You're not quite sure how the rest of the night went. The last thing you can remember is...straddling someone, you think? There was definitely some hate-straddling involved. Every part of you is aching, but not in that 'I-just-got-fucked' way, so you're sure you didn't have sex. There's this strange thumping in your temples, and your breath stinks of some of the strongest whiskey that has ever hit a woman's mouth. The bedsheets are too hot, the commons room is too damn quiet, and there's no immediate emergency that's forcing the Red Pack to get up. Well, that just means it's time for a bit of introspective self-collecting.

Your name is Flare Cuvic, mechanic and pilot for the Red Pack. There's a fucking competition that you're kicking ass in, but it's not like you have any choice in the matter. You've got people under you that don't speak your language, you're stuck on some poverty-planet with zealot gravvers, and your feet haven't stopped hurting since you first stepped foot on this mudfuck.

"Gods damn it, I need a drink."

One small consolation that you can get out of all this is that there really isn't an emergency that's calling for your attention. That's probably because it isn't even light outside yet, and any ne'er-do-wells who want to loot your asses blind aren't awake. Another small consolation for you is that the team has chosen to leave you alone, for the time being. After seeing that one-armed fuck - hell, after being forced to have him on your team!? You needed last night to happen. He's lucky that you're not going there to kill him, right now. He still has shit to pay for Skar being gone.

In any case, there's still time to go and do something. It might do you some good to clear your head out in the bathtub, or you could get a head-start on the next leg of the Games by looking up some information in the holoboard. Then again, Gaius is sleeping right now, and you've got two-and-a-half clips' worth of bullets that are just itching for some vengeance...

>Options?
>Take a bath and get this headache out of your head.
>Go over to the holoboard and start looking up information on the games. (Please roll 1d100 for technical operation.)
>Myl's still asleep. This headache might not help, but that secret file is just itching to be opened! (Please roll 1d100 for technical operation.)
>One in the dome, two in the heart. Killing Gaius might not help, but it sure is a start. (Please roll 2d100 for attacking and evasion.)

Gingerly, you begin to unfurl yourself from the mass of bedsheets on your cot. The itch in your throat and the sweat on your skin can only be cured by one thing - a bath. The rest of the day can kiss your clit until you've gotten a fucking shower in, that's for sure.

You plod over to one of the empty shower stalls, close the door behind you, and turn the taps on. Only when the lukewarm water begins to hit your face do you realize that you're still in yesterday's clothes, but you can't seem to rustle up enough fucks to give. You hold yourself up by placing one hand on a puce-colored wall, tilt your head upward, and just let the water flow. Each water droplet splashes onto your face in a soothing mist; sure, it's not enough to take away the headache, but it's more than enough to take the edge off.

Liquid soap finds its way into your hands, and you start to just lazily slather it on your body. First your face, then your arms and legs, then your chest and the unmentionables. It's one of those comforting rituals that just puts a smile on your face, even though you know the rest of the day is gonna wipe that smile right off. When you finish with the lathering, then comes the rinsing, which feels just as good the second time around.

Finally, you step out of the shower in a fresh(-ish) tank-top and new cargo pants. As an afterthought, you retrieve the two clips and your pistol from the pile of dirty clothes next to the shower stalls.

Feeling refreshed, you stretch out your arms and pop out your back at the same time. From the looks of it, it's still pretty early, and no one's really waking up just yet. More free time for you, you guess.

There is one thing you haven't tried in a while, and now would be the perfect time to do it. While rubbing a towel on your head to dry out your hair, you head over to the holoboard. There's already a chair pulled up in front of it, meaning that someone had been trying to use it recently.

Taking a seat, you double-tap the icon to open up the encrypted file. The usual security measures pop up, but this time...oh, this time, you're prepared. You grit your teeth, ignoring the headache that is threatening your head, and begin to work. Old backdoor routes and code rush into your head from muscle memory, and it all just starts to click. Hell, you're working so good that your headache is starting to fuck off! But Myl seems to be just as competent at this as you are, if not more so. For each trick you pull out, she's got three to counter it. Rewriting administrator permissions, spoof accounts, the old copy-paste trick that no one guards against anymore because it's such an archaic fucking method - she's got everything blocked off.

