Last time, on Star Dust Quest...

You, Gavin Ashworth, inherited a generous sum of money as well as a neat frigate-class ship from a distant relative. After finally arriving to the venerable Stardust station, you threw together a ship crew and took off into the stars beyond. Your first contract may just be a milk run, but you never know where this might take you...

On the way to your destination, you decided to get to know your crew better. Ivan Chesnikov, your pilot, turned out to be a friendly merc with a history of flying escorts for haulers across the galaxy. You chose Troy Hall to be your engineer, and despite his bulky figure and giant mechanical arm, he happened to be more intelligent than he lets on. Not to mention, well-mannered. Ley'ra Laur seemed to have a troubled history, having just survived a Federation assault on her homeworld. Despite that, she was fairly experienced in combat tactics, and has already saved yours and Troy's life. For your ship doctor, you managed to convince the fresh-out-of-medschool Bethany Parks to work for you as an intern for free. Not that you won't see to it that her stay isn't enjoyable, but you were tight on money. Finally, the strange merc Viktor was hired as your ship gunner, and he seemed to have deep knowledge on many kinds of ship weapon systems.

Together, your crew seemed to be an interesting enough bunch. You've only been with them for a few hours, but you think you're already getting attached.

Midway to Freeport, you had come across a distress beacon. After a quick vote, you decided to respond... only to come across a seemingly abandoned and unidentified Federation research facility. With Troy Hall and Ley'ra Laur, you quickly swept through what little of the facility you could, only to come across a large room with a mysterious metal pod at its center. And despite your inner conflict on pressing the big red button in front of the pod, you did it anyways, only to reveal a woman in weird armour inside, hooked up to all kinds of weird machinery...
>>
>>39993393
Upon closer inspection, the woman in front of you seems to be shivering, staring forward blindly. You're still in awe, so much that you don't notice yourself lowering your revolver pointed at her. Ley'ra and Troy beside you seem just as shocked as you are, and neither of you can seem to find any words to speak.

“Captain? Gavin? What is going on?” you hear Ivan's voice say through your smart ring. You don't respond.

The woman slowly looks up to you with sky blue eyes through a strange helmet on top of her head, where all of the tubes and wires are attached to. Consciously, you look over to your companions, but they both give you an unknowing shrug. Raising your revolver, you take a step forward.

The woman blinks, but her eyelids begin to betray her. Upon realizing that someone is in front of her, she gasps, her eyes widening.

>Don't take any chances. Shoot her before she does something you'll regret.
>Lower your gun; show her that you're not here to harm her.
>”Who are you?”
>Write in.

(Just a warning, I'm going to have to leave for about 2 hours in about 2-3 hours from now due to something unavoidable coming up irl. I will come back and write all night, though. Sorry for the inconvenience.)

This post was incredibly punctual, but you may still want to post on twitter with a link to this thread as well, in case people aren't paying as much attention.

I just did. I tend to do that stuff after the first posts.

>Lower your gun; show her that you're not here to harm her.

We should explain who we are and why we're here before we do anything else, but asking who she is is a good second step after that.

Oh my bad. That's a good way to do it.

It's really the only polite thing to do.

Salvo Flight on station. Good afternoon SDA and /tg/

Come on, we all want problems with the Fire Legion.

Also, fix your ship sheets. Acceleration should be 14 and manoeuvrability 16.

Also, don't you dare to drop that fake slav act.

"Are you alright?" We did respond to a distress call, after all.
>>
>>39993427
With the girl's eyes focused on you, you notice the slight hint of fear in her eyes. You inhale, realizing just how critical the situation could be, especially to her.

Calmly, you lower your gun and raise your left hand, showing her that you mean no harm. You nod your head without taking your eyes off of hers, and thankfully, she seems to relax a bit. Notably, your companions lower their own weapons.

“...Hello,” you croak out, hopefully sounding kind. She blinks at your words, seemingly listening. Gulping, you continue. “My name is Gavin Ashworth. I'm here with my ship crew to... help. We responded to a distress beacon.”

She blinks again... maybe she doesn't understand you. You glance back to your companions; Ley'ra gives you an unknowing shrug while Troy's eyes remain on the girl in front of you. You turn back towards her.

“So... who are you? Do you need help?”

That's when a strained breath leaves her mouth.

“Ah... h-help...” she whispers, her voice strained. Your eyes widen and you hesitate on what to do next. That's when she begins to shiver more violently.

“Damn,” you say, looking back to your crew. “Should we get Beth?”

The girl starts to cough, sputtering with her chest heaving. You move to step forward, but she gives you one last strained look before passing out in her chair.

You hear Troy and Ley'ra step forward.

What should you do?
>Bring her back to your ship. Get Bethany to give the girl a look-over.
>Troy should be able to bring her back himself. Continue exploring the facility with Ley'ra, there's probably more to find.
>Leave her there.

(I won't include the write-in option that much, but that doesn't mean I won't allow it. I am okay with write-ins for anything, it's just redundant to include it every time.)

Mission aint over until we find out what happened here. We don't even know why the distress beacon was activated.

