So... You want to see a sockpuppet show, eh? One about corporate espionage, cybercrime, and philosophy?

Wellllll... I have some time.

Meridian. A world not unlike Terra, er Earth, in the 22nd century. Still recovering from the aftermath of several World Wars, the planet’s countries became balkanized. The ensuing power vacuum made it easy for multinational corporations to gain power on the global scale. Only a few nation-states survived with their sovereignty wholly intact. And even those felt the ever-increasing weight of the corps as time went on.

As most of these types of stories go, you can probably guess what happened to society in all this. Divisions between “Haves” and “Have nots” increased, especially given advancements in technology. The civilized world as a whole became cyberpunk sprawls. All while the true elites and powers behind the curtains raced to secure their future in the stars above.

Which is where our protagonist comes into play: a young man who’s barely scraping by. His wage-slave job keeps the lights on but isn’t enough to pay for much else. There’s no hope of advancement up the corporate ladder without becoming a cyborg or cyberized, yet such procedures are so costly or tangled up in corporate contracts that he has no chance of obtaining either. Not unless he resorts to selling his soul (in more ways than one) or consulting with the shadows of society.

So come! Make yourself comfortable. And if a very large red daemon comes barging in I suggest scooting over on the couch.

With that OP out of the way, welcome to Shadows in the Shell (SitS) Quest. Yes it’s fucking horrible but it’s stuck in my head now.

You’ve probably guessed this is some sort of Shadowrun, Ghost in the Shell, MGR hybrid homebrew type deal. And you’d be right. The technology will largely pull from GiTS, while themes will come from all three. This should give us a wide variety of topics and characters to explore without the constant worry of “is that canon?”

For SitS I plan on using a simplified, rules-light Traveller system. So while there will be stats behind the scenes they won’t be the massive clusterfuck that was Black Crusade in KQ. Mostly because 99% of all checks boil down to the following:

> Roll 2d6 and add modifiers. If you get above 8, you pass.

That’s it. Pretty simple. For you math die-hards out there I’ve even attached a chart or two that should make you gush. Either way I’m learning and adapting the system on the fly to suit our needs. Keep me honest and all that jazz and we should have a good time.

But before we get too much into all that, let’s start to gen up our protagonist. Traveller’s generation system is pretty neat in my opinion and should give us plenty characterization to start off with. After that we can cover some worldbuilding stuff and I’ll answer whatever questions you have as we go. Note that we won’t actually start playing today. Watch Twitter (@ELHmk1) for that date/time.

If it turns out to be a massive clutserfuck, though, I’ll generate it up myself on the side. But I have faith in /tg/ (Famous last words)

I’ll need seven (7) people to roll 2d6 for me. We’ll then take the highest six results and allocate them to the six characteristics. Yes this means I’m giving you one free reroll off the bat since the Dice Gods are fickle.

Dropping that 2 you have an array of:
5, 5, 3, 3, 10, and 5

Hm. Well then.

So you have six characteristics:
Strength - Fitness, etc. Pretty obvious.
Dexterity - Agility, Reflexes, Accuracy, etc. Also pretty obvious.
Endurance - HP, Stamina, Resilience, etc. A low score here would make you very vulnerable.
Intelligence - Generally how smart and quick on your feet you are. A test to solve a cipher, for example
Education - How well-read and experienced you are. Trivia, Knowledge checks, that sort of thing.
Social Standing - Where you are in society. Think of it like a simplified Charisma score but more material in nature.

Depending on the score you’ll get a modifier as well. That chart’s to the left.

So, how would you like to allocate them?

SS has it I think.

With that out of the way, here’s the sheet thus far:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rzrQLrCE99M_fOu_RDG9zz5pemWhc_DPqXNOIv9kOuc/edit?usp=sharing

Now we get into what I’d like to call the “Intern” phase of generation. Basically, what did the Protagonist do for the 5-8 years before his present dead-end job?

Each “internship” has its own requirements and set of benefits it can bestow. For ease-of-choice’s sake, I’m narrowing it down to these:
-Agent: Geared towards Law Enforcement, Intelligence, and Shadow Running
>[1] Requires Int 6+ (aka roll your Int and get above a 6)
-Military: Self-explanatory. Can be Support, Vehicle, or Infantry based
>[2] Requires End 5+
-Entertainer: Either be the news or report on it
>[3] Int 5+
-Nobility: Literally do nothing, but like a good bureaucrat would
>[4] Requires Soc 10+
-Rogue: Hang out with the seedier side of society
>[5] Requires Dex 6+
-Scholar: Researchers, Scientists, and Physicians
>[6] Requires Int 6+

Once we pick one we’ll roll and see if you get in. If you do we’ll go onto benefits proper. If you fail you’ll go into the drifter track which is essentially NEET life. Vote away!

This is also why generation is separate from the actual quest start. Lots of choices, lots of rolling. But once it's done we're good to go.
>>
>>39514371
Yeah, it's frustrating because a character controlled by an anonymous swarm of mostly-drunks will inevitably do stupid and unflattering things. If the QM lets them do it, then it's ooc and their "build" is nothing but words without substance. If they QM stops them, then people get mad about railroading.