The more you try, the more frustrated you get. Nothing seems to be working! None of your old tricks - wait. There is... the last resort.

>>
>>39572110
A malicious grin spreads across your face. You grab the bottom of the holoboard's frame and start to wiggle it while tapping in lines of coding with your free hand. The bottom frame is usually where the power source is located, and if you could just dislodge it for juuuust a second...

...that did it! The security encryption clears off as the screen flickers between life and death! You stop shaking the holoboard and straighten yourself up, staring at the screen. In front of you is an empty window with a single open text line. A virtual keyboard pops up underneath the open text line.

Typing in 'Myl', you press the enter key. A digitized version of Myl's head pops up from behind the little window, floating on top of it and sticking its tongue out at you. "Nope. That ain't it, ya sneaky faker. Ya got two guesses left."

>>39572274
Rude little shit. You type in a snarky rebuttal - 'fuck your shit Myl' - and make a point of giving it bad capitalization and punctuation. In response, the digitized Myl-head furrows its brow at you. "Well, that ain't nice at all, y'hear? You quit that right now. Oh, and ah'm givin' ya one last chance."

>>39572270
Ugh, fine. Maybe it's time to be serious. You type in the name of the first wanzer that you piloted under Myl's watch - 'Fyanna'. Fake-Myl cracks a smile. "There's th' Myl ah know. Now, why didn't'chy'all type that in th' first place, darlin'? Shoot, ah woulda opened this up no problem!"

The window blinks away. In its place is the encrypted file, opened and ready for you to look through. No tricks or little heads come to cover up the screen, no pop-ups try to make the holo-board blow up, and you don't hear anyone wake up just yet. Finally, you can see what the hell Myl's been trying to hide from all of you. In the file, there are two icons. The first icon seems to be some sort of text document titled 'C:7103 - Metatron'. The second icon is a video or an image of Myl in a labcoat, for some reason. It's actually kinda strange to see her in something other than daisy dukes and that yellow mini-jacket of hers...

It's a little bit risky, but you've got the time to look at both. You open up the text file first, widening it just enough so that you can read it without anyone reading over your shoulder.

'The new material is called 'metatron'. I called it that because of some of the old fables that came from the ancient books. It's a completely cubical metal from the second it's mined to the second it's depleted. Although it emits a serious amount of energy, metatron doesn't seem to be radioactive in any capacity. It's weightless to the touch and tends to hover around one foot above the closest surface directly underneath it. The color of metatron may have something to do with how much energy it generates. White metatron is some of the less common material out there, but a standard Union unit of the stuff can generate enough energy to power a city for a whole century. Weaponizing this is easy - simple, even - but being able to control the weapon that comes out of it...that'll be difficult. In any case, any attempt to try and break metatron has come up fruitless. It looks like the only way to destroy a cube of metatron would be to actually drain it. Once metatron is drained of energy, it morphs into regular stone, losing its gravity-defying weightlessness."

"One useful note - placing metatron in a sound emitter can jam radio signals. A similar effect applies to kinetic pulse wave emitters, such as one of those 'pile bunkers' that wanzer pilots like to use; in that case, it sends an equal and opposite kinetic pressure upon an object, effectively paralyzing it. Think of someone pushing a wall forward, then having someone equal to the first person push at the wall from the other side. The wall doesn't move. Further study will have to be conducted."

1/?
>>
>>39573145
Next up is the video. Making sure that you lower the volume on the holoboard's speakers, you open up the video to a proper size and begin to watch.

The video begins with Myl in her labcoat, standing in front of the camera. "Durned Tyhran tech...if y'all'd just give me some good ol' fashioned Inner Ring tech, we wouldn't hafta deal with all this bullhockey, ya hear? Ah had ta jury rig all this shit with mah own hands!" Was it just you, or was the grease monkey's accent thicker? Myl then steps behind the camera, revealing a small, monitor-sized cube of what you're assuming is metatron. It's bright enough to make the whole screen almost pure white, and you almost have to shield your eyes due to the sheen. When Myl returns to block the metatron, she holds up a transparent, box-like device. All around the edges were thin coils, and one side of the box had a huge lens sticking out in the very center. "Ah built a big ol' box with some Tesla Coils on it an' a lens. Ya wanted weapons, so ah'll give ya th' biggest weapon yer pretty li'l faces'll ever see!"