Then we can go back in together. I don't want to go further without our Tech dude.

“Troy, can you pick her up? Let's bring her back to Beth quick,” you order. Troy gives you a knowing nod.

“Should be no problem at all, I'll get her to safety,” he responds, moving towards her carefully. “I don't think she should be attached to all this machinery...”

“Wait--”

Before you can stop him, Troy pulls the helmet off of the unconscious girl. Thankfully, nothing seems to happen, and she appears to still be breathing. You step back to give Troy room as he carefully bends down to pick her up into his arms, rising up to face you.

“It's not long of a walk, and that turret you took care of was probably the only obstacle,” he says calmly.

“You can never be too sure,” Ley'ra chips in. “There was a distress beacon. We should come back to see where that came from...”

Both you and Troy give her an accepting nod.

“Beth,” you talk into your smart-ring. “We got a potential injured here. Get yourself ready.”

The trek back to your ship was mostly uneventful, save for Ley'ra tripping on the remains of the turret she shot down in the hurry. Luckily she regained her balance quick, but that didn't stop you from laughing at her.

After your group got up the ramp to your ship, you're met with Bethany. Before her on the floor is a red stretcher, and a bag of medical supplies lay open beside it. Her eyes widen when she sees the woman in Troy's arms.

“What the hell?” she asks, but Troy takes no time in placing her down on the stretcher.

“We found her in some sort of pod thing, hooked up to stuff. Can you give her a look over?” you explain as Bethany kneels down.
>>
>>39993960
“Yeah... okay,” she breathes, pulling on a pair of nylon gloves. Immediately, she touches the unconscious girl's neck and opens her eyelids to examine her irises with a flashlight. After several more moments of checking and Bethany muttering to herself, she looks up to you. “Vitals are fine. She looks... fine. I don't see anything wrong with her other than... neglect? She's surprisingly clean. It looks like she's never eaten anything. Ever.”

You raise an eyebrow and look over to her face, blonde locks of hair cascaded around it. “You can't make anything of this?”

“No. Looks like an ordinary human to me. I have yet to take blood samples, but yeah...”

You hear footsteps approaching from behind. Turning around, you see Viktor now standing beside Troy. Ley'ra appears to be filling him in with quiet whispers.

“What should we do with her, Captain?” Troy asks. He looks genuinely concerned, mainly for the girl.

>Fire up the Hypercomms room--see if you can contact anyone from the Federation to seek advice.
>”We're meeting with some Federation officials in Freeport. Considering we found her in one of their research facilities, maybe they'll know what to do.”
>”It might be best if we keep her a secret for now... who knows what attention this girl will bring us.”

“It might be best if we keep her a secret for now... who knows what attention this girl will bring us,” you say, your crew nodding back to you. “Considering we found her on a place that likely wasn't meant to be discovered, and all.” You look at Bethany. ”If you're sure she's stable, Beth, I believe we should look through this facility a little more. There might be answers.”

Bethany glares at you. “I told you to not call me Beth.”

“Just bring the girl back to the infirmary,” you tell her, ignoring her plight. “Let her rest there.”

“I will help Bethany bring her there on the stretcher,” Viktor adds in, and you nod.

Your crew stands at ready. Who will you bring, going back into the facility?
>Ley'ra. She's proven herself to be valuable.
>Troy. This place is full of machinery.
>Viktor. He's knowledgable on this sort of stuff, maybe he cab help inquire about things.

“Okay, Ley'ra and Troy, we're heading back out. Let's try to sweep this place quickly,” you explain as your crew gets to work. You turn to Bethany and Viktor, and make sure to talk into your smart-ring for Ivan to hear. “If anything arises, ping me on my smart-ring. You guys have a smart-ring or something with Nexus for comms, right?

“I've got Nexus built into my arm,” Troy says, nodding his head towards said arm.

“I have a smart-ring too, but it was built by the Legion,” Ley'ra says, showing the metal bracelet around her wrist.

“Me too, from the Federation” Bethany agrees, showing a white one on hers.

“In my mask,” Viktor says.

“Me too, but I can use ship communications,” Ivan says through the ship's speakers.

“Huh. So that's why you guys always wear your masks,” you say, resting your rifle over your shoulder. “Alright, let's move out.”

“I think there was another door on the other side of the room we found the woman in. I think it was labeled 'EXP AA B2',” Ley'ra states, stepping forward. Want to go through there or backtrack and go down one of the hallways where we hid from the turret?”

Well?

“Let's go to that door, Ley'ra. It seemed important.”

At your words, you take off with Ley'ra and Troy close behind while Bethany and Viktor bring the girl away. That's when you stop and look to Ley'ra.

“Oh... yeah. Take point, Ley'ra.” She gives you an approving nod before stepping forward, leading the three of you.

With your rifle over your shoulder, you draw your over-sized revolver and have that pointed forward. If there's some sort of giant mutated monster in the facility, you sure as hell want to put the biggest hole you can through it.

As your group passes by the shattered turret, Ley'ra makes note on giving it a wide berth, lest she trips again.

