True, but on the other hand the best of three rule I had in the first thread resulted in some complaints because it nearly guarantees success for anything other than a crit fail. This is my first quest so I'm still looking for what works. Care to suggest a different set of rolling rules? I'll just say that I'm pretty intent on keeping the crits, I like them because they introduce a sense of randomness. They can send what was going smoothly crashing down, or save the player from a hopeless situation.

Oftentimes people use best of three, and raise the dc from 10 to 13/14, or something similar.
The main reason that it's used is because this is a one character game, so if we were to die from a series of shit rolls, then it'd be over, and all the QMs planning would have gone to waste, so the main character is given a bit of an advantage.

If you lurk a few quest threads, you'll see that even with bo3, success isn't guaranteed.

Your driver leaves the city limits and leaves the highway for a muddy, inland road. After a while you arrive at an open spot surrounded by dense woods. It's clear enough for a decent fight, but isolated enough to ward of any prying eyes.

After leaving the car the woman throws off her trenchcoat and assumes a fighting stance. "Let's see if you're pretender material."

Having exchanged some banter, the mood between the two of you has become a bit more casual. You decide to pry a bit into her affairs. "You got a place to stay? Those hellraisers burned mine down."

That raises a question. "Won't the rest of the Enforcers be coming after you as well, after not taking me down? They won't accept you letting me go, right?"

The woman responds by tossing you her car keys. "Take my car, get back to the city, ditch it and lay low. I'll tell anyone who asks that you stole it from me while we were fighting. The others aren't as good at tracking as I am so as long as you tone down the idiot dial, you should be fine. Keep a low profile: don't go outside unless you must, and even then only remain in highly populated areas."

"That sounds like a plan" you reply. You are not entirely satisified however. "But what do we do from here on?"

"You prepare yourself for the fight ahead. Master your skills, maybe try getting some hearts without getting the media all over your ass, whatever. Meanwhile I'll misdirect the rest of the Enforcers. When we attack the Demon King, we need to make sure the other Enforcers are far, far away. Only then will we stand a chance."

That sounds like a plan. Now you just need to lay low for a while.

You take her car and drive back to the city. You leave it behind in a rather bad neighborhood with the doors unlocked and the keys still in the ignition. Why go through the effort of ditching the car when some less than reputable young men are more than willing to take it off your hands? You're barely even around the corner before you can hear the car starting up and someone rapidly driving away. That's one of your problems solved, at least.

You make your way to a rather sleazy looking motel and rent one of the rooms. With your organ money you probably have enough to stay there for weeks, maybe even months, so there's no need to go out and "earn" any more money. Using your smart phone and your NEET h4xx0r sk1llz, you manage to set up 20 proxies. You now not only have to deal with the officers of the law, but the Enforcers as well, so you can't be too careful. After having sufficiently hidden your identity, you use a throwaway e-mail account to send a single e-mail to Maria.

"I won't see you for a while, I have to lay low. I can't explain anything right now. Don't reply." You suspect that Maria is a smart enough girl to roughly figure out what's going on. Now all you need to do is lay low.

After having had a quick shower you turn on the tv. For the first time in a while, you notice that there's no special news report. No major gang shootout, no diner slaughter, no organ harvesting, nothing. Just the regular news and some tv shows. It starts to dawn on you that perhaps Lilith was right, perhaps you were being a complete idiot these past few days. With that thought in mind, you turn off the tv and fall asleep.

That night you have yet another nightmare. You are once more a large, red ogre, but you're stuck in a large, stone room. Lava seeps in through the walls as a menacing voice asks you "You're not ready! You don't even know what mess you got yourself into!"

We're probably nearing the end, and looking back I have to say that I have a feeling everything was a bit of a mess.
