You slide a gold coin across the counter to the inn keeper. “Can I get a room for the day and two beers for me and my enemy over there?” You jerk your head over to a table which Klossner has secured for the two of you.

The inn keep snatches the coin and tucks it into a pouch on his belt, reaching up to a board on the wall behind him to retrieve a key. “Room thirty six. Third floor, third door on the right. Can I getcha anything else?”

You slide across another gold coin, which the inn keep snatches before busying himself pouring you two gigantic mugs of beer from a keg sitting in a rack behind the counter. “Yeah, a change of clothes for the girl, and prepare a hot bath as well. Oh, what do you serve here?” The inn keep glances at you, and then at a menu written in three different language. You see Rhynian, although it's really poor Rhynian. The other two scripts you don't recognize. “Right, well. I'll try the guar stew.” You glance towards Maximillien. “Has he eaten here before?”

The inn keeper nods, setting the two frothy mugs of beer down on the table in front of you. You pass the room key to Aylin before picking up both. “Last night he had the roast. Night before he had Salmon. Seemed to prefer the roast.”

Already starting to turn towards the table, you nod to the inkeep. “Great, get him an order of the roast.” You turn your attention to Aylin. “Why don't you run upstairs to the room and enjoy the bath, change into some new clothes? It ought to do you good and you don't want to show up to the Academy covered in blood and soot.”

She nods and wanders off towards the stairs while you make your way over to the table where Klossner sits. Setting one mug down in front of him, you snag the other seat for yourself. Taking a sip, you find the beer surprisingly flavorful. You're not really much of a beer drinker, but this isn't bad. It reminds you oddly of oranges, or perhaps lemons. Some sort of citrus fruit, at least. After taking a long draught and then let the mug hit the wooden table. “So, tell me. Grandmaster Fire vatis?”

Klossner nods. He's leaned forward in his seat, shoulders hunched, clutching the handle of his mug. He looks exhausted, and you can't really blame him. You're not feeling a hundred percent either. “Yes, Fire Grandmaster. I'm actually here to oversee the excavation of the Rhynian ruins. We're trying to extract the Rhynian Generator. We want to see if we can't use it to power a few devices we have back at the Academy.” He pauses to take a drink, but quickly resumes speaking. “I focused on Fire after my defeat, decided Water wasn't really for me. I'm primarily focused on the non-physical aspects of Fire magic. False images, that sort of thing.”

You pass the time talking shop. You find out that the spell he cast which very nearly turned you into a burnt husk was a high powered Fire spell altered by the Beam metamagic. He was banking on you trying to block it with ice, because he knew the Beam spell would tear through any Water magic you used to defend yourself. He really thought he had you there, but then you started healing yourself. He ask about how you managed to rot his flesh, and you tell him the story of how you attained Grandmastery of Water Magic. After that he tells you his own story. He gathered a pyre around himself and lit it aflame, then while ensuring that the flame didn't burn him he had an illusory version of himself walk three times around Anthus.

Your meals come, and conversation is halting while the two of you eat. You find out a little about where he's from. The Northern Marches are an area of Keisland, a kingdom ruled by Konig Wilhelm the Fat. You wonder if it's the same kingdom from which Albrecht Teufel hailed. Apparently Klossner is from the farthest western reaches of the kingdom, where his father rules as Markgraf, some sort of border prince. He was sent to attend the Academy of Anthus because he wasn't accepted to the Akademie der Turmberg. He was apparently quite important because he got to sit on on the Furstenbank, which Klossner explains as some sort of chamber of nobility which has power independent of the king.

Shortly after you've both finished your meals Aylin comes down the steps, looking much better than when she went up. Her clothes are no longer torn and ragged, and her hair no longer caked with dirt. Nor is she covered in dried blood and soot. She comes to join your table after a moment of glancing around the inn. Fidgeting nervously, she glances between Maxmillien and yourself before speaking. “Can we leave now? I dislike this place. There are too many people, and they're too loud.”

You finish off your second beer and push yourself to your feet, clapping Maximillien on the shoulder. “Well, I guess I need to be going. Good luck with your excavations. Say, what was that spell you used to create those three golems? Was it Animate?”