Finally, you make it to the door Ley'ra had pointed out. A big glowing red sign above the door is labeled 'EXP AA B2', just like she said. The three of you press yourselves against the wall next to it.

“Okay... I'm going to peak inside,” Ley'ra says. You nod, making sure to keep close enough to pull her out. It's a little hard to make out her features in the dark pod room, but her milky white skin makes it easy to see her.

She turns back to the door with her gun pointed forward. Carefully, she pulls the door open and looks into the room with her rifle. After a moment of looking around, she opens the door completely and stands in front of the opening. Turning to you, she gives you a small nod before walking inside, her steps silent. Dutifully, you follow closely behind.
>>
>>39994589
Who is this thundertits and why should I want to fuck her?
>>
>>39994626
The room is just as dark as the pod room you were just in, and it's not nearly as large. It's dimly lit by a single overhead lamp, the other three seemingly smashed or broken. There aren't many features that interest you other than the two doors on either side of the room. Large terminals line the walls, but they all are smashed--someone wanted this information destroyed.

However, on the other side of the room is a glass display, brightened by white fluorescent lights. And inside of the display box is a pristine rifle made out of silvery metal... almost looking alien.

After some more inspection, Ley'ra turns to you. “Room looks clear,” she says, not dropping her rifle or posture.

>Move on to one of the next rooms.

We can come back for the gun after we've searched the whole station. Getting information is more useful than any gun, and if we take it we might set off some alarm.

I think we should come back for the gun if we are able to conclude a search of the whole station.

You begin to pace around the room, examining all of the tech inside. It doesn't look like there are any terminals that were left undamaged. Troy moves to a mangled server, looking at it hopelessly. There isn't much to this room.

However, you spot a small datachip on one of the tables. You gesture it to your crew, and both of them give you a shrug.

“Keep it for when we get back to the ship, it could hold some answers,” Troy whispers. You agree, pocketing the datachip.

You turn your attention to the display and walk over to it. “Troy, can you come and see what this is?” you whisper. Ley'ra and Troy give you a small nod, their guns still drawn. With your own pointed forwards, you move to the side while Troy walks over to you.

“Looks like a standard display,” he says, giving it a look over. “I've seen these exact makes in a lot of Triglav labs--they're mostly just to keep non-volatile specimens in a display. Should be fine to open... I can't say I've seen that sort of rifle or anything like it, though.”

You give him a nod. “Okay. Ley'ra? What about you?”

She glances over her shoulder, walking up to you two with her eyes trained on the gun. “Mm... never seen anything like it. I've seen weapons made with reverse-engineered Herald tech, but even those looked different than this.”

“Well alright. I'm gonna open it,” you say. When they both give you a nod, you press the release button. To your surprise, there is no hissing noise that these things usually make in the movies, but the glass simply lifts up. After a moment of nothing, you shrug and grab the gun.

It's surprisingly light, and it seems to use a standard battery pack for plasma weapons.

You've got yourself a new shooty thing! What will you do with it?

“Troy, you can have it for now. You have the most experience with Triglav stuff, so you will probably be the least likely to blow yourself up,” you say, offering him the gun.

“Thanks, Gavin,” Troy laughs, putting his sidearm into its holster and taking the gun from you. He shoulders it and aims down the room, testing out its feel. “Huh, it's pretty light. There's also a select fire button on it... I'll keep it on its normal state.”

“Probably wise,” you say. “In fact, don't shoot anything yet. We'll only use it as a last resort.”

“Understood. I'll only shoot if you give me the get-go,” he responds.

“Alright, let's move.”

You give Ley'ra a nod, and she leads you to one of the doors at the end of the room. As is with your standard door opening procedure, she slowly looks into the room for a moment before opening the door wide, her rifle pointed forwards. She stays there for a moment before slowly walking inside, gesturing for you to follow.

“...Clear,” she whispers. Upon entering, you find much of the same things as the last room, except there's no fancy display or gun. Broken terminals and machinery litter the place, their screens all smashed in.

“Was it necessary to smash the screens?” you complain, examining more of them. You kneel down to take a look at the computers, but their insides have been thoroughly mangled.

“Whoever was here got out in a hurry, but they sure had time to destroy it all,” Troy remarks, poking at another smashed terminal.

“Let's go to the next room,” you say, and Ley'ra leads you into the next. And just like the rooms before it, it was full of smashed computers and machinery. Nobody. Nothing.

After thorough examination, there doesn't seem to be anything of immediate value to you. So you move onto the next.

This time, the room looks like it was a break room. Tables and chairs were scattered around the place and a counter sat on the opposite side of the room. On it was a coffee maker and a toaster.

“Well this sucks,” you mutter to yourself, lowering your gun.
>>
>>39995508
“Captain!” Ley'ra calls from one of the corners of the room. “Look at this!”

Startled, you look over to her to see her standing over a small circular device on the counter. You and Troy exchange a glance before walking over.

“It's a hologram projector,” Ley'ra says as you two step closer. “Maybe it could hold answers?”

