get out of me. Anyway:

>Okay. So you have a monitor or snake or some such thing clamped to your arm or hand. How do you convince them that you aren't on the menu? Pour a few drops of vinegar into their mouths. Alcohol (the drinking kind, not the rubbing kind) works best, but may not be legal to keep in your classroom. You should first turn the reptile so that it is facing the floor so that the fluid does not run into their glottis, the opening into their lung.

This'll be interesting.

While a small voice in the back of your mind advises caution, you ignore that little voice. Either because you haven't learned anything thus far, or because it never has any fun ideas.

“Come on, up, up, up!” You chide the dragon, reaching out and tilting the skin up in her hands. Her eyes widen as she continues to drink, a red trail leaking out of her mouth as she can't quite keep up with the flow.

You've already got Khepri far past the point of her stopping you now, as the red faced cat sprawls out in a long stretch on the sandy brick floor. Balad doesn't seem willing to stop you either, as she only lounges back more and more, her eyes becoming half-lidded and dreamy.

If Avael were going to voice any concerns, those thoughts are quite far from her prerogative at the moment, as she continues to sink her teeth through the food in front of her.

Thus, unable or unwilling to stop yourself, you push the dragon through more and more as she struggles to keep up with your own pace.

“Puhaa...” She exhales after a particularly long gulping session. Her eyes a bit foggy and distant.

At least, right up until they lock on the front of your sword belt.

“All right all right all right...” You grin, rubbing your palms together. Scaly tail here you come.

“G-ghold. Ghold!” Falis exclaims, her eyes widening at the sight of the coins still there.

“Eh?” You glance down, “Oh, yeah. But what's under there is more inter...mph!?”

Before you can finish, you're tackled to the ground violently and suddenly. Even your own rather impressive strength caught off guard enough until you're back down against the sand, laughing as the dragon paws clumsily at your belt.

“Hey now!” You laugh, pushing her away lightly, “No need to get so greedy... Now?”

Falis has swung herself around until her back faces you, and before you can protest, has sunk herself down to pin you to the ground. You shout in wordless exclamation as her armored skirt sinks into the sand around you and your face is suddenly engulfed in soft yet powerful flesh.

When you tap at her side, she only presses her rear down harder as her thick tail winds itself around your neck and upper torso.

“Itsh ghold!” You hear her exclaim despite your ears being quite muffled now, and feel her thick claws tugging against your belt.

Reaching up and grabbing the dragon roughly by the hips, you attempt to pry her off of you which proves a rather fruitless endevor.

“Siiiht shtill!” Falis grumbles as she presses down harder, grinding thin cloth against your head. Your only real protest is that in such close proximity, you can't actually tell if they are black lace or not.

You feel your sword belt finally give way as she manages to undo the clasps and just as quickly as she had tackled you, Falis is airborne and sailing gracefully on great red wings. Right until her clawed foot snags a low wall and sends her flipping end over and until she crashes down in an explosion of sand and flailing scaly appendages.

>>
When you at last pry yourself off of the floor to go and have a look, you find the dragon girl well asleep and snoring rather loudly, with a small burst of fire on each exhale. Careful to avoid the flames, you do your best to scoop her up under the arms and carry her back to the relative safety of the campfire.

Even when you finally ease her down, her clawed fists remain balled tight about the gold coins she had snagged from your belt.

Balad just watches you with amusement while Avael seems quite less impressed by your antics.

“What's wrong, want to sit on my face, too?” You leer at the fox, who draws back and raises a slice of bread to her mouth.

Crashing down beside Balad again, you take a few more swigs of the sour cat wine, lay your head back, and promptly fall into a deep sleep.

You aren't sure what time it is when something nudges you in the side, but you can somehow tell it is still dark out.

Another nudge to your side.

“C'mon, Khepri. If you want another go at frosty down there, all you have to do is...” You open your eyes and see that it is NOT your shadow cat.

“Ask...” You finish, looking up carefully at the pink orc hovering over you with a stone axe clutched in its meaty fists.

“How did you...” You marvel, looking quickly around. Two dozen? Three? How did they come upon you so quickly.