Myl walks toward the cube of metatron, opens the box, and encases the cube within. She closes up the box and almost sprints back behind the camera. "Now, as y'all see, it ain't doin' nothin." She says. Her finger pops out from the side of the video screen, pointing right at the lens. "Watch th' lens."

The cube begins to rotate slowly within the hollow device. As it spins, the tesla coils begin to crackle with energy, almost making pitches of sound with each snap in the air. Soon, Myl has to start screaming just to be heard above the frequent crackles and snaps. "IT'S CHARGIN' UP! HOLD ON TA YER BRITCHES!" Just when you think it couldn't spin any faster, a shimmering beam of energy and electricity shoots out from the metatron, focused by Myl's Lens. It shoots straight up into the air, followed closely by gigantic chunks of ceiling falling down to the ground. "HAHA, YEAH!"

2/?
>>
>>39573438
Suddenly, warning lights begin to flash all around the room being filmed. As loud as the concentrated beam is, the announcement being repeated over an unseen intercom is louder. "Rebel presence has been detected in this sector! All personnel, please evacuate the premises! Repeat - rebel presence has been detected in this sector..." Myl rushes over to the device with a remote in hand, flicking switches and pressing buttons. She holds her hand out to cover the camera...

...and that's where the video ends. You're not quite sure what to think, right now.

There's got to be more to this mystery than you'll be able to get from the board, and Myl's not going to tell you jack shit. If she was, she wouldn't have hidden this from the whole Pack with triple encryption and all sorts of bullshit. You close the video and text windows, sealing the file back up and turning the holoboard off. You don't have much time before everyone wakes up, so you decide to do a little bit of snooping while you have the chance.

Even with all of your gear on, you're still as stealthy as a shadow. You check all over the commons room without making a single creak, turning over every item that you can to look for clues. Unfortunately, your search is fruitless. Either Myl is hiding her secrets on her person, or you're just not good at searching for things.

At the end of your search, sunlight begins to pour into the room. Roy's fuzzy ears twitch and spasm as he jerks awake, shooting upright in his cot. Nahn and Myl seem to wake up at the same time, with the former almost bouncing up from her bed while the latter just sort of rolls down to the ground. Sofia and Deks seem to be the more peaceful of the group in terms of waking up, and they just rise out of bed and get to working the kitchen. Last but not least, the shaved wrinkle-dick - sorry, Gaius gets out of bed and folds the sheets with his one arm.

As the team starts to get to their self-assigned duties, you seem to notice something peculiar. No one wants to look at you. Everyone seems to make a point of not making eye contact with you, to the point of avoiding your path if you pass by. Even Myl, as friendly as the belle may be, just looks away when you wave at them. Whatever happened last night must have really alienated everyone. If only you could remember...

Y'know what? Fuck all this eggshell buillshit. You take out your shades and put them on your face. "RED PACK! LISTEN UP! I don't quite remember what the fuck I did last night, but you're all acting like I killed a gods-damned puppy. If you guys tell me what the fuck happened, I'll tell you guys why I did it. I don't want this atmosphere to fuck up any team spirit we've got, so let's all man the fuck up and talk about it like adults." You bark out, folding your arms.

No one wants to respond first. Everyone is looking at each other - even Gaius gives the others a confused stare. It was Nahn who finally decided to break the silence. "Well...sir, you kind of...sort of... I don't know if you remember or not, but you kinda shoved Myl and Deks out of the way while you dismounted from your wanzer. Then there was the thing you did with the new recruit, Gaius, where you, uh, waterboarded him while straddling him. After that, you...um...Myl, please take over."

Myl sighed, taking off her cap to brush her messy locks. "Awright, awright, I'll talk. By th' time me an' th' rest o' the group got in here, you an' One-Arm over there were havin' a li'l tussle on th' chair. Y'all were drinkin' mah special whiskey, by th' by, and ya almost up an' drowned th' man! Ya sobbed about somethin' ta do with yer old team, th' Bullseye Squad. Then ya went an' - uh, how should ah put it..."