You look at the device and there's a simple button to press, presumably to display whatever's stored on it.

“Can't hurt to see what it is,” Troy says.

Inhaling, you move your hand to press the button. You almost step back when a small screen is projected outwards from the device, displaying a simple message in orange:

“X: FLO FacB2 0707

Leave the girl. Leave the facility. The Legion comes, a Harbinger has been born.

Exp.”

The three of you read the message thrice, but you can't really make much out of it.

“Legion? Harbinger?” you whisper to yourself. “Ley'ra, does this mean the Cerberus Legion?”

A ghostly look populates her face, but she gives you a doubtful frown. “No... I don't think we had anything to do with a facility like this. We're just mercs.”

“That's awfully cryptic... maybe we should go, Gavin,” Troy edges in, still re-reading the message.

“It's probably wise for us to leave... I don't like the sound of all of this,” you say. Thankfully, Troy and Ley'ra nod, agreeing with you. “Hey, I don't think we have a toaster or coffee maker. I'm bringing them.”

Troy rolls his eyes and grabs the coffee maker. You grab the toaster.

The walk back to your ship was mostly silent, the smashed terminals giving you a strange ghostly feeling. For some reason, you don't feel safe anymore. That you're in an undisclosed part of space puts you on edge, and you think that this facility is going to attract some unwanted attention. No, you don't think it's with the law...

As soon as the air lock to your ship closes behind you, you tell Ivan on your smart-ring to take off. After his compliant response, Troy speaks up.

“I'm going to go check on the girl. She should be in the infirmary,” he says, walking away with the coffee maker still in his hands. You look over to Ley'ra.

“We should go, too. This all relates back to her, somehow.” You gesture with your head towards the direction of the infirmary and start to walk off.

“Captain... wait,” Ley'ra says from behind you.

“I told you, you can call me Gavin,” you say after turning around. You stop walking when you see that she has something to say. “What's up, Ley'ra?”

She takes in a breath before speaking. “I just wanted to thank you for letting me take point.”

You think you feel some of the tension leave you. “...It's no problem, Ley'ra. I hired you for a reason, you know.” Ley'ra gives you a smile and a respectful nod. Returning your own, you gesture for her to follow you. That's when you realize you're still holding the toaster. “Let's go to the infirmary, yeah?”

“Okay,” she giggles.

Ley'ra's approval: +1

Upon getting to the infirmary, you see Troy standing outside the opening. You enter the room to see Bethany leaning against the infirmary bed. The girl you rescued is still unconscious, but she looks like she's calmly sleeping on the bed, now.

“So, what's new?” Bethany asks as you enter. Ley'ra and Troy stay outside.

“Well, I got a toaster,” you say, showing it to her. She rolls her eyes. “Also, I think we should leave this facility as far behind as possible.”

Her eyes harden. “Why?”

“...I'll fill the rest of you in, soon. How's the girl?” you say, peaking over her shoulder at the girl in question.

“Stable. Nothing out of the ordinary. As I said, I have yet to take blood samples, but I kinda wanted to wait for your permission to do so.”

Something about having people needing your permission kind of fills you with joy. Before you can respond, you hear footsteps approaching your group. Outside the infirmary, you see Viktor standing there as well. Might as well as fill them all in, now.

“Okay... so, some of you are probably wondering why we're leaving so soon,” you say, Viktor and Bethany nodding. You make sure to let your smart-ring record what you're saying for Ivan to hear. “So, we came across this in the facility.”
>>
>>39996419
You put the toaster on the floor and shove a hand into your pockets, bringing out the circular projection device you found in the facility break-room. Holding it in your left hand, you press the button with your right. The same message it showed before displays in the middle of your group. Notably, Bethany's eyes blink before she re-reads the message, then re-reads it again.

“Ivan, can you see this?” you say loudly. After a moment, the ship speakers respond.

“Ah... yes. But I don't know what to make of it.”

“Harbinger? Wait, the girl?” Bethany speaks up. “Er... the one on our ship?”

“Yes,” you respond.

“Oh boy... I don't like the sound of this.”

“Neither do we, which is why we're leaving.”

“Maybe we should leave girl in facility?” Ivan says through the speakers. At this, Troy steps forward.

“No. Let's not abandon the girl to starve in an abandoned facility,” he says, sternly.

“Ah... was just suggestion, comrade,” Ivan responds.

“Okay,” you say, breaking through their conversation. “Show of hands, who wants to leave the girl behind? Ivan, just say it if you vote yes.”

The ship falls into silence, but none of your crew's hands raise. Ivan doesn't say anything. They might just be as crazy as you.

“Right. It's settled then. Ivan, take us to Freeport.” Everyone gives you a nod before turning to walk away into the ship proper. “Oh, and Troy, go put that weapon in the arsenal. Viktor, if you want, go ahead and examine it... we don't really know what to make of it.”

“I will, Gavin. I guess I can't stop you from calling me Beth?”

“No.”

Walking out of the room, you decide to make your way over to the lounge. Maybe the datachip can give you some more insight on the situation. Before getting to the lounge however, you stop in the mess hall to drop off the toaster.