Though when you spot the plastered and sleeping Khepri, the devastated dragon, a snoozing Avael with a piece of bread still in her mouth, and Balad snoozing so close to you that her long braid lays across your neck...

“Really, nobody stood guard?” You groan.

You kick at the forearms of the pink orc as it attempts to swing down its crude axe, and manage to dislodge the weapon. Spinning up to your feet, you pull your twin axes from your back at the same time and bury the both of them in the chest of the pink orc who had been standing above you. The piggish creature grunts once before collapsing to the ground.

“Mmm... Don't tickle that place...” Balad moans in her sleep as she turns over.

She doesn't even wake up as you snag your great axe in one whirling motion and cleave right through the torso of another charging orc. This one spattering you and the rabbit both in a shower of blood.

Several of the creatures standing a good distance away let loose a volley of slow arrows which you intercept with a quick wall of ice, glad now Haset had loaded your bags so full of water jugs.

Rolling across the sand back to the corpse of the first pink, you rip your twin throwing axes back out and the next moment, send each of them ripping out in spinning arcs. Two of the bowmen go down with an axe to the head, and the others all dive for cover not knowing you've only two of the throwing blades.

Well enough for you, you think as you turn and draw the sword at your belt to sink it through the neck of another orc as it attempts to skewer you with a crudely fashioned wooden spear.

Time for pink orc beat down.
>>
If there's one thing you know, it's that there is absolutely nothing like the shrill screaming sound of metal grinding against metal to wake up to when you're horribly, terribly drunk.

To demonstrate that point to these newcomers, you press the sword and your your heavy axe against each other and putting all your strength into it, slide the blades against one another. The grating, cringing noise is enough to drive you half mad, and you're not even drunk.

Khepri is the first on her feet, having leapt some ten feet into the air at the noise, and coming down with a long dagger in each hand. Each of the wicked black blades sinking into a pink orc where the neck meets the torso.

“What was that?!” The catgirl shouts in alarm, “What's going on!?”

Only the next moment does she seem to realize she's already slain two of the attackers, and quickly rips her blades back out of the slumped bodies.

Balad had quickly opened one eye at the noise, and the next had risen in an almost graceful spin before slamming her heavy mace head into the nearest orc. With a sickening crunch, the front of the creature is caved in and the pink is thrown back from the impact.

If you had thought the din enough to rouse Falis, you are quite mistaken. Instead, the dragon girl simply rolls over and covers herself with her large wings.

Avael sits up in an obvious stupor as she looks about. To you as you cleave an orc from neck to knee. To Khepri as she slices into an orc, spilling a mess of green and gray organs to the sand below. To Balad who crushes the skull of one pink with her mace, before caving in the face of another with an absurdly powerful kick.

For a moment it appears the fox isn't going to act. Until one pink orc makes the fatal mistake of grabbing her roughly about the torso.

His primal screams echo across the ruined walls as a fire engulfs him entirely, his fat three fingered hands batting helplessly as the blue flames consume his flesh.
>>
Avael remains standing and raises an arm toward a large group gathered just at the far edge of the building, seemingly uncertain as to what action to take against this stiff resistance.

Their decision is made abruptly for them as a jet of magic flame rips through the night, the whipping tendrils of fire engulfing them and drowning out their panicked cries.

The fox, disturbed from her rest, shows no mercy as she turns her power on a group now attempting to flee.

While you had seen her magic before, it had never been quite like this. Whatever pink orcs she spots are cut down mercilessly by the torrent of swirling blue fire.

One of the orcs charges from behind her, nearly reaching the small fox before a pillar of oozing magma erupts from the ground, and the assailant finds himself unable to stop in time. You watch him go down, clawing worthlessly against the melted rock for only a moment.

While you, Balad, and Khepri had dispatched quite a few yourselves, Avael seemingly cleans house out in the open like this. Even the shadow cat lowers her blades to just watch as the last of the orcs go down to the magical fire.

“Guh...” The fennec protests as her stomach growls, “Not good wake up.”

I hate to call it there for the night but I'm still pretty wiped out from the last few days. Work and the like. I should have a bit more time heading into early May which is good, but toward the end of May I'll be headed down to the keys for a bit of fishing with a long time friend and mentor.