"I shall take over." Deks chittered, stepping forward. "Madam Captain, you started to try and attack the one-armed recruit with the butt of your gun to his crotch. When we attempted to restrain you, you almost attacked poor Roy and gave me a rather painful punch to my <kriii-riiik> sac. It took the pro'tau's timely intervention to finally stop you. She touched your forehead, began to spasm, and then - well, I don't quite know how to put it. In short, both of you fainted."

1/?
>>
>>39574883
Roy was next to speak. "Captain, you were really mad last night! We all kind of heard what happened when you told him, but Centurion Gaius is - I mean, I'm not presuming to tell you what you should do, but...well, he's one of us, now. We all heard what the Prallat said. And we just want to know if you're going to be okay."

Sofia, for once, didn't speak. Or, rather, she just looked at you expectantly. In fact, everyone seemed to be waiting for you to say something. You could sense that they weren't angry with you, though. On the contrary, most of them seemed to be worried.

>How do you respond?
>A. Positively. You should probably apologize about what happened last night.
>B. Professionally. Last night happened. Let's all put that behind us and get to work, for today.

You owe them some sort of answer. Keeping a stern look on your face, you glance at everyone from behind your shades. "What happened last night was because of some shit between me and that one-armed fucker over there. He's the reason why two of my old squadmates are gone, and the people he used to work for are responsible for fucking murdering the other two. One of those people was my old CO, so...yeah, I took it personally. But that's last night, and that was also because of heavy drinking without any food. It's in the past, and I won't let that shit affect how I lead you guys."

Myl raised her brow. "You sure about that, Sparky? Ya almost tore us all up ta shreds, last night." She asks.

"Yeah. I'm sure. As long as we all can put it behind us, that shit didn't happen." At least self-restraint is becoming less and less of a chore. You're starting to get used to keeping certain information to yourself. Satisfied, the rest of the team splits up and gets back to their daily duties. Speaking of which, Sofia takes a moment to point over to a large corkboard that was hung up on the fridge before stepping away.

From where you were standing, you could see that a duty chart had been posted on the center. Everyone's names had been scribbled down the left most column, while the topmost row had a list of jobs. The only names that weren't listed were the new guy's name and your own. Strange.

Speaking of strange things, Gaius seems to be coming up to talk to you. He stands a few feet away from you and folds his one arm behind his back. "Permission to speak, captain?"

"Two things, first." You say, holding up a middle finger to his face. "First? Cross me and die. If you so much as touch a single hair on any other squad mate's head, I will come for you personally. Second...lemme check something." Slinking closer to the fridge, you take a quick peek at what Roy is assigned to do, for the day. His tasks are rather simple things - he's just doing clothes-washing and helping Sofia set up the front of the Warehouse for training. With that clearing up any worries you may have in your heart, you turn back to Gaius and nod. "Okay. Permission granted."

Gaius relaxes his stance. "Thank you. I wanted to talk to you about some things, but that can wait until later. For now, I need to address my lack of an arm. I know that you've been put in contact with the Supplier - most of the teams that survive the first day meet up with him. He supplies wanzer parts and weapons to the whole underground market, under the watchful gaze of the Empire. He's also got a stock of biomechanical augmentations that you might be interested in, but they aren't cheap. I'd like to ask you for permission to purchase a new arm for me, since piloting a wanzer with one arm is akin to death and I'm going to be participating in the next match."

Ah, fuck, he's got a point. That stump of his won't exactly do well with piloting your C-Grade wanzers, unless you and Myl decide to give him some sort of special hook-up. You could do that, sure, but the wiring and the mechanics involved are complicated if you don't take your time. The next match could happen at any moment, so you would be forced to have to rush it. Then again, you could always just let him pilot one-armed out of spite...

You narrow your eyes at Gaius, lowering your shades so that you can pierce the man with your stare. "...fine. We'll need you in top fighting form if we want to go and fuck up our opponents. Let's head over to the holoboard."

The two of you head to the holoboard, where you quickly pull up the contact information for the Greaves Mil-Inc Complex. It takes a few minutes, but you're able to set up contact with the company. Anya's smiling face pops into view, and the smile grows twice as large when she sees who she's speaking to. "Miss Cuvic! How wonderful to see you! I was watching your match last night - fantastic! Even when you were facing two strong wanzers AND Dune Worms, you really showed off the capabilities of our products! It was a good idea to get in touch with you!" She gushes happily.