The lounge is fairly spacey. A counter rests against the length of one of the walls while a corner couch adjacent to a loveseat surround a coffee table in the middle of the room.

Off to the side is a desk with a computer terminal on top. Sighing to yourself, you make your way over and boot it up, taking out the datachip from your pocket and putting it on the desk.

However, while you wait for the terminal to boot up, you hear a small ping from your smart-ring. Holding your wrist up, you read the small message:

Guy who doesn't love his mom, right here
>>
>>39997072
She'll just keep calling. We'll get one of those in a large space battle and suddenly, mom calls to talk about how you're a horrible son for never calling her and that she raised us better than this. Wondering if we're still peeing the bed... Actually, this could be funny.
>>
>>39997056
Hey, even badasses respect their mothers! usually. If they had a nice mom.
>>
>>39996934
“Yes. I'll message you once in awhile, mom.”

“Thank you, Gavin. That's all I ask for.”

“Ugh.”

“And try not to get yourself killed.”

“I won't,” you respond monotonously. Then a thought comes to mind. “Hey mom, I wanted to ask... what did uncle Josh do for a living?”

“Hmm... I don't really know. He usually never came to any get-togethers, but I know that when he did, he always had some really neat sciencey stuff to show.”

“No idea what companies he worked for?”

“As far as I'm concerned, he was somewhat associated with Beatrice Research and Development.”

“Interesting... I guess I'll have to look into it myself.”

“Hey, I'll look through anything on my end. If it interests you that much, I'll forward you what I find.”

“That... would be fantastic, actually. Thanks, mom.”

“No problem, honey. Just remember to message once in awhile, okay?”

“I will.”

“I love you.”

“Yeah, love you too.”

You hang up and browse through your ring a little bit, setting a different tone for the ping for when a message or call from her comes. Who knew that mom could be helpful for when you were being a star ship captain?

With the call ended, you look to your terminal screen to see it fully booted up. Your heart's still racing from the surprise call from your mom, but your focus turns to the datachip on the desk in front of you. Picking it up, you insert it into the card reader in the front of the computer.

After a moment of loading, you open up the files on the terminal, only to come across an encrypted filesystem.
>>
>>39997234

that's agood point
>>
>>39997234
“Figures,” you mutter to yourself. You try to access it, but the encryption doesn't let you through... except for a single folder containing a simple text document.

>Open it.
>Wait until you can find someone who can decrypt the filesystem.
>Go do something else on the ship.

(And with that, I have to go for now. I will be back in no more than three hours. Once again, really sorry for this. I'll keep you guys updated on my Twitter. Also, it looks like we might use multiple threads tonight.)

This sounds like something you need someone else to tackle. You studied encryption and filesystems back in university, but you didn't really get into the security side of things. Maybe when you get to Freeport, you can get a computer wiz to do his magic for you.

You safely eject the datachip from the computer and stand up. What now?

With the datachip safely in your pocket, you walk over to the ship arsenal to see if Troy or Viktor have come to any conclusions. Upon entering, you see the two of them huddled over a table with the gun on top of it.

“Any luck, boys?” you ask, announcing your presence as you walk up to them. Viktor turns to face you.

“It looks like it functions similarly to most other plasma weapons,” he explains, pointedly avoiding mentioning your encounter earlier. “I see a diode inside of its receiver, but I am not that much of a weaponsmith to really make much of it.”

“It seems like it can fit most ordinary rifle batteries,” Troy edges in. “It seems like this is some sort of prototype with the intention of mass production later on. The metal it's made from is actually the same alloy they use on Triglav ships. Light and tough as nails, very valuable. And judging from the barrel length, I suspect it could throw out quite a bit of plasma, though we aren't exactly sure how it handles the plasma.”

You blink, absorbing in the information. “And... is that a good thing or a bad thing?”

“No... it just means we do not know how it extracts and forms the ions. Or protons,” Viktor says. “It uses a mechanism unlike any I've seen before, both in small-arms weapons and ship weapons.”
>>
>>39999722
“What I want to know is if it won't blow up in our hands when we use it,” you say.

“Oh, trust me, it looks very well built,” Viktor answers.

“He's right. This looks like the most solid weapon ever built,” Troy agrees. You nod your head.

“Well, that's good, I guess. I suppose I look forward to its use, then. We're visiting a weapon shop, so maybe they have a person who could look into it.”

“Sounds good, but there will be a big Federation presence in Freeport, considering we're close by their sovereignty. Maybe we should just keep it in the ship while we go into the station; don't want them seeing us with their tech.” Troy suggests.

“That's a good idea, Troy. Let's keep it here, then. I'm gonna check on Bethany in the meanwhile.”

Both of them nod at you while you turn to your smart-ring, browsing through your contacts to find your ship doctor.

“Beth? Can you hear me?” you say, speaking into your smart-ring. After a moment of no response, her voice speaks.

“Hi, Gavin. What's up?”

“Anything to report?”