Oh well, I'm sure it'll be fun.

Alright so overall your first 4 years go pretty well!

You end up picking up the tools of your trade and thusly get Deception (1), Recon, Gun Combat, Stealth, Streetwise, and Athletics!

Now comes the tricky part - your final couple years before that dead end desk job.

For this I'll need three 2d6 rolls.

Since we're still learning the notation together I'll explain. The first 1d6 in the sequence will be added up against an Int 6+ (in your case, 2 anon's d6 -1 has to be >= 6). The second 1d6 will be against Dec 6+ (2 anon's d6 +1 > 6)

Failing the first means bad juju, but the second one not so much. Roll away!
>>

Rolled 5, 3 = 8 (2d6)

>>39514943
>>
>>39514970
>>39514973
>>39514975

So for the first roll, we drop that 1 and are given 5+2-1 = 6. You barely live. Hooray!

For the second, 3+3+1 = 7 and thus you advance! Also Hooray!

While I deal with that let's handle what actually happens during that time frame. You end up involved in a feud between several rivaling gangs. For this I'll need you (3 anons) to roll another 1d6 (+1 from your dex) against a total of 8.

If you pass, you emerge on the other side wiser and possibly more connected. If you fail you'll get an injury which might explain why you now have a desk job.

Sooo let's say for the sake of argument you came out way worse for wear on the other side of this little spat between the two sides. So instead you end up landing a desk job that "just" pays for your housing and med bills.

There. It all works out now!

Last couple rolls (I think) and then I can worldbuild/etc. Maybe get into a little RP but nothing too major. We'll see.

Taking the highest of those so...

The first roll of a 6 means you get Gun Combat (1). Clearly the dice gods are laughing at your poor aim earlier.

The second roll of a 5 means you get a piece of armor to keep from your days in the streets. It's just cloth and isn't anywhere close to milspec but it's something at least!

With that we're done with the dice rolls for now. If you have any outstanding questions while I tidy up the sheet just shoot em out. After that's done I'll get to worldbuilding a little.
>>
>>39515391
Can we buy stat improvements/penalty removal from xp we gain or other means?
>>
>>39515423

There will be two ways to increase your stats:

Advancing in a career (You'll end up in one) or by becoming more metal (literally, not in the rock and roll sense). The former will happen naturally as part of the quest. The latter may also but doing it on your own is also possible if you have the creds for it.

One last thing. How soft or hard with injury/recovery/Hit Points/save from dieing are you in this system? drop to 0 and game over?
>>
So lets get a run-down of the way this quest will go.

Anons will start decently enough, playing to their strengths

Then they'll start to lose their minds

Next they will start playing the character like a randumb moron

Finally they will get killed by their own poor choices.

Or the dice will be nice, but I doubt that.

I challenge you /tg/! Don't fuck everything up completely!
>>
First let's go over the tech level of things. If you're familiar at all with Ghost in the Shell you've got a strong foundation. If you're not - basically there's several options when it comes to human advancement.

The first is actual cyborgization. Limbs, muscles, organs, etc can all be replaced with mechanical or synthetic ones. These are all very costly operations and thus are usually covered by a Corp, Gov't, or Military. But once you have something replaced it typically looks and functions like normal, if not better.

Of course there are multiple stages to this. Nanomachines to regulate your blood pressure, eyes capable of seeing infrared, limbs that can become weapons, you get the idea. The ultimate stage is a full body replacement. Your brain, new body. That typically goes hand in hand with cyberization which I'll speak to next.

Cyberization is the process by which your brain becomes mechanical. Stage 1 is like today's EEGs (or is it ECG?) - small layer of metal around the skull that lets you easily access the net and other such networks. Stage 2 is a full brain case - your grey matter into an actual metal shell. Stage 3 is all machine, with little to no organics left. Typically Stage 3 is a result of Stage 2 failing and not something people actively look for.

Basically this all means if you see someone who looks too perfect or is hopping around in a manner they shouldn't, they've got money and power behind them.

Now there is a caveat to all this. "Magic" DOES exist, but only to the elite of the elite. Yes chummer, there are Dragons even here. But only a handful of people even know they exist.

> small break for typing/questions

>>39515776

>>
>>39515815

That's actually my next talking point! That in a bit.

>>39515833
Hey if you find one, survive, and seduce it? Sure. But I don't plan on writing smut.

>>39515852
I'm going to say it generally enhances what's there, even if it's metal. So a cyborg dragon (a real one, not someone in a dragon metal shell) is basically the equivalent of a nuke in your face.

As for Cyberzombies, sorta. Like GitS, there's this whole philosophical debate on what makes someone a person. Is it their soul? Their body? Can you copy a cyberized brain and end up with the same person on the other side? What happens if they submerge too far into the Net? Basically, people who have become servitors (to borrow a 40k term) would fall in this category of being a cyberzombie.
>>
>>39515927
>Hey if you find one, survive, and seduce it? Sure. But I plan on writing smut.