He nods. “Animate and raw fire magic, yeah. It requires a lot of vys to cast but after you cast the spell all you have to do is focus on controlling them. They're pretty simple minded creatures, so you have to micromanage them. If I hadn't been so focused on attacking that sphere you put up I might've been able to avoid the wave you hurled at me.”

You and Aylin leave the inn to find Regulus standing by the guar. You pause as the brisk air hits your bare chest, glancing down at yourself. Pulling off your cloak, you withdraw a new tunic and swiftly pull it over your head, letting it hang loose. It's died a rich burgundy color, and the cotton is quite soft. That done you once more drape your cloak over your shoulders and make your way over to the guar.

Regulus pulls himself onto his guar's back the moment he sees you walk out, and you follow suit once you reach the tether. Aylin once again elects to ride behind you, wrapping her hands around your waist to keep herself steady. You pull back on the reins and lean your weight back, prompting the guar to take a few halting steps backwards before you tug the reins to one side, turning it around. Digging your heels into your guar's flanks, the three of you set off through the city.

She interrupts your lecture. “How is that possible, though? Without a soul would the body not simply become a useless sack of flesh?”

You shrug your shoulders. “You're right in that the soul contains much of your personality and memories, but the mind is still its own separate entity. You can survive without a soul, for quite some time based on my experiences. Anyway, channeling is simply tapping into the reserve of power dwelling within you and willing it to obey your commands. Once you've fallen into a trance you should feel this pulsing mass in your core, like the beating of your heart but slower and more powerful. This is your reserve of vys. You must latch onto it and tear away a piece, and force it to act as you wish. Try it tonight, after we've made camp.”

You glance towards Regulus, and shrug. “Let's see about sharing a camp tonight. Ought to be interesting, meeting a fellow traveler.” Regulus just stares at you without making a noise, while Aylin tightens her arms around your waist. You take both to be assent and spur your guar towards the game trail.

It's no more than three hundred feet before you enter a clearing, and you see a man sitting at a camp fire. Some manner of horned rabbit roast over the fire, the smell enticing to say the least, and a tent is set up a few feet from the fire. In an instant the man has leapt to his feet and drawn a long, thin sword. He's dressed finely, in a black silk tunic which is tailored to fit him tightly and matching pants which are inordinately poofy around his thighs. A scar cuts across his forehead and the bridge of his nose, and another cuts from his nostril down to his chin.

He eyes you warily, and you feel him channel vys in preparation for a spell. You hold your hands up in mock surrender. “Easy, easy. The one thing people aren't mentioning here amidst all this talk of "amass power quest" and shit, is with the way the whole thing's going, it'll be over by the end of Fall at the latest, with most of that time spent clearing Pavala and Elaudia, with maybe a week dedicated to something metaplot related.

You carefully dismount your guar, turning to help Aylin down afterwards. Regulus follows suit, but rather than approach the fire he stands guard at the entrance to the game trail. “It's fine, only myself and the girl actually eat. Regulus, the construct, neither eats nor sleeps.” You make a fuss about fiddling with your saddle bags, whilst really removing two tents from your cloak. You sling one over each shoulder and go about setting them up away from the campfire with Aylin's help.

By the time you've finish the fat on the rabbit is crackling and the meat has cooked to a golden brown. As you approach the campfire, you note with some mild concern that the man's eyes linger on Aylin just a few moments too long. You resolve to keep an eye on him as you take a seat, Aylin coming to sit next to you. “I'm Mikhael, this is Aylin, and as I've mentioned the construct is Regulus. Who might you be?”

Markos raises an eyebrow curiously. “Khmedi? Last I heard they didn't take well to your kind.” You shrug, still chewing, and he continues. “Anthus was attacked by a winged lizard, a dragon. It burned down the market district and some of the slums before the City Guard brought it down with a lucky bolt from a ballista.” He tears off a bite of his own roast, speaking around a full mouth. “I plan to make my way to Chiron and flee north, to Aleamond. I have family there I can stay with.”

Markos eyes you suspiciously but doesn't say anything.

After making polite conversation you excuse yourself and Aylin, the two of you retiring to different tents of the night. As you lay down and debate how you'd like to spend your evening, you wonder whether or not Markos is going to cause any trouble over the course of the night.