“Ah... actually, I just got some curious results on her blood samples. If you'd like to--” she cuts off, and you hear a breath escape her lips. “Oh, s-she's awake... Um, please come over? Hey, there... are you feeling--”

The line goes dark, presumably as Bethany talks to the girl. Troy and Viktor both stare at you with wide eyes, and you immediately bolt off towards the infirmary. You hear both of their footsteps trail behind you as you run.

After turning a corner, you almost bump into Ley'ra, but she moves out of the way just in time. Seeing the three of you running towards the infirmary, she follows.

Upon arriving at the infirmary, you see Bethany calmly speaking to the girl on the bed. She gives you a quick glance before turning back to her, but you see the blonde head of the girl turn towards you.

For the second time, her icey blue eyes meet yours, and they widen. She's still clad in her weird metallic getup, but she looks afraid.

You hold a hand up to signal that you don't mean any harm, but your vision is blocked by Bethany as she steps in front of you.
>>
>>40000046
“She won't speak to me, but she'll nod her head. Maybe you can get something out of her?” Bethany says, moving aside to let you through. Giving a slow nod, you walk into the room, coming to a stop in front of the bed.

“Um, hi,” you say. To your surprise, the girl opens her mouth to speak, but no sound comes out. She scrunches up her nose in effort as she tries to speak again, but only a whimper escapes. “Whoa, hey, don't strain yourself. I'm not here to hurt you. You can just nod or shake your head if you'd like.”

She lets out a small breath and nods, a sorrowful look on her face.

What do you ask her?
>”Do you remember anything from before you woke up?”
>”I need to know if you're... a threat to my crew. Should we be concerned?”

Shock recovery 101, ease her into the situation and focus on the now. Questions about the past can be saved for once she has calmed down (Unless we need her medical history, I suppose).
>>
>>40000073
“How are you feeling?” you ask as calmly as possible. You really do feel like you're walking on eggshells, here.

She closes her eyes at your words, and contently nods her head. Her breathing seems calm, so you interpret that as an “I'm okay.”

“Okay... good. My name is Gavin, and you are currently on my ship.”

The girl seems to think for a moment before nodding, seemingly accepting you. She has no reason to trust you, but you hope she isn't too out of her wits. You glance back to your crew, but they all just give you a curious stare from outside the infirmary. It's kind of cute how they're all peaking over each other's shoulders. You turn back to the girl.

“Are you comfortable? Do you need anything?”

She opens her mouth to speak again, but this time she looks determined to say something.

“C... co....”

“Hey, relax. You don't have to speak if you don't want to.”

“My... m-my name...”

“Can you write? It might be easier for you to communicate--”

“My name... is Comet.”

“Huh.” You look back to your crew again, and this time they look... like they always did. Their expressions are a little more knowing now, though. “Well, it's nice to meet you, Comet. Would you like to meet my crew?”

Her eyes seem to brighten up, and she nods her head.
>>
>>40000396
“Okay... uh, well, that woman you woke up to would be Bethany,” you say, pointing to her by the door. She gives a small wave. “She's the ship doctor and she'll be sure you're fine and dandy.”

Comet gives her a little nod.

“Behind her is Viktor... don't mind the mask, he's not really that scary.” Viktor nods. “Beside him--the guy with the metal arm--is Troy. He helped bring you to my ship.”

“Th-thank you, Troy,” Comet says with higher volume, her voice straining. Troy merely nods, but a peculiar look is plastered on his face. You can't quite make out what it means.

“And finally,” you say, pointing to Ley'ra, “the redhead trying to peak over Troy's shoulder is Ley'ra. She ensured we got to you safe and sound.”

Once again, Comet nods.

You turn back to your crew. “Alright, why don't you all introduce yourselves? Just... give her some space while you do.” You turn to Bethany. “Let's go outside and talk.”

She gives you a knowing stare and steps aside, letting you through the infirmary door. To your surprise, it's Viktor who steps into the infirmary first. Off to the side, you speak with Bethany.

“What were the results of the blood samples?” you ask. You see her hesitate before answering.

“Well... you're not gonna believe this, but her blood is relatively ordinary. Except for the fact that there's traces of mana in it.”

You furrow your eyebrows. “...Mana? But, how?”

“You're the one who found her in a research facility. You tell me.”

“Isn't that bad?”

“She should be dead with that much exposure to raw mana, but she's not. In fact, it looks like it flows through her blood like any cell.”

You stay silent for a moment, looking over to Viktor walking out from the infirmary. Ley'ra walks in next, and Viktor looks over to you two.

“She's a nice lady... but I'm going to go get her a glass of water. It looks like she needs it,” he says, walking off towards the mess hall while you exchange nods. You turn back to Bethany.

“So, what do you make of it?”

“I don't know,” she shrugs. “I studied standard biology. I told you what I know and what shouldn't happen, but it is. I suggest we bring her to some Federation officials, see what they can do for her.”

Ley'ra comes out of the room and walks over to the two of you, Troy entering the infirmary.

“She seems nice,” she says, simply.