As with all goals and landmarks in a Quest things change. So take this next bit with a grain of salt.

The super long term goal is to get off the planet. Right now you're stuck on Meridian. Only the upper echelons have access to the heavens and the riches that lay beyond. There's quite literally glittering palaces in the skies above where the rich are beginning their foray into the stars. If you manage to even get into orbit you know you've made it in the world. But to journey beyond into the unknown? You're one of the chosen few.

Tech-wise there's limited jump technology. To borrow from Star Trek for a moment you have basic superluminal speeds on the top-of-the-line ships. "Commercial" ones aren't nearly as fast but will easily get you around a system within a reasonable timeframe. Exploration outside of the Origin system is also limited. Who knows what's out there?

Since someone asked - there are indeed other colonies and bases out there. But they're so far out and again segmented from life on Meridian that normal average joe (see: You) only hears about the "Success of the Pioneers" on the news now and again.

I'd love for us to get to the point where you're zipping around with a waifu in your spaceship. But for now? I'd say focus on getting YOU better and getting the connections/etc you'll need to actually make it that far.

Of course you could just get the waifu and settle down too. Entirely up to you all really. But you gotta do *something* to get out of the rut you're in at the moment.

Are there other fantasy/shadowrun like races in this world setting? orcs, trolls, elves? are they playable options?
>>
>>39516121

As actual races? No. Are there people about with bio-engineered pointy ears? Yes. Hell there's even a few bio-centaurs running around if you know where to look. But all that is beyond a wage slave's means. It's all supposed to be a very dystopian "If you have money the world's yours and you can do and be whatever. But if you don't.... well sucks to be you! FILE MY TAXES!"

Can we learn a little more about the PC?
How old is he and all that jazz

Quiet, birdbrain, you don't get a vote. We're calling it Apparitions in the Aparatus and that's that.

Sure!

Mr. Weldon's about 26 years old. He started out life as most do on Meridian - you go through the educational system until you're 18 (High School level in the US) and then you're on your own. In his case that meant taking to the streets and surviving the best way he could without relying on his parents. Of course, given all the above in the thread, that backfired and landed him in a job that's essentially all the tedious sort of paperwork that can't be done by a machine.

To put it another way - this is the sort of job people with disabilities in today's world might get to keep them as "productive members of society." James there is in definite pain (leg, abdomen) every day and is just barely getting by with his payments for those medications. He more or less lives in a glorified closet. There's enough room for a bed, a single person shower with no elbow room, a tiny kitchen (see: one burner), and not much else. If you've ever see that one scifi image of a tube that connects to a larger spire, it's kinda like that.

As for Mr. Weldon's parents, I'd say they're around but not anyone he cares to interact with. Not out of bitterness or anything, he just doesn't. If I had to nail it down, though, it's because of pride. He wants to make his own way best he can without relying too heavily on handouts.

Anything else you'd like to know?

Your nest size.

How are you planning on doing combat?

Well, If he contacts them from time to time to let them know he's still alive and all, that's fine. Does he have any brothers or sisters?

As streamlined and as simple as I can really. An extended sort of chase scene will probably happen now and again when shit hits the fan. But extended stuff? Not so much. I learned my mistake from KQ (I think). Combat's not my strong suit, even when guns are involved. The more abstract and less stats/rolls are involved the better in my opinion.

Nope. Only child.

So two more big ticket items and then I'm done-ish for the night.

The first is your choice of "careers" on "tutorial island." Without giving too much away there are three potential (four if you include death) paths for you to take. Two should be obvious (Shadowrunning vs Selling out to "THE MAN") but the third I'll leave as a mystery for you to maybe find on your own. Once you're situated in one of them it'll be rather hard to switch, but I'll give you a chance to do so before leaving the island. To be clear - I'm not going to railroad you but you will have to pick a path at some point.

The second item is waifus. Let's be real /tg/ - you'll waifu anything. All I'm asking is that you don't let it get out of hand to the point where it slows down the quest. And yes, each of the three majors paths has at least one potential female love interest. Can you romance them all? No. Will I let you build a harem? No. Will I write smut? No.

Aside from that I'm content to call it a day and prepare for the actual session sometime either this weekend or next week. As I said above you'll want to watch twitter (@ELHmk1) or just the Twitter list in general for that time/day.

I'll also be around to answer more questions if you have them while the thread's still up. Thanks for sticking with me for this little pre-session, even though the dice gods are a shit. But hey! Characterization I can use now, so there's that.

Interesting enough. lets do this.

With those openning die rolls, I'm gonna feel right at home in this quest.

Someone save this thread. Just in case.

I've got an archive.moe link in the Gdoc I'm preparing already, but you're more than welcome to sup/tg/ it. Though I fear there's not really enough content here yet to warrant that. Up to you!

do it for completion sakes. Some may join later in the quest and, if they're like me, catch up from the beginning.