Gaius gives you a slightly concerned look, but he decides not to say anything in regards to the matter. Before Anya can go any further, you stop her by holding up your hand. "We're here for business, since I cut you a deal. Listen, this guy's been conscripted into my squad. He can't fight without a fucking arm, so I'm going to need some biomech implants for him. What do you have?"

Anya looks over to Gaius, tapping her chin. She then turns away to a monitor behind her, taps at a few buttons, and brings up a small list on your holoboard.

BASIC MOD - Works just like an arm! The cheapest, but...well, it works as intended, at least. It won't cost you that much.
ADVANCED MOD - Upgraded with Greaves Mil-Inc. Neurolink technology to improve response times! More expensive, but with some good stats. You're gonna have to scrimp and save for a while, if you don't do any jobs.
PREMIUM MOD - Top of the line arm-augmentation combined with Greaves Mil-Inc. Beta technology, this does more than just improve response times. This will cost you an arm and a leg, but it's worth every penny. You'll definitely have to do a job for the Supplier, if you pick this.

"Well, those are the mods we have in stock. That last one isn't supposed to be listed, but I feel like it's a good investment to keep on doing business with you. If you do get the Premium Mod, I'm going to have to ask you for a small favor, though...just a teensy one!" She adds. "All I need you to do is to show off the capabilities of all of our wanzers. In your next match, I'm going to need you to bring out at least one of each type - speed, power, and defense - and have them all get at least one kill. Okay?"

Part of you wants to ask for something cheaper, when you look at the prices. Judging by Anya's smile, however, you can tell that she's already cutting you a deal. Hmm...

While you're not all too keen on giving Gaius an edge, you do want to win the next match. You tap the Advanced Mod option, and Anya clears the screen. "Ah, the Advanced Mod option, huh? Well, I was hoping you'd help me with the favor, but I can understand if the Games don't exactly give you a premium paycheck." She jokes. The humor is lost upon you, and you show this by glowering at her.

"Aaaaallrighty, then! We'll send your package over to you by the end of the day, alright? And please do consider the offer that I put on the table. It'll really put the Greaves Mil-Inc name above the rest. Anyway, have a good day!" Anya says, waving to you while the video feed cuts off. Now that you've dealt with that, you turn to your one-armed subordinate and nod. "There. You've got your arm. Go talk to Myl to see what the hell you can do for the team while we wait."

Gaius gives a sharp salute, turning on his heels and stepping out of the commons room. With his shit done...well, actually, you're not quite sure what you should be doing. Your name isn't on the list for a reason, right? Myl probably knows why. Then again, she's basically given you some free time, so you might as well put it to good use...

>>39578075
Well, it looks like we're making group tactics a priority.

Writing.
>>
>>39577873
The best thing to do, for now, is to just set up a sort of training regimen for the squad that involves something more than just hoping they'll follow your orders. If, somehow, the group either gets split up or is forced to work without you, they'll need to be able to figure out how to work as a team without stepping on each others' toes. With you, they'll also need to work on being able to listen to your orders and follow them. The only problem is in how to train them.

Most of your team has some sort of military training. They should know the basics of orders, some formations, and a few rudimentary tactics, like flanking. Roy and Deks are the only ones you really have to worry about, and even then, they seem smart enough to catch on to the concept of shooting people from different angles. You don't exactly have to train them on what you want them to do. They just need to know how to do it. For that, you can give them a hands-on course on attacking.

Some three-on-three skirmishes should do the trick. If you set up some fake cover around the front of the Warehouse, that'll help along with it. After that, you guys can work on the two-on-two stuff, and then work on whole-unit tactics. Shit, this is sounding like a better and better idea! If you're lucky, someone in the team might show that they have a knack for this kind of thing, and they might even help the rest of you learn a thing or two!

Heading over to the holoboard, you begin to draw up a plan...

>>
>>39578413
Well, frankly, I've got the end goal in mind, but I don't know how long it will take to get there. I've admitted in the past that I do this off the cuff, for the most part, with only the bare-bones stuff being planned out.

It would be nice if I could make it to at least 20 or 25. So far, the quest has a big enough following that I can justify going on. If I feel that only one or two people are hanging on, I'll have to start thinking about shutting it down.

So, in short, as long as it takes to get to the end. Or if there just isn't any interest anymore.