“Ley'ra, we're going to keep her in the ship while we're at Freeport. I think either you or Viktor should look after her.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah, I don't think it's best we reveal her just yet. The Feds were experimenting on her.”

“Mm. But... maybe you should ask her, first?”

You share a glance with Bethany, and walk into the room. There, you see Troy giving her a comforting smile.

“...And I'm happy to have you on board. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask--hey Gavin,” he says, noticing your entrance. You look at Comet.

“Okay... Comet? I'm going to ask you something that might or might not be... offensive to you.” She gives you a knowing stare, but she seems to brace herself to your question. “You will be safe on my ship if you choose to remain here. But, we are arriving at Freeport station soon, close to Federation officials. Do you believe we should bring you to them?”

Comet lets out a sigh and closes her eyes. “The Federation... they... tried to help me,” she whispers, her voice high pitched and pristine.

You share a glance with Troy, but you turn back to her with a nod to encourage her to continue.

“They built me this suit to help with my... condition. But... they wouldn't stop. They... tried to push me, see what I was capable of.”

As she speaks, her voice seems to get more and more strained.

“Okay... it's okay, Comet. You can stay on the ship. You will be safe here.”

>Task Ley'ra with looking after her. You don't think she'll be very comfortable being around Feds anyways, being from the Syndicate.
>Get Viktor to look after her. He looks good at holding down the ship.

“Okay, Troy and Beth?” you say, getting both of their attention. “Why don't you both stay with her while we go into the station? I think you two can take care of her.”

“I can do that, Gavin,” Troy responds.

“Mhm,” Bethany agrees.

“It's settled then. Comet, these two will be here for you while we sort things out in the station--you're in good hands,” you say. From the bed, she gives you a happy nod and a smile.

You hear a knock on the infirmary entrance behind you and you see Viktor there with a glass of water in his hand. Giving him a smile, you step out of the infirmary. There, you see Ley'ra.

“Everything's settled. Are you gonna go into Freeport too?” you ask her.

“Mm... yeah, actually. I want to see what they have for sale,” she responds.

“But there's gonna be lots of Feds.”

“I'll be fine... it's not like they'll know where I'm from.”

“Huh, suit yourself.”

You think it's time you go check up on Ivan. Giving Ley'ra a nod, you turn and walk towards the front of the ship--you think your crew can handle Comet for now.

The low purr of the ship engines still reverberate through the ship, and it seems to calm you. You've only been with your crew for less than a day, but you feel like you've gone through so much already. Hell, you still don't know what to make of this Harbinger thing.

Maybe you should ask around Freeport what that means.

The small set of stairs to the cockpit appears in front of you, and you slowly walk up them. You feel weight to your steps, tiredness already overtaking you.

“We are approaching our final jump, comrade,” Ivan says as you enter the cockpit. Sure enough, you see the large jump gate in the distance as you take your seat next to him. This one seems to be built differently than the last one you saw, its outer ring bearing more of an oval shape than a circle. “I imagine our crew is safe and sound?”
>>
>>40001297
Because apparently those are the stories you tell to someone elses kids before you have your own?
>>
>>40001364
Maybe, do we have any siblings?
>>
>>40001342
“Of course, Ivan,” you say, letting out an exhale as you slump in your chair. “It's thanks to your smooth piloting. I'm glad I hired you.”

“Ah, as I said, it is nothing,” he chuckles, his hands still gripping the stick.

Your ship positions itself in the centre of the oval ring, and you immediately shut your eyes. Sure enough, a bright white light overtakes you, and when you open your eyes, you find yourself in a new system. However, a warm yellow light pelts your face from the right.

There, the bright yellow star of the Freeport system shines. From the distance, it looks like it's at least a few dozen astronomical units away from your current position. A powerful entity, but something you've come to take for granted on your home back in New Terra. Its brilliance washes over the two of you, and Ivan keeps the ship there for a few moments.

“Ah... I never get sick of this,” Ivan whispers to your right. You look over to him, and he returns a glance. “You see... this is why I pilot.”

You can't help but feel your own breath be taken away from the view. Ivan seems... content. It makes you a little self-conscious, but happy for him.

"I have lived in space for all my life, comrade. I see many beautiful pictures of life on ground. One day, I would like to see a star from there. A sunset. A good one."

“...We'll get you there, Ivan. Let's go to the station, now,” you say after giving him a moment to drink in the sight.

“Of course, Gavin.”

All crew's approval: +1

Thank you all for playing, today. I had a ton of fun. I'm sorry we didn't get to any real action today, but I promise (this time for real) that we'll get somewhere next time.

I'll start the next thread either Monday or tomorrow. I'll let you all know on twitter by mid day tomorrow.

Fly safe.

>"I have lived in space for all my life, comrade. I see many beautiful pictures of life on ground. One day, I would like to see a sunset. A good one."
Damn... That's what people say when they have 2 days until retirement. Please, don't die, you nice space slav.
>>
>>40001430
Peace, it was fun.
>>
>>40001430
Thanks, I had fun.
>>
>>40001430
Oh man, just when I caught up with the thread.
Still, really appreciate the session. I like what I'm seeing so far. See ya next time.

>I'm sorry we didn't get to any real action today
Pff, we're just gonna be doing some deliveries anyway. How hard could it be?
>>
>>40001451
Get him to that sunset. At least he'd die happy.

>>40001453
>>40001472
Thank you, I'm happy you all like it.

>>40001494
I've got some plans.
>>
>>40001521
in SDA we trust!

we gonna ever be able to acquire larger/other vessels, or is this more of a permanent thing? not complaining mind.
>>
>>40001494
>Pff, we're just gonna be doing some deliveries anyway. How hard could it be?

Aaaaaaaaand we're dead.
>>
>>40001521
Oh yeah, don't forget to archive.
>>
Character sheet updated with all the new approvals and new weapon for Troy.

Comet moved from temporary to full companion, until further notice.
>>
>>40001555
I'll give you guys a chance for that. New ships won't be cheap.

>>40001574
I will get that up in a second.

sweeeet. i like the close knit nature of a smaller ship/crew. but the thought of warping into a system with a battleship, knowing everyone else just shat there pants alittle, is kinda amussing. kek
>>
>>40001675
I was thinking maybe upgrade to destroyer, its only one size bigger without being HUEG
>>
>>40001704
makes sense, many people would consider a destroyer to practicaly be a heavy frigate anyways, major up gunned , up sized and up armored, while retaining almost all speed/manuverability would be a smart move.
>>
>>40001704
I would be alright with something the size of a light cruiser.
>>
I kinda wanna fill them hangars with a few ships myself.

This might be a good reference for ship sizes and rough capabilities, its meant more for a fleet game though not SDAs RPG ish style we have now

You'd want to write a small thread summary without spoilers for each archive entry in the description in the future. Like "Gavin and his crew escaped the abandoned space station with a mysterious girl aboard their ship" or something. That would make searching for a particular chapter easier.
>>
>>40001704
Evidently i said destroyer when i meant cruiser.
>>
>>40001920
Oh, I'll keep that in mind. Damn, I can't edit the current entry, can I?

I'll do that for next time.
>>
>>40001844
I want to try and make this quest so you don't have to refer to the CYOA to understand the story. I hope I'm going in the direction where not everyone who hasn't seen it would get lost. I mean, apart from the star map of course, which I've provided here.

Any thoughts or criticisms on how this is all going? Anything I could do to improve?
>>
>>40001430
Thanks for running SDA.
>>
>>40002033
Your doing pretty good,I have no suggestions for the moment. I was mostly just using the CYOA for aesthetics and technology references,
>>
Some neat statistics:

For thread 1, I wrote over 10k words of narrative.

For this thread, nearly 8k.

>>40002093
I'm happy to run this. I'm happier that people enjoy it, I honestly thought it would bomb. I'm surprised at the approval.

>>40002094
No issues, I just wanted to point that out. There's nothing wrong with referring to the CYOA.
>>
>>40002033
I haven't read anything from the CYOA that hasn't been shown in these two threads and I've had no problem whatsoever to follow what's going on.
>>
>>40002184
Thank you, that makes me glad that I'm on the right path, at least.

Trying hard to not cater to anyone in particular, aside from making this quest fun for everyone.
>>
>>40002033
Really good. Though I imagine that deciding between railroading and sandboxing will be quite a predicament, we're in space after all. I'd advise to keep the quest story-based, when all characters including our protagonist intend to continue along the lines you're developing for them and have a clear motivation. Otherwise there's always an incentive to say "fuck this contract, we're flying the fuck out of this system and missing all 10k words of your super-interesting story you wrote for us".

Also, there are always people who are unhappy about how the things are developing. Quote me on that, if you give people a chance to spare or kill an opponent there will be a shitstorm. When you've chosen a direction, even if it's an unpopular one, stick to it and do no retcons.

I don't try to prewrite things unless they're inevitable. For example, getting back to your ship was inevitable regardless if you had Comet, had any injuries, or anything from the facility. Anything else, I try to leave open.

I'm prepared to let you guys go anywhere you want on this map.
>>
>>40002258
>Quote me on that
And that sounds like valuable information. I'll definitely keep your advice to heart, I was afraid I was railroading too much or sandboxing too much at times.

I'm just getting a feel for it now, being a new QM and all. Shit's hard to balance, yo.
>>
>>40002314
>>40002133
Keep up the good work SDA!
>>
Star Dust CYOA update when?
Good quest.
>>
>>40002398
Hate to say that I'm putting it on hold, kind of. I do intend on finishing it sometime this summer, though. I'm slowly working on it.

The main CYOA is just a matter of translating the old CYOA to the new format, so it shouldn't be too hard for that.
>>
>>40002342
Just don't introduce too many plotlines at once- your players won't be able to focus on a thing. Like what happened to Soma.
>>
>>40002438
I think I know a way of controlling that. I hate to say that I'm gonna try to railroad a straight path for you guys to follow. Straying from that path isn't entirely out of the question, though.
